An apology, eh? Well, that was better. She felt a little guilty about not being very receptive to the embrace, so she gently patted his shoulder. Yep. Just some good ol’ coworkers, hanging out. Was this supposed to be awkward? Because she felt a little awkward. Though, as Caius explained the circumstances, she would begin to understand why he did it.
“Town. Right. Let’s get a move on.” Nodding along, she followed after him. A town was probably for the best. She could gather more intel, learn more about her situation. It was better for her to get a move on than to just sit around. Besides, Caius would be her best resource in learning about this place. She had to utilize him if she wanted to get back home. At least Caius hadn’t willingly come here. He hadn’t abandoned the Kingsglaive, he hadn’t betrayed Noctis. That was...only slightly comforting. That meant she had no reason to be angry at Caius, which was a relief for her. That meant she could try to enjoy their reunion.
Zephron...the last thing she wanted was to be away from home. Her life wasn’t perfect, but she liked it. It was, she had a meaning to her life. So this was a place where people were torn from their own worlds, forced into this one...wasn’t that strange? What was going on here, exactly? What caused people to be brought here? As she mulled it over, he took his canteen, taking a drink from it. Must be nice to live in a world without COVID. His next words gave her pause.
“You’re joking.” She couldn’t go home? She couldn’t return to Lucis? Vanora’s face fell. “There has to be some way to get back. Have you really checked everything? Maybe there’s something you overlooked--” As he continued to speak on his experiences, she grew even more visibly upset, silent as she let it all sink in. There wasn’t much going for her to begin with, but the Kingsglaive had given her a new meaning in life. To be without that...what was she supposed to do now?
What he offered with the Dragonsblade sounded tempting, as close to what she had back home as she could probably get, but...was there truly no way back? Did she have to accept her fate here? Was she forced to stay here? Did she have to find a new meaning to her life?
The ginger looked Caius square in the face, giving a curt nod. “Yeah, Noctis-- Er...our Noctis, is alive and well. He makes a good king, you know. Lucis is in the best shape it’s been in since...well, forever. It’s...a shame you couldn’t see it.” She offered a tiny smile. Although she wasn’t really in a smiling mood, she had to at least reassure him that his efforts weren’t in vain.
“So...meeting a different version of His Majesty...must’ve been quite the trip. Did ya’ try to leave a good first impression? Wait. Could he even become royalty here? No way, right? Not like he has any ruling family here. Damn...we got no hopes of a Kingsglaive here, huh?” It was better to not dwell on how upset she felt. It certainly wasn’t Caius’s fault, so she shouldn’t take it out on him.

He survived.
It was like a world had been lifted off the shoulders of Caius. For two long years he had shouldered that burden. For two long years, he had been left wondering if he had failed in his mission to protect His Highness. There might be a Noctis here, but at the end of the day, there was one man he swore fealty to, and Caius had one job. And that had been to protect him, even to the death. That was what he had done. He had died protecting his King, his King had survived, and his memory had been buried. There was no longer a need for a Caius there. They were safe, they could manage.
He could finally move on.
Here was where he belonged. With The Dragonblades. With Celes and the others. Here was where he was needed, and here was perhaps where he could finally start his life anew.
He bowed his head as he spoke quietly.
"Thank you."
Now, it was time to get to business. She still didn't believe he had checked everything. That there had to be a way home and he had just been incompetent. She was in the same position he had been in all those years ago, scrambling to get back home. Eventually it'd sink in proper she was here for the long haul. "Vanora, I've been all over the continent" he brought up. "You know me well enough to know I don't exactly stay in one place for very long. There are four countries throughout the continent of Zephon. Torensten, Provo, Sonora and Reikin. I’ve seen all of them. I haven’t seen a single trace of a way to get home. I’ve learned plenty about people getting here, and all their circumstances. Some just suddenly appeared here, some said they were dead and yet were somehow here anyway. Some even from Lucis’ past… Which we’ll need to talk about, by the way.”
He shrugged at the bit about Noctis becoming royalty here. "Probably not. They have a pretty established ruling base in each country. And he doesn't even know how to make Kingsglaive. Trust me, we tried. If we're lucky, Kingsglaive from the past might still pop in. I met one recently, from King Regis' era. Goes by Nyx."
With that out of the way, something did come to mind. He pointed back the way they came. "And that back there is the Headstone Forest. Place knows your memories, screws with your head. Projects illusions to lure you in, bring you deep into the woods and then puts those projections over monsters for them to feed on you. I was on a job looking for a woman that disappeared this way" he revealed, frowning at that.
He took a breath. Settled himself. "I'll be honest, Vanora. You might just have the worst luck in the world" Caius admitted, managing the twitches of an amused smile as he tried to forget about the ill-fated job. "Having your Zephon arrival point be the Headstone Forest of all places? You might just be cursed."
He thanked her, though she felt she hadn’t done much. Whatever the reason, the subtle change in his posture indicated that what was said had done a lot for him. That was...good to know. He'd been here for two years, huh? That seemed crazy to her. How did he manage to adjust, knowing he couldn't go back? Was there nothing for him to go back to? Vanora knew little about Caius's personal life, but she did know one thing; there was no family at his funeral. She could sympathize with that. She wanted to get back home, but...outside of the Kingsglaive, there was nothing waiting for her there. In all those years after she had been separated from her family, she had seen no sight of them. They were likely dead. No one else was waiting for her, no one was hoping for her to come home. They would have a funeral for her as they had with Caius, and they'd go on with their lives. Was this...a better option for her? A fresh start with no ties, nothing holding her back? Somehow...starting over seemed almost scarier.
"No way home...shit." Vanora shook her head. Well, if Caius had truly looked all over, and it had been two years already...that meant she had to get used to her new home. "Zephon...I mean, at least it looks pretty decent. Maybe you could show me around a bit, help me get my bearings."
A boisterous laugh left the female, rolling her eyes. "I was born with bad luck, Dragelion! Do you know how I ended up here? At least you had a warrior's way out. Me? I fell into the damn Duscae Crater! I don't even know how it happened, guess I lost my footing or something...and then I run into you, who tries to blow my head off." She grinned at him. Yeah, sure, she was scared about what the future held for her. She was stranded in a new world with no clue what to do with herself. But hey, things could always be worse?
"I didn't even get to see any illusions? A shame. That'll make a boring story to tell. It would be so much more fun if I told people I came out, fighting my own demons. Instead, I get escorted out by you. I uh...thanks for that, by the way. Even if you were threatening to kill me and all."

He hated to say it, but... What was left of Lucis was a hole. One that there wasn't really anything left for him there. He had no family -- bandits had taken his family long ago. He had his team, but by the end of the ten years, and the end of the darkness... Caius didn't know how to be social. He had spent so much of that time alone. By himself, barely scraping by monsters far bigger and stronger than him, by the skin of his teeth. Nobody had been able to take him in when his parents died. Everyone was too busy fending for themselves and anyone who might have was no longer alive. Caius had to fend for himself for so many years that beyond business... He didn't know how to be a functioning member of society anymore in a lot of ways. He'd been unable to get close to his team. He had spent most of that decade by himself, and he spent much of his free time by himself after too. He just... Didn't know anything else.
He had no reason to go back. His mission there was over. Lucis was a hole that was going to take far beyond his lifetime to rebuild. And they didn't need him for that. He had done his job, and he couldn't go back even if he wanted to.
Here? Here, there were plants, animals, green and life... And if they wanted it to stay that way, and not have it become another Lucis, then Caius needed to do his part. They needed him here. So here he stayed. And perhaps when his mission was over here... Maybe one day he could learn to settle down. Learn to be a person again. But for now, the mission came first. In Lucis, he had one thing. A purpose. And now, he had that here too.
He chuckled a bit at her remarks. "You got out lucky in a way. Yeah your spawn point sucked, but I knew the way out, even if I didn't think you were real. You got off far easier than you would have otherwise. No good stories are told out of trips to the Forest. Just stuff you never want to think about again. I wouldn't suggest going back unless you had to."
"Well... The Dragonblades are always hiring" he remarked with a cheeky smile, his lighter side finally starting to come back out. One he didn't have much chance to show back home. It was clear in his expressions, his body language, his voice... Even if he was still the serious businessman that he had been before, Zephon and its people had changed him. Celes and the Dragonblades had changed him. They helped fix so much of what the world of darkness had broken. He almost seemed human again.
He nodded his head then, when it came to showing her around. "I'd be happy to show you around a bit. Once we've hit up the town and reported back, I'm heading back to Torensten, where we operate from. You're free to come along if you wish" he offered. "Otherwise I can escort you wherever you want to go before we part, if you prefer that. Your call."
“Would I have gotten off so easy if you blew off my head? I could see it in your eyes, you were tempted.” Not that she could blame him, it sounded like he had some bad experiences with the forest. There was no reason to give him grief because he was mistaken. “Nah, but...I guess things did work out in my favor. I woke up on some soft, marshy ground, I can still fight, and I got myself a free tour guide. Things could be way worse.”
Vanora mulled it over. Dragonblades...that sounded interesting. She wasn’t really sure what else to do. Sure, she could probably try to go back to the nomadic life, wandering around Zephron in search of work, a purpose...but why do that when she could potentially have a purpose here? The way Caius’s demeanor changed also implied it was something important to him, something he was proud of. Well...maybe it couldn’t be too bad to give it a try. What was the worst that could happen? She could dislike it and decide to leave, but that was easy.
Ah, what the hell.
“Huh, I guess I could check it out. I mean, you seem to be really into it. It’s gotta be impressive.” Though she would certainly miss the Kingsglaive, and it was likely that she would still try to look for a way home, it would give her some sense of normalcy in this new world. Having a base of operations, a starting point...that would give her some time to think about what she wanted to do. She wouldn’t have to worry about what she was doing or where she was going next. Maybe...this would be good for her.
Vanora smirked. “Am I gettin’ a cut? Since I helped you with those goblins and all.” Joking, of course. “I deserve a welcome gift, don’t you think?”

"Course I was" he remarked with a casual shrug in turn. As if it was totally normal that he had been tempted to blow her head off. "You see monsters take the shapes of people you actually like enough times, you'd want to blow their heads off on sight too. I was just hoping that you weren't some monster stupid enough to continue to follow me even after I killed your friends" he brought up, managing a cheeky smile. She said she'd check out the Dragonblades though, which got a big smile out of him. He was sure she'd still try to find a way home. He'd done it too, even if he hadn't been successful. But he was sure that over time, she'd find her niche here. There were a lot of people that needed the Kingsglaive right now. More than Lucis did.
He nodded his head. "90%. We take 10. Just enough to put a decent cut into the guild's pool to keep our headquarters and the base we're trying to get in Provo open. Seeing as anyone who's a member or affiliate can sleep in them if there's an open room, that pays off for you most of the time. We also help with equipment and training if you need it" he brought up, before he stopped, seeming to realize what she meant. "Oh, oh you meant for this job. Unfortunately, no" he brought up, laughing a little. "My job was to find the girl. I killed the goblins for sport" he remarked bluntly. "Thanks, though. Buy you a drink?"
"For sport" was perhaps understating it. They had killed the girl and tried to use her body to lure him into their grove for them to swarm him. Caius had flown into a silent rage and killed as many as he could for it.
"Town's close" he brought up. "Once I finish my business, we'll hitch chocobos and head to Torensten. Then I imagine you'll want to sleep."
That was going to be something for her, wasn't it? Chocobos were barely even alive anymore in Lucis. Much less widely available for basic travel.
Ha! He had jokes! Caius must have been doing better here. Even back in the Kingsglaive, he wasn’t this cheery. Even just showing interest in his little Dragonsblade group seemed to make him light up. “Tch, just a drink? At least buy me a meal! I had to deal with the trauma of an old coworker trying to kill me, that’s gotta count for some sympathy!” Like she actually wanted pity. No, she was just playing around with him. Wait...did they even accept gil here? Was she actually broke? Ah crap...she had to make sure, or else she’d have to get to work as soon as possible. It would be nice to get to relax a bit beforehand, but she was open to seeing what she had to do.
Vanora had to admit, it was a good deal. A place to rest, jobs to take up, connections to people in the city...it was almost too good to be true. She had joked about having bad luck, but it felt like her luck was actually pretty decent. Who knows, a new world, new Vanora?
”Chocobos?” Her eyes lit up at the word. “I...I haven’t seen a chocobo in ages. I don’t even know if I can remember how to ride one!” She laughed happily, excited at the thought of riding one of the feathery beasts. She felt like a kid! “Okay...maybe Zephron is growing on me. We’re off to a pretty decent start so far.”
The redhead was far more excited now, eager to see the chocobos. “Have you run into any problems here? You seem to have it made. Your own guild, chocobos, the land here is beautiful...how long did it take ya’ to get to this point? At what time did you decide to stay here and make something for yourself?”

"Alright, alright. Just this once considering you just got here" he remarked with a small laugh. They accepted his gil when he got here, though Sonora probably wouldn't. Sonora had their own currency and he'd needed to exchange it at Provo before travelling over there. The rates were an absolute hock though. Sonora really was egotistical about the worth of their coin. And just in general, really. Though Caius got a big laugh out of her suddenly lighting up when it came to chocobos. "I actually grew up on a chocobo farm. Shame it didn't last, but I've always adored them. I considered maybe raising one of my own, but I have my own mount to manage as it is. I'd have brought him, but I honestly don't like bringing him to the Headstone Forest. That, and he's earned a little break anyway" he admitted. It was the first time Caius had talked about his past at all to any of his former teammates. So this was a day.
She asked if he ran into any problems, and he scratched his head. "Honestly... Yeah. When I first got here, I was a lot like you. Kinda freaking out, and in my case I didn't have anybody. I wandered everywhere I could trying to find a way home, desperate to get back, even considered some... Extreme options at first when I realized I couldn't" he admitted softly, frowning a moment at the thought. Not his finest hour. "But I picked myself up. Got into mercenary work. I used to be a hunter, so it fit naturally. Eventually I started meeting people and began putting together my own team. They may not be the Kingsglaive, but I couldn't be happier and more filled with purpose working with them. We do a lot of good, or at least I'd like to hope we do. But it took me a long while to get to this point."
He mulled it over a bit as the town came into sight. "Right now we're essentially at war with a bandit group called the Original Sin. Human trafficking, magical fraud, even at one point killing and replacing an entire village to set a trap for passerbys. They're incredibly dangerous. And we've managed to peeve them off more than enough times to merit their ire. So your timing couldn't be better."
They found themselves in a snug little town. It was clearly far less technologically advanced than Lucis. But it wasn't like they had much chance to play with tech in the last decade in Lucis anyway, considering the circumstances. But this would still likely be a shock for Vanora. While cars could be seen here and there, they were nowhere near as sleek and new looking as one would find in Lucis.
Torensten was even less technologically advanced. But perhaps the new armored jacket that Caius had forged recently would be an indicator to Vanora of just what to expect. He notably wasn't wearing his Kingsglaive garb anymore. He did still have it, but it was at home. He was a Dragonblade now.
Caius quickly enough paid for their chocobos, including hers since apparently he was spoiling the lady today, and urged her to hop onto hers so they could get going.
A free meal and drinks? Score! That was exactly what she needed right now. They’d be on their way and sitting down for dinner before they knew it! “Y’know, I think I misjudged you Caius. You’re so generous.” She chuckled to herself. It was nice to learn more about Caius. Back on Lucis, she never really got the chance to learn about him. They knew each other in passing, she knew how serious and quiet he was, but never knew anything in depth. A shame, since Caius seemed to be a pretty stand-up guy. Or...was he only like that after leaving Eos? Did his time in this world change him, since he hadn’t had the darkness of the world weighing him down?
”Having your own chocobo...I can’t even believe that’s a possibility. I’ve been so used to never seeing them…" Oh, he had another mount? She wondered what it was. She wasn’t really one to have a mount herself, but maybe that was because of the state Eos was in. Riding a chocobo around...she would look ridiculous, but why would she care about what others thought? Chocobos were fun. Maybe she’d save up some of the money she got from some of her jobs? Ah man, now she was getting excited! "So like...if someone were to get one, you'd know how to take care of it?" She asked, trying to appear nonchalant. Nice try, Vanora, he already saw how excited you got.
Allowing him to go on about his experience, she nodded along. Ah, there was the town. It wasn’t anything to write home about, but the fact that a little town like this could just peacefully exist...it was reminiscent of how things were in Eos all those years ago. No worries about daemons, no concerns…
Extreme methods? The meaning was left unsaid, though it made a certain tension in the air. Would that even work? Well, she couldn’t necessarily do that herself. Something like that was...outside of her abilities. She was glad that Caius couldn’t bring himself to do it either. ”Original Sin?” She repeated, her nose scrunching up. ”Edgy. Well, I’m gonna enjoy being part of the Dragonsblade if it includes getting rid of people like that. I enjoy a good fight, but I enjoy it more if it includes getting rid of some subhuman garbage like that.”
The lack of technological advancement was certainly noticed. While not a drastic enough change to warrant a reaction out of her, she did make note of it. These days, she hadn’t done much with the technology in Eos anyways. However, was the rest of Zephron like this? She could likely adjust, even if it would be a bit strange to do so.
Chocobos. Sweet, innocent, adorable chocobos. Vanora’s eyes widened as soon as she saw them. It was nostalgic, something she hadn’t felt in awhile. How long had it been since she had seen one? As Caius paid, she was already busy petting the beasts, admiring the softness of their vibrant feathers. Okay, yeah. Zephron wasn’t so bad.
“Sweet baby...oh, you’re an angel!” She cooed to the bird as Caius paid for them. When she heard her companion approaching, she composed herself and cleared her throat. “Thanks. I’ll repay you once I get back on my feet.”
Hopping atop the chocobo, she looked a little uneasy. After all, it had been over ten years since she was last able to ride one, and she had gotten much taller. She was able to keep her balance and waited for Caius to lead the way, following after him.

"There was hardly any room to be in Lucis" he commented with a shrug. He was sure more people would have been back home if they had the means. But back then, nobody had the means. It was every man for himself, for better or for worse. Typically for worse, considering the way he had ended up growing up. Perhaps that was why he'd never opened up to the Kingsglaive. He had never been able to learn to trust people. He'd been almost completely isolated for nearly a decade at that point, only speaking to the hunters at times when they had tips for him, or prospective clients. He'd had no reason to otherwise and after what had happened with the bandits... It was hard to blame him for not trusting people enough in the first place, but all that time in isolation, well... It had done its damage. Only here had it begun to heal, bit by bit.
Oh, he knew full well where she was going with the chocobo talk. He'd considered getting one himself, just for the familiarity... But with Vordun, he had no real reason to and he wouldn't be around enough to take care of it. Perhaps one day when he could afford to be home more. And when he could shake off these workaholic addictions that had more or less consumed his life at this point. "It's been a long time, but I at least know how to keep them fed and taken care of when I rent them. While they'll wark back home on their own eventually, I like to try and make their time with me as comfortable as I can."
Was that a pun? That was a pun. Delivered in the driest way possible, and yet there it was. At least she was amenable to dealing with the Original Sin. "We're going to need all the help we can get" he answered to that as he wrapped up his chocobo rental transaction. Though he couldn't help the small smile that formed when she first saw the chocobo and the reaction that followed. When she offered to repay him, he dismissed it with a hand. "No need. Least I can do."
With that, he held out a hand to his rental chocobo to let them sniff at it and see he meant no harm, before he scratched behind its ears. He smiled warmly as he placed his forehead against theirs. Talking about the old chocobo farm had made him a little nostalgic... Being able to nestle against a chocob again brought back memories.
With that, he mounted and was ready to go. He led the way, and watched her chocobo follow soon after.
"Any idea what you want to do once we've gotten you settled in?"
