I have killed the monster
Watching the slipshod child scurry away, Jill pulled the hood of her cloak over her head, turning away and beginning her journey into the bustling crowds of Sonora’s Velvet Street. The paved roads were easy on her bootheals, a pleasant departure from the cobblestone walkways of Valisthea. Everything about this place was different from the world she knew, making it difficult not to marvel at its technological wonders. Though she needed to keep her head down and blend in as best she could, avoiding the wandering eyes of curious onlookers. If the child was to be trusted, the inhabitants of Sonora did not take kindly to those whose origin was of another world.
It seemed this phenomenon was commonplace within Zephon, forcing Jill to question if she was the sole inhabitant of Valisthea to have made the traumatizing journey. She had assumed this was yet another of Ultima’s machinations, but it had become clear that the two were unrelated. Saying a prayer to Metia, the northerner pleaded for Clive’s survival, wishing he might be spared a fate such as her own.
Jill continued past a cluster of townsfolk, each making their bets on a game of cards being played by street merchants. It was the first semblance of familiarity she had experienced since her arrival to this foreign land. She and Joshua had spent many evenings slipping past their guard detail to catch sight of the games played throughout the night on the streets outside Rosalith. A smile nearly crept across her lips as a figure crashed into her, sending her sprawling to the pavement below.
“Please, don’t!” A woman cried out from only a few yards away, “My wages! Please, come back!”
Catching her breath, slate-colored eyes followed the shadowy figure who had just forced her to the ground. His dark hair tossed in the night’s breeze, a faded crimson scarf twisting behind him. She caught sight of a satchel tucked beneath his arm, all but confirming he was the cause for the woman’s distress. Acting on instinct, Jill extended an arm, aether rushing through her veins, casting a blizzard spell. A whip-like stream of frost burst from the tips of her fingers, reaching through the crowded streets until it caught the edge of the thief's scarf. Spreading over the tattered fabric, the frost chilled, turning to heavy ice as it closed around his neck.
Jill gained her footing and cut ties with the aether, watching the man topple over due to the weight of his now-frozen accessory. “Now that wasn’t so wise, was it?” She called out to the thief, taking quick strides to approach him. “I believe you took something that doesn’t belong to you.”
Only then did she realize the scene she had just created. Dozens of curious citizens broke off from their games and began to crowd around her and the man she had forced to the floor. There was no use in trying to deny her actions, it was clear as day she was the one responsible for the magick, but surely they could understand she was not the one at fault here. Reaching down to retrieve the woman’s bag, panic began to build in her chest. “Bloody hell.” Jill cursed, almost convinced she could see the kid from before snickering in the distance.

The Dragonblade
“I suggest you keep walking and don’t make eye contact” suggested a figure behind her, wearing a suit. They had long blonde hair, tied back in a braid. But as calm, low and tired as the voice sounded, looking back, Jill would see the face of a man much younger than she. The facial hair helped a bit, however. Still, the man looked far more weathered than he should be in his years.
How Caius had found himself in the most unsavory district of Sonora, he didn’t really know if he was being honest. Perhaps it was just to have a minute where the eyes of Sonora’s tyrannical law enforcement were least focused. Or maybe a pretty sign had drawn him here in his wanderings, he wasn’t really sure. He could never find himself getting used to Sonora, and getting lost in this hole had become a common occurrence when he wasn’t living in the log cabin with Lumina out on Mount Hotan.
As much as he hated to say it, he had business here in Sonora. Business that would keep him here against his better judgement for a bit longer. But one thing he definitely wasn’t used to seeing was someone openly using magic in the streets. Sure, it was Velvet Street, but still, anyone who used magic in Sonora was quickly suspected of being an outworlder. And in Sonora, their very existence was illegal. If this woman was mistaken for an outlander, or perhaps even was one… She ran the risk of being carted off to who-knows-where, never to return. And all to save a woman whom had been robbed. A woman who was likely staring at her far more fearfully than she had been the robber just before.
“I’m not sure if you know this. But magic users aren’t exactly happy sights in Sonora.”
He whispered it to the lady again as he gently took her arm, trying very, very hard to lead her away from the crowd as soon as humanly possible. If allowed, he took the bag from her and tossed it to the woman whom it belonged to.
“I have questions. But I can’t ask them if you wind up in a cell. Please help me to help you.”

I have killed the monster
Feeling a gloved hand find her shoulder, a gentle voice insisted she disengage and walk away without a look or word to anyone. Given this stranger’s lack of force, she made the assumption he was not a guard trying to cart her away to some derelict cell, leaving her curious as to why another patron of this foreign world was trying to help her. While she appreciated the generosity, she was growing tired of being the damsel in distress.
Glancing over her shoulder, Jill was surprised to see the face of a young man. Donning a suit, his blonde hair was braided back from his face, accentuating his boyish features. He was handsome, though perhaps a bit tired. Were it not for his neatly groomed facial hair, she may have said he reminded her of a young Dion Lesage.
Nodding her head, her gaze shifted back forward. The crowd around the pair had nearly doubled since retrieving the woman’s bag. Dozens of Velvet Street patrons gawked at her with exaggerated expressions of disgust and fear. ‘What don’t they understand?’ She asked herself, frustration swirling within her. She had just stopped a man from taking an innocent woman’s gil. Why couldn’t they see her actions as admirable?
The man from behind took her arm, whispering in her ear again. According to his intel, the use of magick was less than revered in Sonora. An interesting mindset for a people living in a land filled with aetheric energies, but it wasn’t her place to judge. Feeling his weight press against her, Jill began to move forward, allowing him to take hold of the satchel in the process. Watching him toss the woman her belongings, a mix of embarrassment and genuine confusion coiled into pins and needles that spread across her limbs, just as they had on the frosted mountains with Sephiroth.
Twice now a man had stepped in to resolve a problem she may or may not have created for herself, both acting as guides in what felt like a tutorial of survival on Zephon. She hated it. After years of being under the thumb of a tyrannical priest, Jill had only begun to know the taste of freedom, only for it to be ripped away in some cabalistic act of dislocation.
Her emotions having reached a crescendo, she pulled her arm from the mysterious man’s grasp. “I have no issue in following you,” Jill started, “But I will not be pulled around like a child.” She knew her anger was misplaced, likely unwarranted, but her need to reclaim some sense of autonomy was paramount. Resting a hand on the hilt of her rapier, she continued to follow the suited man through the streets and away from the crowd.
Once the pair had forged a meaningful distance from the alleged danger, she let out a baited breath and turned to him. “I apologize for my curt response, and appreciate your assistance. The last few days have been difficult, but that is no excuse for my cross behavior. Like you, I also have many questions. Where might be an appropriate place to discuss them?”

The Dragonblade
Now that he got a look at her, the woman herself looked weathered. A fair bit older than he, though (besides a certain incident involving a pair of clippers and Yuffie) he hadn't seen his youthful face unobstructed by hair in a long time so he wasn't entirely sure either. He had to wonder how many years this woman had suffered, for he could see wariness derived from suffering in those eyes that told him she had suffered long before coming here. Perhaps he could learn a story or two from her in time? Once he got her out of here, anyway.
Caius made a face however, when her anger was misplaced in his direction. She DID see he was trying to help, right? She claimed that she would not be pulled around like a child, which after a pause, was received with a shrug. It didn’t matter to him how it happened, he just needed her out of here and out of sight. The both of them, at that. “That works for the best. Lumey would be cross if I spent long in arm with another woman” the mercenary answered calmly, the slightest smile curving at the edge of his features. Perhaps she wouldn’t expect a joke, and it would disarm her rage. It would certainly make the trip easier.
Not that Caius had spoken any falsehoods. He highly doubted Lumina would be thrilled if she found out. While they hadn’t made any matter of commitment, she had made no qualms about the fact she was very much attached.
Not that the attachment was one-sided…
“There’s a little restaurant not far from here. It’s not the most upscale, but I’ll treat you as thanks for helping that woman. The people here may not laud and reward your heroics, but my code is a touch different. As a bonus, the tables are in little booths. So long as we’re quiet, we can speak with little in disturbances.”
"Not very upscale" was expected on Velvet Street, unless you were very wealthy. Caius was not. Especially not in Sonora. But, keeping his voice low, he did have to ensure she knew one thing ahead of time.
“I’m serious about the quiet part. If you don’t know Sonoran politics, if they suspect you’re from another world, even if you’re not. You’re getting carted off and not coming back. And most offworlders just so happen to know magic. Which if you don’t know already, is why people are looking at you like you caught the plague.”
Which was pretty on the nose considering a magic plague actually had hit Sonora.
“Magic users might as well be walking to death row in their eyes. Not to mention all the propaganda. They've made people fear those such as you.”
