Thinking of you, wherever you are I've returned from memories past, reborn anew

Being a student was akin to resuming or restarting her life prior. Claire was having a blast and with Mog by her side, there was much hijinks in Torensten's University of Magi. Oh sure, in Serah's classes Claire was an angel but in the other classes? The teen Faron could not resist her mischievous nature. The boys were easiest to fool, being much too stubborn to remain one upped by an outlander.
As far as grades wise, well even if Claire wasn't indulging her ego, she was doing quite well. This could be attributed to her big-little sister being a great teacher, along with her aptitude. Even Mog could get some of the credit (and he certainly wanted some), it's just her antics betrayed her studious nature. One teacher insisted Claire's mischief was a way for her to cope with not being home and the uncertainty of not being in her homeworld for the foreseeable future. Others didn't see it that way, as Claire's mood was largely positive. The smiling face of a devil in disguise. She had made quite a number of shirts too, one of which she was fond of wearing beneath her white mage cloak.
Mog and Claire had been in the midst of a scheme when she recollected that it had been awhile since they saw Mr. Caius. That she was surprised she hadn't run into him so far. She reckoned he must have been leading clean up efforts, recovering from those same efforts and even caught up in the local celebrations. Probably for the best, the entrance exams were tough, getting up to speed was tougher still, life as a student felt like routine now.
Imagine then, Claire's surprise as she inadvertently 'ran' into Caius. She was more watching Mog and her own back as it happened. For any moment there was going to be a loud 'bang' as a potion Claire concocted went off. It was a 'harmless' bang but it'd sure get quite a bit of attention. Just as she was going to turn the corner, SMACK, THUD!"Mog, warn me next time---Oh! H-hey Mr. Caius, fancy running into you...literally. Sorry about this."

The Dragonblades
Since departing from Claire and Serah last, Caius had gone back to Torensten in order to handle paperwork for their time in Provo, and to continue helping Torensten rebuild after the Kraken attack. Torensten was more than a little bit used to being attacked, but the Kraken was far more devastating than anything that had hit it since the dragons had descended from the skies and laid waste to the city all those years ago. But now Torensten was starting to see something resembling normalcy again, at least until the next time it was attacked. Celes had confessed to needing a break in order to find herself and her... Center, so to speak. While it was uncler just what was driving her, Caius was happy to help in what ways he could in order to ensure things would be in order so Celes could take her break and find her happiness. Training an intern when it came to the paperwork, Caius had found himself staying in Torensten most of the time, only taking small trips to Provo here and there for work. Since then, Caius had helped with the paperwork best he could while training Tomoe, finding out the hard way that Celes had... Well, a natural talent for management, to say the least. It took the both of them combined to get anywhere near the amount of work that Celes had been doing on her own.
So he had done his best. Training Tomoe to help ease the load, and had sent a letter suggesting that perhaps a second should be brought in if they were to get back to a regular workload while allowing Celes and Caius more flexibility to leave for work and otherwise as needed. But this wasn't the only thing Caius had found himself dealing with in the time since. Two young upstarts had joined the guild, named Nick and Yuffie. Nick was woefully inexperienced, while Yuffie was... Well, a well-intentioned headache and a problem just waiting to happen, to say the least. His facial hair had only just started to grow back!
Then there was Maria. Celes' doppelganger. That had been... Interesting, and he knew he was likely going to have to keep an eye on her until Celes returned to try and preserve the General's good name. Once she came back, he was sure she would figure out a more permanent way to handle that, but for now, that was his job.
Then there were the reports he was getting about the Original Sin. They were small notes, little things, but they all seemed interconnected... They were corresponding for something. But what?
Between this and taking over Celes' job to train the recruits, Caius had been busy to say the least. With a bit of time to himself but not enough to go and do a job or something, Caius had decided to go out for some fresh air after hours spent at the desk and training recruits when he wasn't. He was just passing by the University of Magic when a figure would crash into him. To his surprise, it was young Claire. Right, she had come to Torensten to learn magic, hadn't she?
Caius certainly looked different from when Claire had seen him last, though. He lacked the grime, dirt and matted hair of someone who had been traveling for some time. His blonde hair was neatly tied back into a ponytail and he wore dress clothes instead of armor. For the best really, Torensten was hot as could be.
But before he could greet Claire and ask what it was she was doing, an explosion rang from the university that half of Torensten could hear. Caius would squint at that.

When asked what part Claire was apologizing for, she admittedly looked up from her position. She hadn't gone tumbling backwards to the ground, a testament to some training perhaps? Alternatively, a testament of Caius' skill, plenty of room for analysis there. She noted his different state of dress, the cleanliness and only then did she properly take a few steps back to assess the differences better.
"...For running into you, of course. Gosh, look at your outfit, that's pretty fancy, Mr. Caius. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were going out on a date~" Claire's mischief was in full effect and was a necessary diversion from the shenanigans she just caused. As far as evidence was concerned, there wouldn't be any by the time the faculty and students went to investigate the spot. Mog would have an empty potion beaker, which he could easily conceal in a moment's notice.
"If you are going out on a date, then I'm also sorry for interrupting you, right Mog?" when it came to putting on the added layer of 'smooth', Mog was a great assistant. Filling in blanks in Claire's testimonies very inconspicuously. Ah, what a great duo, spreading chaos through campus. Together, as they briefly adjusted to look to the wake of the explosion, they didn't seem worried about what happened in the least. Instead they were looking to see who would arrive on the scene. There was this one prim and proper student, fancied himself a Class Leader and future representative. Seeing him come out there and try to solve this mystery, only to fail? Serves him right.
Claire proceeded to fix her outfit, dusting off her black shirt before checking if the matching white and red stockings were damaged in any way. Cleanliness was really important on campus but even if it wasn't, ruining her style was like bringing down her reputation and that wasn't going to happen.

The Dragonblades
Claire changed the subject. Of course he did. How many mischievous little scamps had he dealt with in his line of work? So many times had kids lied and tried to change the subject to get out of trouble. And Claire, as smooth as she was, likely wasn’t prepared for Caius’ approach. Perhaps changing the subject and buttering them up would work on big sister Serah. But Caius was far more direct.
“Changing the subject and buttering me up only confirms your guilt, you know” he pointed out bluntly with an exasperated sigh. The mercenary would hold out a hand to gently take Claire by the wrist. “Come. We’re going to the Rest. Quickly now, I’ll provide you an alibi this one time.”
He was actually going to save her behind? Apparently Caius wasn’t completely stiff. But if she took his offer, he began to move quickly but without letting his legs move with too much blatant haste. He didn’t wish to raise suspicion.
“Before we get too far. If that explosion has any potential to cause harm, you should tell me now so I can go in and save people. Because that’s going to be the difference between a scolding and my turning you into the school for what you did” Caius pointed out with a continued calm but very much direct tone. “You’re getting a scolding either way, but this is a better option than the alternative. If I find out anyone was hurt and I could have stopped it, I’ll be having a word with your sister as well.”

In truth, she didn't mean to butter him up... well too much. She really was just genuinely curious, given she hadn't expected to run into him during one of her 'operations'. Alas, he was pretty sharp, much to Claire's dismay here but maybe there was a way to smooth this over? Firstly, she'd go along with him for the time being. She was meant to make her escape at this point to seal her alibi after all. As they walked, inconspicuously, well mostly, the interrogation began.
"That would be reckless and irresponsible." Claire admitted, for her 'mischief' was never meant to harm, inconvenience (well in a meaningful way), etc her victims. "It's safe, I promise. Otherwise, we'd have gotten caught up in the blast, surely?" hopefully logic prevailed here but of course she knew it was safe, Claire was the inventor of this little potion. For Mog's part, he just held up an empty, unharmed potion bottle.
Essentially, it released a gas that could mimic sounds. This one was an explosion but typically it was meant to sound like Thunder. As her scheme went, they'd essentially come out, see that nothing was impacted and there was no sign of the cause. Maybe they'd blame it on someone mixing the wrong potion elsewhere~? A simple but well calculated prank. "Besides, what happened to your beard?" Claire pointed out, not to change the subject for once but out of genuine curiosity.

Oh, so she admitted to it, did she? Well, that was fast. Caius had been sure she had done it, but he had been preparing for the possibility she wouldn't back down. It seemed that he didn't need to bluff after all. "Small explosions are a thing, and can still be quite dangerous" Caius corrected her when she tried to downplay it though, with the idea that because they weren't caught in the blast that it couldn't possibly be dangerous. "Before we get on the tram, I want you to detail me the specifics. I don't want to get too far away from the university if it happens that you blew up something that could potentially be dangerous to the other students."
Essentially, in case she had blown up her fellow students by accident. Of course, Caius was unaware that it was simply a sound bomb. So he did need to know before they could go anywhere. "Best detail it quickly, the tram's coming up. Wouldn't want to be standing here suspiciously in the middle of the street while they're looking for the culprit, would we?"
Perhaps he was a little strict in that sense, but he had told her before that it was essentially his job to protect people. And it was a job he intended to do here if he needed to, so hopefully she would understand that. Claire then asked what happened to his beard, and the mercenary would sigh in turn.
Yuffie. Yuffie was what happened.
"I thought a change of pace would be nice" he lied. It was most definitely Yuffie's fault, but he had no interest in explaining to a teenager that Yuffie's loud boasting had caused a critical error in the shaving process.

Claire was largely silent, her expression looked like she might genuinely be reflecting on her actions. A sight many of her teachers would love to see! There was a reason for it and it wasn't guilt, which is why her sea blue eyes looked directly into his own. Even Mog looked like he was apologetic.
"I want to say that I'd never do something to harm my fellow students or the University." Claire began after some silence as she took the time to listen and earnestly evaluate Caius' concerns. "I also want to let you know, that I'd never lie to you, Mr. Caius." she continued, taking an entirely different angle than expected.
"It's impossible for that 'explosion' to do anything but before I continue, I'd like to talk about something related." Claire stated before the shift in her expression began. She looked rather moody, her eyebrows pensive and her gaze went from respectful and apologetic to focused and determined.
"...Since I would never lie to you, don't ever lie to me, either, okay? What really happened to you, why do you look so different?" Given Claire's immense respect and platonic admiration, hearing her shift in tone from her usual bubbly personality, to something similar to her worried expression when she first arrived was drastic. Now her eyes were observing, calculating... Serah and herself did miss important cues last time. In Claire's case it was because she was entirely in the moment of their sisterly bonding and silliness. Now that she wasn't distracted, she'd always been very good at reading people, adults especially.
As for the air around Claire, it was akin to static electricity. Metaphorical clouds seemed to accumulate around Claire and one wrong move, ZAP!. Thus far the boys in her grade, as well as a few seniors seemed to make this mistake, constantly. One of them in particular, the reason for this prank in particular, had been stressing the teen out tremendously.

Surprisingly, Caius for once looked visibly annoyed when Claire refused to elaborate except that it was safe. He wanted details. He needed to know that the people there would be safe. But before he could grill her further, her own tone would suddenly change. Suddenly, she was calling him on his own bluff, and asking for the truth of why he looked different.
Sheesh, talk about a headache. Being scolded for lying by a child whom you were scolding for lying. But it was clear they weren’t getting anywhere until he told the truth and he needed to be sure the people in the school were safe.
“Recruit burst into the doors and started loudly boasting while I was trying to shave. You can probably figure out the rest. I didn’t want to make a big deal of it so I started playing it off” he responded bluntly in turn. “If you mean the clothes… It’s hot.”
That was really it. It’s Torensten. It’s hot. He couldn’t wear his armor all the time in Torensten. It was too hot for that. So with that, he stared her in the eyes.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you. But it would make me feel better if you told me what this thing you planted was, and where in the school it was, so I can do threat analysis” he then tried yet again, this time more honest about the why. “Preferably quickly. Even seemingly harmless things can have consequences in a place full of potions and magic books and magic crystals scattered everywhere. That’s why I’m worried.”

With a scrutinizing gaze, Claire assessed what she was told. Her mood hadn't lifted throughout, instead she turned to Mog and silently, he presented the empty potion bottle. "If you were to look for it, you'd never find it, because it's right here." Claire stated stoically. Mog flew a bit closer to Caius, so that he could get a whiff of the stray scent. "Did you have Soda in your world? It's a carbonated beverage that turns the liquid into a fizz state, a gas basically. This potion works like that, you shake up the bottle and when you remove the cork from the bottle instead of the fizz erupting, it's all gas. The sound the gas makes depends on this..." she pulled out a magic crystal that seemed attuned to her.
"...this Magic Crystal determines the sound the gas makes as it evaporates. It leaves no trace as a result. Just seeing the look of Mr. Hero's face when he gets out to the entrance, only to see nothing, serves him right. Us white mages aren't damsels that have to wait back at camp." her eyebrows furrowed now and she looked genuinely annoyed but it was clearly not directed at Caius.
"Really...he's only a bit better than me at martial prowess and that's just cause he's a boy. In our Magic Theory classes, I'm comfortably beating him. 'Stay back, Claire. I'll protect you', hmph. Do I look like I need protecting?" a veritable storm was in motion as the source of today's frustrations and thus, prank; came to ahead.
"She's talking about her rival, Leo, Kupo. Honestly? He's a bit like, no...A LOT LIKE SNOW---" Claire immediately moved to silence the moogle.
"If you have to tell Serah about the prank, that's fine but don't tell her about Leo. He's in one of her classes as it is. He's such a teacher's pet too..." Claire sighed, not quite strangling Mog but 'hugging' him far too assertively. He was flailing the empty potion bottle for a moment until he settled down.

The Dragonblades
"A sound bomb" echoed Caius, as the mercenary listened to Claire's testimony on what it was she had done. She had even brought the evidence with her, clever girl. No wonder she was in such a hurry to get out of there. "Naturally harmless, but can cause harm in an unstable environment. Luckily, I doubt the professors are unprepared for dropped potions and crystals" came his analysis, and he nodded his head slightly as if to mark approval. All he had wanted was to verify that she hadn't potentially caused a major incident by accident. So with that, he kept moving, buying tickets for the tram.
Still, she continued to show she was more intelligent and resourceful than her age would indicate. She was morbidly curious and enthusiastic in many ways, but things like this reminded Caius that he wasn't dealing with the average teenager. As he ushered her onto the tram, he listened in silence while she vented about the miscreant who had led her to decide she would prank the school today. Mog would provide some context as well, noting them as a rival, and as being a lot like Serah's fiancé.
"A lot like Snow?" he commented with a curious glance, but didn't speak further on it right away. Each car had seats for four that all had windows overlooking them so they could see the city below. Caius would sit down and motion for her to sit across from him so she had more room. Caius relaxed with his arms behind his head once they were seated. As the tram took off, Caius would motion for her to peer out the window at the view below, hoping it might better her mood before he spoke up. If Caius had any sort of fear of heights, he had dropped it a long time ago when he had learned to Warp. And if he had only bottled it back then, well... Flying on a dragon would certainly drive that out once you got used to it. But then again, having his warping capabilities as a safety net certainly helped.
"By what your sister told me about Snow, and by the sounds of your testimony... I think this Leo may hold some level of affection for you that you haven't yet noticed" Caius mused aloud once they were settled and the tram would take off into the air. "But that aside, I think you're misguided in your means of striking back at him. While likely harmless physically, you need to consider how your actions will impact the other students. You enjoy your time studying and learning magic, right?" he then inquired, looking her in the eyes then. His voice remained gentle and calm, though it was clear that she was definitely getting a scolding now. "Imagine if someone continuously disturbed your studies. Imagine getting into a flow with your studies or a practical, it's getting good, you're building momentum and your drive is high. And then a disturbance occurs and..."
Caius snaps his fingers. "Poof. You're out of your zone. Opportunity lost. And then the disturbances keep happening."
He made a face, eyelids dropped. "Because I can tell by your Moogle hiding the evidence that this isn't your first time."
Everything about how she had done this spoke of practice. This was far from her first time doing this, it was obvious.
"In summary. I could tell you that it's a bad thing to do, or immature or something like that. But I think you already know that so there's no real point in hammering that into your head further. Instead, I'm going to ask you to think about how you would feel being constantly put in the middle of these pranks when you're trying to study hard and your sister is working hard as a professor to afford your education."
He did have a comment about her remarks regarding boys and their physical strength, but he would save that for after.
