Nick would listen to Caius as he went on in detail about how the jobs they take on usually involves dealing with dangerous creatures, nodding his head in understanding. When he heard about the other options, but declined the idea of enlisting as a local guard since he wanted to have some freedom for himself. He liked the idea of semi-independence. After all, there could be moments where he could either take on a mission by himself or ask someone to come along with him. He wouldn't mind working with someone to complete a mission.
As he listened further to what Caius was telling him, he would be told that if he were to join up that he should know his limits since anyone could try to hire him off the streets if he mentioned the name Dragonblade, and that members of the guild have been getting hired for some difficult jobs that would be tough to do. He would nod again in understanding what he was hearing. After all, the young man knew that he had limits and couldn't really do much since he only knew two spells.
After those important pieces of conversation were finished, Nick heard the man say to him that they could head out whenever they were ready. His lips curled upwards into a smile as he said "I am ready sir, I don't really have much on me anyways. Aside from some Potions and an Antidote." As he waited to be brought to the guild to be shown around. He was certainly eager to see this place and what it had to offer. It was better than wandering around like a drifting stranger. Even though he would be pretty much seen as a stranger to this world.

The Dragonblades
Caius nodded his head when Nick would indicate he was ready to go. Cocking his head towards the square's exit, he would motion for him to head that way as Caius first had to take care of some business. Taking out a magic crystal native to Torensten, he would press it to the giant fish they had just taken down, and give it a moment before turning to Vordun.
"I think you can take that as your prize. It should suffice for your supper, and it's better than getting them to clean it up" Caius told Vordun as he pointed towards the giant dead fish. "I'll meet you back home. There's no poisons or harmful substances, so it's clear to eat. Enjoy."
He scratched behind Vordun's ears before he began walking to meet up with Nick. Vordun meanwhile, would take flight, grabbing the giant fish in his talons before flying off into the distance. Caius would soon catch up. "Apologies for the delay. While Torensten's people know about Vordun, it's still not the best thing to constantly walk around town with a dragon in tow" he explained as they walked. Eventually they would come to a stop where Caius would buy two tickets for the air tram. It wasn't long before the Voyage de Torensten air trams would descend and Caius would motion for Nick to step inside.
"As you've probably figured out, Torensten is a huge city. This is the main way you'll be getting around" he explained as the tram would take off. Each car had seats for four that all had windows overlooking them so they could see the city below. Caius would sit down and motion for Nick to join him on the other side.

Nick would watch as the dragon took the big fish beast in its talons, believing that the creature would make a good meal for that dragon. When Caius apologized for the slightly delay, he said in response, "It's alright, I am sure its understandable in one way or another." as they made their way down to the Dragonblade Guild.
When they arrived at this one stop in the city that had something called an Air Tram for transportation, he looked at the vehicle itself for a moment before being signaled to hop in. Which he would do so quickly. It kind of reminded him of the airship he was on before he got transported to this mysterious world, except the airships didn't have seats to sit upon during flight, at least from what he knew from memory. He gently took a seat right next to Caius when he motioned to do so, the seats themselves were rather comfortable. Not bad at all. He actually liked it.
When he was asked about what he knew about Torensten, he would answer with the response: "I honestly don't know much about Torensten, other than it being a port-side city. It certainly is quite a big city if I must say so myself."
The young teen would look out the window and see the view of the big city from above, it was certainly very interesting for someone like him. There were places that he hadn't been to in this port-side city, which would be nice to visit if he didn't have much else to do in particular while he was here. While they traveled in the tram, Nick would ask Caius a question that went like this: "If I may ask, Caius. Are you a knight of sorts that implements the use of magic with your sword skills?" He was quite curious if this man was a certain mage like he was.

The Dragonblades
Caius relaxed with his arms behind his head once they were seated. As the tram took off, Caius would peer out the window at the view below. If Caius had any sort of fear of heights, he had dropped it a long time ago when he had learned to Warp. And if he had only bottled it back then, well... Flying on a dragon would certainly drive that out once you got used to it. But then again, having his warping capabilities as a safety net certainly helped.
Though it was clear that Nick had no real experience with Torensten, and had only just arrived. He had expected this, just by looking at him. Though he would then pose a question of his own. Why he would think Caius was some sort of knight though, was questionable. Caius had said he was a mercenary, wasn't he? That the Dragonblades were a mercenary guild that at times doubled as a peacekeeping force? He wasn't sure where he got "knight" out of that, or that magic was exclusive to knighthood somehow. Still, he was on the money in some respect. It was just... Weird, that he even came to that conclusion while knowing next to nothing about Caius.
"I used to be a Kingsglaive, back in my own world and country. You could call them... Sort of a special forces unit for the military. Closest thing they had to knights, if you really wanna get technical" Caius brought up with a casual shrug of his shoulders. "We borrowed magic from the crystal, using the King of Lucis as a conduit. Though somehow, I've managed to retain my abilities since coming here. I don't... Really know how it works, to be honest. But I've done my best to do Lucis proud even if I can no longer be of service there. I'm aware there's likely no going back for me. So I just need to make the most of it. And you? Where did you learn magic?"
Post by Nick Zixian on May 16, 2022 9:46:29 GMT -6
Nick would listen to the answer given by the man as he gave an affirmative nod, he would be quite surprised to hear that he got his magic from a crystal using someone called the King of Lucius as a conduit for channeling magic. He never thought about someone gaining magic through another source other than naturally learning it, including the fact that Caius was actually a Kingsglaive back in his own world. It was all very interesting to him. Showing that he wasn't the only person who was transported and displaced from their original world.
"Wow... that is really interesting!" He responded with after being told the information that would answer his previous question to Caius. When he was asked by him about how he had learned magic, he would reply with "I was taught by my mother who was a Red Mage, I was always interested in learning to be one when I was a young kid. She had gifted me her own wooden staff on my sixth birthday, and I've used it for practicing my spells. Before my mother could continue training me further, she was killed by a thief in my world.... for the sake of revenge. I wanted to destroy him for such an atrocious and vile act, but I couldn't bring myself to doing it back then. It didn't seem to be in my nature. I never got the chance to learn any more spells from my dear mother... she was a great Red Mage and a great parent to me. No one else could replace her..." That was the whole explanation on how he learned his magic. While it was rather lengthy, it was the best way for him to explain everything.
After telling Caius how he learned his magic, he was about to pretty much break down in tears. Nick tried to keep himself from crying, but it didn't really seem to work. He ended up crying a little. Thinking back to the previous years of his life where his mother was still around, but he knew that he'd have to move on eventually. Even if it would take a while. At least he still had his memories of all the times that he spent training with her.

The Dragonblades
The boy actually started to cry. Caius would blink a few times in surprise, before sheepishly scratching the back of his head at the display. He didn't know what to do in this situation. The lad had dropped all of this on his lap, very personal stuff, and then broke down into tears. And Caius just... Wasn't equipped to handle that. How was he supposed to handle that when he had just met the kid? But it was clear that the kid had a lot of personal baggage that he had yet to be able to vent out, and well, the Dragonblades were supposed to be a family. If this kid intended to join up, the least Caius could do was try and show the needed compassion. Even if he wasn't entirely sure how. Yuna was better at this sort of thing than he was.
And yet, he understood. He understood the desire for revenge. But this kid couldn't bring himself to do it...
He had.
Did that make him a monster? He had already considered himself a monster for what the bandits had made him do, but this time around there was nobody to force him to do it. He had made that decision. He had taken human life without mercy, or a second thought. He had wanted them dead and then they were dead. Simple as that.
The mercenary took a deep breath then, trying to settle himself enough to make some attempt at consolation.
"Much of my combat skill I had to learn alone. My father got me through the basics, but... I was too young to go much further beyond that at the time. I was then instructed in how to use my newfound abilities by various teachers within the Kingsglaive, though in my time since coming here, experience has become my new teacher. Nobody can replace your mother. But you can move forward and continue to learn in your own way."

"Yes, I agree... I do need to move forward and continue to learn in my own way. Even though it will take some time. Even if someone beloved is gone, the memories of them still remain in the hearts and minds of those who loved them," said Nick as he wiped his eyes and nose on his own robe sleeve, and took a deep breath in to calm himself down. He would continue to look at the view while he was seated in the vehicle.
The young red mage in training had found it interesting that Caius was taught the basics by his own father, and that the teachers of the Kingsglaive that he was part of helped him learn to use his newfound abilities. He also agreed in his mind that experience was the best teacher. He didn't really have much else to say for the moment as he looked out at the view while he rode in the Air Tram.
He would sit in his seat and wait, while tapping his foot on the ground softly. Only making a soft thumping noise when the tip of his foot tapped the ground of the vehicle he was riding it. While he was waiting for the Air Tram to reach its destination, he decided to try and change the conversation a bit. Nick would ask Caius "So.... do you have any favorite foods that you enjoy eating? I don't mind eating fish." It was a rather simple question, even though the young man probably had many questions on his mind.

The Dragonblades
While the past was a hard thing to process for the boy, he at least seemed willing to try and move forward.
Even if someone beloved is gone, their memories still remain...
He would have to remember that one. Caius nodded his head slowly.
"Yeah. Yeah they do."
How much had Caius lost at this point? He didn't like to think about it. But there it was, right in front of him. His home, his family, his very world... Every purpose and place of belonging he had ever been. He couldn't help but be afraid sometimes that something would come and take this one too. This place of belonging, this purpose... Everything that he had built here And he would do anything to protect it.
The tram began to slow down as ask what food he enjoyed. A casual question, but definitely easier to answer.
And easier on the heart, at that.
"Fish, and other meats. I'm also quite taken with Cup Noodles laced with meat. Behemoth meat especially" he brought up in turn. Man, he was getting hungry just thinking about it. "Cup Noodles are like... Ramen, or noodles. But in water inside of a cup. And you boil the water over a fire and it cooks the noodles in the water and gives it a rich flavor. And you can make the flavor even richer if you put something else in like behemoth meat to enrich it. Then you can eat the meat and the ramen, and then drink the water and all three of these things enrich each other. That's a favorite of mine."
The tram would eventually reach its destination and the two would step off. In time, they would come to a cozy, two story building with a small courtyard attached to the back.
The Wyvern's Rest.
It was a bit small. The first floor was just a single large room with walls separating the different parts of it. The entryway was mainly just a desk with a young woman minding it. The next was a lounge, complete with a fireplace, chairs, and a place to grab food and drink. There were places that led to where one could use facilities, store equipment and cook, but they were still adjacent. Upstairs though, led to many different small rooms. All for housing the mercenaries who stayed here, as well as a few bathrooms.

Nick would listen to the man's answer about his favorite food and said "Cup of Noodles... That does sound rather tasty, even with meat included as well. I've always been a seafood person, I even enjoy Shrimp on occasion. But, I wouldn't mind having meat as well." as he continued to ride the tram with the man he was traveling with for the time being. He never really ever tried eating noodles out of a cup before, all his meals that he had eaten in the past were served on a smooth wooden plate.
As the tram arrived at its intended destination, he would step off with Caius when the time had come. He made sure to stay by the man at all times, so that he wouldn't get lost in this portside city. He hadn't ever seen transportation like the Air Tram before, since there was nothing like that back in his own home world. He looked around as he traveled alongside Caius. Taking in the view of this part of the portside city.
Eventually... him and Caius would arrive at their next destination, a two story building with a small courtyard in the back. He would look at the sign that had read The Wyvern's Rest for a small moment in time. He followed the man inside when the time came to do so, not wanting to get distracted for too long by a sign posted outside the facility. When he entered the building, he was quite amazed its interior.
"Wow! What a place this is! It's got that nice homey feeling to it!" He said to Caius excitedly as he looked around the area. He felt like a little kid at a festival, even though he wasn't the younger version of himself anymore. He was a young teenager that would eventually approach his young adolescence in the next couple of years.

The Dragonblades
Caius chuckled a bit when the kid called it the “Cup of Noodles.”
“It’s just ‘Cup Noodles’ for short. But I do enjoy fishing. I wouldn’t mind a bit of company sometime if you would care to join me” Caius offered. It was weird to think of having company besides Vordun while fishing, but when Noctis had joined him before, that had been fun, hadn't it? Sure, it had been... Awkward, at times. A lot of awkward, and some very serious subjects. But it was nice talking to someone while you were fishing that could actually speak back. Nothing wrong with Vordun, of course, it was just... Nice. Even if he wasn't quite used to it yet, and would likely still have an adjustment period if Nick decided to take him up on his offer. Social anxiety was such a fun thing, wasn't it?
But Caius couldn't help a hearty laugh when Nick was completely taken with the view of the Wyvern's Rest. Some had called it ramshackle, unfitting for an organization that had amassed the reputation that they had. But Caius liked it. It covered all the necessities and wasn't too complicated. Even if it was getting a little small for the amount of members they were recruiting... They might have to find a new building eventually.
"Well, I'm glad you like it" Caius responded in kind. "This is where many of us call home. Or a home away from home for others. This is where you'll be free to lounge and rest after a hard day's work if you so choose. And also where you can get jobs either from myself, Celes -- who isn't here right now. Or Tomoe, our new secretary in training. So you'll be seeing this place a lot if you operate around Torensten" he would begin the briefing.
"Normally we test our recruits. You've already shown me some of your combat capabilities, so we can skip that. But you're fairly inexperienced. I'm happy to welcome you as a member in training for now after seeing you in action, but I don't think we can test you on the field just yet" Caius then admitted as he turned to him. "I think it's best you enroll in the university, while doing smaller jobs for us while you train. The jobs should help you pay for your education, and you can come back here and practice what you've learned in the courtyard. I also do regular training sessions, so it'd be good to attend those as well. When you do get sent on a job, I'll ensure that you're sent with a buddy so you can keep each other safe and you'll get the experience you need as well. Does that sound alright?"
