The Dragonblades
“Celes,
I hope this letter finds you well and in good health. And that your journey has been more exciting than my own. It is peaceful here, or as peaceful as it gets in Torensten. The people have rebuilt and regained their cheer as though the Kraken were a bad dream. Tomoe has learned quickly, and I have been able to make trips a bit further out here and there. We may, though, need to consider a second intern to cover more ground due to Tomoe’s hours. As we have also quickly learned, the amount of work you managed on a regular basis was incredible, something we grow to appreciate more by the day. I’ve done my best to help out when I am in town, though I do not think either of us combined is matching what you managed.
On a more personal note. This may be a strange question for a letter, but I feel the need to ask. Do you happen to have any relatives siblings? Recently, I had the unique experience of meeting a woman in town who is near your mirror in face and voice. Unfortunately, she did not share your sense of tact, for I stumbled upon her screaming at the proprietor of an eatery who had removed her for wearing perfume so strong it could potentially knock out a Behemoth at close enough range. Vordun was thankfully not with me, I do not wish to imagine the events of his sneezing around someone that smelled very flammable.
As for the young lady, I took it upon myself to reduce temporarily delay the potential problems of your lookalike being removed from every indoor establishment in town by escorting her to an outdoor eatery. There, I learned she went by Maria Nightingale, an apparently famous opera singer who has journeyed from Sonora to here and already established herself in Torensten’s theatre industry. She is an interesting personality, one I am not sure how to describe in written words. Despite a clear clash of personalities though, I was kindly invited to her next show due to my relative inexperience with opera. The show in of itself was an experience. I do not know how your stamina, or your breath, held out during your own performance. I found myself needing to breathe deeply just by spectating.
I sincerely hope that your journey has been every bit as fulfilling as you wished it to be. You deserve every bit of your time away, and to find what it is you are looking for. The outdoor establishment I visited is of good quality, and the garden is beautiful. Perhaps I will treat you sometime when you return. Your call on dress code.
May the Astrals fly at your back on your journey, and carry your return to us safely.
Sincerely, Caius, The Dragonblades”

Caius,
I have no idea how it took your letter this long to reach me. I think it might have been trapped in an international post office at the border for a few months, and then we had a snow storm last week that might have delayed it longer. Did you have any idea how cold it can get in Provo? I’ve spent so long in the tropics that I almost forgot what it’s like to see snow. I know it’s almost always snowing in Sonora, but quite frankly, I hate it there as much as they’d hate me being there. It reminds me a little too much of home.
All of that aside, I’m glad you’re doing well. I’m sure that you’ve had months worth of experiences since you last wrote your letter so I’m assuming that you’re still doing well. I haven’t heard anything about the Dragonblades collapsing at any rate. I’m glad that you’ve figured out business without me. Truly.
As for me, I’ve been more busy here than I ever was at the Wyvern’s Rest. I won’t sugarcoat this. Yuna needs help. I walked into her clinic to find her downing ethers trying to save a dying man while six more people waited in the lobby. I’ve hardly had a minute to myself just working as her assistant. I have no idea why she didn’t ask us to send support. Yuna likes to take the world on her shoulders, it seems, and she’s not one to complain about it. She’s also a saint who refuses to charge anyone for more than the basic service. Which makes hiring help more difficult.
But it needs to be done. I’m going to start posting job requests for white mages, nurses, medics, and any other position I can think of. If I get enough interest, I’ll pay them through my own mercenary work. After that, we might need to funnel some of our earnings from the Wyvern’s Rest into Yuna’s clinic. I know we don’t have the finances to fund an entire clinic, but I left notes for just this sort of occasion. If you look at the ledger, I marked a few of our lower performing mercenaries. If their work hasn’t improved, you have my blessing to let them go for the sake of our profits.
It seems cruel, but they were costing us more than they were making. That’s all well and good when our mission statement involves raising a militia for the sake of Torensten’s defense, but if we want to keep going like this then something has to change. Either Yuna needs to start charging enough to pay people to help her or we need to change our priorities to fund her charitable mission. Which do you think is more likely to happen?
Which leads me to my next thought. Torensten has us. It has the king’s army. It has every adventurer within a six mile radius to help if disaster strikes. What does Provo have? Provo has seen its share of problems, but nothing on the scale that we’ve seen down south, and quite honestly, I don’t think they’d be prepared for it. They don’t have a large enough government capable of addressing an evacuation or relief fund. There are adventurers here obviously, but not nearly on the scale of Torensten, and the only mercenary group I’ve seen is our own pale imitation.
Have you heard of the Rising Stones? More importantly, have you met its leader, Alexander Sorel? I was caught up in the countryside on the way to Provo by some ridiculous scheme of his to save some troubled griffins. He has a grudge against the Dragonblades because he claims we’re stealing his business. More importantly, he has a grudge against you personally, and I didn’t get the impression that he was bluffing. Did you really steal his dog? He seemed quite hung up on that.
He also might potentially kill King Hremit and frame you. He was drinking heavily when he said it, but I’d keep an eye out. I’d also keep an eye out for him barging into the Wyvern’s Rest looking for a fight. We took down a behemoth together. He’s no pushover. And he really, really wants his dog back.
I’ll keep watch over his operations on my end. The Rising Stones is only a few blocks away so it shouldn’t be difficult. If against all odds it turns out to be an honorable organization, maybe we could consider partnering with them. I know. I hate the idea too, but Provo needs better defenses, and we’re stretched thin enough as it is. I’ll let you know if I find any signs that Sorel might be scheming something against you. I’ll come by airship even since that seems like a faster way to get a message across than this joke of a postage system.
Finally, there’s the matter of Maria. Are you sure that you wrote that right? Maria? The opera singer? Who looks like me to the letter? If so, I’ve never heard of a greater coincidence in my life.
I’ve told you about the incident with me and the opera house, but I don’t think I’ve ever gone into detail about it. Now seems like as good a time as any to change that.
I was with the Returners at the time, and we found ourselves in desperate need of an airship. It was the only way to reach Vector, the capital of the Geystahlian Empire. Unfortunately, the empire was in possession of nearly every airship in the world except one which was piloted by a madman with a gambling addiction. Said gambler was a recluse, and we had no hope of an audience with him, but fortune turned in our favor when we visited the opera house in Jidoor.
The pilot, as it happened, was obsessed with the opera’s lead singer, Maria. He’d been stalking her for some time, and had even sent letters promising to kidnap her on stage during her performance so that he could force her into marriage. That was when all eyes turned to me. By the mother of all coincidences (except maybe you running into her now), I happened to be a dead-ringer for Maria. This coincidence benefited everyone but me. The opera house could keep their performance schedule without threatening the life of their lead diva. The Returners had an idea on how to get an audience with the airship pilot, and all I had to do was get on stage in front of hundreds of people, sing as though I had any opera training whatsoever, and allow myself to get kidnapped.
A perfect plan, wasn’t it?
I think I only went along with it because if worse came to worst, I’d be more capable of escaping a forced marriage plot than that poor opera singer. The plan went off perfectly except that once I was aboard the airship alone and unarmed, the pilot decided that I was an even more perfect bride than Maria. Knowing that he couldn’t resist a gamble, I made a bet with him. I’d toss a coin. If it landed heads, he’d take us to Vector. If it landed tails, I’d marry him. It was a double-headed coin. He appreciated my tenacity and joined the Returners in full.
We got along fairly well after that. Though I never quite forgot that he had a history of abducting women.
Ask Maria if she worked in Jidoor and if the name Setzer Gabbiani means anything to her. She might have forgotten the whole ordeal with Setzer if she came through with amnesia, but surely she’d remember her time in the opera house if she’s still singing. I really can’t believe she’s here. Of all the people I knew in my time in the Returners, I certainly never would have thought I’d run into Maria the opera singer first, but here we are.
I hope you’re doing well. If you need me, just send the word and I’ll be there in a heartbeat.

Cel,
It is good to know you are well after all this time. I know that you are more than capable of handling yourself, but I did worry.
Affairs here are good. New recruits are spirited. Perhaps a bit too spirited. They go by Nick, Cassandra, Yuffie, Serah and Iris. They are a lot. But they have good hearts. Something called an “artificial intelligence” shipped itself to the Rest. They claim to be an otherworldly AI that has found itself inside the server in a school in Sonora. It has asked to station itself in the Rest and peddle a “therapy” service to our members for a fee. After ensuring the terminal wasn’t armed, I have sent some of the more technologically gifted members from our Sonora unit to investigate the source before proceeding. I do not know your technological expertise, but your input on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
I would also like your input on adding additional staff to our administration. Tomoe is coming along well. Her partner Yuki has been helping her out as well, and it occurred to me that the two of us could better afford to travel with confidence that affairs on the homefront are secure if we invested in that area. Though doing so will likely come with the expense of needing to expand the Rest, for those who do not have a place to sleep. We can more than afford it, but we should discuss whether it is needed. Truthfully, I think this has been an inevitable expense since the Kraken incident drastically increased our visibility, and will end up being needed regardless of administrative staff decisions.
That post office ordeal is a problem, I agree. Fortunately, my time spent in Torensten has given me an opportunity to see its capabilities in ways I could not while traveling as often as I was. I chanced upon a crystal that allows for instant communication between bearers, similar to an invention that existed back home. Fueling itself on the magicks in the air, simply touching the crystal and projecting thoughts of another who bears one will establish a link through the crystals. This allows either a conversation in real time, or to send a message.
I have purchased and tested a set, and enclosed the second with this letter. Unfortunately, the price is a touch too high to make them standard issue at present. I used my own wages for these instead. Paying back for yours is unneeded, I do not want for much. I hope that crystal serves you well.
I had a feeling when I first saw that clinic that Yuna would burn the candle at both ends. It is unfortunate that she has gone this long without asking for help, but it is very much like her to do so. I agree we should help. I do not like the idea of cutting people loose, it feels almost dishonorable. But I will take it under consideration and consult the list you have provided. I do not think it will be enough to fund the clinic in the long term, however.
That leads to my next thought. I agree with your thoughts about Provo. I think we should establish a proper base of operations in Provo that can serve for those that live in the area and allow us to better operate there. Torensten is full of adventurers, but many otherworlders are put off by Torensten’s lack of “traditional” technology, while Sonora is- deplorable creepy barely inhabitable corrupt really cold Sonora. Making Provo a potentially untapped wellspring for recruits. If we were to establish there, extra funds from the Provo branch could be used to help the clinic, and you would have a better chance of finding magically gifted people willing to help. Both in the clinic, and in Provo’s defense on account of your presence there.
If you choose to do so, I think there is no one more capable in our organization of leading the efforts for Provo’s defense than you. You are a strong, resourceful and proven leader. While I would miss seeing you here, you are by far the best choice for pulling this off.
I also think Yuna may have potential as a leader down the line, but her clinic is her priority right now with its present struggles.
Of course, starting a base would be quite the expense. If not for our need to allocate funds to the clinic, I would say we have more than enough in our coffers to fund it safely. However, a recent coincidence may be our answer. Do you remember that old manor we received the deed to after defeating that monster lurking inside a few years ago? I recently received a letter from a gentleman that claims to be interested in old historical properties, and he has offered a very large sum of gil for the manor.
A sum is included in the letter.
I know we discussed using it as a base down the line, but truthfully the manor is too far from town, and repair costs would be more expensive than just building a new, smaller base in Provo. What he is offering is far more than what we would get from selling it elsewhere as well. I think our best bet is to sell the property to the collector, and use the funds to expand the clinic into a full base of operations for the Dragonblades in Provo, if Yuna gives her blessing. We would likely still have funds to spare from the transaction as well, and that could go either towards paying for boarding new mercenaries, or the clinic. If she wishes them separate we should still be able to afford a property nearby. But I think potentially having magic-using members on hand in the case of an emergency at the clinic would be good.
Personal Note: I have never had to consider expenses on this scale in my life. I do not know how you make it look so easy. Luckily Tomoe and Yuki were born here, and have an incredible understanding of Zephon’s economy. Their aid in projecting said financial margins has been indispensable.
I am aware of Sorel and his Stones, as well as the strange drunken rumor he has cast to the winds. I was once asked on the street if it is true that I am a “homewrecker.”
Claire had to explain what that word means.
I did nothing to offend him. Cassandra came to our door asking to join. She did not say what organization she came from, but indicated a friend of hers kept getting her into trouble. I found out only later she had a dog. King Noctis — the equivalent here that I mentioned is a decade younger — appears to be part of these Rising Stones and has promised to sort matters out with Sorel. If he can do so, I think an alliance is plausible for Provo’s sake.
Your story about Maria sounds almost unbelievable, but it is nice to finally know what that opera story was about. I will also be sure not to gamble against you in the future. Are you sure you do not have a sibling? I can tell you two apart from the overwhelming smell of her behemoth-killing perfume alone, but the resemblance is unsettling in its accuracy. I will inquire with her about Setzer and Jidoor as you requested.
On the subject of your Returners, there is another matter that merits your attention. A woman with green hair that goes by the name Terra claims to be a friend of yours. She wishes to join the Dragonblades and be reunited with you when you next return to Torensten. The kicker, though, is that she has apparently been in Zephon for around three to four years. She claims to have previously lost control of her “Esper” form, and hid from you in order to keep you from harm while she worked to control it. She claims it is now under control. Considering these circumstances, I did not think it neither fair to you, nor practically beneficial, to act without your input on the matter. If the letter’s arrival takes too long beyond fairness to Terra, I will ask her to accompany myself and Vordun to Provo and settle this in person.
After gathering more information, I would like to add persons "Sephiroth" and "Emet Selch" to our watch list. Enclosed with this letter are physical descriptions and data. I am preparing to eventually make my way out to Sonora, as much as I personally do not wish to do so. I promised aid to my former King, Noctis, with some trouble he is going through over there. And I have agreed to aid a woman named Garnet, whom claims to be a Queen from the same world as "Kuja", one of our watchlist targets. She claims to be looking for a lead on stopping Kuja, after he laid waste to her home. Data on Kuja has also been updated, with increased threat levels. I hope to do so once affairs have been settled enough for me to leave. I would like to hope that the trip will not be longer than a week, but there are no guarantees.
On the next page of this letter are accounts of a more personal nature instead of business. These are not a priority, but I thought it fair to keep you in the loop.
The statue finished. It creeps me out.
Following Sephiroth and Cloud's battle in Provo, I met the sisters Claire and Serah after saving the former from monsters attracted by the commotion. They are a unique pair, whom I have grown close with since they moved to Torensten. I had sought to protect them, but by the stories and seeing Serah help take down a Behemoth that grew too close to town, it is clear they do not need it. They have been through much, having been forced to serve a corrupt deity, travel through time, and live through several hundred years without the passage of time. The younger sister(?) Claire is stranger yet. She was at the center of these events, yet while she seems to have some recollection of them, the Claire that has been sent to this world is far younger than the one depicted in said stories. Not to mention the fact that there is a third "sister", Lumina, whom was apparently a part of Claire that was split away, was later reunited, and then somehow gained their own independence and body here in Zephon. The entire story is beyond strange, but I sense no deceit.
Claire however has taken a shine to me, and insists on setting me up on blind dates. Several of them. It has been very awkward. Attempting to say no has so far proved fruitless. Perhaps it is because she reminds me far too much of my younger sister. She is just as innocent and mischievous. It is difficult to explain, but since the evening we spent at the garden, memories that were once hazy or completely gone have begun to return. For one reason or another, the return of these memories has since made easing into life within Torensten more amiable.
I received a letter from the office of King Hremit. I was asked to "resign" as a mercenary in a sense. And join the King's honor guard. They were looking for candidates to one day succeed their military commander, and thought I would be suitable. I gave it a bit of thought, but while it was greatly flattering I decided that my place is here with the Dragonblades.
In closing, I hope this letter finds you well and in good health. It has been some time since you left, and while your company is missed, I know that you are going where your heart desires. It does not surprise me in the least that you have found yourself busier in work than before, but I hope that somewhere in there you have made time to find the happiness that you sought when you first left on this journey.
If ever you have need of me, I will be there with all speed.

I’m sorry, did you say that Terra is there? In short, yes. You can trust her with the Dragonblades. She’s a tad unreliable, but she’s strong and she has the best heart of anyone I know. I can’t believe she’s been here all this time. I think I met her once years ago, but I thought I was going crazy and I wasn’t emotionally ready to stay with her. And then…
I thought it must have been a dream. But she’s been here all along. I can’t believe it.
I’ll be renting a chocobo and starting the journey to Torensten tomorrow. It’s entirely possible that this letter will be superfluous by the time I arrive, but I wanted to at least try to send it ahead of me as a warning anyway. If Terra is there then I need to see her. I’ve put out the word for Yuna’s clinic so she should be able to screen for potential new hires while I’m gone. I’ll leave the money you’ve enclosed with her.
I’ll see you in a week or two, I suppose. We can talk more then.
Celes
P.S. We will most definitely not be partnering with the Rising Stones. Alexander Sorel found me while I was trying to recruit white mages for Yuna’s clinic and he made a complete ass of himself trying to sabotage the whole affair. He might be the most conceited, childish fool of a man that I’ve ever met and that’s saying something. I refused to engage his ridiculous attempts to bait me into an argument, but once I return to Provo I might just pay the Rising Stones a visit to properly address every absurd accusation he made of both of us. And I will make him regret his harassment of me that day. And he wonders why no one wants to work with him…
Keep away from him if you can. I wouldn’t wish that man on my worst of enemies. He’d likely join them.

The Dragonblade
When Celes arrived in Torensten, she would find that Caius was not present. A letter had been left with Tomoe.
“Cel,
I apologize that I cannot be here to greet you in person, as much as I wanted to. That business in Sonora I mentioned has begun its process, thus I was urgently called in and most likely will not be back before you get here. I will very likely be gone for a few weeks, possibly the month. However, I trust Tomoe, Yuki and the other administrative staff to handle things, and I have asked a few of our more seasoned members to handle training drills in my absence as well. We have built a strong foundation in both our warriors and staff, and I trust them to keep the Dragonblades’ dream going strong in Torensten.
I trust your word on Terra. She has been registered, set up with a room at the Rest and has been informed of your coming.
Her entry does stoke a thought, however. With our amount of high-grade warriors increasing, I would like to work on reinforcing the magical wards in the courtyard, possibly expanding it altogether with more room and better defenses, when we can spare the expenses. To be frank, we have multiple people in our employ potentially capable of fighting on the level of planet-destroyers. We should probably start accommodating for that in training.
I have been actively recruiting for the clinic where I can. Hopefully this will give Yuna room to breathe.
*Something is written in smaller print with someone else’s handwriting, a much neater hand than Caius’, likely from Tomoe: “Make sure she takes proper breaks and drinks lots of water! And you too! Caius forgets. A lot.”
Understood on Sorel. As he is unfortunately affiliated with the younger Noctis through circumstance, it would not surprise me if I encounter him in Sonora. If I do, he will be handled.
I will not stop you from storming the Stones, however.
Lastly, while you are in Torensten, I would appreciate if you could keep tabs on the family of Miss Serah Farron, one of our newer mercenary hires on a part-time basis. Her family visits the Rest regularly and I have grown fond of them. However, some matter of monster parasite has taken hold within the oldest sister, Lumina. She is strong, possibly moreso physically than us both, and can hold it back for the time being. But its attempts to usurp her will, grow stronger. I intend to ask Noctis if his powers can purge it. But for the time being, if you are around when they visit, just keep an eye on her. Lumina, Claire and Serah are important to me, and I do not wish for harm to befall them.
I will visit you and Yuna in Provo as soon as I return. Walk tall, and keep safe. Our enemies have been quiet for too long, and I do not like what that could mean.

The Dragonblade
The Link Crystal that had been delivered to Provo for Celes would begin to flash, indicating something had been left for her. Tapping on it would bring up a visualization within the crystal of Caius, with his hair tied back neatly, and wearing a suit. The kind that would blend into Sonora nicely. However, while he was dressed to the nines, the man himself looked tired, stressed, and just downright miserable. He seemed to be in a cabin of sorts, sitting on a wooden chair.
“Celes, I hope this reaches you well and that you have gotten to Torensten safely. The magic aether in this region is thin in comparison to Torensten, so I will not be able to communicate this way with you too often. Tomoe has been using her own to keep me up to date, however. “
A moogle popped in from the background and rested on Caius’ head while trying to get a look at the crystal, which Caius seemed to allow with a patient sigh.
“To be frank, my work here has been a disaster. Planning for the operation that Noctis has requested of me has been made far more chaotic by the arrival of, you guessed it… Alexander Sorel.”
Caius shook his head at that, loosing a mild groan at just the thought. “So I am going to handle it.”
Ominous, since he did not elaborate further.
“Tomoe tells me that one of our previous problems has solved itself to some extent. Some of the recruits that weren’t progressing, mainly ones that weren’t responding to training well, have taken their things and have not returned. You will likely find your training sessions to be less… Disrespectful, as a result. I did not go much easier on them than you did.”
The slight smile that crossed his complexion indicated this wasn’t exactly a surprise.
“I figured that might happen. After you suggested cutting underperformers, I began monitoring the progress of recruits more thoroughly. I noticed during training that there are some who aren’t performing yet up to the standard we need for the jobs we take, but for differing reasons. Some were obviously just there to profit from our reputation. Their hearts were never in it the way ours are. Their strikes had confidence, but not purpose. When I spoke to them, they did not understand the purpose of our outfit and cared little for the safety of others. The fact they lasted as long as they did under your training regiment was the true surprise to me. But there are also others. They understand why we do what we do, but their combat skills are lacking. I realized while training these recruits that some of them lack self confidence, wanting to do the right thing but constantly doubting themselves.”
The Moogle had at this point fallen asleep on his head. “They respond better to criticism, but I can see how anxious they get when I give it. I tried softening my tone and trying to be more understanding, which seemed to help, but I think their biggest issue is they are putting too much stress on themselves. Unlike the others who underperformed for selfish reasons, I truly do see the makings of warriors in these men and women. But while I feel like I’ve made some headway, my lack of experience in training has left me at a loss for how to help them further. I will brainstorm it while I am here; but perhaps you may find a solution while you are in town. You are far more experienced in this area than I.”
Caius gently took the moogle off his head and placed them on his lap, scratching gently at the pom on their head. However, his expression darkened as a thought came to him. “I ran into Lumina here, and am staying with her… Extended family at a place on the mountains, away from too many people. The outlook isn’t good. Her condition has worsened, and she has chosen to flee Torensten to spare her sisters and isolate. This… Parasite, it has been empowered by the starscourge that our target Ardyn brought to Zephon. She claims the scourge in her parasite has at times begun to spread. As I am resistant to it, I may need to remain in Sonora for awhile longer in order to try and mitigate further spread. Please watch for possible spread of the scourge in Torensten, I will ensure Yuna is informed of this in Provo as well.”
From behind the chair he was sitting on, a young woman, around Caius’ age with pink hair popped up and tried to quietly wrap her arms past Caius from behind to pick up the moogle without disturbing his message. However, she accidentally tripped a bit and bumped into him. Caius initially recoiled at the touch, but seemed to settle down when he saw who it was. The moogle was picked up and carried away, and Caius was silent for a few moments thereafter, a thought seeming to be eating at him. At first he appeared to decide to speak of it. “Off-topic a moment, you mentioned in your own world that you had someone special to you, at one point. At what point did you realize-“
But perhaps not yet. He shook his head and dismissed it for the moment. “Forgive me, it’s not important. There are bigger things to address right now.”
He seemed to wait a moment to ensure that the woman had left before speaking again. “When the parasite decides it has the means to split from Lumina and take form, I intend to make my stand here and slay it. I plan to speak to my contacts here and see what can be done in the meantime, especially when their business will take them out of Sonora for some time when it concludes. If possible, we will separate it from Lumina sooner and destroy it before it can become a threat to Sonora. I will be back when the threat is handled, or if business calls for me to leave a party here and return.”
Caius looked up as someone seemed to call for him. It seemed that was his cue to go. “I sincerely hope you and Terra have been able to catch up and that it has brought you a measure of peace. You have long deserved that. Do not hesitate to call on me if need be. Vordun and I will come as quickly as we can.”
For a moment, the softest smile returned.
“You, the Farrons, and the Dragonblades are my family. With everything that’s happening right now… I wanted to be sure you knew that. All the best to you, and feel free to get in touch with me if you need anything.”
