Renitra quieted down again and tried to formulate her words. Eventually she said, “...You’ve had a run in with him before. Haven’t you?” When she heard Alex hired serial killers, her self pity ran dry, and righteous fury started to surge in her. Her hands tightened around the reigns. Due to her swapping her blue gauntlets for the welkin sleeves and gloves, Caius could if he chose to notice that her knuckles were whitening. Even her Chocobo looked back at Renitra and let off a very concerned warble. “How dare he drag the Scions name through the mud like that…” she said softly. “And Zenos… You’re not far off the truth Ser Caius…” she said. “I won’t bore you with the details… He has a lot to answer for with me as well… “ She tried to calm herself.
She had to change the topic before she lost her nerve and unloaded her baggage on Caius. “If it’s not imposing on you Ser Caius… It’s clear you know no knowledge of Hyadelin, my home land. In turn I have no knowledge of yours. Would you be willing to tell me about where you come from? We probably have overlap in our worlds. We use Chocobos, we take up disciplines of war, of magic, of the hand, and of the land… Part of me actually wonders, if you come from a reflection? You see an ancient myth said that the Mothercrystal of Hyadalyn sealed away an ancient avatar of evil, Zodiark…” she began. She was somewhat embellishing the story because she didn’t know it when the Warriors of Darkness explained it to her in the Ixali Capital… She didn’;t understand it when what was left of Minfillia explained the nature of an Umbral Calamity either. “When the Mothercrystal sealed Zodiark away, to ensure his seal was complete, she shattered the source into ten and three reflections. Thirteen worlds, somewhat mirroring the original. But seven of them were destroyed. Seven reflections forced back into the source through a violent natural disaster of clashing aetheric polarities…”
“I’m kinda going into the ‘boring scholar’ thing again…” Renitra realized. “Uh… Just tell me about your world. If you are willing to, I mean…”
"Yes. While I was in Sonora," Caius almost growled at the question. "Overheard my impassioned plea to His Highness to save the woman I love from being consumed by a parasite. Alex went out of his way to say that he could save her... But not to bother asking him because he doesn't want to."
He wouldn't bother telling her everything that Alex had done, he had said enough, and he didn't want to tell a prospective Dragonblade that he had just broken a criminal out of a Sonoran gulag, either. He didn't want to scare her off before Celes could even get a chance to test her. It sounded like this Zenos could be a problem, as well. "Why don't you talk to Celes about Zenos once you're there? You've had an incredibly arduous time, and it may help you if you can get time to relax and settle down before delivering that report. If this Zenos is a threat, it would be good for us to get as much information as we can."
Renitra proceeded to ask him a question, then hyperfixate on the subject before Caius could answer. While she was talking, they came to their destination. An airship terminal just a ways from the border between Provo and Torensten's territories. Caius scratched behind the ears of the chocobo he had been riding, part of him wishing he could take the creature with him. Maybe he should take on chocobo raising again someday, when his adventuring days slowed down? Regardless, he led the chocobos to the stable and dropped them off before buying two tickets for an airship to Torensten.
Because quite frankly, it would take too long by chocobo to get all the way there, and Caius had found out maybe half a day ago that some maniac had attacked Torensten, who Celes had to stop. So he needed to get back, and soon.
He had been listening, though. So when she eventually went back to her question, Caius took a moment to think on it.
"For us, magic was a rarity. Only exhibited by a handful. There was aether which could be harvested, but only the Nifelheim Empire knew how to do that, and they used it to power their magitek troops. Then there was the magic gifted to the Lucis Caelum and Nox Fleuret bloodlines by the gods. The Kings and the Oracles. The Kings of Lucis had a duty to protect the crystal, which was the source of magic created by the gods, to one day use it to protect the world from a blight called the Starscourge. A plague that turns people into daemons and when spread far enough, may blot out the sun itself."
He decided to start with one subject at a time, figured that would make it easier. "The King of Lucis was granted magic through the Ring of the Lucii, and with their passing, the soul of each King would be transported to the Ring to be worn by the next. Using their power as a conduit with the Crystal to make the next King stronger. Until the day the True King could rise and destroy this Starscourge. To protect Lucis and its crystal in the meanwhile, the King used this power from the Ring to form the Wall. A magical barrier that protects Lucis. And to empower those chosen to aid in that protection."
When security wasn't looking, Caius summoned his sword to his hand in a burst of blue light.
"Those chosen are called Kingsglaive. Borrowing the magic of their King to protect Lucis with their lives."

When she realised they had arrived, she slowly got off her own chocobo and gave it a hug. A small intimate sign of affection for a loyal animal who served people like her out of gratitude for the ride. “Thank you Chocobo.” She said before finally letting go and following after Caius. When he mentioned that she would report what she knew of Zenos to Celes when they arrived she froze. Her face paled at the memory of how his Resonant powers trounced her in Provo’s streets. “If you think it’s a good idea…” She began.
Thankfully her stomach didn’t need to evacuate its contents upwards today as Caius answered her questions about Eos. “A rarity huh? In Eorzea, magic was simply manipulating the worlds elements. It’s Aether. Most people in it have a genuine knack for it, and almost everyone has a natural affinity to learn magic if they so choose. The only ones who don’t are Garleans. Like Zenos, they have three eyes. Apparently the third eye is why they can't harness magic and Aether. But they have amazing spatial recognition. And I know that from the greatest Magitek engineer in all the land, Cid Garlond. I guess that's another similarity between our worlds huh? Magitek. The Empirealways used it for warmongering. Cid was actually supposed to be their chief engineer but he defected because he thought Technology should enlighten and spread good tidings, not war and bloodshed.”
Then Caius did a name drop. Kingsglaive. “Wait… YOU KNOW NOCTIS?!” She asked in a shrill shriek of stunned awe. “I uh… I… oh dear.. You see uh…” She looked away blushing over how she shrieked out. She didn't intend to be like that. She did remember a young man who mentioned the word Kingsglave though... “I met someone who gave me a power called Kingsglaive. Specifically to fight a being called Garuda. Apparently it was a messenger from… well it wasnt the Garuda of my world lets put it like that. He said his name was Noctis.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
She liked chocobos, so that was a point for her in his book that she was kind to animals. Her resemblance to Celes made it funny, though, as he couldn’t imagine the General doing any of that openly. Though she did secretly have a fascination with flowers… Did she actually hug chocobos when nobody was looking? Gods, now he was curious. She would probably never tell anybody that though, so it would likely forever remain a history. Unless he caught her in the act. Which he would never go out of his way to do, but…
Then came a talk about “aether”, and some of it sounded familiar to him from somewhere. But not familiar enough to point out, though it was likely based around some crap Alex had spewed considering they were from the same world. There was also a guy named Cid. Didn’t their world have a renowned Cid too? And so did Celes’ world? Weird.
Then Renitra almost made Caius point his own sword at her in alarm when she screamed at him. But realizing the context, he allowed his sword to disappear before the airport security could see him with it. Since, obviously, the screaming would get everyone’s attention. Everyone’s. Caius gritted his teeth sheepishly as he brought an arm to Renitra’s shoulder and began to guide her to the train-like airship. He handed over the tickets and herded Renitra inside, then to their seats.
“So Noctis gave you a power? I didn’t even know this world’s version even knew how to do it yet” Caius admitted inquisitively. She couldn’t have met him in her world, because that would be ridiculous. So it had to be the one here. Still what was this about a Garuda? “Wait. A Messenger came here? And attacked?”

Renitra tried to will her self to move into their compartment after Caius chose to gently guide her into the train-ship. She had felt someone move her this way a few times before and they were not good occasions so she tried her level best not to freak out.
Once they were inside and Caius asked her for more information her eyes focused and she blinked. “Huh? This world's Noctis? It didn’t happen in this world. It happened in mine! I remember the adventure exactly! It all began in Ul’dah when some people were freaking out over a strange man on the road to the city. I decided to go check it out. I saw a big black… curved carriage. With no Chocobo. And then I saw him. Short spiked black hair, blue eyes. Black shirt, jacket with short sleeves, and leggings that were stiff and black. He called them jeans. Oh and boots too!”
“He was slumped over in defeat. Apparently the carriage, or as he called it the Regalia was broken. He was looking for someone to help him. I tried to help him buuuut… I’m not super strong. Fortunately, enter Cid nan Garlond, Eorzea’s number one source on Magitek. He was more than happy to help so we managed to get his Regalia into a local outpost. Black Bush Station. It was also at the time people were talking about clockwork soldiers. By their description, Noctis recognised them flat out as MT troopers. They must be from Eos, I’m sure. Or where they called MA’s… anyway… he ran off to head them off. I went after him. I felt like he needed help. He was an impressive sight in combat. He kept drawing weapons out of thin air. Blades, hammers, spears… I was sporting a rather pretty rapier and crystal combination to harness Red Magic at the time…”

Caius Lucis Caelum
What kind of deranged maniac had Celes saved from these bandits? And why was every Celes lookalike seemingly downright psychotic? Because every word that came out of Renitra’s mouth sounded downright insane. Noctis was from Eos, and had been at some point zapped to Zephon. Noctis had never mentioned going to some other world, and how in the hell would he have? It wasn’t like people in Eos just traveled to different worlds like nothing. Yet, it was so ridiculous, her story was, that it was hard for him NOT to believe her. She knew every detail, from his powers, to even his car. And come to think of it, Alex had to have known him from somewhere, right? Alex only helped people that he had actually befriended, he had made that clear himself. So had he met Noctis at some point in his own world before he became all embittered and a jerk? Was that why Noctis put up with his ass?
Caius needed to lie down. Oh, and apparently they had a Cid too. Just like his world had a famous Cid. And Celes’ world had a famous Cid. What was with all of these Cids? Cidmania was running wild and he didn’t like the sound of it. Not that he had anything against people like Cid, it was just… Weird.
Wait, had she said that MTs had shown up in her world too? That…
“You had -DAEMONS- in your world?” Caius couldn’t help but interject. He had TRIED to be quiet and listen, but this was getting a little TOO crazy. “Like, actual daemons? The MTs that the Niflheim Empire created? Actual daemons? From our world? How the hell did they get into yours? How did NOCTIS get into yours?”
Post by Renitra Starspear on Jul 25, 2024 16:38:36 GMT -6
Renitra was about to continue about the clockwork MT soldiers when Caius interjected about Daemons. “Huh? MA…? oh right!” She remembered. “Only one. I originally thought it was a Voidsent until Noctis identified it as a Daemon. Voidsent come from a world of pure darkness known as the Void. They drink the Aether of the land and usually come to our world through dread pacts. I assume Daemons work the same way…” she trailed off hoping Caius would respond on that score.
After a small period she spoke again. “After the MTs in Thanalan we went north east, to my homeland of Gridania. There was reports of MTs in an abandoned manor there. Twelve knows how many times I've gone in there and cleared Voidsent out. That's where we found the MA Daemon. Noctis was sad that there was no way home from there. But he was happy that fighting an MA meant he was on the right track. At least that's what he thought. He decided to camp out that night and I joined him. I offered to give him a room at the Carmine Canopy, which is an Inn in Gridania.. but he insisted in the camp fire, these weird fabricin wooden frame chairs called ‘Deck Chairs’ and… camped I guess. We had a chat. Noctis told me about his three friends. What were their names again… Prompto… Gladius… Igneon?” She got the third Kingsglaive name wrong but she was close. “He was talking about how he was on an adventure with them. He didn't explain what the adventure was for but it was very serious. Must have been. He seemed pretty distraught when his Regalia carriage broke down. Next morning he opted to go fishing.” Her lips curved into a small smile at the memory. “It's funny. It's one of the most mundane things but he very much enjoyed it. Even I did! Even though I'm really bad at fishing… I guess it has to do with doing it with other people, you know?”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Of course, raising his voice had attracted attention from other passengers on the train. Because of course it had. Caius didn’t like to draw attention to himself, but he couldn’t help himself with the insane ramblings that came out of Renitra’s mouth. And yet, she wasn’t lying either. He could call it madness all he wanted, she was completely serious. So Caius listened as Renitra info-dumped on “Voidsent” and how she assumed daemons, or MTs, worked the same way. MT being the specific term used was even more concerning. MT was what they used to describe Niflheim’s infantry, their Magitech troopers. Who as they would later find out, were all daemons that had been bred in Niflheim’s labs, enslaved to their will and used as cannon fodder.
Caius’ hands found his head as she went on and on. She didn’t really need to convince him further that she had met Noctis, but she seemed intent on it. Caius knew he talked a lot when he became invested in something, so he tried not to judge Renitra too harshly. But he really would wish she’d calm down when he was trying to process the absolute batshit insanity she had thrown at him already.
“Prompto, Gladiolus, and Ignis” Caius calmly corrected the names that she had butchered. “They are Prince Noctis’ retainers, akin to family. They were out to stop the starscourge, a darkness that threatened to blot out the sun and flood our world with daemons.”
Well, at least Noctis had enjoyed himself while he was there. It was strange he had never mentioned this portal hopping adventure before… Caius supposed he would have to ask him about it. It wasn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility, after all. The Astrals had, apparently, sent Noctis here to Zephon too. Had it sent him to the world of Eorzea first? Was this all part of the test that the Astrals had set out for him, in order to prepare him to fight Ardyn and become the True King?
“To be frank, your story is batshit insane. But I believe you” Caius remarked far too bluntly. “So in short. Back in my world, I was a retainer for the Royal Family Lucis Caelum. I served Noctis after he took the crown as King, as one of his Kingsglaive. A special forces unit that borrows the Power of Kings to protect Lucis. I can sense a similar power coming from you, though it’s been dulled to where I wouldn’t have recognized it if I wasn’t making a concentrated effort. It’s likely that Noctis wasn’t able to bestow a lasting boon to you just yet. The one in my world was older, and had a better command of our crystal’s power.”

Renitra was about to go on about how she and Noctis took on Garuda when Caius held his hand up and told her he believes her. The pause was enough for Oleg the Meerkat to come out of his shoulder papoose, clamber onto her head and stomp on it indicating it's time for her to quiet down.
Renitra got the hint and emitted a very long breath. “You have no idea how long I've been waiting to tell someone about it.” She said in earnest. “I've told my friends in the Scions-”
Oleg chirped indicating that he knew she was lying. “Ok I told Krile?” She asked again. Oleg shook his head. “fine. I haven't told anyone. I didn't think they'd believe me. The only ones who actually knows bar me is that reporter for the Raven and Cid Garlond… and probably Biggs and Wedge too since they never leave his side…” she sighed again. “I've… gone through a lot Ser Caius. Too much for a normal man, woman, meerkat or Kingsglaive could or should go through…”
With his master now seemingly calm, Oleg jumped off Renitra's head and climbed back into his papoose as if nothing happened, although his beady meerkat eyes and nose were still visible as Oleg locked onto Caius, puzzling him out. “... That's Oleg.” Renitra said by way of introduction. “He's my… pet… only not a pet…. Companion? Buddy? Partner? I don't know which fits him better. But… I'm going on too much… you said your Noctis had better control over your crystal… how so?” she was now curious about Caius’ world and time and to that end wanted to know how the Noctis she knew and the one he knew were different. She stared with wide, eager and expectant eyes as she waited to hear Caius’ story from his own mouth.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Some kind of creature popped out of a bag and started smacking Renitra. Caius didn’t really know what to say or do about that – or the interaction that followed. Caius noted that if her only company for quite some time was some sort of lemur, it was little wonder she was as… Eccentric, as she was. Caius had still barely even remotely processed the psychological damage that came from years of your only real company being a beat up junker car that can’t speak.
She claimed that she had gone through a lot, too much for a normal person. Or a Kingsglaive. And that got a small laugh out of the actual Kingsglaive. “Trust me when I say — the more people you meet here, the more that will be true of them as well” Caius pointed out. If she knew the whole depths of the shit he’d seen, she’d realize he hadn’t exactly lived a normal life either. “I’m supposed to be dead, for one. I died, straight up. Had a hole in my chest and everything” Caius pointed out, as-ever with the bluntness of a hammer.
Renitra introduced Oleg, and Caius greeted the lemur thing with a wave. “I have an animal companion of my own, he isn’t here right now though” Caius chimed in, conveniently leaving out just what they were. Renitra would probably find out eventually. So then came the big question.
“To put it simply. The Noctis you met and the Noctis I knew are from different times. By what you’ve told me, you met him during their journey to fight the starscourge. I met him towards the end of that journey… Ten years later” Caius started out with, because a ten year timeskip is just the absolute best way to start a story. “Noctis spent a decade inside the crystal, returning with full command of his power and ready to end the starscourge. I was young, stupid, and I made an impression on him in the battle that ensued.”
Caius pulled at his collar to reveal a glowing red claw-like scar on his neck. “The enemy had enslaved the Infernian, Ifrit, and set it upon Lucis. So I had the bright idea to try and take it down. With no magic or kingly powers whatsoever. How I survived that act of foolishness, I don’t actually know.”
