The storm has raged for fifteen days and fifteen nights with no end in sight. The docks are swept by the crashing waves, and you have to grab the creaking wooden posts to withstand them. You are soaked through to your bones, shivering, breathless. The rain assaults your eyes, leaving only blurry shapes through the gale.
At the end of the dock, a ship rides the coastal waves. The sailors scramble to prepare it for the harrowing task ahead. The wood creaks. The ropes thrash in the wind. After some time, the boarding ramp is lowered, and they usher you on board.
Many have been lost to these waters and the fiends that lurk within. As the ship makes its unsteady way out of the darkened harbor, it feels almost certain that you will be the next to join them.
Torensten is in a state of emergency, and for your own reasons, you’ve heeded the call. King Hremit has worked tirelessly with the sages at the University of the Magi to supply you with aid. Firstly, they’ve cast protective charms on the ship, hoping that when activated, they will counteract the corruption and still the surrounding seas for exactly an hour. Secondly, they’ve fashioned a spotlight made of unquenchable fire and attached it to the mast so that you can see through the blackened night. Finally, pendants were crafted using shards excavated from the Metaia Temple’s Earth Crystal. These should guide you to the Kraken and the Water Shrine respectively.
All of these feel like nothing but worthless trinkets as the coast disappears from sight and there is nothing but rolling waves and the deep bellow of thunder. You lost your sister ships some time ago, and you can only hope that they too will find their destination safely.
Until then, there are only your fellow adventurers and the sailors rushing about in a constant state of urgency. Though the pendant guides you, there is no end in sight.
Guttural moans and heaving gasps could be heard over the wailing winds and thrashing ocean, a lone creature clutching to the edge of the ship as he hung halfway over as his bowls were ejected violently from between massive jaws! Quina didn't think WATER-ships would be all that much different from their air-borne cousins, slightly swaying in the sky and cutting through the water like a knife through delicious melted butter... But BOY was he wrong... How CRUEL this ride was on the stomach of the gourmand aspirant! It was like he was seeing every single meal come up from the past YEAR all at once, his poor belly cramping so deeply, it was as if he had accidentally swallowed a handful of silverware... without chewing! His head was spinning faster than those storms all that time ago, his star-shaped eyes swirling in their sockets as hat drooped nearly off his head as if reflecting his rather ILL humor!
Even as chaos itself was made manifest upon the ocean's surface, even as the sky and see seemed to nearly tear themselves apart, there was nothing the blue-mage could do but wallow in his own misery as the uncomfortably salty sea air and rain flicked at his face an uncountable number of times. Even as the sea SPLASHED at his face, nearly tossing his own vomit back at it, he dared not go back below deck lest he splatter the walls, the floors, his own hammock in the stuff! It seemed as if Quina's own pleasure and passion was his downfall this day fore as long as there was even a speck of food in his belly, the poor chef would NEVER be able to leave the infernal, salty grip of the ocean!
"This worst... *BURP* .....ugh...idea I ever had...." The Qu moaned pitifully, leaning slightly off the rim of the ship, gazing back across the deck. "How they travel.... on these... THINGS.... It stupid and crazy.... Crazy and... uuuuuuurp... oh-" "BLLLLLAAARGH!"
Quina threw himself back at the Ship's rim, hurling up what remained of yesterday's breakfast overboard just as his face cleared the edge! God, it wasn't even that much... as Quina watched an entire fish the size of himself disappear into the ocean depths... a small tear rolled down his cheek... one he quickly lapped back up! Even sick, he could feel the hungry gnarls of his stomach EATING itself as the sickness twisted and crushed his guts within... So much pain, so many mixed messages... Quina couldn't even...
"I hate self..." he whimpered softly, pressing his forehead against the rim of the ship. "Hate.... hate... hate..."

The situation was much to dire for the ninja not to volunteer his services. In his mind, if people were in need and if he were in a position to help them, then there was no reason not to do so. That was not to mention that the word had been sent in from King Hremit himself. That in itself showed how dire the situation was. It wasn't all that long ago that the very same King crowned he and Caius: Champions of the Hunt. Since then he embedded the medallion given to him by the King onto the sheath of the sword.
Keimusho was starting to realize that Torensten was always in some sort of bind or another. Besides the freak accident that he and Caius had to resolve at the Festival of the Hunt. He had heard a handful of rumors of some area in the city receiving a fair bit of destruction from time to time. But this was something else. This storm has been raging for over two entire weeks. This storm was sure to cause more gradual destruction to Torensten if not the entirety of Serentestra if left unchecked.
To deal with the severity of the situation, a number of ships have been sent to deal with two situation. Some to deal with a Kraken and another to find the source of the storm. At this point, slaying giant monsters was starting to become a science. First a Behemoth and then that tusked-monster that broke through the barrier during the festival. This kraken would be no different.
The Au Ra tried to think of the last time he was boarding a ship and he remembered the Ruby Sea and how The Confederacy extorted the Ruby Tithe out of all who traveled through there to either Kugane or Yanxia. He was sure that it fetched a chunk out of the pockets of those who traveled between those two places frequently.
The anima within Keimusho's weapon would materialize itself. The oni-like spirit materialized next to the ninja's head, arms crossed. "So we're going to go kill a giant squid, what are you going to do as we wait?" The artificial soul asked. "Perhaps clear my mind through meditation," the ninja responds when suddenly...
"BLLLLLAAARGH!"
"That... would be a challenge," the anima remarks. Keimusho couldn't help agree. This combined with the sounds of raging waves and sounding thunders made for a quite unshunnable combination.

There was no room for subtlety. No opportunity for Caius to try and find a way for Vordun to hide and show up in stealth later. They were out to sea, they were about to fight what some described as a giant octopus monster that was so powerful, it was able to conjure this storm... A monster known only as The Kraken. Caius was aware that something like this required every inch of firepower that they could get, and immediately at that. And Vordun would never be able to see one of his flares from here. Much less with the storm. He either brought him, or he didn't. And Caius had made the decision from there. The presence of the horse-sized dragon on the ship had unnerved the other sailors at first, but those nerves had settled before too long when it was clear that all the drake was going to do was follow its master around, yawn and take naps in the shade. Also the storm. The storm and keeping the ship upright was a bit more of a priority right now.
Caius didn't need to be offered a reward to come aboard. This was the true job of the Dragonblades. To be here for threats such as these. Any gil reward would go towards either preparing him, or preparing the guild, for the next challenge. But he was glad that if he was to come out here, he had been paired with the shinobi Mu. The two of them had been crowned the Champions of the Hunt in the last festival by King Hremit himself, and had saved Torensten from a rampaging monster in the process, so the King had clearly hoped that with their teamwork, they would be able to strike a blow to it by putting them on a ship together. Caius was happy about that, that meant that who he worked with... Would be someone reliable.
It was a beacon of hope against the most terrifying thing he had ever seen.
... And that was whatever in the seven hells was shooting bile overboard.
The ungodly sounds it made were somehow more unsettling than the creaking of the ship itself as it threatened to capsize in the storm. Despite this, Caius and Vordun had settled down under a shaded area, with Caius sitting cross-legged against Vordun, while they shielded themselves from the rain. Caius' eyes were closed, trying to drown out the sounds as he mentally prepared for what was to come. Vordun meanwhile, was ready to roast whatever that creature was if it kept making those noises. But didn't out of courtesy for Caius.
He'd never heard the word Kraken before but when offered a description of the creature it conjured up a single clear picture in Sabin's mind and he knew he had to do something about it.
Besides, he thought, it wasn't beyond Ultros to swim around with a fake name.
Aboard the ship the wind and the water lashed at his face. He squinted to see against the stinging saltwater spray. The chill started to reach his bones. But as the ship rolled and swayed in the unforgiving seas, Sabin couldn't help but grin and laugh. It was an adrenaline laugh, a nervous energy in him that had no other outlet. He was at the mercy of the situation. What else could he do about it?
He made no move to shield himself from the rain and the sea, instead walking the deck of the ship with confident, if slow, strides. It wasn't that he had sea legs - Sabin was no sailor - but years of training meant the big man had the balance of a cat. As the deck shifted one way and then the other, Sabin matched it with his center of gravity. Good training, in and of itself. He passed by Caius and his dragon, but the man's eyes were closed so Sabin didn't bother him. Continuing on his loop around the deck he came upon the ninja he didn't know and what looked like some sort of spirit on the man's shoulder. Curious. Sabin offered a friendly nod, and then...
Then, over the roar of the sea and the crashing of the waves and the cacophony of thunder was the sound of violent seasickness.
"Hey!" Sabin called out to the... creature...? vomiting over the side of the ship. "Maybe I can help! Try to breathe slowly!"
Sabin carefully walked over and planted himself a few feet from the creature, trying to anchor himself in a low stance; it was easier said than done on the slick deckboards in these roiling seas. He held his hands up in front of him, pressing one fist against a flat palm, and he closed his eyes and focused his chi. A faint blue glow surrounded him, and extended outward from him, and enveloped the vomiting creature in its gentle light.
Then Sabin opened his eyes and stood up straight and the light vanished instantly. He knew from experience that this Mantra helped with injury and it helped with poison. He'd never tried it against seasickness before but it couldn't hurt, right?
Without any sign of Ace or the other members of Class Zero, she knew she was on her own—in more ways than one.
…at least she had the crutch of Caius and the Dragonblades to lean on.
What she was not expecting, however, was this—
To be thrown out onto a rickety wooden vessel (it certainly looked far below the kind of ships that cut through the skies of Orience, and then again there were no actual missions that took place beyond the continent) with nothing but an enchanted fire and pendants that claimed to guide the way…
Well, needless to say they were all screwed, in more ways than one. While she didn’t have any ‘sea legs’ either (she was much more used to flying on an air ship, why didn’t they take an air ship instead) she could barely hear anything else over the torrential rain.
Not even the cloak that she and Ace wore could keep out the pouring, torrential weather. It was… basically a mess. Oh, Vermillion Crystal, what were they to do? Were they just going to ‘sail’ around in eternity, lost to the roaring sound of waves that threatened to blow their ship apart?
The mantra works! Sort of. Quina feels a strange power grow inside him, something that almost makes the nausea worse. It only lasts a moment however before it feels like something that's been misaligned pops back into place. It didn't help the Qu's stomach, exactly, but it certainly cleared their head. Which means the vomiting ends! For now.
Above you, the eternal flame flickers in the half light. Your pendant glows a deeper amber. After what could have been hours or maybe days, you're close. A sailor has climbed the mast to tend to the spotlight -- your only solace in the dark and rain. ”Are you still on course?” he calls down. His words are almost stolen by the wind.
”Aye!” the captain answers. ”It should be any time now!”
It is then that spears erupt from the stormy sea.
The volley assaults the ship from all sides, raining down like arrows. The sailor on the mast cries out, barely dodging. As he falls, his ankle twists within the mask, and he’s left hanging upside down, crying for help over the drowning gale. One by one, the spears land, piercing through the deck in great wooden splinters. One sailor is gutted straight through the chest and then pinned, gargling his last breaths.
The storm masks the sound of cracking wood as a dozen shadowed figures climb up the side of the ship, using their tridents as a kind of pick-axe to steady themselves. As they rise over the deck’s edge, you see reptilian faces, long necks, sweeping tails, and impenetrable shells mounted on scaled backs.
”Sahagin!” The captain cries his warning to all who can hear him. ”The guardians of the fiend! We’ve been boarded!”
Quina weakly and repeatedly lifted and dropped his forehead against the rim of the ship, the light tapping upon his skull a desperate attempt to block out the BANGING in his ears! He could scarcely hear the SCREAM of the winds or the CRASHES of the ocean beating against the hull of the boat over his own throbbing skull, the poor Qu gagging and wheezing away from the others... fore they wished nothing to do with him. Nobody but one, it would seem, as Sabin would step forward as the hero of Quina's guts, casting some kind of spell upon him that first, PULLED at his organs as if to rip them out... before undoing the KNOTS they were in! Next, the bile and bilge filling up the Qu's skull would clear like clouds parting from a sky, the chef's mind OPENING up to the world around him... one that looked as if it were about to be torn apart by a cataclysm, but he was at least aware of it now! Quina, at first not noticing just how good he was feeling all of a sudden, would WRETCH one last time on reflex as the ship was ROCKED especially hard, nothing but air escaping his maw... an improvement over times before.
"BBWWWWWWWWWAAARGH- Hey... I not sick!" Quina realize, perking up instantly as he whirled around on the tips of his feet as if he didn't just lose 20 pounds to projectile vomiting! "It miracle! I fine! It like this place not death-trap!" He looked over at Sabin who seemed to be checking him over, asking if he was okay! He must've been the one who helped him! ...Shows what kinda guys the rest of the crew was, standing around like doofuses in the rain but still! reaching into his jacket, Quina would pull out a LARGE frog he had been keeping tucked away, a snack he planned for later... now better served in the belly of his savior! Without a word, the chef would TOSS it right at his face as any civilized Qu would, offering him the greatest munchie in Gaia for doing him such a service!
Walking right past Sabin, feeling his debt had been paid in full, Quina nearly SLIPPED half a dozen times upon the swaying, slippery deck, making his movement across seem akin to a frenzied ballet-dance, strides and spins of flailing arms and extreme leans forwards and backwards! It was as if Quina were performing for the benefit of his so-called "team-mates" fore he barely got back to the center of the ship before everything went crazy! Before Quina knew it, he was surrounded by fish-like turtle-people, their pronged tridents golden and fierce, pointed threateningly at the chef's belly and backside! They formed a ring around him, cutting off any reasonable escape, more clambering onto the ship from all directions to surround the crew similarly! Quina's starry eyes widened in surprise as a situation having already gone to pot went to... like... kettle... black calling.... or some analogy of that nature, perhaps even a twinge of intimidation flashing across his face...
*GRRROWWWWWL*
Without a word, Quina lowered his head, reaching over his shoulder and withdrawing a MASSIVE demonic fork that had been strapped to his back, its form gnarled and twisted as if made of hardened flesh, its points cruel and harsh as if forged in the fires of hell! A twisted gleam flashed across the creature's eyes as it LEAPT into the air... AND brought it's fork down UPON the chest of the closest Sagahin to him! It went down RAPIDLY as Quina dropped his full weight upon it, the fork piercing deep into it's armored chest! The others scrambled in shock, not expecting such a resistance, their heads turning to one another, a flash of fear coming across their inhuman features! Quina didn't drop his foe, rather held it CLOSE to his chest as life fled it's body, rather turning his face towards those that had surrounded him... and unleashed a BEAM of water DEEP from his throat! Aqua Breath CRASHED into the first Sagahin, sending it FLYING back into the others, a great dent pressing deep within its body, crushing it from the inside! "I HUNGRY!" Quina roared, ghastly forks and spoons manifesting around the Sagahin he held, spinning around it in an almost twisted, ritualistic Waltz...

The storm made perceiving any incoming threats difficult for Au Ra, but at the very least his senses served him well enough to dodge one of the multitude of spears. Thankfully the torture to his horns courtesy of the torture of that creature's stomach has ended. Those were sounds that no mortal should be subjected to. The shinobi unsheathed his kodachi as soon as he realized that something was amiss.
What followed the spears were those who hurled them in the first place. They were shelled, reptilian creatures: Sahagin as indicated by the sailor captain. He'd heard of the similarly named beast tribe located in La Noscea, but the two races differed quite significantly from each other. But just like the Sahagin of his world, they were not friendly. They already took the life of one of the sailors after all, but he wouldn't allow them to take anymore.
With urgency, the ninja charged his attack as the kodachi glowed a blue light. Slashing towards the direction of nearby Sahagin, the attack sends multiple energy waves towards their vicinity. Five of the Sahagin before him would be met with the aetherial slash, Tenka Goken.
After Keimusho dispatched of those Sahagin, Enma would look over at another ongoing fight that being the creature that was just spewing bile towards the ocean not too long ago. "Sheesh! I imagine eating that is gonna make that guy vomit another tonze in the ocean," the anima commits. "Not now Enma, we have more pressing matters at hand," the Au Ra responds. The ninja couldn't care less if that creature happened to be eating those Sahigan, so long as it helped lower their numbers. They couldn't forget that they still had a Kraken to deal with. This was only the first obstacle for them to handle.

The noises stopped. The storm may not have ceased, but the most terrifying part of the trip had passed. With its cries of "I not sick!" the beast was finally appeased. Caius let out a heavy sigh of relief as he nestled his head back against Vordun, keeping his eyes closed as he tried to relax just a little. This Kraken was going to be a formidable challenger, and he needed to be ready both physically and mentally. Now that things had been reduced to at least a slight calm... Perhaps he could finally-
"We've been boarded!"
Caius' eyes snapped open, and he finally just... Let out a long, resigned, annoyed sigh. Well, at least it couldn't get any-
"I'M HUNGRY!"
Ignoring that, Caius leaps to his feet, the shaded area of the ship protecting him and Vordun from the rain of arrows. Patting Vordun to indicate he can stay and conserve his energy for the battle ahead. At the least, Caius was in his zone when the zone became a battlefield. All his worries and anxieties faded behind a small smile as the mercenary summoned his sword. This was where he was at his most comfortable… Rain, sleet or snow. And no storm was going to deter him from that.
Though he frowned when he saw the sailors being cut down. That soured his mood quickly, as Caius quickened his feet and warped forward, surprising one of the trident-wielding lizards with a stab through the face. From the corner of his eye, he noticed the blue creature doing something to one of the monsters... Was it... Was it trying to eat it? Caius averted his eyes, trying to get the image out of his head as he quickly ducked a stab from a trident before countering with a dagger -- which appeared over his foot and had been kicked upwards -- straight into the chest of another monster.
