Talk of taverns had distracted her mind from earlier thoughts regarding Caius' tale. She was as captivated as the kids had been, though not as disappointed when it was disrupted. She could always ask for more details later after all. Instead, Sarah was intrigued that Caius knew Claire's actual Big Sister. The one she insisted on calling little Big sister, specifically. Sarah had not been introduced as of yet, though it was only a matter of availability.
"I've been a bit sheltered in truth. It'd be nice to visit a tavern, preferably a quiet one." Sarah confessed, though she left out 'without armed escort' from her statement. The last thing she wanted was to give a poor impression of herself, by means of her royal background. Here in Zephon, so far away from home, she was just an ordinary woman. The humbling thought, coupled with helping the children had given this new life, meaning.
Caius remarks about the magic crystal working similar to his own magic, caught Sarah's attention. She mentally noted that Caius seemed to be well rounded then. Only to stifle her giggle at the mention of pockets. "I haven't gotten to wear outfits that have pockets very often myself but you're right. They're never deep enough. I once asked a tailor as to why that is, he told me that the extra material to make the pockets larger wasn't worth it. That he only did so on special order." who could say if that was the same for others, be it in Zephon or otherwise.
"You're quite sweet, I'm sure the opportunity to see more of them will come, eventually." Sarah insisted as she composed herself. It was time for them to get going after all. So when questioned about where she was from, she smiled before reply, "From another world." not that she'd leave him with such a vague response for long, it was just fun to captivate his attention as she made her way to the door. "My home was known as Cornelia, a wonderful Kingdom, not too different from Torensten. Please don't hesitate to ask me for more details, we can talk on the way."

The Dragonblades
She didn't come off as the type that wasn't very worldly. Then again, Caius was worldly and still more sheltered than most people. So that wasn't exactly the criteria either. Still, a quiet tavern seemed like a good place for a date, he supposed. There was the one that he and Celes had visited to take a night off and drink in peace, he remembered. Small, out of the way, had good food and drink and wasn't too well known so as to be crowded all the time. It was why Caius had begun frequenting it. Though he should inquire as to what the name of the establishment was, perhaps... That would probably make it easier to find it in the massive complex of a city that was Torensten too.
Caius was stunned into silence for a moment when she would reveal that they could actually special order that kind of thing. “Ah, blast it. I should have thought of that idea when I was ordering my own” Caius lightheartedly lamented with a palm over his face. “My frame doesn’t exactly work with the suits you can find at the local tailor, I had to custom order. If I had known I could have put pockets on this sodded thing, I would have” he remarked as he, while not having too strong a reaction over it, was a mite ticked that he didn’t know he could have done that. "I guess it makes sense why it's not worth it to them, I imagine not many people who need them are used to traveling all the time and having, well... Reason to have deeper pockets."
The mercenary bowed slightly when told he was sweet, and they would head for the door just as she proclaimed being from another world. Which would be surprising and tense if he hadn't figured that out at the sight of her. But just as they stepped out, the darkening skies clouded over and became that much darker as rain soon began to fall. “I got it” Caius proclaimed as he motioned for her to stand back behind the doorframe for cover. Caius held out a hand in a purposely showy flex as a blue light radiated around his hand, sparks billowing around it as he would soon materialize…
… A fishing rod.
Caius’ brows shot up in confusion. Well, that was embarrassing. “Huh. That’s not right” Caius commented dryly as the mercenary would banish the fishing rod in a dull flash of light. There went the fun show of said magic he had just been talking about. He usually got it right too. Was it nerves? Probably nerves. That or he needed to organize his glaive a little better.
“Pocket dimensions. Always with the technical difficulties” the flustered mercenary did his best to save it with a touch of cheek. There was no flourish this time as he extended his arm again. “On the bright side. We’re well equipped if we ever decide to go fishing.”
With that, he summoned an umbrella and held it over their heads as he motioned for her to join him out the door again. He listened as she talked about this Cornelia place she was from. He led the way through the streets, keeping the umbrella over their heads as he looked for that familiar sign. "Well, I guess to start... What was life like for you in Cornelia? You do seem like the royal type" he remarked in what was meant to come off as a tease, but he did want to confirm his feeling too.

Outside of certain academia, namely of a social science slant; it was rare for the Princess to have more worldly knowledge than someone who did traverse. Yet here she was, informing the mercenary about the business side of tailoring and some industry secrets. Caius took it well and that was fine but Sarah was amused. She was also oddly happy, not for his misfortune but that she could indeed help in a meaningful way. A small step towards a greater effort, something she sought to pursue in this world; in Zephon.
Shame about the weather then, for an unexpected development came upon opening the door. When asked to step back, she did so, not wanting to ruin the only dress she had. Sarah was not really a materialistic person, despite her upbringing. Rather, it was ceremonial, if not spiritual that this outfit, tailored by the very person who educated her on the trade, was all she had from Cornelia. Along with her lute of course! Whilst she stepped back, she gazed upon Caius, awaiting his solution.
The effort was certainly a remarkable bit of showmanship but the end result was...a fishing rod. This caused mild surprise evident on her visage but there was a strange delight that followed. Fishing wasn't something she got to do personally but she did get to accompany one of her handlers to do so. He would fish and she'd play her lute, a very relaxing vista before the two of them. Of course, she was supposed to be learning something, riding perhaps? The possibility escaped her but whilst Caius attempted to recover, Sarah replied in kind. "Honestly? I'd be delighted to try my hand at fishing sometime. Ah...with better attire and maybe on a better day to start. I can't imagine fishing in the rain to be ideal for a beginner."
When the correct item was retrieved, the umbrella, she simply nodded as she moved to join him proper. While she had begun to share details the question she received after being aske to elaborate on her life, caught her by surprise. "I-is it that obvious?" she inquired and not rhetorically, she was genuinely taken aback. It made her furrow her brows for a moment, cutely mind. "Yes, I'm a Princess. These days, I try not to dwell on that. Here, I'm just an ordinary woman. It's not bad, honestly."
The transition did have some hurdles, of course. Whilst she embraced certain aspects with open arms, there were oft smaller things that one of her type could take for granted, that she missed. Some of that was small comforts but the biggest thought on her mind, was the people that made up her life. All of Cornelia's court made up her "family" as it were and being separated from them, was a loss she wasn't used to. "My life in Cornelia was very good. In some ways identical to my life now, as I'm used to having children rely on me while I play songs for them. That at least, was a natural transition. When you're taught what it means to be responsible for the livelihood of others, they become your family. Thus, I miss them deeply."
"Well, if you aren't completely put off by my mere presence by the end of this. Perhaps we can go fishing sometime? I know a few spots on the Pale Coast that the monsters don't tend to frequent. And even if they do pop up, I have a regular fishing creature companion that can ward them off easily enough" Caius offered with a gentle smile when Sarah actually seemed pleased at the prospect of potentially fishing, instead of judging him harshly for failing to first materialize the needed umbrella. Caius moved to where he could better hold the umbrella over them both, though Caius found himself getting a bit wet on the sleeves as his larger frame took up so much space and he needed to focus the umbrella more on Sarah herself to keep her from getting wet.
As he did so, she would confirm his suspicions. She was a Princess of a place called... Corneria, she called it? Well it's about time the real her showed up. Caius seemed... Well, perhaps surprised wasn't the word. He knew, but it was still hard to believe that this was the person that Claire had set him up with. What kind of people did that girl know? He had so many questions, and he didn't know where to even begin with them. He couldn't help but wonder what the Cornerian Army looked like, too. Perhaps he would ask her if given a chance?
"I wouldn't say it's obvious. But when you're a kingsglaive having it knocked into you how to behave around the King, you learn to recognize a certain air, or certain behaviors. Even if my King wasn't exactly... The same as the knocking tried to make him out to be" Caius admitted with a soft laugh. "Right, I guess in some worlds, a Kingslaive would be like... A royal knight, maybe? I'm not sure what the word is in your world, but we were a private task force that answered to the King himself, and were granted his abilities to serve his military needs."
He wiggled his fingers and the blue sparks from earlier billowed from them, as an example. It seemed right that if she was going to tell more of who she was, he should do the same in kind. Though he smiled slightly when she said that she was just an ordinary woman now. Humility, who would have thought? She really did remind him a lot of Noctis. "Suppose it's not so bad, once you get used to it" he admitted quietly in response. "And there's a lot of perks to having the freedom to dictate who you are and what you do. Even if it's lonely at first."
She talked about how the kids were a familiar thing to her, and how she had played music for them even back home. She understood the idea of responsibility, of the lives of others being in her hands.
"I suppose I know what that's like, though I've not really taken care of kids. Not until recently, anyway" Caius admitted quietly. "I did once take care of my little sister, Emily. But... That was a long time ago."

"The Pale Coast, that's quite a name, it invokes imagery when spoken." to which, Sarah was already imagining it. "I'd be delighted to join you. Given your preparation, I suspect fishing is more your element~?" after all, he did seem a bit out of water. Yet his manners and efficacy were top notch, leaving her to guess more about him.
The explanation of Kingsglaive confirmed Sarah's suspicions, leaving her to with a satisfied smile. "Yes, Cornelia has knights with a regiment that would fit your position. I can see why Claire decided to pair us together now, ah that girl..." she placed a hand to her cup her cheek, a faint blush coming forth as her expression softened.
As their conversation continued, she notes the sparks with mild awe. "I quite like the freedom, even if I haven't lost that air about me yet. I suppose one can't change over night." though she'd at least like to subdue it enough to prevent the wrong impression by this world's ruling class. As well as those who reported to them. Such attention would bring unwanted circumstances, especially to her current caretakers.
"Seems we have something in common then. I too have a younger sister. For some reason, I'm left with a deep impression that she's alright. Though I can't put my finger on why." Serah admits as they journey onwards. "Is Emily here in Zephon with you?" given some of Claire's family was with her, it wouldn't surprise her in the least.

The Dragonblades
“The sands are literally white as snow. You might not even realize it’s a beach at first” Caius remarked with a small laugh when Sarah talked about the imagery of the Pale Coast. It looked like a snowfield but without snow falling… And with water. And it being absurdly hot. Caius was still getting used to the hotter climate of Torensten despite their base having been here for years. Caius had traveled so much that he had never quite been able to acclimate fully to any environment. This whole Celes vacation thing had forced him to work to try and adapt.
Though by “vacation”, it sounded like Celes had instead taken to managing the fledgling Provo branch that Yuna had set up, that doubled as a clinic. To be honest, it wouldn’t terribly surprise Caius if she ended up remaining there. He had not told her this, of course. And he would be sad to not see her anymore whenever he returned to the Rest. But she had been at this for quite some time, and if she was happier working from there then that was a good thing. Caius would just need to adjust staffing at the Torensten branch over time to accommodate and adapt. And he could always visit, of course.
Sarah asked if fishing was more his element, and he smiled slightly at that. “I suppose it is. I fish here and there to ensure I’m never short on food stores for myself or for my animal companion. And it is a good chance to recollect myself” Caius responded, of which was Caius code for it being his way to relax. He couldn’t really rest long without feeling like he was wasting time that could be spent doing something worthwhile.
Sarah confirmed that her royal knights and kingsglaive were about a match. And pointed out that it now made sense why Claire had picked Sarah for this. A knight and a princess... He supposed by the stories he'd read, there was logic in that. He didn't look at it with the same hopeless romantic lens as Her Highness, but that was Caius. Luckily for Sarah, King Hremit didn't seem the type to care about royal mannerisms. In fact, he seemed more focused on his obsession with battle and warriors fit for the annals of history. He'd met the man, a bit of a battle nerd, that one.
But Caius' expression turned to a frown when Sarah asked about Emily. He was glad to know she thought her own sister was alive but...
"No," he spoke softly, chewing the inside of his lip. "She's been gone for a long time. Bandits took her and the rest of my family. I've been on my own since I was 13."
Gone for a long time, but that necromancer had brought her back only to kill her again when she wasn't of use. Something that had stuck with Caius for long after. The mercenary cleared his throat, then, as he noted the familiar sign. Caius opened the door for her and led her into a quaint little tavern. It was small, but very clean and cozy. Not a lot of people, which was how he liked it.

Sands as white as snow left the pale coast an apt name. Fitting her mental imagery and leaving her with anticipation for such a sight. One could only wonder what sort of fish swam near such shores. Would they be colourful or perhaps mimic a winter cadence? Questions, questions, questions!
His reply to one such, left him open to an immediate follow up by the Princess: "Animal Companion, as in a familiar or a 'mount', for lack of better term? No offence to your companion, of course." the concept of fishing for two, essentially was intriguing. There was a wholistic vibe about Caius she was forming. A rugged adventurer, living off the land, doing good wherever he went. The more she imagined it, the more Caius reminded her...of him. On the other hand, she was left with a foreboding impression at the back of her mind. That Garland, was not like Caius, even though her memories said one thing. She could see glimpses of another, a different Garland and that gave her pause.
Not wanting it to ruin the optimism of a romantic, she dismissed her recollections and tried to focus on the present. A good thing as she noted Caius frown regarding Emily. She shifted a bit so as to be attentive, ready to embrace the story that would accompany such expression. Her lips pursed thin before she gave a curt bow of her head as he opened the door for her. She'd enter first, moving to the side once she was inside to allow Caius to come through. Briefly, she looked around, to take in the atmosphere and to think upon what she was told.
Fishing was a solitary experience for most. Sure, it could be done with others but the peacefulness that it invoked, was uniquely personal. In that way, given he'd been alone since thirteen, it fit like a puzzle piece. "Thirteen is a rather dreadful number, when not associated with baking." she admits solemnly.
Briefly, Sarah wondered if Claire reminded Caius of Emily but she had enough sense to not ask. Speculating about one's circumstances, motivations and so forth, was part of her training. Ruling required such perception, a type of analysis of the people that modern day folk would ascribe to psychology.
"My condolences." Sarah adds, before changing the subject to something more amusing. "So then, how has your life changed after meeting Claire? In my experience, she is...a force, in a small package no less. Astounding doesn't do it justice..." Although she didn't want to take away from the immense kindness she possessed.

The Dragonblades
“Suppose that depends on what you mean by those terms” Caius brought up with a shrug when Sarah asked about what his companion would be identified as. “Vordun is a companion. A friend. I raised him from an egg, and it’s not often that we are separated. I ride on his back when we travel, though, yes. But “companion” really does sum him up". Though a thought occurred to him, and he couldn't help but laugh a bit at it. "Of course, when we do fish, the majority of it goes to him. He eats a lot more than I do, to say the least. Luckily Torensten isn't short of creatures that can sate such an appetite."
Said enough without explicitly saying what Vordun was. For someone that hadn't heard of him by reputation, it was better this way. She could meet Vordun when the time was right, when she knew more about him and understood that Vordun was a very gentle creature. As for Sarah, she had figured out quickly enough that his family was a sore subject. For obvious reasons. Not wanting to ruin the mood, she quickly changed the subject. A change that he was grateful for. The smile returned a moment as she asked her question. He motioned for her to wait a moment as he inquired at the counter for a table instead of sitting at the bar. The tender seemed curious at his dress and his new company, but ultimately was able to oblige the request and the two were led to a table.
"So. How has my life changed since meeting Claire? That is certainly a loaded question" Caius remarked, unable to help a laugh at the thought. "Well for starters; this is the first time I've been on a date that didn't involve my best friend dragging me into a raffle."
The mercenary tapped his fingers on the table a few moments in thought. "To be frank... I was recently put in a position where I have needed to remain in Torensten for a time, due to my co-leader's decision to see the world and find herself. I've been traveling for so long that staying in one place for this long has been daunting, to say the least. I don't know how to quite explain it, but... The presence of Claire and Serah has been a grounding one. One that has allowed me to more smoothly ease into this new state of being, as it were. If that makes sense. It's made domestic life more... Appealing, I suppose. What about you? How does a Princess wind up getting into Claire's antics?"
Post by Princess Sarah on Jan 4, 2023 12:55:29 GMT -6
At first, Sarah tilted her head. Familiar and Mount were pretty ordinary terms. When Caius elaborated, choosing to define and expand the term companion, Sarah slowly understood. Calling Vordun a mount, even if she wasn't trying to demean them, didn't do their relationship justice. It implied a lack of sentience and more importantly, sapience in their relationship. She was used to people having a good bond with their horse, a traditional mount but horses weren't as clever or emotionally intelligent. Companion then, gave a stance of equality, a partnership, in which she grasped. Leaving Sarah to nod in understanding, followed by a look of intrigue regarding Torensten's biome.
In spite of her expertise, it was relieving to see Caius smiling again after her quick thinking to change the subject. Letting Caius take the lead both in getting a table and then in speaking about their new topic of discussion, allowed her to expand on what she'd learned of Caius. The unexpected twist, that he'd so little experience dating wise and if she read into it more? Not very pleasant ones, surprised her to no end! Her expression shifted a few times, from astonished to...resisting pity, then to understanding. Said understanding was more to do with Claire's intentions.
"To answer your question, by chance. I had been taken in by the couple who run the orphanage, Claire happens to frequent said orphanage to help out. She also goes to the University with one of the children, a former resident." her statement made Sarah think about how the world could be "small" like that.
"Honestly, Claire's ability to adapt and thrive here, is astounding. I can't help but feel like she belongs in Zephon. As someone old enough to be here senior, it's a bit embarrassing. Perhaps, that's due in no small part to my upbringing. So, as to how she affects my life, I can attest to feeling grounded too. Along with another word I'd like to offer, hope." Sarah had thought about this for quite awhile through her encounters. Without the kindness of strangers, she'd be lost and likely to end up far worse off. An orphanage itself wasn't likely a setting one would think for a Princess to be. Nor for them to find their way in such, not without hope.
Sarah was filled with the hope that she could help people in this world, to treat them and love them as she did those of Cornelia. When she thought of it that way, she could accept her fate and make something of it, instead of wallow in despair. It also gave her the courage to try and piece together the strange influx of memories that was bothering her night after night.
"Oh, if it helps, I've never been on a date either. Fortunately, I'm having a lot of fun, I'd be amicable to doing this more often."

The Dragonblades
Caius had raised Vordun, cared for Vordun and fought alongside Vordun. Their relationship went beyond simply a mount or a befriended beast. They were inseparable partners. He hoped he could in time convey the full meaning behind that to Sarah, but for a first meeting she at least seemed to get the gist of it with a bit of explaining. Though she may be surprised to learn that the Dragonblades weren’t named that just to sound intimidating. As far as other dates he’s had go? Well, she’d just have to learn that as she goes, perhaps.
Caius however, was interested in where a Princess got into contact with a time traveling teenager to the point that she could just straight up call her up for a blind date on a whim. He listened with eyes focused completely on her as she explained that she had been taken in by a generous couple that owned the orphanage. Caius studied her face a moment, squinting as though he were trying to figure out her age given one would think it unusual to be taken in by an orphanage if not a child orphan yourself. However, she didn’t look much younger than he was. Just a kindly couple, then? But he was able to learn how Claire came to get to know her – through helping out at the orphanage. Random acts of kindness… Well, they did sound like Claire, that’s for sure. And there was a university link there, so it was clear how she got to this point.
Caius nodded along, indicating he understood as she continued. Though one word made him curious ever further.
“Hope?”
It echoed from his own lips just as they did hers. Caius tilted his head with a curious eye, wondering where the connection came from. “Claire’s circumstances are… Complicated. I can see how she would be adaptable, however. I don’t know how much of said circumstances are my place to say. But it is good to see she has found people that she can trust in this world. No child should be without that.”
Caius chuckled a bit when Sarah admitted she had never been on a date herself. “I suppose royalty doesn’t give you much time. Life with the Kingsglaive was much the same” Caius expressed at that. “Before this, my only experience would be my closest friend’s insistence on joining this… Blind dating event that was held here in the city. But she was shy about doing it by herself. So I was roped into it. The event matched us on common interests, and of course, I ended up matched with the very person that had me sign up in the first place. In hindsight, it made sense that common interests would put us together. We ended up establishing it as a non-romantic affair early on however and wound up just enjoying the garden. It was a nice evening, but I don’t know enough about dating to tell you if it counts or not.”
He couldn’t help a nervous laugh, however. “Of course, it didn’t get there without a little chaos, which came after I was a nervous wreck about the whole thing and gave the wrong impression. I was trying far too hard to follow… The book, I suppose you could call it? With no experience, I attempted to compensate with study material that I followed to the letter. But it turns out dating’s not quite something you can read up on. It… Was bad. I regret everything I blabbered until she stopped me.”
With some time having passed, he was at least able to laugh about it now. Sort of.
