“We’ll be doing a play called The Sea of Stars next week in Torensten. Every day near sunset in the Port District. It’s a star-crossed romance plot but with a twist. It’s more interesting than your average play, I promise. I really love it. Brinia wrote it, she’s our troupe leader. And she just knows how to craft a compelling story.”
Quite a sales pitch she had made. Caius had promised to go out to see it, and he had ensured he was there on time on the opening day. Celes had been surprised to find when she returned to Torensten that Caius had not in fact set off as soon as she was back as he would have in the past. Something was keeping him in Torensten, and the answer lay in what he saw here tonight. The mercenary had his wanderlust, had his desire for adventure, the open air and all the thrills that came with it. But he also kept his promises.
A play sounded fancy. Possibly a formal dress code affair? A big public gathering for a performance sounded fancy enough to merit it. So he had shown up in a blue collared, buttoned shirt overlapped by a black suit jacket. While he wore work boots under the pants seeing as there weren't many formal shoes that fit him comfortably, he hoped that it wouldn't be too noticeable. Caius abhorred dressing like this. If he was going to layer up, it should at least be something with armor that could protect him if it broke out into a fight. And he'd probably need to ditch the jacket if a fight broke out... It was a bit restricting. But hopefully it wouldn't come to that. He had even taken his long blonde locks and tied them back neatly. A bit of an effort to learn to do on his own without Relm or Celes around, but he'd pulled it off. Normally he wouldn't willingly do this, he'd only worn this once, at the Masquerade for a work assignment. But this was something he'd promised to do and that was just as important.
But imagine his surprise when he showed up and realized that just about nobody else was dressed like this.
Good to know for next time, he supposed.
As vexing as that had been, the play had been well worth the hassle. Jessie had performed convincingly, and it was like a live rendition of... Hmm... Something. Something something from a very long time ago. His childhood years were fuzzy to him now, but he recalled seeing performances, acted out things, on some kind of screen. It made Caius a little bit nostalgic to say the least. The whole thing had been quite the spectacle, and he had to admit he enjoyed it. It was like one of those books he'd read in order to study up on culture, but acted out on stage.
The time seemed to fly by. Jessie had acted her part wonderfully and he'd have to give her his compliments when he saw her. Remembering she had requested he come find her after the show, he made a note to do so as the final curtain call was drawn. The intense throes of clapping from the audience made Caius flinch and shudder from all the noise and the realization of just how many people had been around him, but he did his best to look small and fit in as he clapped along. He got out of there as soon as he could.
They hadn't made specific plans of where to meet up or even when considering he hadn't had a ticket for a specific day yet when he had seen her last, so he had to improvise. He'd been able to locate where some of the people he had recognized as actors from the show were leaving from, so he had warped atop a nearby rooftop and waited out of sight. Surely the lot of them wanted to get home in a hurry after that exhausting performance, he didn't want to be in the way. He also just didn't like the idea of being in crowds the whole time. Caius never did like crowds. Finally, a figure he recognized stepped out. Caius took a deep breath as he pinpointed a spot before disappearing once more.
Caius stepped out once he was back on level ground, doing his best to make it look like he had just turned a corner or something as he hailed Jessie with a wave.
"Quite the performance. Was surprised I didn't actually see any stars in the sea though" he joked with a small smile. He looked a fair bit different from the man that she'd met at the Pale Coast not too long ago, but hopefully it wouldn't scare her at all.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]This was one of the final nights for the Sea of Stars before Brinia’s Troupe moved onto new material. Jessie knew the play by heart by this point. She played the lead, Princess Sarai von Tranburgh, the fiercely independent heir to a kingdom embroiled in endless war. Princess Sarai rode off to war against the wishes of the king and queen to fight alongside the soldiers. The bulk of the play concerned the war and Sarai’s star-crossed romance with an enemy sailor. Eventually, the two leads brought about the end of the conflict by summoning one of the Great Old Gods, Leviathan. Sarai was meant to return home and take her place as queen, but she abdicated instead, following her lover out across the sea into unknown territories, guided and protected by Leviathan. It was a fun play with an ending she loved. It wasn’t necessarily traditional, but it was happy and hopeful. [break][break] The play ended with a magically-created mural of the sea shimmering across the stage as the two leads departed the stage. The applause was deafening as the play concluded and Jessie beamed. The post-performance high was always the best. It filled her with excitement and exhilaration. But there was a twinge of sadness. She hadn’t noticed Caius in the crowd again. He’d promised to come to one of her shows, but perhaps he’d found himself too busy. Or maybe he’d just forgotten. Oh well. [break][break] As the audience departed, Jessie bade farewell to her fellow actors. She slipped briefly into one of the troupe wagons to change out of her velvety costume gown and into a simpler outfit. It was a hot, muggy night in Torensten so she had grabbed a blue-and-white cotton dress that was soft and cool in the heat of the city. When she stepped back outside, the soft breeze on her arms and legs felt soothing after the restrictive outfit she’d been wearing. Her hair was unbound and loose around her shoulders after she’d pulled off her wig. [break][break] Jessie headed for familiar streets towards her apartment. But suddenly, someone stepped into her path and she started. The man waved and she jolted with recognition. Caius? She hadn’t recognized him at first! He had dressed up, which she found positively endearing. His long blonde hair was pulled back from his neck as well. It wasn’t like he looked that much different, but the changes were enough to give her pause at first. [break][break] Jessie grinned and waved back, quickening her pace to stand in front of him. Any sadness she’d felt earlier evaporated immediately. He hadn’t forgotten, clearly. “Thanks,” she said, feeling uncharacteristically shy when he complimented the play. “I’m glad you came to see it.” She elbowed him good-naturedly when he joked about there being no actual stars in the sea. “It’s a metaphor you dope.” But she smiled up at him regardless. [break][break] “You clean up well,” she commented on his dressy attire. “I almost didn’t recognize you!” Then her stomach growled, interrupting their conversation. She laughed at it and smiled sheepishly at him. “Hey, I’m actually kind of starving. Would you want to grab some food with me?” That wasn’t too forward, was it?

Showing up on the last day of it hadn't been his plan. But even he hadn't expected them to sell out so quick! He had been almost tempted to try and sneak onto one of the roofs to spectate from a distance if he needed to if the worst came to worst, but he had been able to get a ticket in the end. He didn't know if Jessie had remembered his promise to show up at this point, but still better late than never.
Being a combat story along with romance had certainly piqued Caius' interest. Perhaps that had been part of why he enjoyed it so much? Action and drama, fighting against something that seemed impossible. And the ending was sweet enough. Choosing love over political power, one's loyalty over heritage. It was... Interesting, seeing a depiction of Leviathan, considering they had been looked at as one of the Astrals, the very gods themselves where he had come from. But he had still enjoyed it nonetheless.
His appearance seemed to startle her, and he scratched his head sheepishly at her reaction. Even Caius didn't recognize himself looking in the mirror before he had left, so he supposed he wasn't that surprised. He smiled when she spoke up. "I said I would. I apologize for not getting to see it sooner. I hadn't realized how difficult acquiring a seat would be" he admitted. "This thing is popular. Someone nearly bowled me over in line when they started selling out. I had this big plan to show up first night, but... Well, this was a learning experience for next time" Caius brought up with a small smile. Yeah he was... Definitely going to have to show up earlier next time.
He laughed when she reminded him that the stars in the sea thing was a play. He was definitely not looking to the sea for stars part of the time before realizing that fact himself. Nope. Caius definitely did not take half of the things people said very literally.
She seemed uncharacteristically sheepish at the compliments, a far cry from the well of confidence he had met before. It was actually kind of adorable.
She complimented his attire, and he laughed a bit sheepishly. "Thank you" he responded, fidgeting his fingers a bit anxiously. He supposed if she was happy about it, it was worth it to get all dolled up like this after all. But it was made clear very quickly that she had worked up an appetite, and she suggested the idea of going out to eat. He laughed a bit in turn. "I was going to offer anyway. Figured you might want to celebrate your big night. Why don't you pick a place and we'll head over? I'm free for the night."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Caius was apologetic about not making it to an earlier show. She waved off his concerns with a shrug. “Hey, it’s fine! I didn’t realize how popular it would be either. I guess since Brinia was marketing it as the last showing ever people got scared they’d never be able to see it again.” She chuckled. “They haven’t caught on yet that she does this with every show. But she always brings them back eventually.” The troupe leader Brinia sure knew how to get attendance up for the shows with her ploys. Jessie knew that in a few months or years The Sea of Stars would be brought back by popular demand! And the cycle would start anew. [break][break] “I’m really glad you made it, though,” she said earnestly with a warm smile. It truly had brightened her day to see him waiting for her. “You really liked it?” Had she been wrong to suggest this play? Would he have preferred a different show? [break][break] He said he was free for the night and had already been planning on suggesting dinner. She beamed. “Great!” Where to go, though? She squinted her eyes a bit, concentrating and thinking. She could tell that Caius wasn’t exactly enjoying being out in all these crowds. He was a little fidgety and anxious. And he’d already so graciously endured the crowd for the sake of the performance. She immediately decided that a crowded and rowdy bar or tavern was definitely not his scene.[break][break] “Hmm. There’s somewhere a little quieter that I have in mind. It’s a few streets away, if you don’t mind walking?” The place she’d decided upon was a quiet little cafe and bakery nestled away in between apartment buildings and townhouses on a peaceful street away from the hustle and bustle of the main districts. “It’s called the Misty Moon Cafe. They have really great coffee and pastries. But they have dinner food too. I used to live right above it so I ate there nearly every day. It’s been a long time since I’ve had it ever since I moved,” she rambled as they walked. Just the thought of a Misty Moon famous latte made her mouth water. She wondered what their food specialties were today. In the past they’d changed pretty often but there was always something delicious. [break][break] “How long do you plan on being in town for?” she asked, glancing up at him. “And where does Vordun go off to when you’re here?” She wouldn’t mind seeing the dragon again, and maybe going on another ride over the forests surrounding Torensten.

He let out a hearty laugh when Jessie revealed the play that ensured a healthy audience for each show. "Sounds like even playwrights have tricks to their trade. Remind me not to mess with Miss Brinia" he joked as he pondered a moment on what other creative means Jessie's boss played to the industry. It seemed that every occupation had their own tricks for success, not just mercenaries.
She really had done well with her performance, it was no surprise he had liked it. "I did. The whole thing looks fun. Don't know if I could see myself doing it, though, but it's impressive you're able to do it so skillfully. Your ability to suspend disbelief is uncanny, the whole lot of you really" Caius admitted, musing on the performance and really, the entire performance art that he just had witnessed, in some ways for the first time. It was not his first performance in his life, but really... This was a new life altogether for him, wasn't it? He had few memories of his childhood, and even back then, he hadn't put this level of thought into the art behind things. He smiled cheekily. "Especially you. You may well have been the belle of the ball" he teased. But Caius didn't tell her anything that he would have considered lies. Jessie could suspend reality with her words and actions but Caius was blunt as a hammer. He really did mean it, she'd stood out. But perhaps that was because his gaze had been transfixed upon her throughout. She had been who he had come to see, after all. So maybe he was just a little biased.
The question came of where to go, which Caius had left to Jessie. While Caius could handle taverns, they weren't his most comfortable spot. He went when it was necessary, but tonight was meant to be a leisure night. Jessie appeared to pick up on his apprehension around crowds, though, and picked a quiet coffee and pastry place. At the sound of "quieter" he perked up. Perfect. "I don't mind at all" he responded, pepping up a bit more cheer in his voice. He would have gone wherever she liked, but he did like the sound of that. It sounded like she was familiar with the place too, and could attest to its quality. Even better.
The walk quickly made him realize he was hungry himself. Well, it was good they were heading off for food, wasn't it? Jessie asked how long he'd be in town for though, as well as where Vordun went when he was in town. "A few days. I'm intending to head out to Provo and check on how business is going over there. You're free to join me if you wish, if it doesn't interfere with your rehearsal schedule. Just keep in mind my trips aren't always short and sometimes they can get a little unpredictable. If your schedule is tight, I can always contact you when I'm on a job that's more likely a bit quicker. You might be spending a bit more time with me than you would like otherwise" he answered, smirking lightly at the last part. He wouldn't mind the company, but with her having a job here, he knew he needed to consider that. As far as Vordun went though... He thought a moment on how to answer. While Jessie had shown herself trustworthy so far, it was still something he didn't tend to talk about much. Especially when he still didn't know her well. Perhaps one day that would change, but perhaps for now, he could meet her halfway.
"Vordun and I live in solitude. As convenient as living here would be, it hasn't been possible ever since he got too big to pass off as another animal" he admitted. "Maybe sometime I'll bring you around."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie laughed appreciatively at Caius’ remarks about messing with Brinia. “She certainly knows what she’s doing,” she agreed. The troupe leader had always been a whip-smart business woman on top of being a creative genius. No, certainly not a good idea to get on her bad side! [break][break] As Caius praised her performance again, Jessie felt her cheeks flush and she grinned. She was positively glowing under the compliments. It always felt good to have her hard work and effort be noticed and appreciated, especially by someone she respected as much as Caius. She might not be the best at everything, but there were certain things she could do well. It felt good to be recognized. “Aww, thanks! I’m really glad you liked it!” she said, still smiling. She’d never been one to deny compliments or try to argue against them.[break][break] The mercenary grew visibly more relaxed when Jessie mentioned a quieter spot for them to get dinner. She inwardly praised herself for reading his moods and preferences so well. He’d love the Misty Moon Cafe, she was sure of it. How could anyone not? [break][break] As they walked together to the cafe, Jessie felt a peaceful type of happiness. It just felt nice to be with another person, someone she truly liked. Jessie realized how deeply she’d been missing companionship and friendship recently. Sure, she was friendly with some of the other members of her troupe but she wasn’t really close with any of them. And maybe she had a tiny bit of a crush on Caius too, but more than that she just wanted him as a friend. [break][break] He suggested that she could head to Provo with him to check on business out there. Dragonblade business, she assumed. “Ah, I wish I could,” she said regretfully. “But I don’t think I can get away right now. We have this one-off play coming up that I can’t miss. After that, I’m taking a sabbatical. Let some of the other actors get the lead roles for a bit,” she added with a wink and a cheeky grin. “So I’ll be free for a long time then. You can contact me whenever, I’ll certainly be up for some adventuring. I’m not entirely sure when I’ll get back into the acting scene after that. We’ll see.” [break][break] He seemed to pause when she asked about Vordun. Was he deciding how much to tell her? His eventual response was vague but that was fine. She didn’t need specifics, she was just curious. “Yeah. I bet some of the townspeople wouldn’t exactly understand a dragon living in the city,” she agreed. “But if you’ll have me, I’d love to see him again sometime.” [break][break] They had arrived at their destination while talking. The little row of cramped apartments and townhomes where Jessie used to live came into view. Everything was quaint and brightly colored and much quieter as compared to the bustling squares and markets. She kind of missed this side of Torensten! The Misty Moon Cafe was marked by a big blue awning emblazoned with the name and a logo of a crescent moon. Metal tables and chairs were situated outside and there were very few other patrons. “Here we are!” Jessie proclaimed, speeding up a little with an easy grin on her face. “I’ll grab us a table. You fine sitting outside?” There was a perfect little two-seated on the edge of the patio that she pointed them towards.

The Dragonglaive

Clearly she did, considering how well put together this whole thing had been, and how popular it was. It took either a really intelligent business person, a lot of luck, or sometimes both to make something work in any business. And it seemed that Jessie's boss was just fine in all of those departments, ticked all the boxes at that.
Jessie glowed under his words, and that in of itself got a smile out of him. It was kind of cute, but he also just liked seeing her retain her humility. With all the attention she'd been getting, most people in her position would let it get into their head, and come to expect those kinds of words. Jessie was not one of those people, and he appreciated that. Hopefully she never lost herself. It'd make sure she always kept trying to get better. And she'd be happier that way, probably.
As they walked through the night, Caius himself found himself relaxing just a little. With all that had happened as of late in his business and personal life, perhaps deep down he knew that he needed a night like this. No stress, no business, no issues... Just two people hanging out and talking. It was nice, really. And perhaps something he knew that he was missing. His hesitation when it came to Vordun was not a slight on Jessie. Actually, he liked Jessie. He liked her a lot, even. He had quickly come to find a kinship with her that made him appreciate her company all the more. But old habits die hard. This was the way he had grown up, and been forced to be like. And yet, Caius couldn't hide just a little bit of disappointment when Jessie admitted she couldn't accompany him. Perhaps he truly had grown to enjoy her company, more than perhaps even he would like to admit? He spent so much time working, fighting, travelling... It wasn't until these moments where he started to slowly realize just how tired he really was and how important nights like these were. And with company he enjoyed, it made taking the time out all the more worth it.
Perhaps before too long, she would find herself visiting the homestead.
But any signs of disappointment faded when she brought up her plans for a sabbatical, and offered to accompany him next time once she had done so. He laughed a bit. "Get me a date for it before I go, and I'll try to be back in time for it if I can buy a ticket before they're sold out... Again" he cheeked. "And if you want me to, I'll come pick you up before my next expedition" he brought up. "Vordun typically goes with me, so you'll get a chance to see him again then."
Something he was sure she'd look forward to, almost as much as he looked forward to the trip.
Caius visibly relaxed when the amount of people thinned out as they made their way to their destination. While crowds didn't bother Caius much at the Wyvern's Rest, it was crowds of strangers that always bothered him. As things settled a bit, so did he. Jessie offered to get them a table, and he nodded his head. When she asked if he was okay sitting outside, he smiled. "I don't mind."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie grinned at Caius when he mentioned getting tickets to her next play, the reproduction of The Lament of the Faerie Queen. “I actually don’t think there will be tickets for that one! It’s like a big reproduction of a historical play so you’ll just have to get there early enough to find a place to sit or stand. Brinia wanted everyone to be able to come to it, not just people with the means to afford tickets, y’know? So in other words, you have no excuse,” she added a jaunty wink.[break][break] Jessie’s mind wandered away on a daydream when Caius mentioned taking her on his next expedition. She imagined soaring through the sky on dragonback again, of exploring new and exciting places throughout Zephon. Maybe of finding more about herself. And the thought of going with Caius filled her with a surprising amount of warmth. [break][break] The Misty Moon Cafe had clearly been a good choice on her part. Her companion seemed to visibly relax when he saw the calm and relaxed environment around the cafe. She drifted to the small table she’d pointed out for them and sat down on the hard metal chair. She was about to start talking again, to ask Caius where in the world he might head off to next, but a server interrupted before she could. [break][break] The young man wore an apron bearing a stitched crescent moon. He was friendly when he asked for their drink orders and didn’t linger too long. Jessie, of course, ordered one of the famous lattes. It had been far too long since she’d had one and the craving was dire. She glanced at the fairly short food menu on the table. It looked like it had been updated since she’d last been here but she saw her old standby was still there. Grilled cheese with caramelized onions and apples. Yep. There was no decision process needed here, so she passed it over to Caius. [break][break] But she couldn’t stop chattering even as she tried to give him time to read the menu. “So, where do you think you might be going next? I’ve really not been far outside of the Torensten area. Just to Provo once or twice. But there’s so much else out there!” Their drinks arrived as she was musing about all the strange lands she’d heard about in Zephon and Jessie was immediately silenced as she took a long drink of her perfectly swirled latte. She sighed in delight at the taste of the caffeinated beverage. “I never should have stopped coming here. You’ll love the food too, I promise!”

The Dragonglaive
This was nice, wasn’t it? Caius didn’t have many opportunities to just sit down and have a nice chat over a bite to eat. He had been go-go-go for what felt like his entire life at this point. Not that he regretted it, considering the circumstances. Back home it had first meant survival. Then it became about paying back a Lucis kingdom that has picked him up and given him purpose even after he had caused hurt, to some way make up for what he had done. Here in Zephon… He just didn’t know anything else really. At least not at first, though in a way it was still that, wasn’t it? But what had been on his mind for the last few years was the Dragonblades — it really had been a few years now, hadn’t it? But all he had thought of was growing their influence and getting their name out. Helping people best he could while also doing his best to provide for those that fought alongside him. He rarely thought of much else, and that purpose had kept him busy. Perhaps a bit too busy. But the truth of the matter was that Caius didn’t know how to settle down long enough to do things like this often. But they were nice when he did, he at least knew that. And Jessie’s company was enjoyable to boot, which made it all the better.
The duo were soon seated and Caius mulled over the menu when it was handed to him. There weren’t many dishes but he wasn’t sure what to order honestly. His restaurant experience was far too sparse to know what most of this was. He saw something with grilled cheese and he at least knew what that was, but he’d sneak in a “what do you recommend?” to Jessie, who had already ordered, before she spoke up.
“Provo. We don’t have a branch out there, so it’s up to me to get our name out and offer our services over there. We have some scattered members doing their best out there, so the least that I can do is, simply put, my best to make that task a little more fruitful for them. Celes is doing her part right now out on the field, it’ll be my turn to do so upon her return” he answered. Her reaction to the latte got a light smirk out of him though. There was his answer for the drink, it seemed, and he ordered his own soon after. When it arrived, he gingerly took a sip of the unfamiliar concoction, and all of a sudden he felt as though his energy had begun to swell.
“Think we had something like this back home” he commented. “Kept me awake during late night work.”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie pointed out a couple dishes she knew to be good to Caius when he asked her recommendations. She enthusiastically told him about the white fish stew and the pasta with cream sauce and vegetables, in addition to the grilled cheese she ordered for herself. Some of the new specials seemed a little weird to her, but she knew the old staples to be delicious. “And the latte, of course,” she added. Because you couldn’t come to the Misty Moon and not get the latte. [break][break] Caius told her that he’d be heading to Provo next to help get their name out in the other city. She felt a tad disappointed that he wasn’t going to some amazing, exotic location she’d never heard of, but oh well. Provo was still different enough from Torensten to be exciting to her. And she’d only been once or twice. “Maybe I’ll have to meet up with you there sometime, depending on how long you’ll be there. I haven’t had a chance to properly explore the city. I’ve just been for some of the plays Brinia tried to put on there. Our troupe never caught on quite as well there though.” She sipped more of the delicious latte and thought about what she remembered of Provo. “Oh! Isn’t there a zoo there? I’ve always wanted to go there,” she added wistfully. [break][break] Caius thankfully took her suggestion about the latte. She’d have had to reprimand him if he ordered something boring like a water. “Isn’t it delicious?” He mentioned having something similar in his old home. “You know, I’m not sure I know much about your world before Zephon. I know you said it was similar to Sonora, right? Were you in the military there?” [break][break] As they were talking, their food arrived. The grilled cheese was just as good as Jessie remembered. “Maybe I need to move back into the apartments above this place so I can eat here every day,” she said with a grin before slipping into a more serious silence as she considered what she’d actually be doing next. Maybe it was actually time to sell her apartment entirely and live a nomadic, adventuring life. That seemed to call to her even if it meant not having delicious lattes everyday.
