Terra could not help but smile widely. The slight cool air that touched her skin inside of the morning air was the cause of the smile that stuck upon her face. Alongside that the cool air felt amazing as she took in several deep breaths and after inhaling each breath she let the breath linger for a few seconds before releasing the held breath. Releasing each held breath slowly she took the moment to extend her arms over her head and stretch out her shoulders and back. As she let out the last of the breaths she let her arms fall down to her sides as she walked along. She loved Torenstein as the city made her feel safe enough that she was not always looking over her shoulder expecting to get ambushed and killed or robbed at any moment.
Slowly Terra was heading for one of her favorite places inside of Torenstein. This walk was needed by Terra as she had met an interesting young woman named Yuffie a few days earlier and it had given her many things to think about. Through this young girl she had found out that Celes was still here and running around doing good deeds alongside protecting others as only she could. These things had brought a smile to Terra's face and it made her proud to call Celes her friend. Yet despite her own knowledge that she would forever call Celes a friend she did not know if Celes would reciprocate those feelings of friendship 2with the Esperkin. There would be a time and place for her to meet her friend once more and once that day came she would approach it with a smile upon her face and many stories of her own travels.
Her walk had taken her toward the boardwalk of Torenstein as she had come to enjoy this little area more than most others within the city. Especially when it was the earlier in the day as it was right in the here and now. Her legs brought her there without much hesitation and she moved to the edge of the boardwalk and finding a spot on the railing that overhung the water beneath her feet made her smile grow a little wider. Leaning forward she rested her arms on the railing in front of herself. Gazing out over the water she could not help but allow her mind to wander and think about how these waters would look flying through the sky on either the Falcon or Blackjack. She was so lost in thought that it took a few moments to register that something had landed upon her head.
In a singular motion she could not help but swing her arms and attempt to swat the seagull that had landed upon her head. "Gah... Blasted bird. I am not a perch for you now fly off...." Yelling out Terra could not help herself but flail for a few moments before recollecting herself. Glancing around she hoped that no one had seen that display but there was always a chance that someone had caught that hilarious scene.

The Dragonblades
"Take your sodded seeds and be off" a calm but firm and slightly irritated voice called out as a tall gentleman with long blonde hair tied back would toss birdseed into the waters in order to ward off the seagull who had just perched itself onto a woman's head before she attempted to send it onto its way. The offending seagull had just attempted to make off with said hair tie in the moments before, mistaking it for food. So perhaps the long, exasperated sigh that followed held more than a touch of justification.
Tomoe had been out for the day, on a date with her new girlfriend he had heard. And Caius was still awaiting a reply from his co-leader in regards to the possibility of hiring further administrative staff. So the warrior had found himself cooped up in a crowded room full of mercenaries while he sat at the desk working at paperwork for jobs himself. He had been able to learn how to do it, even if he was a bit slower at it than the other two who were more suited. Still, it was better that at least someone did it, instead of it just sitting there. Unfinished. Mocking him with its... Unfinished-ness every single time that he dared look at it. But even Caius had to take a break every here and then. Mostly because one of the mercenaries had to tell him he needed to take one. "Five more minutes, I'm almost done" Caius had said twice in the span of fifteen minutes before he was met with a blade pointed at his face.
So now he was out here getting some fresh air. And the feeling of the port's sea-salty air hitting your face and the smell of water was always a refreshing one that he was sure would likely perk him right back up. Or at least, it had been until the dreaded seagull had tried to make off with his hair tie. The mercenary was still struggling to tie his hair back again as he approached the next intended target of the seagull's destructive rampage.
"I trust it didn't make off with anything of yours?"

Terra was silently fuming at the seagull as it took off away from her. Thankfully it had not taken away anything from her as she could not help but sigh audibly once more. Thankfully it seemed that no one had seen the disastrous scene that she had just been in. Yet it went away as it seemed that someone had seen the scene as she heard footfalls approach and then a voice echo out toward her. Well mostly the voice was toward the bird who had taken off toward the seed that the man had tossed off the side and into the water.
Turning Terra could not help but tighten up her face as she patted her head and smiled toward Caius. “No… that horrible beast did not make off with anything. Usually I have no issues with the bird but I guess the sun must of hit my barrette just right and it caught his fancy.” Speaking up with her calm demeanor she took a moment to look over the man. It seemed he was another of those military types and yet there was something else. It was as if she had seen his face before on some of the boards around town. What was it that he could of been and then it hit her.
“I thought I recognized you. You are on those posters for the man who saved the city from the Kraken. I think they said you are Caius Dragelion on the posters. You must be the leader that Yuffie spoke about then that means you….” Terra’s train of thought dribbled away as she realized just who this man was and how it seemed that once more she was close to someone that knew Celes here on Zephon. She knew that there was little she could do if she wanted to keep doing good around the planet; she would eventually run into her friend and have to speak with her.
Taking a few moments to let silence sink in between them she allowed her smile to return to her face before giving him a slight bow as she spoke. “Where are my manners to another hero of Torenstein. I am Terra Branford. It is a pleasure to meet in person one of the leaders of the Dragonblades. Yuffie spoke quite fondly about you and your organization.” Her composure came back rather quickly as she spoke to Caius. Her mannerisms of moving her hands and arms settled as she did not do anything out of the ordinary for herself. Though as she let her mind calm down she decided to just speak out one more thing before letting Caius speak out anything else.
”Is Celes doing well? I do hope that she has found a purpose here in helping others. She deserves to be happy and not held back to what all happened to us.”

The Dragonblades
That was good, he supposed. It seemed she wasn't used to the birds being troublesome, though Caius knew that the birds were a problem whenever they wanted to be. It was typically a matter of their mood. Having something shiny didn't help your chances of avoiding their eyes, though. But the girl seemed to be studying him in silence shortly after, and Caius blinked a few times as he tilted his head in minor curiosity. Did he have something on his face, perhaps? No, in fact it wasn't that at all. It seemed that she recognized him. It was still strange, having people recognize him even if he had never met them before. Caius was, unfortunately, still getting used to this after the whole thing where he stood in front of all of Torensten telling stories about the whole Kraken ordeal. And then there was the statue unveiling ceremony, which was also... Weird. Caius was still a little awkward about going to the square after that. But now, between posters, newspapers and now a statue, it seemed like all of Torensten knew his face. Talk about awkward.
But it wasn't just simple renown that had caught the young woman's attention. First came the mention of Yuffie, who had called him the leader of the Dragonblades. Wait, Yuffie? Calling him the leader? While Caius nodded to confirm her suspicions, there was a hint of confusion in his eyes. That didn't sound like Yuffie at all. What wording had she used? Had this young lady just read into what she was saying and figured it out herself? Because that sounded more likely than Yuffie actually saying he led the shin-dig and not her.
Then came the introductions. Terra Branford. An acquaintance of not just Yuffie, but... Celes?
Terra... Terra... He'd heard that name before, hadn't he? Hadn't Celes mentioned a Terra in her stories about the Returners? So this was that Terra? Caius looked her up and down a moment, as though she may be some sort of apparition that could reveal itself to be a monster at any moment. She did not appear to be a monster, though, so for the time being he would relax slightly and nod his head.
"Caius, a pleasure to meet you, Terra" he introduced himself then, even if she already knew. It was just the polite thing to do. "Celes is doing well. She is currently on a... Working vacation, I suppose we could call it. Wandering the region while I handle things back here. I am not sure when she will return, unfortunately. She is greatly missed amongst us, but by my understanding this was done for her own happiness, so I hope this absence will only aid her in finding the happiness that we both seem to find that she deserves."
Caius scratched his chin a bit in thought, considering what could be done. "Have you had a chance to see her yet, since coming to this world? If not, I can try to reach her for you. She checks into one of our bases once in awhile. I do my best to correspond with her when I can. Have you only just arrived here? Do you need help with anything in the meanwhile until I can reach her for you?"

As Caius remained quiet Terra couldn't help but feel that she had said something wrong or at least said something that might have made him recoil a little from her. Yet despite this she decided that she was not going to go anywhere and instead she was going to focus on introducing herself to Caius and possibly hearing about Celes and how she was. Though as he spoke up and introduced himself she could not help but smile as it was a much more traditional introduction and one that she was used to hearing. She even gave him a slight bow of her head in acknowledgement of his words. Listening to him speak about how Celes was on something of a vacation made her nod a little more vigorous then before. It was good to hear she was attempting to do something calming and not just work all the time.
“She does deserve happiness… As for meeting her. I have not had the courage to speak with her in the several years I have been here on Zephon. I have heard of her exploits but even after what I did here in Torenstein I did not approach her. If we are to meet up then we will. There is nothing else to it after all.” Terra responded as she couldn't help but speak what was on her mind. As she would not approach Celes instead she was going to let her lead her life as she had no idea where Celes was nor if this was the same Celes that had been there at her side when her Esperkin powers slipped from her on the Falcon.
With a sigh she lifted a hand and ran it through her hair to push a stray lock out of her vision in front of her right eye. As she did she spoke up. ”You asked if there is anything that I want… That is simple. I want to join the Dragonblades and help the people of this realm just as I defended the people back in my world. I have done it once and I want to do it once more.”

The Dragonblades
She had purposely kept from meeting her? Caius quirked a brow in quiet confusion at the thought that despite all they had apparently been through, Terra had decided not to face her. He didn't understand. Celes would surely be thrilled to see one of her Returner friends again, right? While they had not been terribly close, apparently, she had spoken glowingly of Terra herself. A bit less glowingly of a few others, but he was terrably sure that she had specifically spoken well of this one in particular. Had something happened?
"You... Have been here for years?" Caius echoed, now growing more bewildered by the second. All those years and she had avoided Celes? What in the world was going on between the two of them that had led her to that decision? Celes hadn't been terribly hard to find for the last while, something she had been very irritable about he had found out during their last few talks prior to her vacation. Something he wished she had alerted him to earlier so he could have assuaged those feelings long ago, but it was what it was.
And then Terra proclaimed she wished to join the Dragonblades. But that would put her in direct proximity of Celes, wouldn't it? And stranger yet...
"If you wanted to join the Dragonblades, how come you haven't dropped by the Rest? We could have talked on this some time ago" Caius inquired curiously, a touch suspicious of all of this. But still doing his best to be understanding. "If you worked alongside Celes as part of the Returners, then I have no problem with inducting you. However, Celes is my co-leader. And if you two have history, especially something that would merit your avoiding her. I think it is best that I gain her approval in the matter. I can get in touch with her, if you are still interested."

Terra would nervously nod toward Caisu as he spoke out that she had been avoiding Celes for years. It was not something that she was proud of, instead it was a point of shame for her. Yet despite that she had a reason for the absence from Celes’ life. Lowering her head she turned her gaze out toward the ocean. Looking out over the waves just as she used to in Mobliz she took in a deep breath. “There was a reason that I had to stay away from her Sir Caius. I was a risk to her and to many others if I was not able to get control over myself. I noticed it shortly after I had helped Torenstein against the being of Chaos…”
Lifting her gaze as the winds caught her green hair causing it to blow back toward the man to whom her back was. Though as she let the silence speak out between them she listened to him speak about why she had not come by their base of operations and a full explanation as to why they were avoiding one another made her lightly chuckle. Raising up her right hand she would use it to get his attention as she would find the words as she turned back to look him face to face.
”If you promise to not freak out I will explain to you exactly why I could not just show up at your home base… that and I will show you the reason.” Taking a breath she remained quiet as she waited for his response to her words. Once he agreed she tok another nervous breath as she inhaled deeply before looking around quickly to make sure noone else was around. Exhaling she let the magic flow around herself and glow from deep within and she would Morph in front of him into her Esperkin self.
Taking a few moment to allow the wind to flow over her now fur covered self she would speak back up. ”It was because of this I could not be around her nor anyone else… When I arrived here on Zephon the magic coursed back through me I found it easy to use but as time went along I started to have more and more difficulty with it. The magic kept overwhelming me and causing me to spontaneously transform into the state you see in front of you. Plus it would make my magic horribly unstable. A simple Fire spell would come out with the force of a Firaja spell. Then the next time I called upon it nothing would happen. It has taken me years to fully understand the magic as best as I could in order to change back and forth willingly into this side of myself and back.”
As she spoke she would transform back into her normal looking self without so much as batting an eye nor breaking her gaze with Caius. Taking a few more moments to gather her thoughts she continued to speak. “I could not come back til I had control and… well I would like for you to tell her that you have found me and that I am looking forward to seeing her once more. I wanted to also see all the good that was done in your groups name firsthand before I wanted to extend my services to assist you. If that makes any sense.”

The Dragonblades
Caius was definitely skeptical, though it wasn't hard to see why. While he knew Celes could handle herself, it was still his duty as friend and comrade to prevent someone from entering their organization that could do her harm. Or their own comrades, for that matter. Caius listened as Terra would explain that she had previously been a risk to Celes and to others. Well, that wasn't suspicious at all, no. She talked of a time long ago, years ago even. Long before the formation of the Dragonblades when Chaos had attacked Torensten. Before Caius himself had even been active in these affairs -- he had been focused on evacuating civilians at the time. Now though, he was strong enough to take the fight to these fiends directly. But what about that encounter had made Terra decide that she had to stay away?
She asked him to promise not to freak out, which got a nod of his head. Caius quietly brought a hand behind his back however, unsure of how this was going to go. It wasn't that he held any dislike or disdain for the young woman, but Caius was not the kind of person to let himself be caught off guard if he could help it. He kept a stern calm in his expression. The hand behind his back could summon a blade at any moment, so that was enough to keep him outwardly stoic.
Magic began to dance and swirl, and Caius' hands tightened. Terra was transforming, and Caius' heart began to race. But he continued to hold that calm. He knew it was for the best. It was better for impressions. And if her intentions were indeed of malice, then she couldn't know that he was ready for her. And then she changed. A creature he had never seen nor heard of before. Yet she kept speaking, indicating that she indeed held at least some semblance of control. She went on to explain that she had started having difficulties with her magic, and had to stay away, but after an amount of time so great that not even she seemed to understand the extent of just how long it had been, she was able to keep it under control.
Wait, did she pronounce it as Firaja? Just how powerful in magical artes was this one? He had only heard of the spell, not ever seen it used. But his Firaga was powerful. Firaja? He didn't want to imagine. Now at least he knew why she had hidden away, even if he couldn't help but remain a touch skeptical. Caius took a deep breath then, when she would transform back without difficulty. She relayed her instructions, then, as well as a tell that she had been scouting the Dragonblades before making her decision.
"I see."
Sheesh, what kind of mess had Celes left him with?
"I suppose I should be grateful that your scouting has found us worth it. I will find a means to get in touch with Celes and explain the situation to her. For the time being however, do you have a place to stay? I am on my off-time if you would like to walk with me and talk about what has led you to this world. Celes told me a bit about the Returners, but I don't know all the details."
Post by Terra Branford on Oct 11, 2022 18:46:20 GMT -6
It seemed that her words had had an impact upon Caius. As Caisu seemed to be dumbfounded with her speaking of the ancient spells she had heard others speak about in passing and that she had tried to use. The only time that she could even attempt to use it it nearly burned her up even with her blasting it far away from her. Despite her words to stay calm she had paid attention to the fact that his arm had moved toward what she could only assume was a knife or sword behind his back. That was something that she had expected so it honestly didn't bother her at all.
As she was back to her normal state she could not help but give a gentle smile toward Caius and turn her gaze toward the sea. Listening to Caius speak up and understand her thoughts made her smile stay. With that she kept her gaze away and out at the ocean. Listening to him speak she could not help but nod a few times before speaking up. “I would be honored to walk along the person that has kept my friend sane and calm through these many years. For that you will always have my gratitude Caius. As for speaking about the Returners… I would be honored to speak about our friends. Each one of them are great people and are important to us both.”
Speaking Terra turned back to him with her gentle smile plainly visible upon her face. Despite that she could not help but think about the words that she was going to say. There were so many different things that she could speak upon first but the first thing she felt would have to be explaining what she was to the man and what had fully happened. Closing her eyes she took in a deep breath and then opened them slowly as she exhaled.
“I guess I can start off this conversation with explaining to you what I am and what happened to us in those final days. Sir Caius I am something called an Esperkin. In our world there were once beings of immense magical power called the Espers. They could wield magic in all its forms and strengths to fight or defend others. I… am the only living one remaining as Kefka captured or killed all of them. Yet I am not a pure blooded one instead I am the result of an Esper falling in love with my human mother. My father Maduin was a stoic fighter and guided us as we fought back against Kefka in his blighted hellscape.” Terra spoke slowly and with a purpose as she walked beside Caius. Her words were quiet enough so that just the two of them could hear it.
”The Returners made it all the way to the pinnacle of his power. We fought the avatars of magic on our planet and we destroyed them. Then we fought and killed the man who held the reins of a god through our efforts, but at the cost of all magic upon our world. All of our allies who had been blessed by the Espers magic knowledge lost their connection to those spells. Yet I… I felt it more intrinsically than anyone else. Being basically a being of pure magic I felt it rip and tear at my very soul and then it was gone. It was that way for months before I wandered through a dense fog to this world and my magic returned to me. Modified by this planet but restored to its full power and then some.” She finished speaking and sighed as she finally caught her breath. There was much more to speak about but this would work for now.

The Dragonblades
She spoke quite formally, perhaps even moreso than Caius himself. He had to wonder what sort of upbringing this woman had to bring this about. Celes had some formality, but she was more casual in her speech than Caius was and she had at one point been the General of an army. He couldn't help but be a little bit curious. Not to mention, what was that transformation of hers? If it gave her the power to use such magic...
Clearly, there was much for Caius to learn about this one. Especially if they intended on becoming a member of the Dragonblades. At the least, fighting together meant he would learn more about her on the battlefield.
"I don't know about sane and calm" Caius admitted with a small laugh. "We've had our share of spats. I'm sure I've driven her at least a little bit nuts."
Trying to keep him from bringing a dragon into Torensten. Him being gone half the time while she manned the homefront and coming back with some crazy story almost everytime. Mis-speaking at every turn because he lacked wording or tact and setting her off like a landmine. That whole thing where he botched trying to handle "date etiquette" and giving Celes entirely the wrong idea. He was fully aware he was far from easy to deal with.
But then again. She had her own quirks too. They were both a bit hard to handle in their own respective way. Suppose that was part of how they got along.
Well, as Caius invited her to walk along the docks, Terra would get to answering one terrably nagging question. "Esperkin", or Esper. He had never heard of that. Celes had mentioned a Kefka. Looks like genocide ran in the family for crazy people no matter what world they came from. Ardyn, Kuja, Sephiroth. Now Kefka. Hopefully that one would never wind up in their world.
He did know what "blighted hellscape" meant, however. Celes had detailed that part. But Terra got into things that Celes hadn't mentioned. Celes only seemed to know as far as when the calamity first happened. Anything past that...
So her Returners had been victorious. At least in the timeline that Terra came from. Perhaps that would give Celes some measure of peace. He would definitely need to ensure she knew. But it appeared that the magicks of this world had spared Terra the loss of magic that came with it, and made her stronger than before. Which seemed to explain the mess she had now been detailing with in terms of power overload that she couldn't control.
It was certainly a lot. And it was clear the lot of them had been through the ringer.
"Guess I'm not the only one who survived world-ending events" Caius spoke with a small smile. "The Celes I know didn't mention the parts where the Returners were actually victorious. I think she would be happy to hear that."
