Garnet had been quite enthusiastic about the Harvest Festival. The last time she had seen a Festival, it had been the Festival of the Hunt in Lindblum, and while it had been an experience for sure, all the trappings of being a princess had meant that she couldn't actually get to explore the town. Not to mention that the actual Festival activity itself was, well, not something that she found exceptionally appealing. But the idea of a regular festival, where nobody knew who she was, and there was plenty to see and do? Well, that was quite different, and she had happily travelled to Provo to check it out.
She had been even more delighted when she had bumped into Caius. They hadn't seen each other for quite some time, but Garnet now knew that this was her chance to really show him her true self. He had met her when she was floundering in her gown, shortly after arriving in Provo, and she had been every part the lost noble. She hadn't had a weapon, and hadn't been dressed practically for the swamp in which she found herself. Now, she was in her more familiar orange jumpsuit and blouse, and carried on her back her staff. She was also more at ease. She probably shouldn't be. Very little had changed since they had last met really. She was still separated from her kingdom and from Zidane, but she was forging a new life here. And besides, she couldn't change anything, so why fret about it?
Maybe she HAD changed a bit. The old Garnet would never have thought like that, she smiled to herself.
However, as joyous as meeting Caius had been, she was regretting their choice of activity, as they walked through the thick corn maze. She had thought it sounded fun, but after some time of walking, and apparently getting nowhere, she was beginning to feel a little restless. "It's not that I don't appreciate the effort that must have gone into growing a maze out of corn," Garnet admitted in a conversational tone as they walked. "But I must admit, I am beginning to wonder what the point of this is. I feel like I haven't seen anything but corn since we entered..." she said. The man hosting the maze had made it sound like a lot of fun. At least, she presumed that was why he was laughing so much. But now, she really wasn't so sure...
"Shall we just go back and find something else?" she suggested, not wanting to miss out on too much of the festival.

The Dragonblades
Caius hadn’t really been to many festivals. He had been a man who thought work first, play never. But meeting the others and forming the Dragonblades had slowly changed the man. Made him slow down a bit, take a look back and see the world that he had risked his life to protect. He had been to a festival once before this. Ironically enough, it was Torensten’s own equivalent to the Festival of the Hunt. A contest that he and Mu had actually been victorious in. Perhaps a story he could tell Garnet one day?
But on a trip to Provo for another kind of festival, Caius would be graciously reunited with an old friend. It had been some time since he had seen the aforementioned Garnet, and he was happy to see that she was doing well. It seemed that the apparent former Queen from another world had done a fine job of settling in on Zephon since her days of trodding around in a swamp with a giant dress. A dress she had ditched for more… Practical attire, thank the gods above. She seemed more comfortable in this wear, he’d noted. Then again, who wouldn’t be?
But what was less comfortable was their choice of activity? Their conversation had been cut short when they found themselves at a dead end and had to turn back. Why the corn maze had seemed fun? Caius honestly had no idea.
“I’m all for that” Caius agreed as he turned away from the corn to walk back through… More corn. “Perhaps to pass the time while we go through this mess, you can tell me a bit about what you’ve been up to since last we met?”

Luckily, Caius agreed with Garnet's suggestion, which she was glad of, and she turned back around just as he did. She was relieved. It wasn't that she didn't want to see the maze, it was just that she didn't want to miss the rest of the festival. Besides, she didn't particularly see the excitement of a maze made out of corn. Maybe after you'd been lost in a dozen labyrinths, including one comprised entirely of your memories and the memories of your friends, corn just seemed a little dull in comparison. "Oh, well, I've largely been working as a White Mage for hire. I've been doing some healing at the local church in exchange for accommodations, and teaming up with adventurers at times," she answered with a smile. "I was actually part of the team responsible for removing the corruption from the water crystal while you battled the Kraken." Not that Garnet minded a lack of fame; if anything, it was refreshing, but she thought it probably said something about human nature that those who had battled the monster had become famous in Torensten while those who had removed the corruption from the crystal were much lesser known, even though it was their actions that had stopped the storm.
"All under the name Dagger, of course," she added with a teasing smile, since she knew Caius had criticised her alias when they first met. Not that she had cause to worry; she'd travelled the world as Dagger. She was much Dagger as she was Garnet, and she didn't care if Caius thought it was a silly name. It did it's job.
"Sadly not everything is as positive as I'd hoped. I've discovered that a very dangerous man from my own world is also here. He... very nearly destroyed my home city, killed my mother, and caused untold harm to my world. I thought that we had defeated him; that he was dead, but now he is in Zephron, and I don't know what he's planning. It's been... stressful..." She admitted.
She turned to him with a shake of her head, trying to forget the bad thoughts. "How about you? What have you been-" and then she paused. "Uh, is it just me, or should we be out of this place by now?" The maze seemed to stretch on forever, but Garnet was sure that they were just recounting their steps. They hadn't walked THAT far into it, had they?

The Dragonblades
The maze had been fun while it lasted, but it was a fleeting novelty and he was curious of what else awaited them. It wasn't often he got to see a festival, after all. He should make the most of the time. He listened as Garnet would regale of her exploits. Working as a white mage for hire, working with adventurers, and she had even been involved in all that business with the Kraken. "That does sound impressive" he admitted with a light smirk when she noted her part in things with the Kraken. It was strange that she and the others who had a part in dealing with the storm hadn't been celebrated as heavily. While it was true that Torensten celebrated warrior and hero culture, he had hoped she at least had received a nice sum for her aid.
He snorted slightly when she quipped she was still going by Dagger. "A much less impractical name when you are away from your homeland, at the very least" he pointed out in a minor quip of his own. Not that it was wrong. "You can be as silly as you like with your names now" he teased right back. He tried not to point out too sharply that she was stuck here. He understood missing his own homeland. If he could go back to Lucis, he probably wouldn't. But he doubted that she had reached that same stage already.
"I can look out for him if you know the name" Caius advised her when she brought up an evil man that had caused untold harm and killed her mother. Add him to the list of other supervillains he had to keep track of. "If we're lucky, the Dragonblades will run into him and put the brakes on him ourselves."
She had begun to ask about him before noticing that they still weren't out of the maze. Caius squinted. Now that she mentioned it... It was weird, wasn't it? "I can throw you in the air if you want to scout. If you aren't falsely advertising, you should fly like a Dagger. I am well versed in throwing those" he joked in turn.

Garnet sensed sarcasm in Caius's response regarding her deeds during the storm, and put her hands on her hips, giving him a look.
"Are you teasing me?" she asked, although her tone was still playful. "It may not be as impressive as fighting a Kraken, but it was not exactly a simple spell. We had to face... things... Memories... That I would rather have avoided altogether." The corruption in the water shrine had tried to use her own memories of her mother against her. To trick her into giving up. Of course, it hadn't worked. Garnet had faced false memories before, and she knew who she was now. She missed her mother, every day, but she also knew that she had to move on without her.
Of course, that moment made her consider the nature of the corruption itself. What had it been? To be so intelligent in its pursuit of hurting them, of knowing them, it made her think that whatever was behind it must have been a malicious entity. Something must have summoned the fiends to this plane. But she didn't want to think about it. Not on a night she was supposed to be enjoying herself.
"It's not silly," she insisted, putting her hands on her hips again when he commented on her chosen moniker. "I don't see how 'Dagger' is anymore unusual than 'Caius'. They are both just words," she huffed, before moving on to follow Caius again.
Her expression darkened a little when he asked about Kuja's name. He thought his Dragonblades could stop him. Maybe they could, Garnet knew better than anybody that Kuja could be defeated, but she had also seen his endless power. She couldn't help but feel he was her responsibility. She didn't know how she felt about putting others in danger.
"Kuja. His name... is Kuja. But... please, be careful. I have stood and watched as he destroyed an entire planet single-handed. I followed him to the centre of creation and all life itself and saw him try to end it all. He is not to be underestimated." She didn't, of course, say more, but there was a tiny, childish part of her that was currently thinking 'more impressive than fighting a Kraken, don't you think?'.
He mentioned that he could throw her in the air, and she huffed again, hands on her hips.
"But you are a Dragonblade, so why don't you just spout wings and fly into the air yourself?" she asked. "Perhaps being named after things doesn't mean you have the same properties as that thing. You never ask if I'm a jewel just because my name is Garnet," she pointed out. "....But it is strange.... I'm sure the exit should be around here somewhere."

The Dragonblades
“I’m actually not” he revealed with a small laugh when Garnet assumed he was being sarcastic. “I just think it’s funny to think about. Miss Poofy Swamp Dress is getting out in the world and making a name for herself. Nicely done.”
Though that memories thing didn’t sound fun. It sounded just like a trip to the Headstone Forest, and he wouldn’t put that on anybody. He very much wanted to burn said forest to the ground given the opportunity. He would be doing people a favor. Still, there were clearly a lot of moving parts to this Kraken, not just the monster’s physical form itself. He had to wonder if there were more monsters like this? And were they capable of even worse things than this?
He was snapped out of his thoughts for a moment as she said his name was no different from dagger. “Caius is a name by definition. Dagger is the thing I use to cut foliage on a good day” he pointed out in what may have been a tease this time. She continued to huff and protest at his jokes, and that got another laugh from him.
“I don’t need to. I can just ask Vordun. Where did you think the Dragon in Dragonblades came from?”
But all smiles left when she said “Kuja”. She described her ordeal, but he had heard some of it before.
“I know the bastard” he remarked with a clear scowl. “I’m already going to kill him. He worked with the Lich, turned on us and tried to kill us to feed to that thing. I’d be dead if Vordun hadn’t been taught to use a Phoenix Down. I wholly intend to give Kuja a receipt for that.”
He had forgotten the exit for a minute. But seriously, where was it?

Garnet gave Caius a look, and a small huff when he told her that he was surprised after his first meeting that she was now making a name for herself. "I told you before, I'm a pro adventurer really. I've done all kinds of things. You just caught me at a bad time," she explained, although her tone was playful. It was obvious that she was just teasing back at his playful words, but she did consider it truthful as well. It was easy to dismiss her as a sheltered Queen, but she had seen so much, and learned so much, by Zidane's side, and she didn't want him to think she hadn't. She had seen adventures most could only dream of. Even if they hadn't always been for the best...
"Well, I still don't see how 'Dagger' is any stranger a name than 'Garnet'. They are both objects," she pointed out, still huffing, although aware that she seemed to be losing this argument, since apparently his Dragonblades were named after an actual dragon. "I'm not a fan of dragons," she admitted after a moment. Kuja had a pet dragon. An army of dragons had attacked the Invincible. And of course... Bahamut...
She glanced in surprise to Caius when he said that he knew Kuja. And then she felt a sense of overwhelming relief when it seemed this wasn't another person going to defend Kuja's ways. Relief. And perhaps a little... guilt? Yes, guilt. Because Zidane would have wanted Kuja to live. But Garnet, in her heart, agreed with Caius. He had to die. "The things that man has done..." Garnet said, her tone darkening a little as she thought on him. "I am sorry for what you endured. I can tell you what I know of him. Perhaps, one day, it will help you defeat him," Garnet told him. Plus, now, she wanted him to know. How lucky he had been to escape. "He was born on another world. I mean, from my home world also. A planet called Terra. He had been created for one purpose. To annihilate life on my home planet and prepare our world for the Terrans. However... Something happened. Kuja rebelled against his creator. He intended to use the power of Eidolons... Summoned creatures... to defeat his former master. Eidolons that could be extracted only from the last summoner. From... me." Garnet paused for a moment, pained by the memory. "He formed a false alliance with my mother, corrupted her, and used her to plunge the entire continent into war. And then he tore my Eidolons from me and used them to commit genocide. He destroyed entire kingdoms, before turning the power on my home Kingdom itself. And yet, it was not enough. His master came for him, and we were all pulled into the battle between the two."
"It developed that his master had given him a limited life span. That he was soon to die. The revelation drove Kuja insane. He absorbed the souls of those still on Terra, and used the power to enter Trance. And then he turned his power onto the planet Terra itself. I saw him tear an entire world apart with his magical power. He destroyed his own home planet before my eyes. And it was still not enough."
"He journeyed to the centre of creation. To the crystal that gave life to the entire universe. And he sought to destroy it. To end all life. Forever. But we stood against him. We followed him there, and at the heart of all creation, we fought back. We defeated him, and the dark god that followed his assault on the crystal. I thought we had saved reality. I thought he had defeated him for good. But..."
She didn't mention Zidane, or Kuja surviving and being rescued. It seemed too complicated. And besides, Kuja had been dying after the fight. She still had no idea how he had survived.
"I don't know what he's planning here. He seems to have lost the power of Trance, but I have no doubt he will try to regain it. And if he does, he will think nothing of cracking this planet apart like an egg. And then... I fear he will repeat his goal from before. He will try to end all of creation. He would rather destroy everything, than allow a world to exist without himself in it." Garnet explained, and then she sighed again.
"I am... sorry. This is a lot to unload on you. I just... His presence here... It is... weighing heavily on my mind," she admitted.

The Dragonblades
“You’re a little young to be a pro adventurer, I think” he teased right back. He had seen plenty of teenagers or those who were barely adults that had seen far too much in this world. He had been one himself at one point. But whatever got her going was fine with him in this case. “Garnet is still a name someone might name their kid. Not so sure about Dagger” he continued to tease, getting a bit of a kick out of making her squirm in the face of her ridiculous name. “And Dagger still sounds like a fake name. But next time I go undercover and for whatever reason want to be super obvious. I’ll take a page out of your book and call myself… Swordbert.”
He couldn’t contain the grin that ensued from that. It wasn’t hard to tell he was intentionally trying to get a rise out of her at this point. He still laughed when she said she wasn’t a fan of dragons. “Let me guess. Kuja has one” he brought up with the frown that came soon after with the topic change. “He tried to give me advice about dragons, shortly before trying to kill me. Not kindly advice, mind. Just about not turning a narrow hallway into an oven. So I figured he had some experience. Vordun’s plenty friendly, though. Maybe he’ll help change your mind. He’s like a very large, very scaly chocobo. Who can get a bit huffy when he realizes you don’t think he’s threatening.”
He’d tried to keep the mood light, but Kuja was Kuja for the both of them. He listened to her tale. He’d heard some of it before, but not in this amount of detail. It was… A lot, to say the least. “Believe it or not, I’ve heard some of this story before. The whole thing about him destroying his own homeworld and trying to destroy the one next to it after. I can’t remember for the life of me who told me though, this… World plays tricks on one’s memory. I think they were a soldier, but I don’t know who they were or where they were going, in case you were wondering.”
He knew he would have asked in her shoes, so better to get the hard part out of the way quickly. She apologized for unloading, and he shook his head. “Don’t be. You’ve been through a lot. Of course you need to unload. I think anyone would need to in your shoes, regardless of whether they would admit it or not. As for Kuja… We’ll deal with him when the time comes. I am not someone predisposed to killing someone in cold blood, but… These are not ordinary circumstances. And a lot more people will die if we don’t.”

Garnet gave Caius an almost curious look when he said that she was young for an adventurer. Not in her experience, anyway. Zidane had been a pro when she'd met him, and he was her age. Vivi knew how to fight with his magic, and had only been a child. Okay, so he'd also been a magical soldier who had escaped from a Black Mage factory, but the point remained. Heck, Eiko had barely been beyond a toddler and could fight. "In my experience, I'm the perfect age," she replied. "The best adventurer I ever knew was the same age as me," she pointed out. Not that she expected Caius to understand that. But being a Queen at sixteen years old had made sure Garnet grew up fast. She saw nothing wrong with being considered a 'pro' at that age, let alone now she was eighteen. Especially after all she had seen and done. "Besides, I think once you've travelled to the end of the universe to save every reality that there ever was from a genocidal maniac who could blow up an entire world with the flick of his wrist and defeated the literal God of Death, you probably get to call yourself pretty experienced," she added teasingly. "Well, nobody I met on my travels minded Dagger, Swordbert," she teased back. "I thought it was a cute, catchy name. And it certainly wasn't what people expected a Princess to name herself, so I think it helped in my cover," she added, although she suspected her dialogue coaching from Zidane and Vivi had helped there too. "Of course, that might have just been my natural talents as an actress," she added, although her tone was clearly playful and it was clear that she didn't mean that.
Garnet's teasing seemed to pause slightly when he commented on dragons, however. She looked back at him for a moment, a distant memory flashing across her eyes. Alexandria burning. Bahamut's wings spread high as he flew over the city, flame seemingly oozing from his mouth. Those bolts of fire, his mega flare, smashing into her home and killing the people she had sworn to protect. Her own responsibility. Both Bahamut and Alexandria. Turned against each other. And her people suffered because she hadn't been able to stop it. "I... commanded a dragon once. Bahamut was an Eidolon under my control. However, he was... a powerful being. Filled with anger and destruction. I could guide him when he was under my power, but Kuja... he got a hold of him. Bahamut was the Eidolon he used to attack my Kingdom. To kill the people I was sworn to protect. I watched my citizens die by the power of the dragon I was supposed to command, and I was helpless to stop it. So many of my people died... Because I failed them as Queen," she sighed. And then the emotions passed. And she was a Queen again, passing on intel about her enemy. "However, you are correct. Kuja did have his own dragon as a steed. And an additional army of them at his command. We engaged them with a fleet of airships before we were able to launch our final assault on Kuja," she explained, but her tone was more matter-of-fact now, as if giving Caius valuable information.
The talk of Kuja did pique her interest however. Somebody had told Caius of him before? She wondered who. A soldier? For a moment her heart leapt; could it be Steiner? Or Beatrix? But it seemed he did not remember. Garnet could relate. She too had some memories that had slipped away. Moments of reuniting with lost friends, except, she couldn't remember who or where. Like Caius said, this place did strange things to your memory.
She sighed, and almost cracked a smile when he spoke about murdering Kuja. "Oh, it gets more complicated than that. Kuja is... a danger to all living things, I have no doubt of that. But... he is also... the brother of the man I love. And that man... he believes Kuja can be redeemed. That Kuja doesn't deserve to die. And I worry that if I kill him, or allow him to be killed, I am becoming the monster Zidane cannot be. And I do not wish to be that. Those choices... Those actions, they are the ones that drove my mother down her dark path. That led to her becoming Kuja's puppet. I cannot do that. I will not. Kuja must be imprisoned. The people must be kept safe. But... I don't think destroying him in cold blood is... the right choice," Garnet admitted.

The Dragonblades
"I was 13. But I wouldn't call myself a pro back then" Caius teased right back with a small laugh when Garnet would insist that she was the perfect age for it. It sounded though, like she truly had been through a lot. "I helped kill a god once at 18. Guess you've got me beat at 16. I'll concede there" he remarked jokingly. Still young, but a "pro" was a "pro" he supposed.
"Maybe they just didn't tell you how silly it was. Most men wouldn't want to offend a beautiful young woman, no matter how silly her name is" Caius bantered right back, his expression unusually jovial as he seemed to for once be able to just... Relax, speak freely and enjoy the moment. He had been a different man since the talk with Celes, though he couldn't for the life of him explain how or why.
Though his voice still remained that neutral calm, with only minor inflections to indicate emotion.
"Natural talent, okay" came the teasing doubt at her next remark, though he didn't elaborate further. The remark spoke for itself. And soon enough, smiles faded as reality came back with a slap in the face. Garnet told more of her story, and Caius listened. It was... A lot. Too much for her to have to deal with. Especially at her age. He knew what it felt like, to an extent. The guilt, having to see what they'd seen... Though it sounded as though Garnet had seen it on a scale he couldn't even dream of. And then of course, matters got even more complicated.
"Zidane?" he inquired curiously. "I've met the lad. A long time ago, mind. He was one of the first people I stumbled upon when I first came here. Fell from the sky atop half an airship. Have you met him again, yet?"
Sheesh, this was a mess. Caius didn't know where to begin with all he was hearing. “Perhaps it is not the right choice. But it may well be the necessary one” Caius brought up, his expression hardening a moment as memories returned. “You and Zidane may hesitate. But he will not. On our way to the lich, I was afflicted by a condition that meant I could not be healed or it would be the end of me, and I was at death’s door as a result. Posing as an ally, Kuja did his best to ensure that any means of curing it were given to his minion instead. And when we faced the lich and he turned on us, he didn’t hesitate to kill me. He knew exactly what would finish me off and didn’t pause even a moment. I felt life leave my body, and only my tiny companion’s bumbling into using a Phoenix Down saved my life.”
So he sort of owed Kuja a stabbing. But more importantly it was easy to see that he was a cold-blooded, ruthless, narcissistic killer who didn’t care who paid the price for his aspirations. The stories he had heard since only made it clear that Kuja was a monster and not a man.
“I do not kill men. Only monsters. It is a rule I swore to after I was forced into becoming someone that I did not enjoy looking back at in the mirror. But I was put into a situation some time ago that made me realize something. There are times that the line between man and monster blur into one and the same. That became my exception.”
It was a hard choice to make. But the incident with the bandit lord Darlene in the slave camp had forced him to acknowledge the hard reality of things. He had horrified Yuna in the way that he had executed Darlene in order to protect Vordun. And he was so sorry she had to see that. He had hated himself for it. Hated what he had become to sink so far. Hated what he had made Yuna witness. But Darlene was a monster. Human or not, she had been responsible for enslaving and ending many lives, and would end many more. Her cruelty shed any remaining human traits she might have still had. Leaving only a murdering monster. And while he had done it to protect Vordun… Zephon was safer for his choice.
Which meant…
“Kuja has made himself monster. That is why I intend to destroy him before he ends more lives, or worse”
Still, after some thought, he would give an exasperated sigh. Darlene had been beyond redemption, no doubt. And Kuja was just as calculating and cruel. A planet buster. He couldn’t imagine him being redeemable. Still, if Zidane and Garnet believed it…
“But if you wish it, I will stay my hand… For now. But let me make myself clear. Prison will not hold someone like Kuja. This is your chance to redeem him, and end this once and for all. If you see Zidane, tell him that he has until the next incident. If I catch wind of Kuja hurting anyone else, I will kill him out of necessity. I cannot tolerate further bloodshed. That is my limit.”
It was something that he had kept completely calm while speaking of these things. Though in truth, Caius just knew how to maintain his poker face. Below the surface, his blood was boiling.
