The Dragonblades
After the incident in Provo, Caius had gone back to Torensten in order to handle paperwork for their time in Provo, and to continue helping Torensten rebuild after the Kraken attack. Torensten was more than a little bit used to being attacked, but the Kraken was far more devastating than anything that had hit it since the dragons had descended from the skies and laid waste to the city all those years ago. But now Torensten was starting to see something resembling normalcy again, at least until the next time it was attacked. Celes had confessed to needing a break in order to find herself and her... Center, so to speak. While it was uncler just what was driving her, Caius was happy to help in what ways he could in order to ensure things would be in order so Celes could take her break and find her happiness. Training an intern when it came to the paperwork, Caius had found himself staying in Torensten most of the time, only taking small trips to Provo here and there for work. Since then, Caius had helped with the paperwork best he could while training Tomoe, finding out the hard way that Celes had... Well, a natural talent for management, to say the least. It took the both of them combined to get anywhere near the amount of work that Celes had been doing on her own.
So he had done his best. Training Tomoe to help ease the load, and had sent a letter suggesting that perhaps a second should be brought in if they were to get back to a regular workload while allowing Celes and Caius more flexibility to leave for work and otherwise as needed. But this wasn't the only thing Caius had found himself dealing with in the time since. Two young upstarts had joined the guild, named Nick and Yuffie. Nick was woefully inexperienced, while Yuffie was... Well, a well-intentioned headache and a problem just waiting to happen, to say the least. His facial hair had only just started to grow back!
Then there was Maria. Celes' doppelganger. That had been... Interesting, and he knew he was likely going to have to keep an eye on her until Celes returned to try and preserve the General's good name. Once she came back, he was sure she would figure out a more permanent way to handle that, but for now, that was his job. Then there were the reports he was getting about the Original Sin. They were small notes, little things, but they all seemed interconnected... They were corresponding for something. But what?
And of course, around the time she had left, Celes had stopped to handle some last minute business while Caius had been off in Provo -- the workhorse she was. Apparently Torensten's brass wanted a statue... Of him? That was... Well, honestly he didn't know what to think of that. Celes had left details with Tomoe on it, and while Caius was honored that he had done enough for the people of Torensten to merit such recognition... It was a bit terrifying too. He wasn't sure if he liked THAT kind of recognition. The Dragonblades were a group, he hadn't done this on his own. And having his body made statue and put in a square meant to honor heroes of yore was... Well, it was a little awkward. He had been approached to confirm more details about the statues, but to be honest, Celes had better eye for detail on this stuff than he did. He had never really been an art guy. Never had time. And there wasn't a whole lot of art when everything was dead for most of your life.
Between all this and taking over Celes' job to train the recruits, Caius had been busy to say the least. But Celes had left a letter noting that somebody would be coming in to speak to him, who she had dealt with recently. She seemed a bit suspicious of this Astos, but their job was to help people and so she had directed him to the Rest.
The Wyvern's Rest was a bit small. The first floor was just a single large room with walls separating the different parts of it. The entryway was mainly just a desk with a young woman minding it. The next was a lounge, complete with a fireplace, chairs, and a place to grab food and drink. There were places that led to where one could use facilities, store equipment and cook, but they were still adjacent. Upstairs though, led to many different small rooms. All for housing the mercenaries who stayed here, as well as a few bathrooms more facilities to ensure that everyone was well-taken care of.
It wasn't the most glamorous. But it was home.
With Tomoe taking the day off, Caius had taken it upon himself to man the front desk for today. Visibly wearing just a blue buttoned-up shirt instead of armor, he likely didn't look the part of a renowned mercenary. But it was too hot to wear the armor all the time when it wasn't needed. He would be trying his best to get as much work done as he could today when he heard the door.
I'm the same as you, I have nothing I am empty too in the right way We don't care that no one will miss us We don't need their blame or forgiveness
Astos' waited. Celes had given him the address to the Wyvern's Rest, but he needed to do his research first. Caius Dragelion. A name and one point of view from someone far too close to see objectivity was not enough for him. To be a hero requires villains to be slain after all. He knew of the man slaying the Lich and the Kraken, and with a bit of moving in the shadowy parts of the city and the passing of some coin he came to learn of his killing of a few high profile members of a league of fortune seekers with rather scrupulous means. So the man had spilled his fellow man's blood. A good mental note if Astos should need it he thought.
Astos took to his walk that afternoon with a lazed pace. Although he had been a couple of days at that point, the people seemed to still give him a wide berth, nothing that particularly bothered him, but it was a bit disappointing to see mankind seemed to be the same everywhere. So fearful of things that stood out. Thankfully he didn't need to ask for directions as the coming of a storm had most of the denizens scurrying into buildings and under awnings. The first sprinkling of rain, and Astos stopped as he felt the drops his his palm. When was the last time he had felt the rain? He closed his eyes for a moment before continuing on. There was no time to simply be. There never was.
Astos knew he had found the right place as the sign swung in the light wind that was began to pick up as the roar of thunder threatened much and more. Astos cracked his neck before entering the guild. Plain was a good word for what he saw. All he could see intirially was a man at the desk to whom Astos did not give his attention. Instead he began to walk the room looking at the mostly barren walls before peeking into the adjoining rooms. He peered into the lounge where the fireplace lay unlit and not a soul to be found and then peered down the hallway before shrugging throwing his wrist up with a soft twirl.
"Rather quaint for a hero's guild whose founder fell the fearsome Kraken," Astos commented more to the room as a whole than to the man at the desk. "But to be fair, humble quarters do suit the man I was told about." Finally, he turned to study the man at the desk. He looked simple enough, but he knew full well looks could be deceiving. He smiled, although it appeared more as a smirk, at the man even if it didn't quite reach his eyes. "My my, where are my manners. I am Astos. I met with Celes, and she told me to come here to speak with the fearsome slayer of the Lich. A hero named Caius. Mayhaps you would be the very same warrior?" He waited to see what this man would do. Would he attack the scary bad thing that had entered his den or would he be civil? Who could ever tell with heroes.

The Dragonblades
Caius rubbed his eyes sleepily as he heard the door. Sheesh, he was falling asleep here. How did Celes manage to handle this paperwork for hours upon hours at the rate she did? The lass was a miracle worker, he swore. And he had ensured she had received a very flowery letter that made this fact very clear. Either Celes returning or there being another secretary hired that could do the work couldn't come soon enough, because he was really not suited to the desk at all. If he was to guess though, the door was some of the mercenaries coming back from assignments or from a round of drinks. Some had invited him out earlier, but he had decided to decline this time around in order to get the work done.
But it wasn't them at all. In fact, he didn't recognize the strange man with skin that reminded him of the dead, pointed ears and overly flashy garb that told of a man who was probably compensating. Caius blinked a few times as the man ignored him and began walking around... Monologuing to himself? Oh for the love of Shiva, please Astrals why did he have to start a monologue? It was a harsh reminder of that other certain monologuing guy, and Caius had been harboring a strong desire to put a bullet in their head for close to two years now. Caius knew he talked a lot, but usually there was a point, and this guy was straight up talking to himself!
But there was something to him that made him feel dangerous. It wasn't his looks, per se. Caius had met everything from skeleton men to Tonberries, who had at least been somewhat friendly. No, this man had an aura to him that put Caius on edge. But the mercenary kept his calm, keeping that sleepy expression for a little bit longer as the man who really liked hearing their own voice would finally turn and ask if he was Caius. Astos, he called himself. The mercenary slowly rose, stretching out a moment as he stepped out from the desk.
"Aye. My name is Caius. It is good to meet you, Astos" he spoke with a polite half-bow. Thinking about it, Celes had sent a missive about someone to watch out for, hadn't she?
I'm the same as you, I have nothing I am empty too in the right way We don't care that no one will miss us We don't need their blame or forgiveness
Astos returned the bow in kind keeping his smile fixed. "Ah," he began as he righted himself, "A much warmer introduction than I would have guessed after the one your dear friend gave." He gave a small wink before sitting in the chair in front of the desk. He glanced over all the strewn about papers and pamphlets and gave a soft tick. "My, my, it seems you've got quite a handful here. Color me surprised. I found you among it all. From how Celes talked such bureaucracy seemed beneath you both, or perhaps too banal." Astos clapped once before leaning back in the chair and crossing his legs. Well, he could read. That was a pleasant plus. Although usually carefully selected, Astos swore that the Lufenians just randomly chose four strangers on a whim to combat the darkness. The most egregious example was when they sent four healers and no one to protect them or fight. Astos shook his head banishing the memory away instead returning his attention to Caius.
"I merely wish to...chat" he said slowly letting the last word drip slowly enveloping the room. "Formalities aside, I'd be surprised if you didn't know what I needed help with." He shifted slightly in the chair cocking his head to the side. "It's my belief it's more than just coincidence that my world and this one were both plagued by The Lich and The Kraken." He stayed his tongue from mentioning Chaos. That was something he needed actual witnesses for, and Celes did not seem like she wanted to open up for that. Not that it mattered, he'd find answers one way or the other.
"The roadblock I've encountered, and the reason I'm reaching out, is that my visage seems to trouble most people." Astos sighed dramatically leaning forward. elbow on the desk placing his chin in it. "That's where you and or your ilk of heroes would come in. Perhaps a kind word to the king's guards for an audience as I'm quite curious about the crystals that power this city or perhaps the location of the two crystals you've saved already." Astos began to draw a circle in the desk with his free hand his nail scratching at the surface slightly. "Of course, I know you're not running a charity. I think I have some...information you'd find most enlightening if you were interested."
He smiled before leaning back in his chair. "But oh my, you know how we dark elves get ahead of ourselves. I'd like to know more of you. A tit for tat if you want." He crossed his arms and gave his cold smile. Time to tell if he was any different than the other heroes he had met.

The Dragonblades
Considering the vibe this guy was giving off, somehow Caius wasn't surprised that he got an icier reception from Celes than usual. Though he supposed this confirms it. This was the guy that Celes was referring to. Fantastic. Caius just loved when shady people walked into his workplace. And he just kept going on with backhanded compliments that Caius was pretty sure were really were more just insults than anything. "Oh, I expected you to be too lazy and up your own arse to do basic things!" essentially said Mr. Corset. But fine, fine, he'd take the... Compliments. With as much patience as he could muster.
Though that little pause before he emphasized "chat", did he do that on purpose? Like, was that purposely for dramatic effect, or was he just naturally off-putting? He did know how to make a first impression, he could say that.
But at least it didn't take too long, longer than he would have liked but still acceptable, before the elf would get to the point. With all the unneeded dramatics of someone who probably didn't get the part he wanted in the school play and just had to get it out of his system somewhere, he claimed that he wasn't getting what he wanted because of how he looked.
"Somehow I don't think your looks are the problem. People here see shows hosted by a giant Tonberry" the mercenary spoke dryly in turn. "If it makes you feel any better, I think there are many people that would find a boyish visage and uniquely pointed ears physically appealing. I wouldn't say the "fresh-faced" look is my type, but it's bound to be somebody's."
Humor coping, works everytime. So the question was, what exactly puts people off? Well, one of likely several reasons presented itself as the man immediately essentially tried to bribe him with vague, unknown information to get an audience with the king when Caius had no idea who he was, any thought as to if he could trust him around the king, and this dude really thought the Dragonblades would use their influence in that way. The crystals thing was also another red flag.
"More of you know?" Caius echoed with a series of confused blinks, not really understanding the gist of that. "Regardless. As for your offer... To be truthful with you. The offer is appreciated, but I don't think the guards will listen to a request for a complete stranger to waltz in, see the King and the crystals. Not from me, or well, just about anyone really"
Caius wasn't a good enough liar to try even if he wanted to.
"Torensten does however, have a museum and library with resources available to you there. It's not a problem if you didn't know, Torensten's a massive city. I should have a spare map here if you need it."
