The Dragonglaive
Celes Chere Word Count: OOC: Dialogue Color: 196fd1
It had been a long trip through Sonora, and an even longer trip back due to having to send Vordun back after a rough fight, but he had finally made his way back to Torensten. As he knew that Celes had been... Touchy, with him prior to his going, he had only corresponded with her twice since leaving. One letter was sent to alert Celes that he had been forced to send Vordun home to let his injuries heal and not wanting to leave him outside in the cold as circumstances would force Caius to remain inside of the city limits for a good deal of the trip, asking her to check in on him from time to time and to ensure that he wasn't still seriously hurt beyond what recovery could do. Caius had spent several hours with Vordun afterwords and had used his own curative magic repeatedly, but at the end of the day, Celes was the better magic user. And he knew he could rely on her. Vordun was able to feed himself just fine, but when it came to his injuries, he knew Celes would come through. As noted in the letter, she would find Vordun at Caius' homestead outside of Torensten. Banged up, but not hurt too badly anymore after Caius had taken as much care of him as he had.
The second letter had been a notice that he would be leaving Sonora shortly, and that he would hopefully be able to return to Torensten within the next few days. He had wished her well, and added that there was something he wished to discuss with her of a personal nature if she had the time when he returned. Which was surely a mistake on his part. What he wanted to talk about was far from what she would be thinking it was, most likely.
The hot tropical climate of Torensten was a welcoming one after all that time spent in the cold of Sonora. Once he was back, he first made his way back to the homestead to check on Vordun, and then next heading into the city to check in on headquarters. Caius let out a long breath as he made his way into the building, looking about to see who was around.
And then the exhaustion hit like a tank.
His shoulders slumped and the next breath was a heavy one. But it didn't take long before he was thrust back into work again.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Caius had written her a letter.
Well, two to be more precise, but the first had been nothing but business. The dragon had been injured in a fight up in Sonora (what had he been doing there, she wondered) and would be headed back without him. A tinge of fear had gripped her, reading those words, but she’d shoved them down just as quickly. Caius had dealt just fine without his dragon in the past, and she was sure he could make it back safely with or without a set of wings. It wasn’t Caius she was worried for, really, but rather the dragon. And herself.
Vordun had never liked her much. Or maybe she was projecting. Because she’d certainly never liked him.
She’d gone to Caius’ house nearly every day after receiving that letter. At first, there’d been nothing there but dust and an open yard, and she’d sighed with relief. Then one day she’d been greeted with a reptilian snort and the sound of beating wings. She’d gone around the back to find him -- Vordun -- looking at her with gleaming eyes. He was injured just as Caius had said. The wounds had been crudely healed and would likely need to be reopened if she wanted all the muscles to align how they should. Celes sighed.
Surgery on a dragon. That was what she needed. But that dragon was important to Caius, and it had to be done. So she’d cast sleep on the poor thing and gotten to work.
The second letter had been less practical. Caius was returning home, it said, and she was only a little surprised. The journey back from Sonora was long and hard, but she’d known he would be coming back eventually. As it happened, she’d only just returned herself. She’d walked in to find that letter on her desk marked with a post stamp from three days prior.
”Oh,” she said as she read it. Below his plans was a small post script written in his crude chicken scratch. ’Something of a personal nature?’ Her stomach seized at that before her lips thinned and she set the letter aside. ”Well if that’s how you want it,” she said, but she couldn’t shut down her imagination. Had he noticed she’d been avoiding him? Of course he had -- she hadn’t been subtle. Did he want to talk about her or about…her? His feelings for her, rather. The things she’d heard him telling strangers on the side of the road.
Celes huffed. ”Maybe I have a few words for you too,” she said. The letter said nothing back. Paper, as it turned out, couldn’t talk.
In some other room, she heard Sabin getting settled. She’d told him to look over the place while she shuffled through whatever work she’d missed. Knowing him, he’d already fallen back onto the nearest couch he could find and put his feet up. And she did know him. Kind of. She’d never really understood someone so simple minded as Sabin.
Well, whatever he was doing, it looked like she had news. She pushed her bangs behind her ear and started after him. ”Sabin?”
He didn’t answer at first so she found the nearest room and peaked inside. ”Are you alright?” she asked as she went. Of course he likely was, but it was the best thing she could think of to start out with. The words had hardly left her mouth when she heard the main doors open behind her. Someone had decided to stop by the Dragonblades headquarters before she’d had a chance to so much as sit down -- let alone check in with her new found friend.

Caius had been surprised to see signs of surgery on Vordun when he checked on him. He had no idea that the wounds from the battle with the giant merged robot house were that bad. Sure, Vordun had gotten roughed up and Caius had mainly sent him Celes’ way as a just in case measure, but he hadn’t realized it was that bad. Celes had picked it up where he hadn’t and while he was grateful to her, he felt ashamed. He had missed that, and not only failed as Vordun’s owner but had put a burden on Celes.
He’d make it up to her. Perhaps he should stay in Torensten a little longer… While Caius wasn’t one to stay in one place too long, he’d been considering trying to alleviate things for Celes if he could. This might be a good time to start. He was getting better at dealing with the papers, in the few times he had relieved her. But Celes could still handle them faster. Dealing with paperwork and training the recruits was something she said she wanted to do, and Caius had all the respect in the world for her ability to pull it off -- but it didn’t mean she had to handle it alone. Now that the Dragonblades were growing, maybe he could afford to stick around longer than he usually did and help out on that front. Keep improving and take a bit of strain off his business partner. He doubted he’d ever do it as well as her, Celes was a natural leader and commander, and knew this stuff well, while Caius had grown up fighting on the front lines. But he'd damn well try.
When he heard her voice call out, Caius couldn’t help it as his expression visibly lightened and his eyes seemed to brighten in turn. For a moment, it was as if the past few weeks hadn’t happened and his fatigue was temporarily pushed aside. His posture straightened despite moments before seeming ready to fall over. He still felt like death, but he could manage to hold off on falling over for a bit longer. Adjusting his collar without realizing he was doing it, he slowly made his way towards the source.
"Sabin?" he inquired when Celes came into sight. "Is that a client, or a recruit? You've been busy" he remarked casually, managing a warm smile. When she turned, Caius formally placed a hand to his heart and bowed his head. "Celes, it's good to see you" he spoke softly. Not seeing anyone else around to address, and giving her a few moments longer to address this "Sabin" if she needed to (He didn't want to interrupt her business). When that was clear, his gaze trained on her as he took a deep breath, his emotions welling up just a little as he spoke the first thing on his mind. "I saw Vordun. Thank you, it means the world you did that" he almost whispered. "I'm sorry if I inconvenienced you."

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Sabin wasn’t there. Now that she really got a look at the room, that became obvious in seconds. He was a mountain of a man that one didn’t easily miss, and he wasn’t where she’d told him to be. She didn’t know why she was surprised. Sabin had a habit of wandering off, and staying indoors. He was probably under a tree somewhere, quiet and meditative. Maybe he’d get involved with helping someone. He was always so good-hearted that way.
”Sabin?”
Celes blinked, turned around, and there was Caius. ”Oh.” That was all that slipped out of her mouth as she looked at him, still startled. She’d hardly had time to read his letter before he was here. She’d really thought she’d have had more time to prepare herself, but she guessed not. It was enough to make her head spin.
”Oh,” she said again. Then she felt a familiar twisting in her stomach. She didn’t really know what to say to him. ”He’s a friend of mine,” she went on. ”From my world. He’s simple, but he means well. I thought he’d be a good member of the team.”
Yes, let’s talk about work. Only work. She could handle that while she tried to think of a way to deal with-
He bowed his head. ”Celes. It’s good to see you.” He meant it too from the bottom of his heart. Celes shifted.
”Right.” She was really a chatterbox today, wasn’t she? What kind of greeting was that? After he’d been gone for so long? Well, after they’d both been gone. Celes had a way of keeping herself busy when she had a lot to think about.
He took a deep breath. ”I saw Vordun. Thank you. It means the world you did that.” He quieted, his voice full of emotions too strong for more than a whisper. ”I’m sorry if I inconvenienced you.”
”What? Oh no. It was…” Celes trailed off, waiting a little too long to say, ”...Fine.”
She was silent for too long. Painfully long. God, what was she supposed to say?
”You must be tired,” she blurted out. ”You should go sit. Or rest. Or something.” It wasn’t eloquent, but she didn’t know what else she was supposed to do. Why was he talking like that? It was a perfectly fine thing to say, but the way he said it…
It was awkward. She was awkward. Why was he acting like this? She couldn’t think of a single reason to be so overcome by her healing a dragon. Whispering? It felt wrong.
”I’ve just been working. You know how it is.” Another pause. ”So. I guess we’re both here now.”

The Dragonglaive
Celes Chere Word Count: OOC: Dialogue Color: 196fd1
He'd startled her on accident. Whoops. He gave an apologetic look, but didn't speak on the subject, instead moving to business. "If you'll vouch for him, I suppose no need for a tryout. I trust you" he brought up, managing a smile. "I'll introduce myself next time he's around."
Perhaps he was a bit emotional over a dragon. But Caius had raised Vordun. Spent almost every day with Vordun. Vordun was the closest thing to Caius’ own child, and it was clear he cared about the drake dearly. The last thing Caius had expected was for Celes to have to go out of her way and perform surgery on a dragon, especially one that she was clearly nervous to be around. He wasn’t blind to that fact. But Caius didn’t — couldn’t have realized what needed to be done at the time, he’d just figured Vordun was banged up and if it turned out it was a bit more extensive than what his own healing magic could handle, Celes was far more powerful of a healing magic user than he was. Surely it would have been a cinch for her. But it hadn’t been. And she’d done it anyway, even if she’d clearly been upset at him and avoiding him, with no hesitation. And considering he’d likely only just found out recently that Vordun’s injury was that extensive, it was little shock his emotions were running a little high when it came to the subject.
He had inconvenienced her far more than he had meant to. He wasn’t happy about that, but he was deeply grateful all the same. She said it was fine, though Caius had begun to notice a pattern of awkwardness, short answers, hesitation. She'd been this way with him for the last while too, in the few times they'd spoken. Seemed he wasn't imagining that something was up.
”You should go sit. Or rest. Or something” she brought up. He nodded his head. "I will soon."
The adrenaline was keeping him going for now. But it wouldn't last forever.
”I’ve just been working. You know how it is” she said, and he smiled lightly. "I saw the Mog issue on my way back. You've been doing well" he brought up. She'd been getting out of the office more, it sounded like. He wondered again about if maybe covering for her at the office a bit more often might be best.
”So. I guess we’re both here now.”
"Yeah."
He scratched his head. Now he was awkward. Did she mean what he thought she meant? He didn't know, but the tension was killing him here. He supposed if possible, it was best to get this over with.
"I uh... If you have a free moment, I was uh... Hoping to sit down and talk. It's... Not a big deal if you're busy. It can wait. If you're free, um, I can grab something to drink if you want to sit down?"

”The Mog?” Celes blinked and then gave a short laugh. ”Oh that. If I’d have known they were going to write something, I’d have said something a little better.” It had been something of a surprise when she’d read her own words in the local paper. It was also a surprise that that paper was run by moogles, but she’d largely gotten over that by now. She didn’t really need to tell Caius any more than that. He’d made some newsworthy story more times than she could reasonably count.
Maybe that had something to do with their spike in membership. He really was better at this than she could ever hope to be.
The silence stretched long between them. ’So I guess we’re both here now.’’Yeah.’
She wanted to sink into the floorboards. She wanted to disappear and never be seen again. Caius scratched his head. Celes shifted. That endless moment stretched on until Caius said, ”I was uh...hoping to sit down and talk.”
”Oh.” Her stomach sank. There it was. ’I was hoping to sit down and talk.’ What kind of start was that? What could he possibly want to talk about? It felt like some kind of advanced form of torture. Celes could handle needles shooting into her arm. She could handle being chained to a wall, and she could handle punches to the gut while she was so indisposed. But this…?
What did he want to talk about? What? Her mind spun with answers and none of them were good. Just tell me!
And that was when she got mad. ”Oh. Okay. I understand.” She was being snippy -- cold in that way that showed that she really didn’t.”You’re right. We do have something to talk about.”
Did they really? Maybe, but it didn’t matter so much to her. If he was going to play that game then she’d turn it around right back at him. Let him simmer on that for a while. It felt better than the rising chill that twisted in the back of her throat.
”I’ll wait for you.” She marched over to the chairs in the currently vacant entrance room, grabbed one, and sat poised on the edge with her arms crossed. Even through her anger, her heart fluttered.
Don’t.
Worrying wouldn’t do anything. In fact, it would do less than nothing. Still, she couldn’t help it. Why did she care so much?
It didn’t matter. They were on the cusp of saying something, and that meant that it would all come out soon enough. Maybe she had more to say than she'd thought.

“I thought it was great” he answered casually with a light smile when Celes expressed she should have said something better. She'd represented them well, so he couldn't be happier about that. Caius was always big on the Dragonblades being represented well, as especially in Torensten, that could make or break them. King Hremit and the people of Torensten had always been big on honor. Making sure they conducted things and spoke honorably, while obviously the right thing to do, would also ensure they could continue their work. And continue to grow, at that. If this bombed, well... Caius didn't really have much else. It was as he had told a certain orange-haired young lady a long time ago - The Dragonblades gave him purpose.
Celes agreed to sit down and talk, but Caius saw it. I mean, it wasn't like she was being subtle. She had suddenly gone very, very cold. And he wasn't being subtle about the fact he'd seen it either. His eyes widened as he stared at her a moment, taken aback by it. Hurt welled up in his eyes throughout that moment, and he averted his eyes after the moment had passed. Had he really let this fester for so long that it had gotten this bad? He quietly cursed himself for letting it go this far. Or was this even the only reason she was upset? He just... Didn't know. All he could do was handle what he knew, and hopefully if there was something else, perhaps it would come out. If she was upset at him, he wanted to make it right if he could.
”You’re right. We do have something to talk about.”
What did she mean by that? That bugged him, but he knew he couldn't worry too much about it for now. As much as he did very much worry about it. It was an anxiety he couldn't keep away. He tried. He really did. But this was Celes. This was... This was the one person he cared about the most.
He quietly nodded his head and said no more. He let out an exhale to steady himself as he went to get their drinks. Before long he had returned with them, gingerly handing one to her before sitting down in the chair opposing hers. He stared at her a moment, trying to find the words. Trying to pull back everything he'd been reminding himself to say. He was... Not good at words. Nor at memorizing what to say. He'd played this back in his head a hundred times now, but now that he was here? It was like it had all just disappeared. God, did he really have to wing it? This could be bad, but...
In the end, he was just going to have to speak from his heart and hope for the best. As bad as that might end up being.
Another long exhale. A long drink to wet his lips and cull the dryness in his throat. Finally he looked to her proper as he cleared his throat.
"I uh..."
He was blowing it. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights, but eventually he managed to get ahold of himself, at least enough.
"I owe you an apology."
Here we go. He met her eyes.
"I... I wanted to bring this up sooner, but we both know that I'm not very good at, you know... Words" he admitted, managing a small, nervous laugh. No, no he was not. "I wanted to find the right words to say, not bungle this up, but... Yeah."
He took a breath. Okay. For real this time.
"I understand how much your worth as a warrior means to you. And yet on our last mission together, I... Well, I hesitated to send you down there. And I know you saw me do it, I saw the look you had. I know I shouldn't have. And since not long after you've been distant, and while I don't know if this is the reason, the least I can do is start to make it right. But... What happened on that day wasn't me thinking you couldn't do it. Quite the opposite actually. But I guess it just... Hit me. While I had no lack of confidence in your capabilities, fact was that whoever went down there was taking a huge risk. And.... I realized that I wouldn't know what to do if you died. I don't know if I could continue this mission of ours if you died, and... Well..."
He bit his lip. "I consider you my best friend. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you. For a moment, I told myself that I'd rather risk myself. I'd rather die myself than have to live in a world where you weren't there. Without you, all of this falls apart, and... In a way, so do I. On top of that... Their ire was directed at me. In my eyes at the time, the responsibility of taking care of that was mine to bear. If you died because of me, I could never forgive myself."
He took another breath, steadied himself once more. "But at the end of the day... I understood that you can take care of yourself. On top of that, if anyone was going to get it done... It was you. I... Would even go so far as to say that out of the two of us, you had a better chance of surviving that than I did."
He sighed. "But I still hesitated. I still disrespected you. And it's been bothering me since. And if I've upset you, if I've slighted you, I am so sorry. I should have told you straight up right away. I shouldn't have waited this long, nor should I have hesitated in the first place. Most of all..."
His expression hardened as he felt that determination to say what came next.
"From the bottom of my heart. I want you to know without a shadow of a doubt that I respect you and your capabilities to the highest degree. You possibly more than anyone else in this life. And I'm sorry if even for a second I made you think that I consider you any less than how I really do feel."
He let out an exhale, as if a world had been lifted off his shoulders from finally getting that out. He let out a small laugh at the thought that came next.
"Honestly, I admitted to Yuna recently that you are literally the last person I'd want to be on the opposite side of a battlefield to. You're terrifying when you fight" he admitted, that smile finally starting to come back. "That's a good thing, of course. I don't know how anyone up and decides to mess with you. I wouldn't."
Despite the smile though, he had started to read her expressions. He didn't know how she would react, how she would respond. Had he bungled it up? He didn't know. And that worried him.
The smile slowly faded in the silence that followed, and his hands tightened a bit in anticipation.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Caius was visibly uncomfortable when he returned, drinks in hand. He offered her one and she took it, quickly setting it on the table. The cold condensation of it felt good in the tropical heat, but she found that she wasn’t really in the mood to drink it. Not yet.
For a long time, they just sat there, looking at each other. Celes felt her skin crawl, but she was determined not to say the first word. He was the one to spring this on her after all. She’d let him set the tone.
”I uh…”
Celes looked at him expectantly. He was all wide eyed and struck like a cornered animal. It was almost enough to make her feel bad for him, but she really couldn’t. Not when her stomach was twisting the way it was.
You what?
Finally he composed himself. ”I owe you an apology.”
”Huh?”
”I...I wanted to bring this up sooner, but we both know that I’m not very good at...you know. Words.”
She could have laughed. Wasn’t that true? But he was trying, and it wasn’t like she’d expected this. No wonder he’d been so nervous. Sitting her down to apologize? All of the guilt she’d held back rushed into her all at once. This was hard for him. That was obvious, and she had to respect that. Still, a single thought lingered like an echo.
Why?
He was eager to explain.
Through all of his practiced words, Celes just stared at him. Her expression shifted from confusion to realization to slight annoyance. He had a whole speech prepared, didn’t he? It was a nice gesture, but the more he talked the more she wanted to stop him. It was all so unexpected that she felt as though she’d been turned onto her head.
Once he’d finished, Celes let him have a little silence just to make sure she wouldn’t interrupt him. Then she gave him a disbelieving look and asked, ”Is that what this was all about?”
She didn’t mean to sound cold. Not this time and not after he’d bared his soul to her, but she couldn’t have said anything different. She’d honestly forgotten all about their last mission together. It hadn’t even been on her mind, but apparently it had been all over his. She shook her head.
”I don’t care about that,” she said and then paused. ”Well. Maybe I cared a little.” Now that she thought about it, she really had been annoyed with him at the time, hadn’t she? ”You really should have let me go. I know you did, but you didn’t want me to. You’re always throwing yourself into danger. But when I try to do it, it’s suddenly a problem.”
How had she forgotten that feeling? How he'd made her feel small? Somehow lesser? Now it was all coming out, and the more she talked, the more it overtook her again. She’d never had a chance to tell him. Or maybe she hadn’t wanted to.
”You’re always like that, you know. You say that I’m capable and competent, but you’re always telling me to stay back or to keep out of danger. Maybe you think you respect me, but you don’t. Not when you act like that, anyway.”
She pushed back her hair. Where was this coming from? She felt like the words were springing up on their own.
”Do you want to know why I’m mad? Because you keep saying things exactly like this. ’I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you.’ ‘I’d rather die than live without you.’ What am I supposed to do with that? Oh good. Your entire life depends on me. Do you ever think about how that would make me feel?”
It was all rising to the top now. Heat and pressure and something that stung in her eyes. She wanted to yell. That would make her feel better, wouldn’t it? But she didn’t. Instead, she just clenched her nails into her pants and let herself speak before she thought better of it.
”We’re friends,” she said. ”That’s all, Caius. I used to think that you wanted something more, but that’s not it at all, is it? You keep telling people that I was your light in the dark. That I’m the only thing that’s keeping you going, and that’s not right. I’m not a light, I’m a person, and maybe I did pull you out of a dark place, but that doesn’t mean I’m the only thing keeping you there. Or I shouldn’t be.”
She took a breath. Her throat was too tight. ”I’m not perfect. I’m not the person you think I am. And I hate when you act like I’m someone I’m not.”

Well, practiced had been the intention. By the time he'd said it though, not a single thing he'd prepared had come out and he'd just winged it. He did say he wasn't good at that, after all.
His frown deepened when she spoke up. Cold, harsh. His expression moved between clearly being upset, at points guilty, others utterly confused as she completely lambasted him. He didn't know what to think. He knew there was a possibility she'd lose it at him, but while she wasn't exactly yelling, this was still the last thing he wanted. But he had said flat out that he wanted to start on making things right. At least now he knew what was wrong, or at least to an extent.
Caius waited for her to finish, letting a silence hang for a long moment. He'd bit his lip, and hard at that. For a little bit, he just stared at his drink, trying to process everything she'd said. But finally, he took a breath, settled himself down, and looked to her. "Do I really do that constantly?" he asked in almost a whisper. His tone was hurt. But not hurt by her. Hurt by the fact that he had made her feel this way, regardless of his intentions. "I know that there was that one time, and I gave my reasons there, but... If that's happened beyond that time, I don't remember. But..." he trailed off. Another exhale. "If I have, I apologize. I never intended to pull you back, or make you feel as though you weren't..."
Weren't what? God, finding words was hard.
"... Weren't, well, you. We're warriors, danger's part of it. This is our job. I remember hesitating once, but it sounds like I need to be more aware of what I say and do if I've done it past that."
Then it came to what he'd been saying. Why she was mad. This was... A slippery slope, to say the least and he wasn't entirely sure how to approach it. But he'd try.
"As far as what I've been saying goes, I... I guess you're right. I didn't consider how you would have felt" he spoke softly. He'd remained relatively calm on the surface despite everything, though his voice broke at points. Inside though, everything was on fire. "That was wrong of me. That's not a burden you should bear, and I shouldn't have said things like that. I'm not great at words, and trying to convey how I feel about things is... Difficult. But I've put a burden on you that I never meant to, and I apologize for that."
But it was her last words, much of it was... Well, he didn't really understand a good deal of it. He tapped his fingers on the glass a few times, trying to find the words. Another breath. The nerves seemed to escalate when he spoke next, but he steeled himself nonetheless.
"Forgive me, but... Some of what you've said doesn't make sense to me straight off, and maybe I'm missing something. But did I really say that you were the light in my dark and the only thing that keeps me going?" he inquired, blinking a few times in turn. "That doesn't sound like something I'd say, I guess? I might have said the Dragonblades give me purpose, perhaps. What we do here, the Dragonblades. They keep me going. I love doing this, I love getting up in the morning to go out there and work with the group, and going out and helping people. That's given me something to look forward to, a purpose to fight for, I'll wholly admit."
He tilted his head slightly, very much trying to recall if he had said those things. But nothing came. His voice settled a little, his tone deepened into something more serious. He met her eyes.
"You are invaluable to me. When I said that there is nobody I would rather have fighting by my side, I meant every word. And I don't think that's ever going to change. You probably stopped me from doing something stupid after that incident before, and I will forever be grateful for that. But I genuinely don't recall saying those things. As far as wanting something more... I don't understand what you mean. Maybe I'm not remembering right, but a lot of this isn't making any sense to me. Is there any chance you could elaborate a bit?"
He was a little annoyed at not having any real context to a fair bit of this. But what was important to him was that he had hurt her. He let out a sigh.
"Either way, I've made you think that I expect all of these high things of you, and absolute perfection, and... Well... Yeah. And I apologize for that. I never wanted to make you feel that way, and I still wish I hadn't. I wish you'd brought this up when you first started to feel like this, honestly. I would have listened and tried my best before to make it right. But while not all of it makes complete sense to me, what's clear is I need to re-evaluate what I say and do. That, I can do."

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
He didn’t know what she was talking about. Of course he didn’t. After she’d finally opened up, after she’d finally given him what he’d wanted, after she’d finally been honest with herself, it had all fallen flat. He meant well. He apologized for making her feel that way, but there wasn’t any real understanding there, and again she struggled not to yell at him.
Why did he always have to be so oblivious?
”That isn’t what I...You just said it, didn’t you?” Celes tried to keep the frustration out of her voice. She really did, but how could she? ”You just said that you’d die if I wasn’t around. You said that everything falls apart without me. That you fall apart or...whatever.” She felt heat rising to her cheeks. Had she somehow imagined all of that? He was cool. Confident. Like he hadn’t heard the same words she’d heard at all.
Was she the one being unreasonable?
”You do that all the time. Don’t you?”
Did he? She suddenly wasn’t so sure.
”It feels like...um…” Oh god, what had she been saying? It had all come out like something ready to burst inside of her and now...Was she thinking too hard again?
”I don’t know. I talk to people. They know you. All of them come in saying that they’ve heard I’m such a wonderful person who saved you and keeps your life together. They always have these looks. That’s how you talk about me, isn’t it? That’s what I hear.”
Yet now that she said it, she couldn’t think of a single example. Cissnei, Yuna, Vincent. She remembered how they’d talked, but she couldn’t remember the words exactly. Caius needed words. If she didn’t have them then how could she prove it had happened at all?
Celes looked down at her hands. ”Well how was I supposed to tell you any of this? I sound crazy, don’t I? ’Oh no how dare you say nice things about me!’ I don’t like sounding unreasonable, you know.”
But she was, wasn’t she? She really was. She always was.
”Nevermind. It doesn’t matter.” She stood. ”I’m tired. Thanks for the apology.”
