The Dragonblades
Caius had just gone back to Torensten in order to handle paperwork for their time in Provo, and to continue helping Torensten rebuild after the Kraken attack when he had first met and recruited Cassandra. Torensten was more than a little bit used to being attacked, but the Kraken was far more devastating than anything that had hit it since the dragons had descended from the skies and laid waste to the city all those years ago. But now Torensten was starting to see something resembling normalcy again, at least until the next time it was attacked. Celes had confessed to needing a break in order to find herself and her... Center, so to speak. While it was uncler just what was driving her, Caius was happy to help in what ways he could in order to ensure things would be in order so Celes could take her break and find her happiness. Training an intern when it came to the paperwork, Caius had found himself staying in Torensten most of the time, only taking small trips to Provo here and there for work. Since then, Caius had helped with the paperwork best he could while training Tomoe, finding out the hard way that Celes had... Well, a natural talent for management, to say the least. It took the both of them combined to get anywhere near the amount of work that Celes had been doing on her own.
So he had done his best. Training Tomoe to help ease the load, and had sent a letter suggesting that perhaps a second should be brought in if they were to get back to a regular workload while allowing Celes and Caius more flexibility to leave for work and otherwise as needed. But this wasn't the only thing Caius had found himself dealing with in the time since. Two young upstarts had joined the guild, named Nick and Yuffie. Nick was woefully inexperienced, while Yuffie was... Well, a well-intentioned headache and a problem just waiting to happen, to say the least. His facial hair had only just started to grow back!
Then there was Maria. Celes' doppelganger. That had been... Interesting, and he knew he was likely going to have to keep an eye on her until Celes returned to try and preserve the General's good name. Once she came back, he was sure she would figure out a more permanent way to handle that, but for now, that was his job.
And of course, one couldn't forget the headaches of apparently adopting a sixteen year old girl who had made it her life's mission to get you set up with someone.
Then there were the reports he was getting about the Original Sin. They were small notes, little things, but they all seemed interconnected... They were corresponding for something. But what? He wasn't sure, though it made him feel uneasy. Between this and taking over Celes' job to train the recruits, Caius had been busy to say the least. Despite it all though, he did his best to keep in touch with the members he had recruited as of late. One such being miss Cassandra, who had been busy since being recruited. Wanting to show his appreciation and to learn a bit more about the newer member, he had decided to take advantage of his being around Torensten more to actually try and invite her out to coffee at a little local place he had stumbled on. It was quiet, which was good for the introverted mercenary. And it'd give them plenty of chance to catch up.
Having given her coordinates to meet with him at the stated time, Caius had arrived a bit early to get them a place to sit. The mercenary wore a simple blue dress shirt, buttoned up and collared nicely. While this was a casual thing, he did think it was polite to at least try and dress a little bit nicely.

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] It had been some time since she had set foot within Torensten, and Cassandra could feel guilt gnaw at her for ignoring her duties to the Dragonblades. Her time had been spent getting accustomed to living with Hades now, which had gone more easily than she had anticipated. There was a shadowed reminisce of the daily motions she had learned when living in his home. Memories that often came to her at the oddest of moments or within her dreams. What did it mean? Cassandra had an inkling of what it could be because she did remember what the shade of Hythlodaeus had told her so long ago and then back upon the moon as well. Shades and specters of a life that was not quite her own, but she could feel it beginning to bleed into her present now. What was she to do about it? Who could she even share her musings with? Alexander was certainly the last person she could converse about this with, and she did not know how Hades would react to her suspicions. If he would even wish to in the first place. [break][break]
There were more pressing matters to worry about, though! It had been awhile since she had met with Caius, and the opportunity to catch up over lunch would be a beneficial one. (Along with pressing through her irrational fear of being poisoned again.) No one here even truly knew about her existence, which meant it was very unlikely anyone would make the attempt to do so! At least, Cassandra was attempting to reassure herself with such platitudes. For now, her blue eyes caught sight of the sign of the quaint coffee shop she had been invited to. There were very few people nearby, nor could she see many from the vantage point of the front window to the shop. The kindness Caius had put into picking this place was not lost on her in the least. [break][break]
A white sundress had been her outfit of choice along with a sweater over it to keep her somewhat warm. Cold weather did not bother her as it did many others. After her journey to Garlemald, Cassandra doubted any amount of cold weather could shock her system anymore. Even Ishgard had not been as cold as the city of magitek had been! Making her way into the shop, she noticed the familiar form of Caius already seated at a table for the two of them. Smiling to herself, she walked over before slipping into the free seat. "It has been awhile since our last meeting, no? How have you fared as of late, Caius?"

The Dragonblades
Caius had been informed of Cassandra's needing to get some things settled before she could dedicate fully to the Dragonblades, and he had already given the okay for that. They were not a servitude, per se. They were a family. Celes was currently on vacation right now, so Caius had no reason to see issue with Cassandra taking her time to settle in. He was happy to see her around now, though. He hoped she had been able to settle her business. He always had the mantra that happy mercenaries worked their best. So it was a win/win for all of them.
The mercenary smiled softly when he caught sight of Cassandra, though he chuckled slightly at the sight of the sweater over the sundress. While the end of the year was always a bit colder, that didn't make much difference in Torensten. She was probably going to be boiling before long. Still, she would slide into her seat and asked as to his welfare.
"I would wager better than you're going to be in a few minutes with a sweater on" Caius quipped cheekily in greeting. "Though maybe you'll be fortunate and it'll cool down enough to not cook you alive."
Sass aside, he still was clearly happy to see her as the smile never left his face. "I've been... Busy. Celes has taken a much-deserved vacation, and I have decided to remain in and around Torensten for the most part in order to train our new reception staff as well as take over some of Celes' duties. I am not used to staying in one place for long, so it's been interesting I suppose" Caius obliged her question then. "What of you? Have you settled in alright? You have been gone for some time, as you have mentioned."

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Roasting alive? Cassandra felt her lips quirk into a secret smile at that comment. No, she doubted she would be roasting any time soon. The heat in Torensten did little to compare to the deserts of Ala Mhigo or even Thanalan. At least the land here was by the sea, which gave it a nice breeze quite a bit of the time. "I assure you, the weather here will do little to affect me," she stated with amusement. Besides, as a Black Mage, she could quite easily cool herself off with the right ice spells. With a flourish of her hand, small dustings of ice crystals littered her palm as she shot Caius a more cheeky grin. There was a definite perk to being able to wield the magicks of both fire and ice and this counted for one of those perks, no? [break][break]
Leaning back in her chair, Cassandra considered his words with a mild trace of guilt within her eyes. She had not realized how much work had fallen onto Caius's shoulders in her absence. Her presence within the company had not been too long, but she wished she had been able to aid him more. There had been her own personal matters to take care of, though. As welcoming as the Dragonblades had been, she enjoyed the knowledge she had a more private roof over her head in regards to staying with Hades when she was not needed here. Cassandra had her own private matters that needed to be solved, and her former enemy held the answers she needed. And, well, he was certainly easier to live with than Alexander had ever been. [break][break]
"There were personal matters I needed to resolve. Ties to my past that I knew resided here that I wished to seek out before dedicating more of my time to the Dragonblades," she answered. How much of the truth was she willing to give? Hades had already told her he had given Zenos a name to seek out: Caius Dragelion. The man before her deserved to know he may have a potential target on his back with an enemy all too familiar to her. "There is something you should know--there is a person from my past that may seek you out. His name is Zenos yae Galvus and he can easily be recognized as a tall, strongly built man with long, blond hair and a third eye upon his forehead. If you do cross paths with him, I would advise caution and to escape his presence as quickly as you can. His strength is greater than most and I have held difficulty in the past defeating him." [break][break]
Cassandra folded her hands into her lap as a small sigh escaped her. Oh, she could still slap Hades for sending Zenos out wild and untamed with a name for the unhinged man to battle. Luckily, she had heard little else of her former enemy's presence and she hoped it would stay that way. "Granted, I have heard little else of him, so he may longer be here." Even her past enjoyed haunting her across different stars. Her lips soon quirked into another smile as she attempted to lift the mood with more entertaining news, "I do hope the Dragonblades do not mind another presence with me--he takes up very little space, I assure you." In a flash of golden light, her mentor's former familiar appeared at her side. Bright, blue eyes and the softest golden fur any being would ever come across! Argos sat upon his haunches in all his regal glory as he looked at Cassandra with affection before his attention turned to Caius. It instantly became one of indifference as he viewed the stranger before him. [break][break]
A giggle escaped her as she recalled how unimpressed Argos was with strangers that had yet to earn his respect.

The Dragonblades
Caius' expression softened as she assured him that she would be fine. "I only wish to see you safe. Also comfortable. If you are sure that you will be alright, I will respect your judgement and not intrude further. This time, at least" he remarked, managing the smallest of cheeky smiles as he decided to let Cassandra's judgement stand for this one. He would hope that she knew her own limits, but then again, most warriors didn't. He knew he didn't most of the time. But it was what it was. Even if it would likely be him nursing her back to health if she wound up getting sick because she overestimated her own resistance to cold.
Speaking of cold, she would bring what she thought to be cold, hard truth upon a being called Zenos from her world. Caius didn't seem surprised though, perhaps to her own. How she came upon information on this though, was something he was quite interested in. "I am aware. He showed up at the Rest and sought to torture all he could in order to get a rise out of me and draw me into a fight. Torched villages while he waited for me after I agreed to meet at a select location. I killed him in the ensuing duel."
That in of itself was likely also a surprise. He was almost nonchalant about it, as if crazy people showing up and starting fights was normal to him. Mostly because it was. Caius shrugged, then. "Or at least, I think I did. He disappeared after I struck a decisive blow, and I have not heard tell of him since. Wasn't hard to tell that he's not someone who can keep themselves hidden for long. If I was to guess, the fates decided to send him back to your world upon his demise here."
And thus had likely saved him, as being sent to Zephon had saved Caius. Ironic, really.
"I am interested though, in how you came upon this information. If someone is sending these crazies after my head, I will need to deal with the source before they put my comrades in further danger" he brought up, though the topic shifted for a moment as she brought out her dog. Caius' expression brightened at the sight of them. "Of course we don't mind. Your companion is beautiful, Cassandra" he spoke softly as the mercenary would slowly hold out a hand to the pup. They were clearly stoic at the sight of him, so he took it slowly. His hand stopped at a certain point, allowing the dog to come to him if they wished.

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Cassandra could only stare at Caius in shocked silence as he spoke of his encounter with Zenos. A chill settled at the base of her spine at the knowledge that Caius had been able to kill Zenos when battling with the monstrous man had nearly killed her more than once. It was not that she did not believe her superior, but she could not deny a sense of bitterness that settled within her stomach. It was an unbecoming reaction from her. It was a relief to know that Caius had survived the encounter and had even bested one of the most trying of her foes. The duality of emotions never did cease to amaze her, and she had to remind herself there was no shame in the emotions she now felt. "Forgive my silence. It is simply out of surprise that you did encounter him and defeated him as well. He was a constant source of chaos and destruction within my star, and I regret that he was able to continue delivering such methods here." [break][break]
There would always be those stronger than herself after all. Cassandra knew that and would take this as yet another reason to continue bettering herself for the next fight she found herself in. Each foe she had set herself against caused her to push past what she believed her limits to be. This would be no different than all of her past encounters. "When I last met with him in my world, he was left for dead after our ensuing duel. Zenos was often known for defeating death itself, though. I pray he remains beyond reach for both Zephon and for Etheirys." Cassandra had no wish to encounter the Garlean prince ever again in her current life or in another. The man lived only for the thrill of a battle that would set his soul aflame and she simply did not--no matter how much he believed that she did. [break][break]
"Since you have already encountered Zenos, then I would not be surprised if you already knew the source of my information," Cassandra admitted with a sigh. As much as she wished to keep from mentioning Hades in this instance, she could not find it in her to lie on his behalf. Caius deserved to know the truth of who had given his name out, and Cassandra felt the keen need to also protect Hades from his own machinations. Well, from his own flippant ways, anyway. "Upon my star, he was known as Emet-Selch, but he goes by the name of Solus on Zephon now." Briefly, she cast a glance to Argos as Caius reached a hand out to the rather large canine. For a small moment, she almost believed her familiar would reach out his nose towards the outstretched hand, but Argos simply turned his head to the side with what seemed like contempt. A rich, amused laugh escaped her at the reaction. No, her familiar really did have his standards set high for those he deemed worthy of his attention. [break][break]
"Do not dismay, Caius, for Argos has always been like this. It was quite an ordeal for me to earn his respect and affections when we first met." Well, the second time they met for them both, the specifics of time travel were still quite unknown to her. Cassandra reached out her own hand to run her fingers through Argos's fur as the familiar leaned his head into the affectionate gesture. "As for Solus, it is with him that my business was with--is still with. He is not someone that goes out of his to wreak havoc as Zenos did, but I will not lie that he can be someone with his own machinations that can be seen as detrimental. I do not believe he has any reason to cause harm to anyone on Zephon unless as a means of self-defense, though."

The Dragonblades
Cassandra seemed surprised that Caius had managed to at least defeat this Zenos. There even appeared to be some bitterness, though she insisted it wasn’t that she didn’t believe him. She claims that this Zenos had caused a great deal of pain in her world as well, and it was good that he had at the least been banished from this one for the time being. “As do I. The people here suffer enough. They do not deserve another who only seeks to harm” Caius answered. “I do not begrudge you, either. Some still don’t believe me over my encounters with the Kraken and Lich. I should probably be offended. Am I that non-threatening looking?” he at least managed to find some measure of cheek in all of this.
Though Caius would let out a long sigh when she revealed the identity of the troublemaker. “I suppose I should have known” Caius remarked, burrowing a hand against his temple. “We have met as well. Showed up at a murder scene of a lord who had a crystal, never did confirm the killer but Emet absconded with the body and the crystal. So he’s not exactly in my good books.”
He made a face at that. “He also made scathing, besmirching remarks about me. Made horrible claims about my collecting people, or… Something of the sort. I am deeply offended about this, I swear” Caius spoke with an amused tone, the smile that followed showing that no, he was not actually offended or cared about those words in any way, shape or form.
The dog didn’t seem to like him, and Caius frowned in disappointment. Still, it didn’t surprise him much. “I understand. Respect is earned, as it should be. Though I’m curious about if it can be bought” he brought up, fishing a dog treat from his pocket. “I keep some for the local dogs during my walks.”
She claimed that Emet had no intentions of causing harm, but Caius gave her a look that indicated he had been given reason enough to think otherwise. But she may well be biased, he realized, if the two had history.
“A lesson I have learned on Zephon is that not everyone can be as they seem. Trusting the wrong person is how you wind up dead. So I ask you to please be careful, though I’m sure you know. I’ve been given reason to doubt he would truly not cause someone harm if it would benefit him. I recommend watching your drinks. More than usual, I mean.”

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Oh, had she been that obvious with her emotions? Cassandra felt chagrined at being read so easily, especially when she did not personally hold any bitterness towards Caius. Some emotions could not be helped no matter how well-intentioned the individual may be. Zenos had been a thorn in her side for years, and she could not help the negative emotions that swelled within her heart when Caius explained he had bested the man within their first encounter. "Forgive me, it is not that I doubt your strength. You would need to hold a staggering amount to run a company such as this and still be able to lead from the frontlines," she placated with a bow of her head. "But Zenos was an adversary I encountered many times that nearly always lead to some sort of injury upon my person and those around me. It is enough to know he is no longer a threat at present." [break][break]
A murder scene? Visible displeasure marred Cassandra's expression at that sudden revelation. No, she did not believe Hades had been the cause of such a situation, but she would not put it past him to take advantage if it served his own ends. "I cannot say that such an admittance surprises me, but I do not believe him to be the cause of a murder. He will set out to serve his own ends if it suits him, but Emet-Selch does not resort to such methods on a mere whim." She was certain of that much down to her very soul. The topic of which she still had to broach with the man when she next met with him. Memories were beginning to plague both her waking hours and in her sleeping world as well. Cassandra was by no means a fool--and she knew of the connection between the two. She simply needed to know the full weight of what such a thing meant to the both of them. [break][break]
Argos was not a canine to be bought by such paltry offerings! Especially when said familiar was quite used to a higher standard of cooking due to Cassandra. Her lips curled into an apologetic smile as Caius would find himself once more rebuffed by the rather contemptuous canine. Another turn of the head delivered the answer to the question of whether such ordinary treats would be enough to win him over. Cassandra bowed her head as the topic soon returned to Hades as she thought over his warming. It was a statement meant in earnest and she could not begrudge him such a sentiment. Hades was a being even she would be hard pressed to fight against without the overwhelming amount of light aether ripping apart her very soul. [break][break]
"I will keep your words close to heart as I hope you do mine. Emet-Selch is a powerful man that should not be easily disregarded no matter my thoughts on the matter." Cassandra could only hope this current predicament she found herself in would not press her into a corner. The young woman was quite tired of finding herself in such situations enough for several lifetimes.

The Dragonblades
"Then I am lucky to be alive" Caius answered with Cassandra expressed that she had been injured everytime she had encountered the man. "He was savage and cruel, uncaring of who they hurt in their pursuit of battle. I do not doubt that you were injured. The battle wasn't exactly easy for me, either" he at least tried to somewhat massage her wounded pride. "It took a great deal of planning and a different approach from my norm to take him. From the moment he appeared and challenged me, I did everything I could to hide my abilities. I needed to ambush him in every way that I could, as I could tell right away that he was a being of great power. Every attack was calculated, and that wasn't easy. I was nearly felled several times before I could get in a definitive blow."
He didn't know if that helped at all. He hoped that giving some idea of what it took would ease her confidence. The mercenary cocked his head. “That’s if he even died. He disappeared, no corpse. It may very well be that the gods decided to favor me, and nothing more.”
Cassandra insisted that while Emet was crafty and self-serving, he was not malicious and would not go out of his way to harm others. “Someone like that doesn’t need much to rationalize attacking people if it furthers their ends" Caius reasoned at that. He shrugged when Argos still didn't accept his offer of treatos. It seems he would have to bring a special blend next time. "But I suppose we will have to see. If he becomes a threat, this world’s governments may very well look to us in order to stop him. While I do not personally hope for his becoming a threat, I hope that if it does, I can count on having you by my side.”
In which he meant he hoped that she was right about Emet. He had no desire for an unnecessary conflict. But if it came to it, he hoped that Cassandra would be able to see things as they were and protect those who could not protect themselves. Deciding to change the subject though, he remembered something he had meant to discuss with her. Though before he could right away, a staff member would arrive asking for their orders. Once they were taken, Caius would broach the subject.
"Perhaps I have requested more than enough boon of you by asking for you to be at my side should the worst come, but I might as well ask if you will indulge me. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, after all" Caius brought up. "I have recently been given... Reason, to try and improve my culinary capabilities beyond mere campfire cooking. But I am not well-versed in operating the machinery, nor in adapting the cookbook to the actual dish. I do not wish to disappoint this particular 'reason', and was wondering if you would be able to teach me about cooking sometime?"
