The Dragonblades
To say that the attempt to plan for their escapade in Sonora had been a disaster was putting it mildly. It was a catastrophe filled with dissent, attempted sleep spells, trying to shame people for getting a bit too pent up at the sight of a beautiful woman and an attempted beer bottle mugging. To say that Caius wanted out of Sonora as soon as possible? Also an understatement. He hated it here. Despised it. Everything about this place felt wrong, and the incident at Tifa's bar only made it worse.
Sonora was corrupt to its core and unwelcoming to outworlders. As cold physically as it was spiritually. Caius didn't feel like he could relax for even a second here. He couldn't walk openly with Vordun, and so the dragon had been left in the care of the little Dragonblades outpost outside of the city that had been bought since his last visit. At the least, Vordun would be well taken care of away from the prying eyes of Sonoran officials. In the pits of this city, however, Caius wasn't so lucky. No Vordun, armor having to be packed into the glaive, and everyone around him was just as frozen and devoid of life as this city. It just felt so... Wrong. It SHOULD feel right. On the surface, it reminded him of his occasional trips to the city of Lestallum when he was a child. That city was beautiful, albeit crowded and full of roads and vehicles you had to watch out for. Torensten was more... Walkable, in comparison. But in Lestallum, they had been able to make due with how warm everyone was... Much like in Torensten.
There was no warm here. Just cold. Cold weather, cold roads full of unfeeling people who weren't that keen to stop even if you were literally about to get hit by their car. This place reminded him of home in some ways, sure... But instead of making him feel comfortable at all, it felt like a complete and utter perversion of what few cherished memories he had. He didn't want to be here. And the longer he stayed, the more it drove him closer to madness.
As much as he wanted to lay on the couch all day in the little outpost the Dragonblades had formed outside of town, counting down the days until they could break out their fellows and leave. He knew lingering there would arouse suspicion. Caius needed an alibi. To be seen around the city doing things. Things he didn't really know what or how to do.
And he did have other matters to attend to as well. One such thing involved Garnet, Queen of Alexandria, whom had accompanied him here and been given refuge in the outpost while Caius had gone to meet Noctis. Now that the pregame was settled, Caius had promised to meet Her Majesty and discuss their arrangement. Once they met in the city, Caius respectfully bowed at the sight of her. Caius likely looked strange in a black suit, and hair tied back. But it was how one blended in here.
"Your Majesty" he greeted at that. "I have made some discoveries regarding the magic nullifiers" came a much quieter addition. The walls had eyes and ears, and Caius wasn't taking any chances. "Why don't we grab a bite to eat and I can share what I have learned?"

'What if Bran Bal and Treno had a baby?' was not a question Garnet had ever expected to have to ask herself, but here she was. In Sonora. The baby fo Bran Bal and Treno. Well, if cities could have babies. Half sterile alien world with incomprehensible alien technology, and half dark, dangerous, unpleasant and doubtlessly crime ridden. She had spent most of her time at the small Dragonblades outpost, but had ventured into the city to meet Caius. She did, at least, feel that she was doing better than she did in her first time in Treno. Her gil was still firmly in her purse, for starters. But she had learned a lot since those early days as a naïve princess wandering the streets of Treno.
Still, she didn't like this city. It was thick with a mechanical stench she couldn't really describe, and the smoky, dirty vehicles that made their way around had her longing even for the simplicity of Lindblum. Say what you could about using mist to power vehicles, it was a lot cleaner than whatever they were using in Sonora. Still, she had to remember why she was there. She had endured worse to try and stop Kuja. A dirty, smelly city was the last of her problems.
Unlike Caius, she was still wearing her preferred outfit of an orange jumpsuit over a silky white blouse, the pendant still swinging around her neck, but she had added a traditional white mage cloak. Much like the one she had worn when she first fled from the castle, in what felt like several lifetimes ago. But it seemed nobody looked at each other twice in Sonora. Still, she hadn't quite expected to see Caius out of his armour, and in a suit. It was slightly strange, but not that far really from what, say, Zidane had worn back in Gaia. Just, somehow, less frilly, and more restrictive.
Caius seemed to bow, and refer to her as 'her Majesty'. She fought back a bit of a wince at that. For someone who had changed his entire attire to be undercover, it seemed that Caius was not particularly good at it. Maybe she could teach him some things, for once? "Dagger, please," she reminded him. She knew what Caius thought of her chosen undercover name, but it was, at least, less conspicuous than 'your Majesty' or 'Queen Garnet'. Or 'Priiiiiiiincess!!!!' while jumping up and down in clanking armour. So he was an improvement over Steiner. "And, really, there is no need to bow. Even were we not trying not to draw attention. I do not expect that from my friends," she explained. Truthfully, there was a time that someone greeting her without a formal salute would have seemed baffling, but after her adventures with Zidane, she found it stifling, and was happy to see it left behind.
Her eyes lit up a little at the news he had found of the magic nullifiers. Could this plan really work, after all? Usually when Garnet came up with plans on her own, she had watched them self destruct, or go horribly wrong, or her end up needing rescuing by Zidane. But Zidane wasn't here this time, and she had to find her own path. And it seemed that, for once, she might have been on the right track.
"Yes. Let us... grab... a bite..." she said, testing out the new phrase. Just when she thought she had mastered how to talk like an ordinary citizen, she ended up in a whole new world, with whole new slang to learn. It was a bizarre turn of phrase. How did you grab a bite? Both of those things were actions. Why not bite a grab? That made about as much sense to her. But she decided not to dwell on it.
"Please, lead the way. I'm eager to hear what you've learned," she said, trying to keep the excitement from her voice and sound neutral.

The Dragonblades
"Dagger" she reminded him, and Caius took a moment before it clicked and he nodded his head at that. "Right. Force of habit" he apologized quietly at that. "You have no idea how much our royalty drills it in", he managed to cheek in a whisper with a small smile. By what he'd seen of Noctis, he didn't seem to know how hard that was drilled in either, so it wouldn't surprise him if Garnet was the same. While he thought the Dagger name was silly, however. It was the one she had chosen. It was going to get her some looks, though. "You're going to make people think you're some sort of underground cartel member calling yourself Dagger, but I will oblige."
She did brighten up when Caius brought up the information he had learned. But seemed to have some trouble with the lingo, however. This kind of lingo was normal for Caius, given the era he was from. But for Garnet, he supposed it would be different. Different world, after all, likely with different use of language. Caius' use of lingo meanwhile, was similar to that of which was seen in Sonora, but with a formality that would be better suited in Torensten.
"A bite to eat, it is slang based off taking a bite out of food. Normally used for a quick stop for food instead of anything too grand and time-consuming" Caius did his best to try and explain its meaning and application to her. "A 'quick bite' is also used for the same purpose. And speaking of..."
They stopped in front of an eatery, of which they could probably smell the grease from the entrance. The doors opened by themselves as they stepped on the grate, which Caius still wasn't quite used to. The smell was addicting, but Caius knew that the food inside wasn't too healthy and would probably risk giving them both a bit of a stomachache.
"Welcome to Smile Burger. It's not exactly suitable food for someone of your..." he trailed off, before lowering his voice. "Status. But it's cheap, quick, the only place in the city that I know, and it will fill you up for the time being. And gives us a place to sit and talk, hopefully without being disturbed."

Garnet smiled, and shook her head slightly when Caius apologised, making an excuse regarding how much his own royalty drilled it in. It didn't surprise her. Her mother had been pretty insistent about titles too. Garnet had never seen it that way. But she knew plenty who did. "Back in Alexandria, my home, I usually found it was everybody else who insisted on the titles. I have this friend back there, he's Captain of my guard, and... getting him to call me anything but 'Princess' was so difficult!" she half laughed, but there was a slight trace of sadness, as she wondered where Steiner was now. She could only imagine how distressed he was if she had disappeared without a trace. And this time, there would be no way for him to find her...
"Yes, I am sure people will look at me, and think 'oh, she runs an underground cartel'," Garnet replied sarcastically, hands on her hips. She wasn't too sure what an underground cartel actually was, but she was pretty sure nobody was going to think she was a member. She still didn't see the big deal with 'Dagger'. Nobody had acted like it was an odd name back home. Maybe Zidane had just not wanted to tell her, but she didn't think so. Maybe it was a Zephron thing.
"Yes, I figured it out," Garnet said as he began to explain what he meant. Realising that might be a bit rude, she paused. "Uh, thank you, though. I have had a lot of practice learning how to use slang very quickly," she said proudly. Okay, maybe she still put a lot of thought into it, but Zidane had always said she was doing well, and while he was probably just being nice, she liked to believe him.
"I wish you wouldn't do that," Garnet huffed slightly when he said about the burger place. "My status is the same as everybody else. I am just a person. I'm nobody special. Least of all here, in Zephron. And I think you'll find I've eaten in places considerably rougher than this," she said with confidence. After all, it couldn't be any worse than Treno, could it?
Although...
"Just one question before we order," she said. "...What's a burger?"

The Dragonblade
"Well, if you're a servant of royalty in my world. Your teachers drill into you the importance of using those formalities. To the point it becomes like breathing, and not using those terms takes a level of effort to resist your trained instincts and habits. It wouldn't surprise me if your Captain was the same" Caius brought up quietly when Garnet began to talk about her Captain, and how he and others were unable to get past the formalities. It seemed that sort of thing was just multi-universal with royalty. Go figure. "You're much like my own King. He was never big on them either."
A blue flash of light emitted from Caius' pocket before they entered, as Caius remembered in that moment what had happened at Tifa's establishment. A major chain restaurant would be even more likely to have those things. And as they walked in, Caius tried to use his magic again. The frown that ensued soon after stated the result of that attempt. Still, he found a smirk moments later as Garnet found a bit of sass when it came to her name and its bearing. "Yes, Dagger" Caius remarked with a slightly playful tone, ensuring everyone was busy clamoring over the front counter for their food to notice him before pulling out his own dagger and spinning it atop his finger. "I'm sure nobody will think that at all."
And with that, he stashed it since he couldn't magick it away. As for the lingo? Caius simply shrugged slightly when Garnet said she figured it out already. Whether she figured it out herself or from him, the objective was fulfilled. That was all he cared about. Though it seemed like she had experience with this. Zidane's influence, he would imagine. "Sounds like you have a few stories to tell. You will have to share them sometime" Caius brought up with a small smile, though that changed to a look of surprise when she asked what a burger was.
To be honest, he had kind of forgotten how to even describe it himself. He hadn't really eaten one, sans the last Sonora visit, in years.
"Good question" Caius remarked as he got in line, scratching his still-growing beard in thought. "I guess you could say it's like... A variation of a sandwich, you know, where you put two pieces of bread together and then put things between them. But with a meat saucer in the middle. Full of toppings like cheese, lettuce, tomato -- the sign above should say what you can put on it and you can choose. Then places like this tend to cook it in grease for flavor, though while the flavor is nice, it's not all that healthy. It's meant to be addicting, makes you want to come back."
Speaking of which, Caius looked up to read said sign. He'd forgotten that Cissnei had ordered for him last time. He would need to actually figure out what he wanted before he ordered. Especially if he would have to help Garnet in doing so. Fortunately, most of the foods looked familiar from lingo in his own world, but it had been such a long time too...
"Oh, by the way. To simplify the intel I've discovered. Try using your magic. Any small, subtle use will do."

Garnet listened to Caius's explanation, and she was sure that he was right. There was obviously a force of habit among those who worked in the castle, who knew how to address her, that her desire would never change. And it wasn't that Garnet didn't respect formality; there was a way things were done, it was just that... well, she just felt that sometimes people saw her as a Queen, and not as herself. And it was a trap Caius often fell into. He was constantly referring to her status, not who she was as a person. It was why, even now, sometimes she found herself thinking of herself as 'Dagger', as if that was who she was with all the titles and formality stripped away. Who she was if she was just an ordinary girl.
But, she knew that would never be the case. Even if she wasn't Queen, she was one of the last Summoners. Her life would never be ordinary...
"I understand the importance of etiquette," Garnet admitted after a moment. "But... I have never liked the idea that royalty would have 'servants'. Yes, people work for you, and assist you, but I always felt that.. once somebody 'served' you, you forgot who you were. A Queen is not somebody who should be served. They are somebody who serves. A Queen's responsibility is to her people, not the other way around. But... sadly, even in my world... people... often forgot that..." she admitted, thinking of her mother for a moment, after Kuja's corruption. Even Garnet herself, in her younger years, she was sure had times when she had acted the spoiled princess. She had always tried not to, but no child raised in the lap of luxury avoided that entirely. She still remembered the first time Dr Tot had shown her a globe, and how she had wondered why it was round when the castle wasn't...
"Stories. Yes. I have... seen some strange things on my travels," she admitted. Even Caius, with all of his experience and well travelled nature, she imagined, would find some of her stories unusual, she was sure. Even he would surely balk at the story of Terra, or what the Invincible had been, or an army of airships battling an army of silver dragons to try and break into a world beyond worlds to save all of reality.
"Well, I think you missed your calling as a salesman. You made that sound wonderfully appetising," Garnet said, the sarcasm playing in her eyes even if her voice remained impressively deadpan. Honestly, a sandwich with meat (although she noted he was non-specific as to what meat) sounded fine. There was a time when Garnet struggled with the idea of sandwiches. Food without cutlery? What kind of thing was that? She still remembered Steiner yelling at Zidane the first time he had expected Garnet to eat with her hands. But now? After a year's travel in all kinds of conditions? She hardly thought twice about it.
When he asked her to use her magic, she looked a little confused, but did as he asked, attempting to cast a simple Cure spell. However, as she did so, the magic simply... didn't form. She paused, and tried again. Still nothing. It was a familiar sensation. Something she'd felt in the anti-magic field back in Oeilvert. She hesitated, and looked over at Caius. "Here?" she asked, confused. "I thought... an anti-magic field was something the Sonoran Government would hide. Back in my world, only a very ancient, very advanced castle had such a thing. But here it is... in a restaurant?" she asked. Her tone was a mixture of surprised and yet, somehow, excited. After all, if they were this easy to find, then perhaps, just perhaps, this mission would be easier than she thought...

The Dragonblade
It was difficult for Caius to see past her title, even if he did try. Having that decorum hardwired into your brain with a drill wasn’t something that could be amended in a short amount of time. Especially when Garnet was literally here in Sonora on account of her sense of responsibility as Alexandria’s Queen. So long as she continued to act in her capacity as Queen, that separation would not come easily. Not that Caius couldn’t eventually look past it more, she would certainly have an easier time of it than Noctis would since she wasn’t his liege, compared to the predicament of being the future King of Lucis.
He did smile however when she stated her take on things. “You and Noctis would get along, I think” Caius remarked at that. It had been refreshing to find out that Noctis wasn’t anything like the picture that training had painted of royalty. And it was actually nice in of itself to see that Garnet was the same way. Even if he didn’t show it, with force of habit coming into play.
It seemed that she had stories to tell after all. Caius’ expression brightened at that. “I would like to hear them, when there is time. I always enjoy hearing them. Telling them too, sometimes” he expressed at that, though gave a soft chuckle when she brought a touch of sarcasm to his description of the food here. “They do taste good. Very good” he did make sure to note, though there was a glint of amusement in his eyes. “That’s the problem.”
Anything that makes you want to come back to Sonora is a dangerous thing.
Garnet would discover soon after that the building had an anti-magic nullifier, and Caius slowly nodded his head. “Turns out there are far more in circulation than we had previously thought” he whispered in turn. Whether that would help them or not, he wasn’t sure. He was sure that they were still handed out by the Sonoran government, so they were going to have to figure out how to obtain one still. But if there was a factory somewhere…
They would soon find themselves at the front of the line. Caius went first, ordering a burger, fries and a drink. He could always work off the grease.

A playful smile danced across Garnet's lips as he told her that she would get on well with his own Prince. Or was it King? She wasn't sure that he had ever said. She assumed a Prince, by how he spoke of him.<br> "See, you can do it!" Garnet laughed a little. "You call him 'Noctis'. Not 'Prince Noctis' or 'His Royal Highness' or anything like that. It's not so hard," she encouraged. If he could do it when speaking about his literal Prince, she was sure he could do it when referring to her. "Does he never use a hidden name?" Garnet inquired, just to see if he had something like she had 'Dagger'. Caius had made it perfectly clear how he felt about 'Dagger', but she wondered if his own Prince had his own version.
"Then, when we have time, I shall be sure to tell you some," she smiled. "Did you know I have been to another planet? Not this one, or my original one, but another planet altogether? Or that one time I hid in a bag full of pickles to sneak across a border? Or we once tamed a giant insect to carry us to another continent by feeding it plants through a vast network of underground tunnels? Or that we once battled an army of silver dragons in a highly advanced airship we stole from the other world?" she asked, naming just some of the more absurd things she had done.
"Interesting," Garnet remarked when he confirmed that there were more anti-magic devices in circulation than they thought. "I suspect our mission just became easier. We could steal one. I suspect it would be easier to steal from a restaurant than a military facility," she pointed out, whispering the idea. "...or, we open our own business here. Something that would mean they would provide us an anti-magic device," she suggested after a moment. "If we could find something we could bring to Sonora, they may allow us to establish something here, which would give us access," she speculated.
She followed behind Caius, placing the same order that he did. Just because she wasn't a stranger to hand food it didn't mean she knew it well enough to pick her own meal.

The Dragonblade
Caius rolled his eyes with a small laugh when Garnet rightfully called him out for referring to Noctis by name. Must have been a big “gotcha” in her eyes, and even Caius seemed to find amusement in her discovery of and pointing this out. “It’s complicated” Caius admitted then, considering how to best word this. “This world’s Noctis ordered it of me. While he is not the same man that I served, technically, he is a decade younger than my own liege. He is, still, technically my liege at the same time. It still feels like an order from my superior, yet I did not find it as difficult as it could have been either as he is not yet “His Majesty” as I know him. And even then, I slip up and call him Your Highness when addressing him directly much of the time. Or Your Majesty, if I forget to use this Noctis' title.”
A bit more consideration went into how to then relate this to Garnet. “You meanwhile, would be equivalent to… A foreign dignitary. Of which we have it hammered in ever the harder to address by formality. There is more room for error with your own liege, as it can be improved on. With a ruler, a Queen at that, from another nation. There is far more pressure because you cannot so easily fix matters with an offended outside party. So if I were to be addressing Lady Lunafreya, the Oracle of Tenebrae, I would have eyes staring into the back of my head at all times. So as to ensure I do not offend not just Lady Lunafreya, but Tenebrae itself.”
Funny, considering she was here too.
“I am sure that in time I will be able to use your name more adequately. My only request is to bear with me. Old habits die hard” he then remarked with a slight smirk, at least offering some hope that this could be amended. It just needed to be given time. She then asked if Noctis used a hidden name, to which he shook his head. “Likely felt there was no need.”
Their names and statuses did not carry into Sonora. And he had the distinct impression that Noctis wasn’t intending on coming back here.
Caius listened with a fully focused and curious ear as Garnet became to bring up the short versions of several stories all laced into a single journey. Another planet was definitely a new one for Caius, though he had been given the impression that Garnet had been there considering she talked about Kuja blowing it up. Just hadn’t really thought much about it until now. Then there was fighting dragons on airships in what sounded like a big, large scale battle, and his personal favorite of the lot: The pickle sack. That one got a small laugh out of him. “I will keep that in mind the next time I need to sneak in somewhere” Caius remarked, though hoped that he wouldn’t actually have to do that considering the strength of their odor. Caius had been through worse, but it didn’t make it any less pleasant.
To his surprise, she had just ordered the same as him when he had been about to offer to help. With a slight shrug, he would move to find a table after they took their number. Once they were sat down, Caius appraised the information given for a moment.
"Not easily accomplished. If you try to sell something related to your magic, well... I'm sure the anti-magic fields give that away" Caius mused aloud as he did genuinely try to think of ideas. So far though, all that came to mind were what they'd have to keep in mind. "Outside of combat and rulership, what would you say are matters you are skilled in?"

[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet listened as Caius explained, and not for the first time, he reminded her of Steiner. More subtle, certainly, but just as stuck in his ways. But Steiner had the excuse of being her knight. Caius's explanation, that she was a foreign dignitary to him, she supposed made a level of sense. But she didn't particularly like that answer. "Perhaps it would help if you didn't think of me as a foreign dignitary, but as a friend?" Garnet suggested. After all, there was no Alexandria there for her to be Queen of. She realised that was something that made Zidane so special to her. It wasn't that he ignored she was a Princess when they met, but that he saw past that. He didn't treat her as if she was somehow different, but instead, saw her as a person. He understood her upbringing was part of her personality, but he also didn't see it as a barrier. He treated her as a friend and a person from the moment they met. Instead of some kind of important political force to be kept at arm's length.
Garnet smiled a little. "I suppose there is no need for me to use an alias here, but..." Garnet paused, and smiled to herself. "Dagger... brings back some special memories to me. When I chose it, most people I knew still refused to use it. But those who did... I knew saw me in a way I had never been seen before. They didn't see the Princess of Alexandria. They saw the person that I was. They saw... Dagger," Garnet explained. "It meant more to me than many realised when they used that name... Even if it was just a silly alias," she admitted.
He mentioned the pickle story, and Garnet just laughed lightly. She didn't particularly want to experience that again herself, but she'd do whatever was necessary in the situation.
Her thoughts were derailed however by his next question. What was she skilled in apart from rulership and combat? Well, firstly, she was flattered that he thought she was skilled in combat. But secondly, it was the kind of question that had her suddenly sit back with sobering realisation. What WAS she good at? She paused for a moment as she tried to think. Caius was right. No white mage clinic could be set up in Sonora. And even if it could, it wouldn't require an anti-magic field.
That was when the idea hit her.
"Theatre," she answered suddenly. "I have always enjoyed theatre. I once played the part of Princess Cornelia on stage in Alexandria at every short notice, and, well, I rather suspect my performance was somewhat... unforgettable," she smiled. That was an understatement. "But a theatre would require an audience, and thus, an anti-magic field to keep them safe. And Kuja has a vested interest also. It might even lure him to us, and, as I believe the phrase goes, kill two chocobos with one stone," she said, rather proud of using that slang term.
