The Dragonglaive
He laughed when Faris warned him not to drink himself under the table. He was completely right, Caius was absolutely pushing it with this drink. He'd tried to match Faris drink for drink, but Faris was a pirate. Caius was a rugged man with a strong drinking liver, but not a pirate's liver. This was not a battle he would win if he kept trying to match Faris. The fact there was still plenty to go on this mug of the strongest brew he'd ever tasted told Caius that maybe he should cut himself off after he polished off this one. If he even made it that far. "Whatever you hear, I may very well hear worse from Celes. And I do not want that. That lass could terrify a behemoth out of its nest with her bellow alone. I wouldn't stand a chance."
He chuckled at the thought. He'd seen her in the training yard. She was scary. He had no intentions of getting on her bad side if he could help it. Did this count as what Celes had told him not to tell people about? He wasn't actually sure. But Caius softly smiled at the drop of a name. Syldra. It was a girl's name, he wasn't surprised. But there was pain in Faris' voice. Even with his senses steadily starting to dull after pushing the limitations of his tolerance on that last swig, he knew right away there was pain. But what was the origin of it? Was it from being separated due to being sent to this world? Or something worse?
He enjoyed getting to hear about how Faris had gotten to know Syldra, and their time together. For once he felt like... Well, like someone actually understood for once. Caius was passionate about his love and care for Vordun, and the relationship he had with the drake. It wasn't one that many understood. Not even Celes, as much as he trusted her with his life and as much as he adored her. She was his dearest and most valued friend, but he knew not even she seemed to understand or was able to appreciate that bond between man and drake. Faris could. Faris had walked in these shoes, and for once it just felt... Freeing. Refreshing. But every word carried the hints of past tense, of pain, of loss.
"She sounds like she's real reliable" he spoke up, playing around with the mug a little. "Of course I'm treating Vordun well. They're incredible creatures, drakes. People don't appreciate them for what they are. Vordun's saved more human lives than most people do. And yet they still fear him because of how he looks. They don't know that when you put him in a crowd of people, he's the most harmless of them all if you don't hurt him. They don't know that if you scratch his belly, he rolls over onto his back like he's a giant puppy. They don't know that if you scratch behind his ears, he'll nuzzle you with his head. Or that he drapes his head on my leg when he knows I have food that I haven't shared yet. They don't see that, and even the ones who do, many conveniently forget. They take for granted that he's just as responsible for saving all those people as the rest of us are. He really is one of us, and one day I hope everyone else will see him the way that I do."

Ah man. They've found something to bond over. Whiskey and dragons.
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris nodded as Caius spoke of his drake. If there was anyone who could understand their connection, it was Faris. It seemed a strange thing to most, being so taken to a dragon. Dragons were the worst of beasts, most thought. They were fearsome and terrible and would tear apart a whole village using nothing but their teeth. Still, that wasn’t the whole of the story, and it wouldn’t be the last of it. Drakes were noble beasts, Faris thought. The kind too smart to take a liking to most men. Get on their bad side, and it would take a true warrior to survive. But win their hearts, and they were a friend for life.
Faris swirled his drink moodily. Well, a friend so long as one of them lived, anyway.
”It’s understandable, lad,” Faris said. ”We’ve got a way with drakes, but there’s a ton of beasts out there ready to rip a man in two. We’ve seen them ourselves. How’s this lot supposed to know you’ve tamed him right?”
Faris drank, draining the last of it down to ice. Then he set it down, plucked out a piece, and popped it into his mouth. The ice was hard and cold and made him shiver. In the heat of the tropical city, it was almost better than the liquor.
”I doubt there’s enough good in the world to be done for every man to see him for what he is. Aye, they’ll not have heard his name, most like. The good will have to be enough in itself. But who knows. Toting a blue drake around, you’re quite the sight. You make a strong enough name for yourself, and maybe you’ll take on a following.”
Faris laughed. He wasn’t wrong exactly. Caius might have had all the charisma of a dead fish, but you could recognize him in an instant, and that wasn’t nothing. He’d make a name for himself, Faris thought. He’d make a name and uphold it then become more of a hero than Faris ever had. Then again, Faris had never really tried. The word “hero” had never really fit him.
”Where are you keeping him, by the way?” Faris rolled the ice to his other cheek and bit down on it, relishing the satisfying crunch. ”Syldra could take care of herself in the ocean depths, but my sister had a family wind drake. She needed a lot of caring for and a whole stable to herself. I don’t imagine you’ve got one of those nearby.”

The Dragonglaive
“Aye. I wholly understand the need for hesitation. It’s how one survives, after all" Caius agreed, starting to take smaller sips from the mug from here. No more big chugs. It was clear he couldn't handle this stuff in bulk. "But I’ve always wished people would be more willing to give it a chance. Unfortunately, folks put too much stock in appearances on the surface. Or on preconceptions. Vordun himself has done nothing but good."
He knew that Faris was right though, there was nothing he could do in order to make this work with everybody. All he could do was as much as he could. Though he smirked lightly when Faris brought up that making a strong name for himself toting around a dragon might make for a following. "Perhaps. What we've done so far has brought us our fair share of trouble. People growing to trust the Dragonblades and seeing Vordun as one of us would certainly make both mine and Vordun's job easier."
Caius did intend to make a name for himself here, though not for his own personal reasons. He was tied to the Dragonblades. What he did benefited the Dragonblades and that was what mattered to Caius.
Faris asked where he was keeping Vordun, and he took another swig in turn. After whetting his lips, he He kept his voice down as he spoke. Even haggard, he at least knew this part by instinct alone. “I built a place a little ways from town. Near to a forest and river, so his every natural need is taken care of even when I’ve left him there to rest. I built a place for myself to rest my head, and a one-drake stable next to it for Vordun, well enough to fit him. Took a lot of hours and a lot of trial and error. Area ‘round it isn’t populated, lots of open space, game to hunt. People don’t bother us. It was a lot of work and I honestly only did it period because of Vordun, but it was worth it."
But something Faris had said caught his interest. "A family drake? Your family really seems to be tied to them, aren't they?"

”Huh.” Faris listened, leaning back in his chair as Caius told him about where he kept his dragon. Apparently he had a nice little house in the countryside. Faris wasn’t sure whether to call him lucky or not so he didn’t call him anything at all. It sounded exactly like he’d have pictured Caius if you’d told him that Caius had the means. Faris was one for the freedom of the open sea. He’d never settle in roots if he had a say in it, but that just wasn’t the mercenary’s way. Faris shrugged.
”I guess you’ve done well for yourself,” he said. ”The drake must be awfully grateful. Like I said, you’d need a stable to keep it well.”
Some part of him had expected Caius would need a lecture on proper dragon care. It seemed Caius was way ahead of him.
”Ehhh?” Faris made a noncommittal noise, tossing his head to the side. ”Not really a family drake, per say. Not for me at least. I told you how I was lost at sea. I only met my father once, and that was on his dying breath. Then it was just Lenna and me.” Faris wished he had more liquor. Wouldn’t do him any good, probably. His head was already heavy and swimming.
”The royal family of Tycoon’s had generations of wind drakes. Real close to them, see. They’re vowed to the protection of the wind crystal. The crystals guard the elements. Keeps them all stable. Or...they used to.” Faris rubbed the back of his head. ”They all shattered some time ago. But everything righted itself out in the end.”
He was rambling, he knew. Going off topic. It was hard to stay focused.
Faris tilted his head, eyes drifting towards the ceiling. ”The fire crystal chose me as a Warrior of Light. Tasked to save the world from whatever was ailing them then from the evil unleashed after that. That’s where I get my power. All the…” Faris waved his hands around, making noises that he approximated to be the whoosh of light overtook him whenever he changed jobs. ”That’s the crystals. The fire crystal. Cause that’s the one that chose me.”

The Dragonglaive
"Settled down" was a bit of an overstatement for Caius. The little hamlet was nice, but Caius was too used to travelling around to spend too much time in it. To be honest, it was more for Vordun than for Caius. Vordun needed a place to rest when the dragon had exerted itself enough and needed a break while Caius went off on his own. Caius didn't really consider that he himself could also use the home time. But that was just how Caius was. Vordun was always put first. That was his number one rule.
Faris gave light praise for how he'd handled Vordun, and he nodded his head in thanks. It was surprising coming from Faris, but he wasn't one to look a horse in the mouth. Not unless the horse needed its teeth cleaned anyway. Faris said that family drake might not apply so much for Faris, reminding him that he had been lost at sea pretty early on in life. He sounded like he missed his sister. He'll bet he did. Caius missed his siblings, but... There was nothing he could do for them now.
“Surprised it wasn’t a wind crystal” Caius muttered when Faris said the fire crystal chose him. That one was definitely the alcohol. The wind crystal seemed to fit him like a glove, yet he was chosen by the fire one. Funny how life works like that sometimes.
“So the crystal gave you the power to change clothes?" Caius spoke up with a small laugh. It was clear that it gave Faris the ability to switch around his abilities in order to harness a wide variety for different situations, but he was being cheeky. Likely also the alcohol. "Crystals are interesting like that, apparently. I killed monsters without crystal powers for a few years and now I have crystal powers because a King decided I should. Not that I mind."
He scratched his head after a few moments of thought. "Is your sister still alive? Is she here with you in Zephon?" he inquired. Faris had mentioned having Bartz for company, but hadn't brought up his sister until now.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris shot Caius a look that was both good-natured and fierce. ”It’s the fire crystal,” he said. ”On account of my fiery heart, it said. Bartz has the wind crystal -- the air-headed lout. He can’t stay in one place for a moment and his thoughts are the same.” Now that he thought about it, Tycoon had been keeping an eye on the wind crystal for ages, hadn’t it? With two present from the royal family, it only stood to reason that one of them would be granted its powers. Just went to show the power of heart over blood, he supposed.
Water fit Lenna better anyway.
”It’s more than just clothes,” Faris said, but he was laughing before he could even pretend to be offended. ”Though, aye, that’s part of it too.” And a strange part at that. If he was taking its power, what did the costume matter? He could understand the armor well enough, but what was the difference between a cloak for a white mage versus a cloak for a black mage? ”Maybe the crystals have a sense of style!”
”Wait, you were chosen by the crystals as well?” Faris did a double take, staring at him like he’d grown an extra head. ”Did they talk to you? Where’s the shard? I thought they were shattered by now!”
Wait, Caius was from a different place, wasn’t he? One that hadn’t heard heads nor tails of Tycoon. And one that didn’t follow the same rules, best he could reckon. ”So you took it...from a king? Why is it you always fight the same then? You only ever like using your…” He didn’t know the word for it, flying around and hitting things with magic swords that could also fire undersized cannonballs. ”Your…you class?”
That’d do it.
”That’d make you a Warrior of Light, wouldn’t it? Or something. There were the Dawn Warriors before us.” This was all getting jumbled around. Faris couldn’t make a thing out of it, not when his head was as murky as a stormy sea. ”Did they send you on a quest round the world?”
That’s what crystals did, wasn’t it? Keep the elements in line, lock away evil warlocks, and send you trekking across the planet and back trying to keep it all running how it should?
”I don’t know much more of the crystals than that. Before all this, I didn’t even know they could talk!” Faris laughed. ”Have you ever met one? It’s enough to make your head spin!”
It was still spinning. The longer he sat upright, that was. Faris didn’t want to know what it would feel like once he got to standing.
Then Caius asked about his sister. ”Lenna?” Faris tilted his head. ”Aye, she’s fine. Or she was when I left. She took the throne of Tycoon like she was meant to. Technically it was mine if I wanted it, but I couldn’t last a day in that stuffy old castle!” Faris shook his head. ”I don’t know where she is now. I hope she’s back where she belongs. It’s safer there, and Tycoon needs a queen.”
He tapped his finger on the table, feeling suddenly surly. ”One that’s not me, anyway.”

The Dragonglaive
Caius couldn't help a laugh at Faris bringing up the apparent reason for the fire crystal choosing them. "You are definitely fiery. I'll give you that" he remarked, an amused smile crossing his complexion. "I don't actually mind it, though. A bit of fire never hurt anyone."
Well, where did that one come from? There were sides to every drunk, and Caius had certainly drank his fill. But he wasn't kidding -- he never really minded Faris' fire. Sure, his attitude was a problem sometimes. But when it wasn't actively harming others, or hounding him at every turn over everything possible, Caius actually kind of liked the Captain's feistiness. Though whether he'd speak that far on the matter openly was another matter. He said that Bartz had the wind crystal, and Caius laughed jollily at that as he took a swig. "Sounds like Bartz" he agreed.
Faris asked about how things worked with how he obtained his abilities and why he wore the same clothes. Or the same "class" as he put it. The "him" class. That sounded about right. "In our world, the King of Lucis is chosen by the crystal. Just one crystal. Probably works different than yours. It gives us only one set of abilities, but it's enough to get the job done. I've unfortunately never actually seen the Crystal itself. The crystal's chosen King acts as the will of the Crystal, choosing a select few to act as his royal arms. To them, the crystal's power is shared with them, with the King acting as a conduit. Didn't send us on a quest or anything involving talking crystals though."
He scratched his head. "Though technically, my King isn't here. I shouldn't have my abilities without a conduit. Somehow, someway, I've managed to make the crystal's power my own."
He peered at Faris with a curious eye. "Your crystals really talk? And send you on silly quests? I don't know whether that sends amazing or ridiculous."
Did he just throw around some wordplay? Was that his own language or the alcohol? Both? Maybe both.
On the subject of Faris' sister, he nodded his head. While he was sure Faris would enjoy their company, like with his own King back home, someone had to stay behind and take care of things. Though he smirked lightly at Faris' admission he wouldn't last a day in the castle. "I don't think I could either in your position. I may have been a servant of the Crown but I never envied my superiors. I'm perfectly happy being able to come and go where I like."
Faris' last remarks though, near-confirmed his previous suspicions. He was curious, but didn't know how to word it eloquently. Especially not with alcohol. But he'd try. His voice lowered, perhaps to protect Faris' dignity if it was not a thing they wanted to be known. "You refer to yourself as the would-be Queen. Unless terms differ between your world and mine, in which case I apologize, is the whole male Captain thing like, a preference sort of thing? I've heard about that sort of thing in Sonora, though I'm still learning on that subject" he brought up. Caius took a deep breath, and then another swig. Thinking about it had resulted in him having to reflect on it. It wasn't the prettiest result. "The longer I have resided in this world, the more I realize I wasn't ready for a life in a peaceful land. In a lot of ways... I'm still not."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Caius talked a lot about kings. Faris knew he’d talked just as much about crystals, but it was still a little hard to follow when he wasn’t thinking straight to begin with. What he gathered was that Caius’ crystal wasn’t like his crystal and that everyone had the same fighting style where he came from. No switching on the fly. No great flashes of light , and his crystal wasn’t much for talking. Which led to some questions on Caius’ part.
”Your crystals really talk? And send you on silly quests.”
”It wasn’t a silly quest!” Faris said a little louder than he’d intended. ”It was a matter of the world! And the crystals! And that fiend Exdeath though we didn’t know it!” Now where had that come from? There was a fire in his heart, and he wasn’t one to question it. That’s what had granted him the crystal in the first place, hadn’t it?
”Aye, it was all a bit mad, but it was a serious business. It led us to another world on a meteor! And then through the Rift! And all the way to the Void!” He knew, on some level, that Caius wouldn’t know what he was talking about. Didn’t help though. Faris would say what he wanted to say, and nothing like good sense would stop him.
”We were the Warriors of Light!” he said with a huff. ”And that’s that!”
Stupid swordsman and his stupid jokes. Faris wasn’t much of a hero, but he could act like one when he had to, and that was the kind of business he’d found himself in. Hero business. Serious business.
Then Caius had to hone in on the whole ‘Queen’ thing.
”Ngyeuuugh.” Faris made a noise somewhere between a groan and a growl that really, really didn’t want to go there. ”I’m a woman, true enough, and a princess I suppose. But I took to life this way a long time ago, and there’s no going back now. I don’t care what you call me. I’ll be the same whatever your thoughts on the matter.”
In a way, it really did bother him, but it shouldn’t have so that was that. He’d let Bartz come to his own conclusions. It was easier not to argue over the whole thing.
”A man won’t respect you behind the wheel of a ship if they think you’ve got a womanly disposition. And they get lonely after not seeing one for a time.” Faris crossed his arms, feeling stormier than he had before. ”It’s got nothing to do with a peaceful land. It’s my choice, and I’m sticking by it.”

The Dragonglaive
Caius couldn't help a jolly laugh at Faris' outburst. "Alright, I'm sorry I called it a silly quest. It sounds like the crystal set you on quite the adventure, mate. You'll have to regale me it one day, I'd love to hear it. I've always enjoyed a good, exciting story, and the tale of the Warriors of Light might well be up my alley."
He tempered his drink a bit as he considered, as much as he could anyway, how much of what was left he could handle. It was definitely going to be his last drink, but he had been punching above his weight class and he was feeling the consequences right now. Still, he was definitely interested in that Warriors of Light story, regardless of whether it was true or not. Talking crystals? Going to another world on a meteor? Through a rift? Into the very void itself? It all sounded like a big tall tale, but Caius had seen his share of tomfoolery as well. So he wasn't going to write it off as impossible. Hell even if it wasn't truthful, it still sounded like a hell of a story and one he'd very much like to hear.
But Faris' answer on his question caused him to laugh. Hard. After a few moments, he bowed his head slightly. "I apologize for laughing, I'm not laughing at you, I swear. I don't understand any of the loneliness stuff, that's flown a bit over my head, but... Won't respect you for having a womanly disposition? I'd ask if you were joking, but unfortunately I know you're not. The reason I'm laughing is because they're fools who don't know better. Not yet, anyway. The most intimidating people I've met on that battlefield are maidens hardened by fire. Yuna is one of them, though her hearthfire personality might tell you otherwise. She's one of the last people even I'd want to cross."
He took a small swig. Might as well. "But then there's my business partner. I've dealt with dragons, giant robot housing complexes, and a Lich. But the last person I ever want to cross swords with is General Chere. She's a terror on that battlefield, an icy presence that chills you to the bone even when you're standing on the same side. She's a Blizzaga-launching menace who is just as competent with a sword. She is genuinely scary to watch fight. I've heard rumors amongst the ranks that some newer recruits, mainly young men with a chip on their shoulders who haven't had the shine taken off their armor yet, got uppity with her over her being a woman. She called them into a sparring match and they never questioned her again. I don't think even your men would question her. Even I get chills when she goes all out."
Though he did smile a little as a thought came to him. "Then again, I don't think you needed that guise either. I've seen you fight, Cap. Man or woman, they'd learn to respect you. Of that, I have no doubt."
He shrugged. "But honestly, what matters is what makes you happy. He, she, Captain, whatever you prefer, I'll gladly oblige."

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris felt himself go as red as the fire in his crystal as he shot him a fierce look. ”It’s nothing to go on laughing about!” It felt like a snarl on his lips -- like something beastly, born hot and bright. Part of Faris wanted to punch him. The other part wanted to hide in a hole. It was nothing to laugh about.
Caius wasn’t laughing at him. That’s what he said anyway, but Faris didn’t want to hear it because it sounded like it was at him and that was enough. Caius was going on like there wasn’t a speck of difference between the genders to him, and not just that, but that he’d never even heard of such a thing. That was all a bunch of swell as far as Faris was concerned. He couldn’t be that naive.
Could he?
”I’ve got no doubts about your partner,” Faris said. ”And Yuna’s got a heart of steel, but there’s still that matter of respect. Sounds like your partner takes her share of trouble, and more than you’d know. Doesn’t matter how fierce she is, she’s got something to prove if she wants to be held to your level in their eyes. A man’s got to be strong. A lass’s got to be stronger in spades.”
He shook his head. ”I’ll fight as either one if the crystal’s class demands it. I’ve got friends who call me both. But I’ve lived this long how I am, and it’s what I like best. A woman’s got an uphill battle, and I’ve not a lick of sense towards all the dresses and jewels and whatever comes along with it.”
He laughed. ”Captain though. I like that. Nice and simple, no two ways about it.” He shook his head. ”I can’t tell if your world’s a dream or if you’ve kept your head in the dark. I've got hopes in the first. That’d be nice to know, a place like that being out there and all.”
