The park that surrounded him was beautiful, at least from what he could see from the ground. Zack couldn't remember the last time he was...lost. Scratch that. He couldn't remember the last time he was lost and alone. He had gotten lost plenty of times, mostly due to his own antics of course, but that was definitely besides the point. Staying true to his nickname, Zack didn't like being alone. It left him alone to his thoughts, and those had a special talent in confusing him a lot of the time. Especially now.
Why had Shinra been after him? What had he done wrong!? He had been NOTHING but loyal to them, and they have the nerve to send a whole frickin' army after him!? If he ever saw them again, he would give them a piece o- was that a palm tree? Zack hadn't seen one of those in, well, never! Jumping up from where he was laying, he wandered, or well ran, over to it. Giving it a 'knock', he make sure to look just in case something decided to fall out of it. That would be his luck right now, to be struck by a coconut to knock him out. Again.
Sighing, he started to walk away from the tree only to hear a strange noise from above him. Thinking he was under attack, he grabbed the Buster Sword and took a defensive stance. That didn't last too long because he found the source of the noise, and he almost dropped his weapon. Was that a flying...train? Ship? Village? It was huge! Setting the Buster Sword back to where it belonged, he blinked several times before running his hand through his hair. Where was he?
It didn't seem like he was too far from a town, as he could see buildings in the distance. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he made his way towards them. As he passed by people, he noticed he was getting some strange looks. He wasn't sure if it was his attire, or the giant sword on his back. Either way, Zack tried to smile at each one of them, definitely not wanting to make enemies right off the bat. As he entered town, he noticed statues that looked really cool. There seemed to be people cleaning up, which he was curious about. As he got a closer look at one of the people he thought she looked kind of like-
No. It couldn't be. There was no way in Gaia that she was here. Well, from what it looked like, there wasn't even a Gaia anymore so what did he know? Deciding that it was best to make a fool out of himself rather than let her get away, he ran over to her and made his way to standing right in front of her. His eyes went huge and he had a smile that was even bigger. "Cissnei! I'm so glad to see you!" As he exclaimed his excitement, he thought it would be best to also show it by hugging her around the arms and spinning her around. After he set her down, he tilted his head to the side. "So, where are we?"
[attr="class","crashBody"] Cissnei was finally drawing up some loose ends in Torensten. It had been an interesting trip to say the least. Between the dating event and meeting Vincent, she found the trip worth her time. She found a merchant’s ‘missing’ daughter. She had absconded with a lover because of her father’s disapproval. Cissnei did her job in finding her, but she could not force her to return to someone. Well, she could. But that was not in THIS job’s description. She was simply to find her, make sure she was okay, and report back. [break][break] Just as she was excusing herself from the encounter she heard a familiar, energetic voice. Her brow creased and she turned to meet it. [break][break] It was... [break][break] She took a step back, unprepared for such a sudden introduction. Hadn’t he… She didn’t make it in time to… [break][break] To save him from the same military that was turning against the Turks because they preferred to protect Verdot instead of killing him. No… The Shinra executives turned against the Turks because they were a liability. They did not trust them to keep all their dirty laundry bagged and speak to no one of it. [break][break] Cissnei had already begun her small rebellion then, when she defied Tseng to let Zack go. She hadn’t realized she and Tseng had begun to think along the same lines... [break][break] And now he was here, right as rain. [break][break] The look on her face was almost like he had something drawn on his face. “Zack…? I’m glad to see you too.” Though she held an unsure tone in her words, as if she couldn’t quite believe he was there. The reality was still sinking in when she grunted at being engulfed in a giant bear hug and spun around. She stumbled a bit from the disorientation of it all. After two blinks, and the dizziness dissipated, she looked up to see him smiling down at her. It was good to see his bright eyes and his smile was contagious. She felt herself giving one back. [break][break] “You don’t know where you are?” Zack was always a little daft, but she knew the signs well enough by now. He either just arrived to Zephon or he really just absentmindedly wandered. She crossed her arms and shifted her weight to one hip. There was a momentary pause as she tried to recover from her shock. “Hey. I had a hard day. How about we go to my favorite watering hole here. We’ll talk it out there.” She turned, giving him a wink as she did so. She began leading the way, without waiting for a real answer. [break][break] Of course, he would follow. “This may seem an odd question. What is the last thing you remember?”
The smile on Zack's fade was probaby permanently set there at this point in his life, as it was still there even though Cissnei was looking at him weird. Wiping at his face and looking around for a mirror or a fountain with water, he figured there was something there. "What is it? Is there something on my face? Probably dirt from the ground." After he decided that whatever could have been there was gone now, he turned to face her once again.
After he put her down, he let her get oriented again and then noticed she was smiling back at him. Zack had that effect on people, and he knew it. He lived off of it. She questioned him and he shook his head. "Not a clue in the world." It was true, Zack was always one to get himself lost in the smallest of places, mostly due to the sheer fact that his mind did its own thing when he had to walk anywhere. When he was sent on missions, that was a main reason someone else was usually sent with him. That, and it was protocol most of the time.
There it was. The typical Cissnei pose. Most of the times he had seen her, her arms were crossed and she had her weight to one side. Zack decided that was definitely a good sign, it means she hadn't changed! "Can I get food there? I'm starving!" Then again, it was a watering hole so that was probably out of the question. Maybe there was a small place they could swing by and grab something. Oh wait, did he have money?
As he was following her, he started to go for his pockets to look for money as he heard her question. Tilting his head to the side, he stopped and also crossed his arms. "The last thing I remember before waking up on the ground was an entire Shinra militia pointing guns at me. I took most of them out, but the last of them got me pretty good. I was sure I was a goner." Unless she was dead too, this was definitely not the afterlife.
[attr="class","infoNotes"]Let's avoid the subject of death
[attr="class","crashLyrics"]Boy Oh Boy
[attr="class","crashBody"] She was staring at Zack’s face. It was so alive. She blinked and realized he was looking every which way to see what was on his face. “Oh, no. It’s just…” She said too softly, quite a bit confused. It’s just that she thought he was dead? That she had failed him? “It’s just that I thought I wouldn’t see you again.” She said tactfully, burying the tightness in her chest. He seemed too cheerful and full of life for that conversation. It would be better. To stay on the more cheerful side of things. [break][break]
“Of course. My treat. They have some nibbles available. ” She asked him, raising a brow as she started along the way. They would have some bar food nibbles. She shook her head at his obvious panicking. He really must have just arrived if he didn’t have a penny on him. She side eyed him for a moment at his last memory. It made her flinch at hearing it. “Well, you are here.” She found she was trying to keep her mind straight. Was this the afterlife? [break][break]
“You must have been whisked away by the greater forces here.” Perhaps, he had not died. Just at the right time, he was brought here. The thought was a small comfort to the burden she carried. “We’re in a place called Torensten.” She started. “If you’ve never heard of it, it’s because you are no longer on Gaia.” She looked up at him again and wondered how he would take that. Probably as he always did. In stride and with a smile. “They are still picking up after a festival. It was quite the sight you missed. But, I’m sure you’ll have more to see in the future.” [break][break] They came upon the Leaky Taven and she pushed one of the doors open to him. It was full of sailors at this time, and they were chanting something to the tune of the piano. It smelt of soggy wood all around.
Cissnei confirmed that there was nothing on his face, which Zack was glad to hear. She stated that she wasn't sure she would see him again, to which he smiled and threw his arms out. "Here I am! You can't get rid of 1st Class Zack Fair that easily!" He gave her a small wink before continuing on their journey to wherever she was leading them. He had no idea what had gone on outside of his battle with Shinra. He definitely did not know the Turks had been trying to find him before the militia did. He didn't know that he had died in their eyes.
Zack wasn't sure his smile could get any bigger, but at the thought of getting food, it sure tried to. "Awe, thanks Cissnei, you're the best. I'll repay you back as soon as I get money. I apparently don't have any at the moment." He rubbed the back of his head as they approached the building. They stopped outside of it and that was when Cissnei informed him of what was going on.
Whisked away? Well that was definitely one word for it. "Greater forces? Like, aliens?" Leave it to Zack to think of that at a time like this. He looked around as she stated they were no longer in Gaia. "Yeah, that much I picked up on." Even though he hadn't been to many places on Gaia, everywhere he had seen here just didn't have that vibe.
"My question is why? Why are people brought here? Do you have to die in order to get here? I'm pretty sure I would not have survived that attack." All the questions. As they entered the establishment, he looked around. This place had a comfortable aura, but also screamed that bar fights happened a lot. He figured he would have to stay on guard, and was glad he knew Cissnei could handle herself. Of course he would still rescue her if he needed to, but it would take a lot for that to happen.
[attr="class","crashBody"] He still was the high energy, optimistic Zack that she remembered. Could anything really phase him? “Oh, don’t I know that.” First class SOLDIERs seemed to have two modes. Unmeasurable confidence in their abilities or bat-shit neuroticism that led to them destroying everything around them. But luckily, Zack seemed immune to the latter. [break][break]
“Don’t worry about it Zack.” She dismissed his offer to repay her. “What do you do with all your money? Aren’t SOLDIERs supposed to be paid well?” She tapped the side of her chin with the tip of her index finger at her playful words. She gave him a grin. “Well, here in Torensten, they have plenty of job boards for you. You can always pick one and earn a little cash while helping others.” Torensten was built for his type, wasn’t it? The kind-hearted hero that can offer their blade to those in need. [break][break]
Cissnei sighed at his alien's response. Would aliens even surprise him after being injected with Jenova cells? “No one really knows what the higher powers are or why they brought us here. Probably to do something to further their own end." She winced at hearing him speak about having to die to get here. It was possible, but then again, how come he just arrived when she might have died during Meteorfall...years after? [break][break] But she did not want to think about him not surviving the ‘attack’. He hadn’t. She bore witness to the end results. Or so she thought… [break][break] She felt a pang in her chest. [break][break] No this thing ‘being’ knew about timelines and other alternate universes. It was smart enough to pick and choose. [break][break] Zack seemed to hesitate a bit, but she gave a shrug and picked a small table along the wall. Eventually a woman came to serve them and she looked up. The waitress didn’t even speak, just raised a brow, with a hand on her hip. “A honey bourbon for me.” Then she waited for Zack to order patiently. Once he ordered, she would ask, "So...what do you know about this world? Let's start with that?"
At her comment about not being able to get rid of him, he gave her a wink along with a cheeky smile. Zack was definitely a person that could get annoying at some point, but most actually enjoyed being around him due to his positivity. He definitey stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the other First Class SOLDIERs, but he enjoyed it being that way. Angeal had done well putting up with him, and Zack always had to be on toes around Genesis, but he hadn't really been around Sephiroth too horribly much until his last few weeks with Shinra.
Shrugging, he turned out the inside of his pockets. "No idea. I woke up here with no money. Come to think of it, I didn't have that much money with me before the Shinra military found me either. Wonder where it went." Of course there was at least four years of his memory missing, so if he really knew, he knew that it had been confiscated. Well, what was on him anyways. There was still some in his SOLDIER barracks. In Midgar. Lots of good that did him here.
His eyes lit up at the sound of job openings. "Oh man, that would be great!" As he listened to her, he rubbed his chin with his fingers, as if he was in deep thought. "Further their own end? Wait, so we were brought here to die again?" Well that would be dumb, and Zack knew a lot about dumb ideas. They took a seat and Cissnei ordered. "Same drink for me, and can a get a bacon cheeseburger with some fries?" He didn't want to be too much trouble.
When she asked what he knew about this world, he looked around. "I've seen a little park, the place I met you, and now here. Those are the only places I've been." Looking back at the Buster Sword behind up leaning against the wall, he sighed. "I remember giving that to Cloud, and then I was staring up at a different sky. I found a palm tree, then walked over here and found you! That's it." Well, now he really sounded insane.
[attr="class","crashBody"] The scientist probably used his money to take bets on how long a subject would survive. Or whatever scientist did for fun. Who knows? They were all terrible. “Well, what’s lost is lost. No use crying over spilt milk.” She gave a shrug and shook her head. There were plenty of ways to make more. [break][break] She winced as Zack just nonchalantly talked about dying again. She frowned and looked down at her hands. “I don’t think it's to die again. I think it is more like a second chance. They haven’t made their goals clear to anyone.” She quietly let him order as she felt herself brooding again. She folded her hands neatly in her lap under the table. She didn’t want him to see the tension in them. The waitress gave him a wink followed by a ‘you got it’. [break][break] “Zack…” She said softly. “I am...so sorry about all of it.” She looked away at the napkin holder. A frown touched upon her face at every reminder of his death he gave her. “I failed you.” She felt her throat tightened. “I thought allowing you to run would be for the best. I didn’t know that I should have taken you to Tseng instead.” It was a spur of the moment decision. She had been so fed up with the lies and being kept in the dark. Being chased and hunted by the executives and her father-figure lost. Then finding out Zack was an experiment on top of it. How was she to know Tseng’s mind at the time? [break][break] “I searched for you after that, but…” She had been too late. She felt her eyes brim with tears. She let her hair fall to obscure its view, as she continued to look at an insignificant spot on the floor. She had lived with the guilt for quite some time. He had not deserved what had come to him and she was partially to blame.
As she stated there was no use crying over spilled milk, Zack looked at her. He knew it was a saying, but a sad thought pulled at him. "What if it was chocolate milk though?" He did enjoy chocolate milk, so spilling it would be a little upsetting. He did give her a wink at his comment though, to make sure she knew that it was meant to be a joke. There were some days where he would be joking, but people would take him seriously. He figured that meant he was either really good or really bad at them.
Speaking of serious, he watched as she looked down at her hands, the mood suddenly changing. What she said really made sense. "Yeah, that sounds about right. Why here though? If they thought someone needed a second chance, why take them from their own world? That's more like a fresh start to me." The wink from the waitress was not missed by Zack, who gave a sly smile back. Well, at least he still had his charm, and he was proud of that.
Zack almost didn't catch what Cissnei said, but she continued and Zack just listened. So the Turks had come looking for him that day? That wasn't something he expected to hear, but Tseng had a way of surprising people. Noticing that she looked like she was about to cry, Zack left his chair and squatted in front of Cissnei, instantly using his thumbs to wipe what was trying to come out away. "Hey. Don't do that. None of it was your fault, okay?" It really wasn't, but he could see why she thought that.
To be quite fair, he was sure the whole thing wasn't even his fault. He did everything right. He went after Genesis and Angeal like he was told, he tried to get Sephiroth to listen, he was almost killed by the man! Then, to wake up being experimented on by Hojo? But hew was the one on the run and gunned down? No, it was not her fault at all. "You did what you thought was best, you had no way of telling what was going to happen. I could have listened and came with you, but I didn't. I'm more to blame than you are." He rested his left had on her knee to keep steady and left his right on the side of her face.
[attr="class","infoNotes"]She doesn't want to cry in public. It's bad for her image.
[attr="class","crashLyrics"]Boy oh Boy.
[attr="class","crashBody"] She rolled her eyes at his silly joke as a soft smile tugged on her lips. Did he really not understand he had shifted the mood to make it harder to smile? Turks may have taken lives in the past, but they were taught by Veld that no human life was worthless. They had to be the cold-stone agents during work, but after? Well, that was up to them. And to hear Zack so non-chalantly talk about his death, after what they both went through, it was clearly not humorous to Cissnei. [break][break] “I don’t know.” She said simply. She hated saying it. It had always been her job to know. “The only way to find out is to continue on. Hope some event reveals it to us.” She shook her head and shrugged. “Did you understand the will of the lifestream? Did you know Minerva’s will?” No one did, except perhaps the extinct Cetra. “It is the same here.” She paused for a moment, taking the water provided by the staff. “A fresh start is more accurate. You will be starting from scratch here. Work, home, companions, and purpose...these all need to found again.” [break][break] She turned her head away when he sat in front of her. She did not like appearing weak in front of someone other than her fellow Turks. And he had taken notice of it, hadn’t he? She gave a huff, unsure if it was relief, sorrow, or exasperation. They all felt right. Of course Zack would not blame her. It wasn’t in his nature to passively blame others. [break][break] She could have tried harder to strong arm Zack and Cloud to come with her. But he was protective and whatever Hojo had done to him had increased his strength. She would not have been able to force him to come without backup. Worse, that backup had been scarce considering the shaky relationship they currently had with the executives. “I don’t understand how any of this could happen to a good man, like yourself. I didn’t then either. I let you take my bike so that I could find out for myself at the mansion.” She shook her head. That had not helped either and created a bigger mess. “So, please do not joke about your death. I cannot bear it. I had to live through it once.” She couldn’t even gain the courage to tell his parents or Aerith what happened. It seemed Tseng couldn’t either. She looked down at him. “I won’t break down here. We have better things to talk about.” A gentle encouragement for him to return to his seat.
