Then nothing. No impact, no pain, not even the sensation of falling anymore. What did that mean? Was she…?
Vanora’s eyes snapped open, almost expecting to be dead. The lack of pain was...surprising. Had she not broken anything? But she had fallen so far, that couldn’t be right. Come to think of it, it didn’t look like she was in Duscae at all. Pushing herself to the sitting position, she looked around at her surroundings. Dense fog clung to the forest around her, the thick foliage from the trees blocked the light, making it difficult to see. Surely, she must have been dead. Vanora was convinced she was dead! Such a shame that the afterlife took place in such a creepy place, with no other beings in sight. Was this how she would spend the rest of her miserable existence? All alone, stuck in these dark, creepy woods? That was pretty...lame. At least give her something to do if she were actually dead! What, was she expected to talk to herself more than she already did?
With a grunt, she rose to her feet and glanced around once more. The forest was creepy. Like anything could jump out at her, or she would never see the light of day. Even so, she wasn’t afraid. “Either this is a shitty dream, or I’m really dead.” She muttered to herself. Well, there was no use in standing around waiting for something to happen. Outstretching a hand, the ginger manifested her lance, more so as a way to reassure herself she could still do it. The familiar weight was comforting in the unfamiliar place, a little piece of reassurance that she was not truly lost. Yeah...she could handle just about anything thrown her way! Even death! ...damn, she really hoped she wasn’t dead.
“Alright spooky forest, give me your worst!” Vanora called out, brandishing her weapon as she started moving forward. Either she’d make it out of this damned place, or she’d spend eternity trying! That being said, she had absolutely zero idea which way to go. But hey, maybe she could just keep walking forward until she found something promising?

A goblin went flying, potentially smacking her in the face if she didn't duck.
Caius hated this damn forest. This hole didn't deserve to exist. It existed only to trap travelers, using their memories and desires and loved ones against them in order to make them prey to the monsters here. But it seemed like everyday that someone had been lured into here and hadn't returned. And people like Caius were hired to find them. Caius had already found the victim. Dead, stab wounds. Looked to be from goblins. It wasn't long after that the very goblins had tried to feast on Caius himself while he was distracted. But compared to his previous visits, Caius was ready for them.
This time, there was no emotion. No surprise from him. The forest had played its tricks and Caius was used to them now. Now, he just intended to hurt the monsters who had hurt so many people they had lured in here. For a moment, he saw a Kingsglaive jacket from the corner of his eye, but... At this point he had seen so many in this forest that it didn't phase him anymore.
"FIRA!"
The fireball launched past her, hitting a goblin that had come from the trees and charged. They had been aiming for -her- but Caius hadn't actually been able to see her in the dark. The green colors of the goblins did not blend like her black jacket, so all he saw was them.
As Vanora wandered through the forest, she was nearly wiped out by a goblin flying her way. Thankfully, her reflexes were good enough that she managed to duck down, narrowly being missed by the creature. "What the…?" How had she not heard the commotion? Sure, it was difficult to see, but she should have been able to hear! Was she getting rusty? She was supposed to be in her prime!
There was no way to really see the other person, though she could see the goblins - albeit just barely, though their color certainly helped. At least she was getting that excitement she wanted? Time to jump into action.
The light from the ball of fire gave her ample time to jump out of the way, her head snapping in his general direction - the voice at least sounded male. "Watch it!" She hissed out, lunging forward with her lance to impale a goblin. With one being dispensed, she summoned a ball of fire in her right hand, trying to help her see a bit better. Not that great, but it would have to do. Damn, did this forest have to be so ridiculously dark?
"I'm gonna keep talkin' so you don't burn me, alright?" She called out to her unknown ally. Not like it was that hard, she could seemingly never shut up. The fire allowed her to catch a glimpse of the male, but she paid it no mind. After all, there were much more important matters at hand. Namely, the six goblins they had yet to take care of.
"Fira!" Vanora threw the fireball in her hand towards the creatures, then warping behind them to attack from behind. Well, if the jacket wasn't enough of a clue, maybe this was. "Over here!" She exclaimed, slashing at one of the goblins. Was she really talking so he knew where she was, or did she get some kind of enjoyment out of what she was doing?

Typically when illusions of Kingsglaive started popping up, they wouldn't be involved in combat unless they were attacking him. In this case, the woman, who's voice he could almost swear he recognized, was telling him to be careful, and also... Attacking the goblins? It had to be a trick, right? She had just appeared out of nowhere. Like the goblins had. Like the illusions always did. Caius didn't say anything back, he focused his attention on the goblins, warping forward and impaling one through the head. Their sickly green skins made them easier to see, especially as he cast a Fire spell on his gunblade as an imbuement, causing the blade to heat up and contract flames. Now he could see.
Several more goblins went down in a score of flames, until the woman's voice sounded nearly next to him. He pointed the sword at her head, and that's when he saw her.
One of his own former teammates. He was surprised at first, but his expression remained cold... Stoic. Serious. All business. He didn't give them another glance. His world was not one that this one took from, or his time period didn't anyway. It was just another pathetic attempt to draw on his memories to take his guard down. If this illusion attacked him, he would kill it like the rest. Until then... His focus was on the goblins.
"Fira."
His icy tone reverberated as two more goblins were set aflame. This entire accursed forest could burn for all he cared. His job was about done, now. Take care of this herd, he had decided, and he would head back. There was nothing left for him here. Only a malicious forest that wished to prey on what he had once held dear to him.
Her onslaught did not halt, even as the man took a more direct approach. Was he...warping around? Just as she was? That had to be coincidence, right? Surely it wasn't exclusively an ability of the Kingsglaive, but the coincidence was beyond scary. And the weapon he wielded...something was tugging at the back of her mind, the slightest sense of recognition...
Vanora stopped when the sword was pointed at her, ready to retaliate. A shame, she thought it'd be nice to have someone to fight by her side. But as she finally got a good look at the man, she froze, her face draining of color. Caius Dragelion. A man they had buried what, a year ago? Two? She hadn’t seen him nor heard his voice in ages, but the sight of the man in front of her was like a punch to the gut. They hadn't found a body, but his bloodied jacket and dagger were proof enough for the Kingsglaive. Hell, she'd been one of the few that went out to see if there were any signs of him. And now he was here, standing before her. Did that mean she was dead? Or was she just seeing ghosts?
"Caius…?" The ginger managed to get out, her voice surprisingly soft for once.
Looking directly into his eyes, there was no doubt that this was the same man she fought alongside. Even with the icy look, she recognized him immediately. She couldn't exactly beat herself up for not realizing sooner - it had been awhile since she had last seen him nor did she have any reason to believe he might be alive - but she did feel a bit of...remorse? Sadness? Anger? She couldn't quite put her finger on it. One thing was for sure, she was definitely confused.
However there was no time to dwell on that. Their eye contact was intense, yet brief as he soon returned to the fight at hand. Well, at least it didn't seem like he was going to decapitate her for now. Vanora tried to snap herself back into the right mindset, the spell he cast drawing her to action. Warping forward, she plunged the tip of her lance into a goblin, cutting it cleanly in half.
Was this truly Caius, or was it a dream? She had no inclination of the illusory properties of the forest, so it wasn't like she knew what exactly was going on. If he were truly alive, she would have to find out where they were. If they were near Eos, she would drag his sorry ass back home and let him appear in front of the King. If not, well...she could try to understand why he couldn't return home. But if this were the afterlife, and she were here with the real, dead Caius…
"Fire." Lifting her hand, she fired off another fireball, aiming for one of the few remaining goblins. Their work was just about finished, might as well converse?
"You're supposed to be dead." She stated plainly, trying to mask the emotions she felt. "I...we, the Kingsglaive...we buried you. There wasn't a body, but...you're supposed to be dead! Don't tell me I'm dead too?"

She kept talking. Imitating one of his teammates now? That wasn’t new at all, bit usually the forest had tried to be more convincing. Emulating Celes, knowing his guard would come down instantly with her around. Emulating His Highness, giving him pause. Emulating someone that he actually knew was here. Not a ghost. Not a spectre that could never be real. Why toy with his hopes? If this forest and its monsters were able to discern and play with his memories, why use something he had long accepted was impossible?
All of the people he had met from Lucis. All of the people HE knew… Didn’t know him. Not other Kingsglaive, no denizens of Lucis… Not even Noctis himself, the man that, as far as he knew, he died for. Nobody knew him. Nobody shared his memories, his experiences… For theirs were completely different. In their Lucis, Noctis had sacrificed himself to stop the Starscourge and Ardyn. In their Lucis, Caius had never gotten the chance to be Kingsglaive. He didn’t even exist as far as anyone knew. Ironically the only one that knew what Caius was going through, was this damn forest.
And now it had run out of tricks and was dangling impossibilities in his face.
Caius was not a man that got mad. He was not a man whose intentions were ever malicious. But the Headstone Forest brought out the worst in him. This cheap trick only served to piss him off, as his attacks grew more ferocious, more aggressive. This forest knew, but it did not understand. It was only a beast that used these memories to feed the monsters within.
Monsters he’d slaughter. One by one. For every life they had led here. For every life they had taken.
As the last one fell, Caius lit his hand once more as his sword disappeared in a burst of blue light, taking her in. Deep down, he wanted to hope. But meeting her again in the Headstone Forest? Impossible. The impossible didn’t happen here. It was only a memory made for one’s vision.
“You’re still here?” he called out. He didn’t know why he humored it instead of cutting it down, but perhaps he had grown tired of the killing.
She didn’t go away even when he had shown he’d just slaughter them too if they attacked.
“I’m leaving. Follow me if you wish. But if the forest’s illusions reveal your true face to be yet another monster… You’d best be gone when I turn around. Just because your kind didn’t hesitate to kill that young woman you lured here, doesn’t mean I will.”
The warning was sent. Cold, blunt and harsh. He was sick of these games. He’d had enough of this forest for one day. He turned and began to take his leave. If she followed behind, the darkness would eventually begin to evaporate… And the rising sun would be almost blinding with its contrast to the eternal darkness they had been faced with before. Where there had been rot, there was now green.
For Vanora, this was her first taste of what Zephon truly was.
Things still weren’t making sense. She’d been familiar with the cold, calloused side of Caius, but...after disappearing for so long, being presumably dead, you’d think he’d be a little nicer to her. If anything, she should have been the one treating him like that! “You’re still here?” What an arrogant thing to say to someone who literally buried the memory of you! Whereas Caius was a man slow to anger, Vanora seemed to exclusively express it. She may have felt other emotions, but did she give herself the chance to express them? No! And the feelings she had about running into Caius after all these years were quickly overwhelmed by the anger she felt at his response to her. Not that it was necessarily his fault, but she hadn’t known the truth of their location. How was she supposed to know he thought she was just another illusion?
“We’ve only just been reunited, and the first thing you do is throw accusations at me? Watch who you’re threatening, just because we thought you were dead doesn’t mean I won’t kick your ass.” She glowered at him, her brow furrowed in anger. Killed? Lured? Monster? What the hell was he talking about? She hadn’t seen any ‘young woman’! Anger aside, she knew one thing for certain; she had to get out of this forest. If Caius knew the way out, it didn’t matter if he was being a complete dickhead. She had to follow him.
But she wasn’t happy about it!
The ginger was glaring daggers at his stupid blonde head as she followed. The light was becoming clearer, allowing her to see her ex-teammate more easily. He looked about the same as when she had last seen him. Though, it seemed like his facial hair grew. As far as she could tell, there were no glaring injuries...had his death been a farce? He might have saved their king from an assassination attempt, but was it all for show? The more they walked, the less likely the theory of her having died seemed to be possible - what kind of afterlife involved goblins that attacked you out of nowhere? However, that did not make things easier to wrap her head around. If it weren’t the afterlife, how did she get here? Why was she here? And why the hell was Caius-fucking-Dragelion alive?
Once they emerged from the treeline, her eyes swept the nearby area. Unfamiliar land to her, some place she had never seen, even in pictures. She frowned as she took in the landscape. Toto, I’ve a feeling we aren’t in Eos anymore.
None of this was answering her questions. At least she could interrogate him now that they were out of the creepy forest. “Out with it, Dragelion.” She called out to him, crossing her arms. At least she could see him now. If he tried to do anything, she’d be able to see it and respond appropriately. “How come you aren’t dead? And where, exactly, are we?”

She continued to lambast him throughout the trip. While it hurt, he ignored it. He kept going, and once they were out, he turned to look at her. Still there. He looked to the forest. It wasn't far enough. When she demanded her explanation, he didn't say anything. Instead, he turned and took off at a run. Her still being there at the entrance told nothing. They always appeared there, luring people into the forest to their doom. He kept running, using warps to clear obstacles and move as far away as possible as quickly as he could. If she was still there when the forest was out of sight...
He turned. He stared at her, slowly coming closer as he drew his sword once more. He watched her, waiting for the possibility she might attack. Slowly, he reached out and grabbed her shoulder.
It was a human form. The forest was out of sight. His sword disappeared from his hand as he reached over and grabbed her other shoulder, staring her in the face. His eyes widened. His grip on her shoulders tightened. This couldn't be real. It couldn't be. If the forest had somehow grown in power, and this was some kind of trick... He would march right back there and he would burn it to the ground. Today would be the day. He'd burn it, and damn the consequences.
"You're... You're real" he spoke softly, staring her in the eyes. "You... You know me?"
Caius had been a quiet young man back in the Kingsglaive, who didn't talk much. This would likely be a far cry from the man she knew as he stared at her, mouth agape. His hands shook, his voice trembled as emotion overcame him. This... This couldn't be real. But it was. Not just someone he knew, but someone that remembered him. Someone who knew him. Someone from his own world.
His words came in a trembled whisper.
"Holy s*!t."
He wanted to break into tears at that moment, but they didn't come just yet. But overcome with emotion he couldn't stop himself from closing the gap and wrapping his arms around her shoulders in a tight embrace, burying his head there. He wouldn't say he had been particularly close with Vanora, or really any of his teammates. But at that moment, he just didn't care.
"Two years" he spoke quietly. "I've been here two years. Nobody that's been brought here from our world knew me. Nobody recognized me, not even my own King. I've watched people be reunited with their friends, their teammates, their loved ones, and yet I've..."
He didn't know what to say anymore. His words failed him. He couldn't get anything else out.
And now he was running? What was up with this guy? Whatever, she wasn’t going to chase after him. Though the temptation to drag him away and throw him in front of King Noctis to face what he had done was appealing...she had more important things to think about. For example; how the hell was she going to get home? Ah, she was annoyed. It might have been better if she faced those damned goblins by herself…
Vanora started walking, not exactly following the blonde, but going in the same direction as him. It was as good a shot as any, may as well try to get to civilization. And far from that creepy forest. But as Caius turned, wielding his sword, she stopped. “So you do want to fight, eh? Well if you’re that excited to get beaten, who am I to deny you?” However, no blows were exchanged as he grabbed her shoulder. Then the other. At least his sword was put away for now. She could probably take him in hand-to-hand combat if it came down to it. They were roughly the same size, and she had some more experience than him.
But no fighting was to be had. Caius looked...really surprised. “Of course I’m real! What’re you going on about?” Was he going soft in the head or something? “I know we weren’t that close, but I went to your funeral! I think I know you--”
Oh. They were hugging now? Okay. Kinda weird. Like she said, they weren’t that close. Caius never really came off as an affectionate guy or anything. Vanora didn’t pull away, instead giving him a somewhat awkward pat on the back. She wasn’t especially affectionate either, so this was a little more awkward than it needed to be...could they go back to wanting to fight each other?
“Woah, woah, wait, slow down--” He was talking more nonsense! Nothing was making sense! “So you really didn’t die?? And we...we’re for sure on another world. You aren’t joking or anything? What the...two years and you haven’t been able to go back?” That wasn’t good. She had to get back, return to her people, her teammates, her king! She wasn’t like, the backbone of the Kingsglaive, but they needed her just as much as she needed them!
Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself. One thing at a time. “It’s...good to see you, Dragelion. I hated thinking that you were dead.” Close or not, the death of a teammate was a difficult one. His funeral had been hard on them all. And to think, he was actually here the whole time...and the same happened to her! The hell?? “Now, can you please explain to me what’s going on here?” Yeah, she wasn’t exactly one for heartfelt reunions.

This was legitimately a thing. He still couldn't believe it. After all these years of being alone, having to make new connections, start a new family essentially, someone here in front of him was actually from his own world. His own time. Someone who knew him, knew who he was. Knew what had happened. Knew...
He wanted to ask, right away. But reason slowly took him back over after the initial flurry. He let himself settle as he gingerly pulled himself from her. Embraces were definitely not something he was used to. He couldn't recall a time he had actually jumped into something like that willingly, but these circumstances... Well, they weren't exactly normal, were they? He took a deep breath, before giving a half bow of his head as he regained his composure. "My apologies, Vanora" he spoke curtly, his expression steadily returning to that neutral, professional gaze that he was more known for. His tone had followed suit, as though nothing had happened at all. Was he apologizing for his conduct earlier? Or for hugging her? Probably both. "A lot's happened. If you don't mind, I'd prefer if we started making our way to town. I still have a job to do, and honestly I don't want to stay anywhere near the forest longer than I have to. I'll explain on the way. It'll be a bit of a walk, mind. Nobody dares live anywhere close to the place."
With that, he started to walk. If she followed along, he'd begin his explanation.
"For starters, whether I died or not, I couldn't tell you. The assassin stabbed me, I stabbed him, and then I was here."
She said there was a funeral. No body. Had he been transported here, body and all? He wasn't wounded when he had woken up, but... It seemed that was still yet another mystery that would never be solved. But there was still one he needed to know, for sure.
"You're in a land called Zephon. Contained in a world that appears to serve as a melting pot between different worlds, different timelines and even different eras of the same timelines and worlds. Many people I've met have the same story you and I do, being suddenly transported here. Nobody knows us, or heard of where we came from. All of them have their own stories of their own homelands that you'd never find on a map here. A co-worker of mine even told me she met someone from her own world, but in a much younger form, from before they had even met."
He pulled out his canteen, pouring a bit into his hand to then dip onto his head. His long blonde hair flowed downwards as it was drenched, but it made sense. He was still sweating bullets after the fight. He then took a drink for himself, before offering the canteen to her.
"I've been here two years. There seems to be no way back of your own volition. Some people have disappeared at random, and you suddenly have a difficult time remembering their names or how you knew them, so it's unknown if they have been sent back. I've kind of accepted that I'm not going back."
Like it or not, Lucis was a hellscape now anyway, so he didn't miss it as much as he thought he would after the initial shock. But at least it was one freed of the daemons and the scourge. And that meant that it was a land that no longer needed a Caius. Here... Here he was needed.
"I... Found people from Lucis here. But none of them knew me. I even recently ran into His Majesty, but..." he trailed off, biting his lip. "... He doesn't know me. Which considering my last time in Lucis, was obviously a bit of a blow. It turns out he's from a timeline where he died saving Lucis from the Starscourge, not the same one that you and I are from. He, his retinue and most people of Lucis I've met appear to be from the same version of Lucis. While I've been..."
An outlier. An outsider. Someone who didn't belong with them. Perhaps it would soon enough start making sense to Valora why he had reacted the way he did.
"I've gone back to my old job as a hunter and mercenary. I formed a guild called the Dragonblades with a skilled combatant that goes by Celes. We hunt monsters and bandits, helping people best we can in the jobs we specialize in. With it being our way of doing good and preparing ourselves for when things hit the fan. Which they do. Often. We've taken a role as unofficial peacekeepers, in a sense. I didn't have any connections to rely on, or a Kingsglaive to go back to, so I had to make do. I'm quite happy where I am, though."
Of course, there was still one thing bothering him...
He stopped, and turned to her. "I'll answer anymore questions you might have, but... I need to ask. This has been bothering me for years, and now that you're here... I need to know."
He took a breath. His eyes widened just a little, and he soon after held his breath a little in anticipation once he spoke.
"His Majesty. The one from our world. Is he safe? Did he survive the attempt on his life?"
