Oh, be still thine own curiosity. At this point, the man ridded whatever remnants of doubt Ardyn held in regards to their claims of royal lineage. But it was their piqued interest in the starscourge’s past, the same sensation that survived through whatever indignation the man’s writhing in that held Ardyn's focus. More and more doth the wheel turn, pushing them both down a path of acknowledgement. It was… foreign to him, to have another stop and wonder why. But alas, the earlier threats and a now vacant canteen had unfortunately soured those chances… for now, at least.
Giving the wit and sass a moment of reprieve, the man in black would respond to the insistence with a modicum of plainness. “Had the circumstances been more favourable, I would indulge your quaint curiosity, but I’m afraid the time and place, as it stands, isn’t. Due to your earlier— shall we say… eagerness, I’ve no doubt the authorities have been informed of my now troublesome presence.” A grim truth to an otherwise light retort. While they tarry on with their exchange, the militia have more than likely been raised. It’s only a matter of time. Admittedly, Ardyn felt a pang of frustration within himself — he spares no surprise that the Somnus’ bloodline is infected with a rotten sense of self preservation, and yet laments that others fall prey to this madness while the royal lineage remains unblemished. Unlike his relative, however, the starscourge had millennia to learn restraint, but it is a millennia they wished to explore.
Ardyn’s body can walk away from physical wounds as if they were never there, but the mental wound of his indignation shall remain forever touched by the sting of betrayal, never knowing a moment’s reprieve.
“And regaling you behind bars would rob such a tale of its gravitas. Henceforth, I will leave this city and head west— see what lies beyond these treacherous sands.” With his intentions addressed, Ardyn was quick to stow any concerns, albeit with a sly smirk. “Don’t fret, we will have that discussion in due time. But until then, I recommend deep breaths the next time you find yourself in the clutches of agitation.” Alas, the jesting jab reared itself as Ardyn would lift his hat in an offering of courtesy. From there, he adjusts it back upon thine scarlet crown before making his way to the entrance that doubled as its exit. Before he left, however, his gait was mired, as if he had forgotten something.
Turning naught but his head, the man stated, “I never caught your name.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius had almost forgotten his previous stunt, until Ardyn pointed it out. It had been a mistake in the current context, but Caius didn’t regret making it. He couldn’t have known that a compromise was even remotely possible at the time. He had done what he had to do, in the context of the moment. “Whoops,” Caius cheeked with a teasingly teeth-gritting wincing expression and a shrug. “Well, you had a kingdom you wanted to protect once. Guess it runs in the family.”
It was short and sweet, but it conveyed much. He couldn’t go back to Lucis, so this world would have to do. He would protect this world by whatever means he needed to, even if his methods could be… Reckless. And deep down inside of Ardyn, was a man who knew exactly what Caius had been thinking. A man who had once given his own body, taking in the blight for his people. While it didn’t work out in gathering the information he sought and sating his curiosity, at least nobody had gotten hurt. Though he would likely stick around Aljana a bit longer to make sure Ardyn kept his word. He still had business here, after all.
“Keep west, a bit to the south, to escape the desert. Should be an oasis to refill your canteen if you follow the signs along that way,” Caius advised. Sure, Ardyn would probably survive without it. But he just… Couldn’t be as spiteful as he wanted to be. Curse his heart. “I have business here, but I’ll find you eventually. We can pick this up then.”
Caius had no interest in dealing with the authorities right now, either. He’d probably be questioned if he stuck around, and while he wanted to ensure their safety – he didn’t want to stay longer than necessary either. He had his own people to get back to, and this heat was more suffocating than having to deal with his continuously passive aggressive ancestor. One who reminded him to take a deep breath if he ever got angry again.
“If I ever get angry enough to raze a world, I’ll keep that in mind” Caius retorted with what was almost a grin, amused at the idea that the literal destroyer of his entire home kingdom and world in what was ultimate a revenge-fueled temper tantrum, would suggest he work on his temper. Ardyn had earned at least one barb right back at him. So with that, Caius summoned a weapon, and chose his point of exit as Ardyn walked away. Though Ardyn then asked his name…
What name did he use? A question posed as he thought back on his conversation with Noctis. He was a Dragelion, yet also a Lucis Caelum. But he had made a promise to himself, too. He had to earn that worthiness to be either one…
Thus a single word would end it all, cast to the winds isolated and alone. Spoken with a cheeky salute, as the blue glow began to envelop him, and he would disappear…

Truly, the boy needed to polish his sardonic wit, as well as its accuracy for that matter. Had it been otherwise, it might have gotten a rise out of Ardyn— not a transgressive rise, but one nonetheless. Where they fell short was thinking their woes, or existence for that matter, was enough to garner more than the mere passivity they had gotten thus far. It didn’t. That would imply that theirs was a heft comparable to Somnus or the gods. It wasn’t. Needless to say, beyond the curiosities of this world and intrigue of otherworldly interlopers, the starscourge cared little for matters of Eos. In time, he will. For now, however, he is emboldened by a newfound freedom, and Ardyn would rather bask in it, regardless if that freedom was on borrowed time or not.
“Caius.” Ardyn repeated, his tone tinged with the vaguest form of interest. It’s a name that melds well with the Caelum title. A pittance of wonder upon the descendent’s malaise, though nothing more and nothing less beyond that. As Ardyn had mentioned, the woes of his former lineage held neither sway nor interest to him — knowing they continued their sordid ways only stands as a monumental reminder of how far they fell. But somewhere, beyond the abyss of darkness and rage laid a thought… if his ascension went as intended, perhaps things would have gone differently.
That light had long been extinguished, trickled out like fractured glass. Only darkness seeps through now.
In the span of redirecting his head forward and gesturing with the smallest wave one could offer, Ardyn stated, “Well then, Caius. In the morrow before our next exchange, do stay out of trouble.” With a jovial tone, Ardyn, the anathema of Eos left, vacating the cantina with the sun beating down on his blackened garbs before leaving Aljana not long after. Rather than crossing the seas of sand, the chancellor kept to the semblance of paths used to safely traverse to the arid city, welcoming the inquisitive gaze of passersby as they would undoubtedly ponder his sanity for that choice of attire in these harsh lands. But Ardyn was too preoccupied with the myriad thoughts frolicking in his mind.
One train of thought was in regards to the means of coming to this new world. Judging by what Caius prattled on, he came before the advent of the true king, before Ardyn’s demise. While the proverbial gardener to whom plucks these souls would assuredly remain elusive, the starscourge at least discerned that the laws of time are but a trifle before their power. But it wasn’t this omnipotent force that kept his attention, it was the idle thought— a quaint itch he wanted to scratch; what are the odds that Noctis should be here, in this world… will it be the same man who wanted Ardyn to rest forevermore? Or the coddled fledgling that forsook their duty for mere joyrides?
