"Honestly? I get the impression it's not mischief this time around. Outside of mischief, Claire is actually a very nice girl. She's probably just worried about us." Sarah admits with a faint smile. The idea of her junior being worried about her was amusing and embarrassing. "I should broaden my horizons, I've largely anchored myself to the orphanage. Now that they're getting a proper home and their needs will be met, I suppose it's time I think about getting a job." networking would be the modern term used, whereby she could make more contacts and make her way into Zephon proper.
Mostly, she'd like to make Torensten her home but she did desire to visit other areas with an organized group in the future. "Who better than a night to help a damsel in distress?" not that Sarah looked remotely in distress but everyone needed help, especially when they were new in town.
Sarah had to cover her mouth, stifling laughter before choosing to eat instead. Caius expression about his moral compass in relation to love. Quite expressive this knight but it certainly made clear to her, how dire his circumstances were. In fact, she looked thoughtful once she got the laughter out of her system. She was beginning to speculate that Claire may be largely helping Caius out. She did talk about him a fair bit, there was a good respect, like an older brother. An older brother who lacked...social experience, in this particular area. Contrasting Caius, Sarah lacked connections and experience.
The tornado thrower certainly proved to be... something special. Honestly, Sarah would likely inquire more but they had some time, so she'd pace herself. As their conversation continued, she was surprised by the related question but she perked up. "This I can answer~!" she remarks excitedly.
"It's always different in terms of the timing but how you know is largely the same. During your many dates, there will come a time, typically during the date, perhaps right at the end, that the feeling of love blossoms. Both parties will know that they want to keep seeing each other but exclusively. I would say, for some ladies, they don't want to share the person they're dating for awhile because they've become attached to them."

"I know" Caius admitted softly at that with a small chuckle. "She's great, she really is. And I know it's likely she has some good intention in all of this. Even if I'm not too sure what it is. That, and being skeptical has kept me alive." That was an understatement, of course. But he did trust Claire in this, for all the crap he gave her over putting him on a date. He listened as Sarah talked about potentially broadening her horizons, now that they were getting a proper home. "Are they?" Caius inquired curiously, his expression brightening up immediately as he recalled the kids he'd met when he first arrived. While they seemed happy, he knew they would be happier with real families. "I'm so happy to hear that. I know how much of a difference getting to grow up with a family can make, even if I'm sure you've done your best and they clearly love you dearly."
Of course, there would always be kids in need of a place to go. Especially when Zephon was so dangerous. Having been orphaned by the Starscourge, Caius knew the impact of this very well. Though he thought a moment about it when she talked about getting a job. "While maintaining an orphanage is a wonderful thing to do, I think branching out would be good for you. Might help out the orphanage if they need it, too. Even if I'm sure the kids will miss having you around" he brought up at that. He pondered what Sarah could possibly do for a job, then. "The bulletin boards are a fantastic start for freelancers. I don't suppose you have any magic experience? Torensten is filled with jobs for mages, even non-combatants."
She claimed that there was none better to help a "damsel in distress", albeit jokingly, and Caius made a face at that before laughing. "If you asked Claire, I think she would call me the damsel when it comes to dating" he couldn't help the joke. The expressions didn't end as he told his story, and he could tell that Sarah was getting a kick out of this. Then he asked his own question and she actually had an answer of sorts.
"I see. Though I'm not sure what you mean by not wanting to share the person they're dating for awhile, doesn't exclusivity come when there is mutual agreement to a partnership?" Caius inquired at that with a curious eye, though still making the point he was trying to make prior. He did, however, make a note of what she had said about when love blossoms. "Though as for why I equated friendship and dating. Wouldn't the logic of when the time comes, be the same for making friends? You just know, right? When that line is crossed?"
He hadn't really thought about it until now, but for those he had met, he had just made friends of them without really getting into it. It had just happened. So then, was love really the same?
Also, why was the word dating used both for people who are just going on dates, and for an exclusive partnership? Talk about confusing.

Sarah was pleased when Caius admitted he knew about Claire's way of thought, her character; in essence. His concerns did come from a place that kept him alive, this she could tell. On the other hand, she'd been taught to have a very discerning eye, on a broader scale given the nature of her heritage. She'd also gained a lot of experience with people, those of Cornelia and now, those in Torensten.
"The younger ones, in time. We've been working out deals for adoption. It's been hard, given the attacks on the city but there are broken homes in need of little ones to mend the future. The new orphanage is more for those within Claire's age range, younger and older. They've apprenticed with those around the city, some are students at the University, they've all managed to find their own paths. Just need a 'home' until they become self-sufficient adults." Sarah explains and the joy in her eyes, as well as the pride she has in them.
"As for missing me, well...I'd still come 'home' and see them no matter where I work, so long as it's within Torensten." though she does consider if a job could take her away from the city for the long term, instead of brief visits. There is a much wider world she hasn't had the opportunity to see yet, which leaves her pensive. The mention of the bulletin boards leaves her intrigued, though first she answers the question about experience.
"I have some experience with magic, mostly through magic crystals. I would not consider myself a full fledged Mage, the way Claire oft boasts of herself." a faint giggle at Claire's antics is given there after before she continues. "I'll have to check out these bulletin boards then. Would you happen to have any recommendations based on what you've seen or heard?"
With much to think about, leaving a sense of excitement in the air, the conversation continues and she listens to Caius reply to her jest. It made her laugh before she added, "I'm starting to agree with her. Well, it's not a bad thing, it does have the benefit of being a 'catch', as the men would say. Nor would Claire let you encounter women with ill-intentions for you." this much she was certain about now and could understand a preliminary assessment.
On the matter of dating and friendship, what caused a change in status, Sarah took the time to listen and consider her explanation. She could see where the two were similar, that moment where an acquaintance became a friend, whilst a friend became a lover; there were many similarities.
"You are correct regarding exclusivity, so I'll try to explain what I meant in the context of friendship, if you don't mind?" she admits, waiting for a confirmation before she continues. "Have you ever had a friend who you just spent more time with than anyone else? Perhaps to the detriment of your other friendships and acquaintances? It would be something like that. You haven't gone exclusive with one another but the desire to spend time is so strong, that she would want to have your attention at all times. That kind of exclusivity."

Working out deals? So she meant they hadn’t been officially adopted yet? Or that’s how it sounded anyway. Caius at least hoped they would get adopted and while he was sure that she’d miss those who were adopted out, it was good to get them back into loving families as they should be. Had Caius been actually taken in and adopted himself, how different would his life have turned out? It was a bitter thought, however. And one that would be fleeting as he quickly pushed that aside. He had been the one to avoid civilization unless necessary. He couldn’t trust another human being with his life like that. Even if it had meant he would have never been happy the way he was. Not that he’d have been adopted anyway, there just wasn’t the people or resources for that. At best he might have gotten a few scraps on the street. Which was probably still better than faking his age to the hunter’s association, but it was as it was.
Sarah of course said she’d be sure to visit them whenever she could, which didn’t surprise Caius. “Perhaps I can as well. Depending on how they take to me if I visit the orphanage again” Caius brought up, because this was definitely the best time to talk about the fact he had been considering visiting the orphanage again to entertain the kids. She asked then if he knew any recommendations. Caius had to think about that one for a few moments, chewing food in thought. Swallowing of course before speaking. “There’s a bit of everything there. Sometimes it’s just elderly people needing someone willing to deliver them supplies from across town on the regular because Torensten is too large for them to walk on the constant. Others it’s security detail, monster hunting, finding ingredients for something, helping with construction or reconstruction, helping to power something crystal-based for a period, plenty of things” he rattled off one by one. He hadn’t forgotten that she mentioned she knew how to use some magic, however. That was definitely interesting. “What do you mean by crystal experience?” he inquired curiously then, as she had mentioned the crystals. The crystals had to be charged by mana to be used. What sort of magic did Sarah have?
“A catch?” Caius asked at the next statement, clearly unaware of what the word meant in this context. Oh boy, she was going to learn quite quickly how much of a rookie he was in all of this. Though she didn’t seem to think that was a bad thing, which was a nice change.
Sarah elaborated on what she meant in terms of wanting to spend more time with someone than others, to the point they take up all their time. “That sounds like how it’s been with Claire and Serah these days” he had to admit with a small laugh. “I seem to be spending a fair amount of time with them lately.”
Though in terms of romantic love, he wasn’t sure if he quite understood how it worked in that context. If someone was attached to the point they wanted to only date that person, wouldn’t that be the point that they decide they want to pursue a romantic partnership? Actually, maybe he should ask…
“I suppose for friendship, that would make sense. Though for romance. If you reach that point of desiring someone’s attention, wouldn’t that count as the threshold between just dating and wanting a proper court-ship… Partnership-thing?”

"I think you've already become a favourite, it's rare for people to drop by so often. A consistent face does wonders, especially for the younger ones. Just be sure to come soon, so that you get to see them before they join their new families." that inadvertently would provide the clarity concerning the state of their adoptions. It was merely administrative work, which needed to be handled with Torensten at large. For two things were certain in life, Death and Taxes.
A wonder how she'd fare when she had to handle her own finances without being apart of a royal family? Given the jobs Caius mentioned, her head nearly spun. Though some of the examples did suit her quite well. "I never thought I'd get to experience the Adventurers life. Helping the elderly with simple jobs would be a good way to get around Torensten and see more. Powering crystals is easy too, I quite enjoy using them. Torensten has quite a variety too!" Sarah considered herself privileged to be able to experience some of the different types. It reminded her that life wasn't about what someone knew but who they knew.
When he asked about Crystal experience, especially now that she mentioned powering them, naturally she'd have to demonstrate! Placing her utensils down, she held out her left palm before sparkles of blue and green light encircled her open palm, revealing a crystal. "This one can store items. It helps because I do the shopping for the orphanage sometime. There's no way I could carry all that by myself. Thanks to this, I don't have to~" she explains and taking a moment to back up her chair, she manifests her Lute as proof.
Strumming its strings for a bit, she smiles fondly at her beloved instrument. "I mentioned the variety, I should specify the ones I use. I have this storage crystal, some single use crystals that contain a stored spell, and there's this one that's used for fun and celebrations. It produces harmless effects. I wish I could remember the name, Lumina told me..." she hummed, absentmindedly puling a string or two before giving a playful shrug. She could always ask next time, so she'd put away her Lute and pull her chair back up so she could finish eating.
To Sarah's surprise, Caius didn't know the meaning behind the colloquialism of 'Catch'. She blinked then smiled as she leaned in to playfully whisper: "A catch is an attractive individual, usually of good character too but not always..." later usage was very wanton and bawdy. Fitting for sailors no doubt but not quite the proper meaning for the term. She leaned back after and seemed to have a twinkle in her eyes.
Sarah took the time to listen and note Caius mention of spending time with the Farron family. It seemed they had made a big and positive impact in his life. The same was true for her, even if the sisters were slightly different in each equation thus far. There was time for them to meet the sister they were missing in the days to come. She would nod in agreement that he was getting the gist of things, albeit in a platonic way.
"Courtship~" Sarah corrected teasingly but she was excited by his conclusion. "You do have the gist of it but it's a bit more complicated in practice. For example, when I was making an example of what a female partner might do as a sign. That doesn't mean her dating partner feels the same as she does. It does take a few dates for some before they would desire to be exclusive. Other times, love just...hits them or it can hit one partner but not manifest fully in the other. Situations like that require patience and continued courtship, before the relationship can move into exclusivity. I would recommend constant communication and being direct in order to make things work. If you feel certain feelings for someone you're dating, you should tell them. Chances are they might be feeling the same way. Shyness does tend to get in the way after all." Sarah seemed to be a wellspring of information about this subject and was too happy, daresay excited about to help!

Already become a favorite, she claimed? After that one, short visit? Well, if anyone would know, it was Sarah. She did however, warn him to show up soon if he was to catch them before they went to their new homes. He nodded in affirmative at that. "Understood. Tomorrow it is. I will make some time" he promised then. He was also to visit Lumina that day, so perhaps he should do that during a slow period in the work day. He didn't tend to leave the Rest during those times, but he figured Tomoe would probably appreciate having some time to herself.
He listened as she considered her options, then cited what would work for her. Helping the elderly seemed like a no brainer for her, considering she already enjoyed taking care of children. And it seemed she knew how to use magic as well, enough to work with the magic crystals properly. Though Caius couldn't help a small laugh when she revealed the crystal that functioned much like his own glaive, watching the lute materialize before their eyes. "I never thought the abilities of my own king would be replicated by little crystals such as these" Caius had to admit to that. "Though considering the source of the Power of Kings is our crystal... Perhaps it is not so far-fetched after all."
Though he was surprised to hear what a catch was... Considering she had insinuate he was one. Caius was clearly taken off-guard as he processed that information, chewing the inside of his life as he scratched his head sheepishly. "I... See" he managed out at that. He was definitely not used to being called something like that, so he clearly didn't quite know how to take that. He did however, manage to play it off with a joke. "So the word would connotate to being kind of like catch-ing a good fish?"
Was that a pun? It may very well have been a pun. A bad pun, but one nonetheless. She also corrected him on his pronunciation. Again. "Courship" he attempted once more, getting a bit closer this time. But still found himself with no dice on that one. Still, he seemed to have the gist of things, though not completely. Story of his life, really. Her example reminded him of that whole... Thing, with Celes. When he truly believed he was in love with her, and not in a platonic, familial sort of way. She did not feel the same way. So apparently, it was possible that could have changed with further time spent together, but even if it did, it might take time before there was a mutual desire to be exclusive. Of course, Caius knew from experience that sometimes, it was clear that two people just didn't have that romantic connection and never would. That seemed to be the way of love. So this did help him connect a few dots on that matter when combined with his own disastrous experiences.
She also recommended constant communication. And that if you hold feelings... Tell them. That did not change his mind on his plan not to tell Celes, however. Considering how she acted just with a mistaken impression based off poor date etiquette, it was good he didn't say anything prior to figuring out what his feelings really were. Still, it was something to keep in mind if there ever came a time that he felt that way, and it seemed like the right time.
That is, if he could ever figure out what that feeling was.
"So it can just hit, just like that?" Caius mused aloud. "It seems like there is no set way to love, not exactly anyway. It seems to be different for everyone."
Hopefully he'd remember this late-given information in the other thread. As for this one, the food was done in, the drinks were empty and it was beginning to get fairly dark. It wasn't long before the bill came due, mostly because they were closing soon.

Sarah was quite happy that Caius would be coming by tomorrow, that made for a successful date in her eyes. Since it meant there would be some follow up. The kids were going to be thrilled by that especially, as they didn't get repeat visitors often enough. Especially ones they took a liking to so easily. Giving him a nod to acknowledge the agreement, as their conversation flowed to a different topic. At the mention of Caius' world having a crystal, she seemed surprised. Though at the same time, it seemed how the Crystal worked was different and that left her wondering.
"If our crystal worked by bloodline, maybe I would have had the power to do more..." she admits, feeling a bit disheartened. Of course, given her memories were a mess, she was finding it easier to recollect older thoughts that were long since lived. What was difficult were thoughts that should be more current. As if large swaths of her life just before her arrival in this world, were gone or distorted. That wa why she needed to see more, do more and try to establish herself as an individual. With some luck, she might just regain her memories and make sense of the visions she'd been seeing that didn't make sense.
In this moment, what did make sense apart from her newfound determination, was that Caius did catch the gist of the expression. "Exactly~ Though any more than that, is a bit bawdy." this made her laugh, as it was so easy to recall people wanting to shield her ears from such humour. Thankfully, when people were more relaxed, so too were their tongues. Sarah could understand the need for certain boundaries and that how she was treated was by and large due to her lineage. She just preferred them to not be too constraining. Being her happiest amongst the people, meant she wanted to feel a part of something bigger, rather than above it. Being on a date then, was rather refreshing yet something was nagging at her.
"I suppose that leaves you with a lesson for tomorrow. Mastering the art of courtship." well the pronunciation at least. She'd certainly provided much for Caius to reflect upon. Which meant she could finish her meal proper as their evening was coming to an end. She took a moment to look about as the patron count dwindled. Once the bill came in, Sarah was done and looked quite content. A wonderful way to conclude the evening, which meant she should impart on Caius some final advice about the topic of love.
"Just like that and yes, it is different for everyone but somehow, those who have experienced it, can tell when it's happening to those who are inexperienced. Should a time come where you have even an inkling of that feeling, let me know. Talking about it, even if it's hard to verbalize; helps to find the answer." at least, that's what she'd been told though it was hazy as to whether she understood with more first hand experience or not.
No doubt the foreshadowing to another chapter but till then, the night would come to a close~
