Sabin didn't know what to expect from his foray into the healing arts but he definitely did not expect a frog hurled at his face in what, apparently, was an expression of gratitude in whatever culture this... creature...? came from. His ordinarily catlike reflexes only barely saved him from the amphibian hitting him square in the mouth as he caught the frog half an inch before impact. He stared at its dull, bulging eyes. It stared back.
Then the spears came down upon the vessel like a hail of cactuar needles. With the frog in one hand, Sabin ducked, bobbed, weaved, flipped, corkscrewed through the deadly rain of weaponry. He grabbed a sailor by the collar and yanked him backwards, a spear embedding itself in the deck where he once stood.
Sabin looked over the deck, the spearshafts jutting up out of every surface, the dead men splayed out on the wood, their blood washed away by the storm. He set his jaw and narrowed his eyes and as the sahagin scaled the ship Sabin found himself filled with a deep fury. He set the frog aside on a barrel and clenched his fists tight. A white glow enveloped them.
"Well, come on!" he shouted at the sahagin, and when some of the creatures began to rush him he put his hands together and fired off a great blast of pure chi that lit up the scene like lightning. It slammed into one of the creatures, shooting it clear off the deck of the ship and into the raging waters.
The others tried to flank him and Sabin once again channeled his energy, a fiery glow emanating from his person as blazing doubles of himself shot out with punches, kicks, knees, striking at all the creatures who surrounded him, scorching their skin with every blazing impact.
[attr="class","rem4"]Notes: casted Protectga on the party; 1 Sahagin squished with Seraphim Strike
Just when Rem thought things were going bad enough as they were, well…
Let’s just say things went from bad to “oh dear Vermillion Crystal” all too quickly in the span of a few moments. While she was not familiar with the ‘Sahagin’ class of monster, the fact that they had started picking off some of the crew that they were traveling with was bad enough—were they going to be the ones left to pilot this strange thing they were riding on at the moment?!
Sure, she knew how to somewhat maneuver an air ship, but water ships were an entirely different thing!
Seeing that everyone was being assaulted, the then concentrated for a few moments, centering herself and finding her calm before holding her twin blades forward.
No, it wasn’t going to be Tornado, are you silly.
Instead, all those who had been summoned to deal with whatever monster this was received a Protective shell to help ward off the damage somewhat. To be honest it was Protectga, she’d charged it up, but that left her exposed for a few moments as the last of the spell settled into place and then—
A loud shrieking behind her made her turn around and blink—oh, Vermillion Bird, she was going to get caught!
…not really.
Spinning around as fast as she could on her heels, she then summoned up the magickal energies within and brought down a Seraphim Strike on the incoming Sahagin that had full intent on skewering her through the face.
At least that was one of them brought down, sent flying back into the incoming herd of what she guessed were three more.
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ATROCITIES COMMITTED
Awaken, great fiend, from the cold and deep
The sahagin had no idea who they were dealing with.
While their ambush was successful, they didn’t hold the advantage for long. Sahagin were sturdy creatures -- well armored by their scales and the shells on their backs. Still, they hadn’t expected such elite warriors on the back of this doomed vessel. One by one they fell, and yet urged on by their fiendish master, more came still to replace them.
Keimusho’s attack sliced through the immediate target, and while the first strike wasn’t enough to disable him, the second certainly was. By the fifth, he’d been cut straight through, shell and all, and had been blasted back into the mast, nearly dismantled. The force of Keimusho’s power thrust back the other three sahagin who had attempted to surround him, stunning them. Still, this relief wouldn’t last long. From behind them, another of the turtle-shelled guardians launched itself into a high jump, angled its trident down, and thrust itself back towards the deck, hoping to skewer the ninja from above.
The sahagin showed no favor between sailor or warrior. The volley that had preceded their assault had skewered several of the deckhands, pinning them to the wood, helpless. Caius cracks his blade through the skull of one, dodging another strike as the sahagin try to surround him. Four of them keep at a middle-distance, trying to stay out of distance of his sword blows with their much longer tridents that they stab forward like pitchforks. Above, there’s a startled cry. Three sahagin have jumped to the top of the mast, ripping the sails as they go. One lands at the top, cornering the keeper of the magic flame. Without it, the warriors will be fighting blind.
The ship is rocked violently by the storm. The deck tilts, causing several sailors to lose their balance as they go skittering on streams of slippery rainwater. The railing at the deck’s edge barely catch them as they scramble to regain their grip, eyes widening in horror at the sahagin already vaulting over the side to meet them. Sabin’s chi lights their eyes in a harsh contrast of yellow on green. His foes are thrust off the edge back into the water’s below, but those still hanging off the side need only a moment to take their places. One grabs a sailor and yanks him over with him. The screams are drowned by a boom of thunder.
Three sahagin creep towards Rem carefully, their beady reptilian eyes unknowable and alien. Maybe they’ve recognized the support she’s given her allies in defense. Maybe they simply think her weaker than the others, but there is a certain aggression to their approach, unhindered by caution. Her magic catches them by surprise, and as her strike lands on the first, the other two falter, startled though they quickly recover. One spins his trident around and launches into a high jump. The other rushes her from the ground level.
The first sahagin struck by Quina’s Aqua Breath is sent flying, its shell crushed as its ribs crack and it lets out one final gasp of air before landing in a heap on the deck. This doesn’t faze the others, however, who are used to the water and resistant to it. The first was caught unaware, but they will not be. They raise their tridents defensively as they approach, ready to thrust off the familiar element.
What does faze them, however, is Quina’s bellowing cry. The sahagin struggles in their grasp, screeching in a kind of primal fear. And it’s right to worry. As the forks and spoons increase their spinning and the qu thrusts the sahagin towards their mouth, it can only scream. Just scream before it’s done in a horrible crunch of bone, shell, and blood. The qu feels a familiar power rush through them. A new skill.
Shell Defense. When used, there is a very slight chance that a newly formed shell will negate all damage for one attack.
The scene is chaos. Between the raging storm, the battles, and the horrifying cuisine, it’s impossible to keep track of the situation in its entirety. As the assault carries on, a team of five sailors burst from the cabins carrying a large green crystal. It glows in the storm, its power dormant as it waits to counteract the raging seas and give them a momentary peace. The sailors set about their work when they too are confronted by a trio of sahagin. These monsters, however, do not strike them with their tridents. They raise their scaled hands and wide puffs of smoke erupt around the sailors. The men are obscured by a green, gray, blue miasma as they cry out in alarm -- a cry which is slowly turned to deep and torturous croaking.
Ribbit. Ribbit.
The smoke clears revealing a gathering of five large frogs as they squelch to the ship’s deck. The ribbiting grows panicked as they hop around, alarmed and confused. Miniature sailor hats have adhered themselves to their heads, and they scatter, each fleeing to a different warrior.
One scrambles for Keimusho and his kodachi blade. Another darts between the sahagins’ legs, making a dash for Caius. One hops on Sabin’s shoulder, croaking loudly in his ear. Another pauses in a moment of sudden clarity before making a wild break for Rem.
The last flees towards Quina -- the great and powerful monster who had so easily downed the sahagin already. Unknowing of its fate.
Quina's body SURGED with magical power as the energy of the turtle-fish-beast he had consumed flowed like the blood and bone down his throat, a series of golden plates falling into place all along his back in the shape of a shell! As sanguine dripped down from the open, eternal grin of the Qu, the other sahagin recoiled in shock and fear, their tridents once held high... now dropping in uncertainty! While all but one had survived the Aqua Breath, having seen what awaited them now on deck, it was a wonder why they didn't crave the fate Quina had in store for them before.
Death by one's own technique, after all, was surely superior to being eaten alive!
"Not enough..." Quina mused as he munched on the creature, raising his own trident-like fork up in the direction of his targets! "More... hungry for more!" Before he could actually move in on his prey, however, the ship would ROCK as if it had SLAMMED into a massive body below, SHIFT of his grounding so drastic that it sent the Qu FLYING hard to the deck below, rolling to a stop meters away, face-planted against the wooden planks! Shaking his head, the gourmand would slowly push himself up... only to come face-to-face with a small, smooth-skinned frog, a little hat-like thing resting between it's massive amphibian eyes! Quina froze, his starry eyes locked on the creature and the frog would too, in kind, the tongue already dripping with saltwater and spit seeming to utterly POUR with saliva as he locked onto his people's most delicious delicacy! Raw frog was almost like an elixir to a Qu, a food so delicious and hard-to-acquire that it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to pass up consuming one!
...And the odds were not in this thing's favor!
Lashing out quickly with a hand, Quina would SNAG the slippery-little amphibian, stuffing it into his thick, pink coat for later, something he could snack on when there weren't tasty fish-people about... but as soon as the frog found its place in its prison... the Qu had begun to notice more frogs! LOTS of frogs! Like... at least a dozen hopping around the deck like they've always been there!
"Oh... it like a miracle..." Quina whispered, THRUSTING his fork deep into the shell of a sahagin that backed away from one of the other warriors and into Quina's range! NEW MISSION! These guys could handle these fish-people! HEEEEE... would help save these froggies! Better a snack than something to scrape off the poop-deck after all! Rem's dance around the Sahagin would be interrupted as a ravenous Qu would suddenly TAKE her down from below, almost seeming to TACKLE at her legs as his hands groped ALL around her boots! No sooner than they hit the deck would Quina disappear into the fighting once again, a fresh, new frog stuffed into his jacket! Sahagin would aim to intercept Quina but they only got an odd stab in the chest (or three if they were unlucky) or a punch strong enough to FLOOR them instantly, the Qu's raw, carnal cravings for amphibian meat driving him to be even more horrifying than he already was!
Sabin was next, his aura and flaming kicks making short work of the Sahagin as they attempted to surround him! One would make a move on the man, aiming to stab him from behind... only for Quina's fork to STAB through the back of it's head and out the front, dropping it instantly and tossing it to the side with a flick of his wrist in one move! The Qu would then lunge at the larger man, almost as if his head would be the next to go... but the Qu would seemingly BARGE right past him, scooping up a frog resting on a crate nearby!
Caius a sight to see, his quickness with his dagger making short work of the more clumsy, rank-and-file aquatic soldiers. Unlike times past, however, Quina didn't actually need to fight through the invading monsters or toss Caius overboard to save the frogs! This one actually just hopped right up to him, hopping between the legs of the combatants as they fought before it too found a home in Quina's coat!
Finally there was Keimusho, slicing through the fish-men like they were bamboo-stalks on a cuttingboard! This one had Quina nervous, so fast was the ninja with his blade, the steel disappearing into after-images that sliced through both combatants AND the air surrounding yet another frog, dicing up the space around it like it were a steaming, well-seasons pot-roast! Taking his chances, Quina would THROW himself to the deck just as Keimusho dispatched another sahagin, his blade BARELY slipping over the top of the Qu's chef-hat as Quina's arms closed around the frog, cradling it to his chest as he slipped-and-slid ALL the way down to the other side of the boat! So slick was the deck, the Qu effectively made himself his own projectile, taking out a handful of invaders' legs out from under them as he slipped past!

A sahagin would try its luck at getting a strike on the ninja from behind. Thankfully the anima was there to notify the ninja of the incoming attack. "From above boss!" Enma warned the shinobi. Heading the warning, the ninja sidesteps the attack. The unsuccessful sahagin plunges its spear into wooden deck. With the new granted opportunity, the ninja turned towards the Sahagin and would swing his kodachi towards the Sahagin's head with the horizontal slash, Smite. A red light engulfed the blade and upon connecting with the shelled beast caused a swift burst of red energy to engulf the Sahagin.
Not long after the deck would be surrounded by frogs with sailor hats on top of their hats. It could only be Toad. Suddenly the same creature that was previously regurgitating bile into the ocean started collecting all of the sailor frogs. In its endeavor, it tossed itself near Keimusho, barely missing the edge of the kodachi blade. The ninja was initially boggled by this unorthodox attack, but he soon realized that a number of the Sahagin would be knocked to the ground as the creature catapulted itself the save that frog. Not knowing what plans (or horrors) that the creature had in store for the sailors he had "saved", Keimusho assumed that it gave the rest of them the opportunity to continue focusing on the remainder of the Sahagin.
The ninja would also take advantage of the opportunity that the creature made by knocking down the Sahagin. The ninja weaved his hands to form the seals Jin, Ten, and Chi. Once the combination for Doton was realized he placed his hands on the floor creating a circle of corrupted earth around the Sahagin that Quina knocked down. It would be a slow and painful death for the Sahagin that were unfortunate enough to be caught up in Doton,

The Dragonglaive
@tag Word Count: OOC: Caius is getting serious. Dialogue Color: 196fd1
The magic that the monsters had cast, turning the sailors into frogs was... Horrifying. Caius' eyes widened as he witnessed it, but it slowly faded into that cold, stone expression as he focused himself, deciding that the best thing to do was kill them as fast as he could. The problem was... There were so many.
It appeared that Vordun had sensed it at the same time as Caius, as the dragon hadn't hesitated to get up from its perch and lumber over at full speed, falling upon the creatures with a ferocious roar, snapping one up in his jaws. "Get a mana charge ready" Caius called to Rem, knowing that this needed to be finished off as soon as possible. The sails were being ripped, the sailors were in danger... This needed to end fast, or they would be screwed before the Kraken even got here. He needed to use his magic a fair bit. Luckily Rem was around, and hopefully would be able to restore his magic if he blew it out. Worst case scenario, if they could finish them off quick... He could restore his magic with a short period of inactivity. In a fight though, there typically wasn't a window to do so. Rem would be their best bet...
As Caius parried a blow and kicked one of the monsters overboard, he noticed the creature from before collecting the sailor frogs. This wouldn't normally be a concern, but there was something to its expression... Maybe he was just imagining things, but after seeing the creature eat one of the monsters whole? His inner sensors were going off like crazy. And was that drool hanging from its mouth?
Caius considered for a moment threatening the creature to get it to not eat the frogs. It was a heat of the moment kind of thing, but in the end... His gentler soul won out as he motioned to the frogs that Quina was stuffing.
"Do NOT eat those frogs. They are not real frogs" Caius spoke towards Quina with a firm, militaristic tone as he did his best to make the coming bluff as convincing as possible. "They are people frogs. They'll give you a REALLY bad tummy-ache. Like, really bad, tear through your stomach bad. And then you'll throw up everything you ate. Also we'll have no sailors to get us home, and then you won't be able to eat ever again" he remarked, making sure it was clear to Quina that eating the frogs was not an option, nor was it worth being potentially stranded.
With that... It was time.
"COME ON!" Caius growled, loosing a war cry to gain the attention of the creatures as he suddenly warped forward, plunging his blade into the skull of one out of nowhere as soon as another had swung at him. He warped again, knowing his magic would start to go down quickly if he kept it up, stabbing into the back of the one who had swung, before firing the gunblade through their torso. It was brutal, but effective.
"Blizzara!"
He had fired it behind him, hearing the inhuman footsteps of one of the creatures coming from nearby, hitting them dead on and freezing them solid as he picked the snowcone up with a glaive's strength, loosing a cry as he hurled it at another. Daggers were flung into the knees of another, taking it down to size as he re-summoned his sword, rolled forwards and finished it off. One more fell victim as Caius' weapons disappeared when they swung, surprising the monster who had stabbed a trident at him. Grabbing the trident's handle, he slammed it back into the creature's skull before loosing a hard kick to the mid-section, causing them to drop their weapon before he grabbed them by the head and slammed it with all his strength downwards into the ship's deck. With a punt, he sent them overboard. Fighting unarmed would conserve his magic a bit longer, buying Rem some time to fend for herself and restore his magic if she could... It was also a backup plan in case she was unable.
The urgency of the situation had awakened the all-business, more serious, and more violent side to Caius. There was no room for honor here. They were fighting for their lives.
The thought didn't take form that way. It wasn't a conscious thing. Just a feeling, beneath the urgency and adrenaline, that something was missing in all this chaos; the King of Figaro calling strategies and unleashing a hail of autocrossbow bolts into the seething mass of sahagin.
The creatures swarmed in limitless numbers, as though spawned from the sea spray crashing over the deck of the ship. The chaos intensified. The blood and the screaming and the flashes of spells, the roar of the sea and the wind, and the more the chaos grew the less Sabin thought. His actions were more and more instinct and reflex, his conscious mind receding and allowing the decade of martial training to take the reins of his person.
From somewhere to his right there came a horrific, inhuman scream. A fist slammed into the skull of one of the creatures. A flash of a trident in the corner of his eye. He bent backwards, the thrust of the weapon just centimeters past his nose. From somewhere behind him the continued shouting of sailors. He gripped the trident with both hands, each one in the space between the points, and twisted the weapon out of a sahagin's grip. Behind him, a strange noise, like a smoke bomb. Croaking? He threw the trident aside and blasted the sahagin square in the head with an Aura Bolt.
Something landed on his shoulder, croaked in his ear. By the time he recognized what it was, Quina had already swept through like a force of nature and scooped it up.
"Huh?" he said, broken free of his flow state, suddenly trying to make sense of things like he'd come into a play halfway through.
He shot a look around the scene as Quina moved on to the other fighters on deck, scooping up the amphibians that had run to them, and when Caius spoke up everything clicked. He hadn't seen people turned into frogs before, but the Imp magic of his home world was similar enough.
A grim fate if they didn't clear the monsters out of here.
Sabin stepped backwards towards the center of the deck, facing out, and took a deep breath.
"Nobody get in front of me!" he warned, "I'm going to clean the deck!"
He didn't see any of his allies or the sailors in his direct path, and so in that moment he took a deep breath and summoned up the energy for a sweeping Air Blade, creating a powerful gust to try and sweep that section of the deck clear. If they couldn't get rid of these creatures quickly they were just fixing a leaky dam with tissues.
[attr="class","rem4"]Notes: 2 more Sahagin wrecked with Seraphim Strike. Manalchemy in preparation for MP recovery across all those tagged.
How was she supposed to hear anything over the incredibly loud racket? This was unbelievable.
Everyone was—basically everywhere, and it was a horrific mess. See, normally this would have been fine (she’s fought in much worse) but a heavy downpour in the middle of Vermillion-knew-where?
This was another thing entirely.
She almost blinked and shrieked as she saw… something suspicious head her way before taking a leap and attempting to hide itself in her clothes! Okay, that was disgusting!
Not to mention it felt really slimy, too!
Making sure to stay well back (as she did notice someone was getting ready for an area of effect move) she decided to pick off several more of the straggling Sahagin, bringing down another Seraphim Strike on another one that was intent on skewering her alive.
Not today, fiend! She thought to herself as she somersaulted backwards, almost sent flying by the slippery landing but managing to stab one of her daggers into the deck and prevent herself from slipping entirely. Another fiend was coming up behind her, and so was quickly sent packing with another blast of holy energy—a second Seraphim Strike crashing down on its head.
And yet, and yet—
The weird, slimy thing was… croaking… from inside her clothes!
What in the name of Orience?!
Thankfully her ears had registered Caius's words. Once she was done, she quickly prepared a Manalchemy that would replenish all friendly party members' MP once there was a lull in the battle.
The sahagin were outmatched from the start. There was no way that they could have known that, of course, but as they were struck by blades and punches and ninja seals, it became quickly apparent that they had never stood a chance. A few take their final moments to jump, landing in the water like falling stones to take their chances with their fiendish master. More, however, merely die. This crew was not one to be trifled with, and they learn that truth in the end.
The threat is not over, however, as the ship gives a massive, creaking heave that nearly topples it sideways. A great crash of water comes down upon the deck like a tidal wave, smashing into the sailing crew and nearly drowning them where they stand. A muffled shout cries over the squalor, ”First Mate Biggs! Second Mate Wedge! Where’s the crystal? We won’t stand a chance if we don’t calm this storm!”
”Missing in action, sir! The crystal’s in position, but the mages we brought have vanished!”
Cursing. ”We need them! They’re the only ones with the power to use this damned thing!”
Out on the deck, roped in place, a massive crystal glows a dim blue-green. It sits abandoned exactly where the sailors had left it before they were replaced by frantically hopping frogs. The frog in Rem’s jacket croaks mournfully, longing to complete the duties so cruelly denied to him.
The light flickers. For a moment, the ship is cast in deep, inky darkness. A bolt of lightning shoots across the sky, illuminating the ship in harsh silhouettes, and then the magical flame at the top of the mast reignites. A sagahin is balanced at the top of the sail and spins its trident to plant it into the fiery charm for the final time.
Should this light be lost then the ship will be cursed to drift in darkness. Forever.
Quina just didn't understand what all the fuss was about! Everyone was yelling at him NOT to eat the most delicious thing on the planet (especially now that he had a whole jacket-full of them)! Everyone was so concerned, calling them "fake" or "not real" frogs, desperately trying to sway the Qu NOT to chow down right away! at each attempt, the chef only looked a them oddly, as if they had just taken off their pants and wore them as a hat, each effort seemingly growing more and more worried and desperate... almost as if THEY wanted some too!
"Oh, they so silly!" Quina laughed, nuzzling his favorite munchies affectionately as he climbed to his feet! "If they want some, they should ask! It stupid to no say what you- WAAAAH!" The ship would ROCK hard to the side, the ocean spilling over onto the deck, washing away corpse and live fish-man alike... while also spraying the moisture-sensative skin of Quina with even MORE disgusting salt-water! SLAMMING to the deck once again, the chef's little passengers were lucky he landed back-first, the frogs writhing and squirming under his jacket fabric, as if trying to warn him of the going's on outside! Letting out a little groan, the Qu would roll limply over on his front, struggling to crawl towards the inside of the ship... He wasn't gonna be able to protect his munchies in this place... not until the ocean calmed down! Opening the door to the inside of the ship, Quina would reach into his jackets and throw out frog after frog through the door... before slamming it shut, trapping them inside! If he no could eat them, then NOBODY no could eat them! Not ocean, not shipmates! Not even that sagahin up there poking at the flame...
Wait, what?
It was only a glimpse, visible only for a moment as lightning worthy of Rumuh struck the ocean's surface angrily, the sight of a (perhaps the) surviving Sagahin, his fork pointed menacingly at the light above! As a piece of stray, broken ship CRASHED down upon the Qu's head, cracking in half upon impact and flying across the rocking deck, Quina vaguely recalled one of the ship-guys mentioning that it was THIS flame that would help them get back to shore... If they didn't have it.... they'd be out here forever!
...And that just wouldn't DO! There wasn't any froggies in the ocean! Everyone knew that!
opening his mouth wide, Quina would unleash a barrage of 1,000 Needles upon the sagahin aiming to rip him (and by extension, the sail) UP with needles flying at mach speeds! Almost a beam of sharpness would threaten the very life of the fishman himself and, content with his work, Quina would hop back up again, finding strength in curiosity as he meandered over the crystal thingy sitting... completely alone in the center of the deck!
"I no see thing like this before..." Quina mused, poking at it with his finger. "I taste maybe!" ...before poking at it with his tongue! If he couldn't have froggies right now, maybe this rock thing would be a tasty replacement!
