Cobbles. Garnet had travelled the world, and she still didn't understand who thought cobbles were a good idea. She still remembered the first time she had encountered them in Treno. She was still sure that pickpocket wouldn't have escaped with her gil if the terrain had been more friendly! It wasn't that she was incapable of walking in them, even in her modestly heeled boots, after all, one of her very first adventures had taken her to a cavern made out of ice, and after you had traversed one of those in gripless ankle boots, cobbles didn't pose much of a threat, but what baffled her was the apparent choice behind their design. Particularly in Treno, so famed for its architecture. She would never admit it, but Treno had been something of a letdown after she had so eagerly wanted to visit. Oh, the architecture was fine, although it paled in comparison to Alexandria Castle, but the city had been so dark and so cruel she hadn't much enjoyed her time there.
Fortunately, thus far, Torensten had been something of an improvement. At least she hadn't been pick pocketed yet nor had she had to avoid any alleyways because of worrying looking drunk people. That said, the city seemed much bigger than Treno, and she was only just beginning to explore it. Take for example the rather heavily armed looking crowd who were gathered around some kind of noticeboard. She paused for a moment, almost turning to Zidane to ask him what they were doing before realising they weren't there. Honestly, when they had travelled together, Garnet had mostly tried to work things out for herself; if she asked every time she hadn't understood or recognised something she would have never stopped asking questions, and likely annoyed her companions away, but she had grown so comfortable with Zidane she was happy to ask him when she was confused about something.
Only he wasn't there. She was all alone.
She moved towards the crowd, horribly out of place among the huge, heavily armed figures. She wanted to know what they were doing, and hoped she could figure it out by context. They reminded her of Amarant, strangely enough. They were all big, well muscled, one even had the same blue skin and red hair, the same pointy goatee and dark, hidden eyes-
....in fact, he looked exactly like Amarant Coral. Because he was. Garnet's eyes lit up and her heart skipped a beat. Amarant! If Amarant was here, then the others might be too! Steiner! Eiko! Quina! Zidane! She hurried over, full of excitement.
"Amarant! Amarant!" she was practically bursting with excitement. "It's me! It's... Dagger!" Yes, she still used the false name, despite the lack of a need. Somehow, it felt more right being there, it felt more safe. Plus, well, Zidane always called her it, and in some ways, she thought she was more Dagger than Garnet now. At least, when she was on an adventure. "I cannot believe you are here! Are you alone? I-is Zidane with you?" she asked, hesitating only for a moment before asking that vital question.

It had taken Garnet a little bit of time to identify the strange sensation she felt as she wondered the streets. At first, she had thought it was just surprise at the return of her freedom. When she had travelled with Zidane, she had been able to (within reason, at least) go anywhere she wanted, speak to anybody, see anything, all without restrictions or guidelines. It was the first time she had ever been that free in her life, and until now, the only time. Suddenly being able to experience that freedom again; even if her duties as a queen were different from those as a princess, was, well, it was wonderful, but something felt strange about it.
She realised what it was afterwards. There was no tension at the back of her mind, no nagging concern that she might be recognised, no panic that if her disguise wasn't good enough, if she slipped up and used the wrong words, she would give herself away. Here, Garnet Til Alexandros was a nobody. There was no danger of being recognised. At best, they'd think maybe her tone was a bit, well, posh, but she was confident she could hide that. She had gotten pretty good at speaking like a regular citizen, after all, and sure, it'd take some time to get back into it, but she was confident! She'd been a pro at it before, hadn't she?
She was snapped from her thoughts when she saw a youngish woman, not much older than she was, having trouble with a shopkeeper who appeared to be harassing her. The girl was quiet and polite, and seemed to not know how to avert his attention. Garnet almost smiled at the familiarity. She had been the same, not so long ago. What was she saying? She'd probably be the same now. Garnet still didn't really know how to deal with high pressure market dealers. Anything like that Zidane would have dealt with back when they had journeyed together, and outside of that, Garnet hadn't ever really done her own shopping.
There wasn't much she could do though for the poor girl, was there? But then again, what was it Zidane always said?
You don't need a reason to help people.
She hesitated, and then, decision made, she turned towards the girl. "There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!" she said, with her best attempt at an urgent, dramatic voice. "I'm terribly sorry sir, but I need my sister to follow me at once! It's most urgent!" she insisted, taking the girl by the arm and leading her away from the annoying merchant, as if there was no way 'no' could be an answer, as if some great family crisis was in process.
Once they were clear, she stopped, turning back to the girl. "My apologies, I thought you looked like you could use an excuse to leave," she explained with a smile. She was feeling quite pleased with herself. That little deception would have made Zidane proud. "I... can have difficulties handling people like that myself, so I know how awkward it can be," she explained delicately. "My name's Dagger, by the way," she said in what she felt was a perfectly on-point informal introduction. She was actually feeling proud of herself. She felt like she had fallen right back into this 'pretend to be a commoner' thing!

Garnet was enraptured. Anybody who knew the young Queen knew that she had a great love of theatre, but the truth was that while, yes, Garnet loved plays, she was also something of a bookworm when it came to them. She had ready every popular play on Gaia, and even if a play was new, she would usually be able to read it before watching it. She liked to study it, get to know the words, read the past performances, learn about the playwrights, read critical analysis and reviews. It had been long, so long, since she had sat and watched a play with no idea as to how it would end, or where the story would go. She had forgotten the thrill of the unknown, the mystery, and she was along for every second of the ride. Of course, part of it was watching street theatre in a crowd was very different from watching it from a distance in your private box. Garnet had, even despite her experiences in the world, previously been an advocate for being seated quietly at the theatre. It allowed you to appreciate the craftsmanship of the stage, the work of the costume designers, and experience the show exactly as the director intended. But being lost in a crowd of emotional audience members, it was like every feeling was magnified around you. It was a thrilling experience, even if it was also a little alarming to the young queen...
When the identity of the Black Knight was revealed, she gasped. When she defeated General Haido, she cheered. And when she delivered her heartfelt speech about the death of her family, she wept. Garnet was there for every emotion felt, and after the play finished, she almost considered being lost in this new realm was worth it for such an experience.
Almost.
She wished she could have shared it with Zidane. She was sure he'd have criticised the fight choreography. She had heard that he and Blank had put on quite the show, all that time ago in Alexandria, but the truth had been she hadn't been watching back then. She had other things on her mind. Of course, she'd seen Zidane's performance on her 17th Birthday, but... well, she wasn't likely to forget that any time soon, was she?
Either way, she was thrilled, and this was usually when she'd ask Steiner or Beatrix to arrange a meeting so that she could congratulate the principle players. Of course, neither were here, and even if they were, 'Dagger' did not have the authority to arrange such a meeting. Fortunately, however, the players seemed to stick around. Some even approached them. Garnet watched, hesitating for a moment, but then realising that if others were doing it, she could too. She almost smiled to herself. For a moment, she felt like that naive little princess, freshly escaped from the castle, walking around Dali, trying to listen to conversations and see how the common people acted. She thought she had come so far from those days, but maybe, deep inside, she was still the same lost little girl. Again, she wished Zidane was there, but no, she was alone.
But that didn't mean she couldn't do this...
She approached the woman in the blonde wig, who had played Lady Tousson. Up close, you could see it was a wig of course, but during the magic of the play, it had been impossible to tell.
"Gree-" she began, before pausing. No, she wasn't a queen here. She was Dagger again. "I, uh, I mean, hello," she smiled. "I... just wanted to say... that performance was magnificent! I had never seen this work before, and thoroughly enjoyed it! I must read the text!" she declared, smiling brightly. "You made a wonderful Lady Tousson. It's a superb role, you must have had so much fun!" In truth, maybe Garnet was a little jealous. Not of the player, who had done such a good job, but of the fictional Lady Tousson herself. Because in the real world, when the noblewoman went on the run and needed to defy a villain, she didn't return a heroic swordswoman. And her losses became oh, so much worse, as the year went on. Garnet had never found the strength to wield a sword or fight physically. But she had found a different kind of strength; a strength in her friends, and she had supported them to the end. Garnet wondered if anybody would ever write a story like that... "I-I mean, I have some questions, about the plot, and I'd love to speak with you about the show!" She paused, realising she hadn't introduced herself. "My name... I mean, I'm Dagger," she introduced. And then, with her best attempt at a smile, she said a word that still seemed alien in her mouth. But Vivi would have said it. Zidane would say it. Eiko would say it. That word was, simply, "Hiya!"

Garnet hated to say it, but there was a slight sense of joy as she wandered the streets of the town that seemed to be called Torensten. Her situation was dire, she knew that, her gown tattered and hanging around her, the stares of many following this apparent Queen in ruins as she walked the city paths, but at the same time... she had forgotten the thrill of seeing somewhere new. When she had travelled with Zidane and the others, every day had been a new experience, and while sometimes it had been scary, sometimes it had been sad, sometimes it had been intense and full of danger, for somebody who had only ever read about the outside world in books, it was also thrilling. Garnet never tired of seeing new cities and new places, having her eyes opened to new worlds, and the last few months, as Queen of Alexandria, had been heavy with responsibility, business, and she had missed this. The excitement of the new...
Of course, she knew she shouldn't be happy about it. She was alone, she was probably in more danger than she had ever been, without anybody to assist her, and she had no idea what was happening. Worse yet, she had once again failed her kingdom, leaving it behind. The joy of adventure and finding a new place should pale in significance compared to her responsibilities; she was a queen. She had a duty to her people.
But there was nothing she could do about now, and she couldn't entirely pretend there wasn't excitement at the thought of another adventure. If only Zidane was by her side... Steiner, Vivi, Quina, Eiko... All of them. She missed them so badly. Especially poor Vivi. It hadn't been fair...
Still, Garnet knew more than most about dealing with stress and worry. She had suffered a pretty bad mental break after the destruction of Alexandria. She had to learn to find her confidence and fight through it, and one of those things was to focus not on what you couldn't change, but what you could. She had to focus on the immediate path ahead of her. Her first goal was to secure funding. She was unarmed, she was in her Alexandrian gown, or what remained of it after the misadventures in the swamp, and neither of those things were good. She wasn't much good in combat with a staff, even after all those adventures, but it was better than nothing, and she needed clothing that would draw less of an eye. Fortunately, she had still been wearing her tiara when she had been teleported to this strange realm, and that alone was worth more than enough gil once sold. Garnet was, perhaps, not quite as confident undercover as 'Dagger' when wearing the ridiculously large gown, but she had seen Zidane barter and trade goods enough times that she knew how to get a reasonable deal, and she had more than enough gil after selling her jewellery (bar the pendant, of course) to ensure she could purchase a new outfit.
She had located a rather high end clothes shop that sold clothing not entirely dissimilar to her preferred travelling outfit, and the seller there had even been kind enough to allow her to use their facilities to wash and change, after seeing the state she was in. Garnet got the impression she wasn't the first lost traveller who had arrived there, albeit none quite in her style attire, which raised some interesting questions. Namely, what had happened and if others were there as she was.
Zidane?
She dared not to hope. Having changed into a familiar, similar orange jumpsuit and blouse, allowing the merchant to keep the remains of her gown in exchange for her help, she felt more confident. The gown was in bad shape, but could probably be saved, and was likely worth more than most of the contents of the shop, so it would doubtlessly help to repay the merchant. The merchant had also been kind enough to lend Garnet some make-up, although she decided purchasing cosmetics would be her next stop. She didn't consider herself vain, but, well, she was royalty, and she liked to look nice. Especially if Zidane did show up. They had only just been reunited. She didn't want him to see her looking scruffy. Sure, he'd seen her in a bad way before, but, well, she still didn't like it...
After asking for directions, she found herself heading deeper into the fashion district of the town, looking at the shops. Shopping like this was turning out to be quite fun! She had never done it before, as a princess and queen, all of her impressive fashions were usually provided, and she had a vast wardrobe to choose from, she didn't buy it herself, and when adventuring, they had been shopping for necessities, not for themselves. This was, in contrast, quite exciting.
Still, she didn't want to spend too long. She'd buy some essentials, and then she'd look for a weapon. She didn't like being entirely unarmed, and she was sure there would be a staff somewhere nearby to purchase...

Garnet had, in her opinion, shown that she was a capable adventurer. A year ago, she may have been a naive and coddled princess who knew very little about life outside the walls of a castle, but since then, she'd travelled the world. She had stayed in inns all over and slept in tents, battled monsters and seen the sort of things most people never experienced. And she had known love and heartbreak and love again. She was not a naive little girl anymore, who didn't know how to speak to commoners, didn't know the names of basic weapons, and had never even seen a common oglop. She had experienced it all, she had camped under the stars and slept in rickety inns, she had travelled to far off lands, battled snow and desert and even ended up on a far off world. She was, by most people's standards, a seasoned adventurer.
So why did she feel like such a useless, lost little girl all over again?
Well, she imagined it had to do with the nature of her most recent abduction. Garnet was a Queen now, and used to threats to her security. She had been kidnapped in the past, of course, as a princess, sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not, but never had something like this happened. One moment, she had been the happiest she could remember. Zidane was alive, and he was back. She was holding him in her arms as he recounted where he had been for the last year (or so it felt), and she wanted to thump him on the back of the head as well as hug him and never let go of him for the way he had returned to her. Really, he had put on that whole act with the play... It was....
Who was Garnet kidding? It was incredibly sweet. She had never felt emotions that strong, that kind of joy mingled with sadness, desperation, disbelief... When she threw herself into his arms she thought her life could end right at that moment and she would never experience an emotional high any higher. But that thought hadn't meant to be a challenge to the gods. It hadn't been a request to teleport her away to a whole other world. But here she was.
She did, at least, feel experienced enough that where ever she had ended up was nowhere she recognised on Gaia. The ground was swampy, which was immediately inconvenient. She still remembered her first time stepping into Qu Marsh, the modest heels on her travelling boots sinking and nearly being sucked clean off her feet. She wasn't wearing modest travelling boots now. She was still in her gown, and beneath the huge dress were beautiful, artistically decorated, white stiletto heels. They gave her height, and a dainty presence befitting a young Queen. What they did not give her was practical footwear for the swamp in which she had landed.
She didn't recognise the swamp. Of course, it would be naive to claim she had seen every part of Gaia, but she had visited pretty much every major area, and those she hadn't she had seen from the Hilda Garde III or the Invincible. She knew the map of Gaia as well as any explorer, but this particular area didn't fit any description she could imagine.
She stopped, and let out a huff. She could barely walk, both her heels were stuck fast in the swampy mud, and she had to stop to wriggle herself free. Once she had done so, she only managed a few steps before her long gown snagged on something and she was caught again. She struggled to free herself from that, but her heels became stuck once more. She wrestled them free, but then her dress was caught again...
This went on for some time, and she stopped, a little short of breath. She looked back. She had made it perhaps five meters. Her attire was just completely inappropriate for the location she had landed in. She could barely make it a few feet in her dress, and every step presented challenges. Even back when she had been a naive little princess running away from home, she had at least chosen some appropriate travelling clothes. Yes, okay, in retrospect perhaps a bright orange jumpsuit wasn't the smartest outfit if you were trying to lay low and not be noticed, but she hadn't really known any better, and after that, well, it meant a lot to her that outfit. It was still one of her favourites. She experienced a lot of tragedy wearing it, but also good times. Good memories and good friends.
Also, it didn't get caught on every little darned twig.
She yanked her dress free yet again, and tried to gather up the rather mighty train and carry it in her hands, but there was too much of it, it was much too big, and the hoopskirts she wore underneath made it no less practical to carry than to wear. She tried not to think of poor Beatrix and how much effort she'd put into making sure Garnet looked presentable, now that the bottom of the dress was brown with filth. She waved a hand at annoying midges that swarmed her. They always seemed to swarm her when they had travelled, even back on Gaia. Zidane had speculated it was her perfume attracting them. She should have probably stopped wearing it, but truth be told, she kind of liked that Zidane had noticed. It made her smile.
It made her smile considerably less now, but not as little as the howling roar from behind her. She turned, swivelling on her feet, which was a mistake, because it drove both heels deep into the mud. Tree branches snapped and bushes shook. Something was coming. She tried to run; she was in no condition to fight, she had no staff, no support, she was a white mage, a powerful one yes, but she supported others in combat, not fought herself. She had the odd spell that might help, but not much to defend against anything that big, not without calling forth an Eidolon, and she didn't want to have to do that unless absolutely necessary. But her efforts to run were in vain, her stubborn heels refused to budge. Turning had made them sink deep, and she was stuck in the mud. She tried furiously to free herself, but she didn't have time, and the beast was nearly upon her.
Zidane, where are you?
No. She couldn't rely on him. Friendship was a powerful thing, a great thing, but right now, she was alone. She closed her eyes and her hands began to glow. She might be mostly defenceless, but she wasn't entirely helpless, even if in a ridiculous dress and unarmed. She would go down fighting.

Garnet Til Alexandros XVII
"We faced many hardships, too... but... I think I finally know what's important."
I. BASICS
FULL NAME:: Garnet Til Alexandros XVII NICKNAMES:: Dagger, Sarah GENDER:: Female AGE:: 18 ORIENTATION:: heterosexual
GAME OF ORIGIN:: Final Fantasy IX ALIGNMENT:: Harmonious EQUIPMENT:: Staff, Royal Pendant, White Magic, Summon: Ramuh
HEIGHT:: 5"4 HAIR/EYES/SKIN:: Long, dark brunette hair, brown eyes, fair skin DISTINGUISHING MARKS:: Known for her beauty
II. PERSONA
On the outside, Garnet is polite, soft spoken, and naive. She has a gentle spirit, is always kind and sweet, and has been raised exactly as royalty should be, until the year past she had very little experience outside her castle walls or understanding of how the world works. She is dainty and thoughtful, well educated and can seem fragile. In many ways, she fits the stereotype of exactly what one might expect from a White Mage Princess-turned-Queen.
However, beneath the surface, Garnet has a surprising amount of strength and courage. Her polite, gentle and somewhat shy personae may fool you, but she is courageous and possesses her own kind of bravery. When something needs doing, she will see it done, no matter the cost. She never backs down from a challenge, and shows a surprising lack of fear in new scenarios. She will push through her pain, doubts and concerns to do what is necessary to help people, no matter the personal cost, and never gives in.
What she lacks for in experience and physical ability she makes up for in determination. Garnet often harbours private fears and doubts, concerns over her own youth, her lack of ability, her feelings of being useless or helpless, and concern that she doesn't know the right path, but in truth, she always will try to do the right thing, and will never let her doubts stand in her way. As Queen, sometimes these feelings are worse, she is aware she is incredibly young, and has no parents to guide her, but her friends' confidence in her helps her find her belief in herself. No matter how bad things get, or how difficult things get for her, Garnet will soldier on to do the right thing. Raised a princess, initially with a with limited knowledge of white magic and no true physical skills, she fought to save the world alongside warriors and knights, because it needed to be done. Throughout the journey, her skills increased, as did her confidence and her experience of the outside world, but she can still be a little naive, and her upper class roots usually clearly are on show.
She is a theatre lover, in particular of drama and romance, and loves to study literature. Despite her upbringing and formality, she has a developed sense of humour, sometimes enjoying to make fun of herself, and sometimes enjoying to tease others, particularly Steiner, her armoured guard, and Zidane, her lover.
III. BACKGROUND
Queen of Alexandria, Garnet rarely fights or sees battle these days, but journeyed alongside Zidane and his party to save the world from her mother, Terra, and Kuja's evil schemes. During that time, she fought as a White Mage, before discovering her heritage as a summoner, and also calling forth powerful eidolons to assist her. In combat, Garnet fights with a staff or racket, but is not exceptionally effective with either. Her royal upbringing means she has little in the way of muscle power, and therefore she does not hit hard and is not capable of physically harming many foes.
However, she is exceptionally talented with white magic, after a year of adventuring, and is now extremely capable of summoning a range of magical powers. These are almost entirely defensive in nature, designed to keep her and her companions safe, but she does have the odd offensive spell, usually designed to inconvenience an enemy.
Born a summoner, she is capable of calling forth powerful Eidolons to aide her in battle, although the only one that she still carries with her at the moment is Ramuh, who has offered her counsel in the past and can help her be more sure of herself. He is also capable of delivering powerful lightning attacks.
IV. HISTORY
Born on the Northern Continent of Gaia, in a tiny summoner village known as Madain Sari, under the name of Sarah, the woman who would become known as Garnet was originally raised as a summoner. Like all summoners, she had a horn. She would often pray at the Eidolon Wall, and learned the lullaby of the summoners, Melody of Life. However, at the age of six, Madain Sari was attacked by the Invincible, a battleship from the world of Terra, and Sarah and her mother fled in a small ship.
Her mother perished, but Sarah survived, reaching the shores of Alexandria. To the shock of the King and Queen of Alexandria, she was the spitting image of the young Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, who had recently passed away after ill health. Deciding to raise the child as their own, and to pretend she was the real Princess Garnet, the Royal Family ordered her horn removed. The trauma of the loss of her village, her mother, and her horn caused the girl now named Garnet to repress all of her memories, leaving her perfect to be moulded into the role of the princess.
Tutored by Doctor Tot, the young Garnet became a fan of literature, in particular the plays of Lord Avon, and I Want to be Your Canary. which she loved to see performed on her birthday. A naive little girl, Doctor Tot helped educate the princess in many manners (for example, once Garnet believed that the world was shaped as the castle, and didn't understand why he globe was round). She grew into a well educated young girl, who had something of an affinity for White Magic. She was also aware of Eidolons inside of her, but her fear of their power and what they meant prevented her from ever calling them.
At the age of ten, the King, the man she knew as her father, passed away, and Garnet was stricken with grief. During that period, she met Regent Cid Fabool IX, who became like an uncle to her during that difficult time.
During her fifteenth year, Garnet began to grow concerned about the behaviour of her mother, Queen Brahne. She was no longer the compassionate, kind woman Garnet had known from her childhood, and seemed to be growing colder, more abusive, and greedier. She was increasingly influenced by Zorn and Thorn, two court jesters, and a mysterious silver haired man Garnet only rarely glimpsed. She grew so concerned that she longed to question her Uncle Cid, but knew she could not get to Lindblum, his nation, without her mother preventing her. In secret, she began practicing, preparing herself to escape the castle...
On her sixteenth birthday, at a performance of I Want to be Your Canary, Garnet sought to escape the castle with the theatre troupe. By coincidence., the theatre troupe was actually a gang of thieves sent to kidnap her by Cid himself, and Garnet found herself caught up in a kidnapping that she herself wanted. Fleeing Alexandria in their Theatre Ship, the airship was shot down by Queen Brahne, crashing into the forests below... There, Garnet's true adventure began. Pursued by her mother's forces, assisted by the thief Zidane and the Black Mage Vivi, and even her own armoured bodyguard Steiner, after a fashion, Garnet travelled first to Lindblum, and then beyond (where she travelled under the alias 'Dagger'). Her journey took her far and wide, and saw her have to confront the evils of her own kingdom, Alexandria, and the actions of her mother, who had developed an army of magical soldiers to wage war for her. Eventually, Garnet was captured by her mother, who extracted her eidolons from her, nearly killing Garnet in the process. Realising how corrupted her mother had become, Garnet sought to find a way to stop her, but in the process saw her own eidolons ravage entire cities. Devastated and broken by what she had experienced, Garnet made it her personal goal to stop her mother and prevent her from using her power to harm anybody else living. Believing that her mother's adviser, Kuja, was behind it all, she sought to find him and stop him.
In doing so, however, Kuja revealed his true colours, using his impressive, some would say alien, technology to take control of Garnet's summon Bahamut, and turning it upon her mother's forces. Her mother was killed in the confrontation, and Garnet had to face becoming Queen. Devastated by her mother's loss, despite her evil, Garnet sought to find a new start, and be the best Queen she could be, but before her coronation, Kuja attacked Alexandria with Bahamut. In the resulting battle, Garnet worked with fellow summoner Eiko to summon Alexander, the mighty defender of Alexandria, but Alexander was destroyed by the same alien technology, and the city of Alexandria devestated.
Seeing her kingdom reduced to ruin, her mother dead, her summons on the rampage, all of it became so much for Garnet she suffered a mental break, losing her ability to speak, and her concentration becoming so hampered she could barely fight. Regardless, she insisted on still travelling with the party, still fighting to stop Kuja. She wouldn't allow herself to be a damsel or to be left behind. She knew she had to fight, just as the others did, and she carried on, trying to find a way to stop Kuja.
Eventually, realising their quest to stop Kuja would take them to an entirely alien world, Garnet cut off her long hair, and found her voice again, resolving to be her own person once more, and to fight for her kingdom and people. She renewed her conviction, and fought alongside the party, as they travelled to Terra and beyond, until their confrontation took them to the very centre of life itself, where they battled Kuja, now in his Trance form, and the God of Death Necron itself, to save the world.
Although their battle was successful, the cost was extreme. Zidane, whom Garnet had fallen in love with over the course of her journey, was lost. He went missing, trying to save his 'brother' Kuja, despite his evil acts, and was not seen again for almost an entire year. During that time, Garnet accepted her duty as Queen and tried to do what was best for the rebuilding of Alexandria, but remained heavy hearted, sad and depressed, at the loss of her love. But then, on her eighteenth birthday... Zidane returned, making a surprise appearance during the annual performance of her favourite play. She raced to meet him, embracing him, and the pair were reunited at last. She even lost her pendant, although managed to reclaim it shortly afterwards.
And then, everything changed. From the happiest moment of Garnet's life, suddenly she found herself teleported away, and on an entirely new world, ready for an entirely new adventure to start...

It reminded her a little of her first attempts at white magic, when she had just been a child, and she'd messed up the cure spell, just to watch its light fizzle out. The castle was currently asleep. Oh, she knew that was technically grammatically incorrect, she could already imagine Doctor Tot admonishing her for the mistake, but it was the only way to think of it. It was like the entire castle was simply sleeping. No clanking of Steiner's armoured guards, no swish of the servants as they silently moved, no graceful clicking of Beatrix's boots, and no prattling from Zorn and Thorn or yelling from her mother. The castle was entirely silent.
Which was just how she wanted it, of course. When the idea had first entered her head, it had seemed drastic. To flee the castle without mother's approval, without the escort or assistance of the guards, to get to Lindblum and her Uncle Cid, but now, well, it was fast becoming reality. The first stages of her plan had been put in motion. For the annual birthday production of I Want To Be Your Canary, Garnet had requested a theatre troupe from Lindblum, one she said she had heard great things about. In truth, she just wanted a troupe that were guaranteed to return there. Now, it was just a case of sneaking out during the performance and boarding the theatre ship. After that, it should be an easy trip back to Lindblum.
There was just one problem, of course. Garnet was a princess. She had never tried to do anything like this before. She liked to think she was compassionate and kind, but she was self aware enough to know that she had been raised in perfect luxury, and wasn't physically conditioned for an escape plan. Which is why she had to sneak out early in the morning and practice.
She was stood on the western stairwell of the castle, a tower guarded, even in the dead of night, but fortunately one of Steiner's Knights of Pluto had been on the job, and asleep. She was wearing her 'travelling clothes', her orange jumpsuit and bell blouse. Travelling clothes for Garnet were a bit of a joke; she could count the number of times she'd been outside of the castle on one hand, but she'd requested some based on the fact she was turning sixteen soon, and would be expected to 'travel more' to attend formal events on behalf of Alexandria. She doubted her mother believed her for a moment, and of course she was quick to point out for such engagements Garnet would be in a gown and royal tiara, but regardless, accommodated her request, meaning that at least she had the proper attire for her escape attempt.
She looked at the steps before her, which seemed to stretch into infinity. Back when she had started this practice, she hadn't been able to ascend the tower at all without stopping for a rest; which seemed to be expected of a princess. Now, however...
She took a deep breath, and ascended the staircase, taking them two at a time. She was breathing harder as she ran, large pendant slapping against her stomach, but she ascended quickly, even if her arms flailed at her side as she did so. She was getting short of breath, but moving much faster than she expected, reaching the first level of the steps, when her grip-less brown travelling boots slipped on a bit of frost on the stone steps. She fell forwards with a yelp, and hit the stones hard, fortunately not falling down them.
She winced in pain, holding her knee where she had bruised it. Down below, she thought she heard the guard stir. She cursed to herself, quietly casting cure to stop the pain, and sighed.
Two more weeks until her birthday. Two more weeks to prepare. She had to keep trying. She had to keep practising. she had to be ready.
With a sigh, she got to her feet, and began to make her way back down the stairs to the bottom, ready to try again...
