“All friends have moments where they fight. It is only natural after all. It is how we react that makes us friends with someone else.” Terra spoke as she could not help but reiterate something that she had to keep telling herself. She had to keep doing this while she had to spend so much time alone. Everything she did she needed to do in order to be good to her friends and not a danger to them or anyone else that they might have become friends with. It was with a breath she could not help but realize that silence had grown between them after she finished speaking about everything. Yet as she was about to continue she would hear Caius speak up and add in his two cents worth to the conversation.
Hearing him mention that it seemed that he was not the only one to survive in a blighted hellscape made her turn her gaze from the ocean and toward the man with a soft smile on her face. Seeing his own smile on his face made Terra hesitant to speak up at the moment. Yet it was that Celes did not mention that they were successful and made her stop her steps as she turned toward the ocean and looked out at it.
”Then this is the same Celes that I stood in front of Kefka alongside and shielded from his Searing Gaze of Fire. Yet it still feels like it is the same woman, but your words make it feel as if she is her just from the time of the destruction of the world. We were all broken by that Caius. Each of us had to overcome things…” The words would slowly escape her lips and draw out til they started to fade upon the wind as it swirled around her. Looking at the water and the crashing waves she continued after a minute.
”After the destruction I found myself washed up to a village in the farthest reaches of our world. The adults of the town helped nurse me to health and then the day I was to leave I watched them… I watched them all shield the children asa Magical Blaze came from the skies and killed all of them in front of their children. Kefka used his power as a god to kill all the parents of that town and leave the children to suffer and die. Thankfully, he did not know I was there. I wound up becoming the mother figure to all of those children. I stood up to every beast that came to destroy the town. I stood and yet found myself anchored there by self doubt that overwhelmed me. It was not until Celes arrived with our friends Sabin and Setzer that with their lives in danger by a beast named Phunbaba that I snapped from the stupor and rejoined the path to defeat Kefka. Ever since that day I have always wanted to repay Celes from her determination she showed me. She made me become this better version of myself by her sheer will. I will do what I can to help her now, Caius. No matter the mission that you and the Dragonblades will have for me. Ask and I will do it.”
She finished speaking Terra would turn back and look back at Caius. ”Enough about my own apocalyptic world. I want to know about your world and those that you held close to your heart. As you must have stories of your own that inspire and are were you draw your own strength from.” As she finished speaking she walked over beside Caius once more matching him stride for stride.

The Dragonblades
"Well, I certainly hope you're as forgiving about words misplaced as she is then" Caius joked with a small laugh when Terra claimed that friends fight as naturally as breathing. It is how they react that makes them friends. Interesting. Well, Celes didn't seem to hate him yet. Not as far as he knew, anyway. Just had taken a very, very, very long vacation. But considering Caius had spent the first few years of their business relationship as the one primarily on mission abroad, it seemed that the blonde icebrand was simply making up the time.
Terra appeared quick to accept that this Celes was different from the one that she had seen an entire second journey through. Which was good. That sort of thing was something you had to learn to accept around here. Caius had dealt with and needed to accept much more than that. At least Terra still had those bonds from a time past, while Caius did not. But he had done his best not to dwell on that fact, even if it hurt sometimes.
Terra talked a great deal about what Celes had done for her, and how Celes had been the deciding factor in getting the band together to take out Kefka. Yeah, that sounded like her alright. That was definitely the Celes he knew. As gallant, headstrong and confident on the field as could be. Though perhaps a touch less confident outside of it. Something Caius had grown to learn in their time together.
Caius' voice softened however, when Terra asked of his own world. "There isn't much to talk about there. My world was a ruin from when I was a child. I grew up alone, unable to trust, unable to open up. Even after we took our world back from the darkness, there wasn't much of a world left to rebuild. And the damage to my own capabilities to roster relations with people was... Well, it seemed well beyond repair" Caius admitted quietly. "But it's funny that you talk of what Celes means, and what she's done for you. When she too, was the one to set me on the path to make it right."
Caius looked out towards the port, watching as wood made way for a vast ocean that seemed to go on endlessly. Until meeting people like Celes, Caius hadn't cared for sights like these in a very long time. "I was... Difficult. More than I am now. I cared only for the mission, and finding a purpose in this world that would bring me to my next mission. I kept myself far and away, only interacting with people through tavern stories when I was looking for work. Keeping them at arms length. But there was something to Celes that made me want to at least... Try, to speak beyond the bare necessities. I wasn't any good at it. Offended her more than once. But she stuck with me despite, through thick and thin, even through strife that went far beyond supporting a temporary ally or business partner. And to my surprise she was open to the idea of forming the Dragonblades. At first, I wished to form it out of a desire for purpose, bringing work to people displaced from their worlds who only knew battle as she and I did. But in my time spent with Celes, and the people that began to flock to us... I began to see them as something else. A family. A family I would not have if not for she and I finding ourselves in this world and finding one another in turn."
He managed a small smile at that. "Those that I hold dear and close to my heart are here. They are from whence I draw my strength."

"Forgiving of misspoken words? I think I can be but I am not to sure. I am not to sure though..." Terra could not help herself but speak up and respond to him. There is a chance that she had dealt with misspoken words in teh past especially with King Edgar. Yet she did not want to say it for certain one way or another. Rubbing the side of her head she could not help but feel a little bad about not being able to give him a straight answer.
Yet after all of that she was quiet for a bit. More because she had to wait to see what Caius would say to everything else that she had said. It was not long after though that he began to speak. Hearing about Caius's world made her internally frown. As it sadly seems that destruction widespread across worlds seem to be a common thing. That thought was still depressive to her psyche. Yet there had to be some worlds where things turned out well after the adventures ended.
Turning her gaze to match his looking out over the ocean as he continued to speak. Listening to him speak about his early adventures and how it seemed that Celes had put him on the right path. Her smile returned to her face wide as before. She just listened to his entire story word for word as he shared it with her. Terra could not help herself as she just listened in and nodded along understanding the story. Hearing about how the Dragonblades were first starting created for him to find a purpose and then it turned into a family. This made sense to her and she could not help but understand this sentiment.
"My friends started off quite similar to the Dragonblades. United in but only a singular purpose and then we became more through our travels. We became.. well in my own mind we became a family by the end of it. My closest and dearest friends. The few people that I would push myself to the breaking point and would give my life for. So we are similar Sir Caius. I take my strength from those memories that I carry. To see their faces once more..." Terra could not help herself as she spoke on all of his words. They were similar people it seemed except it seemed that she had a few extra things about her. Yet with it all she only seemed to enjoy being around this man and wanting to be in the place alongside Celes.
Terra reached over and placed a hand onto his shoulder and lightly patted him on the same shoulder. "So we are to work together to make this world a better place? Especially if we cannot return home. Make this world a better place to live and maybe find a family to live alongside?" She let her words hang in the ether around them as she felt that was the right thing to do in the moment.

The Dragonblades
Terra didn't really understand the situation in regards to misspoken words, which was fine. It was an attempt at humor anyway. An ill-fated one, at that. Caius laughed a bit when he realized how fruitless the endeavor probably was. "Don't worry about it. Let's just say... Ten years of living in a world of ruin doesn't lend much to one's social capability. Nor use of language. And attempting to tell Celes that I care for her has been... Difficult."
Difficult was one way to put it. Caius wouldn't be terribly surprised if his verbal blundering was half the reason Celes had gone on her now-six month working vacation. Though it felt like they had finally begun to come to an understanding when she had left, so Caius wasn't a hundred percent sure either. However, Celes had promised she would return, so he probably hadn't blundered his words beyond repair.
He had faith in her, either way. She had done much for him, and he wouldn't forget that. There wouldn't be a Dragonblades without Celes. Caius listened as Terra talked about how the Returners had been, going from a group with mutual interests and goals, to a group of friends. A family, not too different from the Dragonblades. She was... Very sincere, was the impression he got. She was simple and honest. It made her very likeable in his eyes. But it was clear she missed her friends. He was surprised she had been able to hold herself from Celes for this long, given their history. It must have been hard, but if she was telling the truth then she had placed a great burden on herself in order to protect those she cared for.
In a way, it reinforced his thoughts about how he felt for Celes and Yuna. When Terra spoke of what she would do for them, it did not come off the same way Caius had heard people refer to their romantic partners. Instead, it came off more as how he'd heard brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers speak of their own families. Would he do the same for them, and for the other Dragonblades? Place that burden on himself to protect them, if it was the only way?
Yes. Yes, he would. In a heartbeat.
He felt Terra's hand on his shoulder, and quirked a brow curiously. Intimacy was still very new to Caius, but he did recognize the motion. It was meant to be a form of condolement. Had he truly painted himself as pitiful enough to merit her sympathy? It was a little embarrassing. But the thought was sweet, nonetheless.
"That's the plan. Obviously I need Celes' blessing, but if you speak the truth I doubt she wouldn't give it" Caius responded with a small smile then. "Once we're settled, I look forward to working with you. To make this world a better place for all. Speaking of places, do you have a place to stay, Terra?"

“Celes has always been someone who appreciates things being said to her face to face and without any subtlety. Well at least the Celes I traveled with was that way. If.. everyone is pulled from different eras and timetables I do not know what they would of experienced or not.” Terra sighed as she rubbed the side of her head as she thought about what she had said in response to Caius’s words. She took in a deep breath as she just wanted to speak out her heart toward Celes but with her not here in the here and now had made this into something of an awkward position. As all the pent up words and emotions had to be put back away into a bottle and held onto for later.
Terra could not help but feel that the words about the Returneres had gotten to Caius. As it seemed to give the man some pause. This pause was not a bad thing in the least. It did seem that her hand on his shoulder also had had a good reaction as he did not shrug it off instantly nor did he quickly shy away from it. Yet even with it she could not help but feel a little awkward. ”I was told that this was a gesture to… show someone sincerity and that what I said I was serious about. Or did I do this wrong?”
With her words spoken she recalled her hand and took a few steps ahead of Caius. Stopping as Caius spoke once more. Taking in the moment and the words she raised a finger to her chin. “Not in Torenstein. The place I had was… well in the depths of the Metaia Forest. It was nothing more than a two room shack I made from some busted wagons I found. So… outside of that I had a single night in an inn here in town. Was going to try and find a place to earn some gil. Ran out of what I had a while back.”
She nervously chuckled as she looked at herself as outside of her weapon and headwear there was no indication that she was not hurting in any manner for funds. So her trip here was something of a double edged sword. “One of the reasons I wanted to find Celes… To see if she knew anyone that I could do some good for. You know do something good earn a meal and a roof over my head type of thing? And well you are a blessing.”

The Dragonblades
Caius couldn't help but laugh when Terra said Celes preferred being told to her face these things. "I probably would have been better off if I didn't" Caius admitted sheepishly at that. "I'm not good with words. Especially words of the heart. Err, platonic words of the heart I mean. I'm still learning to vocalize the difference."
Terra brought up her gesture, the hand on his shoulder. It sounded like she knew as little about these motions as he did, however. Caius sighed at that. "No, you did nothing wrong. I am just... Not used to shows of condolement, nor affection. I do not know how to properly give, nor receive. Odds are I am in the same boat as you for that" he expressed, trying to at least ensure she didn't think she had done something wrong. He was thankful she had tried to help, for what it was worth.
She didn't really have a place to go. Just a shack a long ways from here that she'd made out of a busted wagon. Celes would kill him if she found out he let her go back to that shack.
"I understand. I'll pay for lodgings for you until I can hear back from Celes. Is that acceptable for you?" he inquired, then. He'd use his own funds, he'd front the risk for the possibility she could be a threat. Caius didn't use a lot of his funds at a time anyway, so he wasn't too fussed. He did not live lavishly, and he was okay with that. "In the meanwhile there is a bulletin board here. Freelance jobs and all that. That could be a good place to start in getting on your feet" Caius suggested then. "Once I hear back from Celes we can work on sorting you into some Dragonblades jobs as they come."

His platonic words being misconstrued did strike a cord with Terra. It was something that she still struggled with. It was so difficult for her to remember everything taught to her from Edgar and Locke while she was in the Forest living off the land. Yet with that she still would continue to work on herself. Even if she had no idea how to interact with too many people. Her thoughts trailed off as he spoke about not being used to showing motions of compassion. When he mentioned that there is a chance that he was in the same boat as her she could not help but nod and speak.
”Possibly… I know that for the longest of times I could not understand any motion toward me. Celes and the other REturneers helped me get over that and to teach me. Though I think.. One of the men who tried to teach me was only teaching me so that he could try and seduce me. Or at least that is what Celes said when we talked.” Her words came out slowly and with purpose as she walked alongside him. Stopping her stride as he spoke about paying for her place to stay. She nodded and it was obvious that she was happy about this as her eyes widened and she smiled widely toward him.
“That would be the best thing… Definitely better than staying in that shack in the woods as I have been… Thank you Caius for the hospitality. And bulletin boards? Ok that is a place to start I understand. I guess it is better than standing around waiting on a monster to attack or something like my last trip here…” Terra could not help but ramble out her words as her excitement was showing through her words. For her this was a genuine gesture of kindness and she was going to make the most of it. She took a few steps in front of him and took in a few deep breaths and gave a small spin as she looked up at the sky.

The Dragonblades
With each passing day, Caius learned just a bit more about this world, its cultures and social cues. But he wasn’t learning as fast as he would like. And he was acutely aware that he had fumbled his words with Celes time and time again. What impression he may have given her, he had no idea and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to know. But it was just going to have to be something he would continue to work on over time. This world had given him a second chance to rebuild what had been lost, live the life he never had. So all he could do? Is continue to try.
Terra claimed that according to Celes, one of their compatriots had tried to teach her in order to “seduce” her. “Seduce?” Caius echoed at that. Seduce, seduce, he knew that word… The meaning was just on the tip of his tongue. It was a more advanced variation of flirtation, right? He remembered something about that in a book he had read. Though he’d never seen it for himself, as far as he knew…
Caius in fact, had. He just didn’t notice because the offender was a bandit in disguise and their act was very sus. Well that, and it’s Caius. Distracted or not, he wouldn’t have noticed. Celes however, did notice. She just didn’t say anything. She was rather pouty at the time about something, though Caius didn’t notice that either. The sussing had taken top priority.
Terra was fairly thrilled that Caius had decided to foot the bill to ensure she was sorted until Celes could get back to him, and he was happy to help. He just hoped she got back to him soon. Considering the last letter had taken ages to get there, it may be that Caius would have to take a trip to Provo himself to get it done.
“Yeah. Suppose today isn’t too terrable.”
It had to be done.
“Why don’t I show you to the Wyvern’s Rest in the meanwhile, get you acquainted?”
Post by Terra Branford on Apr 2, 2023 18:13:53 GMT -6
It had seemed that her words had sparked something in Caius’s memory. Yet with that recognition it seemed that it slipped away just as fast. As if he had placed it away so that he could dwell on it or think on it later. Even with this her excitement to finally be reuniting with her friend was evident on her face and in her demeanor. Hearing him speak about how today has not been too bad she nodded.
”I mean you did not get attacked by a seagull. Yet outside of that one I c an say that today has been good. Especially with meeting you.” Terra spoke as she walked alongside him. As it was something that she was enjoying as the walk was relaxing to her. As he spoke up and that he was inviting her to the Wyvern’s Rest
”I would be honored to be guided to the Wyvern’s Rest. It gives me time to get myself settled in and back into the swing of city life before Celes arrives back in town. I cannot wait to actually get down and meet her and get the air between us clear once more…” Her words slipping out as she looked up at the blue sky. It was as if a fresh breath of air came across her and now things were now in her favor. This favor was something that she was not going to look down at. Taking a few moments she took in many deep long breaths as she just enjoyed the moment that they were within.
Terra lowered her head as she turned to look at Caius and she gave him a gentle smile. "Lead the way Sir Caius."

The Dragonblades
Caius had asked it as a question, both for clarification and out of disbelief that someone from their party had openly tried to seduce her. He was curious for context, though he also wasn't sure if he actually wanted to know. Perhaps it was best she ignored this, as he knew that some things were just better unsaid. Terra then agreed to head to the Wyvern's Rest, to which Caius nodded at that. "Off we go, then. I will ensure Celes is notified as soon as possible once we arrive" he promised her then as they got moving. If she was as important to Celes' past as it seemed, odds were that Celes would come running as soon as possible.
In time, they would come to a cozy, two story building with a small courtyard attached to the back.
The Wyvern's Rest.
It was a bit small. The first floor was just a single large room with walls separating the different parts of it. The entryway was mainly just a desk with a young woman minding it. The next was a lounge, complete with a fireplace, chairs, and a place to grab food and drink. There were places that led to where one could use facilities, store equipment and cook, but they were still adjacent. Upstairs though, led to many different small rooms. All for housing the mercenaries who stayed here, as well as a few bathrooms.
"Here we are, The Wyvern's Rest. It's no five star hotel, but to many of us, it's home."
As the two stepped in, mercenaries would suddenly stand at attention and salute when they came by. "Sir!" shouted some of them, and Caius would gingerly salute in return. He still wasn't quite used to that, and Terra would likely be able to tell by the sheepishness of his expression, even if he tried his best to hide it. At the front desk was a young woman of eastern features, who peered behind Caius to get a good look at Terra.
"Welcome back, Mr. Caius. Have you brought a new recruit?" inquired the women then, though her face brightened as she looked Terra up and down. "Your hair is amazing!" she chirped at that, but cleared her throat when she remembered that Caius was here. Caius smirked faintly, but quickly got to business. "This is Terra, a friend of General Chere. She intends to join our number once Celes gives us the go-ahead" Caius explained quickly. "Terra, this is Tomoe. She'll be able to answer any questions you might have if I am not around."
Tomoe however, can't help a snort at that. "He says that, but lately he's been here all the time whenever he's not off on a job. Miss Chere started working out of Provo, and he's hardly given me any time to work by myself while he tries to cover for her" she couldn't help a joke at that. "He's not really that different from Miss Chere. Probably the two biggest workaholics I've ever seen."
