The dragoon had leapt to defend the young girl, a shell of protective magic encasing the both of them and absorbing the majority of the electricity. The parasite took off into the air to follow the spearwielder with a vengeance, instinctively reaching back to the blade on her back to strike- no. It was gone, fool! Before she could adjust herself, the length of the spear's rod cut through the air and she was forced to cross her arms and take the brunt of it, sending her back down into the ground with a cloud of dust expelling from the earth at the impact.
There was hardly any time before she felt the sting of an arrowhead graze against the edge of her ear. An angered, otherworldly hiss came darkly from the host, a flash of rose-colored light sending her only a few feet away at a time to dodge what she could. Anything further and she risked wasting what little energy she had. Unfortunately, the fire just covered too wide of an area... and she was forced to expel even more of an effort to keep it from harming her too heavily. A palm opened before the fire and shot what icy dust it could, extinguishing the fire into burning steam while some of the flames still managed their ways around the weak blizzard spell and licked at her thick, leather armor. It singed in places, melted in others and singed the skin beneath.

The next rain of arrows was more calculated - causing her to focus entirely on defense in her phasing while listening to the idiotic, childish cries of the small archer. If she kept it up, maybe she could find an opening soon to get closer and strike the cursed, whining girl down. There! Finally, a window! Her foot planted down onto the ground and she meant to lunge forward, but instead a fist collided against her jaw. It was sore, but... mostly annoying and surprising. She hadn't exactly been expecting something so brute-forced and basic. Shame on her for not having caught it. Although, it had a silver lining. Here the light warrior was, kneeling not but a yard away, drained and spent. A perfect shield and a perfect opportunity to take something down with her.
In the split second their gazes met, a smirk raised on the side of the host's now-slightly-bleeding lips before the flash of rose light sent her to him, a knee striking through the air at the side of his face. Hardly letting the reaction settle, she grabbed at his collar and pulled him up just enough to get a good aim at his throat. The hand left for the briefest moment only to return around the man's neck beneath his chin instead, pinning him to the ground. The host's teeth clenched, veins of writhing darkness tensed beneath pale life-lacking skin along her jawline. A groaning, angry ball of Ruin'd magic built in her opposite hand as it rose in the air. If ending him was to be the final thing she could do, then end him she would, and the last he'd see would be the crimson-tainted eyes of Chaos swallowing his light whole!
Fang gave Serah a wink back in response to her nod. Lightning has helped a lot of people. It was indeed their turn to repay the favor. However, as she delivered the blow to Lightning, she realized that Serah and Noctis had something in common. Both their eyes seemed to be less focused on the present and more a vacant stare on the past. This could be dangerous in the fight. “Remembering the past is good and all, but how about we save the daydreaming for after, hm?”
Fang felt Lightning sink into the ground beneath the brunt of her attack. Fang did not stay in one place. She bound to the side as, Serah’s arrows narrowly whizzing past her to graze Light who suddenly began to dodge with inhuman agility away. For a horrifying moment, Fang thought Serah would be mauled, but Noctis put an end to the advance and Fang woke up out of her reverie to rush forward again. The threat had moved from Serah to Noctis. Fang summoned up her non-elemental energy to fling a spray at Lightning. The dark balls of energy speeding through the air to fight fire with fire.
In a blink of an eye, Fang was no longer on the ground. Her form seemingly there one moment only to be high in the air the next. Her back arced as the spear poised itself downward, much like that of a viper striking its victim. Fang felt a pang of regret as she aimed her spear to strike through Lightning’s back, and hopefully pin her. If she could not stop the blow to Noctis, she could at least lessen the damage to him. “Ya know…Tunnel vision is not your ally.” Fang taunted the creature, trying to once more divert its attention.
The Ruin that Fang had sent her way scattered and stung against her back, but she was intent on keeping her target below her the center of her attention. Her hand rose to strike the man all the same. "Ya know…Tunnel vision is not your ally." That was- above her? With an angered growl, she forced her eyes to rip away from Noctis and instead turn to face the threat above quick enough to react how little she was able. She'd meant to stand and roll away, but the dragoon's jump had been too swift. The force of the spear pierced through her side and she brought her leg up to do her best at kicking the woman away, causing her own balance to stumble back against a rocky wall. The lance remained embedded, the tip hitting the stone behind her before the rest of her did, and already she was reaching to try and pull it out.

Noctis was in trouble. Noctis was a friend, an ally of her sister's. He was helping them both. Whatever power he had left him in a defensless state however, and the parasite was going to use her sister's body to take advantage of it. Or she would have if not for Fang's interference. Serah relaxed a little knowing that at least in that moment Noct woudn't be mauled. But he was far from safe. Right now they were all to close risk using her bow... She didn't want to hit Fang while she was pinning her sister down in that spot. A signal to Mog saw Starseeker shift to it's bladed form. She wasn't anywhere near Fang or Light's ability in melee but.... She had an idea.
Her gaze turned to the lance in her sister's side, to the rock just behind her. Every strike agaisnt her sister hurt. It pained her. But she knew that it is what Lighting would want. She knew that as much as it pained her and her sister she was doing the right thing. The only chance to use it was now, as the corrupted being sought to remove and possibly take advantage of the weapon. But she woudn't allow that! Starseeker held firm in one hand she ran foward, trying to take advantage of the focus the creature must have elsewhere. It hurt, the thought of harming her sister like this brought stray tears even as she ran. Her body shook from more than her pace. She considered changing course, considered missing her shot and holding Light in place for everyone instead. She was better at the sacrifice right? Maybe it would awaken her sister and...
Serah!
"I'm sorry!"
Sorry for hestiating in her conviction. Sorry for every blow upon her sister. Sorry for everytime her sister had to sacrfice for her. This time she needed to swallow that. Swallow the pain like Lighting did. She took a deep breath as her hand gripped the lance just ahead of the bug and pushed hard, right into the stone to pin her down. She remained firm as she adjusted her form. Snow had his fist... A strong hand to knock the sense into people. Her hands wearn't strong like that. She coudn't bring herself yet to try and pierce Light with her blade.... The pain was to much. So instead...
Her leg cocked back and she struck out with a kick right across her sister's face!
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Everything was swimming, the energy it took to manifest even a single weapon tugging at his very memories, at his very being. Noctis didn't realize just how woefully underprepared he was to fight against someone with Lightning's caliber, and even now, with her weakened state, she could probably get the upper hand. Thankfully, the other two sprung into action, the one on his right pinning Lightning down, and Serah landing an impressive kick to the other rose haired warrior's face, making Noctis wince slightly at the impact. He held his hand up when he saw that she had been reaching for the lance, and closed his eyes, calling out mentally for someone, anyone, to give him the strength to fight…
A weapon materialized in a bright flash of white light as Noctis, without thinking, lunged forward in a warp, catching Lightning's arm with the weapon and pinning her to the stone beneath her, realizing after the prongs impacted with the rock that it was the Trident. Her Trident. The memory of him holding the weapon after she bequeathed it to him swam through his mind, then raged like a stormy sea as Noctis let out a roar, pushing the Trident further into the rock, embedding the weapon so deeply that the arch between the prongs held her arm there tightly.
It was done.
Noctis took a step back before wiping his brow off with his arm, looking down at the form before him. Her fight had almost given out, her strength ebbing, and Noctis knew that they had won, but… did they? His objective was to save Lightning, yet, here they were… killing her. After losing so many friends and family before, Noctis looked down upon her with a sense of foreboding in the back of his mind, and a weight on his heart. Was this his limit? Was he incapable of saving anyone else from unnecessary sacrifices? A grim expression had fallen on his face as he raised his hand up to grasp the arm he used to thrust the Trident at her.
His arm still buzzed with the numbness of the weapon hitting the rock, a familiar feeling that he had once thought he was done with.
"We did it." he said, looking between the two. "But, it was mostly you." he said with a sad smile, standing up straight and looking down to the fallen heroine.
"... So… What now?" he questioned.

There wasn't much left that the parasite could make the body physically do. Her attempt at freeing herself of hindered movement from the lance had failed the moment the host's annoying kin had found strength enough to beat upon the body she once 'loved'. It should have been a weakness, how had she pushed past it? The staff slid, pushing the warrior with it until her back met the stone inches behind. But the lance kept going. The blade dug into the rock and buried deep, pinning her tightly and earning an angry, pained roar that was short-lived when the boot whipping across the side of her face put an end to it. Her head wobbled loosely for a moment, finally lifting.
The bug coughed once to clear her throat of the disgusting human blood that crept up it. The red showed in the creases of her teeth as she bared them at the younger pink-haired girl. A hand rose for barely even a split second before a flash of white light shot and mended her forearm to the rock as well; prongs of a holy metal rendering any remaining strength she had useless. It burned! It sapped her energy, dulling it, numbing it, and all she could bare to do was lift her other hand weakly to the lance in her abdomen. There was no solid grip or danger of her releasing it. It simply rested there.
Then, eventually, the weight of her head fell forward.
Her chest remained as evidence of life, expanding with the occasional, tired breath. But for now, there was stillness. Silence. At least on the outside...

The black tendrils on the floor that kept her in place from reaching the pinhole of light in the distance weakened, their attention lapsing momentarily to something else. By the time they tried to shoot back out to grab her, she'd already broken out of them and started her stride to the source of the brightness.
"Get back here!" a multitude of voices echoed furiously behind her, some screeching, others moaning, a few-... crying. The soldier stopped, looking back to the endless abyss, but saw nothing. "You're dead, I killed you! I took it, it's mine now! You can't have it!" She most certainly didn't feel dead. She felt tired... But the fact that whatever ordered her specifically threatened her not to continue on had only made it that much more of a prevalent challenge.
With fueled determination, her eyes shifted again to the light and her pace quickened. Closer, closer, she could hear her own boots against more solid ground-! "No! GET BACK!" Closer, it was so bright she lifted an arm to shield her vision! Her other hand reached out, ripping past the barrier into the white.

After a stretch of nothingness, a few fingers on the hand that hung loosely beyond the trident's forks twitched. More nothing. A short while after, the expanse of her lungs began to just barely quicken in pace with less wait in-between. The heavy head bobbed, then again, struggling to right itself, but upon the third try lifted for long enough to open its eyes. The violent crimson that circled them fluxed, fading in and out, and the veins began to recede and die off like poisoned weeds. The lightest hint of color returned beneath her cheeks. Her vision hurt. Everything was so bright. The woman thinned her eyes, giving the briefest of looks to the two in front of her, then to the tanner figure behind them.
An expression of confusion washed over her face before a signal to her brain - clear thoughts or not - recognized them as 'friends'. It took a moment to sink in. In odd contrast to the current atmosphere, a weak and wry smirk lifted the side of her lips before she let her head rest back down. "Heh... lot brighter out here..." For a time she seemed content to rest there. A short while later, her head lifted of its own volition, jaw locked tensely, eyes winced shut, and veins attempting to crawl their way back up. The back of her skull rested against the stone behind her and the darkness once again weakened enough to die away. The further it got, the more relaxed she became until eventually her teal eyes opened again with a bit more awareness than the last - still tired, still weak. Still fighting for ownership. The smirk had died and the realization of her situation in her gaze was a sign that it most likely wouldn't return.
Lightning took stock of the allies before her: a young man she recalled fighting a distant war alongside, a dragoon that'd shared a like-mind of sisterhood and had chipped away the stone of her heart with nothing but a sharp-tongued attitude - equal parts annoyance and gratitude filling her memory, and then... a mirror of herself. No, younger. Kinder. Blurred memories of nursing scraped knees and elbows, laughing while covered in messes of a kitchen, and comforting with embraces at night in a bed that belonged to two larger and taller than either of them came to the front of her mind. Then the purge... the crystal pillar, the throne of Etro, the sea of time- so much. It was too abstract to focus on, too difficult to think clearly on it. It didn't matter. What mattered was she knew them. Her friends, her allies, her family. Slowly, her eyelids gave a sleepy blink. "...Thanks."
Fang felt as every inch of steel pierced deep into Light’s flesh, and then through it into a grinding halt. Fang could not even feel the jolt of the stone in her arms as her heart ached for what she did to who she considered a friend. Or was it after all of these centuries it was something more? Family? Regardless, this felt against every fiber in her being to protect those that were close to her. The blood was already staining Light’s clothing and the stone behind her. The blade warmed with the blood. Fang felt like she was starting to pull the lance back.
Serah’s actions woke her from her regrets. Where Fang was pulling back, Serah pushed forward. Lightning’s kin embed the lance deeper and further subdued her sister. The younger pinkette was displaying more strength than the Gran Pulse native. She seemed more certain that this was the right thing to do to bring back Light. Noctis found his inner strength too and Fang heard his warcry from the side to pin down Light’s arm that was reaching out deal with the threat. Both of them seemed to be moving forward with a plan without her.
She did not answer Noctis. She did not know what to do next. She had hoped beating her to her senses would work. The dying bit was not part of the plan, but how else could they subdue the thing inside her. She gave a growl at it, driving the lance just a little deeper. “Come on, Light.” She grunted. Or maybe she pleaded. Green eyes searched the face for any sign. And they received it. The marks of the parasite seemed to calm then recede. Then…there she was. It was Light finally. Tired, injured, slowly fading.
“Now, don’t you go thanking us for using you as a pin cushion.” It was an attempt to jest dismissively at her gratitude. “We’re gonna patch you up.” Fang’s voice tried to sound firm, but wavered. Believing that it was over, she postured to remove the lance from Lightning. “This may hurt a bit.”

It was her. Claire, Lighting, Light. Her sister-the only family she had left. The tone left no doubt in her mind. Their was no faking Lightining. Her legs buckled and she fell to her knees right there in front of her. As strong as she had tried to be during the tears now threatned to break free from her eyes freely. She coudn't find the words to say. How could she? The feeling in her heart wasn't one she could describe. She was back. Her older sister. The last constant in her life. The one she knew always looked over her.
"Sis...."
Memories ran rampit through her mind. Everything they had been through. Lightining picking her up after their parents died raising her.. teaching her... She tought her to cook, to study. She held a child close through storms and the worst of nightmares.
Lightining... Her sister.
She was here! She was back, they did it! Joy ran through her and on instinct she wrapped her arms around her gently, careful to avoid the weapons lodged into her She had to feel it again, the love of her sister. So long... She thought she would lose it forever. She only did so a moment before letting go. She was sure she wasn't in the best of conditions right now.
"I'm... I'm not dreaming right, your really here? Your really you..."
Hearing Fang brought her out of her daze, the young woman clasping her hands together and nodding firmly in agreement. Light had taken a lot of damage during this after all. She would need a lot of care and rest, even if she didn't want to. 'Meanie Miss Farron' would just have to make sure she did!
"Thats right! We'll just get these things out and heal you right...."
"Wait Kupo"
She heard the pained voice of Mog behind her, having transformed back to his natural state. serah turned her head back in confusion. What was wrong? They did it! They freed Lighting from that horrible thing. They did! They....
"It's still in her Kupo. It... Seems like the only way to free her, to get rid of the bug kupo is to...."
"No!"
Her voice laced with pain. Her heart all but shattered at the moogles words. No she was awake... It was fine now. They could stop here and just find another way.
"No thats... Wrong it has to be!"
Tears now came freely with hands trembling on the ground beneath. She had returned to a position on her knees, and looked back up to her sister. Looking for something, anything to tell her they didnt have to do it. That their was another way out of this. Her eyes, her face, her mouth. Something. A smile, a wink, words to make it right!
Something, anything to tell her the knife trembling in her pocket was just taking up space.
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me
❞
Noctis stood, staring. Death's door; It was a sight he was all too familiar with. The creature within her was barely hanging on… and so was she. Everything had culminated to a choice, now, a choice that was to be had by kin, by friend, and by ally. The impact, though present, was not as great as it had been to Serah, who was on her knees, and by the other friend, Fang, who had put up a facade of toughness to cover her own despair over the situation. No, it was obvious what needed to be done.
This was likely to be her grave, and her epitaph being a clash and flurry of blades and magic in a forgotten world, in the valley of a dead mountain. Scars from their battle lay around them as Noctis' eyes trailed along the grooves made by blade and spell alike. He let out a quiet sigh before turning back to Lightning, looking into her eyes, then looking down. This wasn't a rescue mission, it was an assassination. He looked back to Lightning, then, ignoring the aches of his body, knelt down beside Serah, placing his hand on her shoulder and gripping it gently.
No words; A moment like this deserved more than just words, more than a simple gesture. Fang and Serah both did not deserve the pain they were feeling, and Lightning did not deserve the sacrifice she had made to stop this darkness from destroying more lives.
Noctis understood. That is why he was there.
He bowed his head slightly as he would remove his hand from her shoulder, standing back up and gripping the Trident, letting it vanish in a flourish of crystal and energy, before standing up straight. He looked to Lightning, and bowed, hand on his chest, over his heart. Death seemed to follow him and these other outsiders like a plague, from what he had heard, and even in this world, they were not immune. The pain Serah felt, he understood, and with that understanding, he took two steps back and watched. He held little to no stock in Lightning's final moments, and she deserved the embrace of her family. These two women who fought so hard to save her… They needed to be the ones to do what would come next.
A terrible act to end a string of terrible acts of a demon, wearing the face of an angel.

She could hardly keep her head up against the stone and yet the moment the younger rose-haired girl fell to her knees she couldn't help but feel an instinct to try and catch her. Natural worry. "Now, don’t you go thanking us for using you as a pin cushion." A dryly humored huff escaped her nose, but her face remained mostly still. In a thin, straight line, a deep red peeked out from the corner of her lip, though she showed no signs of greater discomfort than she had been. The sudden hug, however, had her tensing somewhat. Lightning said nothing, nor made any noise to deter the girl from leaving sooner than she wished.
"I'm... I'm not dreaming right, you're really here? You're really you...""Yeah, think so,"there was the tired smirk again. Honestly, she was just glad the girl had gotten up from her knees to show no harm had befallen her. Soon after, her lips fell back to a straight and comfortable line at-rest. "We’re gonna patch you up." Blurred eyes slid over to the wild-haired warrior with a retort already forming in her mind only to stop short at the sight of a glittering transformation behind the two women; a recognizable moogle who's distraught expression didn't fit the form of his friendly face.
She and the familiar shared a moment's glance - a glance that knew its own implications, its own weight - and not a moment too soon when the two would-be saviors approached her with vigor and optimism. "Thats right!" Again her gaze tried to focus on the dragoon stepping closer, a hand reaching towards her own that rested on the staff of the lance for support. "This may hurt a bit." "We'll just get these things out and heal you right...." It took some effort but she'd managed to lift her gloved hand and press it against Fang's bicep with a grimace.
"Wait Kupo."
Her eyes didn't leave her friend's.
"Leave it."
Silently, she hoped to convey the depth of those two words. This lance did more than help her stay propped and stand on her feet. Her expression pleaded the warrior to understand that. "No!" It hurt, but she still kept from tearing away from the dragoon's focus until she was certain the message had been received. 'You've got to look out for her for me.' Though the words only bounced against the walls in her own head, she prayed Fang would know them. "No that's... Wrong it has to be!" What hurt worse? Hearing her cries, these moans of pain? Or not clearly recalling the name to reach out to her to try and give her comfort?... "I'm me. But I won't be, not for forever." And not for long.
Lightning struggled to look down to Serah - struggled - not from exhaustion or lack of focus. It was only when she physically saw the tears streaming down the girl's face that her own eyes began to fog. "Don't. Don't cry, not over me,"her face feigned relaxation and ease, accepting and at-peace. "My job's to keep you safe, right?" That much she knew; it felt carved into her bones. A part of her. Couldn't very well protect her if she was the one swinging the sword in her direction. Not her, not her friends, not anyone. "Hey, you're strong enough. I know it," through sheer power of will, she kept her neck steady enough to give the girl a firm nod of confidence.
After a steadying breath, teal vision lifted to the warrior again before her. As quiet as she was able under her breath, she begged an unflinching, "Hold her. I trust you." No sooner had the third party, a trusted ally and honorable man that she felt proud of for one reason or another, stand before her to free her of the trident that held her arm in place. It ached with the extra weight pulling her down, but only an uncomfortable sigh left her. He bowed, already having accepted a request that hung in the air unspoken, and she shut her eyes briefly to search within herself for any second thoughts. None. "It's okay," they opened, letting her head lean back against the stone again, "I can leave as myself, and I've you three to thank for that."
