The Dragonblades
He wanted her to know it was ok. He understood, he didn’t hold it against her and he’d be there when she returned. Hopefully that got across. Caius meanwhile didn’t seem to consider the intimate ramifications of what he’d said, but then again, when did he ever? He just knew what he thought and that was all there was to it. But what he did know was that the night had turned out better than he could have hoped, and he’d learned a lot in the process. He felt more… Comfortable, he supposed. With being able to express himself with her. More than he had with anyone else, come to think of it. Caius told stories, sure. He enjoyed telling them. And he would sometimes slip some blunt facts on how he was feeling in his - again - blunt, very, very matter of fact way. But in truth, he had always been closed off. Not comfortable with fully expressing himself as he had tonight. Being willing to make jokes on a dime and say what was on his mind without it being in any sort of strictly business form. There had been some signs of it with Yuna, who held the esteemed distinction of being the easiest person in the world to open up to. But not like this. And part of him, deep down, wasn’t sure how to handle this new sense of comfort. How many times now had he put his foot in his mouth when in contact with Celes? How many times had he unintentionally offended her and strained their relationship, time and time again? But at least he felt a bit more comfortable, and hopefully could be less clumsy in the future.
But it was getting late. And even something as wonderful as this had to end eventually. While it had only been a few hours, it felt like they’d been at this for close to a year now, so that probably said it was about time they got going. Especially if her attire was beginning to get cumbersome. He didn’t know what it was like to walk on half a stilt, considering his legs were already stilts as-is. And he was used to walking on his stilt legs. So he didn’t know, but if it was murder, it was murder.
He was surprised to hear she would want to dress up like this again, though. “They do look nice on you, so I suppose I can’t blame you. All of it does, really” he admitted with a light smirk as he jokingly looked her up and down as if appraising the attire. “I don’t know if I could say it suits you, because I’m so used to seeing you in combat attire at this point. But it… Compliments you well, I think.”
Look at Caius, figuring out compliments without gratifying it so much that it sounded overly intimate. Even managing to throw in some humor. What’s this? Actually being competent socially? What’s the catch? Where’s the part where he horribly offends her? Probably still to come.
“I… Guess wearing this shirt and jacket isn’t so bad. I feel… Exposed, I suppose is the word? But it’s nice to think there are times I can wear something that means I probably won’t have to fight that day” he at least could admit with a shrug of his shoulders. “Probably is the keyword here. I’m still half-expecting a giant octopus to pop out of the lake on our way back. But that might just be the Kraken nightmares I'm still having to this day.”
Had Celes told about her giant octopus when she had told him she had to sing opera once? Find out next time on Fin Post Z. So it came time for them to walk home. Or well, walk to the tram. While it had been pleasant, he was definitely looking forward to sitting down and resting for awhile on the tram. “Of course” he responded as he took one last glance at the flowers before beginning the walk back. Celes spoke up though, and he turned to her with a gentle smile.
“And you, as well. This has been wonderful” he responded in kind. “You achieved the impossible of making me not detest wearing this thing. I would say this has been a very productive evening.”
Good job Caius, following up with a joke so it didn’t sound weird. You’re learning.

[attr=class, bulk] Caius thought her outfit looked nice. From anyone else, it would have been a fine compliment, but she felt herself tense given the circumstances. Compliments were far more dangerous from men, and far more so from one with a confirmed and unrequited romantic attraction. But Caius didn’t take it that way. He simply said that it complimented her, and she felt herself struggle not to laugh at the sound of it.
She compromised on a short, undignified giggle. What a Caius thing to say.
”Well. Thank you.” She couldn’t stop herself from smiling. She wasn’t laughing at him exactly. It was almost a laugh of relief. Expecting the worst, bracing for it, and then…nothing. Nothing but something rather sweet, actually. She could swear he’d had almost a year’s worth of character growth in a single night.
”You don’t look so terrible yourself,” she added as he lamented his shirt and jacket. Part of her wanted to mock him for thinking that a restrictive jacket was so terrible while she was stuck breathing shallowly through a corset. Still, it wasn’t his fault that women’s fashion was an ever evolving method to torture its wearers, and she wouldn’t blame him for it personally. If she’d complained, he’d have accurately pointed out that no one had forced her into heels and a corset, and that he would have been just as happy to see her in her combat gear, actually.
She felt herself warm to him at the thought. It was nice, really. Knowing that someone would accept her for exactly who she was.
”Please don’t get me started on giant octopuses,” she said with a warning look. She wanted to groan, but she didn’t because that was far too specific a statement to not be looking for a reaction out of her. ”I’ve told you about Ultros, haven’t I? Oh well. I’ll tell you another time when I’m not so tired.” She didn’t need that pain and the pain in her feet. She was in an altogether good mood, all things considered, and she had no desire to ruin it for herself.
”Maybe we should make a thing of it. A…I don’t know, twice yearly thing? We can go out somewhere wearing something ridiculous expecting to fight nothing and just talk a while. I wouldn’t say no to that.”
So long as no one – absolutely no one – called it a date.
”That means I’ll have to come back too. Into the city again. Or maybe you’ll have to come to me. We can do Provo next time.” She smiled faintly to herself, looking up at the stars. ”Deal?”

The Dragonblades
To be fair, this had been the most restrictive thing he’d ever worn. Well, besides that weird thing he’d had to wear at that masquerade thing. Now that was awful and he would never wear something like that again if he could help it. “Thank you” he chirped in turn with a cheery smile, with no thoughts on the matter besides surface level. He didn’t know if it was just because he’d said such, or because he cleaned up nicely. But he’d take the compliment. He didn’t know why, but throughout much of this, he had felt like he was walking on air. Like this whole thing was a dreamscape and he could just take to the skies at any moment if he wished it. It felt like just that – a dream. A dream where he felt as happy and relaxed as could be, and like he could wake up at any moment and it would have all turned out to be too good to be true.
Perhaps it was a dangerous thought, that. But unlike his compatriot, he wasn’t well-versed in the risks of this kind of thinking. Still, he didn’t think too much into it. He was just happy to enjoy these things while they lasted. In what little time was left for it.
And yes, she was completely accurate in her assessment that he would have pointed out that she had subjected herself to said wear, and that he’d have been just as happy to see her in combat gear.
She lamented the existence of giant octopi, and Caius quirked a brow at that. “I think I recall mention of a name like that, but we can pick that up another time” he responded with a shrug, seeming fine to comply with her wishes for the time being. She seemed irked at the subject of the octopus enough that he had a feeling he’d be provided context before too long.
She sure had a lot of octopi in her life though. Just the Kraken was enough for him to have seen enough for one lifetime. Or so he’d like to hope. But when she brought up an idea, his quirked brow rose even further. Unlike before, even Caius could tell what was odd about this. She wanted to do this again? Or more accurately, as a more regular thing? That almost sounded like-
No, of course not. Of course that wasn’t her intention. She had made it clear earlier this last year, or that’s what it felt like. More accurately, it was earlier in the day. Sure, he had never actually said he had feelings for her in that way and she had simply misunderstood his clumsy attempts at date decorum. But she’d still made it clear that there was nothing of that sort between them and there never would be. They were friends, that was it. And she wanted to spend more time together as friends. With fancy, vulnerable garb. Like they had today. But with clear platonic boundaries. Get to know each other. Same way they had tonight. As friends. Yeah, made sense. Sort of.
Ok so now that we had that established and Caius had no thoughts at all that there was any intent other than platonic in mind... It was a little silly, wasn't it? Even Caius knew that. And if anyone else had asked, he might have laughed it off and said that casual or more practical attire would do fine. But if it was what Celes really wanted, well… It didn’t sound too bad, he supposed. Right? And he wouldn’t object to another opportunity to have a day like today.
“Only you could sell me on dressing like this more regularly” he admitted with a laugh. “You have a deal. We’ll do Provo next time. I haven’t had much chance to explore the city anyway. Could be a good opportunity all around.”

[attr=class, bulk] She didn’t know what she was suggesting, really. She didn’t know what had possessed her to suggest it, but it felt right in the moment and so she tried not to second guess herself. Caius laughed. She wasn’t sure if he was laughing at her or not until he went on. They had a deal. She felt herself redden slightly.
”Right,” she said and then, ”I don’t mean we have to dress like this. But maybe we can explore Provo. Go somewhere we wouldn’t usually. And I’ll wear earrings I wouldn’t be caught dead with in a fight.”
Now that she was thinking out loud, her own thoughts made more sense.
”It’s like you said. I like not being on guard. If we could have a day or two just to be…stupid...”
She laughed. She couldn’t help it. ”I think the champagne’s gone to my head.”
That must have been it.
The garden was as beautiful on the way out as it was on the way in. She thought that it must have looped around because she didn’t see anyone else going in their direction, and once they were out, she saw other people filtering from a different direction. Oh well. It gave her more reason to come back later by herself in a pair of sensible shoes.
She lingered awkwardly near the gondola. She wanted to leave, but…was she supposed to say something first?
”I suppose this is goodbye,” she said. ”Until tomorrow, I mean. There’s always work.”
Always.
”This was fun. I’ll see you later.”
Behind her, the gondolas creaked on their cables, moving constantly. There were plenty of free cars. She only had to take one.

"I’d like that” he spoke, smiling gently. “I’m sure I can stomach wearing this again when we’re in Provo, since you asked so nicely.”
Truthfully, they probably could have taken the gondola back together, seeing as they were going relatively the same way anyway. But Celes said this was goodbye, and Caius didn’t bother to raise the point. They had seen plenty of each other today, and topics of conversation had grown a little thin. He was ready to shut his eyes as soon as his head hit the backboard on the tram anyway, she didn’t need to see that.
Somewhere deep down, he wanted to say something cheesy. Maybe end on some kind of cheeky not-date humor. Maybe something assuring her that someone would one day consider her heart a true treasure. He may not be that person, or at least not the one she wanted it to be, but he understood that she had signed up for this stupid thing for a reason, and he wanted her to know he had faith that she’d find what she was looking for.
But nothing that came to mind seemed right. And that was ok. For once, he caught himself and understood that even something well-meaning could have unintended results. And besides, surely she knew that already, right? He had told her over and over again that he would support her in finding what she was looking for. And that he had all the faith in the world that she would succeed. Hopefully, that was enough.
“Yeah. Good night, Celes.”
It had been fun, hadn’t it? While he had been given much to think about, he had learned a lot about a good friend. That marked the night as much a success as it could get.
