[attr=class, bulk] Caius said that he’d rather be the hero of someone else’s story than his own, which made Genesis chuckle as he leaned over on one hand to consider the scenery. “Then you’re absolutely the hero variety.” It sounded like something Zack would say. The other first-class SOLDIER had frequently declared that his goal was to become a hero, but Caius didn’t seem quite that lame at least. Genesis had brought it up first in this case after all.
Still, the blond man did open up a bit about his reasoning for wanting to be a hero to other people, even if he kept the mentions of his past vague. It was still enough to piece together that his king had made quite the impact on his life, which had probably influenced that outlook of his. Genesis didn’t particularly enjoy helping people enough to agree, but it wasn’t the worst argument for wanting to be a hero that he’d ever heard. At least until the word ‘degrade’ made him whip his head around to give the man a furious look.
“Who put you up to this? Zack?” He either knew more about Genesis than he had been letting on, or the red-head was about to slap him upside the head and tell him to never use that word again. “Ugh I suppose it would be rich for me to disagree after how our story ended, but you won’t always find that path rewarding. Humans are notoriously ungrateful.” Scowling, he brushed a stray feather off of his shoulder before squinting up suspiciously at the parasail above them. He still wasn’t sure how he felt about relying on something else to keep him in the air.
Caius shared that he was from some place called Eos, which earned a blank look from Genesis. “Honestly? Never heard of it.” Apparently he’d managed to never run into a single person from that world yet, which was a little funny at this point. Ah well, maybe there weren’t many of them here on Zephon. Moving on to Gaia, the SOLDIER’s expression immediately turned back into a scowl when Caius said that he’d heard of it before, and mostly in regards to Shinra. “Then they’re absolutely not worth hearing about again. I’d hate to overstate their importance.”
Alright, perhaps they were rather important to the history of Gaia, but they also tended to ruin everything they touched, and they were certainly the villain to Genesis’ own story. He only regretted that his rebellion hadn’t done enough to ruin them before his degradation had worsened. And now they were a world away—completely untouchable. It was galling.
“My soul, corrupted by vengeance, hath endured torment to find the end of the journey in my own salvation, and your eternal slumber,” Genesis quoted idly, since he’d often found comfort in that line in regards to him and Shinra.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius couldn’t help a chuckle as Genesis claimed he was, in fact, of the hero variety. That sounded like the closest thing to a compliment that he was going to get, even if Genesis probably didn’t mean it as one in his view, so he would take it. Things seemed to be going smoothly enough, and Caius even started to relax a bit and begin to properly take in the sights before them now that the pyromaniac was seemingly not at threat to burn this whole thing down with them still on it.
Which was his first mistake, as Caius’ head whipped to stare at Genesis when he suddenly became hostile, painfully oblivious to why as Genesis accosted him over his choice of words. His hand had clenched to receive his weapon if needed, out of instinct. As if Genesis’ actions at the manor had been drilled right back into his head the second he made a move that seemed like a threat. Caius’ eyes in that moment, as he stared Genesis dead in the face, were cold. Frozen eyes, laser focused, with an almost emotionless gait that said he had been forced into this scenario far too many times. At least, until they started to settle when Genesis’ actual words began to filter back into his head. When the realization hit him, he blinked a few times in confusion. “Who’s Zack?” got blurted out in those first few seconds as part of him was still recovering from the thought the man might actually attack him over the whole hero thing. “Did I say something wrong?”
Even Caius knew he had, but Genesis’ rant made it unclear what exactly had set him off. He couldn’t think of anything that normally should have? But he had gone on about how “their” story had ended, and that made no sense to him. When Genesis seemed to settle enough that Caius was sure he wouldn’t try to kill him in the next ten seconds, however, his shoulders started to slump back down.
He wouldn’t let his guard down entirely for a bit, though. Not after Genesis had scared him like that. But Genesis seemed to be pacified, at least for the moment, so he took a deep breath as he tried to calm himself down. Genesiis claimed that his road was an ungrateful one, devoid of reward. A small smirk hit his complexion at that one. “Oh, I know. You don’t do what I do for very long before you run into that” Caius admitted softly. It was a shame, but… It came with the territory, and he had long made his peace with that.
Genesis, unsurprisingly, didn’t know Eos. But the mention of Shinra seemed to invoke his ire again. Caius didn’t quite freak out this time, and didn’t visibly go on guard. But he did eye Genesis, unwilling to be struck unawares. “Probably why I haven’t actually heard anything good about them” Caius commented offhand, though the actual phrasing had been planned carefully. He had refrained from verbally taking a side and stating his actual opinions on purpose, at least until now.

[attr=class, bulk] When Genesis rounded on Caius, he was a little taken aback at how immediately the other man looked ready for a fight. Well now that was a fascinating subconscious reaction. He filed that away for later as the blond man seemed to come back to himself before blinking at Genesis in confusion. Caius was either back-tracking heavily or his words really had been innocent, and somehow Genesis doubted that he was a good enough actor to pull off the first.
With a sigh that was almost a huff, Genesis relented with a wave of his hand. “Be more careful with your word choice, or you’ll run into trouble. You’re lucky I’m in a good mood on vacation.” Even if it was accidental, he really didn’t appreciate being reminded of his degradation and how he’d had to rely on Zack at the end. It sounded like Caius aspired to do what Zack had done for him in regards to other people though. A very quiet part of Genesis was a little touched at the idea, but the much louder side of him wanted to ruin the blond man’s day now. Easy enough given what the man had just shown him.
“That was a good look for you though. Very brooding,” the red-haired man flaunted as he leaned back on one hand to consider him. “Killed more than a few people in our time, have we?” If he was anything like Zack then he likely wouldn’t want to be reminded much of that. “Don’t worry, I admire a hero who can live in the grey a little. We all know that some people just deserve to die.” Maybe he was laying it on a bit thick, but he was out to needle the man, damn it. And if it ended in some kind of parachute sword fight, then that was still less stupid than some of the missions Shinra had sent him on.
Caius also admitted that he was more than aware that not everyone would appreciate what he did for them, and Genesis squinted a little at the way he got quiet, like his kindness had been taken advantage of before or something. “Ugh, stop being likable. I hate it,” he complained, before scowling as the topic also turned to Shinra. “Oh really? I suppose you’ve gotten the usual spiel? Child soldiers, human experimentation, killing the planet, blah, blah, ex cetera, ex cetera?” Despite his bored tone, his wing swept outwards a bit in an agitated manner, and the force knocked them slightly off course as the parasail drifted a bit more towards the beach than the boat had likely intended. Oops.
“When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end, the goddess descends from the sky.” Perhaps a bit literally.

Caius Lucis Caelum
Caius had no clue what Genesis was talking about. What exactly in his word choice had set him off? Why had he rounded on him like that? Genesis didn't seem intent on telling him why, and Caius wasn't even sure if he should ask. After a few moments of thought, and after being reminded that he was, in fact, a killer, Caius decided through a teeth-full of the skin of his own cheek that he could risk it. Even if it offended Genesis, well, that was on him for going after an obviously sensitive subject.
"I've done what's necessary. Killed where I had to, kept it to a minimum if I can" Caius answered after a breath and a moment to rest -- to keep his calm. "Don't suppose you want to talk about why you looked like you were about to try and gut me?" Caius decided to needle back, with the slightest hint of emphasis on the word "try". He wasn't the icy queen that his partner was, but at times they weren't so different either.
Genesis named some things about Shinra that Caius knew, and some that he didn't either. Caius couldn't hide visible disgust this time as he described things that Shinra had done. "Some of it, yes. Greed is the strangest of strong motivators. And is more often than not, the biggest enemy of those who just want to be left alone and live their lives" he mused aloud, his hands gripping the handles tight when he felt the glider jerk to the side. Genesis waxed more poetic that Caius didn't understand, and he didn't bother to try. "It wouldn't surprise me if some of the organizations in Sonora are doing the same things you describe. The place is a hole of greed, where ethics and morality go to die."

[attr=class, bulk] Caius did a good job of keeping his cool, despite Genesis’ efforts to poke at him. Ugh, that was no fun at all. Though in hindsight, maybe that was for the best when his sword and coat were back on the ship along with all his materia. He had his strength and his wing of course, but he didn’t particularly like his chances in a fight when he was currently without either weapon or magic. Oh well, Zack had improvised against his copies once with a beach umbrella. Genesis supposed that he could do the same even if it wasn’t particularly dignified.
Either way, Caius responded rather tersely that he only killed when he had to before asking why exactly Genesis had gotten so riled up. The ex-SOLDIER just rolled his eyes at the accusation that he had been about to try and gut him. “Please, I’d never kill you like that. Do you know how awful human entrails smell? That’s entirely too messy,” he complained as he leaned on one hand again to consider the horizon. Parasailing was much less work than flying, but the wind whipping through his hair really did feel similar.
Still, he pursed his lips as he debated whether or not to answer the blond man’s question. It wasn’t as if it really mattered anymore. Not after the goddess had cured him with a little help from Zack. “Degrade,” he finally muttered, his eyes still on the ocean. “I thought you’d been talking to someone.” Most likely Zack or Angeal. Sephiroth wasn’t likely to interact with strangers, and even less likely to spill someone else’s business. Their friendship had been strained over the years, but it was one of the best parts about the silver-haired man honestly.
Caius looked a little disgusted as Genesis listed off a bullet point version of what Shinra had been up to. That was one thing they could both agree on then at least. After a moment, Caius even made the comparison between Shinra and Sonora, which made Genesis scowl in a way that wasn’t directed at the blond man for once. “I don’t think the similarities are lost on anyone from Gaia,” he agreed with a toss of his short hair. “When the war of the beasts brings about the world’s end, the goddess descends from the sky.”
He was mostly just waxing poetic, but that was an interesting thought.
“Seeing as we can’t dismantle Shinra anymore, perhaps Sonora would be a cathartic replacement,” he said with a chuckle as he glanced over at his sailing companion. “I doubt that even you heroes could be too mad about that?”

Caius Lucis Caelum
"I suppose I wouldn't be a fan of the smell, no," was spoken far too calm, considering the implication. And Caius wasn't talking about his own entrails either. Despite Genesis setting the manor aflame, Caius still had some confidence in his own abilities. And he was scarcely ever in danger of being without a weapon. Even if he was? It wouldn't be the first time. Caius closed his eyes, though didn't lower his guard. As he relaxed a bit and felt out to the wind caressing his face, he could still hear the movement of Genesis' wing. If it came to it, he'd know.
Degrade, that had been the word that had set him off. Caius opened his eyes again when he said it, glancing at Genesis with a raised brow and a squint. That was a very strange trigger word, and it came with the implication he had been talking to someone that Genesis hadn't wanted him to be talking to. "Would you be willing to elaborate on why that word?" he asked, figuring he might as well try to learn as much as he could. It could be important, or at the least distract Genesis from trying to cause trouble.
Genesis agreed with the Sonora comparison, and Caius nodded to that... Only to let out a sigh as Genesis broached the possibility of "dismantling" it all. "My compatriots wouldn't approve of this line of thinking, but... It's not like I haven't thought about it," Caius admitted quietly. "Tearing down their hierarchy of power through force. Taking out those who shouldn't hold dominance over the people, yet exert it regardless. Making life better for Sonora's people, and ending their cycle of pain and suffering. It sounds wonderful... But I don't think I can."
Caius chewed the inside of his cheek. "There are those who would be unfairly dragged into that war if I started it. I have a responsibility to them, and the mission we swore to."
And he hated that it meant Sonora's people would suffer. He detested the very thought, it made him sick to his stomach to think of those people suffering. "One day, I'll find a way. I don't have the capacity to stand idly by forever. But no, I suppose I wouldn't be mad if others stepped up. So long as they remember that the civilians aren't their enemy. I've heard rumors of resistance groups popping up, but they always seem to lose sight of what they're fighting for."
They always seemed to be overtaken by bloodlust. Unable to discern between those in front of them.

[attr=class, bulk] Caius agreed that human entrails didn’t smell particularly well, but he was so utterly calm about it that Genesis groaned and melted further into his seat. “Does anything rile you up? Or are you all monotone all the time? Because I’m starting to lean towards the second.” Genesis liked to think that he could carry a conversation by himself, but it was always nice to have some validation that his remarks were getting to people. Caius didn’t seem inclined to give that to him though.
Even worse, he asked for more details about why the word ‘degrade’ specifically had set him off. The ex-SOLDIER scowled over at him in answer. “Read the room, Caius,” he complained with a wave of his hand. Then again, not everyone was the best at that. Sephiroth was absolutely terrible at picking up subtext, and it wouldn’t really surprise him if the blond man was in the same boat. Pun intended of course. It fit their current situation a little too well.
“Shinra didn’t exactly create me to last,” he relented, brushing a stray feather off his shoulder as if he didn’t care at all about what he was saying. Funny how deep everything could still cut even when he was no longer degrading. The goddess had seen to that, but it didn’t change how disposable he’d been to them. “I suppose it takes a pile of failed experiments before you get a success. And they called us monsters.” Not a wrong assessment perhaps. Genesis was more than self-aware about his lack of humanity, but they needed to look in the mirror sometimes. Glass houses and all that.
Surprisingly, Caius admitted that he had thought about the possibility of overthrowing Sonora before. He didn’t think he could do it himself though, because the potential for civilian casualties was too high. Genesis could have taunted him for being too afraid of doing the hard stuff, but instead it prompted him to remember the final lines of Loveless that he’d penned himself. A fitting end to the epic poem, in his opinion. “To become the dew that quenches the land. To spare the sands, the seas, the skies. I offer thee this silent sacrifice.”
He shrugged afterwards, knowing that he himself hadn’t lived up to that very much. Not during his rebellion against Shinra at least. “Bystanders always die in wars. But I suppose if enough of you heroes got together, then you might be able to minimize it. Who can say?” It sounded like something Zack would want too, at least.

Caius Lucis Caelum
That? Actually got a laugh out of Caius. He had learned to be as calm as possible, regardless of what circumstances were wrought. He had to, really. Caius wouldn’t have survived for those ten years if he hadn’t. It had been a necessary thing, but to see it actually begin to vex Genesis was funny to him. What was even funnier, however, was Genesis’ insistence that he needed to read the room. As if he had somehow inconvenienced him greatly by asking for more information. Caius turned his head a bit towards Genesis, and the corner of his mouth actually seemed to form into a touch of a grin.
“You’re the one purposely trying to rile me up” Caius pointed out. Genesis hadn’t exactly been socially welcoming and caring about his feelings either. In fact, he only seemed to care enough about his feelings to the extent that it bothered him that he couldn’t get a rise out of Caius, and little else. But at the end of it, Genesis actually did decide to talk about it. Had he actually won enough trust for that, or did he just like hearing himself talk? Caius wasn’t all that sure. But it at least gave him a little bit of understanding in regards to Genesis’ way of thinking.
“That’s not fair at all,” Caius admitted softly. “It doesn’t really matter how you came to be. Life is to be cherished, while we still have it. How it started or how long it lasts shouldn’t dub you monster" the glaive mused aloud. “You dictate who and what you are, in the time allowed. Do you know how long you have left?”
Genesis had neglected to mention that he was no longer decaying, and thus no longer had such a short lifespan, so Caius had asked that question in hopes talking about it might give Genesis an outlet he probably had been lacking. His tone, while calm, was soft and empathetic, showing he wanted to be there to support this pyromaniac stranger – as strange, perhaps, as that was. Caius hadn’t forgotten that Genesis was dangerous, but he couldn’t hear that and not want to help in some way.
“Hmm, I guess it’s possible,” Caius near-whispered at the prospect of getting a team of heroes together that were large enough to overthrow Sonora’s government. “We have our own mission right now. Don’t have the resources to allocate to do both – when going to war would be such a life-changing thing for all involved. Perhaps when we make some headway, grow in resources and capability, and ensure elsewhere will be safe while we make the trek. It may eventually be doable. Once we’re ready.”
He looked out to sea and flashed a sad smile. “I’m not against taking that leap. Sacrifice isn’t new to me."

[attr=class, bulk] Caius actually laughed when Genesis complained about not getting a rise out of him, which made the red-haired SOLDIER scowl out at the ocean as if it had personally wronged him. The hero also seemed pretty amused when he was told to read the room, pointing out that Genesis was the one trying to rile him up. “To my utter failure apparently. By the goddess, you’re like Angeal,” he said with a groan. It may not have seemed like an insult considering that Angeal was one of his best friends, but said best friend was also patient and bone-headed to a fault. It was definitely meant as an insult.
Oh. Oh no, Caius was sympathizing with him. Why did heroes have to be so understanding? Here all Genesis was trying to do was poke holes in his armor, and Caius had the audacity to try to be a good person back at him? That was no fun at all. “I don’t need your pity,” he grumbled, coming off like a petulant teenager as he sank lower in his bindings. “And I know that! Zack and I already did this whole song and dance routine. I’m not even dying anymore. I’m just not very…good at being good.” That was more insightful than Genesis usually was about himself. Honestly though, what chance had he really had in life? There were the rich neglectful “parents” that Shinra had found for him, countless atrocities that Shinra had ordered SOLDIER to commit during the Wutai war, and then everything with Jenova. That really set the bar for goodness pretty low. At least he wasn’t out here being a serial killer! Er. People who may have died in the manor fire aside. Oh well.
Caius seemed to take the possibility of banding together a group of people who could take down Sonora seriously. At least for the long-term, since he expressed that he had too much on his plate right now to commit the resources that would be needed. Almost as an afterthought, he also added that he was used to making sacrifices, which made Genesis quirk an eyebrow. “Seen your share of war too, have we? Maybe you’re more of the tragic hero variety.” And then, because that practically demanded a Loveless quote, he added on a piece of poetry. “When the war of the beasts brings about the world’s end, the goddess descends from the sky.”

Caius Lucis Caelum
“He seemed nice. I’ll take that as a compliment” Caius spoke without even putting major thought into how Genesis might react. He had filed the information of them knowing each other away, but at this point Genesis was either going to try and torch him and the ship, or he wasn’t. He didn’t know if anything he said would make a difference for or against at this point. It seemed like something innocent could easily enough set him off, so Caius would just have to be prepared for whatever possibility.
He did, however, listen patiently as Genesis explained he was, in fact, not dying anymore. But he said something that piqued Caius’ curiosity. Not good at being good? As in he was actually trying? Considering the whole mansion thing, he could have fooled Caius on that front. Still, he supposed he couldn’t judge much. Didn’t that conflict just ring a bell? Caius half-closed his eyes as he stared out at the open sea, lost in thought. “It’s not exactly easy. Especially when you live through suffering, it’s a struggle. It becomes a tall order to learn. How do you act on things that you haven’t often seen extended to you?” Caius mused aloud. “I’m not perfect either. When that cruel slaver tried to take away someone precious to me — have them executed in front of me just out of spite for things not going their way — I took their head without hesitation. It wasn’t pretty, and I regret that my friend had to see me that way” he admitted softly, unsure of why he was allowing himself to go back to a place he had tried to forget. Maybe he really did want to believe Genesis could do better. Curse that hopeless optimism. “I did what I felt was necessary, but it was a gruesome end. I don’t know if even they deserved it. My friend certainly didn’t deserve to see it. She was already locked up the same as I was. It’s… Difficult, sometimes. Looking her in the eyes and wondering if deep down she sees a monster.”
There it was. Caius still hadn’t forgiven himself for what Yuna had been made to witness. The slaver’s death had been quick, but far from painless. Caius had only wanted to save Vordun, but his emotions had gotten the best of him. No matter how much he hid away, it always seemed to. Caius stared down at his hands, squeezing them into fists.
“When I see how they treat people in Sonora, it makes me want to hurt them. I’ve seen their prisons, heard horror stories about how they handle people who were imprisoned even just for practicing magic, or being born from a different world. It takes every fiber of my being to not rush every prison I can find, and on my way to liberating every wrongly imprisoned soul, slowly and painfully exact vengeance on everyone who would do that to them. I’ve watched my family be held prisoner, being treated like cattle, not even human. This feels no different, and it makes me desperately want to act, and in the process do things I would not be proud of.”
Caius winced a moment as his hand fell on his head, nursing a sudden splitting headache. His family had been held prisoner, yes, and by bandits he recalled. He tried searching his thoughts for how that had gone, but for some reason, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. But he knew one thing. “I don’t… I don’t want anyone to suffer like we did, never again. But I need to think logically. I need to be in control, find the right time to act, and not lose myself in the process. Or I could hurt the very people I want to help.”
Another “silent sacrifice”, as Genesis might call it. Not being able to pursue exactly what he wanted to at any given moment because of the harm it would cause, even if it hurt to walk away. His current objective, his position, all of it had given him the means to do so much good. But he wanted to do more, in other ways. And all he could do was suppress the emotions that came with it, until the time was right. Even at the sacrifice of his own mental health. How many nightmares had he experienced of the people being hurt that he could do nothing to help, because he chose not to?
“Back on Eos, I had little life to speak of before I joined the Kingsglaive. I had been alone for a very long time after what those bandits did to my family. I had no chance to have a childhood, no chance to grow up or have a life before it was all taken away. And when I finally had the chance to rebuild again after so many years, I gave up my life so my world’s people, and the King who gave me that chance, could have a future” Caius spoke softly as he held out a hand, as if he could just grasp the wide open world below. “In return, it seems this world gave me a second chance. This time, I’ve sworn to make the most of it.”
