Oren didn't like the Metaia Marshlands. Not one bit. The stench of death in the air was almost suffocating and it proved difficult to navigate even for him... And that stench wasn't just left at that. This place apparently had genuine undead like out of some creepy movie shambling about and causing problems. It was hard to believe it was apparently part of the main trade routes used in Zephon... He admittedly could give some props to the natives here for the will it required to trudge through this again and again. Oren could grumble to himself all he wanted, but a job was a job and he wasn't exactly picky about the ones that required dealing with monsters. It was one of his main claims to fame since arriving in Zephon and even part of how he got accepted into SOLDIER back home. Killing things was one of the only things he was truly good at nowadays... He was very aware of how morbid that was.[break][break]
Oren winced a bit thinking about the past. His vision and thoughts seemed to blur and even appear a bit green(?), but he snapped back to reality after a moment and shook his head. His upbringing was a painful one and even thinking about the somewhat more positive memories from that time just... No. It was all behind him now. Zephon itself may well join his home there one day. It didn't matter... None of it did...[break][break]
Oren managed to find himself something good so that field trip to Provo to look for more work was getting postponed for now. Today's mission was a simple monster bounty. A big one too... A Malboro. Oren was actually surprised to see that name because those... THINGS existed in his world too. Now that he thought about it, a lot of the monsters here were ones he recognized from his home world... So, there were other rules that appeared to be consistent beyond just the name of the primary currency used. The more time passed, the more confusing EVERYTHING truly felt to Oren. Convenient as it all was. Alas, dwelling upon it further would be pointless...[break][break]
Oren trudged deeper through the swamps and he started closing in on where the Malboro was last reported to be hiding at. It was a bit off the beaten trail... Or the closest thing to one here. Presuming it was the exact same as the ones from his reality, these things can spew some pretty nasty filth from their mouths and weren't particularly weak to any form of elemental damage, but they weren't super resistant to his preferred fire and ice magic... Oren reached for his back and pulled out Lunaris from its sheath, its slotted materia glimmering against the fog. Oren would lean against a decrepit tree and hold Lunaris in front of him, gazing at the faint reflection of his face in the materia... He just needed to finalize his plan now. If he could sneak up on it, he could start with some fire or ice, then jump in for the actual assault. He was more than fast enough to avoid getting blasted by its breath even in this less than ideal environment... He could pull off some impressive jumps too if the terrain proved troublesome...[break][break]
Oren's thoughts just continued processing. He was still aware of his surroundings so he knew he was in safe spot for now. Alas, plans were going to need some changing as it would soon become apparent he wasn't the only living soul out here...

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius was terrified of this place.
This place, he had been a few times, when it had been a place of healing. He had recovered from his injuries against the dragon here, after dragging Vordun’s egg here while barely alive. And then the next time he saw it? It was crawling with undead. It had turned into a horrific swamp full of the things seemingly overnight. He had come here once, to defeat the Lich in what was one of the most harrowing things in his life to experience. He had hoped that by defeating the Lich, the flow of undead would stop.
But they didn’t. He didn’t know why, but they didn’t. He had been loath to come here since. But he also knew that he owed it to the natives to one day find the source of the undead and bring it to an end… And until then, keep them safe from the beasts here, to protect them, to save them… As he had failed to do before. So it was that after his visit to see how Noctis and his retinue were doing, Caius had taken an airship back to Torensten to continue working with Celes in restoring some semblance of order. Caius’ heart was heavy. What he had learned in Provo…
He couldn’t understand it. It hurt him, pained him down to his very soul. But for now, he knew he needed to push it down. All of that hurt, all of that pain? Was nothing compared to what would happen to Zephon’s people if he wasn’t on his game.
So here he was. Back to work. A bounty had been posted, he had taken it, even if he didn’t exactly like being here. He had been told another mercenary had taken it as well, so Caius figured he would find them eventually. The target was a marlboro… A horrific and dangerous creature. One that Caius had only encountered once. That, in of itself, was another painful memory. This one needed to be dealt with, and fast. Still, as Caius and his companion trudged through the swamps, following a very strong scent that Caius was quite familiar with…
… Perhaps Oren would be surprised at the sight of a man with a dragon at his side, coming his way.
Oren's eyes widened. Something was coming... Or... Someone? Oren turned towards the source of the noise. Perhaps it would be some modicum of relief that it wasn't a monster trying to get the jump on him, but rather a man and a... What were they called again? Dragons? Drakes? He's heard varying terms like that used. Oren was pretty sure creatures akin to them existed back home, though they were just mindless monsters. Seeing one as a docile companion was... Intriguing. Why was that man even here, though? He didn't look like a...
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Who's th-"
Oren began to speak up before pausing. Wait... Gigantic blonde man accompanied by a dragon... Dragonblade. That big shot mercenary organization. If he remembered correctly, this was their co-founder... The one they literally built a statue of. Damn it all. Oren should've known SOMEONE else was going to take on the bounty. Especially the big hero type.[break][break]
Oren sighed and would lightly lower his hat for a moment before raising it back to normal. It would be futile to just go about his business and pretend he didn't notice the big shot approaching. Not like he didn't have experience working with a celebrity... Much as he would rather handle it on his own, it was going to be easier making sure they were on the same page since he was already here. Oren would raise a hand to signal towards Caius. When the duo approached Oren, he would then speak up again.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Caius Dragelion, I presume...? I'd wager a guess you're here for the same reason I am. Be careful with your movements from here on out. Our little issue is close by..."
Oren kept his voice a little lower. Oren made no immediate introduction of his own as it didn't really matter in his mind, but he would provide his name if requested. Upon getting a closer look at Oren, it would be hard to miss a distinct, eerie green glow that his eyes let off... Mako eyes.[break][break]
Oren would glance out from behind the tree he had been leaning against. Indeed, in the distance, the makeshift group could make out the sight of that sordid scent... The Malboro. Big, green, ugly, and smelly. Just wriggling about at the moment like the disgusting mass that it was.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Imagine you've at least heard of a Malboro, if not fought one before. Seem they exist in most worlds in this freaky web of realities we all got thrown into Zephon from..."
Oren paused and shook his head. Now was not the time for that.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Mmh. If you have dealt with one, it'd be good to know what worked for you. We can work on a strategy from there..."
Yep. He was all business. While he was keeping a professional front, there was that part of him that did feel some elation at an actual challenge.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius’ stride grew faster as he noted the figure ahead, and sought to meet them. Either they were the other mercenary he had been told about when taking the job, or someone here was up to no good. Then the man signalled to Caius, and Caius quirked a brow in kind as he would approach. Vordun shot him a look, as if inquiring to whether it should eat him. But Caius raised a hand to stay the dragon’s ire. When he approached, the redhead in the hat spoke first. So, this was the selfsame mercenary, then. Seems Caius had some competition… Perhaps they could split the reward, then? Caius wasn’t really a stickler about the reward, he just wanted the malboro dealt with.
“Aye, that would be me. This is Vordun” Caius then introduced the dragon beside him. Vordun sniffed at Oren, but otherwise didn’t seem to be planning further to harm him. “And you are? Your garb reminds me of what some of the hunters wore back home” Caius mused aloud as he looked Oren up and down. Specifically, the female hunters. But the boy looked like a boy, right? Well, he supposed it wouldn’t be the first time Caius had gotten that one wrong. Maybe the mercenary was a born male who did the… What did Faris call it? Ah, it didn’t matter.
Though those eyes unnerved him. Where had he seen them before? Definitely not on anyone from Eos, that’s for sure. However, they had a bigger problem at hand. The malboro was near. Caius shuddered as he remembered his last encounter with one. It was not an experience he wanted to repeat, but… That was just part of the gig.
“If you have magic, use it when it opens its mouth to shoot its breath attack at you. Then get out of the way. If it gets you with its breath, you’re screwed.”
Oren felt a bit of relief that the big famous merc seemed willing to play along with working together. Oren didn't really like to split rewards as he needed to continue building up his savings in this damned world, but they were all here already and trying to tell Caius to go away probably wouldn't work and come across as more rude than he would mean to... Not that he really cared much about how he came across to most others, but he had to keep up a little professionalism here and maintain a reliable reputation. The dragon seemed pretty apprehensive about him, but would ease up a little after they approached. Perhaps they could make an impromptu game out of this hunt... Oh, that might be fun.[break][break]
Oren just curtly nodded. Of course he should've expected he had to introduce himself.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Is that right...? I suppose you could call me a hunter, though I presume you refer to something more specific rather than generally... My name is Oren. Just another mercenary stolen from his home by the whims of something cruel... Now I'm just killing time."
It was perhaps obvious there was more to him than he would let on, but Oren didn't feel particularly compelled to say much more beyond that... And he was perhaps lucky Caius didn't actually say that his outfit resembled a more feminine one for these hunters. He wouldn't be sure how to react to a world where his outfit wasn't considered unisex at the very least.[break][break]
Oren would then raise an index finger when Caius offered his insight.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"So, you've dealt with one before then... Good. This should be pretty easy if we get it right where we want it. We should get a move on then, Mister Leader Man... Don't like this place very much."
It seemed Caius most definitely didn't either. However, when Oren went to look back towards where the Malboro had been hanging around in the distance... It was gone?
[attr="class","dialogue"]"... Huh? Where did it-"
Oren paused and suddenly a horrified look broke past the stoic exterior.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"SHIT! WE HAVE TO MOVE! NOW!"
Oren suddenly shouted. The swampy floor near where the group stood began to bubble and shake. Oren would start running and leap for a branch of one of the warped trees a short distance away and flip onto the top of the branch before. It was a rather baffling display of physical prowess despite the ground not exactly being fit for such actions. Caius would have a moment to move himself before the Malboro suddenly erupted from the marshes with a loud screech.[break][break]
It looks like this hunt would be starting a little more on the back end than Oren intended...

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius didn't really care much about splitting the reward, considering what he was here for. This was about ensuring Metaia's safety and that of Zephon as a whole, rather than any need for money. A malboro was a threat, and he was here to deal with it -- simple as that. Still, he kept his decorum professional as a mercenary should. "It's good to meet you, Oren" he greeted then. "Suppose the Dragonblades are always looking for mercenaries with skill, and tend to be a place for combatants from other worlds to find work -- if you can handle the expectations" Caius offered, with a bit of cheek to the end of it. It was well known at this point what Torensten and those in the surrounding areas especially expected of the Dragonblades now. They were sellswords, and yet at the same time, seen as peacekeepers when the city guard just wasn't enough. It was an identity that Caius had embraced, and not one he hid from would-be members.
Then Vordun began to growl. That tipped Caius off immediately something was wrong -- Oren had given Vordun no reason to act, which likely meant that they were in danger. Vordun's starting to growl at the ground told him what he needed to know around the same time Oren realized where the Malboro was, and Caius quickly climbed aboard Vordun. While Oren went for an impressive acrobatic measure instead, Vordun would fly up to dodge the Malboro's initial attack.
"There goes the element of surprise," Caius remarked with a barely-phased shrug. It wasn't worth getting hung up about, it just meant this would be a little bit harder. "Vordun, draw its attention" he ordered to the dragon, who unleashed a fiery breath upon the malboro before taking off away from it at Caius' urging. Why? Because that left it open for Oren to get in and attack.
Oren merely nodded in regards to the 'nice meeting'. He then just glanced away without giving a real answer regarding the Dragonblades. Of course, the recruitment drive was already starting... There wouldn't be any point to his presence with that group... At least, he liked to tell himself that. He tried to keep people at a distance for... Numerous reasons. He didn't want to hurt others... He didn't want to experience loss... Not again... Of course, he didn't exactly have time to say anything even if he wanted to considering the fact that the target Malboro suddenly sprung out from below. This damnable location truly was giving Oren more and more reasons to dislike it. Oren was initially disturbed, but him and Caius had managed to avoid the surprise attack without much issue. He was honestly a bit more concerned about Caius rather than himself considering he wasn't sure what the Big Merc Leader and Vodrun were capable of. This was nothing for him... Any lingering fears Oren might've felt quickly gave way to something a little more familiar to him...[break][break]
Excitement...[break][break]
Oren's eyes widened a bit.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Interesting... Well. Let's dance then for old time's sake..."
Oren slowly stood up on the branch. Caius had ordered his draconic buddy to breathe fire at the Malboro and move away, which did its job of catching the monster's attention. The Malboro turned away and started wriggling about in their direction. Oren just stared at it as he moved to sheathe Lunaris on his back for the moment. Oren took a deep breath as a pain started to spread through his head again. Oren gritted his teeth. The only way to quell it... The only way...[break][break]
Time to hunt.[break][break]
Oren's face contorted into a deranged looking grin as he lept off of the branch towards the Malboro, landing right behind it. Oren immediately reached out and grabbed onto one of those gross tentacles. One of its 'eyes' looked back towards Oren. The monster appeared to realize it had been tricked as it tried to turn its attention towards Oren... But not before Oren tightened his grip on the tentacles with both of his hands and then... More. Oren started chuckling ominously. He slowly started dragging the Malboro back before he, even more bafflingly, managed to ever so slightly lift the cretin up and throw it a pretty fair distance into a greater mass of trees. Considering the size of the Malboro, the rather dead looking trees would collapse beneath the weight of the creature. Oren then quickly reached back for Lunaris and unsheathed it. One of the glowing green orbs embedded in the blade let off a brighter glow for a moment.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Heheh... Stay put!"
Oren would cast Gravity with a wave of his free hand, a small dark void forming in the general area around the Malboro. It was unfortunately pretty low level magic, but the increased pressure in the monster's vicinity and the crushed trees it was a bit tangled up in would keep it for a moment. It wouldn't be long bfore the Malboro wriggled around some more, already appearing to escape the Gravity spell... And then... It started to breathe in and open its mouth.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Heh... NOW! KILL IT!"
It was likely rather morbid that Oren sounded disturbingly gleeful now considering how calm and collected he had been moments ago. Could they best this thing in a single hit...? Or would this require strategy even for...? Oren shook his head, trying to drown out that voice that echoed out in his thoughts. None of that mattered anymore... None of them did...[break][break]
Caius and Voldrun were given the desired opening the group were looking for. Oren needed a second before he could throw out another spell, but he was already dashing for the Malboro, likely preparing to leap into the air again to use that spell to hit it where it hurt most alongside the dynamic duo. This hunt was already over... How disappointing.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Hm, no interest there. Well, you couldn’t recruit ‘em all, at least not on the first try. Perhaps an opportunity would come up, given due time. Caius was more taken aback by the fact that the mercenary before him had actually managed to grab the creature by its tentacles and throw it a distance. Considering the sheer heaping size of the thing… Well, that wasn’t something Caius had considered possible to most. Caius had never tested the limits of the superhuman strength that becoming a kingsglaive had granted him, but this man’s staggering abilities made him curious…
But for now, they had a job to focus on. Even if on the surface, Oren probably didn’t need him if he could do that. But his moves were too aggressive, too forward and open. Like he was laser focused on mutilating the thing. The shouts that came with his moves backed this up, and Caius was starting to wonder if the man was even mentally sound. No, he supposed the man probably needed Caius after all. One whiff of Bad Breath and it was over for Oren. Fighting a malboro alone was suicide. The fact Oren had come without backup said much to begin with, and his fighting style said more.
It was for the best that he got involved, and ended this quickly.
Caius directed Vordun to fly over the malboro as Caius began preparing a spell. Once the creature’s mouth was open, Caius instructed Vordun to use his fire breath, while Caius launched a Fira.
Unfortunately, the creature wasn’t done yet, suddenly launching Bad Breath towards the duo. The poison miasma made contact with the flames and exploded in mid-air, blowing their chance to exploit its weak spot. Seeming to have sensed that its life was in danger, the Malboro loosed a bloodcurdling roar before its mouth shut. It would move its tendrils to the left, then the right, and…
“Oren, get back!” Caius called out as he tapped a few times on Vordun’s back. A silent instruction for the dragon to retreat, as the Malboro would launch poisonous spores on all sides across the battlefield.

That somewhat more logical sounding, yet morose thought echoed out in Oren's mind as he lost himself to the thrill of battle. A monster hunting down another monster for some gil. Rinse and repeat. While he did usually try to plan out strategies, a lot of the time they often weren't needed due to the sheer brute force Oren had at his disposal. However, it seemed his abilities weren't enough... Granted, a small part of his strategy was using the unexpected arrival of Caius and his curious companion to help finish off the creature... While he still could somewhat think, but the planet's darkness once more desired to submerge him... The plan almost worked, but the damned cretin managed to spew its Bad Breath before Caius's magic could leave it ready to kill.[break][break]
Oren clicked his teeth as he had continued running towards the Malboro, the murky swamp beneath him looking akin to solid ground at this point. Oren would need to goad it into another opening and then he could try his own firepower on it... Yes... This was truly getting interesting. He actually felt a bit of... Excitement.[break][break]
Something's off...[break][break]
Indeed, the Malboro had started swinging its tendrils around instead. Where had he seen that...? Almost right as Oren realized what was happening, Caius had called out to him to make a tactical retreat. The still somewhat crazed Oren pouted.
[attr="class","dialogue"]"Oh, that's just no fun. No fun at all...!"
Even though it was a sign that it saw them as the superior threat, it was still incredibly annoying. Alas, when he saw the spores start shooting out all over the designated battlefield, Oren would stop in his tracks and turn to start running away from the spores to make some distance. Oh, he was going to rip that damned thing apart when they got their opening to strike...[break][break]
For now, they either just had to bide their time or find a way to deal with these spores so they can put the pressure back on it. What to do, what to do...?
