Thinking of you, wherever you are I've returned from memories past, reborn anew
⚡
Some days later once Caius gave the heads up to being free, the first of two dates was about to begin. As written on Claire's notes, he'd be meeting up with one of his dates in the Residential District at the Orphanage that Claire mentioned. She had intentionally left out any details that would hint as to who the mystery date was. Furthermore, of the two, this was the one she really pressed for. Whomever 'Big Sis' was, she must have left quite the impression on the young Claire.
Mog put in his own effort, so even he held this mystery date in high regard too. He showed up promptly, wearing a miniature moogle sized tux. He'd knock on the door, awaiting Caius in order to escort him there. "Ready for the big day, kupo?" he didn't mean to add any pressure, just had to make sure the socially awkward mercenary was in the right frame of mind for this. Especially as his taskmaster partner, wanted to make sure this went perfectly. Reaching for a handkerchief, he'd gently pad his temple as he was a bit nervous.
For the journey itself, they'd taken a few back alley streets in order to reach their destination. The building itself looked a bit run down and sensing the potentially negative first impression it might cause, Mog spoke up. "The actual date won't take place at the orphanage. You can take her out wherever you'd like, kupo." the thought then occurred to the moogle, if Caius even had that kind of budget? Dapping his head with the handkerchief, he'd decide to trust in the man's good judgement.
...Failing that, he'd trust in her judgement if all else failed. She was quite a charismatic lady and helped make everyone around her feel at ease.
Upon arriving at the entrance, an old lady greeted them. She was in good spirits and dressed modestly but not in a ragged fashion. In fact, given her attire, it was a wonder she was running an orphanage in this old building at all. Inside seemed quaint but there were stone masons working inside, indicating some reconstruction was in the works. Suspiciously, none of the kids were present as he moved through the different hallways, being led to the back of the building.
"One last thing, you should do a check to make sure you're ready before you open the door, kupo! Mrs. Wendelworth and I will be out here for now, kupo."

The Dragonblades
Sweet merciful Astrals above, wherever they may be back in his home world. What in blazes had he agreed to?
Well, "agreed" wasn't exactly the word he would use here. Coerced? Pressured? Badgered? Bamboozled? Regardless, he was on a date. An actual date. Without the Voyage de Torensten flair or anything, just a teenager with too much time on her hands somehow setting this up for reasons presently beyond his understanding or comprehension. He had brought this up in passing to her sister, but he was pretty sure by the fit of giggles that followed, that Serah was in on this entire escapade and wholeheartedly supported the teenager's making it her life's mission to "hook him up" as the kids today called it.
Why? He still didn't know. And he probably never would. And he was still convinced it was Claire herself who was going to show up in either one of these, or both. Today with a fake mustache and a wig or something, or in the other just straight up pretending she hadn't swapped with Lumina. Which was a whole other can of worms by itself to think about.
The fact is, this whole thing was pure chaos.
But believe it or not, Caius had actually abided by Claire's instructions. He didn't know why he had, to be honest he just thought it would make her happy, and a bit of time off couldn't hurt too bad... Right? Celes was taking her vacation, and while Caius didn't really feel like taking one of his own, or any real extended time off for that matter, an evening to himself to meet a potential ally couldn't be the worst thing in the world for him to do.
So there he stood. Clean-shaven, long hair tied back into a braid, and wearing an entire suit. Looking as awkward as could be. What would Celes think if she saw this?
She'd laugh. She would definitely laugh.
Yuna?
Laugh. Probably even harder.
He was probably not getting any help or support on this one. So he was just going to have to deal. Caius opened the door to the Rest to find a moogle in a tuxedo waiting for him.
"Mog, I wasn't aware you were the one going out on a date. Good for you."
Was he really going to be escorted to a simple meeting by a moogle in a tux? He didn't even like the time he had been given a royal escort to the ceremony, and that was a different story altogether. But he'd play along. The Moogle led him to a run-down looking orphanage, and he frowned looking at it. The kids were being raised here? He almost didn't hear Mog expressing that the date wasn't here because the thought perturbed him so much.
But the inside was a ghost zone, and the place seemed like it was under construction almost. It was old and weird and creepy, and Caius didn't like it. Where were the kids? He couldn't even hear the creaking of beds indicating they had gone to bed. As they reached the back of the building, Caius couldn't help his gut instinct as he brought a hand to his back. He was prepared to summon his sword if it came to it. If it actually was a person? Well, he had already thought of that. They would just have to see.
"Yeah. I'm ready" he spoke softly, taking a deep breath in turn. Alright fates, just this once. Let's not have a monster blow up Torensten this evening please?

Regarding Mog's response to the quip of being the one on the date. At first the moogle seemed a bit confused, before his red pom shot upwards and a chuckle came forth.
"I'm just your entourage, I have to look as good as the man on the date, kupo." a sly response indeed~
Fortunately for Torensten and Caius, there would be no disaster this evening. What awaited beyond those doors was a small group of children, a surprisingly equal amount of boys and girls, sitting along sets of plush pillows in a circular pattern. Boys on the left, girls on the right, encircling a single figure. A young woman was sat upon a rather comfortable chair. Her attire did not look as if she was part of this establishment in the least. She was surprisingly immaculate, garbed in a lovely headdress that was two toned. One part a proper white, the other part tinted sage green. The veil that flowed down, cascaded with the platinum blonde wavy hair to her lower back. At the centre piece of the headdress was a decorative emblem, sporting horns with ruby beads accentuating it.
Soft hazel eyes were once downcast to focus upon the children, soon gazed upwards to the door. A soft gasp of surprise, likely muffled out by the sound of the children's cheers. "Big Sis' date is here, yay~" to which, by the time Caius was properly inside; the little rascals were up on their feet and running towards the mercenary. Ready to crowd him, just as they gathered around the figure prior.
"You're very handsome, mister~ Do you work for the guards? Are you a Knight?!" one girl asked, she looked about twelve, with dark red hair, tied into pigtails and freckles across her face. None of the children's garb was shabby, despite the buildings looks. Their clothes were clean and seemingly of high quality but not in comparison to the young woman they had gathered around prior.
"Children, please. I'm sorry about this, they insisted on seeing you. You're Caius, I presume?" slowly the young lady stood up from her chair. The sage green gown she wore flowed gracefully with her movements as she slowly approached. The children moved to the side, to allow her to come closer.
"My name is Sarah, pleasure to make your acquaintance at last. Claire has told me a lot about you." she offered him a proper curtsey, even if it wasn't necessary.

The Dragonblades
The door opened and Caius would soon hear the pitter patter of little feet. The mercenary's held breath would be let out in a sigh of relief as he could see the kids behind the door, sitting in a circle. Ok, so he was not about to see some kind of horror film scene. That... Was definitely good. He kept his hand behind his back though, and blue sparks would erupt behind his back subtly. Had he drawn his blade after all? For what reason could it be?
A young woman in a fancy-looking headdress would stand up and move to look at them, alerted by the children who had started calling her...
"Big Sis".
Oh. She was a real person.
Oh gods, she was a real person and he actually had to go through with this.
Caius took a deep breath as he was soon swarmed by children. He wasn't really sure if he was ready for that, considering he wasn't often used to interacting with children in the first place. Much of his travel was solitary and until recently, he had scarcely stayed in the same place for very long. So his encounters with children in this context were very limited. Still, he did his best to smile - albeit sheepishly so.
"The uh... Dragon... Blades, actually" the mercenary stammered out when one of the kids would speak up, doing his best to stifle his nerves as his eyes stayed on the young woman who approached. How in the world did Claire even know this woman? She was certainly striking, both in face and in garb, he could definitely say. Caius wasn't one to be frozen to the spot in awe of someone's looks, but he could still appreciate things that were in front of him. But there was an almost regal air to her, too. And it was obvious when she would curtsey. She was an off-worlder, wasn't she? Nobility, maybe even royalty. He knew the air too well. King Noctis may have been the least royal-acting King of all time, but he still carried the vibe that made it clear right away.
The mercenary would bow his head slightly to match her curtsey. "The pleasure is mine, Sarah" he greeted in turn as he would show his hand. What he had been hiding was not a blade, but a bouquet of flowers that he would promptly hand to the young lady. "I had them enchanted with a small water crystal. Will keep them from wilting."
When it had been explained that this person was working at an orphanage, he had picked it out specifically in hopes of prettying up the orphanage a little bit. While he hadn't expected it to look as it did, he figured something that the kids could look at would be the best thing here. And these kinds of crystals weren't hard to find considering the struggles of dealing with Torensten's heat.

"Oh, I've heard of them, thank you for your hard work, sir~" how nice to have a fan, except it was looking like more than one fan, as just hearing the name had sparked curiosity among many. Some of the older ones did seem to hear about the Dragonblades all the same. What really turned the entire group into fans, was the reveal of the bouquet of flowers. The girls swooned and the boys rolled their eyes a bit. Sarah was quite surprised, offering a warm smile as she accepted them in kind.
"Thank you, Caius." she began, "The crystals here are different from back home. It's hard to imagine them being so plentiful." she'd admit before the boisterous children spoke up, strangely in unison, "So, does this mean you two are going to leave for now? We didn't get to hear one last song from Big Sis..."
Sarah didn't seem to mind, as if this always happened at the prospect of her leaving for just a short while. Ordinarily, Claire was here, so she could in fact do that with some distraction. Today was different and she turned to look to Caius with a slightly apologetic look. "I'll leave this decision to you, Caius. I tend to spoil them sometimes." It was hard not to, given the puppy dog eyes all directed at Caius now. To think Claire had not only found an orphanage but volunteered here, choosing to do something good in lieu of an awful prank.
"You should take a picture before you go, for good luck and to remember our time here." the redhead spoke up, clearly caught up in the whole romantic affair of this. The murmurings that came forth after this was proposed seem to come to a concession. A quick glance around the room then, revealed it was cozy and there were some sparse comforts. Much better than outside the room and certainly better than taking a picture of the outside of the building.
Sarah meanwhile crouched down so that the girls could take a look at the flowers up close. An environment like this suited Sarah, even if her regal air had been noted. Zephon had a way of...amplifying certain traits and suppressing or making other traits more humble.

The Dragonblades
Apparently they had fans, which only made Caius even more sheepish. He nodded slightly to acknowledge the attention even if he didn’t know how to respond to it. He hadn’t exactly known how to back when he was put on a podium either. This was just not his wheelhouse. But at least they seemed happy about the flowers. Sarah was calm and serene, but seemed grateful all the same.
Geez, he was gonna get the names mixed up. Sarah, Serah. Was Claire trying to tell him something here?
Sarah talked for a moment about how her crystals were different at home. “Aye, mine as well” he spoke up, though decided to ask for more information on that when they were alone. But the kids weren’t done yet. Apparently, she had promised them a song. Soon enough, puppy dog eyes were on Caius and the mercenary shrugged in turn as he cocked his head towards Sarah. “Proceed.”
He would move to lean against the wall by the arm as she took care of it. He didn’t mind the wait for the kids’ sakes. One suggested getting the picture taken. He only shrugged, letting Sarah make the decision there.
“Only if Sarah is fine with it. Her comfort is important” he tried to do his best to be respectful in turn. He wasn’t terribly familiar with Torensten’s cameras personally but he was sure they knew how to work them.

It seemed like there was a moment of shared curiosity that was reserved for later. One where they could speak about crystals in their respective worlds. First, there was a budding fan club that put Claire's own antics in this event to shame. Maybe the kids had rubbed off on Claire even but whatever the case, they were quite enthusiastic. "This is the children's last day here but it's not a sad day. They're moving to a much bigger building, in a nicer part of Torensten. This is thanks to Claire's twin sister, she is very mature for her age. You can actually tell the difference between them if you're looking." Sarah stated, unable to help rambling just a bit.
"Let's take the picture first, then I'll play a song." Sarah announced but was soon followed up with the door opening. There was Mog and Mrs. Wendelworth, seemingly right on time.
"After which, you'll all make sure to pack up the last of your things, without delay." Mrs. Wendelworth spoke, with much more authority on the matter. The collective 'Awwwwww' seemed to be buffeted as she approached Caius for a moment. "I do appreciate you entertaining the whims of the little ones, even for a moment but don't let them keep you for too long." she'd note in a softer voice, far less stern. Dare say, even she was excited about all this, judging by her knowing chuckle.
She gathered the kids towards the door, so that they'd be able to leave promptly. Mog then if Caius looked over to him, had a camera between his hands. Sarah would gesture Caius come over to the wall opposite of the door, as there was a simple painting of Torensten hung up, along with some choice furnishings. She would hold up the flowers inbetween them and Mog would take the picture in kind. There was a brief chime, as if something struck ice or a crystal. The flash of this camera wasn't blinding like normal, there was a gentle light, magical in nature and it was quick enough to not disorient.
With the commemoration marked, Sarah looked to Caius and made a fun inquiry, "You wouldn't happen to know any local songs, Caius? I've picked up quite a few but I haven't been in Torensten very long. I've been having fun memorising them and adapting it to my lute."[b/] just the mention of the instrument caused a young lad to rush over to the other side of the room and fetch the lute for Sarah. "Thank you very much, Peter." standing with her lute, she looked at Caius expectantly, though it was fine if he wasn't familiar. She merely thought it'd be fun to do part of this activity together.

The Dragonblades
So the construction happening was because the orphanage was being repurposed and the children moved to a bigger building, thanks to this mysterious Lumina. Claire had mentioned her, and some of the things she had done. But it seemed that this businesswoman continued to have an effect on the people around her. Including these children. Between the two that Claire had wanted him to meet, it seemed that she had chosen two very charitable souls. She did know how to pick them.
She rambled but he didn’t seem to mind. He did the same thing often enough. So came time to take the photo. Well, if Sarah wanted this specifically, he supposed that made him feel a little better around it. The older lady, who he was glad was there to watch the kids while Sarah was gone, though, wanted them to put themselves first a little bit once they had finished entertaining the kids. “It’s ok, I really don’t mind entertaining them until Sarah is ready to go” Caius promised with a gentle smile. He understood if for Sarah, the kids came first.
They were set up for the photo, and Sarah seemed quite prepared for this. Was the photo her idea all along? Because she had steps prepared more than Claire had, was this a condition for getting her on board? Curious. Caius abided by her instructions and got into position, gently placing an arm on her shoulder as he managed a sheepish smile at the camera thing. He knew what cameras were from back home, and knew there was a Torensten equivalent. But he had never actually seen it before or knew just how it worked.
With the picture taken, the song was next. Surprisingly, Sarah admitted that she hadn’t been in Torensten long and didn’t know much for local songs. Curious, where had she come from? Questions for later.
“I’m not much of a singer. But I know a song or two from my travels” he admitted, biting his lip. He sang by himself sometimes on the road. But around other people? Never.
It was for the kids, he told himself. For the kids. So he cleared his throat and bit the bullet.
Something lighthearted maybe? Or close enough. What appealed to kids anyway?
“With a froggish grin, Wielding Eldr’hrym. The great Lord Hremit, Took ‘em out on a whim. With a hop and a skip, The Fiends were lit. They were doomed to be licked, By Lord Hremit’s wit.”

Mrs. Wendelworth was quite pleased to hear and see, Caius patience and kindness. She chuckled lowly but shook her head all the same. For while the gesture was sweet, they wanted to get Sarah out into the world, expand her horizons. That in truth was really what this was all about, a plan in which several parties came together. "Worry not, young man~ My husband and I have this all sorted."
This same party, the 'culprits', planned the photo and thus, Claire's fingerprints were all over this too. Sarah then just went along with it because it'd make the kids happy and it seemed fun. Which in fact, was all it was meant to be. However, photos had an aftereffect in that they were meant to be shared. In that regards, it was only a matter of time before some key people in Caius' life would see this photo. Alas, a tale for another time.
Letting the first few verses of the song commence, Sarah had gained an idea of the kind of song this was. In turn, she began to play on her lute estimating the tempo as it was sung. The kids chimed in, singing in tandem and it was quite a fun song indeed. All fun things did come to an end, of course. For Mrs. Wendelworth was quite serious about her instructions for the matter. There was much to do and Mr. Wendelworth would be coming by with a large carriage. Before they left, the kids did clap and cheer before being ushered to run along. Life seemed to cool as the room became empty, mostly. Mog was around floating in a corner, easily overlooked.
"You must have frequented a lot of taverns~?" Sarah mused aloud once there was some peace. She then revealed a purple magic crystal connected to a small chain. "This has to be my favourite crystal so far, have a look." it faintly glowed in her left hand as she carefully took the bouquet from her side and moved it close. With a flash of dim light, the bouquet vanished; leaving the crystal to take on a red aura before fading to normal.
"This one's a storage crystal, it's so nice to be able to take my lute with me without being incumbered." she explained before allowing the lute in her lap to be stored away next. "I'd love to see the other kinds but they're quite expensive."

The Dragonblades
Caius was definitely going to regret trying to make Claire happy. But the picture was innocent enough, probably. At worst might garner a few laughs as Caius told the story of the teenager who had decided to try and set him up, and the orphanage children that he had tried to entertain.
He supposed singing wasn’t too bad, it was just to entertain some kids and he was able to adapt his storytelling confidence to it. The kids appeared to have a great time and were happy, so he had no regrets about that. But eventually, they did have to get going.
He had been in the middle of telling the kids a story about the recent encounter between himself, Claire’s sister, and a King Behemoth when the kids were ushered out to give them some space. Did… They mention something about a carriage? Looks like the kids were being moved out already. Promising to visit and tell the rest, he bid them farewell.
Once they were alone, Sarah inquired about taverns of all things. “I’ve seen a few, aye” Caius responded in kind. “I can think of a few that would be nice to visit for an evening. I tend to prefer the quieter ones” he offered then. Well, they did have to decide where to go after all. It was there that Sarah would reveal the storage capabilities of her crystal when the bouquet suddenly disappeared. “Fascinating” Caius mused aloud. “It works similarly to my own magic” he remarked as the lute went next. “It’s definitely useful when not everything you wear has deep enough pockets.”
Seriously, couldn’t someone develop fancy pants with pockets? And why were the suit jackets’s pockets fake? Why even have fake pockets?
“I don’t carry any crystals on me, unfortunately, or I’d show you” Caius admitted sheepishly. “We should probably get going, but I’ve been meaning to ask. Where are you from, exactly?”
