Sometime after the morning calamity, it was the afternoon of her awakening in this new world. The Moogle belonged to Serah and promised to let Serah know she was awake, healthy. Followed bya contingency plan of where to find her. In the event that Claire wandered off, she knew she'd only go as far as the nearest city or town. Her mind wasn't entirely at ease, given she had to take Mog's word that Serah was fine. That she'd been taking care of her, what kind of big sister was she? A twelve year old had to do all the work upon being whisked away from their world?! Claire felt...miserable, not even a day of being given responsibility and she'd somehow messed things up.
Granted, her Mother wasn't gone just yet right? Some sort of...magic separated them. At least, that's all she could think of. Her memory was a mess and being kept in this cabin, made her feel like some sort of damsel. "A distressed damsel, perfect..." what an awful start but it could be worse. What if they'd appeared in a dangerous territory? Serah was smart, she wouldn't go too far if it was dangerous... Then again, she was strong too, a bit naive, prone to haphazard circumstances... No, Claire was just worrying and way too much at that. Mother told her to rely on Serah. While she didn't intend to share the burden with her, fate deemed Mother correct. A somber smile played on her lips.
Having stood about, largely walking back and forth inside the cozy cabin for some time. It was time to take a meaningful step in this strange, new world. Inhaling deeply, she'd open the door of the cabin and step outside. Early, she could pick up on the scent of farmlands amidst the oak and grass. Once she stepped outside, her senses were assaulted with it. "Successful farmlands aren't too far from a town or city." Claire speculated aloud now. She presumed to be alone, so she'd felt more comfortable voicing her thoughts. She walked about the perimeter of the cabin slowly. Already, she was regretting her attire a bit. She wasn't wearing the highest of heels but she certainly looked like a city girl. The sleeveless black sweater dress was paired with a white scarf. All because she was expecting friends to join her after her visit to the hospital, so they could work on a project for school.
Well, that was...one less thing to worry about. Now she could see a large cobblestone road out in the distance. Maybe that was the way to the farmlands or to a town. A simple dirt road veered off from it, leading into this simple field with scant trees guarding the cabin. The gentle breeze felt nice along her skin. Shame her nose didn't appreciate the scents carried with it. "Guess I should stay put and wait for Serah. If I've been out for as long as Mog says, then she knows more about this place than I do." Claire murmured before crossing her arms. At least she wasn't vexed anymore, more just perplexed. "What do we do about money now?"

After a silver-haired man had tipped him that someone would set the city on fire, and then had promptly been responsible for actually setting the city on fire, Caius had found himself set to the Provo area for a little while. Letters had to be sent, someone had to take over for them over in Torensten for a bit with Celes coming over here after the warning, and there was just so much to do with how much of the city had been leveled by the chaos. What in the world was Cloud thinking, engaging Sephiroth on a destructive scale in the middle of the city like that? The collateral damage he had caused was colossal, and had put so many people at risk. And it had created a lot of work for Caius and Celes, who weren't exactly getting paid to help with the relief effort. But it was their duty, they felt. So here they were.
Another problem was that with all the destruction in Provo, monsters had smelled blood and fear and had gotten a bit too close to Provo, becoming a threat to the city. It had become almost a daily routine for Caius to wander about outside of the city, keeping an eye out for any that might try to make an attack. The mercenary slash peacekeeper found himself on another one of those patrols this particular time, wandering just a little out past the outskirts when a peculiar little cottage caught his attention. He smiled slightly. He could appreciate that, living out in solitude a ways from the city. If he wasn't so busy, perhaps he'd have bought some farmland himself, started a new chocobo farm. But that was something he couldn't do, at least not right now. There was still too much to do at the moment.
But then something else caught his eye. Three Bomb monsters, growing in size, heading for the cabin...

Deep in her thoughts and unconsciously taking in the clean air. Claire had no idea of the imminent danger, floating closer and closer. "I could tutor kids..." she thought in passing, pacing about somewhat as she began to descend from the cabin and towards the cobblestone road. "Serah is pretty good at cooking, if we team up we could sell some goods---" distracted as she was, her eyes caught sight of something alarming. Not one, not two but three Bombs! Her eyes widened in fright as she took a compulsive step back.
"This place has Monsters too!?" surprisingly, her first thought was to Serah. Had she encountered monsters too?! If she ran out of panic, they might give chase. She just needed to back up slowly and think this through, logically. Farmlands wouldn't have monsters prowling about. That'd be bad for the crops and farm animals. The cabin showed no signs of external damage by means of monsters or grassland animals. Just a bit weathered, so this was normally a peaceful region. Serah was probably safe, which meant these Monsters were here due to an accident or maybe provoked.
Well, she couldn't lead them back to the cabin, that was 'home' for the time being. If she tried to lead them onto the main road, who knows maybe there would be some kind of patrol or community watch. Thus, she carefully veered to the side, hoping to catch their attention and keep it focused on her. Just long enough to get to some place more accessible. Besides, running on a dirt path in her shoes? She'd be better off chancing it with the cobblestone. Maybe she could even take them off and hurl them at two of the Bombs. Who said heels couldn't have their use outside of fashion?

"Oh, you have got to be..."
He didn't know where the kid came from, but a young lady had suddenly run up to the bombs and caught their attention. Was she trying to lead them away? Caius considered as to whether he could teleport in, grab the girl, and get her to safety before engaging the bombs and killing them. But perhaps she didn't want them exploding in the vicinity of that cabin? It was likely her cabin, if she was hanging out around here, he thought. Perhaps this whole area was her yard? Fair enough. He would not act in haste, he decided.
If he could have brought Vordun, this would be a cinch to get them into the air and detonate them safely. But he did not have that option. After the whole thing with the Kraken, Caius was left with little choice but to leave Vordun behind at home for a little while. The drake needed time to recover its strength after the strain that had been necessary for their survival in the aftermath of the Kraken's attack. Which meant that he was not going to have any support on this one. All he had to rely on were his own wits, which while daunting... He supposed he would have to work with it.
Eventually, the girl led the Bombs to the main road. Was this the plan then? Bring it to where they could be dealt with by a patrol, or at least away from where they'd be a problem when they detonate? They so commonly detonated even when defeated that it was best to always assume they would when fighting them. Having been tailing them from a distance, Caius picked now to strike.
Training his focus, he found himself warping forwards. Appearing above the head of one of the bombs, he used its big round head to bounce himself into the air. Using air control to keep himself afloat just a bit longer, Caius watched as the enraged Bomb and its compatriots would give chase. Imbuing his gunblade with Fire, he waited until just the right moment when the Bombs were close enough together...
The attack caused one of them to explode, the explosion causing the other two to explode as well. Caius free-fell through the sky before promptly materializing and throwing his dagger downwards. Focusing on it, he was able to warp just above the ground, before landing.
As soon as he hit the ground, he fell onto his back, short of breath. Way too close.

Most would say that the actions to follow, were just as planned. Caius' speculation proved true but for Claire, it was how spectacular the plan went off. The swiftness, the fluidity of his motions, the precision; culminating in a demonstration of finesse that left the teen in awe! Well, briefest of awe, why give Caius the satisfaction of her being impressed? He was just doing his job or so Claire reckoned.
"Are the patrols around here always so flashy?" she remarked before approaching the man. He was on his back, catching his breath seemingly. Claire reckoned there must be limits to sustaining that kind of speed and technique. She gently crouched down, keeping her knees together in the process. "I'm...looking for someone, my sister, actually. Has a pre-teen girl of twelve been seen on these roads, heading into town?" Claire wanted to ask him about his moves really but Serah came first. Seeing the man's competency, she was able to loosen up a bit.
Her eyes carefully looking him over, wanting to see if she could solve the mystery on her own. Maybe he utilized a special weapon or an item, perhaps? Her eyebrows briefly scrunched in scrutiny but after her assessment, she wasn't closer to figuring it out on her own. The least she could do, is try to take care of her saviour. Ah, right, as well as remember her manners... "Thanks for that." she began, using her right hand to gesture to where the Bombs once hovered. Being bait was better than being a damsel, in the short term. In the long term though, she'd prefer not to be helpless at all!
"Does it pay well? Patrolling these roads...?" if it did, then maybe this could be a way for her to support Serah and herself? It beat tutoring and would be a bit more stable than Serah and herself cooking and selling food goods. Briefly, she looked about the area, it didn't seem too bad, all things considered. Except the smell from the farmlands... Claire could live with this, likely Serah already was too. That was just the reality she had to accept. Being the one taken care of, instead of providing the care. Her sister was just good like that and more reliable than she wanted to give credit. That's why she loved her, even if she had a penchant for getting into trouble of her own making.

"Bold, but not a poorly thought out assumption that I'm part of an official patrol" Caius brought up between breaths. A kneejerk reaction, really. The blonde sat up and took a long breath once more to settle himself as he looked to the one who'd led the Bombs here. "That was dangerous, you know. For someone your age, especially. Leading monsters is too risky of a game without proper training. While I can appreciate getting them away from your property, it was still risky. If they'd decided to blow up prematurely should they have gotten too close, you'd have been history."
She asked him if he'd seen a pre-teen girl of twelve on these roads. After a moment of consideration, he shook his head. "I apologize, but I haven't. I think I'd have remembered hair like yours" he spoke softly with a bittersweet smile. He wished he could help further, he really did. But he knew full well he hadn't seen anyone like that. She asked if patrolling paid well, and that got a laugh out of him. "I'm not being paid for this. I'm not part of the guard" he admitted curtly. "My name is Caius. I'm part of the Dragonblades Mercenary Guild. We arrived to help provide relief after the recent disaster. I decided to patrol around a bit on my spare time, get some air. Make sure nothing hits the city when it's recovering" he explained. The last thing Caius wanted was for Provo to end up with another incident, especially so soon. The people needed time to settle back into their regular routines and get the economy running again if Provo was to continue to flourish. The least they could do was contribute a little bit to regaining that stability, in any way that they could.

Claire raised her left eyebrow pensively, upon mention of her assumption. She wasn't much one for coincidence, chance or so forth, so she'd always make the logical assumption when possible. Needless to say, this man had her attention, perhaps now more than ever with such an opening remark. She wanted to be angry or at the very least, annoyed but she didn't have it in her. After all, she knew it was reckless and while she'd like to say it was strictly for Serah's sake... That'd be a lie. Claire, didn't want to be a damsel, the thought of being so helpless and alone, it frightened her. Trying to do her best for Serah, just helped her to cope briefly, especially given the way she was dressed at the moment. It's not like she expected to be...wherever this was, earlier in the day. Nor did she feel like apologizing for being fashionable in this moment, given her circumstances.
Still, she found herself reluctantly smiling a bit when Caius mentioned he hadn't seen anyone matching Serah's description. It was a relief in some ways, as it meant that what she heard from Mog was true. Well, heard and saw more so... On the other hand, it meant she had to believe the impossible wholeheartedly. Serah, in this world at least, wasn't the loveable preteen she'd been looking out for. She was all grown up and more than reliable. Maybe it was a little selfish of her to want to cling onto something to 'protect', even if it was more so to avoid her own feelings. On the other hand, she now looked very remorseful, as well as a touch confused.
"Mr. Caius then, if you're not part of the official patrol and you're not getting paid... Are you really out here, playing hero?" she had to ask, it was the burning question on her mind for the moment.
"I don't mean to offend..." she spoke rather softly, eyes averting his gaze for a moment. "It's just a bit hard to believe. All of this is..." she continued before biting her bottom lip. Where would Claire begin? Well, she had his attention so she might as well just come clean with what was bothering her.
"I woke up some time ago in the morning, being tended to by a Moogle in a cabin not far from here. You...were right, I was trying to protect the that Cabin but... mostly, I didn't want to feel like a damsel in distress. I'm not even sure where this...is. The names you mentioned, I don't know any of them. That and my sister... I guess I have to accept that wherever this is, she's not the little girl I saw before I woke up. She's an adult and by putting myself in danger like that, I've just made unnecessary trouble for her, as well as Mog." that was as good a confession as any.
Turning on her heel for a moment, she looked out in the direction of Provo. Her expression crestfallen, as she tilted her head downwards a bit. "I guess I should go stay put and wait for her return, I don't want to be a burden..."

The Dragonglaive
He shrugged as she asked if he was out here playing hero, since he wasn't getting paid. "I was military before I came here. Call it force of habit. And after the disaster that just befell this place, the last thing I need to deal with is a monster attack on the city. Better to cut it off at the knees out here in the field, get it over with" he remarked offhandedly. Caius wasn't shy about his motivations, he didn't need to be. Things needed to be done, and he was in the right spot and had the time to get it down. And even if someone didn't believe him when he said he was doing it because he wanted what was best for people, well... What was good for Provo was good for business in Provo, and the Dragonblades had a business to expand on.
She explained her situation, and he gave a bittersweet smile in turn. "Ah. Offworlder. Like the rest of us. Welcome to the club, we have jackets... Or, it'd be nice if we had jackets, I guess. But we don't. Surprised nobody's tried selling offworlder club jackets yet though" he responded, quite casual considering she'd just told him that she just kind of woke up here and had no idea where she was or who anyone was. Though things got pretty complicated in her life in a hurry.
"I can't imagine something like that. Must be terrifying" he admitted softly, scratching his head. "I've heard of time and space being wonky here. People who knew each other coming from different points in time from each other. I served a King, once, in my own world. Got sent here, and turns out so did he... Except he's not the King I remember, and he doesn't even remember me. Talk about shocking. But your situation is... Definitely complicated."
Sheesh, was it. Caius hadn't had siblings since he had been younger than this girl probably was. But it'd definitely be weird if he showed up here much younger... And they much older. Not impossible to navigate, though. Or at least he would hope it wasn't.
"But... Everyone who's come here has had to adjust to something. I mean, I went from military to a mercenary. The crown I served is essentially gone and my King doesn't know who the hell I am. But that didn't mean I was just a burden... It just meant I had to find my own way to help out, if I wanted it badly enough" he brought up when it was clear the girl was having a confidence issue. He couldn't blame her, really. "I'm sure that despite the circumstances, your sister still loves you very much. And even if your method of helping has to change compared to before... I'm sure you can find your way without being a burden. Something I learned in my time here is... There's something for everybody here. Just gotta find it."

Caius had revealed many truths as he spoke, scarcely masking his strength of character. In the end, his banter raised Claire's spirits tremendously. She had a faint smile at first but by the time his speech concluded, she was beaming at him. "So, Mr. Caius, this really is a different world, huh? Incredible..." Claire was in awe but it made her excited, for destiny had changed completely.
"Honestly, I'm a little nervous, meeting a sister who is older than I am. I'm sure you're right at least... I just need to mentally prepare myself." so she began to pace a bit, only for such to be short lived when she turned her attention to Caius. "So... since you're not officially on patrol, would it be alright if I borrowed you for awhile? From what I remember in the morning, my sister should be on her way back to the Cabin. Could you... stay with me, just for a little while?" given Caius had thought her bold, going this far was just a natural, logical step, surely? No, she wasn't trying to cover up her own loneliness for the moment. Seeing how she'd been separated from Mog as it were...
"The best way to not be a burden, is to have some basic information. There's so much I want to ask you! Such as, the name of this world, the name of the city close by. How long you've been in this world, how many Offworlders you've met so far, and more." hopefully that seemed smooth and mature, as opposed to eager and desperate. Well, given she was lowering her guard; it wasn't a surprise that she was more eccentric now. Especially as she felt quite safe with Caius around.
"By the way, did you... forgive your King? I can only imagine how hard it was for you to see someone different but... That person, he's still your King, right? Just like... Serah, is still my sister, no matter her age." Claire had imagined herself in the shoes of Caius' King, while Serah was in Caius' shoes. Keeping an open mind would help but she felt that depending on the age gap, it might be best to make a distinction between herself as she was presently. Versus the future Claire Farron that her sister knew, though she hoped her future self had been good to her sister.

The Dragonglaive
Well she took being in a different world better than he'd expected. That was good. He nodded his head, as if confirming what she'd figured out. She was a mature girl for her age, she hadn't outwardly freaked out yet. It made sense with what he'd seen of her character, trying to take care of a monster problem herself. Trying not to be a burden. She seemed quite independent. No wonder her sister had left her here by herself. While it likely wasn't safe to take her to wherever she was going, at the very least she was able to take care of herself when left alone. Though even she needed to mentally prepare herself, which was understandable.
Though Caius was surprised when she asked to borrow him for a little while. He tilted his head at the request. She was a brave girl, he didn't think she'd want to rely on anyone while she waited for her sister. But she was still young. Perhaps she was easing up and letting herself show her fears instead of hiding them? Even just a little. Still, he didn't mind the offer. He smiled softly. "Of course" he responded. "I don't mind sticking around. The Dragonblades are posted around the city, they'll be able to handle themselves even if I'm not there."
One reason why she wanted him there came out fast. She had questions. Of course she did, it made sense. So this was a logical thing for her to do. Nicely done, he thought. He motioned for her to lead the way back to the cabin. "I don't think I caught your name, did I?" he inquired first. It'd be a lot easier if he knew what to call her. "The name of this continent at the very least, is Zephon. The city in the distance is Provo. The province itself is also called Provo. There's also the territories of Torensten, Sonora and the Reikin Sands, each with their own cultures and kinds of technology."
He combed his chin a bit in thought.
"I've been in this world... Two or three years? I've lost count. I travel a great deal as a mercenary and don't spend a whole lot of time in one place, so the offworlders I've met essentially number in the hundreds. Most of the Dragonblades are offworlders. Displaced folks like you and I, who had combat or healing-related jobs back home and now don't have a clear career path. And getting to help people with the nature of many of our jobs is always a reward in of itself."
She was clearly settled down and more open, which was good. He didn't want to be scary to the kid, after all. Then she asked a question that caused him to quirk a brow.
"I did. Technically he's not my King, though I still treat him with the same respect. It's difficult to explain, but... People I've met that share a world have been taken from different points in time from each other, and others... Well, others are taken from different variants of the same world completely. These variants have the same people, and a lot of the same history, but a lot different too. Sometimes one event that happened differently changes the rest after it. Some variants seem to pull more people to this world, as the King and his retinue have all been pulled, by the reports I've been getting, but... They're all from the same world variant. Others barely see any pull. That's me. None of them know me. Even people I've worked with don't recognize me."
Caius scratched his head. It was an awkward thing to talk about, but if it helped her understand, he'd bear it.
"So essentially, my King is not here. My King is back home, rebuilding Lucis. This King is not mine. He's Noctis, but not my King Noctis. This one mistook me for one of his father's men, and I didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise. As for me... Well... It's just me. As far as I know, the only one pulled from my variant... Was me. Essentially, I'm alone. I don't have anybody from my world to lean on. I had to navigate this world by myself, start over from nothing as if I never existed at all before this. It was rough, but... That's life here, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who wound up this way."
He managed a smile. "But I'm not entirely alone anymore. That man is still Noctis, even if he doesn't know me. And I have the Dragonblades. They are my unit, and they are my family now. So don't worry about this whole thing with Serah. It'll work itself out, and you'll find a life for yourselves here as well."
