Word had gotten to Tobias that they needed a priest to lay the dead to rest to help them move on to the afterlife. Well he might look like a priest but Tobias was far from one. His hands were covered in blood and no matter how many times he washed them he was still a killer and that's what he would always be. Still though he felt bad for the people of Provo so he took the job out of the kindness of his heart and well hopefully he could get some gil out of it after all he didn't work for free. He smoked a cigarette at the bottom of the steps and once he was done he crushed the cigarette under his well dressed shoes before walking in. As he walked in people were sitting in the pews and as the doors closed behind him, people were looking at him and he could hear whispers coming from them. He just let out a heavy sigh and walked towards the alter. As he did his footsteps echoed with each step and once he reached the alter he set his cross against the wall before walking back towards the alter.
He looked at the two bodies and they were young girls taken in the prime of their life. He heard of what happened to them as they were attacked in farm lands by a monster. The monster was killed but sadly not in time to save these two girls. Tobias cleared his throat before speaking. "Heavenly Father who art in Heaven. Please guide these two souls in the afterlife and welcome them with open arms. Protect them all the other departed souls in the afterlife. Here lays Sophita and Cassandra may they rest in peace." said Tobias to the crowd of people. People gather towards the coffins and began putting flowers and other personal things in there. Tobias grabbed his Cross and began to walk towards the man who owned the church. "Why I must say that was a lovely service-" said the priest before he was cutoff by Tobias. "You got gil to pay my fee?" asked Tobias to the priest who looked surprised as the man was direct and to the point. "O-Oh yes here you go." said the priest as he pulled out a small bag of gil from his pocket. Tobias looked at bag and grabbed it feeling the weight of the bag seemed light and he let out a heavy sigh as he was annoyed. "Bag seems light Father." said Tobias annoyed The priest let out a nervous chuckle. "Well about that-" said the priest but Tobias walked away before the man could continue. Tobias walked towards the bottom of the steps ad as he did he lit another cigarette.
[attr=class, bulk] Yuna didn’t often attend funerals in Provo unless she knew someone personally. It was funny really—back on Spira she’d dealt so often with the dead as it was a summoner’s duty to send the souls of the departed to the Farplane. But here it was different. As far as she could tell, there was no physical Farplane on Zephon, and the souls of the dead certainly didn’t turn into fiends. There were still a few uses for her sending ritual such as dealing with the ghosts of the Headstone Forest, but when it came to the recently deceased, performing a sending just wasn’t as necessary as it had been on Spira. It was an odd feeling. Maybe that was why she advertised her white mage skills and chose to leave her work with the dead mostly in the past.
Still, Yuna felt compelled to attend the funeral today that was happening for two young girls. She was supposed to have healed them—or at least, the witnesses had come to hire her for that purpose after the poor teenagers had been attacked in the fields. By the time they had arrived though, it had already been too late. Yuna’s heart ached for the families, so she resolved to attend the funeral and sit respectfully in the back. She didn’t want to get in the way after all.
Yuna wasn’t familiar with the priest who walked in to perform the last rites. He was a young man with dark hair, and he wore a nice suit like the other priests in Provo would. Curiously though, he had a large cross-shaped object draped over his back that was covered in some kind of cloth. Yuna let her eyes linger on it as he set it down. Maybe it was some kind of weapon? It would certainly hurt to be bludgeoned with it, but that seemed out of character for someone who worked in a church. Maybe he traveled around and needed something for protection though.
The man’s service was brief, but it was moving, and Yuna hoped that it brought comfort to their families as they stepped forward to lay flowers on the caskets. The summoner herself stayed in her seat to pay her respects, and that was the only reason that she overheard the conversation between the high priest of the temple and the man who had given the service as he made his way towards the exit. He didn’t seem to be in the mood for any kind of small talk as he immediately asked for his fee. He seemed pretty dissatisfied with the amount that he’d been paid too, which seemed at odds with the religious service he’d just given.
Yuna frowned as she watched the man exit the church. After a moment’s pause, she slipped out of the pew and followed him out onto the front steps. He was lighting something that she’d seen other people smoke here. Cigarettes hadn’t really existed on Spira, so Yuna herself wasn’t too fond of the acrid smoke, but she just did her best to stand upwind from where the smell was drifting.
“...You know, they say funerals here are more for the living than the dead.” Yuna broached as she settled against the railing. “But that wasn’t the case where I’m from. The dead needed guidance. It makes me wonder if they do here too.” Smiling faintly, she looked over at him, her eyes lingering a bit on his large cross again. “I’m Yuna by the way. I used to do something similar back home.”

Tobias was enjoying his cigarette until he heard a voice from behind him. He turned around to see a beautiful woman who was dressed really unique clothing from the looks of her he figured she was a nun of this church but why stand out in front of the priests? She went on to talk about how funerals were more for the living than the dead. But then she said how the dead needed guidance where she is from and that made him wonder wither she was from here or another world? She then introduced herself as Yuna and oh man she was a looker to Tobias. The man simply finished his cigarette and stomped it out before replying back to her. "Name's Tobias and you make an interesting point about funerals. Well if were being honest here I'm not a priest not in the traditional sense anyway." said Tobias calmly as he looked at the woman. He noticed her eyeing his cross and he smirked. "This thing here is my weapon protects me with her life and in return I do the same." said Tobias to Yuna. "You said where your from the dead need guidance right? Well what about the living are you saying the sinners where your from should break all the rules and do whatever the hell they want?" asked Tobias casually. He then chuckled and shook his head lightly. "I'm kidding. But let me ask you something...No matter how bad a person is do you think they deserve forgiveness?" asked Tobias to Yuna.
He then pulled out his pack of cigarettes and was about to light it but he stopped himself and put it back in his pack before putting it away. Cigarettes was a hell of a bad habit and he would hate for it to interrupt his conversation with this woman. "Where I'm from it's survival of the fittest and being a man of the cloth doesn't give you an advantage. People will always try to harm or take advantage of someone it doesn't matter what situation you're in. I remember years ago I formed a mercenary group with people I would consider family. Our goal to bring justice sounds simple right?" asked Tobias rhetorically. "Well we brought justice by any means necessary. I killed people so many that I've lost count but the crazy thing is every time I close my eyes...I see them. Now let me ask you something Yuna with how much blood is on my hands you think I deserve forgiveness? Better yet you've sinned right? All those sins that you have committed you should be asking yourself do I deserve forgiveness?" asked Tobias in a calm tone as he stared at the woman.
[attr=class, bulk] The man introduced himself as Tobias as he stomped out his cigarette underfoot. He claimed that he wasn’t a priest in the traditional sense, which made Yuna glance at him a little more curiously. “Yet you give sermons.” It was more of an observation than anything. He could have just meant that he was something similar to a priest—she was similar to one as a summoner—but his tone told her that wasn’t quite it. She doubted that he was just doing funerals for the money at any rate. There were better ways to make gil. Perhaps a part of him enjoyed helping people even if he’d almost certainly deny it.
He seemed to notice that she was looking at the cross slung over his shoulder, and Tobias introduced it as his weapon. Yuna couldn’t help but smile faintly when she caught the gender he used for it. “Your weapon’s a woman then?” A little teasing, but she couldn’t resist since he was being a bit rough around the edges.
Tobias returned her joke though as he pointed out that since only the dead needed guidance on Spira, did that mean that the living got away with everything? “Pretty much the opposite,” she said with a slight laugh since she realized he was only messing with her. “At least in the past. I think they have a much brighter future ahead of them now.” Sin had been defeated and the church of Yevon had no more reason to exist. Hopefully people would be able to live as they wanted to now.
The tone of the conversation turned dark as Tobias asked her if everyone deserved forgiveness. Yuna weighed her answer for a moment, thinking of how Maester Seymour had followed her like a shadow and how the rest of the council had been more than willing to cover up his crimes. Before she could answer though, Tobias detailed some things he had done in his own past, and Yuna frowned as she looked up at him. He would have come across as pretty dangerous if not for one single line that stuck with her. Every time I close my eyes I see them. If that wasn’t remorse then she didn’t know what was, so she did her best to keep the tone of her voice calm.
“No. I don’t believe that everyone deserves forgiveness,” she said simply. “There are people that I’ll never forgive. And I’m sure you’re right that there are people who will never forgive me.” Like Grand Maester Mika and anyone else who wanted the order of Yevon to continue. Yuna thought that she could live with having people like that as her enemies though.
“But…” Yuna added a caveat as she looked up at Tobias. “I think that if you’d like to make amends with your past, then you deserve to forgive yourself for it.”

Tobias chuckled as he heard her say that the people in her land have a much brighter future ahead of them. "Well I wish I could say the same for my people back home. It's gunna take a lot more than praying that's for sure." said Tobias with a dry chuckle. But it was interesting as she told him if he wanted to make amends with his past he would have to forgive himself. Now this hit him to his core as he struggled with this even now talking to this woman it was always going to be an on going battle within himself. He took out his back of cigarettes and lit up a smoke with his zippo lighter. Putting away the pack he took a long drag off the cigarette before responding to Yuna. "Forgive myself...That's a tough thing to do. But you do make an excellent point about not everyone deserving forgiveness and I gotta agree with ya on that." said Tobias to Yuna. He paused for a moment taking a drag off his cigarette. "You know when I was in my early twenties I saved my nephew from getting killed, we were carrying out a job at the time and it was suppose to be rescue mission. It was suppose to be simple. We went there and at first we tired to ask nicely as we didn't want any bloodshed. It was a small gang and they had kidnapped some bigwig from Junon. They wanted to fight back and that's when we showed them what we could do. We killed them all or so we thought." said Tobias to Yuna.
He paused yet again to take a drag off his cigarette. "We found our target in the basement of this small house where the gang was staying at but the leader was using him as a human shield. The worst part was he had his wife as a human shield as well. He holding a rifle above their heads and we froze because it's his family. He started to send rounds our way and I made my decision. I killed him and his wife." said Tobias his voice calm yet somewhat sorrowful. He heard the Church bells go off from the Church and he turned his attention back to Yuna. "Wanna get a drink or something? Maybe some food? I'm new to this city so I figured you might know the best spots. It's my treat, how does that sound Yuna?" asked Tobias to Yuna.
[attr=class, bulk] Tobias seemed to have a much grimmer outlook for his home than Yuna did for Spira. Hopefully his people were faring better than he seemed to think, but it was really impossible to tell unless they managed to find a way back to their own worlds. It was just sad he had to live with not knowing if they were even doing okay though. There just wasn’t much that could be done about that.
Her words about forgiving himself seemed to get to Tobias, which Yuna could only tell because the man paused and took the time to light another cigarette before responding. He had an interesting little device that could make fire, and the summoner looked at the tiny piece of machina curiously before nodding her agreement that self-forgiveness could be tough. “I think sometimes it’s a life-long journey. But I bet you’ll get there.” She gave him a small smile that faded a little as he outlined a time he had been forced to kill an innocent woman to stop someone from hurting him and his men.
“That…would be a tough call,” Yuna admitted, looking up to where the smoke from his cigarette was curling upwards towards the sky. “If you could do it over, would you choose the same thing?” She liked to think that she wouldn’t have been able to hurt someone who hadn’t done anything, but then again if one of her guardians had been in danger…she wasn’t sure. Maybe there was no right or wrong answer to a situation as complicated as that.
The church bells rang above them, signaling the end of the funeral. People would probably come pouring out of the church doors any moment now, so Yuna moved off the side to make room. She wasn’t sure if Tobias wanted to continue their conversation or if he planned to leave now that his job was done, but to her surprise he asked if she’d like to get a drink or food, and he even offered to pay. “Oh, you don’t have to pay for me,” she protested, since she didn’t mind contributing. Still, it was nice of him to offer. He seemed to value money quite a bit from the way he had haggled with the priest inside the church, so maybe something that she’d said had hit home with him.
“But I’d be happy to show you around. There’s actually a pretty nice pub down the street. The food there can be very good too.” Yuna hadn’t drunk much alcohol back on Spira. She’d been too busy with her duties and training to become a summoner, but ever since coming to Zephon various people had introduced her to it. Some had been more pleasant than others—she still didn’t like remembering a certain night where she’d run into Ardyn by accident—but this promised to be an interesting afternoon. If Yuna had a good reading on Tobias, then he seemed like a man who could be dangerous when the situation called for it, but otherwise had quite a few regrets in his life. Maybe they could both do with a drink.

Tobias was getting more intrigued by their conversation every minute. When asked wither he would do the same thing again with killing an innocent woman to save his people? He just let out a heavy sigh and just shrugged. Sure he would have an answer after a few drinks to clear his head but now he just wanted to cut loose. When the summoner mentioned a nearby pub with good food the Turk just smirked. "Nice! I could kill for some grub right now." he said half jokingly. As they started walking over to the pub Tobias turned to look at Yuna. "So you told me earlier that you did something similar to priest work? So what are you a nun?" asked Tobias to Yuna. It was a short walk to the pub and once inside. Tobias inhaled deeply as a smile appeared on his face, it had been way to long since he had a beer and some good food. "Is it just you two?" asked the hostess to Yuna and Tobias. "Yeah just us two." said Tobias to the hostess. The woman than lead them to a booth and Tobias set his cross against the wall inside the booth while he sat down next to it. When Yuna sat down the hostess passed out menus to them. "I'll give you guys a moment to check out the menu and I'll be back." said the hostess. Once she left Tobias pulled out his cigarette and was about to light it with his lighter when he heard someone clearing their throat. He looked up and noticed it was the bartender who pointed to a no smoking sign. Tobias just let out a sigh and he put his cigarette back in his case. He noticed earlier that Yuna was looking at his lighter and he slid it to her. "You ever seen one of these before?" asked Tobias to Yuna.
[attr=class, bulk] Tobias just shrugged when Yuna asked if he’d do the same thing over again, and that was honestly fair. It might have been one of those decisions that was hard to make until you were on the spot and only had a split second to act. Since he didn’t seem keen to answer though, she decided to let the topic drop for now. Maybe he didn’t want to talk about it anymore, and that was up to him.
He seemed to perk up though when Yuna suggested the pub just down the road. He joked that he could kill for some food right now, and the summoner gave him a reproachful look before smiling slightly. “After some other things you’ve said, I hope that isn’t true.” People were starting to pour out of the church though, so Yuna set off with the Turk down the street. Tobias asked her about her work, and she laughed when he said something about her being a nun.
“I’m a summoner. But they might be close,” she said with a smile. “Where I’m from, the dead would linger and turn into fiends unless a sending was performed. That was one of a summoner’s jobs, so that’s what I meant when I said I’d done similar work before.” Of course, the main job of a summoner had been to go on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin, but that was quite the story to throw at someone she’d just met. Maybe after a few drinks though. “What about you? You said you’re not quite a priest, and you mentioned doing mercenary work.” He seemed to have led an interesting life so far. She was sure that he had a few stories to tell.
As they reached the pub that Yuna had mentioned, Tobias talked to the hostess until they were both directed to a booth. She slid in across from him as he got his cross-shaped weapon settled. Yuna had been here before, but she still glanced over the menu to see if there had been any changes as Tobias pulled out another cigarette. He was quietly reprimanded by the bartender, so instead he sighed before sliding his lighter over to her. He asked if she’d ever seen one before, and she shook her head a little sheepishly. “On Spira—where I lived before—the church had banned most machina, so I’m still getting used to everything. This makes fire without magic though, right? That’s incredible.”
The lighter also had an interesting insignia on the front, and Yuna tilted her head slightly as she looked over the characters. “What’s Shinra by the way? Did they make it?”

Tobias looked over the menu and as he did he saw a few things that peaked his interested. He set down the menu and looked at Yuna to answer her question from before. "Well this here was a side job I mean back in my world I do have a more permanent job but this priest gig is just side work to be honest." said Tobias to the summoner. The Turk listened as she explained that on Spira that had banned most machina and to Tobias that was interesting. It almost made him question his own world what if Shinra wasn't around? What if they never started to suck up Mako from the planet in the first place? In the end it just lead to more questions than answers.
When asked about Shinra Tobias stretched his arms to loosen them up before answering her. "Shinra is the company I work for. I do jobs for them in order to keep my world safe or so they tell me. But to be honest-" said Tobias casually to Yuna before he was cutoff by the waitress. "So what can I offer you guys to drink?" asked the waitress to her guests. Tobias went first and cleared his throat. "I'll have the Fisherman's Special and a Red Eye to start with." said Tobias to the waitress who nodded and wrote down the ordered on her little notepad. Once she took Yuna's order she then left to go to the kitchen. "So back to what I was saying before she came over, to be honest I don't know if I believe everything that Shinra tells me. I just follows orders and keep my head down." said Tobias with a shrug. "What's Spira like? I mean a world where machina is banned sounds like paradise to me." asked Tobias with a smirk to Yuna.
[attr=class, bulk] Yuna tilted her head to the side when Tobias said that his priest role was more of a side job. “Extra money?” She guessed, remembering the exchange that she’d seen between him and the head priest at the temple. There was also the possibility that he just secretly enjoyed helping people, but she had a feeling that he wouldn’t tell her that even if it was true. He had a gruff exterior, a bit like Kimahri and Sir Auron had. You had to know both of them for a long time before you could see what was underneath. The same might be true of the man across from her.
Tobias had just started to tell her about Shinra when the waitress came back to take their orders. Yuna was still a bit new when it came to alcohol, so she was a bit embarrassed to admit that she didn’t know the drink that Tobias ordered. A red eye sounded interesting though—she was curious to see what it would come out looking like. For herself, Yuna ordered a glass of sweet red wine and a plate of the fish and chips. That sort of cuisine always made her a bit homesick since the island of Besaid had relied mostly on fish and tropical fruit, but sometimes it was nice to be reminded of home.
Tobias finished up what he had been saying about Shinra, and Yuna frowned slightly when he said that he didn’t know if they could actually be trusted. “...I understand.” More than she wanted to with how corrupt Yevon had turned out to be. “I still think it’s nice you were trying to help out where you’re from. Even if they aren’t telling you everything.”
He asked about Spira, and Yuna smiled a little sadly when he said that it sounded like a paradise if machina was banned. “You must not have good experiences with it. And I hope Spira is a paradise going forward now that Sin and Yevon are both gone.” That probably required some explanation, so Yuna tried to expand as she slid the lighter back across the booth to him. “Sin was a monster that had lived in Spira for a thousand years, and they formed a religion around telling people how to live their lives so that it wouldn’t come back. Including sacrificing summoners and not using machina. Would you be shocked to hear that it was all a lie?” It sounded so silly now to her that she had ever believed in the teachings, but it had been so easy to believe when her father had given his life for it. Yuna had been willing to give up hers as well. She would have gladly died for Spira if it would have made a difference. But not when there was no hope down that path.
“It sounds like the church of Yevon might have something in common with your Shinra,” Yuna said with a faint smile as the waitress returned with their drinks. She thanked her before taking a sip of her wine and looking over Tobias’ drink curiously. “What makes it so red?”
