Garnet paused when Mikoto refused to withhold information from Zidane. She was about to protest, but she realised that it was an unreasonable one. She wondered when she had become so selfish, whether or not that was what she truly was doing. She paused, turning away for a moment from Mikoto, her hands twirling the pendant around her neck with nervous energy, before she turned back to face her, nodding. "You're right. I'm sorry. It's not fair for me to ask you to do that," she admitted. She just had to trust. Trust that even if Zidane knew Kuja was here, he would do what was best, and come for her. And if he didn't... well, she had to believe he had his reasons for that too. He had gone after Kuja because Kuja was in trouble at the Iifa tree. Now, he wasn't. Now, she was. Oh, maybe not imminent danger, but she was alone and not safe. She had to believe when given the option, he'd come to her. "But he chose Kuja over his friends. Over... me. At the Iifa Tree..." she hesitated, and she shook her head again. "That's unfair of me. Zidane goes to those in need. He always helps, even when it's the hard thing to do. I have to... trust him, to do what's best. To go where he's needed. If... he doesn't come to me first... It's because there was something more important. I trust Zidane. I have to believe in him, or what I feel for him means nothing," she told Mikoto, although it wasn't for her benefit. It was for Garnet's own. Like she had to say the words out loud to truly make them real. To make sure that SHE believed in them.
Garnet hesitated when Mikoto told her that she fussed over her appearance for others. She supposed she was right in a sense, but it wasn't entirely true. "There are... times, Mikoto, when you're right. When I wear a gown and my royal jewellery and I do it because it's expected of me, but... most of the time that's not true. I do it because it makes me happy. It makes me feel good about myself. Sometimes, it brings me comfort. Like this pendant," she held it up for Mikoto to see. "It's large and not particularly practical to wear, but... It connects me to something. Something I didn't even originally understand... I like... having it. I find its presence comforting. Sometimes a scent is like that. Something that wraps around you, private only to you and those closest to you... It can be comforting. It can make you feel confident, it can make you feel safe... It can make you feel.... you..." She still thought Mikoto was thinking too logically. It was difficult. Explaining what was perhaps at core an illogical concept to a being of pure logic.
She wanted a light, floral scent, and that made Garnet smile. "You have similar tastes to me," she said with an encouraging smile. She looked through the various perfumes, and picked one out, reading the label. She sprayed a little into the air and breathed it in. It had a subtle scent. "How about this one? It has hints of lavender. You might like it," she held it out to offer. It wasn't the one Garnet wore. She thought that would be odd, the two wearing the same, but it was pleasant all the same. She wouldn't MIND wearing it...

Faris suggested that the cure rod was for 'men without much ability' and that he was one of them, and Garnet laughed politely, but shook her head. "I think that you may be mocking me, Captain Faris," she teased back, hands on her hips. "I don't know much about you, but I'm fairly certain that you do not lack for ability," she replied encouragingly. She knew that Faris had only been joking, but she wanted to make sure he knew that she supported him no matter what. He had shown her nothing but kindness, and Garnet wanted to return the favour as much as she could.
"I just felt that I owed you thanks," Garnet admitted somewhat awkwardly when Faris admitted he'd have turned down a thank you gift. "Arriving here has... been difficult, and you've really helped me. A port in my own storm... uh, if I used that phrase correctly," she was sure it was something like that, and it seemed appropriate for the pirate captain, although now she was worried it had come across as insensitive.
She tested the staff as instructed, giving it a few awkward swings. It was obvious from how she was swinging it that she wouldn't inflict much damage, but it felt similar to the weight she was used to, and it reminded her of some of the staffs she had wielded back when they had first started their adventure. It would do. She wasn't planning to hit anything with it anyway. "It's ideal," she smiled, giving a nod of thanks. She was glad that Faris had checked. She knew it was no match for his blade, but it would do the job Garnet needed it to do.
She hesitated though as Faris gave his advice. It caught Garnet off guard, and she was about to protest, that yes, she was trained as a royal and she did well in that role, but that wasn't what was needed right now, when she realised that was Faris's point. Garnet would spend most of her life on a throne, leading a nation. In truth, while she always felt like she was a burden on others, she WAS prepared for that role. She could handle it. It was just that she kept seeming to find herself pulled away from it. Pulled to places where those skills were useless...
...or was the truth that she liked being away from it, she LIKED adventuring, and a big part of her wanted to be better at it because this was where she felt most at home?
"...thank you. Those are... very kind words," Garnet smiled, although it was slightly uneasy. "I think... I'm still learning who I am. I thought I had figured it out after my last adventure, but... perhaps I'm still not certain. But I suppose, I should be grateful I get these opportunities to find out. I might not quite be all Dagger, but I'm not all Garnet either, and I have to accept that." she nodded. "Thank you again, for all of your help, Captain. It is far more than I could have asked for."

For a moment, everything had been going so well. It seemed that Quistis had solved the puzzle of the strange room (following Garnet's suggestion, which made her feel significantly less useless), and they were making progress. But then they realised Bartz was gone, and everything suddenly felt more solemn. The boy had seemed completely out of place, but no more out of place than an Alexandrian Queen, Garnet thought. But with him gone, they had the option to push on or turn back, and Aerith chose to turn back. Garnet felt a knot of guilt. She liked to think she was compassionate and kind, she should have gone back too. It felt like Alexandria all over again, when they fled and left Steiner, Beatrix and Freya to defend her. To fight for her. To maybe even die for her. She hated that feeling. She hadn't wanted to feel it ever again.
But here she was. Aerith and Bartz staying behind so that they might press on. They had to make it worthwhile.
"The boats appear magical and we do not know what we shall face up ahead. We should take one boat each," Garnet suggested, climbing into turtle boat, similar to the one Tellah was in. For a moment, she remembered Madain Sari, and sitting in the small boat so much like the one she had ridden to the Mist Continent as a child, and all the memories that came back with it. Zidane had joined her as it drifted. She wondered if she'd have made it back to land if he hadn't. Boats were common transport in Alexandria, but she had never had to control one herself. "I suppose we'll see where they take us. We should be ready for anything. There are only a few of us left, and if we are attacked, we are all mages..." Garnet fretted nervously. Quistis at least was a mage, she thought. Tellah definitely was. And Garnet knew she was, and worse, Ramuh would be useless with all this water around. Her only hope was that they found their way across.

Garnet knew that Mikoto's answer was still stilted, and perhaps not as useful as she'd have hoped, but it was better than nothing. Still, she was slightly concerned. If Mikoto also mentioned Kuja, would Zidane come to her side first? He had abandoned her once for Kuja... but that had been different, hadn't it? He might rush off before he even got to say. She hesitated. "Thank you, Mikoto. Please make sure you do tell him, however. I... have a feeling he shall become distracted once he knows that you and Kuja are here," she suggested, hoping she sounded tactful, and she wasn't letting her hatred for Kuja colour her request.
Her point about scents mixing was a good one, and Garnet paused, realising she hadn't really considered that. The truth was that Garnet couldn't really remember a time that she didn't wear perfume and that she didn't have a thousand bottles lined up for her to choose from. Even when travelling the world, by that point, she knew exactly what she liked, so finding it had been easy. She had to put herself in the mindset of somebody who had never worn any, and had no idea what she was looking for. Mikoto would need to approach this differently. "I suppose so, yes," Garnet admitted. "They may have card that you can spray it on to test it. Most places do. I never needed it, I suppose... I always knew what I was looking for," she said somewhat awkwardly, as if the admission that she knew so much about scents would make her seem frivolous or in some way shallow.
Her question about the purpose of the scent was somehow harder to answer. It was somehow one of those things that Garnet just naturally knew but also didn't really know how to put into words. She hesitated for a moment, and tried to think of a way to say it so that Mikoto would understand. "Well, it's... to make you smell nice," Okay, well, that bit was obvious. "Which can... do lots of things. It can make people like you more... but... I think the real reason is because it makes you feel better about yourself. All of this should be about making yourself feel good. It's a way of expressing yourself, of being yourself, but of projecting who you are outwards to those around you," she tried to explain, getting a bit more passionate when she did. "As a Queen... I'm... expected to look a certain way, dress a certain way, even smell a certain way, but you don't need any of that. You're Mikoto, all you need to do is find the way you want Mikoto to be. That's why I keep telling you, don't do it for anybody but yourself," Garnet smiled delicately. She doubted after all her efforts so far any of it would sink in, but at least she had tried.
Mikoto mentioned that she thought Garnet looked happy, and Garnet made sure the smile remained on her face. She wasn't happy, of course. How could she be? Another world, torn away from Zidane again, Kuja, the destroyer of her Kingdom, the murderer of her mother, the abuser of her body, still alive... She couldn't be happy. But Garnet had experience at pretending to be happy, at forcing a smile even when she was sad, and she could manage it if it would help Mikoto out. And so she did so. "Well, then, maybe it worked," Garnet answered in regards to the treat. "Your cheeks tingling and energy being up is a start. That sounds like happiness to me," Garnet said, hoping that it helped as they walked into the shop.
"Look at the labels, Mikoto, they will tell you what the scent is made of," Garnet suggested. At least, they'd give hints. She thought it'd help. "What would you like your scent to be?" she asked, hoping it'd prompt the genome to do some thinking and ask herself the same question.

"Your party put their gil in the hands of a pirate?" Garnet asked for a moment, surprise lacing her voice. Surprise that didn't last long, because she immediately thought about her own team, her own friends, and realised that she was very much a pot calling the kettle black. "The man we trusted to look after all of our gil, who we trusted with... far more than that... was a thief who we first met when he was attempting to kidnap me, so perhaps I am not one to judge," she smiled a little. "The friends I travelled with were something of a larger group," she said, feeling that she had to introduce them, now that Faris had done the same. "There was... the thief I told you about... A man... I trusted... I trust... with my life. I know that sounds absurd, the Queen and the thief, but... he is everything to me. There was my bodyguard, a loyal knight, although... if I am entirely honest, while loyal and capable in combat, I think less reliable with gil and able to speak to the common folk than even I was... A young boy, the kindest, gentlest soul I have ever met... who faced... the worse trauma you can imagine, but stayed by our side regardless... A brave Dragoon knight, noble, kind and strong, who taught me so much about being a strong person... A strange creature from the marshlands, who joined us only to seek out food, but was a loyal ally... A young girl, a summoner, like me, from my true home... she was so full of confidence, no matter what... she was so young, but in many ways I admired her confidence... and a mercenary... he was... unusual, he joined us only to learn why we travelled together, although I am not sure that he ever did..." she finished. "I tried my best to learn. No, that is a lie, I did learn, an awful lot. If you think I am hopeless now, you should have seen me when I first left Alexandria!" she said with a smile and a light laugh as she followed behind Faris, keeping close as warned. "But the only time I was left in charge of our coin I was pick pocketed and lost 2000 gil! I think after I told the others about that they were somewhat reluctant to let me carry any money again," she joked. Not that she HAD told the others about the little Treno incident until later on. She hadn't trusted Zidane not to mock her for it at first...
She tried not to smile at the thought of Faris's gentle sister setting somebody on fire with a staff. It seemed... brutal, compared to the gentle reputation that Faris had built up for her. Then again, she doubted some people would believe the creatures Garnet could summon, given her nature. She didn't seem the type to be able to summon a giant dragon on command. Not that she could at that moment in time... "I do not intend to light anybody on fire, so I think something that enhances my magic would be appreciated," Garnet smiled in response to the possible weapon choices. It would leave her largely defenceless herself, but she wasn't intending to go into combat alone anyway. Better White Magic made her a better White Mage, and therefore more likely to find people willing to work with her, so that worked for her.
"I must confess, I never understood it myself. It seemed custom designed for those that could cast white magic, but if you could cast white magic, then you hardly required the rod to heal people, did you?" she pointed out when Faris laughed about the cure rod. Instead, she decided to go for the more obvious option. "I think that I shall take the rod that enhances magical ability. I do not wish to cast thunder at anybody and already can cure, but making my spells more potent could be useful," she said after only a moment's consideration. She felt the option was easy.
She began counting out the gil, ready to hand it over, giving Faris an appreciative smile. "I would offer to buy you something in thanks for your help, but I am afraid my funds are... somewhat limited, at the moment," she admitted sheepishly.

Garnet, for her part, thought she might have noticed surprise on Amarant's face when she offered the coins, but she wasn't sure why. Oh, she knew that she was often underestimated by those around her; people had always seen the princess and not the girl when she had been travelling, but also she had thought that those who travelled with her had learned otherwise by now. Yes, Garnet had always been part of a team, she had always relied on others, but just as much as they had relied on her. She had fought alongside them and never turned away. She had stood her ground even when all hope seemed lost. She had been given a dozen opportunities to leave the party and live out her live as a Queen, to be protected and safe, but she never did. When it came down to it, she had been standing there, weapon in hand, ready to defy a God of Death itself, just like the others.
It always caught her off guard that it seemed that meant nothing to some people, that they had still not learned that underneath her softly spoken voice and white magic, she was at least a capable adventurer. In a sense...
She paused for a moment, wondering if the sum Amarant had offered was correct. He could easily be, what was the phrase? Ripping her off? But what choice did she have? Besides, if he wanted to steal her money, he'd just take it and she'd never see him again. It seemed a risk she was willing to take. She only paused, thinking for a moment, and then gave a determined nod, turning the 80 gil over. That didn't leave her with much for a staff, but it should be enough.
"Very well. You acquire the tent and the food, I shall acquire a weapon, and if I can, any potions or ether to back us up. I'll meet you back here in two hours?" she suggested, not that finding him would be particularly hard, but she felt like she needed to organise something and have something resembling a plan. The party separating to explore and meeting again was a common occurrence back when they'd travelled the world, and she was more than willing to do it again. She was confident she'd find him again...
She just wished she felt the same way about Zidane...
And just like that, the snake was upon them, attacking. For a moment, it reminded Garnet of the creatures in Fossil Roo that had chased them and proved so resilient. This one looked smaller, however, and with any luck, the two of them would be enough to take it down. The stranger leapt into battle, and it took Garnet a moment to reorient her senses to not cry out a warning after him. It had been a while since she had been in battle, and she had always known her comrades abilities, but she didn't with this man. But he had a weapon, and she had to trust that he could handle the close quarters combat, so that she could handle the magic from a distance.
She watched in surprise as he phased, moving with incredible speed. It vaguely reminded her of how she had seem Amarant move in his first duel with Zidane, but even faster, leaving a ghostly after-image behind as he moved just a few steps to the side of the creature, dodging its attack. But it was vicious, and fast, and it seemed smart too, knowing just how to move and target him and recover quickly. She knew that she needed to do something to try and throw it off. Closing her eyes, Garnet began to cast, her hair flying back as she held her hands out, almost imagining where her staff would be if she actually had it with her.
Inky blackness descended over the snake's eyes, turning the already dark orbs utterly black, hovering behind a cloud of thick smog. Blind. It should reduce the creature's ability to target her ally, and that would allow him to strike at it properly. "It's blinded! Now's your chance!" she called, in case he hadn't understood what she had done, even as she took several steps back, keeping her distance because she really didn't want it sensing her out and attacking her. Without her staff, she had no way to hold it off at all, and that was definitely not a good thing...

A smile flickered on Garnet's face when Mikoto continued, telling her how she wasn't a genome. That was true, and Garnet was glad of it. She had been through enough earth shattering revelations about her life to not have to also learn that she came from another planet. It was quite enough to learn that she was a long lost summoner, that her adopted mother wanted to kill her, and that her entire life had been a lie. She was quite glad she didn't have to wrestle with being a genome too. Not that she should judge. Zidane showed that being a genome was just the same as being a human or summoner or anything else. Where you were born wasn't who you were.
"You're right, Mikoto. I'm not a genome. But Zidane is, and given that he has risked his life to save mine.... several times, and that he journeyed the world and staged an entire play beneath a cloak just so that he could reveal himself to me as a surprise," and what a surprise that had been, "...I suspect that he wants to be reunited with me as badly as I wish to be reunited for him. So consider this something you are doing for Zidane, not for me." It was a bit of a shame that Garnet had to get Mikoto to think of it that way, but it was obvious she still had a way to go yet before she'd establish actual friendship with the girl. "That would be fine, Mikoto," Garnet smiled at her agreement. Of course, it wasn't really ideal, but what else could Garnet ask for? Besides, if she knew Zidane, and she was pretty sure she did, he'd come rushing to her, Mikoto or not, so it would help. "I'm staying at a small inn at the moment. I get a discount for helping patching up visiting adventurers. It's not exactly luxurious, but we stayed in much worse back when we travelled Gaia," she smiled wistfully. She still remembered her horror at having to share a room with the others in Dali. After some of the experiences they had, camping in tents during storms, sleeping in cells in Kuja's desert palace, the scummy inn in Treno, that small place in Dali seemed positively royal. She gave Mikoto the name, and continued on.
Mikoto it seemed had forgotten about her promise to buy perfume, but now seemed to perk up at her reminder. Garnet felt like making a sarcastic remark when Mikoto asked if the shop was near, as if naturally Garnet would know, but... well, actually, she did know. Garnet had been raised a princess after all, she did like to smell nice, and she'd found a shop not long after she had arrived. She told herself she'd thought it was a potion shop at first, but that was a tiny white lie. She'd just wanted something to make her feel a bit more comfortable in her own skin in this strange world. "As matter of fact, I do know a shop. This way," Garnet said, gesturing for Mikoto to follow her. She paused for a moment, having to reorient herself, it was still confusing finding her way around, but she was fairly certain it was down this street. "I'm guessing you've never worn perfume before, and you're going to wonder what it is, so you're looking for a scent you'd like to wear on your body. They'll have tester bottles, so you just spray a little on your wrist, and see if you like it. Remember, you'll be wearing it all day, so make sure it's one you like and that it isn't too strong," Garnet advised with a smile. It was almost like having a little sister. She had a feeling she had given Eiko similar advice once...
"Here we are," she said, as she took a bite into the sweet snack. It did taste nice, she had to admit, although it didn't really possess any magical ability to cheer her up. She put a smile on for Mikoto's sake though. "I don't know about you, but that cake made me feel a lot better, don't you think?" she said, smiling the best that she could. After all, if it cheered Garnet up, maybe it'd cheer Mikoto up as well, or at least, make her think she had cheered up. It would be nice to see Mikoto smile, to know that she felt at least slightly comfortable with her...

Garnet felt like she was on the cusp of understanding, but somehow, still missing the obvious. The sphere of the crystal looked as if it could be removed, and other inverted spherical grooves suggested that such crystals could be inserted in them. But the crystal was seven feet up in the air, beyond the grasp of any of them. If only Zidane was there, with his climbing skills...
For a moment, the image of one of them sitting on the shoulders of another to try and reach the crystal flashed across her mind, and she dismissed it as ridiculous. She sighed, leaning back, peering up into the dark, watching the trail of the grooves in the wall and how they lead to what looked like disused water wheels of some description. She paused, squinting a little, trying to take it in. "There's something up there. I'm sure... water is somehow related to this solution," she speculated, but she was aware that it was utterly aimless. Who would have thought that water was the solution to a puzzle within the Water Temple?
"Can any of us climb up there to try and remove the crystal? Perhaps it unblocks a flow of water. That, or we should cast our own spells on the water wheels..." Again, she wished Vivi was there. She knew that the others could likely cast such a spell, but she felt so unsure when she didn't know who any of them were. She supposed she had to learn to rely on their abilities.
She turned to them, feeling confused and lost. She wasn't sure why Quistis had asked her what to do; she might have been a Queen back home, but here she felt like the least experienced adventurer, despite everything she had been through. At least to lead the party. Usually when Garnet made decisions on her own, disaster followed, and she wasn't sure it was an experience she wanted to replicate...

Garnet wasn't sure if she felt relieved or disappointed when Faris said that she was a princess 'through and through'. In some ways, it was good, because it meant that despite her heritage not being what so many believed, her upbringing had done its job. She was ready to lead her people. But on the other hand, being a princess had made her so woefully unprepared for a life of adventure. It hadn't been a good thing, it had meant that she was naive and sheltered and not at all ready for the dangers of the world, and she had really believed she had grown beyond that. But maybe she hadn't. Maybe beneath it all she was still the same sheltered little girl.
She knew that Faris hadn't meant it that way, however. That it had been intended as a compliment, and she tried to smile back. "A Queen now," she said a little uneasily. "It's so strange... Being... who I am, I mean... It's all I have ever known and yet... I don't think... people realise how much I look up to others like yourself. You're a pirate, you learned to fight and take care of yourself and help others while I was learning which make-up brush to use and what tiara I should wear for which occasion. I feel like... sometimes people think being a Queen would make me arrogant, but... after what I have seen, what I have done, I realise that it just left me woefully unprepared. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened had somebody else found me as a child. Would I have made a good pirate? Or would I have always been... this naive child, who needed somebody else to show them the world?" she realised that she was letting her thoughts get away from her again. It was far too much to dump on somebody she had just met. Any kind of identity crisis like that was unneeded, and besides, she HAD grown into a new person, hadn't she? Zidane had shown her a whole new way of living, and she had embraced it. Yes, she was a Queen, but an adventurer too. She wasn't the helpless little girl she was making herself sound like. Not anymore.
She smiled a little as Faris mentioned Lenna. Again, the girl sounded relatable, only, a better person than Garnet, perhaps. Garnet was a Queen because it was her responsibility, but it wasn't something she had wanted. Not anymore. "When I was adventuring, I lost my mother, I saw my own powers turned against me and used to slaughter innocents, I saw my home nearly destroyed by my own power and some of the worse things any person could have to endure. And yet... somehow, it was also the happiest time of my life," she confessed. "It sounds as if your sister is less selfish than I; she puts her duty first willingly, I do so because I must. I... do not always want to." Although, Garnet had to admit, the appeal of adventuring but without Zidane wasn't really one that existed. And now Zidane was back in her life, now that he was alive again, she had a whole new adventure to look forward to. Life with Zidane was an exciting prospect. She shouldn't be so reluctant to return.
Besides, being Queen with Zidane by her side, seeing him on the back foot for once and her being the experienced one, it might be enjoyable...
"Thank you," she said gratefully when Faris offered his assistance in finding a weapon. "I am not a total stranger to weapons, I have used many on my last travels, only, I did not usually purchase them myself. I have used rods and rackets, and am proficient in both, for a mage," she explained. "My funds are somewhat limited, however. A cheaper weapon would do for now. I do not often engage in physical combat anyway, I rely mostly on my white magic, so a staff is merely a last resort," she went on, waiting to see what Faris would recommend.
