Fang watched as the brave Serah, who seemed to use the last of her strength in helping her sister, lost composure. Fang gave a frown and placed a hand on Serah’s shoulder in support. But Serah was already up and giving Light a hug in short-lived relief. Fang gave a soft shake of her mane and rubbed her neck as Serah transferred her love to Light. The two sisters had been through a lot. Fang began to make the move to remove the weapon’s bite from Light.
However, Fang listened to Mog and her heart sunk. Teeth gritted and fists balled harder on the pole of the spear. She would not let this thing win. It would not win. They were too close to returning Light to herself, but it was obvious that Light could not take anymore of a physical beating. She was barely holding on now, and using the last of her willpower to keep the thing inside her at bay.
And there was nothing Fang could do about it. “Tch.”
She met Light’s blue eyes with own green ones. The touch was too weak on her bicep and Fang trembled slightly at the thought. But her face hardened under Light’s gaze. No. Fang would not need to watch over Serah. Light can do it herself. Fang refused to believe this was the end. Light had survived much worse. She remember the ache in her jaw from the first time she watched over Serah…and messed up. Fang raised her other hand and placed it over Light’s, giving it a squeeze. Perhaps trying to transfer her own strength. ‘Don’t you dare let it win.’ She tried to silently get across.
She knelt down next to Serah and spoke softly to her. “Do you think your sister wants to see you cry?” Fang gave Serah a slight nudge and tilted her chin to point up at Light. Light didn’t want to see tears. There had been too much of that already. She watched silently as Noctis stood back up and removed the trident. A part of her felt angry he was bowing. She knew he was doing it in honor, but it felt like he had already perished the thought of her surviving.
But Light spoke again and Fang knew they were prolonging her suffering. This was not a kindness. She swallowed the lump in her throat and took a deep breath to swell her chest. She reached forward and gave Light a gentle, but firm hug. She placed Light’s head against her shoulder and leaned her cheek against the pinkette’s hair. “You can’t go yet. There’s still a bit of time before the stars show.” She hid her grimace for a second for what she was about to allow.
Fang was the protector. And she had failed to protect.
When she pulled away from Light, she gave the soldier a lopsided smile. She turned so that only Noctis would see her face. She gave him a hard glare; a look of permission and a silent plea to not let her suffer. She was trusting him with a single blow. An important action Light entrusted it to him.
She turned to Serah and knelt down in front of her to body block her. She wrapped her arms around her into a hug. She held Serah to her bosom like a mother would do to a daughter. “What did I say about tears, hm?” She spoke kindly again.

A young girl, no older than twelve ran through the facility. Anyone who could see her face could see how frantic she was. 'Food food... If I just find the right thing' again and again that was what she muttered to herself as she ran past the other residents. But no food she found gave her that feeling. No food told her things were going to be ok. Mother woudn"t wake up. Why woudn't she wake up? Did she do something bad? She was sorry! She could be better... She woudn't run in the halls at home!
Please just... Wake up
"N..no.. sis.... Lightining.. Claire... Please I... I still need you"
She didn't want to let go. She didn't want to say goodbye. As much as they both tried to comfort her.. she coudn't do it! She built all the determanation she could for this fight. She thought she could do whatever needed to he done.... But she was prepared to save her sister not end her! She tried to rub the tears away. Tried to abide her sister's last request and Fang's words so true. But she she coudn't stop this stream from coming out. She coudn't stop the hurt she felt. How was this fair?! How was this right?! She saved everyone. She saved the world. Her big sister... Please.
She didn't want to be alone.
She pushed back against Fang's hold in vain. She wasn't going anywhere. Their was no way out. Again. Again their was nothing she could do.
"You don't understand! We.... All we..!"
A girl, not much older than her plopped down by her side. Her older sister. She tried to hide it but she was just as distraught as her.
'Why... Why won't she wake up?'
'She just needs... A lot of rest'
It hurt so much. This feeling in her chest.. Even then she knew. She didn't understand but she knew their mom wasn't going to wake back up.
'It's ok Serah, It'll all be ok'
A comforting hand brought her to her sister's shoulder. Her shirt now absorbing the tears from her eyes.
'Claire... You won't ever have to sleep like that right..?'
A pause followed, her sister looked away in thought, then nodded her agreement.
'No Serah, from here on it's just the two of us... All we have..."
"All we have.... is each other"
The only family she had left. She didn't want to say goodbye again. She didn't want to be alone without her sister... Not again. She didn't want that parasite to control her ether but... Why was this the only option? Why. Why did she have to...
'Promise..?'
'Promise'
"Your strong enough, I know it"
No. Not for this. She could never be strong enough to say those words. To say goodbye to the last threads she had left. She didn't want to. She wanted her her big sister. She didn't want her to go see mother yet.
What did I say about tears, hm?
"I'm sorry..."
It was the last thing Lighting needed but it was all she could bring out. She did her best to dry her tears. Fang was right but.. she coudn't douse them completly. She offered a weak smile to her sister. She truly was glad she was in control of herself again. But this ending wasn't a happy one.
I can leave as myself, and I've you three to thank for that
So final, so wrong. She didn't deserve this. That monster inside her deserved it all! But to get it out...
"Say... Hello to mother for me..."
She didn't want to say goodbye. But she had to. She had to for her sister. The parasite would come back otherwise... Then she would only have to hurt her again. She paused, she tried to think of something... Anything she could say. How do you say goodbye to your sister? How do you say goodbye to the person who was always there? How could she? All she could she could manage to choke out was...
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Noctis stared at the canyon walls, eyes blankly gazing at nothing. Bells echoed in his mind, but not any bells that existed in this world. On certain days, bells would ring across Insomnia, echoing across the vast, endless cityscape as Noctis would go do class. Living with his father, he barely heard them, but, being out on his own for the time he had been, the bells would toll, and Noctis would hear them. They symbolized independence, but, deep within, Noctis knew they symbolized a freedom that he wouldn't ever have.
He coveted that freedom.
Being bound by fate, having to abide by some prewritten destiny. He closed his eyes, the bells tolling, the freedom he coveted always within grasp, but never truly. A snarl formed on his face as he felt a finger, his hand, then his arm go slightly numb. Eyes snapping open, Noctis looked down and saw the Ring of the Lucii on his hand, eyes widening. It was glowing, and the Power of the Kings was flowing through him. Not raging, like it was usually… Summoning the Armiger usually took strength and fury, but with this… it was calming. Almost as if to reassure him. He closed his fist, took a deep breath, and concentrated, the numbing in his arm fading as he felt the power flow into the ring.
He looked from the ring, straight ahead, the deadened, blank eyes now narrowed with determination. They had one more chance.
He turned, noticing that Serah and their other ally was huddled in an embrace, then looked to Lightning, who looked much worse as the time had passed. He didn't have a moment to lose. He walked silently over, and knelt beside her, being sure to put himself between Lightning and the others, blocking what he was going to do from sight. With this, there was one of two possibilities; The Parasite would die before her, and she could heal properly, or… it would be more painless. It was a burden he was willing to bear, and he had just the strength for it.
He locked eyes with the rose haired warrior, then held his ringless hand up in an offering. Camaraderie. Strength.
Trust.
Wordlessly, their exchange was instant, fleeting, but understood.
Do you trust me?
Her answer was only hers to give, through her eyes.
Through the grip of his hand, palm against the leather of her glove, he knew, so, the time to act was now. A grimace came across his face, both in determination of what he was going to attempt, and in a plea for forgiveness from whatever God resided in this land as one second passed.
Then another.
Then his ring touched the crystal on her chest, the abomination of shadow that plagued his friend, killed so many, and caused mayhem for who knows how long before he arrived. The air around them was still, but the ring glowed, and Noctis felt pain. Not his, or Lightning's, but the creature within, writhing against the Death spell, Noctis having to cast it on Lightning in order to kill the parasite. His eyes began to glow the violet neon, his powers flowing through him through the ring, into Lightning, then back to him.
He heard howls of fury, of pain, of desperation as whatever it was would more than likely try to claw it's way out, but Noctis already knew.
You're too weak, you bastard. Now… die, and fade away like the shadow you are.
He waited seconds, but they felt like years. He had to pull back at the right time. He gripped her hand, then closed his eyes, feeling, sensing, until he knew. The sensation rushed over him like a tidal wave, and he pulled the ring back ever so slightly, opening his eyes. He never let go of her hand, only moved to where he was on both of his knees, reaching up to clasp his other hand over hers.
He watched, silently waiting, dreading, but hoping.
Bearing the hope of all of them.

"You can’t go yet. There’s still a bit of time before the stars show." She hadn't remembered the woman walking over again, but the next time she opened her eyes and heard her voice, all she could see was a mane of wild, maroon-tipped hair and the edge of a blue sash draping over her shoulder. The stars. The stars? Why had the thought of missing them made her sad? The weight of her head rested a moment longer against the dragoon until she pulled away, helping to ease her weight back against the stone wall. Fang offered half of a sorrowful smile. Lightning traded back the other half.
"N..no.. sis... Lightining... Claire... Please I... I still need you."'You don't.' God, it hurt. Every word, every cry she swore would collapse her under its weight. The scuffle of boots coming closer had her eyes sliding to the side until the man - her outer-realm ally - came into view. His hand lifted between them and she pushed past the screams of her arm to lift her own and hold his with the firmest grip she could. "Say... Hello to mother for me..." Would she... even recognize her? Lightning's jaw tensed with a swallow that served as the only effort to hold back all but one tear that cascaded down her cheek. Her eyes remained certain and fixed onto Noctis'. Then- she saw something. A glint in his eye. A question. 'Do you trust me?' Wordless, but plain as day. The warrior's eyes opened wider, shaken, and all she could do was tighten her grip. Yes.
"I love you."
The ring pressed to the crystal above her heart.
Her face drained of color.
Blood roared and rushed within her ears,
A choir of voices shrieked -!
-nails on a chalkboard, metal on bone!
An explosion of light!
A swallow of darkness...
Silence.

Here she was again. The walls, the ground, the sky, all of it was black. This place was getting old. At least this time the population of two wouldn't catch her by surprise. Already she was scanning the area with bent knees and arms, readying herself for the inevitable attack. At first it was a distant, bouncing echo; shouts, yells, moans. It came closer, closer, louder, sharper. Lightning bared her teeth and flicked her sight frantically from one blank place to the next. The shouts became cries, the yells evolved to screams. It circled her as a twister, the sheer force of its volume rocking her balance like a gust of wind!
"We're bleeding, we're dying! Idiot! Fool! It'll kill you!" "That's the idea," she snapped lowly back, heart racing faster from the chaos' encroaching fury. The leech wasn't overjoyed at the response... A whip of rushing, whistling shadow struck her shoulder, nearly sending her to a knee, but her feet recovered. "Sightless mortal! I am your heart, your engine. Without me, there is no you. There is no victory! I will consume the last of you and evolve to feast upon the light of your friends!" Interesting new fact: parasites couldn't bluff worth a damn.
Another banshee-scream to try and instill terror flew behind her and finally she felt the distance click. Spinning on her heels, the soldier's hand shot out, fingers searching for a surface, and felt the monster's presence at last in her grip!
~*~*~*~
The crystal flickered, a spark of crimson trying to remain alight, but failed. The gem now lied dim, the gloved hand's grip releasing. As the foreign sun's light began to fall, so too did the final weight of the warrior's head upon her shoulders.
~*~*~*~
"No! Release! Mercy! Save us! Save you!" The hideous being appeared finally, black and formless of both face and body. An inky skeleton attempted to adjust and shift, slender poor-excuses for arms clawing at the hand that held them. Even still, the soldier was certain that of all of its gross oddities, she had it by the throat. "You bet your life?" Her eyes thinned, the just anger in her chest calming any sensation of pain, regret, sadness, fear. There was only light. "I bet mine!" Her hand crushed the shadowed form within it, shattering the blackened walls with an eruption of the creature's final cry. The blinding white returned, shoving the center of her chest and sending her flying away from the agent of chaos she'd battled.
~*~*~*~
A decent stretch of time had passed since the crystal's graying. The orange of the sun had all but faded, painting the stretch of the sky a vibrant, deep blue. The valley, void of life and naught but stone and ruin, gave no warning of the sudden screech that suddenly pierced the air and bounced along the stretch of its canyon walls. A small, spiderlike form of barely-solid black ooze crawled from the crystal's depths and spat out onto the ground; the parasite's last attempt at saving itself from the dying, poisonous, hostile host. It was but inches in length and height, crying like a tiny insect, struggling to move along the ground and already beginning to dissipate into charcoal smoke.
A minute passed. Two. Three. The air became cooler, the sky slowly darkening still. The lance kept the body in place; leather torn, skin paled, blood darkened and drying. But in the deepening darkness, what may have gone unseen in the sunlight, the smallest strobe of of white lit at the center of the sleeping crystal. Not for long, not in quick succession, but every so often... it would try its strobe again.
Fang felt Serah push and shove against her. Fang’s expression changed to one of understanding and pain. She kept her embrace strong, but not crushing. Some part of her sympathized with Serah. Fang herself had been ready to destroy what she had to - people that stood in her way or Fal’cie - if it meant saving Vanille’s life. Vanille was the only family she had. Serah, though Fang could not imagine her going on as violent a streak, would do whatever she had to if it meant saving her sister. But in this same situation, Lightning did not want her sister to go so far, just like how Vanille didn’t want Fang to destroy herself saving her.
Behind her, Fang could feel the tension building. She stiffened at what she knew was about to happen. She waited silently, finding a heart-wrenching comfort in the fact she was busy with Serah. It felt like a painful eternity, even for her. But she was suddenly startled by the screeching. She let go of Serah and turned to see the thing oozing across the ground. Fang felt anger well in her. If Light must die, then it must not be in vain. “Oh no. You’re not goin’ anywhere.” She stated her sandaled foot coming down on the thing and squashing it like the insect it was. Her foot made sure to twist and turn, until it became mashed deep in the rock and dirt.
She looked at in disgust before giving it no more thought. It did not deserve her attention any longer. There were more pressing matters at hand. She nodded to Serah, before moving and placing a hand on Noctis’s shoulder. Thank you was the wrong word. It was more of a appreciative acknowledgment and understanding of the task Noctis performed. The burden had been thrusted upon him, and it was not one easily carried.
She tore a long length of her blue garment from the lower portion. She gave Light a pained expression, seeing the crystal give soft pulsing glimmers. It’s possible she was fading or that she was holding on. It was hard to tell at this point. She grabbed on to her lance, and in one fluid motion she pulled it from rock and flesh. Letting it clatter to the ground, Fang moved to catch Light. She wrapped the cloth in her hand around her waist to cover the wound help stanch the flow of blood. Once satisfied, she knelt to adjust Light’s weight in her arms and picked her up to carry.
She turned to Serah, “Let’s go give your sister a better view, hm?” She gave Serah a sad smile. Fang could at least do this one last thing. She looked at Noctis and tilted her head to invite him to come as long. She proceeded to look up at the sky. So, close. The stars would come out next. Light at least deserved to be near them. Silently, she looked down at Light with a softened expression. She refused to let go. She refused to believe Light was fading. ‘You’re tough. You can do it.’ The thoughts came to her. Steady steps began to find a path up towards the sky amongst this rocky expanse.

"Thank.... Noctis.... I..."
She didn't know what to tell him. She wanted to thank him. For doing what she coudn't. For abiding her sister's wish when she coudn't bring herself to do so. But... it didn't seem right, thank you didn't feel right here. Her eyes never left her sister's, she intended to watch her till the very last second. To be woth her for ad long as she could. But their were so many things they hadn't been able to do. So much of this world she hadn't seen with her. In that moment she didn't care that they were stranded om someone unknown plain. She cared that she coudn't experince it with her. She coudn't live this nee life with her sister. She coudn't.... Coudn't... Because of...
"You....
The parasite finally lept from her sister's body. The way it so despretly tried to to escape, the way it seemed to beg for life. It might have been the first time Serah felt cold, one of the only times she truly hated something. The only time she felt this way. For this coward of a cresture that caused so much pain, so much hurt to her sister, to her? Their was only one fate for it.
Happy endings would not come to those like it.
Fang came to it first. She smashed it with her foot and left it be, she returned her friends nod but could not go back just yet. It was rare that rage welled itself deep in the youngest Farron sister. But this creature, now so broken... sparked it withen her.
"Your done now... This is the end"
From her satchel she drew a familar hunting knife. Mog was to tired, so she would do it herself. The life this thing was given was one it wasted. Controlling another, forcing her sister to its will. In the end that was it's biggest mistake. This was the result-everything it deserved. So many creatures and people she had seen. Yet this was only one she could say without hesitation didn't deserve the life it was given.
"You wasted it, you'll never EVER get another one!"
The knife came down hard on the broken creature. Once, twisted into the creature. The expression on the younger sister so forign, even wrong on her face. She could not feel for this thing. Any thought of it brought only anger to her being. Her face was cold, cold and expressionless as the creature finally became nothing.
For a moment she simply stood there, intent on watching it fade from this world for it's evil. That was until Fang's words roused her from her state of rage. Anger was replaced once more with the feeling of sadness as she put the knife away, despair in her heart. But also love. Fang was right. Her sister deserved the best. She was a hero, she always had been. For her even before they had become adults. Two heros were etched in her heart. The man she loved...
And her sister so dear.
"Yes, let's... The best"
A light smile crossed her face, the best she could manage right now. Fang carried her sister and Serah followed right at her side, her hand intertwined with her sisters as they made their way to the end. So final... So wrong...
A pulse
Faint, weak but there. She had to see it twice before she knew she wasn't making herself see it. It took no more than that for her to begin pooling whatever she had left into Lightining as they walked. Healing light went from her palm to her sister's, all she could do and still walk. A sister's last hope, her last hope.
"Come home sis.. I know you can, defying fate is what we do right?"
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Everyone's reaction was lost in the momentary fatigue that Noctis felt from using the ring. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and turned his head slightly to acknowledge, before standing and looking down at the rose haired warrior. He watched as the creature burst forth in an attempt to escape, but Fang and Serah had finished it off, while Noctis pondered for a moment. How did he know the other warrior's name? He shrugged it off, chalking it up to a side effect of using the ring on Lightning, and watched as Fang picked Lightning up to carry her off, presumably to a better place to pass on. He watched, fully intending to turn and walk away, but his eyes widened slightly at what he saw.
Fang looked at him and tilted her head in an invitation, an invitation to join her, Serah, and Lightning, to potential share in her last. As much as he despised constantly being in the company of death, it wasn't by obligation, or by any means to his displeasure to take that first step forward. It was respect, first and foremost, but it was also something he hadn't acknowledged since he had arrived at this forsaken world. Maybe seeing it through would allow him closure he couldn't get through any other means, but it was the fact that he knew, as the man who helped her cross the bridge back into the light, even for a short moment, she would want him there.
As the two walked away from him, he let out a shaky breath, remembering how the weight of the world felt, but this time, taking his father's words to heart. Walk tall. He had walked tall, and now, he will continue to.
"Come home sis.. I know you can, defying fate is what we do right?"
He looked up with mild surprise. Defying fate? Maybe her light was stronger than he thought? He continued to follow, his attention affixed on the trio, hope welling up inside like a plugged up wellspring. No, no hope yet, he knew what happened when he felt hope… no, this was her fate, and she was in control. All he did was show her the door.
He hoped that she had the strength to open it.

Fang crossed the stony terrain, feeling the colder bite of the wind the higher she followed the path. But nothing felt colder than the warmth noticeably leaving the warrior in her arms. She only looked to the path ahead, slowing her step only so that Serah could continue her contact with Lightning. Eventually the winding path led to a more appropriate setting.
Widening before them was a field of beautiful cottongrass and purple mountain saxifrage. It gave the terrain a soft ethereal feel with its puffs of white and dabbles of mauve. The view gave the perfect view of the sunset overlooking the mountain side. The plumes of mist that floated along the rocky crags took on the sun’s golden hue. The clear sky itself was darkening into a navy at this point with the silvery moon rising.
Fang looked to Serah, hoping there was a moment of agreement that this was the best place. After a moment of silence, Fang took Noctis into her vision as well, “We should set up camp here. Tonight, will be cold.” Fang walked forward and carefully knelt on her knees. She slowly laid Lightning out along the ground and gave the sleeping beauty a look over. Once Fang was satisfied about Lights comfort, she took a seated position at Light’s head. Allowing her lap to be a pillow to prop up Light’s head, she hoped it would be enough of an angle for Light to maybe see the sunset and the coming of the first stars.
Moving Light’s hair to the side and out of the way. Fang did not know if Lightning could hear her, but she spoke gently. “Now don’t you worry about us. You’ve done enough. It’s time for you to find your peace.” Part of her was starting to relinquish her stubbornness. Light had endured so much over the centuries. When was her time to find rest? Fang could not ask Lightning to keep giving. She simply wanted Lightning to have a shot at living her own life. Lightning fought so hard for everyone to have that. It was only fair she received that chance as well.

Her body might as well have been on auto pilot. She was numb to everything but the people walking beside her, the sister she didn't want to let go and the sky that served as their backdrop. Dad... Mom... Sister... Who would be left? Her? No... No she coudn't go! She wasn't ready. She thought she had steeled her heart, that she could be strong like Lightining, if it was for her. But... She coudn't. Not this far... She didn't want to say good bye again! Her grip tightned in response to her feelings. She could feel that small spark in her. That meant she was still in there. She wasn't gone yet.
Your the strongest person I know... Lightining, one more time, just one more miracle...
So many things coudn't be done without her. so many things woudn't be the same. How could she face mom's grave? How could she face Snow, knowing she failed their budding family? Snow.... How could their wedding happen without Lightining? Ever since Snow proposed to her their was only one person she could picture giving her away. She coudn't imagine it any other way. She coudn't imagine a life where her big sister was gone.
The world still needs you... I still need you
Fang's words stirred her, and she nodded her approval to her choice of resting area. It wss beutiful... Perfect for Light.. as Fang sat herself down with Lighting Serah did the same sitting beside her. Her grip on her sister's never faultering. She woudn't let go, no matter what.
One of the few things she was selfish about, someone she didn't want to let go. Wrong but right. Lightining more than anyone deserved peace, to be able finally sleep. After everything she had done, all the souls she saved. But she coudn't bring herself to accept it. She coudn't bring herself to accept losing the last family she had, the closest family she had. This wasn't like before. This wasn't a distortion by the Goddess. This was for real.
"Sister...."
Sister's hand held tight she looked over her, then to the stars above them both. Lightining... It happened again. She was ripped from everyone and forced to serve some twisted purpose. This time by some gross disgusting creature. If she ever found who did this... Who put this thing in her....
They WOULD pay
Lightining deserved to have a normal life. She deserved to just stay at home and enjoy herself. She had saved enough, protected enough. She would find Snow, he was a hero after all-he could make sure everything stayed safe wherever they were. He could do anything after all. But Lightining... Peace. That was what she deserved for so long... She wanted her to have it.
"Like before... Just you... Me... Snow... Even Fang!"
She offered a gentle smile to her friend, as well as one to Noctis. Of course she would have offered him the same but... She didn't want to force anything upon him. He was a dear friend, even more so after everything he had done. He would always be welcome in her eyes.
"We can find a nice place... A peaceful place... No worries... We can be happy, together, sis... Just rest, I love you"
Come home, be safe, and be at peace. Thats all she wanted.
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Darkness exists in many forms, many shapes. Either as an immutable truth, or in the eyes of a vile person, it always has the same end goal; Death. Death in some fashion. Death of a feeling, death of a beloved, or even death of an entire world. Noctis and Ignis, though rarely, would have conversations over dinners and desserts that Iggy would prepare for him during his time on his own. 6pm sharp, his retainer would show up, and start cooking, usually without a word, sometimes taking another stab at that pastry. Sometimes their brief talks would be over politics, sometimes, over Noctis' day to day life.
The one discussion over evil and it's many forms, however, stuck out to Noctis like a thorn in the middle of a seat cushion, because Noctis had seen these three forms of evil on this day, being projected through a powerful warrior. He also saw that evil die… if it was even truly dead. The origins of such a being bathed in the mystery surrounding it's power, and ability to control such a strong willed person. He didn't regard these thoughts with anger, or grit teeth. He felt somber. The weight of the ring on his hand no longer heavy due to some pre-written destiny to be followed, but instead, he played the part of his father… for someone else.
