The Dragonglaive
Quite a few options, wasn't there? There was the white fish stew, the pasta with cream sauce and vegetables, the grilled cheese... That was familiar, vaguely. He peered to the side where he could see something that looked cheesy being stuffed into a sandwich, vaguely recalling its appearance from what might as well have been a lifetime ago. It did look appetizing. Simple, but appetizing. Even looked like something he could make himself, actually, come to think... So perhaps it was a good time to try that. Not that he was getting sick of cup noodles, but he knew it might be good to get some variety on the road, now that he actually had the time and resources to make it happen. And now that he was spending a bit more time in the cities before taking his leave from them, he might as well make the most of the time, right? So he nodded his head, before ordering the grilled cheese to compliment the latte he had ordered for himself. "Looks like we're twinning on this order" he joked softly with a small smile.
Jessie talked about going to Provo for some plays. So she ventured outside of Torensten sometimes after all. Interesting. So they were more of a travelling troupe... He'd remember that.
"Your plays not catch on in Provo? Oh come on, you can't fool me" Caius teased in turn. Perhaps he could catch her outside of Torensten sometime, surprise her with a visit if he happened to be at Provo when she was putting on a play. He took a long sip of the latte. This was actually pretty good, perhaps he'd have to come back here on his own. Or should he try to invite her whenever the craving came up? It was her place, in a way. He doubted she'd want to miss an excuse to come back here. "I haven't been to the zoo yet. Perhaps we can check it out together sometime?" he chirped lightly. Ironic then that he did end up checking out the zoo during his visit, and it was there that he encountered a silver-haired swordsman who led to the destruction of an entire sector in the city...
Their food arrived, and he stared at it a few moments with a curious eye before taking a bite. The cheese melted in his mouth, and his eyes widened at the texture. "By the astrals, this is actually pretty good. The temperature they used brings out the flavor of the cheese really well" he brought up with a laugh. Okay, perhaps he was going to come back here after all. After a few bites, it had given him some time to consider her question.
"It's similar to Sonora, aye. Though I don't remember how advanced it was in comparison to Sonora. A lot of it was in ruins before I was ten years old" he admitted, frowning a bit at the memory. He had gotten used to talking about it, but it never did get any easier. "I was military, sort of. Only served for two years. I was a hunter for a long time before that, I'm going to say for the better part of... Seven years, before I joined their Kingsglaive? The timeline is a little fuzzy, all I remember is people saying that the calamity lasted for ten, and I didn't have to fake my age with the Hunter's Association anymore at some point before that."
He considered if he'd left anything out, then something came to mind as he took another bite, then another drink to wash it down. "Right, hunters are like... Monster hunters. Daemon hunters. Whatever's causing trouble in civilized areas and gets a bounty on its head. Not too far from Dragonblades work, really."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie grinned as Caius copied her order entirely. It didn’t really surprise her that he was afraid of venturing into completely unknown culinary adventures. He seemed the type of person to be reserved in his tastes except when it came to, you know, actual adventuring. She sipped her latte happily as they chatted. Caius was such an easy person to talk to. [break][break] “I guess they have too much else going on in Provo to care about our little plays too much! I don’t know, we just always do way better in Torensten.” She felt a thrill of excitement talking about visiting the zoo in Provo together. “I would love to check it out sometime!” she said enthusiastically. “I love animals, it would be so awesome to see them all there. If you can spare the time from your busy life with the Dragonblades we definitely should go together sometime. I expect you to show me around the city too,” she added with a wink.[break][break] Their food arrived and Jessie eagerly bit into the gooey cheese sandwich. A string of cheese dripped down her chin and she laughed as she tried to swipe it away. She wasn’t the daintiest eater, but hopefully Caius wouldn’t care. He seemed to be thoroughly enjoying his food as well. “I told you this place was amazing! Ugh, I missed it. I seriously need to consider moving back. Though, I guess I don’t know how much longer I’m staying in Torensten.” [break][break] Jessie furrowed her brow and listened intently as Caius told her about his home. It sounded… bleak. Ruined by the age of ten? She couldn’t imagine how hard it must have been to grow up in a place like that. It sounded like he’d not known much other than fighting. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “That doesn’t sound like a good place to grow up. You barely had a childhood, that must have been hard.” She was unusually serious now, offering heartfelt sympathy. “I’m sorry to ask about it, it sounds like it wasn’t something you like to remember too much. I hope you’re happier here, in a way.” [break][break] She lapsed into uncharacteristic silence as she thought about a young Caius forced to fight monsters at such a young age. No wonder he’d grown up into a man who seemed to embody the “all work, no play” attitude. Jessie smiled over her latte at him. “There’s more opportunities to relax and have fun here, I hope.”

The Dragonglaive
"Hmm... It could be a matter of taste. Or even locational culture" Caius brought up after a bit of thought. "Torensten's always had a flair for the big and grand and dramatic. Provo and its people might have different taste. It might be worth researching Provo, getting to really know the place. And looking to see if any plays you can do might appeal to them. It's kind of like fighting a monster, adjusting when things aren't going your way" he suggested. "Play your cards right, and you might even do better over there than you did here."
His expression brightened when she brought up a love for animals. "I grew up raising chocobos, before everything happened" he revealed. It had never come up with most people. "Always loved animals. But didn't see a lot of them for a long time. Still getting used to seeing them there. But I wouldn't trade Vordun for the world, either. I'm glad I was able to learn to apply my expertise to raising him."
Did Vordun class as an animal? He didn't really care either way. He had raised and loved Vordun as he had the chocobos back home. "Of course. I'd be happy to show you around when we get there too. I haven't had much chance to explore the city myself, but I suppose I'll just have to do that before I come get you" he remarked with a small laugh. He knew he should eventually anyway. Now he had a bit more incentive.
Caius didn't seem to mind her eating habits. Mostly because he wasn't much better. Though as the cheese ran down his mouth, his tongue nabbed it so quick he might as well have been a frog. Though things did get serious as he spoke of his home. "I try not to think about it too much. This is where I'm at now, for better or worse" he spoke softly. "I didn't leave behind any family. The Kingsglaive, sure, but they lost men almost every week. And I gave them no reason to miss me."
He ate in silence for a bit, before she spoke up. He nodded his head. "I guess so. I rest when I can and when I need to. Which has certainly been easier to do here. As for fun..." he trailed off, before just slowly shrugging. "Haven't thought much about it. I'm used to working most of the time."
He didn't know how. That was the simple fact of it. There was never really an opportunity, and now that there was, he wouldn't know where to start.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie listened intently as Caius postulated why Brinia’s Troupe hadn’t taken off quite as well in Provo than in Torensten. He had such a logical way of looking at it, examining it from angles she’d never really thought of. This was the way a tactician thought in all ways of life apparently. “I never really thought about it like that,” she mused. “I might have to talk to Brinia about it sometime, see if we can brainstorm anything.”[break][break] “Oooh! That’s awesome!” she exclaimed at Caius’ revelation that he raised chocobos long ago. “I love chocobos though I’m not the most skilled at actually riding them! I should get myself a pet here sometime… Maybe a cat?” She didn’t know exactly what animals she’d loved in her past life except cats. She remembered many, many cats.[break][break] As their talk turned serious, she mellowed. “Yeah. It’s better to focus on the future, I suppose. Especially because none of us know if we’re here permanently or not. Zephon has become home, for better or worse no matter who or what we left behind.” [break][break] It was not even slightly surprising that Caius told her he rarely had thought for fun or that he worked most of the time. She smirked slightly. “That’s why you need to spend more time with me. I know all about a proper work-life balance and how to have fun. Life shouldn’t be all about work, even when your work is important. It’s equally important to take care of yourself, you know? And part of that is having fun.” She grinned, but her words were sincere. “We could do something else fun after dinner,” she mused. But what? What would a man like Caius actually enjoy and not just endure. “Any suggestions?”

The Dragonglaive
Jessie was receptive to the advice, and he smiled in turn. She was so open-minded and willing to look at other possible angles. He quite liked that about her, he had to admit. Many people he had met would scoff at that kind of advice and say how dare he insult their line of work by insinuating that it's their fault, and not somebody else's fault. Of course, not that Caius was insulting Jessie's plays, not at all. But he did hope the criticism helped. He'd love nothing more than to see her troupe be able to branch out if that was their goal, even if he'd miss seeing Jessie around in Torensten. That's if she stayed here regardless... It did sound like she was considering moving on. That would make it harder for him to see her. A shame, really. She was easy to talk to, and easy to relax around too. He'd miss her company, as few times as they'd met up at this point. But he couldn't blame her really, wasn't he a travelling bird himself?
"I hope that works out. I really do" he spoke softly with a gentle smile. And he meant that too. She talked about pets, and he laughed a bit. "I've considered a cat myself, but I'm too much of a travel bird to make that work, I think. In a way, Vordun is the perfect partner for me. He's not exactly a pet, but one that can travel and defend itself definitely works out for me. I think if I ever settle down though..." he trailed off, scratching his head. Where was this coming from? Caius had hardly even thought of settling down until recently, he realized. And he'd never told anyone about this sort of thing either. Well, regardless... "I think I'd like to surround myself with animals. Be that crazy animal person people rave about" he half-joked. "Dogs, cats, chocobos... Dragons. You name it. I think it'd be a fun challenge to undertake, if I can give it the same level of focus I give my current work."
Settling down. That sounded so far away. Almost impossible, really. It just didn't sound like him at all.
He nodded his head slowly when she discussed the future. He didn't want to consider the possibility he'd get sent back someday. He'd accepted that this was his home now. And he wasn't needed back home anymore. His work there was done. In Zephon... People needed him. And he had no interest in returning until the job was done. Though when Jessie brought up all of this stuff about a work-life balance, he tilted his head slightly, a grilled cheese sandwich hanging goofily from his mouth as he stared at her with an intrigued but otherwise confused eye. He gulped down the rest of the sandwich in turn as she asked -- well, more told him -- they could do something "fun" after dinner.
Uhhh...
He just sort of blinked a few times, staring at her blankly. He was quite clearly drawing a blank, but after a few seconds, he cleared his throat as situational awareness hit him. He took a long drink from his latte, as if delaying the inevitable for as long as possible.
"If you wanted to spend more time with me, you could have said so from the beginning, Jess" came the tease. He did know how to joke, a little bit. Oh and now there were nicknames! "But seriously though, I um... I don't know. I don't even know the town very well, as much as I've technically lived here for a few years now. I don't usually take time outside of work for... Recreational things much to begin with, unless they're necessary. This was... A special case."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]“Maybe I can get a cat that likes to travel? That’s probably a bit too far-fetched though, eh? Unless I could fashion some fancy carrying device... “ she mused as she finished the rest of her drink. “Oh well. I’ll figure it out. I just remember being around a lot of cats back home! Maybe it would spark some of my memories to have one, but that’s probably reaching.” She shrugged, but then Caius mentioned just surrounding himself with a ton of animals if he settled down ever. [break][break] She grinned hugely. “That sounds absolutely amazing! If you ever want to retire from your high-stress mercenary life you should totally become the weird animal-hoarding guy that lives in the woods. As long as I’m allowed to visit of course,” she added with a wink and a smirk. “You’re not allowed to live that sort of life without inviting me around.” [break][break] She giggled at Caius’ bewildered stare when she mentioned “work-life balance.” What, was that a term he’d never heard before? Man, his life needed some excitement in it. Working all the time like he did had to get tiresome and just plain sad and lonely after a while. Her mirth died away just a little and she started to feel bad for him. He truly seemed like he didn’t know what “fun” was. [break][break] She blushed and grinned at the tease and nickname, though. If it were anyone but Caius she might almost think he was flirting. “I should have thought that was obvious by now. You won’t be free of me that easily.” But she really was sad to know that he didn’t really take time for fun. What type of life was that? “Your work’s obviously important, but relaxing and just unwinding a bit is important too. I’m glad you made a special exception for me tonight, but you should do it more often. You seem to be enjoying yourself, unless this is just a ruse to not hurt my feelings.” [break][break] “Take some more time for yourself, even if it isn’t with me. But tonight, we could do something else? I’ve heard the Grand Hall is pretty nice. It’s like a museum, so that seems like something you might enjoy since it’s not too crazy or crowded. What do you say? Can you put up with me for longer?” She really hoped he wouldn’t say no.

The Dragonglaive
Caius laughed a bit at that remark, sneaking in what sips from his drink he could while she went on. "If that was viable, I'd have tried it by now" he replied curtly, albeit with a bit of an amused tone to his voice. "I don't think I'll ever tire of your company. You're free to visit whenever you like" came along with continued laughter. It was certainly a fun little thought, hoarding hundreds of animals on that little homestead in the middle of the woods, retired from fighting and just spending his days tending to them while people came to visit here and there. Wouldn't be a bad way to live, actually. But that would be for one day. Today, people needed him. And he couldn't rest until he had answered the call.
Though even Caius could sense the mirth slightly leaving her when he was awkwardly silent about the idea of things to for fun, and his just-as-awkward attempt at an explanation. Was it really such a bad thing that he valued his work over all else? Her following lecture seemed to indicate as such. Honestly, he hadn't really thought about it that way before. He had work to be done and he did all he could to do it. It had been necessary for survival before, and it had then been instrumental in building the Dragonblades. And he didn't really mind it that much. Sure, he could definitely feel fatigue beginning to dredge up, but... He hadn't really been thinking about that too much. Another thing Caius had been pushing away.
-"unless this is just a ruse to not hurt my feelings.”
Caius squinted when she said that part. The stare that followed indicated that was not the case. He had said he didn't tire of her company and probably wouldn't at any point. And he'd meant that. Either way, she mandated he really did need to take time for himself. He bit his lip, and soon decided to occupy himself by slamming the rest of his sandwich in his mouth. The fact was, he didn't know how, or if he could even stand doing it. Tonight was an exception. He'd agreed to celebrate her play with her, and a promise was a promise. And it wasn't like he wasn't enjoying himself, he agreed. But doing it more regularly by himself? He didn't know if he could do that... Would the Dragonblades be okay if he did? Would he even know what to do with himself?
At least for now, she moved to what to do tonight. The Grand Hall, huh? He'd heard rumblings about it, but he wasn't really too sure on what it was about. A museum, she said? He recalled that there used to exist things like that back home, before things happened, but...
He swallowed. Took a deep breath. Finished off his drink to wash it down. Another breath. Processing... Thinking...
He nodded.
"I'm happy to accompany you for longer, of course" he spoke up. "We'll give this Grand Hall a shot."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie grinned, imagining a homestead in the woods guarded over by Vordun and absolutely packed with animals. Maybe that’s what she needed to do when she got older. She wasn’t ready to settle down that permanently yet, but maybe someday. There were worse goals. Though, of course, Jessie would prefer somewhere in or near a city. She liked the hustle and bustle of crowds. [break][break]
Caius still seemed utterly and completely flummoxed by the idea of fun. He crammed more sandwich in his mouth, which Jessie figured was a tactic to avoid answering her. This was going to take some work. She didn’t expect to change him overnight after all, but maybe if she kept working at it she could get him to relax just a little at least. The man definitely needed it before he burnt himself out entirely. [break][break]
It seemed to take the mercenary a little too long to decide to accompany her to the Great Hall. At first, she thought he was going to turn her down. But then, after he’d finished his drink and run out of stalling tactics, he agreed. His smile was sheepish but he didn’t seem entirely against the idea. Hopefully it would end up being at least a little fun! [break][break]
“Great! I’m glad. I hope it will be cool to see everything there. I’m a little rusty on my Torensten history, honestly.” She laid down enough gil to cover both of their meals, daring Caius to try to argue with her. This was her idea and her treat. He better not try to be all manly and decide he needed to be the one that paid. Then she stood with a stretch. [break][break]
“Sorry again that you got all dressed up! I would have worn something a little fancier if I’d known,” she commented. Her dress was plenty nice, but certainly casual compared to Caius’ fanciful look. “Oh well, we should get a move on. I don’t know how late the museum stays open.”

The Dragonglaive
He was absolutely about to insist he should at the very least pay for his half of things. They were celebrating her achievement, he couldn't leave the bill on her after all. But while Caius was not always an expert at reading the room, the way she stared at him as she did so was obvious enough to get him to take the hint that she was not budging on this.
Caius managed a soft smile in acceptance as he got to his feet. “Think nothing of it” he spoke up as he stretched out in turn. The suit was definitely a little tight and doing this without tearing it was uncomfortable but he didn’t mind getting dressed up if she was as happy he did so as she seemed. Her reaction to it earlier was worth it enough.
With that, they headed off to the museum. Caius hadn’t been here yet, obviously, but the place’s size and shape was the first thing he noted. Museums documented historical aspects of the subject matter, but what if this building itself was a part of Torensten’s history?
“The building is shaped like an old fashioned battlement. They were long out of use when I came around, but Lucian records gave me some ideas of what the older variants for guard towers and barracks looked like. It’s very likely with Torensten’s intent on keeping designs to the same spirit as the originals when rebuilding, this may have been used for war a long time ago” Caius mused aloud. He didn’t know for sure, but perhaps they would find out inside?
The museum indeed was still open for another hour or so. This time Caius paid the toll for them before Jessie could say a word. It didn't cost much, but it was the least he could do. He had been so fast though, one could have thought he used his warping capabilities. That or he'd just been looking for the reception since the moment they walked in. She didn't get a chance to complain -- Caius was already walking into the next room.
The first thing they saw was a smaller version of the Lord Hremit statue in Legend's Square. With his gallant, yet froggish face facing the entrance, he was hard to miss. Caius couldn't help but be interested in the glass enclosures that depicted weapons used by heroes of Torensten across the ages. Realizing he had company though, Caius at least tried to figure out a way to keep conversation, as engrossed as he was in the displays.
"I actually make and modify weapons on my spare time" he revealed. "Keeps me busy when nothing's going on, and I'm always a sucker for a well-made weapon. It's pretty clear these weapons were well-used, while also well taken care of. You can see their age pretty easily despite that, though. Gotta be hundreds of years old, some of them."
There was passion in his voice. Caius had a thing for weaponry, go figure.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie’s challenging glare clearly worked. Caius didn’t even try to argue with her about paying and she felt triumphant. Hah! He was learning. [break][break]
They walked together towards the museum. Jessie had a notable spring in her step as they made their way through the streets. It was probably a combination of her success with the play, the good meal, and the good company but she just felt so happy tonight. She was nearly skipping. If only Caius would skip with her, but she knew there was no way that suggestion would go through. She let herself grin at the imagery in her mind though. [break][break]
Caius mused about the shape of the building itself, noting details about it as a military building. On a casual viewing, Jessie might not have noticed that it was indeed an old battlement. But now that he mentioned it, she could definitely see what he meant. It certainly looked like it could have been some ancient fort long ago. [break][break]
Caius paid their entrance into the museum before Jessie could even attempt to interject. Oh well, she’d gotten dinner. She supposed she could allow him to pay for something this time. Of course, that might have mostly been due to the fact that he was just gone before she could even formulate a thought about the paying situation. Jessie caught up to him with a glare that held no real malice. “Rude,” she muttered playfully as they stood together, looking up at a statue of Lord Hremit. [break][break]
Caius, unsurprisingly, got very interested in the weapons displays nearby. Honestly, Jessie was pretty damn intrigued by them too. Some were ornate and beautiful, clearly ceremonial pieces. Others were worn and nicked, these were the weapons that had seen real battle. The ones that had tales to tell even if they weren’t beautiful. [break][break]
“That’s really cool!” Jessie enthused when he revealed he modified weaponry in his spare time. She wasn’t sure it counted as fun, but at least it was a little better than monster fighting all the time. “I definitely know I used to do something similar,” she said, fidgeting with her long, dextrous fingers. “I’m almost itching to try to take some of the firearms apart and figure out how to put them back together. Maybe we’ll have to work together on that sometime.” [break][break]
Jessie hummed in agreement when he mentioned the age of some of the pieces. “These fancy ones are just as old, but it looks like they’ve barely even been used. If ever,” she commented. “The more mundane are probably the more powerful. They’re the ones that might have actually had a role to play in history.” [break][break]
It looked like weaponry was a nerdy thing they could bond over, who knew? “What do you think are in the other wings? I don’t know if I care too much to go look at some dusty old paintings of grumpy kings,” she commented with a chuckle. “We’ll need to find the most interesting exhibits since we don’t have too much time!”
