[attr="class","ayab-text"] Cassandra continued to sip at her drink slowly as she allowed the embarrassment to settle down within her. Being so forthcoming about it certainly made her feel less than intelligent about it, but back in Eorzea her inner circle had understood. Oh, she should have come up with a way to detect poison from the beginning, but she had settled for just making her own food most of the time. It seemed the safest option without pressing others to cater to her irrational fears. Now she was in this world where no one knew her so what had worked before would no longer do so. Not without insulting someone unintentionally and she was quite fortunate that Caius had been understanding. [break][break]
Her smile was a little dimmer, but she appreciated the shared sentiment to her statement. Her head tilted to the side as she quietly listened to him speak of the enemy the Dragonblades had earned. This was the sort of thing that would make many hesitate. A warning that this line of work came with its own risks that should not be taken lightly in the least. The Original Sin? Cassandra nearly snorted in amusement over the lackluster name. The Ascians had been far more creative with their names and ideas than this group, but she would be an idiot if she underestimated them over an unoriginal name. [break][break]
"Thank you for being forthcoming about this information. It doesn't change my desire to join your ranks, though. I wish to do so all the more since it's obvious that they need to be stopped. The selling of innocents is disgusting and unfathomable to me," she said with a frown. "I know words can be wind, but I'm not joining your ranks with my eyes shut or through rose-colored glasses. I know very well what threats can be posed in organizations like these, but I want to believe the good far outweighs the bad that comes with it. I'd rather be able to help knowing that I have the ability to do so."

The Dragonglaive
And that danger was why he knew he had to bring it up. He knew full well that it would turn lesser men away, it had many times now. He didn't even know if Celes included it in her orientation. It was very likely that as shrewd of a tactician as the General was, she didn't bother to mention the Original Sin until the person was more or less already committed to the cause. Caius could understand a tactic like that. But he decided to go with honesty, transparency. If they weren't strong of will enough to want to fight even with an enemy like the Original Sin around... Then they couldn't be trusted to fight when the time came. And he would not be responsible for the end of their lives just because he decided to leave them in ignorance and then they were targeted. There had to be an understanding that to be a Dragonblade was to be a target. And to handle that, you had to push yourself to be the best of the best. Otherwise, you would die.
They had begun life as a humble mercenary guild. But it was as he said -- with fame, comes enemies. And they had if they wanted to survive. But at the least, Cassandra had a good head on her shoulders. She understood the risks, but wanted to help anyway. Good. Perhaps she would do well after all. He motioned to the bottle. "Feel free to pour yourself another, I think you've earned another drink" he spoke up. If it would be more comfortable to her if she did, then that was fine with him. He knocked back the one he had poured for himself.
"This is good, though. I think you should meet General Chere to see her opinion, but as far as I'm concerned, you have my approval" he remarked with a small laugh. Celes was a better judge of character than he was, he figured. "Once I'm ready to get out on the field again, we can run a field test as well. Lets me see how you operate when things get dicey. What do you say?"

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Another drink? Cassandra felt her usual hesitancy flare up, but she knew the bottle was safe. Pouring herself another drink, she sipped at it again almost shyly. This entire situation still felt surreal to her in a way. The anonymity Zephon gave her was rather welcome, but she knew she would be throwing it away somewhat by hopefully joining the Dragonblades. But it would be on her own terms this time and not because she had been chosen by Hydaelyn. There was also the thought of meeting like-minded people and hopefully forming friendships with them as well. Cassandra knew she would always have Alex. Yet, there was just such a longing to step outside of that comfort and make these choices for herself instead of being thrown into it because of the role she had been given. [break][break]
"Truly? Thank you for your approval, then," she replied with a bright smile. Of course, she still had to gain the approval of his partner, but this was a better start than she had expected. Beneath the happiness was an undercurrent of nervousness. It had been a while since she had seen combat since coming here, and she worried if she was a little rusty or not. Cassandra knew she had grown somewhat complacent since arriving here. Well, it just meant she would have to start training again to brush up on her magic and her movesets. Her spells were certainly nothing to be too modest about, but practice was always essential to make sure she did not get rusty. [break][break]
"I would be more than happy to run a field test. I shall do my best to not disappoint either of you." General Chere was the next person she had to meet and she looked forward to doing so. Caius seemed to think highly over her just from the tone of his voice and the way he referred to her as his better half. Whether it was because they were together or not was still unknown to her, and she was not about to ask such a personal question. Cassandra was soon she would learn for herself soon, anyway. "How are your injuries faring so far? I imagine a kraken is not an easy for in the least," she said, thinking of her own battle with the Primal Leviathan.

The Dragonglaive
He knew she'd be hesitant. And uncomfortable. Caius may not be an expert at social cues but once he learned something, he didn't tend to forget it. Now that he knew Cassandra was paranoid about food and drink she didn't make herself, Caius could at least do his best to make her as comfortable as possible. So he didn't mind the extra steps if that meant she was calm and enjoying herself. While he wasn't normally one for orientation, she was still the Dragonblades' guest right now. So he had every reason to try and be a good host and make sure she was comfortable. Course, he would have anyway, either way.
He could see in her eyes she was nervous, though he didn't know why. It could be anything, really. But as he didn't know the reason behind it, he couldn't help, as much as he regretted this sad fact. "I'm sure you won't disappoint. You don't seem the type to take the prospect of failure lying down" Caius brought up with a small smile. He was sure she'd be fine. "Celes is a bit of a cold character, but she's warm on the inside. Especially if you're polite and show that you're worth respecting. And she really does want the best for her recruits, even if sometimes it doesn't seem like it" he did his best to reassure her. Caius knew full well that Celes was terrifying. But he also knew she meant well. They'd worked together so well for so long for a reason, after all.
She inquired about his injuries, and he poured himself another drink for that one. "It was not" he remarked with a laugh. "Injuries were minimal, but I nearly drowned and nearly froze to death. Both of those happening while I was completely exhausted from the fight has done a number on my body. It's probably going to be a few more days. My armor took some damage too, and I've been repairing it on my spare time. Will need to settle both things before I can get out on the field again."
Annoyed him to no end. He wasn't used to being stuck in one place this long.

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] The reassurance was kind of him to give her. Cassandra did her best to calm her nerves so she would not inconvenience him any further. This was not the way she had wished to leave a first impression with her insecurities and fears. Everyone had them no matter who they were, but she did not wish for them to get in her way. Eventually she did need to learn how to handle them better so they did not control her life as much as they currently did. "I try not to. Most call it sheer stubbornness with a hint of stupidity," she replied with a light laugh. At times she did not know when to give up, but this far it had gotten her through most of the tribulations of her life. [break][break]
"General Chere reminds me of one of my friends back home. Her name is Y'shtola and she can be quite a fierce woman when first meeting her, but you will never meet anyone more loyal and capable towards her friends." No, she did not believe she had much to fear from General Chere as long as she showed she was capable and serious-minded about this. But she did wonder how the rest of the Scions were faring back home, or if her absence was not all that big of a deal. Eorzea would survive with or without her. Besides, it seemed that memories here could be a fickle thing for many. Those she did meet again may not recall her at all. [break][break]
Cassandra found herself wincing with empathy for the wounds Caius had sustained from this kraken. Oh, yes, she could recall her own similar experience with Leviathan. How many times had she nearly drowned because of that Primal? Oh, if only she had been given the Kojin's Blessing then. Breathing underwater made many of her fights easier, considering how often she nearly drowned from something. At least that was one form of dying she did not have to worry about! "Fighting in armor while near water is never a good recipe for battle. It can drag you down just as easily as it protects you. I tend to prefer reinforced leather myself. It offers decent protection while allowing for more mobility, but that is simply my preference." Her lips curled into a slight smile as she poured herself another drink. [break][break]
"But I am glad that you're doing well now. If you have any cloth or leather garments that need to be repaired, I know how to do those quite well. Being able to mend your own armor tends to be a must while traveling. Or if you have need of a cook while we wait for General Chere, I am happy to be of use."

The Dragonglaive
One who wouldn't accept failure unless they had to would fit in well, he was sure. So long as they kept their priorities in check and remembered their sense of honor in all of this, anyway. She admitted that she was stubborn and that got a laugh out of him. "I've heard that one before" he admitted. It seemed they were kindred spirits in that particular voyage. Caius was stubborn as could be, it was something that most if not all the Dragonblades knew. It was a defining trait for him. He did not have any sense of quit in him. Sometimes to his benefit. And also sometimes to his detriment.
Celes reminded her of someone she knew, which hopefully would make the transition easier on her. That was a relief. "Sounds like quite the person" he admitted with a small smile in turn. It sounded like Cassandra had this all figured out, then. This may very well come easy to her after all. Once she settled down on her own paranoia, anyway. The conversation though, soon turned to the Kraken. "It's not fun, but it's necessary. But I try to balance best I can in my armor" he brought up. "It's part jacket, part armor. Lightweight enough to keep me moving, but good enough to protect me. I used to wear reinforced leather, but I'm not the smallest man, and I'm dealing with far harder blows than I ever did in my old world."
Though her offer piqued his interest. "I appreciate that, thank you" he spoke up. "I can help with tempering and repairing your weaponry as well, I'm a weapon and armorsmith."
Though that last part...
"You're a cook?" he then inquired. "What kind? I think I do pretty okay behind a spit. Celes... I wouldn't recommend trying her cooking."

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Her lips quirked into an amused smile as Caius seemed to perk up at her latter mention of being a cook. It had her a long time to become as adept as she was now. Truthfully, she had been quite horrible when she had first started out. Even boiling water had been a difficult task as she had often left the water unattended for too long, which had left the pot to be scorched by the fire. The learning curve for her had been steep, but Cassandra was quite of the progress she had made over the years. She had even served the Sultana with her finest dish and Nanamo had proclaimed the best she had ever eaten. The memory of Lolorito's sheer scorn and dismay at her success would forever warm her heart and amuse her to no end. [break][break]
"I may have to look into something stronger, going by your own accounts. I prefer to fight at a distance, but such things cannot always be helped. Even barrier magic will break after a while and it is better to be protected than to die from your own hubris," she mused as she took another sip of her drink. Black Magic was destructive, powerful, and often hard to dodge. That did not make her invulnerable, though. This particular branch of magic was often a glass cannon at times, which was why she had supplemented it with her Red Magic to give her an advantage when she did have to be in close combat. Perhaps reinforced leather with some armor plating on top? Something light but it would still allow her the maneuverability she needed for her particular style. [break][break]
A weaponsmith? Now her own attention perked as she glanced down at her rapier. Cassandra had forged her blade through the trials of Eureka. She had yet to meet a better blacksmith than Gerolt, but she was willing to trust Caius in at least looking over her blade should the need arise. "I shall keep that in mind. My rapier has been altered quite a lot over my journey, so I hope it does not prove to be too much of a challenge if it does need repairs," she teased with an easy smile. The blade had truly been attuned to her and her own needs, so she had no wish or desire to ever utilize a new weapon. [break][break]
"In my world, we are called culinarians. I have trained quite extensively over the years in a few different areas of cooking that may be unique to my world. Truth be told, it took me a long time to gain the experience I have now. I could barely boil water or scramble eggs when I started. If you have a preference for seafood dishes, I've been told that those are my best ones." Doman food had to be favorite to prepare, cook, and then consume. There was something so unique about the Far Eastern dishes she had been exposed to during her journey through Doma.

The Dragonglaive
"I can take a look at your armor sometime, if that helps" Caius offered with a gentle smile. "But I'd be best off seeing how you fight and how you handle yourself on the field. Then I can grasp your style and get an idea of what might best suit you with what you'll be fighting. I'll cross-reference with Celes too when the time comes. I'm sure we can figure out what will work best for you. Your survival is kiiind of important, after all" he remarked with a laugh. "Reason I suggest her is she primarily uses magic herself, and she uses a type of armor that at first I thought was impractical. Leaves her exposed, was my first thought. But if you're fighting from a distance, she told me, you need to prioritize speed. So what she has is good enough to protect her, just long enough to let her gain the distance she needs to overwhelm her opponents with magic. It's not something I would have thought of at the time. So pooling our ideas together would be best."
It sounded like her weapon had been done up by a fair few blacksmiths. Caius didn't know if he had their skill, but at the least he could probably help her keep it maintenanced. She talked a bit about these culinarians, which sounded interesting. "I always enjoy meat and fish dishes, so I don't mind at all" he remarked. "But considering how used I am to just whatever rations I can get my hands on, anything you make will probably be fine."

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Cassandra slowly nodded her head in agreement with Caius' assessment. They could both speak and theorize about what armor would be best, but it was most easily decided when they saw what she could do in combat. Her own preferences were for speed over strength due to her own build, but she did tend to get up close and personal as a Red Mage. The rapier was not just for show as she knew how to wield it adeptly enough. Most of her fallbacks included casting her spells from a distance, but the maneuvers of the Red Mage also consisted of getting close to her opponent. "I do rely heavily upon my magic, but I also fight in close combat as well. I suppose it depends upon which class I'm relying upon at the time. Red Magic is certainly more versatile, but Black Magic can overwhelm my opponents with the strength of it." [break][break]
"But you are right. We shall both know better once you have seen my fighting style for yourselves. Red Magic will be my fallback since there is not much aether in this world to utilize my other spells for too long. I have no wish to drain this world if it can be helped. There is such a fragility here that it surprises me the world has sustained itself for this long." Cassandra was not nearly as attuned to the aether of the world as someone like Matoya or Y'sthola could be, but even she could sense that something was not quite right. It made her quite envious of Hades and the sheer amount of aether he contained within himself. Sustained spell-casting meant very little for him as he had recreated nearly all of his city just from his own aether over time. [break][break]
Cassandra wondered if she should seek him out once she was more settled here. It would be nice to see if he was doing well and to reassure him that she had not spoken of his presence to Alex. As always, she continued to feel that enigmatic pull even when he was not near her at all. "Protein is certainly important to keep your strength up. But there are ways to make rations more palatable. If you're amenable to allowing me use of your kitchen, I can make you a meal. Most dishes can be incredibly easy to make with the right ingredients and some patience!"

The Dragonglaive
Caius wished he could do more for the time being, but it would be impractical to do much sooner. They'd just be right back where they started once he got to see her in action. So it was best to wait, and they would just cover for her weaknesses in the meanwhile. Besides, if she was an experienced combatant, surely she could handle herself for a little while longer, right? He hoped so anyway. Cassandra seemed to be a nice sort, and he would hate to lose her to monsters or bandits or who knows what so soon. Or at all, really. She called herself a Red Mage, and Caius gave a familiar smile at that.
"Definitely need to talk to Celes, then. She calls herself a Red Mage as well" he revealed. "Sounds like you two will get along just fine. Going to make me a little envious" he joked. He doubted he would be, he was just teasing her to keep the mood light. Her anxiety was something that Caius could see clear as day and he really did want to do his best to help her feel at home here. It was his responsibility as a leader to do what was best for those he worked with. He didn't really understand all this stuff about the world sustaining itself on aether or something, but most likely it was something tied to her world, and he probably wouldn't understand it even if she explained.
"Feel free to use the kitchen as you see fit. Everyone here's free to it" Caius revealed. "So long as you don't try to poison anyone, you've got free reign. All we ask is to keep track of what ingredients you use, so we can replace them. If you use too much of a specific one, we may ask to help with replacing them, but we'll try to be reasonable. We've got a fair amount of people, so there's obviously some needed regulation there, but we do our best for the folks here."
