[attr="class","ayab-text"] Life never seemed to allow her a moment's peace without a price being attached to it. What had been the price this time? Cassandra had been out on a brief job to fight monsters outside of the city and she had returned to find Alexander's shop destroyed. And where was her illustrious mentor now? Most likely on the run somewhere as she did not feel the utmost concern to track him down again. Of course, Cassandra was worried for his wellbeing and how he was faring. But, well, she was tired of running across the world to save it from itself. At least for now. Perhaps the best thing for her was to set out on her own journey and see what happened. It was better than lingering in Provo and drowning in her usual laments over how her life was a mess. [break][break]
Cassandra would rather keep placing one foot in front of the other and remain hopeful as best as she could! Which had lead her to venture towards Torensten. A haven for adventurers to make a name for themselves and the fact that it resided by the sea was also a bonus. It reminded her of Limsa Lominsa very strongly as another pang of homesickness struck her. Eorzea was far from perfect but it was home. The only home she had known for nearly her entire life after all. Until she could learn a way back home for herself, then she would endeavor to make this world her new home. What else was there for her to do after all? [break][break]
A few well-placed questions had her learning of a company of mercenaries based here that took jobs to aid others. It reminded her of the Grand Companies each city-state held that acted as a military for their respective city-state. If that was the case, then she was sorely tempted in asking if they were after new members. Of course, Cassandra knew better than to ask to join blindly, but it was certainly worth the effort of seeking them out and seeing what doors could open. If only so she could earn some gil and not have to keep sleeping outside. As much as she was used to traveling across the land, the poor girl missed an actual bed with blankets.

The Dragonglaive
To say Caius was tired was an understatement. The Kraken had been enough, but now there were ceremonies, Vordun's existence getting out to the public in Torensten, and now this whole blind date thing coming up that he had been roped into. It was a lot. On top of that, he was now stuck in Torensten for a while. His armor was damaged and needed a fair bit of work to repair to be ready to go again, so that meant he hadn't been able to just slink off into the sunset instead of doing all these ceremonies and he had no excuses for the blind date thing. Great. But perhaps he did need the time off. Jessie had been adamant that Caius needed a better work-life balance, and while he wasn't sure if he could pull that off, he figured he might as well try.
He didn't know how, though. This was his thought as he worked the desk at the Wyvern's Rest, the current Dragonblades headquarters in Torensten. It was a small, two story building with a courtyard in the back. As the doors opened, Caius had nearly fallen asleep at the desk. Celes had stepped out and Caius had offered to fill in for her at the desk to help get this surge of paperwork finished in due time. Ever since he and Sabin had killed the Kraken, people had been filing membership requests and job requests like crazy. Their newfound popularity had come with some unexpected side effects and the realization that maybe, just maybe, Caius and Celes needed to hire someone to help out at the desk.
He still felt weird being out of his armor. But there he was. He looked like quite the sight, a 6'4 man with hair flowing past his shoulders sitting at a desk near the entrance, filling out forms. Wearing a red, collared shirt that had been crudely buttoned. He really did need to learn to do that properly.
When the doors opened though, Caius sat up straight, wiping the sleep from his eyes. He put on a gentle smile as he looked her up and down. Warrior build, he knew instantly. He had to wonder...
"Welcome to the Wyvern's Rest, can we help you with anything?"

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Cassandra was almost struck with a sense of deja vu as she entered the building to find a tall man sitting, hunched over a pile of paperwork that seemed endless. It was a similar sight that reminded her of Tataru taking care of such things back at the Rising Stones. There was no doubt in her mind that this man needed someone like Tataru to manage that paperwork with aplomb and cheer. She still had no idea how the Lalafellin woman did it, but she was the most effective secretary in all of Eorzea and beyond. Her expression shifted into one of amusement and sympathy as the man looked up at her with the most sleepy expression she had witnessed in awhile. [break][break]
"I think you could use the aid in getting a good night's rest," she greeted with a small laugh. But that sort of thing did not lead to a good first impression, so Cassandra sent him an apologetic look shortly after. "My name is Cassandra. No doubt you have certainly received an influx of people asking, but I am genuinely interested in seeing if you have any work available." Clasping her hands together, she smiled at him easily enough. It was still somewhat surreal to her that no one knew who she was in this world. All she happened to be was another face in a crowd of people. [break][break]
"There was a recent attack in Provo and it destroyed the shop I was helping to run with a friend. He has gone off to track down just exactly who destroyed the shop, but I was hoping for a little more permanence than chasing down rumors at present. I heard of the organization run here in Torensten and so I decided to travel here and test my luck." As much as she enjoyed traveling at times, Cassandra really would enjoy the opportunity for a sense of permanence for once. Even in this world, there was still a need for heroes or just an adventurer to help make things a little easier for others.

The Dragonglaive
"Caius. A pleasure to meet you, Cassandra" he introduced himself curtly as he rose to his full height, leaning over the desk to shake her hand. "General Chere and I run the operation here in Torensten."
Looking for work, she said? That did confirm she was likely a warrior, at least. But this could mean a lot of things. He should probably make sure he had proper context…
“To clarify things, just to be sure… We only supply jobs to members of the guild. Less paperwork that way” he brought up with a small laugh. Maybe this one wouldn’t bite his head off for jokes. Though if jokes ran this one off, he’d get his head bitten off anyway. Go figure, huh? "We are always accepting new members, though. Typically General Chere would handle orientation, but she's out right now, so if you're interested, I can do my best to walk you through it."
Celes was definitely far more used to this aspect of the job than he was. His role had always been to get them in the door. Looks like he was going to learn today. "If you have the time and are interested in hearing me out, please feel free to walk with me" he brought up as he stretched out while he exited from the desk. He cocked his head for her to follow as he walked into the next room over. It was a cushy little place, with tables strewn everywhere and a mini-kitchen and bar available for folks who wanted to cook for themselves or bring drinks. The centerpiece were two couches and a fireplace. Caius had drenched one of those couches not long ago after the Kraken battle, but the thing looked as dry as could be now.
"The Dragonblades wear a couple of hats. We're a mercenary unit that operates across Zephon, though we headquarter here in Torensten. We accept jobs from people all across the continent, usually targeted towards combat-based jobs. Escorting merchants, dealing with bandit problems on the roads when the guards are too busy, but most typically we're called in to deal with monsters. It's like every day that a monster's terrorizing something or other, and with the number of them, militaries across the continent can't always get to them in a timely manner. And the Dragonblades have begun to incur a reputation for taking on impossible jobs. You can either take jobs freelance, or we assign jobs to the board on the wall over there once Celes or myself have vetted it to make sure it fits our criteria" he began in earnest, motioning to the bulletin board on the wall, covered in notes about jobs the Dragonblades had been requested for. "Either way, a percentage of the job's pay goes to our coffers, though as you take bigger jobs, that percentage won't seem like much before long. You can keep anything you find during the job, as well. This system lets us help supply those who need them with equipment for their trips, weapon repairs, and other expenses. Most typically we cater that more to newcomers who are newer to fighting and aren't making big bank yet, but we'll help out whoever needs it. We're a brotherhood first and foremost, and we gotta help each other out. Our coffers also cover the Rest's expenses, giving those who need it a place to rest and sleep. There's a group of small sleeping rooms upstairs. Most of them are vacant, and can be taken by anyone to sleep in for the night if need be. Just try to clean up after yourself when you're up."
He was taking to this pretty well, actually. He knew the ins and out of the place well enough, despite hardly being around. He led her outside, to a courtyard with training equipment scattered around. "But while many come for the fame and the fortune, many of the Dragonblades, including General Chere and myself, have something we consider to be a duty of ours. The jobs we take, our goal is always to help people. If someone's desperately in need of help, we've never had a problem with helping them out pro bono here and there. We want to protect the people, and many who come here join with that in mind. When things happen across Zephon, and especially in Torensten, it seems to happen almost the time... The Dragonblades have always been there to lend our swords. You could say we're almost more like peacekeepers than mercenaries, in a way. Our role as peacekeepers and defenders always comes first. "
He considered if there was anything else... It would probably come to him before she left, hopefully, if he missed anything? "I apologize if that was a bit long-winded. My better half probably knows the less wordy variant, but..." he trailed off with a sheepish smile and a scratch of his head. Oh! That's right! He remembered now! "If you're still interested, typically we test recruits before they can join officially, typically we accompany them on a job to see how they handle. But General Chere is out, and after that whole Kraken business, I'm in no condition to fight right now."
A rather frustrating wrinkle for him.
"So for now... Why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself? That might help me figure out how to better work with you in the future if it comes to it, at least."
Best substitute he could think of right now.

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Cassandra leaned over as Caius did to shake his hand firmly as she smiled. General Chere? Another who helped to run the Dragonblades from his explanation. It did surprise her how quickly he welcomed her and began to explain the role his organization had and what it entailed. She could admit to herself she had not expected this meeting to go so well from the first. Internally, she sighed a little in relief at the thought that perhaps she could find a bit more stability within her life now. As much as she did love Alex, she knew trouble followed him like Fray did and that would be unlikely to change. She did still feel guilty for leaving him without an able person to cook, though. At some point she would have to go back and cook him a week's worth of meals so he would not starve! [break][break]
The joke he made had her smiling as she glanced over at the pile of paperwork that sat there. "You seem to have more than enough paperwork with members. I'd hate to see what it would look like for non-members." A response back to his humored statement, because she felt a little more at ease with such attempts. Cassandra had attended more than enough formal meetings for a lifetime, so being a little more informal like this was reassuring. As he stood to give her a tour of the building, she fell into step beside him as she listened avidly to his words. [break][break]
Cassandra found herself nodding as she considered his words quietly. Her earlier assumption that this was akin to a Grand Company had been correct enough and she did believe she could fit in here if given the chance to do so. There was no ulterior motive to gain notoriety and fame since she had gained enough of that back in her own world. If she could simply melt in with the masses here then she would be quite a happy woman. "I have little wish for fame or notoriety, I assure you. Such things are more of a hassle than they are worth most of the time." A weariness entered her eyes as she spoke from personal experience in that regard. [break][break]
His better half? Her head tilted to the side as she wondered if this General Chere and he were married for him to refer to her in such a way. Cassandra was almost tempted to ask but that would be too personal and somewhat rude of her. "No apology needed! Your explanation was thorough and detailed enough to let me know what the Dragonblades stand for." Her lips curled into a reassuring smile as he explained that new recruits were tested before giving official membership. It certainly made sense! There would be plenty of inexperienced people seeking fame and glory and it was best to test every person's resolve. [break][break]
"The world I come from is known as Hydaelyn. My home country is Eorzea and I became a seasoned enough adventurer over the years. I do admit I started out the way most young adults do: in search of excitement and notoriety. But, well, experience has a way of tempering that when you realize just how much danger it poses, but I do enjoy aiding others that need it." Cassandra hummed to herself as she considered what else to reveal about herself. "In terms of capability, I am more magically inclined than combatting in a straight physical fight. I've studied and become adept in Red and Black Magic over the years and I am a skilled Dancer as well. The latter in my world is famed for their support role than for sheer strength." [break][break]
Though it did have her wonder one thing! Alex had been here longer than she had, and she wondered if he had made an acquaintance of Caius during his stay here. "May I ask a question? The friend whose shop I mentioned earlier is named Alexander Sorel. I know this world is filled with so many plucked from their worlds, but I wonder if you may know him? He's usually the type to make himself known whether he wants to or not." The question was out of genuine curiosity and wondering if Alex had made a name for himself even as she knew he would prefer not to.

The Dragonglaive
"I have little wish for fame or notoriety, I assure you. Such things are more of a hassle than they are worth most of the time."
Caius looked to the stack of paperwork in the entrance hall. "I'm well aware" he remarked with a small laugh. Oh he had been learning that lesson recently, that's for sure. As far as better halves go, though... Caius was speaking in a more literal, business sense. Celes was his business partner, and the person he was most comfortable around in a fight. The two worked better together than Caius saw most work together. But "better half" was playfully referring to the fact that this was very much Celes' domain. He was just filling in. He hoped he'd cover things adequately, but knowing Celes, she'd figure out something he'd missed and set Cassandra straight. As for her misunderstanding, even if Caius knew what "better half" actually meant to most, which he did not, then he'd have been surprised that referring to her by her title and surname didn't tip off his meaning.
She seemed to think this was adequate though, so perhaps he'd done alright after all.
Caius navigated them back into the lounge area as he stepped behind the counter and began to mix drinks while she told her story. The least he could do was offer her a drink while she told, after all. Experience in adventuring, humility in knowing what she had once been and what she wanted to be now. But words could always be cheap.
But what interested him was her mention of Alex, and he smirked lightly at that. "I've met him, yes. He's an acquaintance of mine. I believe he's working with King Noctis right now. You know him, then?"

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] At least she was not the only one that viewed fame as more of a detriment than anything else. Cassandra could not say she regretted the path she had taken in her life, but she knew it was not a life she would have wished on anyone else. There were still many nights when she could not sleep properly and she still hesitated to take food offered by an unfamiliar hand. The latter reason was why she had striven to become a culinarian back on her world. That way she could ensure she would not be poisoned a third time and truly find out if the saying 'third time's the charm' held any truth to it. [break][break]
Once he had lead them back to the lounge, she became visibly uncomfortable once she noticed him beginning to mix drinks. This was one of those situations she enjoyed avoiding. Most found her irrational fear quite odd or annoying most of the time. What harm could a drink possibly hold? Cassandra sat down as she politely waited for him to finish making the drink as she struggled with the words to convey her discomfort. "I...do not mean to be rude, Caius. Would you humor me in taking a sip of the drink first?" Her cheeks flushed as she did her best not to fidget at how incredibly ridiculous her request sounded. [break][break]
Her brow furrowed at the mention of Alex working with Noctis. Oh, so Noctis was in this world as well? That was certainly good to know! She wondered if he had made it back home safely before departing from their world, or if Zephon was in fact his homeworld. "I've known Alex for years. He was my mentor for a long while and I met up with him not too long after arriving here. I was helping him run his shop before the attack in Provo. I'm also hoping to help him with a more steady income if I'm able to join your ranks. He...has no good sense when it comes to saving gil. He's likely to spend his gil on the first thing he sees just because he thinks it looks great," she answered with a fond smile. "But I didn't know he was working with Noctis. I'm unsure if he forgot to tell me or if this was a long while ago." [break][break]
But she did felt she owed him an explanation in regards to the drink he was offering her. Cassandra clasped her hands together as she continued to eye the drink with a slight mix of apprehension and weariness. "I'd like to assure you, I highly doubt you intend me harm, but I was poisoned twice when I accepted a drink from someone's hand but my own. It's left me rather wary of food and drink not prepared by my own hand."

The Dragonglaive
He laughed a bit at her question. He knew this tactic well. "I will, but next time, learn to recognize poison in the drink by smell, even when the drink is strong. I'll teach you sometime" he remarked as he knocked a bit of it back without hesitation. It was clear that he knew a thing or two about the same sort of fear. She had a good head on her shoulders. That was good. Maybe she'd survive when... Oh, right, he hadn't told her. He should probably do that.
He hadn't put his mouth on it, so he placed it down and slid the rest back to her. He also slid her the bottle. She could pour more if she wanted, he'd have no opportunity to poison her. So Alex had mentored her, then? He wondered if Alex made her paranoid. He was a bit of an eccentric, it wouldn't surprise him at all, really. So apparently his day job was running a shop, interesting... So she wanted to join their ranks to help fund this shop, after it was destroyed in the attack on Provo. Damnit Cloud.
She then decided to explain why she wanted to take these precautions. He laughed a bit at that. She didn't need to. "No worries. I've had my share of near-poisons. I'm the same way. But forgive me for laughing... It's just that while it's common to be poisoned, I've rarely heard of it happening to the same person twice."

"We'd burn every magnet and spring and spiral into the unknown."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] "That is a really good point. If you have the time, then I'd enjoy learning that," Cassandra replied with a relieved smile. Honestly, she should have learned a skill like that a long time ago. She did know some conjury back from her time spent with the guild in Gridania, but Esuna would hardly help if the poison was fast acting or she did not realize until it was too late. Paranoia had certainly gotten her this far in her life at least. At some point she did need to learn when to let things go, though. One day she would be able to eat and drink the food that others offered to her without fear. [break][break]
Her fingers slid around the glass as she sipped at the drink gingerly. A soft sigh of contentment escaped her as it relieved the dryness of her throat. "Thank you, Caius." He seemed to be a kind man and for that she genuinely was grateful. Everything seemed to be going well so far, and she hoped she would be able to prove herself worthy of joining their ranks. If not, then she would attempt her last gambit. But that was a very last resort as she nearly felt the business card she had been given burning a hole in her pocket. A part of her did wish to visit Emet-Selch again to see how he was faring but the visit would be awkward at best and tense at worse. [break][break]
"Oh, no, don't apologize for laughing. It sounds ridiculous even when I hear myself say it." Being poisoned twice seemed quite overkill for one person, but there were a lot of people in Eorzea that had wanted her dead. "It's...a very long story. No good deed goes unpunished, unfortunately," Cassandra answered with a tired smile. Perhaps one day she would be able to eat and drink without that irrational fear but that day was not this day.

The Dragonglaive
While her tactic would be fine with Caius, no bartender in the world would go without being completely, utterly offended by it. It wasn't subtle enough. While Caius' method wasn't super subtle, it worked well enough for its purpose. He was curious though, what in the world had this girl done to merit being poisoned twice? And why hadn't she taken proper precautions after the first time? Caius may be socially oblivious, but he knew better than to let something risk his life twice. He'd had too many near misses with poison in Eos to risk it.
"I'd be happy to help anytime. Especially useful if you end up joining our ranks" he brought up as he poured himself a glass. After so much talking he couldn't help but whet his tongue. At least he understood where she was coming from. Even here, he couldn't stop taking precautions. He didn't know if he'd ever feel safe enough to not check his drinks if they weren't ones he poured himself.
"No good deed goes unpunished" she said and he laughed a bit in turn. "Don't I know it" he remarked. He supposed now was as good a time as any. "Sooo... There's one teensy weensy little detail that I left out. See, we agreed there's a price to pay for fame... But when you do our line of work for long enough, you make your share of enemies too. And we've just so happened to pick up an enemy of our own" he admitted. "A bandit sect called the Original Sin. If you joined us, you would become a target. And they're not to be trifled with. They are underhanded and have their dirty little fingers all over Zephon. And after we dispatched the leader of their human trafficking operations, they're out for blood."
