[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that he’d take the Angeal comparison as a compliment since he’d seemed nice, and Genesis responded without really thinking at first. “He is, but that’s hardly the point.” Then the man’s words actually sunk in, and the volatile red-head immediately rounded on him. “Excuse you? And how exactly do you know Angeal?” The dark-haired man had been on Zephon for quite a while before they’d found each other, so it wasn’t out of the question that he’d met Caius before. Genesis certainly wouldn’t know—things had been rather awkward between the two of them considering Angeal’s suicide via attacking Zack.
The blond man also seemed a little struck by his admission that he wasn’t very good at being good. Which may have been an understatement all things considered, but oh well. Genesis glanced over at Caius when he mused that it was hard to act on behaviors that weren’t often extended to you personally. The ex-SOLDIER had a hard time poking fun at that one, so he responded a little more seriously for a change. “Well, Angeal managed, so I’m afraid I have little excuse.” They’d had a similar upbringing after all, outside of the amount of money their families had.
His somber mood didn’t last for very long though, because he couldn’t sit there and listen to Caius worry about whether or not he should have killed someone any longer. “I’m sorry, you’re having second thoughts over decapitating a slaver? Please. Stop pretending you’re not a hero before I slap you.” He really had the gall to be out here acting like he’d done something wrong for killing one of the villains of his story. “Not everyone can be redeemed you know.” Even Zack had sent him to the lifestream. It was only by the grace of the goddess that he was sitting here now. Or floating here now, as it were. They were in fact still parasailing.
Caius also clarified his stance on Sonora a bit. Evidently his family had been imprisoned once, so while he wanted nothing more than to help everyone trapped in that same situation, he felt he needed to do it the right way. Genesis pursed his lips a bit and glanced to the side. “I didn’t ask for your life story,” he muttered, but it lacked his usual venom. It was more him being petty than anything. “But the thing about power is that everyone loses it eventually. Sonora’s fall is as inevitable as Shinra’s. We just may not be around to see it.” As irritating as it was that Shinra was forever out of reach to him now.
Caius briefly mentioned what had happened to him before coming here, which made Genesis quirk an eyebrow. “Ah, you’re one of the dead ones.” He wasn’t shocked or anything given that his two best friends had both seemingly risen from the dead as well. “There is no hate, only joy, for you are beloved by the goddess. Hero of the dawn, Healer of worlds.” A worthy Loveless quote for the occasion, if he did say so himself. “I suppose the goddess has plans for you yet.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius had almost relaxed when Genesis had rounded on him again. He really needed to stop doing that. At least this time Caius was a touch calmer, just opening an eye and moving his head slightly to look at Genesis. “We met on a job in Aljana. Carried himself like a gentleman. Growing a wing and flying away at the end was a little… Different, but I’ve seen worse” Caius answered casually. He didn’t put emphasis on the wing being weird because, well. Obviously he shouldn’t do that. And he wasn’t lying either, a man growing an angel wing out of nowhere was far from the strangest thing he had seen just on Zephon alone. He’d made friends with tonberries, this was nothing. “Been meaning to talk to him about a job offer. Though with his friend working for the Stones, I might be out of luck” he added with a small chuckle. Caius left out the part about watching Angeal take part in leveling Provo’s square, and their conversation that had followed. He needed to find out a little bit more about Angeal before he extended that job offer, he supposed.
Genesis predictably had no sympathy for the slaver. Granted, Caius didn’t either. Caius had no issue with the fact he had killed them. It was how it had happened that haunted him. He barely held in a cold laugh when Genesis said not everyone could be redeemed. “Don’t I know it” Caius spoke with a quiet scoff, but his expression grew distant as he found himself staring out at the horizon again. Lost in those horrible memories. “I shot through the chest to stop them. Then tried to end it quick. But I was so angry it translated into my just running my sword through their head. Downward slash, from the top, far from clean,” came flatly, almost in a whisper. His voice in recounting was almost… Detached. Like he was trying to separate from the feelings of the moment. But it was only a dream, for there was no escaping it. And even Caius was well aware of that, because some feeling returned to the follow-up. Which made sense, considering it brought out his old regrets. “They deserved to die. And the world is better off with them dead. But I should have been in control — and my friend didn’t deserve to watch that. I lost control, and I have to live with that. I need to be better, or the next time could be more than just a messy corpse.”
That was his true worry. That he lacked discipline as a warrior, lacking control when under that kind of pressure – that made him dangerous. Not just to his enemies, but to those who shouldn’t have been in any danger at all. So Caius took a deep breath and tried to reset himself back to zero. He was supposed to be on vacation, apparently, but here he was reliving old traumas. In his quiet however, he caught the mutter. “I didn’t give you it. That would take all day” was retorted quietly. Was that sarcasm, or blunted matter-of-fact? It would likely be hard to tell, considering the straight face that came with it. It was rationalized that Sonora would fall, eventually – something that got a quiet nod from Caius. Not soon enough, in his view.
One of the dead ones, well that was… One way of putting it. “Apparently,” Caius remarked in kind, his gaze still far and away. Though after how many times Genesis had railed on him by now, his guard wasn’t going down again. “My world had an old legend about a goddess of death, Etro. I don’t remember a lot about it, but if she brought me here, I’d like to know why.”

[attr=class, bulk] Everything that Caius outlined from his meeting with Angeal certainly sounded like his best friend. “Ugh, that’s definitely him. He’s too much of a gentleman for his own good if you ask me. And of course he’s the one who ended up with the white wing.” Genesis shook his own black one for emphasis even though it really wasn’t needed. Caius had eyes.
The blond man had apparently also been considering offering Angeal a job, which made Genesis chuckle. Of course his best friend made a good impression with this world’s heroes too. “Well maybe you’re in luck if you’ve been looking for him. Seeing as I live with him and all.” A recent development, and Genesis had been avoiding their apartment like the plague, so that was more of a technicality than anything else at this point. “And I doubt he’d care if you have some kind of rivalry with Sephiroth’s employer. Just don’t tell them to fight each other. Sephiroth would win.” He was always begrudging to admit that Sephiroth was the strongest of the three of them, but it was a little easier when he didn’t have to put himself in the equation at all.
Caius shared a little more about why he was feeling guilty over killing the slaver, and Genesis tilted his head at the revelation that the beheading hadn’t quite been as clean as it had initially sounded. “Oh, that is extra. Good for you though. We’ve all been there,” he said, seemingly unaware that none of that would be as comforting as he meant it. “I’d say losing control of your emotions is human, wouldn’t you? Maybe the only human part left of me.” Shinra had certainly done their best to turn them into monsters. Maybe that had only failed with Angeal when it came down to it.
The blond man replied equally sarcastically that he hadn’t given him his life story—the full version would take all day. Genesis actually laughed at that, since it was the kind of dry joke that was right up his alley. “Well don’t try it, or I swear I’ll pop the sail,” he threatened lightly. It was mostly a joke, but that would be a little funny. Caius wouldn’t be hurt or anything, but he would get rather wet. Genesis himself could probably fly away before they crash landed in the ocean.
Caius confirmed that he had died before coming here, and to the SOLDIER’s delight, he seemed to actually be a little thoughtful about Genesis’ comment that the goddess had spared him. Apparently there was a goddess of death worshiped back in his own world. “Oh, now that’s interesting. Does she guide your souls to the beyond? If so, then maybe she really does have plans for you.” The goddess Minerva had prevented him from entering the lifestream after all and returned him to his body after Zack had struck him down. To be honest he wasn’t entirely sure why, given that he had just woken up on Zephon once Zack had left him behind, but perhaps she had something in mind for him here as well.
“When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end, the goddess descends from the sky. Wings of light and dark spread afar. She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting.” He was more musing aloud than anything else, but he thought the prologue to Loveless was rather appropriate right now.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius chuckled a bit as Genesis openly bemoaned Angeal being a gentleman, and that he got the white wing out of them. Genesis then brought up that as he lived with Angeal, he might still be on the market for a job offer. And doubted that it would be a problem with the Stones and Sephiroth. A louder cackle accompanied the “Sephiroth would win”. “It’s honestly refreshing to hear how close you all are” Caius admitted quietly. “I… Was lost – when I first came here. I had nobody, and had very little before that. The people I met and became close with helped me stabilize a great deal. They were instrumental to getting through this, and finding my way in a new world. It’s… Easier, when you have something – someone – to anchor you to this world.”
Right, if Genesis was going to liaison between him and Angeal, Caius supposed he should actually explain what the job was. That was probably important. “Right. I’m the leader of a mercenary guild in Torensten. We double as a peacekeeping force – the average militia in Zephon isn’t well-equipped to handle the beasts and criminals that have been popping up since the rifts that brought newcomers here started appearing. Having a group of capable “outlanders” that can handle it is the best thing for ensuring our peaceful “second chance” stays that way. Good advertising, too. People prefer to hire what they’ve already seen in action and know they’re qualified, especially if you want to tout yourself as experts in the field,” Caius explained in short. Everytime he explained the role of the Dragonblades, his explanation got just a bit shorter as he better memorized what was the most efficient way to do it.
His new sailing buddy claimed that what he did was just him being human. Caius half-nodded in some semblance of agreement, at least. “It is. But I’d still like to ensure losing control is saved for stubbing my toe on the bathroom sink – instead of mutilating someone in front of a young woman” Caius amended quietly, in short fashion.
At least Genesis kept things in good humor, sort of. Genesis joked, hopefully, that he would pop the sail if he told his story. So he wouldn’t. “I doubt it would be that interesting to you, anyway. You have an actual angel’s wing, that’s more interesting than my story,” Caius remarked between chuckles, as blunt as could be. Maybe if this thread had taken place a little later in the timeline, Caius’ story would be a little bit juicier. But that was neither here nor there. Caius knew the merits of a good story, and whatever story he could tell about his past right now would likely pale in comparison to however Genesis got that wing. “I get the impression the wing carries some unpleasant memories, so I won’t ask for more details unless you want to tell. I think it looks really cool, though. It would be convenient to be able to fly on my own.”
Genesis actually seemed interested in the goddess story. He supposed considering his own obsession with a goddess from his play earlier… Or was it an actual goddess? He wasn’t quite sure. Either way, he liked goddesses – clearly. “I believe so. She’s a bit of a distant legend compared to the pantheon Eos worships, but if I recall correctly… Etro is said to reside in the world where the souls of the dead find their rest. When I first came here, part of me wondered if that was where I had been taken. But there isn’t much about what that world is actually like. Either Zephon is the world where she resides, or perhaps I’ve been sent here as a sort of test. To see if my soul is worthy of crossing over.”
Caius looked down at his hands. “Would be nice if I knew what to do, though. I’ve been winging it for years.”

[attr=class,lyric1]infinite in mystery is the gift of
[attr=class,lyric2]the goddess
[attr=class, bulk] Caius said it was refreshing to hear how the three of them had found each other here, before admitting that he hadn’t had anyone from his world here on Zephon for a while. That did sound rather lonely actually. Even outside of his two best friends, Genesis had run into Zack twice now. It turned out that his company wasn’t the worst in small doses. “I guess I’m lucky to have them here, but don’t repeat that. I have a reputation to uphold,” he said, being a little dramatic on purpose as he looked away and flipped his hair. He could already see Angeal’s knowing smile and Sephiroth’s faint little smirk if they knew. Infuriating.
Caius outlined exactly what kind of job he was offering Angeal. Apparently he ran a mercenary guild down in Torensten, and Genesis groaned at the description. “Oh, a do-good fighter for hire sounds right up his alley. Just don’t expect him to use his sword unless it’s serious. He has a thing about rust.” He really could be ridiculous about that sword, but Genesis knew why it was important to him, so he didn’t tease him about it too much. Usually. Sometimes his restraint snapped.
Genesis actually laughed when Caius said that he hoped to confine his moments of emotional outburst to stubbing his toe instead of mutilating someone in front of a young woman. “Same difference,” he said with a nonchalant shrug, though his lips twitched a bit to show he knew that was ridiculous. He immediately faltered though when Caius referred to his wing as an angel’s wing. That…wasn’t something that had been levied at him before. At Angeal certainly, but white wings tended to inspire awe in people, while something about the darker color of his own wing seemed to inspire mainly fear. He also said that he didn’t have to talk about it if he didn’t want to, which made the ex-SOLDIER purse his lips. “Shinra science at its finest,” he said a bit dryly. “It would have been nice to know before I sprouted it in the night.” Still, the blond man’s description of his wing as cool-looking unsettled Genesis, who wasn’t used to hearing it. As usual, his confusion reared its head in the form of rage. “Dreams of the morrow hath the shattered soul. Pride is lost, wings stripped away, the end is nigh.”
His simmering continued as Caius explained the goddess Etro to him. How he wasn’t sure if this was where the souls of the dead came to rest or if he was meant to take some sort of test. He looked so down at the prospect of wondering what he was meant to be doing that Genesis finally reached his limit. “Ugh, shut up, you’re obviously worthy! And this isn’t an angel’s wing.” Reaching down he undid the buckles keeping him strapped to the harness, and the effect was fairly immediate. The wind caught in his outstretched wing and wrenched him backwards out of the harness until he was falling towards the ocean. He managed to catch himself and hover in place before impact, but judging from the commotion on the boat, he wasn’t supposed to have done that. Come to think of it, hopefully Caius was still strapped in. Those buckles had just been for his own harness, right?

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius laughed, and then laughed again at both the remarks about Genesis’ reputation, and how the Dragonblades would be perfect for a “do-gooder” like Angeal. “The giant sword? I noticed he doesn’t use it” Caius inquired, still curious about the nature of Angeal’s strange weapon choices. So it was about rust? Interesting. “I know some good weapon polishing techniques that can reduce the wear, I had far too much time on my hands and needed to make the most of very poor weapons under… Well, very strenuous circumstances, to say the least.”
He didn’t really agree that turning someone’s skull into a watermelon, and a toe stub rager were all that similar, so Caius didn’t quite have a response to that one. But it seemed his interest in the wing did pay off in the form of Genesis actually being eager enough to describe how it had been made. “Shinra science” didn’t seem like a good thing though, considering their previous conversation about the organization. In fact, considering the bits about human experimentation… Well, when that little thing popped back into Caius’ mind, he openly winced. Eugh, he didn’t want to think about what had gone into creating that wing. “Sounds… Painful” came his best attempt at empathy for what Genesis might have gone through.
However, any talk of Etro was interrupted when Genesis suddenly had enough and went off at him about worthiness. “Thanks… I think?” Caius responded to what he was pretty sure was supposed to be flattery. Oh, and apparently that wasn’t an angel wing. “I still think it’s cool,” Caius then muttered, just loud enough for Genesis to probably pick up. But he had barely gotten that out of his mouth before Genesis had undid the buckle. Apparently the end really was nigh.
“Hey, watch your wing-”
Maybe “stop” might have been a more apt choice of words, but Caius wasn’t foolish enough to think he could talk Genesis into putting his buckle back on with him moving around like that. Fortunately, Genesis didn’t get his wing caught on the glider as he went into freefall. Sorry, did I say his buckle? Nope, it was for the both of them. Caius realized this pretty quickly when the flap of Genesis’ wings after being wrenched back kicked up a strong enough wind to kick the harness around and cause Caius to fall out as well, with the harness caught around his legs and restricting his movement.
“Oh shi-” slipped out as the kingsglaive did the first thing his instincts told him. Which was to summon his gunblade, summon a change in ammo and fire a flare into the sky. It quickly exploded in a blast of energy, but Caius wasn’t too trusting about whether that would save him as he hurtled towards the ocean. “Would be real nice to have His Majesty’s armiger right about now” Caius talked himself through his nerves as he prepared his Plan B. The closer he got to the ocean and the issues that came of falling from that height, the more likely they were too far from the mainland. Caius could faintly pick up screaming from the direction of the boat, muffled by the wind whistling in his freefall. Caius took a deep breath to calm himself as he held out an arm to prepare a weapon. The glaive began scanning the landscape – and then the ship – for the right point to…
Something large suddenly shot past Genesis at breakneck speeds and caught Caius in its talons mere inches from the water’s surface. The creature slowed down after grabbing Caius, revealing a big blue dragon.
“I think that’s a record,” Caius breathed out, trying to catch said breath now that he was no longer free-falling. “Thanks Vordun” came next as Caius clambered onto the scaly creature’s back, reaching down to scratch behind their ears. “You don’t have a saddle, so fly slow okay?”

[attr=class,lyric1]infinite in mystery is the gift of
[attr=class,lyric2]the goddess
[attr=class, bulk] Caius mentioned that he knew some good polishing techniques to reduce the wear and tear that weapons took. Genesis would need to direct Angeal his way just for that honestly. Even if his friend didn’t turn out to be interested in the job offer, Genesis would pay good money just to get him to worry less about that sword of his. Dreams and honor were supposed to be a metaphor, not something you assigned a physical representation to, ugh. Also it would be nice if Angeal felt like he could use his sword outside of emergencies. Even if everything seemed to be an emergency lately.
Caius also expressed that sprouting a wing sounded painful, to which Genesis just uttered a dry laugh. Getting his shoulder split open by Angeal’s broken sword had certainly hurt, but the wing that had grown through the wound had been nothing short of excruciating. He didn’t really desire to relive that night though. Particularly not once Hollander had found him. He’d barely even mentioned it to Angeal or Sephiroth, and certainly not with all the gory details.
The blond man seemed a bit baffled at his sudden outburst, muttering that his wing still looked cool. The compliment made Genesis work even faster on the buckle, and it was only once he was hovering in place over the ocean that he realized his mistake. Caius seemed pretty quick on the uptake at least, shooting some kind of signal flare high into the sky before he went rocketing towards the water. Genesis had no idea who he was trying to signal, considering that no one could possibly help if they were all the way on the island or the boat. Really, the only one close enough who could do anything was Genesis himself, but he was spared from having to act the hero.
An animal rushed by him at such high speed that he was briefly blown off course. A few stray black feathers floated down towards the ocean as he righted himself and glared up at the blue blur that had nearly crashed into him. Surprisingly, it was a dragon of all things, but before Genesis could wonder if he needed to go fetch his materia, Caius was clambering onto the thing’s back. He even praised it for saving him, and the signal flare that he had shot off before falling suddenly made a lot more sense.
“Excuse you!” Genesis yelled down at the pair. “Why do you have a giant lizard?” Perhaps he should have apologized first, but the red-head rarely admitted fault. He wasn’t about to start now.
