Yuna laughed at him again, and this time he decided to comment on it. "If I didn't know any better, I'd start to think you're laughing at my pain and suffering" He joked with a light chuckle as he got back onto Vordun. He was still curious about Vordun's level of sentience, wondering if perhaps he had underestimated the creature -- but that would be something to consider at some point later. He had shaken his head when Yuna asked about postponing. They would just have to grin and bear it for now, and accomodate for the lack of a proper saddle for the time being. They had set aside time to practice, and they were going to use it. Caius knew going in that this wouldn't be easy, and he wasn't going to give up just because there had been obstacles in his way. Obstacles like these would not stop Caius.
Yuna agreed that communication would be key, and Caius nodded his head, taking a deep breath to steady himself. Vordun seemed to sense that Caius was having some anxiety, as the dragon looked back at him and let out almost a whimpering sort of growl. Caius shook his head. "I'm fine, Vordun" He promised, taking a moment to pat his head. Once had his bearings, his expression changed as he steeled himself for what was to come.
"Vordun, let's go!" Caius called out to Vordun, and the dragon took that as a signal to take off. The dragon notably used a slower ascent this time, and Caius was given enough time to clutch onto the rope and steady himself as Vordun then completed his ascent and shot himself up full speed. Caius had no control over the dragon at the time, all he could really do was hold on for dear life. He tried to keep a listening ear out for Yuna, in hopes she could offer some advice about control...
At least he hadn't fallen off yet.

Yuna quickly tried for a somber expression as Caius joked that she was laughing at his pain and suffering. “No, no! I’m sorry.” She clasped her hands in front of her in a reconciliatory manner, though her lips were twitching into a smile anyway. Back on Besaid, she could have kept a stoic face through anything. It seemed like the more time that she spent on Zephon, the more she was changing, and she hadn’t yet decided if that was a good thing or not.
“I just like to see you two play off each other,” she tried to explain. “And I know you’ll get the hang of it eventually. I don’t think he’d let you get hurt too badly.” Hopefully at least. Vordun did seem to have his moods, though that wasn’t too surprising since he was a dragon. Still, he was a fairly domesticated dragon, and he’d been with Caius since birth, so she was positive that he’d at least make an effort to keep the blond glaive on his back.
After they had discussed communication as a strategy, Caius took a moment to steady himself with a strained breath. Yuna gave him a worried look as she stepped back to give them space. “If anything happens, I’m here,” she tried to comfort him, but Vordun beat her to the punch as he gave out a whimper and Caius patted his head. Her blond friend seemed to collect himself after that, and after a moment, the pair took off into the air.
The dragon was more considerate in his take-off this time, and while Caius looked far from comfortable, they made it into the air together. “You’re doing great!” She called up to them, but that was when Vordun shot forward at his usual speed. Caius looked like he was holding on for dear life, though he did manage to keep his seat, and Yuna winced as she ran forward to try to stay close to them. “Show him you want him to go slower!” She didn’t know if Caius could even hear her anymore, but she hoped that he could. “Squeeze your knees! Pull back on him!” She hesitated, remembering how Vordun had reacted to Caius’ words twice since she had been here—once angrily and once in worry. “Maybe just tell him!”
There wasn’t much more that she could do to help Caius while he was in mid-air, so instead she slowed to a stop, waiting in the tall grass for them. Either they’d land successfully, or she’d be there to heal him.
Caius couldn't even keep his eyes open. Vordun was much faster than any land creature he had ever used as a mount, and as they were rising upwards, the wind hit him that much harder. His hair was being blown back hard and it whipped him at times, usually in the eyes. This was far less majestic than he had imagined, to be honest. But he would get the hang of it, he hoped. Yuna yelled down to try and communicate to Vordun if Caius needed to slow down and while his pride made that difficult, Caius tapped on Vordun's side a few times. The dragon appeared to take the hint and slowed his ascent a bit. Caius' hair came down, and the messy-haired mercenary stared forward with lowered eyelids, blowing a strand of hair from his eyes.
God, he was going to be airsick if he didn't get used to going that fast anytime soon.
Vordun would stop ascending once he was high enough, and Caius couldn't help but look down and gulp a little. They were a lot higher than he had ever been in his life. Caius was no stranger to heights, but this? Okay, he was a little freaked out, he could admit. Convincing himself that Vordun would catch him if he fell, and that he had methods to slow his fall if necessary, Caius let out a deep exhale as he tried to calm down. The air was also a fair bit thinner here, he realized when he did, and he coughed and gagged a moment as he was unprepared for the lack of air collecting in his lungs compared to what he was used to.
This was going to take some work.
Caius moved up on the saddle a bit to be able to get to where Vordun could hear him. He shifted the rope so that instead of just using it to hold on, he could use it to nudge Vordun on direction. Moving the rope a bit and shifting his weight like he would with a chocobo, he was able to indicate to Vordun that he wanted to go right. Vordun seemed to understand, and darted right. Perhaps a bit too quickly, as Caius had to struggle to stay on but managed to hold on for dear life enough to keep himself aboard. Caius then asked Vordun to dart left, by speech to see how that went. Vordun darted left this time and this time, Caius made sure he had a firm grip this time. His preparation was worth it as he was better able to hold on and focus on what was ahead of them. Moving his chest downward, he used that shift to indicate for Vordun to go downwards. Vordun obliged, and would dart down, picking up speed again before Caius managed out a "slow down" to Vordun. "Let's land near Yuna" He instructed, and Vordun at least seemed to pick up on that. Vordun cruised through the air before coming to a stop on the ground near Yuna.
Caius unhooked himself and immediately tumbled off, hitting the ground and taking big gulps of air to try and catch his breath, and to try and stave off the wave of dizziness that hit him all at once then and there. He felt horribly, horribly airsick.

Yuna stared up at the sky nervously as the dragon kept ascending. They were so high up that she couldn’t really tell what they were doing from her place on the ground, but she did manage to see Caius pull the rope taught a second before Vordun darted to the right. Her heart leapt for his safety, but her friend managed to stay on and after a moment, the dragon sailed to the left instead. He didn’t usually fly so erratically, and a slight smile crossed her lips when she realized that Caius must have been guiding him to test the waters. He was doing so much better than his first try.
After a few minutes in the air, Vordun dove down towards her, and Yuna couldn’t resist taking a slight step back as the dragon landed close by, the air from his wings billowing back her skirt and her hair. As soon as they had landed properly, Caius untangled himself from the rope and rolled off of Vordun. He landed heavily on the ground, gulping in air, and Yuna grinned as she ran towards him and kneeled down next to him.
“That was amazing! You improved so quickly. You two looked so good up there,” she gushed, before realizing that his erratic breathing wasn’t normal. “Oh!” She wasn’t entirely sure what was wrong, and she didn’t want to force him to tell her while he could barely breathe, so she cast a Cure spell on him just to be safe.
“Are you okay?” She asked a little worriedly. “Do we need to call it a day?” She couldn’t really blame him either way. He had made great progress, and it probably wasn’t the safest way to practice on a saddle that they had thrown together. But at the same time, Vordun seemed to be getting the idea, and the ride would probably get smoother each time from here. Still, Yuna wasn’t the one going up in the air, so she would leave that up to Caius.
Caius was clearly worrying Yuna more than he had intended, and he felt bad for that. Even if he had been ready to go, her worry had made it clear that it was time to call it a day here and now. Caius managed to sit up. He wasn't hurt or anything, so the Cure wasn't needed even if he appreciated it. He was just short of breath from the lack of air with how high up they were, and from having a difficult time catching his breath during the initial ascent and then the descent. It was just something that Caius was going to have to get used to.
"I think I'm good, honestly" Caius spoke up. To be honest, with how stubborn he was, he would have probably gone right back up. But every trip up seemed to be more and more worrying for Yuna. And at the least, he had a general grasp of it now. There wasn't much to be done in front of Yuna except worry her further. Besides, he had already begun to identify the weaknesses of a saddle made like this and had started making plans for the real thing. It might be better to pick this up when they had a proper saddle. Caius had the basics down, and he didn't want to cause Yuna anymore anxiety, so he supposed he could practice on his own time when they had the saddle finished.
Getting up and dusting himself off, he reached over to pat Vordun on the head. "You did good today, pal. You get some rest" Caius praised the dragon, who let out a steam-filled snort before seeming to take the hint and moving to a rock nearby to curl up on. Caius then turned to Yuna with a gentle smile.
"Thank you for today" He spoke up softly. "Astrals know this would have been a far more astronomical disaster without you" He admitted with a laugh.

Yuna couldn’t blame Caius for calling it a day. He and Vordun had made a lot of progress on the second attempt, but Caius had still ended up a little worse for wear. She was glad that he appeared to be getting his breath back at least. It had scared her half to death when he had started gulping for air since she hadn’t really known what was wrong with him.
“Completely up to you. You definitely have the basics when you want to practice later.” Yuna stepped back to give him some room as Caius stood up to pat Vordun on the head. He instructed the dragon to go rest, and Yuna laughed softly as he lumbered over to curl up on a rock.
“You know, his teeth and claws are getting pretty scary. I’m glad he still acts like he used to around you,” she said with a smile, clasping her hands together and giving him a slight bow to acknowledge his thanks. “I’m happy to help. Anyway, I had fun. I’ve definitely never watched someone ride a dragon before.” She laughed and shook her head when he teased that it would have been a disaster without her. “No, no. I think you did great for a first try. It’s definitely not easy, and there were things we didn’t plan out in advance like the saddle…”
From nearby, Vordun’s breaths were rising in tiny steam puffs into the air where he had curled up on his rock. The blue coloring of his scales shimmered in the afternoon sunlight, and Yuna decided that she liked how peaceful it was out here. Torensten could still be seen in the distance, but they were far enough away to not hear much noise from the city outside of the wind.
“Why don’t we celebrate?” Yuna turned back to Caius to smile at him. “I’m not leaving Torensten quite yet. Want to grab some dinner?”
Despite much of this initial session being a disaster, they had done passably enough to practice on their own from here. With the basics in mind, they could call it for now. Though Caius knew that he would be out in the field by daybreak tomorrow already to practice further. He wasn't giving up until he mastered it. But that could wait until tomorrow. Yuna commented that Vordun was starting to look a little scary with his teeth and claws, but he could agree that he was happy that he hadn't changed one bit.
"He really hasn't changed" Caius admitted with a laugh. "And I'm happy with that. No matter how big he gets, he'll still be the little hatchling that rode in my coat, to me. Sure, he's gotten a little temperamental, but considering it hasn't really been all that long since he hatched, he really is still just a young dragon. So I suppose that's a given. He's big, but still quite young. I'm not even sure if this is as big as he gets. But for now, I can forgive some temperament issues, we can iron those out. It'll take time, but... Well, we've got time, don't we?"
That was just that. They had time. Unlike in the old world, they really did have all the time in the world he felt like. And that felt more liberating than anything else.
Yuna asked if he wanted to go out for dinner to celebrate, and he smiled as he nodded his head. "Of course" He spoke as he looked to Vordun. "I'll get extra and bring you some too" He promised the dragon, who had perked up at the mention of food. Caius kind of missed when Vordun was small enough to bring into restaurants and feed under the table. But he supposed that him getting too big to bit in buildings was inevitable.
Luckily Vordun seemed to take that rationality and lied back down, and Caius continued to wonder just how intelligent of a beast this drake was. He shrugged it off as he went to join Yuna.
