[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Hilda watched Garnet blush. She politely averted her gaze, and concealed a small chuckle. It seemed Garnet needed to keep a couple things secret to herself. Of course, Hilda would not push for them. She was allowed to keep such things to herself, which made it all the more fonder. “Of course, my dear.” There was a soft smile on her lips as she watched as Garnet fretfully stabbed into the air. “We all have our talents. For healers, the talent simply isn’t brutish swashbuckling.” Though she understood there could be a time for one wanting to defend one’s self.
She nodded understandingly to Garnet’s misconceptions on potions. If one only found or bought them, of course they would not just know that there was a process behind creating one. Hilda shook her head. However, Garnet’s tone didn’t sound very certain about learning. “If you aren’t tempted into learning, I will simply concoct them. It shall open your schedule for other chores for the church.” She would not pressure a Queen into doing something she didn’t want to do.
One of Hilda’s best kept secrets was that she researched and dabbled in other magics - even forbidden ones. Not proficiently, but enough to learn how best it would interact with her own magic. Though, such studies naturally led to the creation of potions and remedies - something her magic could be woven into if someone needed it at another time. "A few supplies are needed: a base, bottles, corks, and of course the herbs - echinacea, chamomile, gingko, St. John's wort..." A few others would help too. There was a physical component as well as a magical component. They worked in harmony to quickly mend the body.
“Pardon me. Street-smarts.” Hilda corrected herself watching how proud Garnet was of herself. Though she seemed uncertain at the dialect being taught to her. “...’alrighty?’” She tried, but found she didn’t like how it felt on her tongue. It was so undignified. “How about introductions? How may I introduce myself?”

The comforting words from her Auntie over being a healer helped Garnet feel a little better. It was true that she spent most of her time on her journey surrounded by warriors. The only other mages had been children, and there had definitely been a sense that at times she felt a little embarrassed by her talents. She was as strong as the six year old girl when it came to physical combat. As capable of battling as the nine year old boy. She was, although still young, an adult, but could never keep up or compete with the likes of Zidane, Freya, Steiner, or even Quina. But it was true that none of them could heal like she did. "Indeed, Auntie," she smiled gently. "Plus, I can also summon a thunder god. Even swashbucklers think twice before that," she added, her tone teasing. It was rare that Garnet made light of her summoning abilities. Too many painful memories, and too much of knowing her powers had been used to inflict pain by those in positions of power. Kuja. Her Mom. Alexandria still wore the battle scars from Bahamut's attack. Lindblum was still damaged by Atmos. And Cleyra? Well, Cleyra was gone forever. She felt a little guilty as soon as she said it, because it wasn't a matter to joke about. But still, it WAS part of her. She might not have been physically the strongest, and she would always be coddled royalty, learning about the world with wide eyes, but she was capable in her own way. And it was a way many people could not match.
Hilda seemed to assume that Garnet wasn't interesting in learning about how to make potions, which perhaps had been true in the immediate sense. It seemed like a broad topic, and something she knew nothing about, and when she pictured her mixing various liquids in glass beakers the image of something immediately exploding in her face sprang to mind. But she also didn't particularly like being told that she couldn't do something. It wasn't uncommon for somebody to dismiss something as something she shouldn't do because she was a Queen. (Usually while Steiner jumped up and down protesting). So Hilda assuming she didn't want to learn just made Garnet want to protest. "I never said that I did not want to learn!" she protested, putting her hands on her hips. "Learning new skills is important, and what magical potions can and cannot do is something every Queen should know." She insisted. "Also, you never know when the fate of the world may require you to transform somebody from a Oglop back into a person," she teased her Auntie lightly. She knew Hilda would know exactly what she was referring to.
Hilda began to list the ingredients they needed, and Garnet, having just insisted that she was going to learn and that she totally could and it was worthwhile, did her best to not look too intimidated by the list of ingredients. She wondered if she should write them down. "Well, I am sure that we can find those," Garnet smiled confidently, walking forward beside her Auntie again. "Uh, I... do not suppose you have them written down?" she asked hopefully, already worried that she'd forget them.
Garnet couldn't resist a tiny giggle when Hilda said 'alrighty'. Garnet wondered if she had sounded that strange when she had first tried. Of course, Hilda followed it up with a follow-up question, and Garnet paused to consider. Okay, so maybe she wasn't an EXPERT on common speak, but how hard could it be? She travelled with enough people to pick up something. How would Zidane introduce himself? He'd probably tap his chest proudly, but she ignored that bit. "Oh, uh, well, you'd just say something like, um... 'hello, I'm Dagger!'," she smiled, not quite sounding so confident now she wasn't directly repeating what she'd been told, but it sounded about right. Wow, it had really been a while since she had thought about this. Maybe she had settled too comfortably back into the role of queen...
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]“Oh dear. Surely you have not fisticuffed swashbucklers…” To imagine the very young Queen of Alexandria getting into a fight with common thugs still felt bizarre to Hilda. Lindblum’s regents hoped to keep her royal highness’s travel discreet and safe with the hired thieves guild. To have her fight alongside them - not even to boost the morale of troops - felt like an unacceptable risk for someone of such importance.
She turned away from such distressing thoughts. That was in the past, though she was quite sure Garnet continued to put herself in such scenarios with these adventuring parties in this world. Though Hilda felt debating with Garnet to stop dangerous adventuring would be similar to asking Kuja to apologize for his evil deeds - a lot of effort that would yield no results.
Instead, she turned to talking about the topic of summoning. She felt this an opportune time to learn more.
“How did you learn to use your summoning abilities?” Most magic came naturally to a user. After all, its manifestation was usually agreeable with one’s own persona. However, if not taught to hone it carefully, it could overwhelm one’s body with fatigue at best and complete consumption at worse.
“I fret over Eiko. She is talented, but overeager. Unfortunately, I know very little of the methods of summoning magic to aid her. The scraps I was able to piece together tell eidolons are memories born from people returned to Gaia’s Crystal. The Crystal churns these memories into protectors of Gaia - eidolons. The summoning tribe call upon these eidolons.” She gave a soft huffing sigh. “It seems simple an understanding, except…” She trailed off, not wanting to dredge up poor memories for Garnet. To have one’s essence tore from her…
It was a traumatic experience.
But the educated part of her wondered if they manifest in each summoner too? Or why such magic could be stored in gemstones or caves. “I do not understand how this connection or the strain it takes on the summoner. There are no teachers left to aid in such training. I hoped to lean on you and perhaps find some new resources here.” Hilda confided her gentle worry to Garnet.
Perhaps, it was based on her own worries of growing into her magic growing up. There was plenty to confide in with white magic. But she had to experiment with transmutation magic, as such an ability was rare. The experiments had taken a toll on her body that caused her much trouble and heartache in recent years. She wished to avoid that for her daughter’s sake.
Hilda's eyes widened at Garnet’s protests to her about learning a potion. “Indeed. Knowledge and how to wield it is important to women like us.” Hilda lowered her lashes coyly upon Garnet joking at turning her husband into an oglop. “Unfortunately, there are very few who could undo such a spell. He was lucky I knew how to yield his form to him.” He was lucky she is a soft and gentle person. She was still not wholly certain he came for her because he cared for her, or if he simply wished to be returned back to his human form. After all, it was hard to have affairs stuck as the form of an insect.
She had much thoughts on the matter, but it was meant to be a light-hearted conversation. It was no place to talk about her uncertain relations with her husband. “Even if creating potions is not your expertise, you could still use the knowledge to supervise those who are. It is good to be walked through it.”
Hilda smiled and chuckled lightly. “I am afraid I do not have the ingredients written down, let alone if they are even called such things here. Once we discover more, I can correspond the recipes for you.” She wanted to say 'for your highness', but knew Garnet was trying to openly stray from that.
She listened thoughtfully to Garnet’s explanation of introductions. “Seems rather plain…” She said gently. Where was the proper acknowledgement of titles? The history of the name and person? The lengthy resume, so that the leaders knew how to address them? “Do I need a pseudonym too?” How did Garnet come by Dagger?
Hilda saw the local herb shop and stopped. She could smell the freshness of the herbs fill the air. “Perhaps we should stop here first.” The potency and newness of the herbs were quiet clear in the earthy shop.

Garnet had to repress a small giggle when Hilda asked if she had 'fisticuffed swashbucklers'. Not because of her use of language; despite Garnet's claims, she had no idea if that was the correct term or not, but more because of the horror on her Auntie's face. Her Auntie was fully aware that Garnet had travelled the world with adventurers, and even journeyed to other realms and the centre of creation to fight a maniacal madman, but still seemed to want to cling to the belief that she had never actually been in a fight before. It was actually rather sweetly naïve. Garnet wondered if this was how other people felt when they spoke to her...
She smiled and looked over at her Auntie. "Well, the majority of the, uh, swashbuckling was left to the others. I was mainly healed the others, and summoned, of course. Not to mention, when Steiner was in the party, it was nearly impossible for me to actually attack anything without him literally holding me back, shrieking 'princess!!!'," she did her little impression of him, which she knew Hilda would find instantly familiar. "But, well, I have had to hit plenty of monsters with my staff. Rackets made it a little easier. I could attack while staying back, and they were more effective too, because they relied on my magical abilities," she smiled. She wondered what Hilda would be like in a fight. Would she use a weapon, or rely entirely upon her magic? Having a weapon certainly helped when a monster attacked you, after all. It allowed you to at least deflect some of the damage.
The conversation turned a little more serious, however, when Hilda asked about Garnet's summoning abilities. She paused for a moment, hesitating as she thought about it. "I... don't know. It's strange. It was always a part of me. Like you said, a natural part. I could feel them within me. But... I was scared of them. They felt so powerful, and I didn't understand them. We talked about them, of course. My mother, my father and I, but, I never really fully understood what they were. I was quite happy to pretend that part of me never existed, to hide it away deep down and never use it. I was far too afraid to ever summon anything," she admitted. And then she sighed. "And then they were stolen from me. And my every fear came true. I saw what the power inside me was capable of doing. When I saw... Atmos tearing into Lindblum, it felt like... it felt like I was doing it. It was my power. It had been my responsibility. And I had let it be stolen. I kept telling myself it wasn't that. I wasn't evil because I owned this power. It was being used for evil purposes, but it wasn't evil. But.... I'm not sure I ever truly believed it," she sighed.
"Ramuh helped. He guided me through my first summonings, and was gentle and kind, and I saw that eidolons could be used for good. But still, their power is not to be taken lightly. Much like ourselves, eidolons have their personalities. They will obey you, but they have darker impulses. Bahamut is... destructive. He was a necessary power when commanding him helped us stop Kuja, but I am now glad to be free of his presence," Garnet explained. "They are not like casting spells. You are summoning a living being that obeys your commands, but has its own personality and desires. And most of them wish to destroy and cause harm. There is a reason so many Eidolons are destructive," Garnet finished.
"The strain is.... emotional," she went back to answer her Auntie's question. "The creatures that you summon... you... I feel responsible for them. I don't mean that you feel their emotions, just that... when they kill, you feel as though you have killed. The blood they shed is on your hands," she explained. "But... Eiko is far stronger than I. She is a warrior in spirit. And she knows far more about the Eidolons than I do. Have faith in her. She is... far better equipped to handle them than I am," Garnet went on.
Luckily, such a heavy subject didn't quite remain, although Garnet felt a little guilty about her jokes regarding Uncle Cid. She smiled slightly when Hilda said that they were lucky she could turn him back. "We were lucky that you chose to do so. We still all owe you a great debt," she replied. Without the Hilda Garde III who knew how far they would have come? They may have never stopped Kuja. And Cid, restored, had saved them at the Battle of the Iifa Tree. She had never forgotten either.
"Well, perhaps I shall have to write it down for both of us then," Garnet smiled, her mood lightening. "I... sometimes regret not writing more on my last adventure. There are so many memories, and so much that I learned... and... sometimes I think I would like to reflect upon it."
"Oh, common speak is often plain and direct. And then, rather surprisingly, often anything but. There are so many colourful idioms and metaphors that I spent much of my time learning from... what did I term them? 'Context clues'. Otherwise, an awful lot of the time, you have no idea what anybody is saying!"
She actually laughed slightly when Hilda asked if she needed a pseudonym as well, and smiled. "I do not think that I need one here either. It is just... When travelling, 'Dagger' became as much a part of me as 'Garnet'. She was my identity as an adventurer. I... sometimes feel that it is easier to be... who I need to be here, by being Dagger, and not Garnet. I... know that it is silly. But, I am a Queen. I am allowed my follies," she teased lightly, knowing that Hilda couldn't argue with her rank. "Of course, if you do wish for one, perhaps I could help you find one?" she smiled.
They stopped outside of a herb shop, and Hilda seemed to believe it was a good place to look. "It seems appropriate. I shall follow your lead," Garnet nodded eagerly.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]“Sir Steiner does seem a little overbearing.” She gave a smile and a small chuckle behind her hand. Garnet really was still quite young with common complaints of youth. That adults were too busy securing her safety when all she wanted was to be free to act of her own accord. “However, he is a loyal knight dedicated to your safety. He is an exemplary ally to have.” Though she had not had long to meet with Steiner, Hilda had sensed no malice from him. Just a sincere need to keep his charge safe. “I see now that fighting with companions has emboldened you. If you are interested in advancing your skills, why not find a tutor?” A queen who knows how to fight to protect the people could only boost the morale of the kingdom.
Hilda silently listened to Garnet’s explanation of her summoning abilities. She had not expected Garnet to reveal her story and fears to her. Regardless, she politely inclined her head and listened. It sounded like she was ruled by her fear. She pretended they did not exist and shirked responsibility for them. In the end, the lack of responsibility led to the eidolons being stolen from her and used by another. When Garnet mentioned not fully believing the eidolons were not fully evil, Hilda interjected. “Are memories evil? No. Not inherently. But mere remembrance affects people differently. How a person responds to the effect is usually the display of their temperament. Eidolons are simply memories given life, as I understand. How it is wielded is up to the user.” She shook her head, “It is hard to see someone use your powers for evil, but that is not how you would choose to wield such blessed memories of your people.”
She listened to Garnet’s rest of the story. How some of these eidolons have personalities and impulses of their own. It sounded very much like any living being. Though she was not sure if she believed that they wished to destroy and cause harm. Not when they were used to being guardians. It may have been Garnet’s own biases and fears projected. But she was no expert, nor could she use the magic in the ways Eiko and Garnet could. All she could do was rely on Garnet’s word for it. “To me it sounds like controlling eidolons is similar to commanding troops. Their lives are in your hands and you are responsible for them. Except you are the literal conduit for which they are brought forth.” She closed her eyes before looking at Garnet. “As much as I hate it, sometimes harm cannot be avoided. Even if all you desire is to heal and protect, there will be people who you need to beat back. But I think you know and have lived that. You are wise in your caution to use such power.”
She smiled at Garnet’s gentle comfort that Eiko was much more durable in her warrior spirit. “Perhaps she is. I still hope to find a teacher for her. But it seems to me, from your story, the eidolons are just as much teachers as they are fighters.” Still, Hilda would worry. Maybe Ramuh would teach Eiko as he had Garnet. Hilda would just have to accept it was out of her hands and maybe be lucky enough to find a proper tutor.
“I am owed nothing. It is my duty to restore and protect Lindblum, including restoring my dear froggy woggy and doing what I can to stop narcissistic sorcerers.” She closed her eyes at the memory. “Was my price too high for restoration? All I wanted was an apology.” It seemed the two men that seemed to take prominent positions in her life were terrible at giving them. She had to pull Cid’s teeth to finally receive his.
She shook her head at the change of conversation. “It is never too late to write down your adventuring memories. You might even write a memoir.”
“Commonspeak sounds terribly arduous to understand. If it is plain and direct, then how would I not know what is being referred to?” Hilda was already becoming confused. Perhaps, it was better to not change and remain herself. Lest, she looks like a fool trying to pretend she was a commoner. “I do love sobriquets.” She loved to give monikers in endearment. “Unfortunately, I don’t think “Dagger” will suit me, as it does you. Nor any weapon really…” She hummed thoughtfully.
Garnet seemed hesitant to lead her errand. Hilda simply nodded and took command. “Look for chamomile and gingko. I shall find the echinacea and St. John’s wort.”
She entered the herb store. It was full of neatly labelled jars. She turned to look for the common plants she needed. As she turned to browse the shelves, she found that the echinacea here was called “purple coneflower”. She found it chopped and dried. It was not as fresh as she wanted, but she was sure the potency would be about the same if more of the dried variant was used. There was a mesh bag available for her to scoop what she needed out of the jar. “May I ask how many potions we need to make for the church? Are there other demanding ailments that necessitate remedies?”

[attr="class,beatext"]
"He is so much more than that," Garnet replied when Hilda moved to Steiner's defence. "He is my oldest and truest friend, who has stuck by me throughout all of my follies and mistakes, and put his trust in me when I needed him the most. I will never forget what he has done for me. He is so much more to me than a knight and a soldier," she smiled gently. "But, if one cannot make jokes about one's friends, who can one joke about?" she pointed out teasingly. Something else she had learned even before her travels. How teasing and jokes could be affection. It was perhaps a side of her Uncle Cid and Auntie Hilda had never truly seen much, as she was younger when they knew her well, but still a side of her she knew existed. She laughed gently when Hilda suggested she get a tutor to learn to fight. "Oh, Auntie, I think if it was a skill I was at all good at, I would have picked it up while travelling the world. Besides, there are so many more important things for me to focus upon. I would like Alexandria to become a place where we never have to fight again. That's my dream," she admitted.
Hilda was, of course, learned on the existence of Eidolons. She guessed she had learned most of this from Eiko, who herself had learned from the Eidolon Wall. But Garnet believed that they were so much more than that. No, she knew that they were so much more than that.
"We... I-I mean, the summoners, thought that they were more than that," Garnet admitted. "From the translations of the Eidolon Wall, even they didn't fully understand the Eidolons. They would change form to match different cultures, they seemed to have their own personalities... Some believed that the Eidolons took the forms of creatures that existed in legend, rather than being legendary creatures themselves. We.... just do not know. Even the summoners understood very little about them. But I know that they think and that they can feel. Ramuh can help guide me, he is talkative and kind. Some of the others, less so," she explained. "I can control them, and command them, but I still feel their feelings. Bahamut in particular is... difficult," she admitted. "You are right, of course. We have much to learn about them still, and I should work with Eiko. We are the last living summoners, and we must do our best to understand them. Perhaps we can change the more aggressive ones from their ways. It's just... difficult. After what I've seen them do."
"I will do my best to help Eiko once I return to Gaia. It would be good to see her again, and we can work together to understand Eidolons. Perhaps it is time peaceful study of them began again. Much like the summoners did," Garnet suggested. "Besides, when we have children, there's a possibility they will inherit our powers, and we will want them to be guided," she added. Truthfully, kids wasn't something she had thought about much of discussed, but she WAS a Queen. It was expected of her. And when children came, she would want them to understand both their genome and summoner lineage.
Garnet felt a pang of regret at her natural assumption Zidane would be the father. If she ever found him again...
"Well, you would need a different name from myself anyway," Garnet smiled as she tried to think of an appropriate alias for Hilda. "Hm. I chose dagger from Zidane's weapon, but naming yourself after Cid's weapon would be strange. I do not think that 'Airship' would be an appropriate name," Garnet admitted thoughtfully. "You should name yourself after an item you are fond of. Perhaps... Parasol? Fan? Potion? You said you were fond of them, so perhaps Sobriquet?" she suggested, each suggestion not sounding quite right to her. "I think it is important that it is a name that you choose for yourself," she added, hoping to escape the pressure of naming Hilda.
"It is hard to know. Any amount would be better than what we have. The usual antidotes and eye drops are useful. Of course, a full remedy is far more useful but far harder to acquire," Garnet explained. She looked curiously at Hilda. "How did you know what to pick, when it was not correct labelled?" All the herbs looked the same to Garnet...
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Garnet first seemed to complain about Steiner and now she came to defend him. Hilda wondered if it was proper to talk poorly, or rather, ‘joke’ about their most loyal knights to other nobles. It would make one’s defenses seem weak to other representatives. Thankfully, Hilda was simply a friend. Either way, Hilda had not meant to make Garnet so defensive.
She listened to Garnet’s expertise on eidolons. Garnet knew and understood more than her. There seemed to be an uncertainty among summoners of what they even controlled. It just felt more dangerous to Hilda and it made her worry for her daughter. “It is a great shame the Summoner people were lost. Their stories and interpretations went with them.” Such a cultural loss was damaging indeed. Especially for those who passed down their knowledge verbally. “The eidolons may not be able to be changed.” Perhaps that was her greatest weakness. Caring enough to not expect them to change and still loving their flaws. It was what allowed her to return to Cid, even after he hurt her and broke trust. “If they can’t change, perhaps it is best to try to understand their feelings. One does not control a friend, but simply let’s them aid in their own way. Or is this not the same with eidolons?” A friend was less likely to cause harm instead of a feral beast after all. But, Hilda knew not the true intelligence of eidolons or their emotional capacity.
“It provides me comfort to know Eiko is not alone in this type of magical learning.” Hilda admitted gently, a soft smile touching her lips. “If there is any way for me to bridge the gap, please do not hesitate.” She made eye contact with Garnet. She was wholly sincere. “I know that by the time you are blessed with children, more knowledge will reveal itself to you. It will be something you can share and bond over.”
Hilda took note that Garnet was struggling with the names. She wasn’t very good at them, was she? Oh dear. “I’m afraid neither Cid, nor I, carry weapons upon our persons.” She hummed gently in thought. Nor did she fancy herself a name that suggested she was some tool. “I shall think upon this matter.” She spared Garnet her discomfort at coming up with ideas. “When we meet again, I will review my options with you.”
Hilda was already gathering her herbs together. She gingerly scooped a bit in come bags. “Would five of each - potion, antidotes, and eye drops - work? Or do you need more?” Hilda needed to know so she knew how much to buy of each herb. Those items would also need different herbs. She turned to check out the other jars of herbs. “I recognize them because I often worked with them. They have a certain color, scent, and texture. Each one is different.” Hilda explained gently, “Are you having a little trouble? Are the ones you are looking for not the same name? Let me aid you, dear.”

[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet felt uneasy as Hilda lamented on the loss of the summoners. If only because she lamented the loss of their stories and understanding of the Eidolons. Garnet knew that was a heavy loss, but she felt like she had lost so much more. She had lost people/ She had lost her family. Her true family, who had risked everything to save her. Garnet knew that if she still had them, she would have been an entirely different person. Not even Garnet, but Sarah, the summoner girl from a village far away. But it was still hard not to feel a sense of true loss. "They are not all lost," Garnet affirmed with a small nod. "As long as Eiko and myself survive, the summoner race shall live on. We may not know all of their secrets, but Eiko was still raised by them, and grew up there, and I have more memories now than I did. We can rediscover what they knew. I... feel their loss all the time, but I will not allow them to be lost completely. Not as long as there are some of us who remain." Garnet knew that Hilda would understand, and that she hadn't meant it in that sense, but Garnet also felt the need to state her intention to preserve her race. She wouldn't let Garland, or Kuja or any of the others win. Her people had survived in her and in Eiko, and she had to make that count for something.
"I do not know. The Eidolons... I spent my entire childhood living in fear of that power that lurked inside of me. And even now, I can feel it. The feelings of power and hate some of the Eidolons have. And yet... Perhaps they do change. There is no question that under my control, they are less destructive. Bahamut nearly destroyed Alexandria from one summoning, Atmos consumed an entire district of Lindblum, Odin blew up Cleyra, under the control of greedier, more dangerous people than myself, but in my hands... They... are powerful, yes, but considerably less so. So perhaps... Perhaps my personality does have some input on their actions. Perhaps, over time, they shall change..." Her thoughts returned to Bahamut, and the hatred she felt emanate from him. "...Although there are some I shall never call... friend."
She smiled when Hilda was relieved that Eiko would have help. Garnet was still slightly sheepish about that. More because Eiko seemed to know far more than she did about the summons, and also because even if she didn't, Garnet couldn't imagine Eiko taking instruction from anyone. "I think it shall be Eiko teaching me," she laughed slightly. "But we shall work together. Eiko is my family too, and we are bonded with each other as well. We summoned Alexander together, our two minds and souls joining to bring him forth. I... think we shall be connected for ever more." It was true, but also perhaps a quick deflection from discussing children. After all, there was only one person Garnet wanted to father her children, and talking about him and her future felt inappropriate. Somehow, as if it was a thought she should keep private.
"It does not have to be something you carry. Merely, something that inspires you. After all, I do not carry daggers," she pointed out, wondering if her advice might help. Hilda didn't seem taken by any of the names Garnet had suggested, but perhaps she would think of one by the time they met next. Still, it was difficult. In retrospect, she probably could have picked a better name than 'Dagger', but it was her's now, and she couldn't think about giving it up.
"Five would help the Church greatly," Garnet nodded happily, glad that she had secured such resources. But then her puzzlement turned back to the herbs. "Thank you. It is just... there are so many, I do not even know what I am looking for..." Garnet admitted. Herbology was not her strong suite, and she had no idea what the herbs she had to find would even resemble in among all the others. In her time as an adventurer, Garnet had learned many strengths she never knew she had, but a skill for ingredients or cooking had never been one of them, and she was fairly certain that would extend to potion making...

[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]The topic made Garnet uneasy. She could see it clearly in her posture and on her face. Hilda had misspoke and been correct. “I apologize for my misstep. I meant no disrespect. I look forward to learning more of them through yourself and Eiko.” It was just Hilda got so nervous seeing a child learn magic on her own. Her own follies of doing the same had damaged her. What else could Hilda say? There was nothing she could do to ease the mass loss of an entire culture, nor the survivor’s guilt that came with it.
She listened to Garnet vent about the Eidolons. The more she listened it felt Garnet lived in fear of the past repeating itself. And perhaps a healthy fear of the power she wielded. It was good to have both of these, as long as it didn’t control and ruin your life. She really was a kind-hearted ruler, wasn’t she? Unlike the madness that befell her mother. “Your intuition will know how to handle them the best. You’ve a knack for it.” Hilda reassured her with a smile.
“When we return to Gaia, we should have more visits.” Royal visits were difficult to arrange due to the security needed and sheer manpower, not to mention the rigorous schedules that had to be worked around. Still, she hoped for companionship for her daughter. “It seems you have a much deeper bond with her than I could hope for.” She teased softly, a gentle smile on her face. “I might be a little jealous.” It was a joke. She was more than happy there was someone else who could be there for her.
Then she wondered who was there for her now. Was Cid taking care of her? Was she here on Zephon, alone? The thoughts made her uneasy, and she pushed them to the back of her mind. It would do no good to worry during this conversation. She should wait until she is back in her private chambers.
Hilda gave a nod of her head to look for the other herbs. “It’s no issue, dear. It takes a little bit of a trained eye to find them, unless you ask the aid to assist you.” She was able to scent them and eye their colors. She scooped what she needed into small individual bags, then went to the counter. There she had a small, polite chat with the lady. To her luck, it seemed she had everything else Hilda needed to make her potions. Hilda purchased the glass vials with the liquid bases she would need to seep the herbs.
The items were bagged and she began to collect up the supplies. “Do you mind helping carrying the supplies?” Then as Hilda was ready to leave she paused. “Do you have anything else you need? Or shall we find a spot to create the healing items?”

Garnet paused and flushed a little when Hilda apologised. Not just because she had prompted an apology from her Aunt, although she had done that and felt bad about it, but because of the rigid formality of it. Yes, Garnet was a Queen, and she was used to formality, but she also knew about friendship. She had travelled far and wide and seen how people treated each other when you forgot your title, how true friendship blossomed and what it meant. Forcing her Aunt back into a role where she treated her as a Queen and not a friend made Garnet feel guilty. "No, Auntie, I should say I'm sorry. I got... defensive. I'm sorry. It's just.... I feel like... I'm the last adult survivor of the summoners and the last heir of Alexandria. I carry two legacies, and I'm worried, if I make a mistake, if I forget that burden, they will slip away. They'll die forever. A-and I want people to know I respect that burden. I know it, I carry it, and I will do everything I can to never fail it," she explained, with a slightly ashamed nod.
Hilda spoke her intuition with the Eidolons, and Garnet had to privately wonder if she was right. After all, her mother and Kuja had used the extracted Eidolons, but when they had used them, they were barely controllable chaotic beings. With Garnet, they were part of her. They obeyed her and followed her commands and were much more controlled. Perhaps it was similar to how Garnet had her own Eidolons that obeyed her, and Eiko had her own, and they didn't cross over. Perhaps that natural intuition for some meant that Garnet had better control over them. It helped her feel a little more confident that she could do what was right for them.
"Absolutely. I am sorry. After Zidane... went missing... I disappeared into myself a little. I focused on the Kingdom and my duties but it was at the extent of my personal connections. I was... depressed, and feeling sorry for myself, and just kept making myself lonelier and making things worse. But when I return, things will be different. I will still be Queen, but I will also make sure that I live for myself also. That'll include seeing my friends. I once vowed that although one day I would be Queen, I would always be myself. I think it's something I'd forgotten, before coming here," she explained. And then she smiled slightly. "Although there is no need to be jealous of my bond with Eiko. She loves you as a parent. I think she still just sees me as a rival for Zidane's affections," she laughed a little.
She thanked Hilda and the store clerk for their help, and collected the bags. Garnet was, perhaps, not the strongest girl, being a Queen and raised royalty, but she had faced enough adventures to be able to carry the bags easily and gladly happy to help her Aunt. She smiled over at Hilda. "I think we should be ready. There's a space in the Church we could use. What do you need?" she wondered what implements Hilda would require. There was a basic kitchen in the church. Would that do? This part was definitely outside of Garnet's area of expertise.
