Nick's reaction to the innovation of the fountain pen was too priceless. It really was revolutionary but she was from a world where they'd gone well beyond this. Though she could tell, Nick wasn't and that meant he was in for some "magic". The Magic of Technology that is~ "Stick with me, friend. I'll really dazzle you with some revolutionary goods." she muses aloud before he goes off. Once Nick assessed the examination area, he asked if he could begin and the Examiner tossed him something. It was a magic crystal, fortunately it would not break even if he fumbled it.
"The first part of your test is your magic capacity. Hold the crystal within both your hands focus upon your magic."
This crystal could determine two key things. The first was how much mana he had within him. The second, how much spells he could possess and what spell type they were.
"The second part of the exam, is display the spells you know and how efficient you are at using them. The targets are naturally provided to demonstrate offensive spells but aren't strictly required. What is required, is to perform your spells while holding that crystal in place. Think of it as a testing crystal."
Admittedly, the Examiner's explanation was a gross simplification. The crystal could do a bit more than that and had a slightly different name. However for the purposes of many prospective students, 'testing crystal' was perfect.

When asked 'which one?' Claire nearly broke into a giggle fit. Only marginally keeping it together with a 'heehee', as if sensing the chaos of this, not unlike a little gremlin. Alas, this was not the time for mischief and miraculously (for Claire anyway) regained composure. "The one that isn't a Farron~ You'll thank me after you meet her." she remarks, proudly. For who was the older one in this situation, huh?
"A healthy amount of skepticism is good. Further, leads to paranoia and P-T-S-D." once more, who was the older one here?!
"Oh, I like a mix of fruit and nuts but I can eat about anything, really, kupo." honest to a fault that one, Claire had seen him eat as much too. So she'd nod along before speaking up for own preferences.
"I prefer sweets, admittedly." that confession earned a snort from Mog. Claire's love of sweets was a bit more than 'preference'.
"Hopefully, we'll get to run into Cassandra next time but there's nothing wrong with needing some personal time." Claire remarks with a nodding approval.
"Well, besides solemnly swearing that this isn't about anything mischievous; I do believe that my intention will become clear after both your dates. It's difficult to explain it to rookies in matters of love. Now, my actual little Big Sis, would be able to explain it to you better but from what I ear, she's only ever pined for one guy and eh..." she looked to Mog.
"I don't think she's had any failures or slip ups that would lend to needing a more curated dating experience." She sounded rather mature in this matter.

Claire wasn't the type to get shy but she also wasn't the type who was praised in such a genuine manner either. It left her blushing faintly before she replied, "Then I'll be here, for you." that's what friends did, after all. Briefly, she wondered if she'd made any friends...her own age, that is. She got along with her classmates well enough, pranks aside. There was a certain guy she didn't get along so well with but her twin did. Honestly? It seemed more like she'd made good acquaintances her age but hadn't passed that barrier. She'd been having so much fun that it didn't seem to occur to her, until now.
In her past life, the situation had been similar; acquaintances she'd been on good terms with but due to the amount of chores she needed to do, as well as taking care of Serah, she'd likely taken those for granted. Tunnel vision, she was just living with a simple focus and now that she was free of that, there was still adjusting to do. Lost in her thoughts, it was her eyes, noticing Nick looking at her, lips moving that pulled her back from self-reflection. "Oh, the writing tool you used is called a fountain pen. The evolution of quill and ink. The ink bottle, as it were, is inside the 'quill'. The tip might feel similar to some extent but also a bit easier too. There are still places that offer quill and ink for tradition sake." she explains, glad to be of immediate help.
Fortunately, Claire paused, long enough to recollect the question prior to the pen! "Oh, yes. It's not about how much spells you know but your application. They're going to test how well you can think on your feet and use those spells creatively." there, a good bit of advice, from someone who passed said exam no less.
Once the registry was reviewed and the examiner ready, he'd come out and take Nick into one of the testing rooms. An area safe enough for magical testing, with some practice dummies for offensive spells.

Thinking about her Mother, really thinking about her; reminded her how much whiplash she'd gone through. It was as if she stood at a crossroads, a pivotal moment in time that she'd never be able to take back. In her mind, she was prepared to make a brave decision, to keep her remaining family whole. Only fate intervened, showcasing to her, in no uncertain times, the results of what she was going to decide upon her goodbye with her Mother. What kept her going was the realization of being granted a second chance, spared from the edge of the knife. There was a...consequence from it, in the form of another "sister" a twin of her own making no less. A sister that was a permanent reminder of the path she was going to choose, helped to keep her on the path her Mom truly wanted.
So, there wasn't much room for tears or at least, she'd blunted most of it. Maybe here and now, she could grieve a bit, preferably when the faculty was busy with Nick's testing. After all, there was something she really wanted to say, even if it was only for herself. First things first, fortunately; exhaling deeply, she'd offer a warm smile. "You're welcome. I'll be here if you want me to or I can wait outside." Claire admits, feeling her mood uplifted that someone so readily thought they could be friends.
...Friends, her decision would have estranged her from such. No friends just being her sister's keeper. Daunting was the first thought, surreal was the other. "I'd like it if we can be friends, that's what I'm here for." giving an affirmative nod, she'd head over to the registration desk to get things started.
"We've got a new applicant, I found them in the market." Claire explains in a boisterous tone, as if she'd done this many times before (she hasn't). This was just the patented Farron family confidence at work, meriting a chuckle before the formal process began. It'd start with Nick having to fill out a registration form, as one of the examiners was summoned from the faculty office. It'd give the two a bit of time to talk, Claire's eyes making it clear if there was any other advice, anything he'd want to know, now was the time to ask!

Claire had every confidence to provide a tour, given she'd thoroughly mapped out the campus at this point. How else could she pull off a heist. She was already planning out the order this tour would require, caught in her own mind and antics. Only to be forcefully ripped from it. She hadn't anticipated the story she was told but it certainly sent a wave of emotion through her. "I'm sorry to hear that. I...lost my Mom too. Well, I spent what I'm certain would be my last day with her, before I was brought here. She'd become really ill and the good days were waning..." Claire admits, as her hands clasp together.
"Those two spells, will be more than enough. Think of an exam as proving your skill. It will help the teachers know how far you've come in your understanding of magic. Then they will determine how best to teach you, creating a curriculum." Clair would inform him, trying to keep focused.
"Those feelings, let them guide you. It will...help, I'm certain." not unlike having his Mom guide him here in Zephon, giving him a new start. That's what Zephon was to Claire at least, a new beginning. To that end, they were now properly on campus ground and Claire was ready to bring him to the registration office but she'd stop just before entering the building from this entrance.
"So, are you ready? Don't be nervous, okay?"

Unique White Mage was certainly one way to put it. By her attitude and penchant for lightning magic, it'd be much, much easier to label her a black mage more so. Except she preferred using her single element, rather than the bevy of spells they had access to. So, what about Claire's actual talent as a White Mage? This was the enigma, the one that confounded teachers not named Serah, Claire...was really good at it! When it came to actual academics, there was no nonsense to be had for the young Farron. She had the drive to learn, to succeed and she embraced it.
So, why wasn't she at the University, doubling down on studying instead? Claire would say something about all work and no play...
"Not a problem, I'm happy to help~" Claire could tell by the desperation, that Nick had really struggled. Torrensten was quite bit, no mistaking that. Her heart naturally went out to him. "Ah, so you're just like me, an Offworlder. One we get you registered, I should give you a proper tour of this place. It's probably really intimidating when you've got to navigate it alone." Claire didn't have that problem given her sisters were veterans in Zephon but she could still recall her feelings when she first arrived. Her mind had gone into a particular tunnel vision. Planning out everything she needed to do in the event Serah ended up here too; well the Serah of her timeline.
Without that tunnel vision, Claire could multitask pretty effectively, which meant she always had way too much time on her hands. There was some adage about idle hands but she couldn't remember it. Instead, she'd focus on Nick~! "So, how much do you know so far. There is an entrance exam of sorts, a practical test, basically."An aptitude test but placement was better if you already knew some spells rather than only having the potential. Her own sister really helped her and Mog too. Maybe this was her chance to pay it forward a bit.
Claire would begin to guide Nick towards the University and true enough, once they were on a proper open road, the establishment was easy to see. One really needed to get past the hustle and bustle of the marketplace first. It could really give someone new sensory overload (which made the market an easy place to conceal herself after a prank or three).

Oh to be caught up in plotting, that she would be bumped into. Further, to surprisingly hold her position in spite of that. She did let out a "Hey!" as if used to being bumped into, given where the marketplace close by. When she turned to see her assailant; she noted he apologized rather quickly. Giving a faint smile, she made a bit of distance between them, so that she could properly adjust her garb and recompose herself.
"Hello...fellow student? Prospective student?" she tries this out and finds it a bit too formal for her liking. "You're right, well I'm a student at the University you seem to be searching for. Have you already enrolled or are you looking to enroll. Judging by your own setup, you're a Red Mage then? You've assessed me pretty well, ah but I like to dabble outside my White Mage role a fair bit." she admits waving her hand.
"Honestly, you're a fair bit away from the University either way. I'd be happy to escort you and answer questions. I kind of need a 'win' for today." what she meant was she needed to do a good deed, to counter her deviousness. Turning on her heel playfully, she'd turn to the direction, seemingly in the opposite direction of the market place. "This way, though we'll need to make a few turns too." she adds, instinctively before realizing her manners.
"Ah wait! Ahem, My name is Claire Farron by the way. This is Mog, what's your name?"

Young Nick might have been lost but it was a solution that could have been remedied with a bit more legwork. What he could not remedy, was an encounter with Claire Farron. He'd started with the marketplace, a high traffic area where those wide eyed souls, were eaten by hungry merchants. Ordinarily, Lumina would be here, negotiating trade deals. However, Claire had insisted on them playing "Switch" today, no doubt to Serah's dismay later.
This allowed for Claire to ditch classes and work on her own plans, provided she did a few chores for Lumina. Moments after Nick declared he'd keep looking, he'd find a teenage girl dressed in a white mage's cloak, with a more modern outfit, comprising a black t-shirt and beige pleated skirt resembling a school girl's uniform. A look that easily meant she'd at the very least know where the University was.
Which was true, as she was enrolled herself, yet what she was doing in the middle of a walkway that was leaving the marketplace, was up to Nick to find out. "Okay, so this route is a pretty good escape route from the University, Mog." he'd hear her say to her companion, a floating moogle and her co-conspirator in all things mischief.
"Now what we need is to be able to blend in easily. Maybe an illusion spell or something to quickly change clothes..." what, surely one didn't expect Claire to not be up to something, right?

"Allergies, huh? Great question to ask." Claire began, looking rather impressed that Caius had come up with that. In the young Farron's mind, this meant he was taking it seriously and getting into the right state of mind. Perfect!
"None that I'm aware of. Fit as a fiddle, really." she'd note having taken a moment of consideration for herself. Nodding to assure herself, she'd leave it at that. With food dominating her thoughts, she couldn't matchmake with the necessary finesse, on an empty stomach. Nor could they perform any pranks, besides.
"Big Sis doesn't have any allergies either, in case you're wondering!" she'd shout as he'd gone to look for ingredients and the like. As to his other remarks, Claire looked to Mog, trying to do her best while they waited. To think, the secret to taming the duo was an empty stomach, ah...embarrassing.
"It's not foreboding you know. Really, you shouldn't read too much into it. Everyone could use some help here and there. The assistance of one person in an inconspicuous act, can make all the difference. It's just perception." Claire states, though she wasn't sure it was entirely coherent. She'd blame hunger for not being so eloquent in her speech for the time being.
"Just trust me that you'll see what I mean and knowing you, address her needs effortlessly." for Claire had every confidence in Mr. Caius, where it counted. He just needed her help where he was...lacking.

"Big Sis is not related to us Farrons. She is an amazing person and she could use some help. I can't reveal any more than that, it's a surprise! Also, it's a proper date even if it's platonic." Claire stated, already crossing her arms before her chest and pouting. Her eyes screamed 'please don't screw this up', which at the very least meant she cared a lot about the person he was going to meet.
"Besides, I'd only provide the best of the best for you, Mr. Caius. You deserve this opportunity~" she really sounded like a proud daughter in this instance, even if she more saw this as helping out an older friend, maybe big brother. To Mog's credit, he simply whistled and was more interested in scoping the place out.
"Oh, that's a good approach. You're right, you shouldn't go into it with expectations and fanfare. As for the picture and it being a waste or not, I think the children would appreciate it. You don't need fanfare to have a good time. Besides, I'm the one covering the film cost, well the mana rather." which was true but not entirely, Lumina paid for the special magic crystal camera, Claire just benefited.
In regards to the tour or what little there was of it, Claire got to thinking. "Well of course I want to see the courtyard but I'd like to get something to eat first. Mog, I'm sure you're hungry too, we'd be eating around now if we were at home anyway." Mog, who was caught by surprise, was looking about the sitting area when he heard his name called. He spun around in surprise, before floating over to Claire.
"It is that time, huh, Kupo?" now the duo looked expectantly at Caius. Though how much could a teenage girl eat, right? Better question was, how much could Mog eat? Mysteries to play on the mind in this moment, even as the barrage of one problem swept away for something different entirely.
