[attr=class, bulk] So thankfully nobody thought using the ring on Alex was a good idea which meant no murder in Tifa’s bar which was not something Prompto wanted to see even if Alex was begging for it cause he thought he could take the power of the Ring of the Lucii. That was just like him, really. Thinking nothing could hurt him, they were all beneath him because they’d only fought an empire and whatever the hell Ardyn was while Alex had saved five worlds that morning or whatever. But Noctis agreed it was a bad idea, and Caius gave it a flat, “Please don’t,” so that was the end of that. Hopefully. Probably.
If Noctis needed to use the ring inside the prison then they’d just have to cross their fingers and pray it worked.
What was a little less clear though was what exactly Caius would do during the whole thing. It seemed like they’d shot a big hole through his behemoth idea. Which left them with…nothing. At least when it came to distractions. Prompto crossed his arms and leaned back and thought long and hard about what he could do from a distance, but then again, he’d be hiding in a box or something. ”I guess somebody could borrow my autocrossbow and start shooting. That’d get attention,” he said before realizing how that sounded and quickly adding, ”Er, that’s the name of a mini gun. Niflheim tech. Not like I can hide that going in so…”
Noctis suggested just summoning Ramuh and Prompto laughed. ”Yeah, that’d do it! Just a big old shot of lightning from the sky! Wait, are you saying you can’t do that anymore? I guess that’s not too big a deal. They always kinda picked and chose when they’d show up. It was real scary too…”
Though that did leave him wondering, was this somewhere even the Astrals couldn’t reach? Or had the Astrals decided to stop working with Noctis for some reason? The first thought sent a shiver up his spine. The second didn’t bother him so much. He liked Noctis cause he was a cool dude, not cause he was a Lucian prince who all the gods were into. The gods could be real dicks about it anyway. But after everything they’d done for them to just abandon Noctis now…
It wasn’t right.
Prompto picked up one of the masks that Caius had brought, turning it over in his hands. ”Dude, it totally looks like we’re about to rob a bank in these!” he said before turning to Noctis to see if he agreed. He thought he’d agree. ”It’ll be hard to blend in wearing this. For me and Noctis, I mean. Like. These are real suspicious. And once we get Iggy and Gladio, we’ll be sticking together and we know they know their faces.”
Prompto didn’t really care too much either way. If Noctis thought the masks would be useful then he’d use it without another word. ”Wouldn’t any mask work on face recognition software? I mean, unless there’s something about Sonora tech I don’t know. Plus, we’d have to have our faces somewhere they’d know to look. If they’ve got face recognition then they could probably use it on anybody who lives here, but not us! Not like we’re posting pictures on their internet or anything.”
He missed the internet. He really did.
He also missed posting pictures. And printing pictures. And taking pictures. And-
”So what do you think, Noct? Alex’ll need something to hide his face for sure. Oh! And Cindy too! Don’t want her getting in trouble cause of us.” He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced at her sheepishly. ”Thanks, Cindy. I….er…You know. For….driving.”
He still couldn’t quite meet her in the eye. His Grease Monkey Goddess.

The Dragonblade
"I'll do it."
Caius spoke up when Prompto suggested somebody could use the minigun. The behemoth plan was out, so he needed to find another way to distract the guards. Prompto's suggestion of using a minigun that he had on hand seemed to be their best bet. "My abilities grant me the best bet of opening fire, and then escaping with it before they can reach me. I'll dress head to toe in snow gear as well as one of the masks so they can't identify me, then see if I can't give the soldiers something more to worry about than inspecting cargo."
The masks weren't the best thing in the world, but they would do. Prompto did raise some concerns, however. Valid ones, though Caius had answers quickly enough. "It's a Sonoran prison, once you get inside you're not blending in, most likely no matter what you do" Caius pointed out at that. They were just too damn thorough, downright paranoid even. And their technology made it too difficult to blend in without a lot more prep work than they were likely willing to do. "Even if you could steal uniforms, ID scan chips, everything, I doubt their helmets would protect you from scans and there's a hundred things that could go wrong with a disguise. It's not worth it when your cover would be blown the minute you get within ten yards of your friends."
"As for scans. I don't know for sure, but Sonora's advanced to the point that I don't think regular face wear is going to cut it with their scanners. Especially in a maximum security prison. And if they do get your facials recorded... Consider what the Empire would do if they had technology on Sonora's level" Caius brought up then. "Even if they can't cross-reference you right now, that doesn't mean they won't keep it in their database. In case there's a chance they could send people into Provo, we can't risk being anything but completely incognito. Otherwise, you and anyone who is seen interacting with you are potentially in danger even if you succeed."
Unfortunately, it was already probably too late in regards to Ignis and Gladiolus. But the less of their number that Sonora had in their criminal files, the better.
Caius held up the mask he was to wear himself. "I'm not some technical genius, but I do know how to work weapons, armor, and clothing. I've laced parts of the masks with material that on our world, would mess with anything from scanners to x-rays. The kind that would give an airport a headache. There's no guarantee that Sonora's tech hasn't found a way around it, but it's better than anything else at our disposal."
He pulled out a few more masks, then. "I did make spares in case you brought on a few more people. The only problem is that they won't help you with border crossing, they'll make you take them off. But as I can guarantee that your friends already have their faces in criminal filing, you may have to fight your way through regardless. So keep the masks when you escape, you might still need them."
With that, Caius finished his drink, and while Noctis may have intended to pay himself, he still slid the gil he owed onto the counter for Tifa with a generous tip. He didn't have much Sonoran tender on him, but Tifa had earned it.
"When we wrap up, I need to speak to you two regarding some business later" he did note towards Noctis and Prompto. His gaze suddenly sharpened, as if just thinking about the subject matter was enough to completely change the stoic Kingsglaive's demeanor. He grit his teeth slightly, and his hands balled into fists. He did his best to keep that professional gait, but it wasn't hard to tell that he was extremely upset.
"The starscourge that Adagium brought here has melded with a parasite. And that parasite's taken host of someone important to me. When we find your friends, while I hate to ask a favor back and it was not my intention when coming here... I need your aid."
Caius averted his gaze as he found himself staring down at the table, continuing to do his best to keep professional, but... Under his breath he found himself muttering a desperate-
"I can't lose Lumina."

[attr=class,bulk] ”Eh…”
He listened to Caius’ speech about the masks. He still wasn’t sure about it. He turned it over in his hands, inspecting the fibers suspiciously. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Caius it was just…
Well, Caius himself said he didn’t know much about tech, right? He knew more about Sonoran tech for sure, but that was only because Prompto hadn’t had much time to learn about it. Astrals, that would be a pretty great night. Just him and a bunch of tech he’d found, taking it apart, seeing how it worked, maybe even reading some books about it. Prompto didn’t usually like reading, but tech magazines? Instruction manuals? Internet tutorials? That was heaven was far as he was concerned.
Too bad they’d probably never come back to Sonora again. Not that Prompto wanted to spend a single second longer here than they had to, but it seemed like the only place with any really interesting machinery around here. He wished he’d had the time to appreciate it.
”I’m not saying you’re wrong,” he said. ”I don’t know much about Sonora stuff, and I only know what I saw in the prison. Buuuuuut….” And there was his counterargument, ready to make everything more complicated for no reason.
”Masks work fine for face recognition, sure, but Noctis and me might get in a fight, and I need a clear line of sight if I’m gonna be shooting anything from a distance. And Noct’ll need his, er, what’s it called? When you see things from the side? Peripher…Uh. Vision. Anyway, a mask’ll make that harder. Only so big an eye hole can go, you know?”
He was rambling, but it was a thoughtful ramble. It wasn’t that he dismissed Caius’ ideas and hard work out of hand, and he’d totally wear it if Noct thought it was the best idea, but…
But…
”Face paint’ll also do the trick, you know? Least it did back in Insomnia. If you make it all jagged and wonky in different colors, the software doesn’t know what to make of it. Plus it looks, like, really cool.”
Part of him had always wished that he was a little more edgy, the kind that’d need to use that really cool paint, but he was best friends with the prince and his crownsguard. He literally joined the system instead of fighting it. He knew Lucis had its problem, and Insomnia especially didn’t treat the poor all too well. There’d been a reason they were raising their voices against it, and Prompto had watched it all unfold from the internet. Sitting in his computer chair. In between hangouts with Noctis and training to join the crownsguard.
Kinda hypocritical, really. But that was waaaay past him now.
”I know how to do it. If we’re not worried about standing out anyway, face paint’ll be way more light-weight, and we’ll be able to see things better. You and Cindy should totally wear the masks just to be safe, and we’ll keep those extras ready for anyone else. But me and Noct should probably stick to the basics, you know?”
He glanced at Noctis, part of him desperate for approval, part of him prepared to drop it all if Noct just gave the word. As much as he argued, it was more on principle than, like, a super important thing to him. He just liked tech. He liked talking about it too, and most of the time, his friends shut him up before he got too deep into the cogs and gears of the whole thing.
Caius wasn’t done talking though. He finished his drink and set it down definitively on the table (so cool!) before turning to Noctis and Prompto again about some business they’d do after this.
”Uh…okay?” Prompto wasn’t sure there would be an “after this,” but if Caius wanted to be optimistic, that was fine with him. Caius seemed real serious about it too. His fist was even clenched on the table which seemed like a bit much until he kept on talking.
And Prompto’s eyes widened. He sat up straight and leaned in closer, mouth agape in shock.
”The…The Scourge?!” He stared at Caius, hoping beyond hope that somehow this was a really sick, uncharacteristic joke. Then he looked at Noctis. Then at Caius again. ”It’s here? But how? That’s like totally impossible, right? We haven’t seen a single daemon since we got here!”
Because that’s how the whole thing worked. You get sick. Nothing can stop it. And then you turn into a daemon. Or at least, that’s how it usually worked when it wasn’t done in some miserable lab doing unspeakable things to innocent clones. Prompto bit his lip.
”I…don’t know if we can help, man. I mean, we can take out daemons. We do that all the time, but healing someone, that’s…” His eyes lowered. The panic he’d felt sank into something a lot darker as he muttered, ”That was Luna’s thing.”
He’d never known Lunafreya. He’d never met her, really. But he knew that she and Noctis wrote to each other often, and he knew how broken up his friend had been after she’d died. She’d been a good person who hadn’t deserved what happened to her.
”Maybe you could find a healer? Somebody who’s really good at holy stuff? I don’t know if anybody like that exists around here, but maybe…”
Prompto also wasn’t too well-read on religion. Or history. Or medicine. Or…
But he knew about the Scourge. No kid coming out of high school could graduate without knowing a lot about the Scourge. Even a kid with a straight C report card.
”Is there anything you can think of, Noct? Cause I really don’t know…”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] Prompto offered up his autocrossbow for the distraction, and Caius immediately said he’d take it. He was probably the obvious choice since he wanted to stay at a distance and he had some experience with guns. Still, shooting up the gate felt like more of a risk than Caius had initially wanted to take on. “You sure?” Noctis asked, looking over at the kingsglaive to make absolutely sure he was cool with that. He’d offered, but it didn’t hurt to double-check. “I know you can warp, but that will get a lot of people on your trail. As long as you can give them the slip and make it back to Cindy though…” Then it could work. Noct would still worry about him though. Hell, he was worried about all of them in this plan. If it was anyone other than Ignis and Gladio, he would never have asked his friends to risk themselves like this.
In response to his brief quip about summoning one of the astrals, Prompto asked if that meant he couldn’t do that here. Noctis hesitated before shaking his head. “I don’t think so at least. Hard to tell when they always just showed up when they wanted to, but I haven’t felt them at all.” He wasn’t sure if that was because he was so far away from their power or because they didn’t have a use for him now that he was on Zephon. He couldn’t pretend that he wouldn’t be pretty resentful if it was the second, but now wasn’t the time to think about the gods.
Caius and Prompto started a debate about Sonoran tech and what would be best to fool their scanners and cameras. Noctis mostly just looked back and forth between them as they kept going. Honestly, technology had never been his strongest point. He’d had a phone and a computer and he knew how to play video games on them, and that was good enough for him. “Peripheral vision.” he at least added helpfully when his friend struggled for the right word about being able to see out of the corner of your eye during a fight. “Which is fair for us and Alex since we’re going inside. We won’t want anything obstructing our vision. Why don’t we just cut the eyeholes bigger until they don’t bother us and then paint around our eyes? Save some time.” Compromise. Plus it was so cold in Sonora that they might appreciate the partial covering once they got going.
Caius finished up his drink and left some money on the table for Tifa, so Noctis dug for his gil to follow suit. Caius’ final words stopped him short though.
“The starscourge-...You’re saying Ardyn’s here? That dropped a cold pit into his stomach that had nothing to do with the jail break they were about to attempt.
Come back soon. I will keep your friends company until you do.
Noctis bit his tongue and tried to focus on what Caius was saying. The scourge had…combined with something else and was threatening someone that the kingsglaive was close to. He hadn’t mentioned a Lumina to the prince yet, but he could tell from how quiet the blond man got that she must have been really important to him.
“...Yeah. We can definitely talk later,” Noctis said, twisting the ring of the Lucii a little anxiously around his finger. Prompto mentioning Luna didn’t really help his nerves, even though she was the obvious person to bring up at a time like this. “The scourge does usually take an Oracle to cure, but white magic didn’t really exist on Eos like it does here, you know? We might be able to find someone who can do something similar to what Luna could do…” He hesitated for a moment, remembering the story that Ardyn had fed him while he had been sucked into the crystal. He had zero trust in that monster’s word, but from the look on his face, he had a feeling that it was the most honest that the red-haired man had ever been with him. “Ardyn was no Oracle, but he could cure it. I think he had to take the scourge into himself though.” Come to think of it, that might have been news to Prompto since he'd been putting off telling him what had happened once they'd been separated in Gralea. Maybe this was a bad time to have this conversation.

The Dragonblade
Caius nodded simply as Prompto voiced his objection and Noctis gave a compromise. A compromise would do. “What gets the job done will suffice for me, Highness. But do not underestimate Sonora’s forces. Or their paranoid obsession with locking up every offworlder they can find.”
He understood his suggested method wasn’t perfect. It had been put together on a whim when Caius realized they were potentially in danger with the technology that the Sonorans possessed. If Noctis and Prompto could find a better way, all the better.
Noctis, of course, worried for his own safety. “I’ve escaped more dangerous foes since I was young, without your power. I’ll manage” Caius did his best to assure Noctis then. He had already begun trying to think of how to best plot his escape… And he did have some ideas.
“Aye. I ran into him here in Sonora a long ways back. Though I figured you knew already, since we can sense the crystal’s presence in individuals. It is how His Highness found me” Caius brought up when Noctis and Prompto seemed surprised at the reveal that Ardyn was here. He had just figured the parasite would be a surprise, but there was more to it than that. “He later attacked Provo, and infected a hospital full of people while one of the Dragonblades were trying to fight him off. We started tracking him, but after that he went off the grid. We’re not sure where he is now.”
But the responses of Noctis and Prompto created the biggest pit of all in Caius’ stomach as the color left his face. His eyes shrunk as it sunk in that they were saying Noctis couldn’t do it. Didn’t have the foggiest idea they ever even could have.
“Bullshit,” came out in a low growl as Caius’ eyes set dead on the Prince. His tone somewhere between extremely upset and even a bit angry. “You wiped it out. It was gone. Not a trace left in Eos, and you expect me to believe that-“
He stopped. Maybe it had been the strong drink mixed with strong feelings that had done this, but something finally clicked in his head that he was doing wrong here. The kingsglaive let out a long, remorseful, exasperated sigh as he covered his face with his hand.
“I… No. I forget, you wouldn’t have learned yet. And…”
He took a deep breath, as he wiped his eyes before he was willing to uncover them and face Noctis again. He had calmed down, but Noctis could easily see by the look he’d had before just what was going on.
Caius was desperate. He really didn’t believe there were many options and time was growing short.
Steadily, he settled himself as he bowed respectfully, chewing the inside of his mouth in shame for the outburst.
“You have my sincerest apologies, Your Highness. It was wrong of me to act that way. I…”
Another breath. Another moment to relax, collect himself. Consider the information given.
“… Our options are few and she’s running out of time. I only found out shortly before I left home. I’ve yet to meet a mage that’s been able to cure those infected so far.”
And he had been hedging his bets on Noctis, the Hero King. The one who had blotted out the scourge entirely. But this wasn’t him. Not yet. And he might not learn it until it was too late. Which meant Caius had to redouble his search for some who could.
“We will discuss this when next comes an opportunity. Your friends come first” he spoke then, knowing what this meeting was for. Caius motioned towards the door. “I should… Get some air and regain my bearings. When the time comes, only call on me.”
He placed a hand on his heart. “I will be there, and I will ensure those you call family walk free.”

I can't choose where I came from, but I can choose where I'm going
[attr=class,lyric1]gonna keep on keeping on the only
[attr=class,lyric2]way i know how
[attr=class, bulk] Prompto was only a little disappointed that he couldn’t show off his super cool off-the-grid rebel painting skills, but only a little. He still thought that his way was better and he still didn’t like the idea of going in looking like a bank robber (plus a mask like that would totally flatten his hair and he spent ages gelling it right), but it was Noctis’ choice so Prompto just shrugged and said, ”Yeah. Guess that works,” even though he felt a little prickly that Caius got to be cool and capable and they were listening to him about tech which was totally Prompto’s thing.
But it didn’t matter so much, really. Not compared to what came next.
”Huh?”
Prompto’s voice went up an octave as Noctis made the connection that Prompto hadn’t. If the Starscourge was here then that meant…
”No. No way.” Prompto’s mouth felt dry. That hot feeling from the whiskey came back and swirled around nauseously. ”He’s…?”
Yuna had seen him too. He remembered that from up on the ferris wheel. How she’d told him the story and it had felt like the floor had fallen out from under him and he was falling straight through. But that had been ages ago, she’d said. He couldn’t still be…?
”I, um. Heard from somebody that saw him too,” he muttered, glancing away. ”I just didn’t think…”
He didn’t think. That was his problem. It was always his problem. Because right after that, he’d seen Ignis and Gladio and he hadn’t let himself dwell on the very real possibility that Ardyn could be anywhere and he’d never even know the difference.
He didn’t like hearing his name. He didn’t like talking about him. He didn’t like hearing about him. He didn’t like learning more about him either, but something that Noctis said struck through the sudden ringing in his ears anyway, and Prompto frowned, glancing at his friend. ”Wait, really?”
Ardyn could cure the Starscourge? That was…new.
He might have asked more about it if Caius hadn’t gone on the attack a second later.
”Bullshit.” Caius’ expression changed. It really changed. His eyes were set on Noctis like he wanted to strangle him. ”You wiped it out. It was gone. Not a trace left in Eos, and you expect me to believe that-!”
”H-hey!”
Prompto didn’t know what was happening. One second they’d been talking about Ardyn and then the next Caius was picking fights. What he’d said didn’t even really hit when he was saying it in that tone, glaring at Noct like he’d done something wrong. Even Caius seemed to realize that he was out of line when he quickly sighed and bowed his head, apologizing.
What was with people exploding on them today? Prompto looked between Caius and Noctis uncertainly, not really sure what to say.
He was starting to think there was a reason they didn’t have more friends. When Noctis was the prince of Lucis and was going to be king one day with all the cool powers and responsibilities and everything that came with it, it led to people thinking he could do just about anything and that he should do it for them. It made people want to use him. It made them mad when they couldn’t.
”Yeah, well, Noct’s not an Oracle. It’s not his fault.” Prompto watched Caius cautiously even as he admitted his mistake and promised to help. After he’d seen that dark look in his eye, he wasn’t sure he could trust him as much as he’d thought he could. ”We’ve got a plan. That means we’re done here, right?”
Prompto gave Noctis a purposeful look and grabbed his arm. He knew how Noctis could get when the weight of expectation was thrown at him. Sometimes, he needed somebody to guide him away from it so he didn’t think too hard and start blaming himself. ”Come on, Noct. Let’s get outta here.”
[attr=class,lyric1]i am noctis, prince of lucis and
[attr=class,lyric2]king of fishing
[attr=class, bulk] His father had once told Noctis when they were sitting around the dinner table that a compromise left absolutely no one happy. It felt like he was seeing that in action now as Caius and Prompto reluctantly stopped their technology argument. Knowing Prompto, his best friend was super excited to paint his face and he’d probably bring it up in private again later, but Noct would cross that bridge when it happened. At the end of the day, they just didn’t want their real faces on camera. Maybe it didn’t matter so much how they individually accomplished that.
Caius also reassured him that he was used to escaping dangerous situations, so Noctis dipped his head in acceptance. “Alright. I trust you.” If the kingsglaive thought that he could shoot up the entrance and escape, then they’d just have to rely on that. It didn’t mean he loved how dangerous the plan was though. Then again, he should probably worry more about the three of them actually going inside the prison.
Hearing the news that Ardyn had been spotted in Zephon and was spreading the starscourge around a hospital was hard to swallow. It was even worse that the infection had spread to someone that Caius clearly cared a lot about. Noctis had thought that his and Prompto’s advice had been pretty sound, but it clearly wasn’t what the kingsglaive had been looking for as he suddenly rounded on the prince.
Noctis felt himself freeze in place as he took in what Caius was saying to him. He’d already wiped out the starscourge on Eos, so it was bullshit to say that he couldn’t do it here. “I didn’t-...” He started, but he wasn’t quite sure how to finish that.
I never did that.
That wasn’t me.
How am I supposed to save everyone when I can’t even save my friends?
Caius seemed to quickly realize his mistake though as he suddenly looked tired and gave a sincere apology. Your Highness. He’d had the title his entire life, but he’d never been more aware that it wasn’t what the people around him needed. They needed a Lucian king, and he just wasn’t up to the task yet.
Prompto jumped to his defense, but Noctis shook his head in an attempt to show that it was okay. “You’re just worried, I get it. And I do want to help her if I can. We should talk when this is all over.” Ignis had always spent way more time in the citadel’s archives than Noct had. Maybe he’d know more about the prophecy and how Noct might go about purging the scourge. Or maybe the prince was just grasping at straws. Hadn’t Caius said that he’d spent ten years in the crystal before he’d defeated Ardyn? Everything felt incredibly hopeless, but Caius was standing up to leave, so Noctis did his best to force a smile at the kingsglaive’s promise that he’d help free Ignis and Gladio. “Thank you. Seriously.”
Prompto grasped his arm and said that they should leave too. Noctis glanced up at him and immediately recognized the look on his face. He saw it more from the other two, but at this point his best friend wasn’t so new at being a crownsguard anymore. Noct was being extracted. He must have looked pretty bad for Prompto to initiate that, so even though he bit his tongue a little, he didn’t fight it and let himself be hauled to his feet. “Sure.” He looked at Cindy and Alex and made sure to thank them too before he left. “We’ll be in touch, guys. Really appreciate you both stepping in.” Looking towards the bar, he waved at Tifa too to show that they were leaving. Hopefully the sizable tip he was leaving covered any extra stress that she’d gone through tonight.
As he and Prompto pulled on their coats and shuffled back into the cold, Noctis should have been focused on Ignis and Gladio. Instead his mind was on Ardyn, but he didn’t dare voice his thoughts out loud to Prompto. He knew what the blond man would say, and it still wouldn’t change his mind. He knew what he had to do to help Lumina and others like her.
