This place might not have been home, but it sure felt like it. The longer she stayed in Torensten, the more she was reminded of home. Trade was rampant and the streets were bustling with people. There was a town square, a castle and even a coliseum... She wondered if it would be strange of her to join a tournament, if there were any running at the moment. It would be a nice way to make some money in order to eat, but she did not know how kindly these people took to female Paladins.[break][break]
Gentle as she may look, she could definitely hold her own, though a previous encounter with a cactuar might not have said as much. As she meandered the street, her nose wrinkled as she remembered that encounter. Cactuars were sneaky little things. They seemed harmless but if rubbed the wrong way, they would freak out and spray their needles everywhere. Such is what happened to Selene. Though she had been cautious, it just was not in the cards to deal with the cactuar in a friendly manner. She still felt as if she was shaking needles from her hair.[break][break]
Most ignored Selene as she seemed lost in thought, but others found it a golden opportunity to try and catch her attention and trip her up. One of the pushy peddlers stepped right in her path. "Hey, lass!" he nearly spat in her face, "Buy some o' me han'made pouches! Y' won' regret it!" Just one look over to them and she wrinkled her nose, yet again. They looked crude, and misshapen, as if he had just made them all in a hurry... they did not seem worth her hard-earned coin. "Ah, no thank you..." she muttered quietly, as she tried to push past. But despite her answer of 'no', he would not let her pass. Selene's face grew red. She did not want to cause a scene, but this guy... he was just so annoying! Yet she was much too nice to tell him to 'screw off'...

It had taken Garnet a little bit of time to identify the strange sensation she felt as she wondered the streets. At first, she had thought it was just surprise at the return of her freedom. When she had travelled with Zidane, she had been able to (within reason, at least) go anywhere she wanted, speak to anybody, see anything, all without restrictions or guidelines. It was the first time she had ever been that free in her life, and until now, the only time. Suddenly being able to experience that freedom again; even if her duties as a queen were different from those as a princess, was, well, it was wonderful, but something felt strange about it.
She realised what it was afterwards. There was no tension at the back of her mind, no nagging concern that she might be recognised, no panic that if her disguise wasn't good enough, if she slipped up and used the wrong words, she would give herself away. Here, Garnet Til Alexandros was a nobody. There was no danger of being recognised. At best, they'd think maybe her tone was a bit, well, posh, but she was confident she could hide that. She had gotten pretty good at speaking like a regular citizen, after all, and sure, it'd take some time to get back into it, but she was confident! She'd been a pro at it before, hadn't she?
She was snapped from her thoughts when she saw a youngish woman, not much older than she was, having trouble with a shopkeeper who appeared to be harassing her. The girl was quiet and polite, and seemed to not know how to avert his attention. Garnet almost smiled at the familiarity. She had been the same, not so long ago. What was she saying? She'd probably be the same now. Garnet still didn't really know how to deal with high pressure market dealers. Anything like that Zidane would have dealt with back when they had journeyed together, and outside of that, Garnet hadn't ever really done her own shopping.
There wasn't much she could do though for the poor girl, was there? But then again, what was it Zidane always said?
You don't need a reason to help people.
She hesitated, and then, decision made, she turned towards the girl. "There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!" she said, with her best attempt at an urgent, dramatic voice. "I'm terribly sorry sir, but I need my sister to follow me at once! It's most urgent!" she insisted, taking the girl by the arm and leading her away from the annoying merchant, as if there was no way 'no' could be an answer, as if some great family crisis was in process.
Once they were clear, she stopped, turning back to the girl. "My apologies, I thought you looked like you could use an excuse to leave," she explained with a smile. She was feeling quite pleased with herself. That little deception would have made Zidane proud. "I... can have difficulties handling people like that myself, so I know how awkward it can be," she explained delicately. "My name's Dagger, by the way," she said in what she felt was a perfectly on-point informal introduction. She was actually feeling proud of herself. She felt like she had fallen right back into this 'pretend to be a commoner' thing!
Before she could protest or even process what was happening, Selene felt herself being dragged away from the vendor. A very confused and concerned look crossed her face, yet it didn't take her long to realize that this was actually for her benefit. A look of understanding was shot toward the girl leading her away, yet her expression didn't change so she could still look convincing of someone in an urgent situation.
Once in the clear, Selene heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Dagger. I'm Selene," she smiled to the girl, though wondering just what kind of name that was... But ah, it didn't matter much. She had probably heard worse, somewhere. Selene chuckled and shook her head. "He just didn't know how to take no for an answer."
With a tilt of her head, she asked the girl, "Say... Are you from around here?"

"It's nice to meet you, Selene," Garnet replied with a smile, keeping herself informal, despite the temptation to bow. She was pleased that she had managed to help the girl out of the situation; she felt like it made up a little for how utterly helpless she had been when she first started her journey with Zidane and the others. "I am happy to help," she said with real enthusiasm, and she was. It truly felt good.
She paused, a little surprised, when Selene asked if she was from around there. Had Selene seen through her disguise so fast? Surely not... Was Selene from Gaia too? Did she know who Garnet really was? "Um, no, no I'm not," she said nervously, fiddling with the pendant around her neck for a moment before forcing herself to let it go, and look directly at Selene. "I'm from... a place called Alexandria. It's... quite far away, I'm afraid," she admitted with a slight sigh. "Uh, where are you from?" she tried to make the question sound casual, but she didn't really know what else to say. At least that way she would have some answers.
"Were you in the marketplace shopping? It's quite fun, isn't it?" she asked with a smile. She still wasn't really used to doing all of her own shopping herself, but she had to ask. Maybe having a companion more experienced in doing her own shopping would be good for Garnet and help...
Selene thanked the stars that Dagger was a kind soul, at least so far. Dagger seemed genuinely nice, and it put Selene at ease. Though her soft smile soon curled into a slight frown. She was hoping she would finally meet someone that had a bit more answers about... Well, everything. But as far as she knew, Alexandria was not on the map. Was this girl from... Somewhere else too?
"I see..." Selene sighed softly. "I'm from a land called Eorzea. Though relative to here, I am not sure where it is..." Or even if it was. She wasn't sure if her world had been rebuilt after the flames...
Her mood seemed to pick up, at least a little, as Dagger asked about shopping. Selene had to let out a soft chuckle. She took great comfort in comparing her to Eos, whom she proved to be more and more alike as she spoke. Growing up, Selene was very much a tomboy type and preferred to play the role of the Knight while Eos loved to be the Princess. Selene always found it such a chore to do girly things, like shop and dress up. Yet with only her memories to hold onto, Selene would try to emulate her sister as best she could. It helped her grief, at least a bit. "I was shopping, yes," she smiled, "Though I'm not quite sure what for. My coin hasn't been going as far as I'd like, so I have only really looked for the food vendors... But a little bit of window shopping could be fun."

It was funny how much Selene reminded Garnet of, well, herself. Maybe not herself these days, maybe not Dagger, but she certainly reminded Garnet of the Princess Garnet who had once run away from Alexandria, had no idea how to speak to the people of Dali, and had thought Oglops were kind of cute. Well, actually, she still did and she didn't really see what all the fuss was about, but maybe the fact her Uncle Cid had been one for a significant amount of time influenced her there. Either way, the point was, she felt she understood Selene, who seemed gentle, confused, and alone.
She understood the girl's confusion about where they were. Garnet had the same confusion herself, but had perhaps adapted a little better, given she had experience travelling between worlds. At least, she liked to think she had. She had felt just as much, if not more, a fish out of water than Selene when she arrived, but she liked to think she had some experience travelling as well. She was an adventurer as well now, wasn't she? "It sounds as if you arrived here as I did. As many others I have spoken to did. I... do not think this is the same world as the one from which you hailed..." she tried to explain gently. "I have... travelled between worlds before. I know that it is possible. I don't know what brought us here, but I'm sure that whatever it was, it can be reversed. Last time, my friends and I found a way back to our world. I'm sure that we can this time too," she said, hoping it was reassuring. Hoping that her words were true. Too many people here seemed to believe that they were stranded there forever, but Garnet had seen travel between worlds. She knew it was possible...
The girl seemed happy to shop, although she worried about gil. Truthfully, Garnet was having to count her coin too. She wasn't particularly short, her royal jewellery had fetched a fine price, but it still felt odd to have to worry about and count money when she'd never been exceptionally concerned before. She was, however, momentarily confused by the phrase.
(...Window shopping?)
Luckily, Garnet was fairly adapt these days at at least spotting when a phrase was slang, and not to be taken literally, even if she didn't quite understand it. At least, she hoped it wasn't literal. She didn't particularly want to shop for windows. It sounded quite dull and she wasn't sure what made one window different from any other. Surely the glass was the same in all of them...
"I'm still attempting to buy equipment," Garnet admitted. "I... did not exactly arrive here in practical garb," she smiled sheepishly, thinking just what Selene might have thought if she had seen her arrive her gigantic frock. Still, Garnet didn't really think of buying additional clothes. Strangely enough, given that she had been a literal princess, she didn't find clothes shopping particularly thrilling. She supposed she had always owned enough clothes to dress an army of royalty, and never really had to think about going out to purchase more, and once she was travelling, her only concern had been keeping her outfit clean, not what she chose to wear...
