“Good, bad. Rumors can make or break a man’s reputation. Sometimes they’re the ones that aren’t even true.”
Rumors are a great asset to any warrior’s cause - so long as they’re flattering. But even bad or outright ridiculous ones can lead to potentially interesting scenarios. How will rumors impact your character’s interactions with others? What rumors will your character hear about another, prior to a thread? In this minigame, it is up to you to bring said rumors to life!
Replying to this thread, you must cite the following:
- Character name. You may set up forms for multiple characters if you like. - At least two POSITIVE rumors about your character. - At least two NEGATIVE rumors about your character. If you cannot or do not wish to use true rumors, you may use false ones. - At least ONE rumor that is completely false and ridiculously so. The more outrageous the better. This may be positive or negative. - You may include neutral-level rumors as well.
There is no limit to the amount of rumors posted. Note that anyone may ICly overhear any of the rumors on this list and utilize them in-thread. Post at your own risk!
Name: Caius Dragelion
- Rumors have run rampant for some time that the Dragonblades had managed to befriend an actual dragon for their cause! While it hadn’t been proven, several sightings were reported of Dragonblades leader Caius fighting alongside a small blue dragon. Some depicted it as a terrifying force of nature, while others called it a friendly creature who had saved many lives. Confirmed when said dragon aided the Dragonblades in slaying the Kraken and saving Torensten. Said dragon, named Vordun, was publicly honored by King Hremit alongside Torensten’s saviors as per Torensten’s traditions. As the warriors told it, it was Vordun that pulled their boat through the storm and saved them from a watery grave. The sailors who were saved call seeing this dragon in the skies a sign of good luck for the day.
- The Monthly Mog told of how Torensten’s Festival of the Hunt went astray when a terrifying monster meant for the festival broke free and went on a rampage, putting the people in danger after it broke through the barrier. It was eventually winners Caius and a figure named Mu who would stop the beast before it could do too much damage. But apparently a dragon was also reported as sighted attacking the beast! Following the Kraken encounter, this appears to have been confirmed.
- A rumormonger who claims to have ties to the noble circles of Torensten claim that Dragonblades leader Caius has caught the attention of King Hremit in a big way. Between his staggeringly rising reputation and his battles against the festival’s beast, the Lich, and the Kraken, King Hremit is considering Caius as a potential prospect for his personal honor guard. Possibly even his own statue in the square, though this part seems less likely.
- While many depict Caius as stoic but kind, apparently the walls have eyes as one gossiper claims to have overheard the dramatic recountation of a treasure hunt gone wrong. Apparently Caius and others had been contracted to aid in searching an ancient ruin for treasure. The expedition leader apparently turned on the others in hopes of taking the entire treasure for himself, before Caius killed him without mercy in retaliation. In a likely unrelated rumor, apparently the fabled treasure hunter and explorer Kahlil entered a ruin with a group of sellswords, but only he was seen returning to Aljana to sell his found treasure. He apparently looked like he had seen a ghost, and refused to talk about the expedition.
- There have been rumblings that Dragonblades leaders Caius and Celes may be closer than they appear. The context is vague and has been interpreted in a number of ways. For what it’s worth, the pair were sighted walking through Torensten’s gardens together, and well dressed at that. Neither of them have been seen to dress formally very often. Almost never, actually.
- Apparently a figure that resembles Dragonblades leader Caius was sighted at the local opera in Torensten. Most notably though, was that he was seated in the spot apparently reserved for the date of the show’s star Maria Nightingale. Considering the impressions that some gossipers had about Dragelion’s love life, this was certainly a shock. Another wrinkle to this story is the opera star’s clear resemblance to Caius’ co-leader Celes. Does General Chere perhaps live a double life? And what does this mean for Caius’ appearance at the opera?
- A local Provo gossip apparently heard from a “broken-down, potentially intoxicated hobo in a tavern”, that Dragonblades leader Caius stole his woman, and they took his dog too. Who knew that the stoic mercenary may well be a homewrecker? How many more hearts will he steal? How many more dogs?
- A man apparently was overheard telling another man that Caius Dragelion ranked amongst the most skilled swordsmen in all of Zephon, and apparently encouraged him to challenge Caius. This has apparently led to a few boastful swordsmen challenging the Dragonblades leader to duels in the streets, hoping to make a name for themselves. All were beaten soundly and some even joined the Dragonblades. On the other hand, this apparently led to a maniac aiming to get Caius’ attention through other means — namely setting fire to several villages across Torensten, until they were struck down by Caius.
- Apparently Caius may have a thing for pretty blonde and brown-haired women. The company that Caius keeps has not helped this rumor.
- It has also not helped the rumor that Caius appears to greatly prefer the company of women, perhaps enjoying it a bit too much with the mercenary being seen with many different women at his side more often than not. There are many things that could be taken from this, but for a local hero who’s love life and sexuality are shrouded in mystery, it has become a topic of sweet, gossipy debate.
- While not many rumors have circulated about the mercenary regarding the Sonora area specifically, someone said they saw someone resembling him in appearance heading towards Sonora’s red light district. People have thought of it as they will.
- In only the second rumor concerning Sonora, one of those who correctly identified Caius as one of the slayers of the giant robot house attacking Sonora, claims that the mercenary has agreed to pose shirtless for the cover of a currently unnamed local male modelling magazine. Some people are apparently into this and are hunting down an advance copy. This may explain the RL District appearance. Or maybe not? Either way, the poor lad apparently was met with peculiar stares from male and female alike the next time he stepped into Sonora after the rumor started. Some had no shame and apparently stared straight to his chest or lower. The mercenary was depicted as having little to no reaction. Such stoicity and willpower! It’s almost like he didn’t even understand the connotation. But he did, right? Right?

Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past.
Positive: Kuja has made a name for himself in Aljana as a dealer of magical weaponry. He's in regular business with the local blacksmiths, buying their swords, armor, and other trinkets so that he can infuse them with protective or offensive magic and sell them at a profit. The quality of his work is unmatched in the trade.
Positive: Kuja has been known to frequent the theaters of Torensten and Provo with a teenage girl who claims to be his sister. He's a patron of the higher arts and an afficionado of culture. He can generally be found at the opening night of any anticipated play.
Negative: Chief among Kuja's enemies on Zephon are the Dragonblades -- more specifically Caius Dragelion who claims that he's in league with the fiend that destroyed Metaia Temple and shrouded the land in death. They claim that he's a powerful mage skilled in both white and black magic, and that he's as dangerous as he is manipulative. These claims are true, of course, but Kuja would rather like that they go away.
Negative: Any traveler from the world of Gaia can attest that Kuja is a world destroying monster who leads nations to war, entire races to extinction, and planets to their end with sadistic glee. Kuja fears that word of his past misdeeds will travel, giving him a disadvantage when gaining the trust of gullible idiots everywhere.
False: Given his dress, appearance, and propensity for wandering the streets at night, rumor has it that he's some kind of exotic sex worker. His gender is ambiguous and will often change in the telling of this particular suspicion.
Positive: There have been some sightings of a mysterious girl with a tail roaming around the paths of Headstone forest. It is rumored that if you see her, give her a gift. In doing so, she will provide you a safe path through the woods.
Positive: It is rumored that two unworldly beautiful siblings are often seen together - be it on dragonback, at the theater, or other locations. There is much confusion on the gender of siblings - two sisters or a brother and a sister. But they sometimes find one of the siblings seemingly having a conversation while the other is silent. Overall, it seems the older of the two is trying to teach her properly. Though odd, the younger one is cute to watch. Negative: Two young ladies in moogle cloaks have been sighted at one of the fall festivals in Torensten. They are considered nuisances who egg your house if you do not give them enough candy. Further, one of the young ladies is suspected to have been part of the vandalism in the Plaisir de Magicka. Negative/Partially false: There is rumor that a girl has taken up residence in the ghost village of Headstone Forest. Some claim that she is a witch who commands the haunts of the forest to kill people or to retrieve them to eat their soul. False: A young lady was found trying to commit suicide by jumping off a building. A young knight helped get her down safely. Rumors have spread that she is not entirely all together and should be taken into custody for her own safety. This has been exacerbated by other rumored things she done that is very odd behavior.

Positive: As a co-founder of the Dragonblades, Celes and Caius are the closest thing that Torenten has to fulltime heroes. She has an extensive list of accomplishments under her belt from slaying behemoths to exorcising malicious ghosts to her ongoing battle against the gang of bandits plaguing the region. Celes has devoted her life to making the world a safer place and will never turn down those in need of help -- assuming the request isn't frivolous, of course.
Positive: While Caius is known more for his monster slaying, Celes is one to stay behind during a disaster to try to aid those around her from the wreckage, ruin, and debris. She was there healing the wounded and helping with the evacuation when Chaos appeared over Torensten to rend it in two. She was there helping victims of the Reignstorm during the flooding in Provo and later she nearly drowned saving a child from the flooding in Torensten when a nearby levy broke in the midst of Kraken's attack. More than a few people directly owe her their lives.
Negative: Celes is known as a merciless instructor, driving would-be Dragonblades recruits into the dirt and refusing to give them even mid-level missions until they've earned her approval. Disgruntled dropouts have spread word that she hates men in particular and takes a kind of sadistic pleasure out of punishing them. On the field, she's as ruthless as she is cold, and her enemies would very much like to see her taken down a peg.
Negative: Celes is many things. Beautiful, determined, strong. What she isn't is available, and she turns down every man's proposition with almost excessive cruelty. This has given her a reputation as a heartbreaker which can often be heard grumbled by humiliated men after a few pints at the tavern.
False: Celes is an unbreakable ice queen who hates men and so it stands to reason that Caius must have earned her loyalty by taming her frosty heart with the heat of romance. Celes is in love with the womanizing mercenary and has gladly joined his battle harem as his primary romantic partner.
Positive: Cissnei, sole investigator at Angel Eye Detective Agency, is the person that can without a doubt find what you are looking for. Her prices are fair and she is up for negotiations. Her business cards can be found throughout Sonora. But sometimes, she is good enough to find you. Positive: It is rumored that she with a group of other black suited women took down the Gambino family and made the Vista Tower Condominiums safe again. It has not been confirmed, but it is rumored that she may be protecting the condos in the area. Negative: A part of Sonora was leveled when Sonoran forces and two white haired men battled. It is rumored that a red-haired woman, with a small tactics team, was also involved in the incident and exacerbated the situation with helicopters and explosives. Some think they should be taken into custody. Negative: Some have seen the lady in the shady areas of Sonora’s redlight district. Some believe this woman may be consorting with some of the seedy characters in the region. Others believe she is collecting information, and you should be careful what you say around her. False: Cissnei is a black widow who kills indiscriminately. She takes joy in finding an unsuspecting person to lure in with her charm for them to meet a dire end.

Yuffie proved that we are alone in the universe. We weren’t before her first space expedition.
Positive: It is said that a single noble woman appeared overnight to aid in the University of Magi. She thought it important people connect and share their thoughts with one another. As inspiration, she worked with a team of engineers to develop a new invention. Something new is in the works, automaton messenger birds. What’s more delightful than receiving a letter? Positive: An anonymous donor has helped the church in increasing the potency and numeration of their potions and antidotes. Many more lives can be saved and aided thanks to her hardwork and dedication. It is rumored she also saved the life of the Maxillar daughter, cursed by the departed man that courted her. This has left many to wonder if she has otherworldly healing abilities or is a fey in disguise. Negative: There has been a new noble lady that has appeared in Torensten high society circles. Though she is polite and diligent, it seems she has danced with or engaged in conversation with a specific few people - windowed noblemen of wealth and sorcery. Some believe this means she is after nothing but power and money. Negative: Some persons in high society are spreading rumors that Lady Hilda is not a noble at all, but rather a middle-class woman masquerading as a one to raise her status. No one can seem to prove her background behind the Fabool emblem, which would be next to impossible as an offworlder. Because of this, some suspect she is polite and kind to them to take advantage of their wallets and to gain status. False: Some rumors have spread that as soon as a new local artist opens an exhibit that is a hit, a few days later, they are never seen again. It’s as if they had one heavenly vision then abandoned all worldly concerns. Across all victims, it is said that right before their disappearance, they have been seen in the company of one particularly beautiful woman requesting a portrait. Some believe it to be Lady Hilda herself.
Positive: Sephiroth has been seen at the scene of several disasters and has saved a few civilians from death by earthquake, zombies, or evil witches. It hasn't been often, and the civilians at the scene know nothing about him, but he has acted in a few ways to earn him a positive reputation.
Positive: Mostly, Sephiroth has earned a reputation in Provo as the guy with the long hair and weird eyes who likes to sip coffee in the back of cafes, and who is generally quiet, polite, and minds his own business. Some are distrustful by his obvious otherwordly origins and dangerous aura. Others (primarily young women) are attracted to his inhuman beauty and seeming intelligence. He ignores both of these factions in the hopes that he will be left alone to quietly read a book in peace.
Negative: Sephiroth is a monster. He is a questionably human monster with a loose grip on reality and a hell-bent determination to destroy the world for the sake of his alien mother. There is no shortage of witnesses from Gaia who are very, very happy to tell anyone about his history given even the slightest prompting. This rumor has caused endless trouble for Sephiroth varying from life or death battles to getting harassed in the street.
Negative: Sephiroth is said to have slaughtered countless members of the Sonoran military in an extremely public fight which involved explosives and air support. As such, he has an extremely high bounty on his head by Sonoran leadership, and any mercenaries working in the area have likely heard of him.
False: Sephiroth's greatest enemy is the world famous ninja, Yuffie Kisaragi, who single-handedly destroyed him in combat so thoroughly that he runs whenever she approaches. They have a bitter rivalry which has lasted between worlds.
Positive: "Oh yeah that vagabond, yeah heard if you ask for help, he's always ready to lend a hand. It might be a wild and interesting process, but in the end his whole heart is put into everything he does."
Negative: "Be that as it may, I've heard he's a bit of a promiscuous sort. Seen sneaking outta people's homes in the middle of the night in various stages of undress. Men, women, others. No one is safe from his lecherous glances."
Positive: "I've heard he's the lord of the dance in human flesh. Mildred said he was dancing in the square one day, and the whole village stopped what they were doing so enamored by him. They say his dances can change people's emotions whether rapturous joy, confusion. To watch is to gamble but boy oh boy I've heard it's a miraculous thing to behold."
Negative: "He may be able to dance, but anyone who gets three words into a conversation quickly finds out, he's dumb as rocks. Can't keep a steady job or residency either. Seems like a bum to me."
False: "Aye, but I've heard behind those pretty boy eyes, there lurks the mind of a genius. Mad or not, no one knows. His stupidity is just a façade, a ruse to fool us all into believing him naïve, but watch out I say. That boy is planning something on a grand scale."
Post by Oren McGinnis on May 17, 2024 18:05:59 GMT -6
Name: Oren McGinnis
Positive: Oren, in spite of his cynical demeanor, does have generally good morals and only accepts jobs for the "right" people in his current mercenary work. (e.g. he will absolutely refuse to do work for Sonora unless it's for a group trying to undermine their corporate overlords)
Positive: Many who have spotted Oren off the job have noted he seems to have a surprisingly strong sweet tooth. He will drink coffee that is almost sickeningly sweet to most people, consume sweet treats, so on and so forth. Most would find it oddly humanizing to witness from him considering his usual behavior. It is perhaps lucky he lives a pretty active lifestyle combined with enhanced physical prowess...
Mixed: Oren occasionally has lapses in memory about his old life and even current events in Zephon, though some could interpret that as him purposefully trying to forget and ignore certain things... This could also likely be related to his tenuous sanity discussed below. How someone reacts to any of this could vary, especially if they learn of the possible causes.
Negative: Despite his morals, there have been signs that Oren... Isn't completely sane. Only those who knew Oren in his home world might know the possible reasons for it, but Oren currently has gained a bit of infamy since his arrival in Zephon for a tendency to lose himself to... Very violent methods for accomplishing certain jobs. He can be reigned in by the right people getting through to him, but some wonder if he might ever fully break one day... It does cause some issues in getting certain kinds of work currently.
Negative: As an Ex-SOLDIER, Oren does have the iconic Mako eyes and physical abilities that would be recognized on certain others who arrived before him in Zephon who have proven troublesome to put it nicely... Whether someone is bothered by that or not is up to them, but it does add to any talks about him and worries about the types of people he might be associated with... Of course, he has stayed rather solitary since arriving in Zephon so the rumors are of dubious validity currently.
