The Dragonglaive
Caius knew full well what he was doing. Jessie figured he had learned, and she was absolutely right, he had. Just perhaps not in the way that the rebellious vixen had thought. The term "tactician" she had used earlier may very well apply. Caius was a man that applied combat tactics to every scenario that he could. At least, except for the ones that applied to Celes. There was no planning around Celes.
But Caius' interest was piqued the moment that Jessie said she worked on weaponry as well. Though unlike Caius, she focused more on firearms. "Oh really?" he chirped as he turned to stare at her. "I've done some work with firearms as well, though I don't specialize. I am pretty decent at weapon modification, though. I even designed the firearms attached to my weapons myself. I'd definitely love to hear a bit more about your expertise when we get a chance. Might even benefit my work" he brought up. Oh, he could talk about weapons and building them and modifying them all night, but he doubted she'd want that. "I'd love to work with you when you're ready to jump back into assembling things, of course."
Caius examined the ones she described as likely rarely used. "Hmm... Yes and no. Some of them are more decorative, I agree. Likely rarely ever saw battle. Others, if you look closely, you can see the work of a great level of maintenance to make it look like that. A blade is a warrior's pride and joy, and while the nicks tell a story of battle, many like to keep their weapon looking good if possible. Especially if the weapon is more flashy looking, as it's a symbol in battle. But if you know where to look..." he trailed off as he pointed to part of one of the more ceremonial looking blades. "The nicks are faded, but look right there. Even if they could get rid of them entirely, I doubt they would. But the best maintenancers will make it subtle. That's how you can tell they were a proud warrior, likely a front lines commander. They would have likely used the fancier looking weapons, to serve as a symbol from a distance, and only when you lock horns with them do you see the knicks and realize what you're dealing with. Some commanders I imagine would do that specifically for that reason. Make an enemy underestimate you and you've already won."
He looked to the ones she pointed out, the likely more powerful ones, and he nodded. "Likely more physically powerful, I agree. Flashier weapons tend to have less kick to them or are heavier than they should be. That's why the flashier looking ones typically are designed with another quirk in mind. Like this one right here, with the gaudy gold guard in the shape of a dragon's wings. Looks more like a symbolic weapon, but there's the knicks... And right there are the tips of the dragon's wings. Incredibly sharp. Maneuver it correctly and you can pierce an opponent with the guard. Catch them by surprise."
She wasn't wrong, exactly. There were simply details to add to the equation. Caius was only just learning these things himself, to be honest. Torensten's weapon history was more fascinating than he thought, even if he was likely just making guesses based off the weapons themselves.
Jessie inquired as to where to go next, since they were low on time. History on politics sounded boring, he agreed. "I wonder..." he trailed off, motioning for her to follow as he walked about at a quicker pace to match their lack of time. "Ah hah!" he chirped as they found a room full of miniature and larger exhibits based around Torensten's airships across their history. "I've always wanted to ride one of these, but haven't ever gotten around to it. How these even work, I still don't entirely understand."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie raised a curious eyebrow when Caius mentioned having done some work and modifications with firearms as well. That was interesting! She’d always assumed he was more into bladed weaponry. She really needed to study up and remember all of the skills she knew she used to possess and they could work together! Not for the first time since arriving in Zephon, Jessie regretted losing most of her memories. She’d been unwilling to try to recover them for so long. But with each day that passed, she became more and more certain she had to try. It didn’t matter how hard they might be to handle, she needed to regain that part of her life. [break][break]
“I need to get back into it,” she admitted presently to Caius. “I got lazy with my engineering and tinkering when I got so involved with the troupe.” She wiggled her fingers experimentally. “But I think I still have a lot of muscle memory. My hands seem to remember even if my brain doesn’t fully.” [break][break]
Caius then became very enthralled with her comments regarding the ceremonial weapons. Well, he certainly knew a lot more than she did! Especially about the blades. She listened with interest and peered at the blades he mentioned, especially the one with the golden dragon wing guard. “Wow,” she murmured. “I didn’t realize you could tell that much just by looking at the blades.” [break][break]
When she mentioned they had to make the most of their time Caius agreed and hurried off. Jessie stared around the room in awe. Of course she was no stranger to flying machines like planes and helicopters… but these were something else entirely. She wasn’t entirely convinced they didn’t just run on magic. They were so unlike anything she’d witnessed before. “I’ve flown on one to Provo once,” she commented as she moved to stand beside him. “But I definitely can’t say I have any more insight on how they work!” [break][break]
She walked around the room, peering at the miniature replicas. As they were looking through the room, a guard politely informed them that the museum would be closing up in about a half hour. Jessie thanked him and turned to Caius with a smile. “Not too much time left! Hey, isn’t there a little exhibit about the magic in this city?” The helpful guard clearly overheard her inquiry and pointed them onward past rows of statues carved in the likenesses of many of Torensten's old kings and officials. [break][break]
Ah! This exhibit was amazing! Tiny specialized crystals devoted to different magic were encased in shimmering glass cases. It wasn’t like the Plaisir de Magicka where you could actually use the magic, but the exhibit showcased the various magical powers that helped Torensten function. Jessie felt almost wistful as she looked around, thinking of her own substandard materia. It was all she had with her when she came to Zephon and she’d likely never be able to get more now! She was stuck with the few powers she had forever now. If only she had inherent magical aptitude. [break][break]
Struck by curiosity, Jessie turned her gaze to her companion. “You have some magic, right?”

The Dragonglaive
"We'll find a date for it, if you're interested in my joining you when you jump back in" Caius offered curtly with a soft smile. If she would have him, he'd be happy to help her find her tinkering footing once more. He was excited at the prospect of seeing what Jessie could do, and perhaps helping her out would help him review his own skills in the art as well. It never hurt to go back to basics and review what you knew so far, and potentially refine your game, after all. "Either way, I'm sure you'll find your footing before long. That sort of thing never leaves you. Not fully."
Perhaps he'd gotten a little carried away in his blade enthusiasm, but that was Caius! "You fight with them long enough, and work on them long enough, you learn to spot them pretty easily. It's just an experience thing" he admitted with a sheepish chuckle. They were running out of time though, so off they went to the next exhibit. Caius had heard of things like this existing in his world, and had even seen them up in the distance, but they were there for one reason only -- bringing daemons to the fray. He'd never rode one. And they always made him uncomfortable to look at. Not like these. These were beautifully crafted and Caius definitely wanted to give one a spin one day. Not that anything would beat Vordun, of course. Jessie admitted she'd flown on one to Provo once, and he looked to her with a curious eye. "I'll have to pick your brain on what it was like. I imagine the experience is a little different from flying atop a dragon."
As their time grew ever shorter, Jessie brought up the magic exhibit. Caius nodded his head in thanks to the helpful guard who pointed it out to them as they headed over. Caius didn't know much about the magic crystals that made the city work -- in fact, he didn't know much about the city at all. He was always on the move. Perhaps it was time he slowed down a little bit. Actually learned about the culture of what he was protecting. And it would surely aid in his work, wouldn't it?
Jessie asked about his magic. "Aye. Though it's a bit different from these. I wasn't born with magical prowess, I borrowed it from the crystal, via a link to the King of Lucis. Though without that link, I appear to have somehow managed to make that magic my own" Caius admitted, not really sure of how he had done it. But it was what it was. "I could be wrong, but did I see you use magic earlier when we were dealing with the monsters?"
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]“Definitely!” Jessie responded enthusiastically as Caius offered to help her rediscover her talent for engineering. “Learning is always better when there’s someone to bounce ideas off of and ask for advice. I’d appreciate it.” She wiggled her fingers. “I think my muscles will remember what to do.” As long as her hands hadn’t grown too soft and weak during her downtime! [break][break]
Caius lit up when she mentioned riding on one of the flying ships to Provo. “Oh yeah. It was… unique certainly. We had plenty of flying machines in my world, like planes and such. But I’d never ridden them, only seen them. They were mostly for the rich and powerful. And anyway, science kept them afloat. Not magic, like I assume is the case here.” She shrugged. She’d like to learn more, but she had no answers or insight right now. [break][break]
Jessie nodded as Caius explained how his magic worked. So, it really wasn’t too different from materia. Magic granted from an external source, not something you were born with. She nodded when he asked about her magic, he’d definitely seen her use Bolt in the fight with the monsters on the Pale Coast. By way of answer, she pulled up the sleeve of her dress to show the shimmering silver armguard she kept strapped to her upper arm. She pointed at the gleaming yellow, purple, and green material orbs there. “This is how magic works in Gaia,” she explained and pointed at each materia in turn. “The green one is how I can cast lightning spells.” She shrugged a little and let the sleeve fall back down. “The power comes from the planet itself, from what we call the lifestream. It powers pretty much my entire world. I’m also a little surprised that it works here away from Gaia.” [break][break]
The guard of this exhibit warned them that time was running out. She glanced over at Caius. “Well, I guess they’re about to kick us out. But this was so fun,” she said earnestly. “I’m probably about ready to go home and pass out until… probably tomorrow afternoon.” She emphasized that statement with a well-timed yawn as they left the museum.

The Dragonglaive
"Give it time and practice and I wager you'll be better than ever before" Caius encouraged her with a small, but slightly cheeky grin. The mercenary seemed to be coming out of his shell, just a little. "Personally, you've shown me that when you want something, you'll get it done. And when you believe in something enough, it'll happen. Your acting for example, all of that clearly took a lot of practice, a lot of choreography and a lot of hours. Not to mention a lot of passion. If you apply that same passion here, I have no doubt you'll more than succeed in getting back your old skillset. If I can play a small part in making that happen, it would be my honor."
Caius listened carefully as Jessie outlined these materia that she had with her. It was a similar logic to his own, magic granted from an external source. But still different from his own. With this materia, it seemed that anyone could use magic. But it was very specific magic. They were little orbs attached to one's equipment, imbuing them with their power. Interesting... It still amazed him just how many variants of magic he had discovered in this world -- both internal and external. "This world works in strange ways it seems, allowing us to do what most would think to be impossible" Caius mused aloud. "That materia could be useful if we get into a scrap and you have multiple ways to deal with a monster while I don't, though. What they lack in flexibility for what they can each do, they make up for in accessibility. Though I'm curious if there's ways to improve on the materia, just as I've been able to with my own powers."
But their time was up. They had been here that long already? Caius was almost a little sad to leave, and that their time together had felt so short and yet it was already over. But she was also surely exhausted after her performance. He knew he was tired just watching it. He laughed as Jessie indicated that very much she was exhausted and was ready to sleep for a week. And he couldn't blame her one bit for it. "Well... That wasn't so bad" Caius admitted, sheepishly scratching his head as they walked out. He wasn't good at these things. But she probably knew that by now. "I suppose I... Wouldn't mind doing something like that again sometime though. If you're up for it, I mean."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie beamed and blushed furiously at Caius’ praise. She was a confident woman, she knew that she was always striving to be the best at what she did. She put in the hard work, just as he’d said, to become skilled with her acting. But still, it was different to think that about yourself and to hear someone else praise you for it. It felt really good. “I hope I can live up to these lofty expectations!” [break][break]
She listened to Caius muse about her materia-given powers. She looked again at the glowing orbs and nodded thoughtfully. “I’m not sure,” she admitted in response to his question on if they could be improved. “Back home, they improved with use. But, well, I haven’t really gotten too many chances to use them here. So I’m not sure. It would be hard to tell, I think.” She shrugged. “But magic isn’t everything, clearly. There seem to be plenty of people here in Zephon with no magical powers at all and they’re getting along fine.” [break][break]
Her companion looked as disappointed as she felt as they were ushered out of the museum into the darkened streets of Torensten. “Not so bad?” she demanded with fake indignation. “I am a delight to be around.” She grinned and winked, making it obvious she was just teasing him. It was clear that the mercenary was very unused to these types of things. Was this a date? Was this a friends outing? Either way, it seemed like something he didn’t do a lot. [break][break]
“I certainly have a lot of free time coming up. I want to travel, to go on adventures. If you’re up for joining me on any of them, I’d be thrilled to have the company!” She glanced around at the mostly empty, dark streets. “I wouldn’t say no if you wanted to see me home to my apartment?” Of course she could handle herself. She was a capable woman. But it wouldn’t hurt to not be a young woman alone at night. And then she’d get to have company for just a little longer. “Then you’ll know where to find me to collect me before running off on some super exciting adventure without me,” she added.

The Dragonglaive
"I have no doubt you will" Caius teased right back without a single skip of a heartbeat, continuing to heap on praise. Except he meant it. He had every confidence that she'd pull it off. When it came to her materia, he nodded his head. "I agree, magic isn't everything. But maybe sometime we'll look into this materia of yours and figure out how you can best apply it. You have it, you might as well make the most of it. Another project for the pile" he remarked with a small laugh. It was a shame that their night had ended in what felt like so short of a time, but there would be more. If she wanted there to be more, anyway.
“Not so bad?” she demanded with fake indignation. “I am a delight to be around" she said and Caius laughed a bit more heartily at that. "I know" he responded in kind, seeming aware he was being teased. At the least he seemed to be getting used to it. He supposed he could say he'd enjoyed it. He didn't really know what to think about this whole thing. He hadn't really gone out on a trip meant purely for recreation since he was a child, to the point he'd almost completely forgotten what it was like. But he wouldn't mind doing it again either, he supposed.
"I'd be happy to accompany you if I find the opportunity. I can always come get you before I travel out for a job sometime too, if that works out for you" he brought up when Jessie reminded him about her coming free time. It seemed there indeed would be a next time. He wouldn't pretend he wasn't at least a little bit thrilled about the notion. Jessie asked about escorting her home, and he gently smiled in turn. "Of course. Lead the way" he responded as he let her lead them through the night. He doubted she'd have any trouble if someone stepped up, but he wouldn't say no to being in her company for a little bit longer. And it would be easier to remember where she lived for the sake of convenience, aye.
"Not every "adventure" I go on would be considered exciting, at least not by what you'd probably expect. But once you're freed up, I'll make sure to bring you along next time I set out" he promised as he stretched out a bit, taking a breath of the late-night seaside wind. It was nice here, though the heat could be a bit much at times. It wasn't that bad at night, though. It was nice, even.
Jessie agreed that the materia was a problem to sort out another day. Maybe if she encountered more people from Midgar they could work together to get this type of magic improving again. But if not, at least it still worked in some capacity. It was better than nothing at any rate. “This to-do list is getting quite large,” she commented with a grin. Well, maybe it would keep her busy! [break][break]
Caius readily agreed to walk her home. She really hadn’t expected him to say no, he was too nice to just let her roam off into the night alone after she asked! “Thanks,” she responded sincerely before turning towards the streets that led to her home in Torensten. The night air was beginning to chill from the heat of the day and she felt goosebumps raise on her bare arms. And her muscles were a bit sore from her busy day. Ahh, it was going to feel nice to curl up in her bed tonight. [break][break]
“Hey, everything has the potential to be exciting! And certainly more exciting than remaining stagnant here for too long. It’s far past time to travel. And I need to definitely make my way up to Sonora sometime soon. There are rumors of others from my home world up there.” She followed Caius’ example and stretched her arms above her head, then yawned. “I don’t know about you, but I’m going to sleep great tonight,” she commented, still half-yawning as she spoke. [break][break]
Before too long, they reached the small four-story apartment building that Jessie called home. It was quite pretty, with bright colored accents outside and surrounded by palm trees. It was a nice place to call home and she didn’t want to leave it forever. Her gaze trailed up to the window on the third floor she knew was hers. The window was open as she’d left it, purple curtains shifting in the night breeze. [break][break]
She pointed up to the window. “Well, that’s me. Unit 304. If you ever need to stop by, y’know?” Why was there a blush rising on her cheeks? Hopefully it was dark enough that her companion didn’t notice. Jessie didn’t do awkward. She was confident; this wasn’t like her. “It really was fun, I had a great time. And I’m so glad you were able to catch my play,” she said earnestly, still trying to ignore the heat on her face. “Good night, Caius.” Before she could think better of it, she stood on her tip toes and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. Then she stepped back, smiled, and fled into her apartment building.

The Dragonglaive
"That it is" Caius agreed with a small laugh. "Nothing wrong with that. Take it one step at a time. You'll get there in time. If I've learned anything, it's that life isn't a race" he remarked. A decade of fighting to survive would sure teach you that. But he had no doubts she'd get it eventually. He'd already made it clear what he thought of her as far as being the go-getter type was concerned.
Things had become far quieter than they had been when they had left the crowded and noisy theater what seemed like mere minutes ago. It was chilly, but he didn't quite mind. Torensten could get brutally hot during the day, and he had been wearing this suit the entire time, which hadn't exactly been great in the heat. As soon as he returned home, he wholly intended on yeeting this thing off and taking a shower. The cool breeze would make the walk back just a little bit more tolerable.
Caius laughed when Jessie insisted that anything had the potential to be exciting. She was right, of course. While he could not guarantee "fun" and "excitement" in the traditional sense, trouble seemed to follow him wherever he went. She likely wouldn't be bored. She then brought up Sonora. "Just be careful up there. I avoid the place like the plague unless deemed necessary, and for good reason" Caius brought up. He knew he couldn't stop her. But he could at least caution her. There was no stopping Jessie when she got going, that was pretty clear to him at this point. "At the least, I hope you find what you're looking for."
Before too long, they reached their destination. It seemed like a nice enough place. City life wasn't for him, but he could see the appeal of a place like this. "I'll keep that in mind. You'll see me sooner rather than later, probably" Caius responded with a small laugh as he turned to her. It was time to say their goodbyes, huh? Not noticing the redness of her cheeks, Caius responded to her words with a gentle smile. "It was a great play, I'm glad I could catch it. I'll see about catching the next one that I can" he answered curtly. "Good ni-"
His response was cut off by the following action, stopping Caius in his tracks. His eyes widened at the contact, as every alarm bell possible began to go off in his head. "Ah-ah... I uh..." he stammered awkwardly, but he wasn't able to form any words before Jessie disappeared into her apartment building.
There were a lot of thoughts and emotions running high here, and Caius wasn't sure if he understood them all right away. The mercenary loosed a long exhale as he placed a hand on his cheek. His face had taken a scarcely seen shade of red for its own. He could feel the heat, but hopefully the dark of the night would cover that.
