"Judging by how...nonchalant you were just now, disappearing isn't...Death, per se?" Claire practically shook in place. The idea of people disappearing was not something she expected in this rather fantastical world. It was like the dark twist of a fairy tale rearing its ugly head, snapping her attention in place. Caius continued, leaving a wide eyed Claire who was thinking a mile a minute. It...did explain how comfortable Caius and Miss Chere were with rations, sure but... Part of her felt that was just in both their natures.
Pinching her left bicep, Claire steadies herself so that she can work on that sauce. Given the mention of rations, there had to be some dried fruits that could be used to whip up something sweet and tangy. Once she got her hands on something, she was off to it. Whilst Serah was better at her, she was still quite good in her own right. Had to be really, to help out her Mom. As she ground down some ingredients into a paste, she giggled when hearing Caius' warning. "Only an amateur would do that."
Admittedly, that did mean that Caius cooking was...of such a level, so she'd try to be mindful. Moving her mixing bowl and taking up position a short distance away from him. It helped to keep him in her sights, just in case of other accidents. Not anticipating the revelation of Caius' dating disasters, after her remarks, Claire was rewarded with...a crippling fact.
"Yikes..." she whispers, before shaking her head. Unable to hide the pity in her eyes, she tries to momentarily immerse herself in making the sauce. Her reply to his inquiries left Claire feeling mostly on top of things. Especially as she had to make sure neither date was as disastrous as the two he mentioned. Yet she couldn't help but look...surprised when Caius remarked that her dear, beloved 'Twin' sounded like trouble.
"Serah manages somehow..." Claire admits in a softer voice, before feeling indignant. "A good woman is worth the trouble!"

"Aww..." well, she tried and wasn't as disappointed after her initial remark. What was disappointing...the contents of the pantry. Rather, the lack of certain ingredients to flavour chicken in the way Claire preferred. For what was chicken with a bein rubbed down with a delicious sauce?!
"Honey garlic isn't really uncommon, don't you guys sweeten your food or provide some good seasoning?!" perhaps having a talented sister in the field of cooking left her all the more critical. Alternatively, she just wanted something sweet and given she was hungry, that could explain it.
"...I guess it's fine, I could whip up a decent sauce if you've got some staples in there. I'll leave the prep for the other ingredients to you~" Cooking was just like other chores to her. Launching into doing them and effectively making herself quite at home, was par for the course. Didn't help that she noticed his lack of finesse and all the post-it notes scattered about. She let him do the basics, with a scrutinizing gaze until she could no longer help herself.
Leveraging the notes, she'd get together what she could as she knew her way around kitchens. All while preparing to answer the smart questions asked about his dates. "A plus for smart questions, Mr. Caius. Though I am a bit worried about that last one. Who have you been interacting with that would go into irrational rage over something so...small?" there was a mix of awe and genuine concern at that. Said worry, called into question once more, who the adult here was.
"Fortunately for the dates I picked out, you're assured to be free of such woes. That kind of anxiety is no good for a...beginner, such as yourself. Big sis is very mild mannered and can talk about anything, really. She's super easy to like, she can charm anyone out of their last gil, only to then pay for everything herself." upon noting this, she rolled up her sleeves after washing her hands and got right into making idle hands useful.
"...My twin sister on the other hand...Hmm. Sometimes we're a lot alike but other times, she's...an entirely different person. It's...a shock to the system, I only ever get to thinking about it when we're apart." seemingly, a mind field was coming about, not that she wanted to sabotage her 'twin', she just didn't have anyone to talk to about her concerns.

When Nick mentioned this may as well be the next chapter in his life, those words strongly resonated with Claire. For she very much viewed her arrival and the time in Zephon to date, as her own next chapter. Completely different from the bit of planning and tragic inevitability that she was mentally preparing for back in her home world. Her sisters were rather wary of Gods but Claire was happy to thank whichever God or Goddess brought her to Zephon.
With Nick taking things in stride, their conversation continued and she found herself feeling a sense of ease. "To tell you the truth, I've at least seen Mr. Caius in action. It's the rest of the Dragon blades I'd like to see in action, yourself included!" Who knows, maybe she herself would become one someday~? Though, it didn't seem likely, for whilst she had the rare privilege of knowing how she'd turn out in the future. Present Claire didn't have the same inclinations as the one Serah went on to grow up with. Destiny was changed, likely by way of divine meddling. All it took was bringing her to a different world at a critical moment in her life.
Now she embraced the spontaneity life brought and after she had pointed out the board and some suitable jobs, she moved her right hand at random to grab one. In a graceful motion, she proceeded to hand it to Nick. "Try this one out." As for what destiny had in store:
Dear Prospective Adventurer,
I'm in need of a courier of sorts, to deliver various goods across town from the market. Amateurs welcome and the pay will be worth it. Please, help an old man out, eh?
Sincerely, Mr. Lawrence
"So, how's it look? I honestly haven't done one of these for myself yet. I've been...focused on my studies. No time like the present to try." that and she felt keeping Nick company until he was confident in this new life routine wasn't a bad idea. She herself had family already in this world, including her "twin" to rely on. That wasn't the case for Nick, so she had to pay it forward for her fellow Outlander.

"Honestly, the best part of the initial classes is learning about these monsters and their weaknesses. Better to learn that in the classroom, ahead of your guild missions. The locals here have a bit of advantage when it comes to wild life, monsters and local history. Fortunately, we can close the gap~" Claire doesn't miss a beat, her mind going towards the monsters she encountered back at that cabin on the outskirts of Provo.
Admittedly, going through this unfamiliar place, defenseless or not, was much easier with her family here. She had her little Big sister, which was more of a shock than the monsters. Then she had...her other self, the reminder of what her life would become had she got the chance to follow through after meeting her Mother for what she felt might be the last time. As fun as it was to have a twin of sorts, Claire didn't forget how and why it ended up this way. There had to be something more to this, yet she hadn't pieced it together beyond a chance to be herself. "So long as you treat this like an adventure, you'll adjust to it at your own pace. You've also got help, way more than you realize."
With her timing, the two came upon the job board and the bustle that came with it. The adventuring culture, particularly of those who weren't mercantile leaning in Torensten; was a sight to behold! There were numerous pinned parchments on the job board, detailing various odd jobs. Claire was looking with a relatively calm gaze, until she found the section of the board she wanted to present to Nick.
"This section here is suitable for younger folk. These jobs focus on helping those around Torensten. You'll meet plenty of the locals, learn their stories and do a good thing for those in need, particularly the elderly. They pay surprisingly well too." Claire explains before gesturing to the section in particularly, all the way on the right side. There was a header for inter-Kingdom and outer-Kingdom, to further help break up the location and populace.
"You should start with jobs closer to the University and it's surrounding area. Then as you feel...adventurous, work your way out to the outskirts. Oh also, I'd advise your first outskirts jobs be with the Dragonblades. Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing the rest of the guild in action at some point."

"He saved you from monsters too, huh?" Claire couldn't help but chuckle. "The monsters I encountered weren't so strong but I didn't now magic when I arrived, I was...defenseless." admitting this caused Claire to grip her left bicep. A lot of that experience could have been traumatizing had Caius not shown up. Instead, besides the shock, she was largely in awe. To that end, she owed Caius a lot and that was why she had great respect for him. Even if she did think of him more like an older brother, than a proper adult like her Mom!
Alas, despite being embrassed about essentially losing, Nick was right. Someone was bound to be first and fate had determined Claire and Nick would meet at this moment, for this particular purpose. University life would have much in store for them and the prospect of having a good friend, from another world no less, was a great feeling. "Well then, as good friends, let's head to the Job board. It's important to make whatever money you can, besides Dragon blade missions. Call it a rainy day fund." Claire states and it with everything settled for Nick's registration, she'd happily lead him outside and off campus once more.
"That reminds me, I should make some time to give you a tour of the campus. Well, you might get a small tour for orientation but I've learned some special spots~" given her mischievous ways, she was probably underselling her discoveries. Oh but they weren't all places that would get someone in trouble either! There were places good for studying or taking break, for example that really added to one's student life.

Claire felt a sense of relief as well as mild awe when Nick smiled. He was a stronger person than her, given his circumstances right now. She doubted she could smile so genuinely if she were in his shoes. She'd be too filled with worry about Serah, which...sometimes she did still worry about her. That is, her Serah because while she had confidence that her life turned out...fine; could things change in her native timeline with her missing? One of the many unanswered questions and thus, a paradox of Zephon.
Thankfully for Nick, Claire was here with him or so she was still feeling. He took her advice quite smoothly, so when he surprised her with being a member-in-training for the Dragonblades? Claire's jaw dropped! Further, he even mentioned meeting Caius already. Claire's surprised look left a pregnant pause in the air. When she finally came out of it, there was a large sweat drop. "I can't believe Caius got to you first." she sounded defeated but it was only temporary. Nothing a quick shake of her head, followed by a lengthy sigh, wouldn't resolve. "Caius also helped me out when I first arrived. When I mentioned their Co-leader, I was referring to him." surprise was turning into mild embarrassment for now.
"Well, since you're a Dragonblade, even if in-training, you're pretty much covered. We can still head to the job board if you want to make some pocket money of course. Honestly? If you're looking to do any kind of job, better to go the Rest and do it through your guild instead. Also means you'd have a roof over your head, cheaper than staying at an Inn. Well, unless you want a change of pace..." now she felt really silly but it was washing over her steadily.
"...So, where to?" she'd leave their destination up to Nick.

"Well then, first things first." Claire declares once he opted to take her suggestions. He'd need to fill in those elective classes and then came the issue of payment. "My older twin sister will cover you for now." no consultation with Lumina on this, of course... She approached the registration desk and proceeded to make the arrangements. It's a good thing the twins weren't real twins in the conventional sense. Claire and Lumina were the same person, with one being a fragment of her older self, from the future. At least it was the future for Claire. Thus, while she didn't consult her 'twin', she knew what Lumina would say and do in a way twins couldn't replicate completely.
Even as she could hear said twin saying 'For emergency purposes, okay, Claire?' in her mind as she made the payment. Claire effectively wrote what was like a modern day check/cheque. "That should do it, there's no rush in paying this back or anything. So when we get to the job board, try to take things that you'll be comfortable with, rather than going for a major payout right away, okay?" honestly, she'd prefer to help him get enough for living expenses at the very least. Being an Outlander was hard, it made her grateful that she reunite with her family in Zephon, instead of having to do this all alone.
All that remained was certain signatures from Nick and then the admittance scroll, which was identification. It would help with some of the jobs too honestly. "There's also another good means to earn money long term. There's a certain guild of mercenaries that I'm constantly frequenting." Claire begins, her facial expression lighting up at the thought. "They're called the Dragonblades and I know their leader. Well Co-leader, Co-founder. He's a nice guy and I've been helping him with his...love life." or rather, the lack there of. Having set him up on some dates, Claire had a feeling that was going to change. Which meant, he'd owe her and thus her warm smile was becoming very mischievous indeed.
"I'll introduce you to him eventually. They do their operations from the Wyvern's Rest." that should do it, though she took a moment to ponder, left finger and thumb grasping her chin. While her right hand rested upon her hip, contemplating if she'd covered all the essentials for someone who just arrived. "There are some inns close to campus, as well as near the job board. It's essential to have a roof over one's head. Your choice where you'd like to setup temporary dwelling until you're situated, Nick?" Claire would conclude as the room typically covered a meal at least. The remainder of the money would be for other meals and certain equipment for studying, assuming the young Farron did the basic math and logistics correctly.

"These classes do have a basic cost for purposes of covering operations, it is very cheap. There are mandatory classes that one takes in order to pursue various roles within Torensten itself. There are also elective courses, that you choose to better yourself as a Mage. Those costs vary but as you're at the beginning of your studies, the costs would be lower than ones for experienced mages."
The instructor explains and once they were back outside, he'd be able to obtain the documents to register for the courses. Beneath the syllabus, there was a cost listing for the fundamental courses. When Nick explained how it went, Claire nodded. "I'm confident you'll be able to do it. What I'm worried about now is, you're new here, right? I have a twin sister who arrived in Zephon years before I did. She's been helping my sister and I financially. I'm certain she would be happy to help you out, my other sister works here as a Teacher so you'll probably be in one her classes. She'll also help you out." Claire effectively volunteered both her sisters without consulting them but they were nice and it wouldn't be a big deal.
This had kept her busy as she was thinking of which classes to recommend when it seemed Nick had a moment. She looked to his staff and then the expression on his face and seemed a bit puzzled. She knew enough to be quiet until the moment passed, it would be quite rude to interrupt after all. Once it concluded, she approached Nick and pointed at the suggested electives. "You want to be a Red Mage right? The combat teacher is quite excellent. It's also one of the cheaper electives." Red Mages with their flexibility could do what Black and White Mages couldn't, that's what made this elective quite valuable.
"My next recommendation is this class about Magic Crystal usage, they're a big part of the culture here." it was also the class she had the most mischief in. Even though she had a casual smile on her face while mentioning it. There wasn't as many electives for a freshman. Bringing down the initial costs was an important factor. As the mage grew, there were more options that weren't necessary to work in Torensten. These were thus personal advancement classes. Incorporating more theory like conventional university.
"Lastly and I guess this is fairly important. If you'd like to make your own money, there's a job board further into the city, I can show you when we're finished."

When casting Protect the crystal took on a white glow and confirmed to the Examiner that the spell was successful and what type it was. He didn't seem to write down any results, only observing Nick's magic in action. The next spell was Fire and the crystal attempted to turn black but due to the spell fizzling out the first time, it took on a grey colour. Fortunately, Nick's determination meant the Examiner didn't have to urge him to try again. The second casting of fire was much better and hit the target, creating a spectacular display as the dummy was alight but didn't spread the flames. Instead it would vanish into particles of light and a new dummy would emerge in its place once the spell effects ended.
The crystal did turn black this time in response to Fire. When the spell ended, it became a solid red and only then did the examiner speak up:
"I see, you're a Red Mage or at least, you have the potential to be one. Your offensive side will be what we work on, as it requires a larger capacity of mana. Support magic is more about efficiency and speed. I noticed it with how effortlessly you casted protect. This is wonderful progress and a good time to enter our University. I'd like to formally welcome you to our University and help you with enrolling in certain classes. We have a few where mages of differing types are all together and then some specialized courses for each type of Mage. We can speak about that more once we leave this testing area. Do you have any questions?"
He'd approach Nick after stating the results as he'd hold his hand out to receive the crystal. That was what recorded his exam results and would aid his teachers in curating their curriculum going forward. The examiner was more a witness, verifying the results and adding much needed human oversight into the process. Soon enough, Nick would be able to return and true enough, Claire was waiting outside patiently.
"So, how did it go~?" she'd ask though she was pretty confident he'd pass. There were a few electives that she could recommend to him if he wanted additional advice. It would place Nick in quite a few of her classes. Given her own flexibility, Claire could be a Red Mage as well. It's just, she wasn't quite sure where she wanted to go as of yet. Only that she wanted to get more combat experience in addition to using her magic.

When Caius admitted it was too late, Claire nearly frowned but opted to sigh instead. He'd clearly proven her point and really, who was the adult here?! Evidently, Caius was given his remarks on food and how all her sisters would get on him for trying to pass off dessert as a meal. "Oh? That can just be our secret, Mr. Caius~" her innocent smile was likely not fooling anyone.
"...Ahem, that said, let me think." as she doubted Caius could keep such a secret when pressed by any of them. "Chicken, rice, a side of veggies and coated with a honey garlic would do." seemingly her love of sweets extended to sauces, fruits, and other things too~
"Well, I'm not an expert, Mog would know better. I do believe you're right, that seems pretty elementary to me. Until he gets here though, I'll have to distract her a bit. When she fusses about Lumina it does keep her completely busy. I guess she feels guilty about how things turned out too." to which she took a moment to look Caius over, her gaze neutral at first before it turned into a scrutinizing one. As if she was some old lady, sizing up a potential match.
"Maybe..." she says before looking to Mog and nodding. "Serah does love cooking dinner. Once you've eaten her cooking, you'll see why it's hard to explain my preferences. Adults love having dinners, so they can socialize. Let's see how your dates turn out first. I also have some events coming up at the University." Claire admits, thinking to put this plan on hold for now. She needed more data and given the rookie she was working with, best not to overwhelm him.
"Do you have any questions, I can give you some tips?" Claire strongly suspected he'd need it, less his past experiences paint over his new ones. Then again, she was pretty confident in her choices but since Caius tended to overthink things...
