[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]It seemed somewhere in translation Hilda's words were misconstrued. She had meant for Garnet to take away that she was a capable Queen that had the power necessary to make the changes she wanted. If she wanted to make changes to how succession worked, then she could. But it would take time and planning. Then, she would have to defend those changes with those who did not agree with them.
Instead of working through what Hilda believed to be constructive criticism, Garnet shied away from it with an apology. She was still so young. It was easier to dream than it was to plan. “You didn’t offend me.” She drew her brows together. She gave a slight sigh. She was being too forward with her words now. “If you want something, then reach for it! You are Queen! You can make the changes that please you without anyone else’s approval. You just need a well thought out plan to put them in effect. It will take time, but it is not as impossible as you are making it out to be.” But the thing that Garnet mentioned could start civil wars. It could cause bloodshed, especially if they began to push those ideals on other nations. She had best be ready to deal with those consequences.
Lady Hilda listened to her concerns about Mikoto. “I think you put too much fear in this girl. Why must she walk Zidane’s or Kuja’s path? Now that she is getting worldly experiences, she will bloom into her own person. She has run into you. Who else has she also bumped into and affected her? Kuja may be keeping her by her side, but she doesn’t sound like she’s completely under his control.” She shook her head and looked upon her fan. “I have faith she will find something good in this world that she will want to hold onto. And once she does, I doubt Kuja's negative influence can sway her.”
Then, Garnet’s displeasure of Kuja was quite clear. No, it was farther than displeasure. It was her hate and fear that demonized the man to see him as nothing but a monster. And worse, it seemed Garnet was letting these feelings rule her. Almost more so than her love for Zidane.
Hilda felt a little ashamed and she fell into silence. Garnet insinuated Hilda had fallen under Kuja’s charm and did not see all that he had done…
But was that really true?
She understood the atrocities Kuja committed. And she may not have seen first hand the massacres as he traipsed about with Queen Brahne or the fires that destroyed this other world that would have consumed Gaia otherwise…
There was an ache in her chest. She felt tears sting her eyes and her throat tightened. She drew her fan up to hide her face as she looked away.
She may not have known what she got herself into when she was kidnapped at first. At least, the gravity of it did not sink in until much later. She asked to leave and there was laughter and mocking that filled the halls instead. How cold the pastel colors and candlelit shadows felt then. Was she safe to sleep? How far could she wander before she upset him?
Was there an escape? Or would she have to...
Her fear had grown over time. She could hear the cries of tormented beasts he experimented on. She had seen the chambers for experiments, torture, and even isolation when they were dirtied and full of terror. The magnificent beasts were reduced to little more than scientific specimens, if they were lucky enough to not be used as food for his dragon. It left her to wonder if she would be next in them.
She saw the trembling in the black mages at his beck and call. How they cowered when he was displeased. He could make or unmake them how he saw fit. How they did everything he said because he lied to them. Then, eventually he took away the lie that held their hope.
Then, there were times he wanted a companion to vent to. She would sit and quietly listen as he went into maddening tirades that reveal the hate and fear in his heart. The need for great power to overcome a greater threat. And his drive that nothing could stop him from getting that desire. It frightened her to hear of this other world capable of consuming others. How he was from this other advanced world...
How little she must have meant to him being a mere Gaian...
And yet, was Garnet’s view of his face - monstrous and evil - more true than the face Hilda saw?
Despite the monster, there were glimmers of humanity in him. Excitement in his scientific discoveries. Passion about the arts. He was polite to her despite the fear he struck. And she had even seen him at his most mundane - sleeping upon his parchment, his words half scribbled. Even the fear that beset the hate in him was very humanizing.
Should she be ashamed she couldn’t fully see him as a monster?
She simply sat in silence for a long while. It hurt and she was upset. And the fear fell through her again.
She did not voice any of this to Garnet. Not after the way she spoke. Instead, she simply took a deep breath and stood up. She crossed back to the aisle and bowed at the reverence of the statue, before turning to Garnet. “Of course, my dear.” It was simple and the most she could say without her voice trembling. “I do not underestimate him. But…” She stepped backwards towards the exit. “I no longer wish to be ruled by the fear of him. If I keep viewing him as a monster then I will forever fear him. I will never find peace.” She turned her back to Garnet. “And if we keep treating someone as a monster, and attacking, then they will keep responding as one.” Another bout of silence.
“Lindblum has always ruled with innovation and compassion. And when the wars are over, the monarchs each pay their due in order to make peace over our disagreements.” Lady Hilda was not stupid or ignorant. The man was dangerous. But wasn't it better to find peace and keep an eye on each other in the mean time, than continuously making threats of war that could instigate much destruction?
“If attacking him and bringing him to justice brings you peace, then I shall not stand in your way.” She curtseyed then. Garnet was not wrong in her feelings or conjectures. But she ruled as Alexandria ruled, with her emotions. Hilda did not state whether she would confront Kuja or not. Instead, she stood up from her position and simply spoke. “I will leave you to your duties here, and find sanctuary elsewhere.” She did not want to upset her god-daughter any longer. She felt staying would only provoke Garnet more.

[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet looked slightly ashamed when Hilda pointed out that she could make the changes she wished for. The problem was that Garnet didn't know if those changes were correct or not, and when she was Queen, it was almost impossible to find anybody to have a conversation with about her doubts. People always sought to reassure her, to tell her she was right to rule, but Garnet was so afraid that in her heart that wasn't true. She felt like she never knew what she was doing, like she was too young, too inexperienced to lead. But she knew now that airing those doubts to her Auntie would have the same impact as airing them to Steiner or Beatrix. They were doubts she had to keep private, for now.
"...I guess it's a concern for another day. It is fairly impossible right now, after all," she tried to joke lightly. "Alexandria is far from here." She still wondered what was happening in her absence. Maybe all of her doubts about whether or not there should be a Queen would now resolve themselves, since she had vanished and there was no heir. Maybe in that way, it would be better if she never went back...
She sighed. No, that was her wishful thinking again. Trying to find an excuse to stay when she knew her duties still awaited her back in Alexandria.
Hilda's faith in Mikoto was a surprise, given that she didn't know the genome. In fact, Hilda's faith in general never ceased to amaze Garnet. How could somebody have been through what her Aunt had been through and still believe in the good in everyone? She realised that, somewhat ironically given how differently they presented themselves, Hilda was a lot more like Zidane than Garnet ever was. Zidane would have had the same faith. Garnet... did not. She was afraid, she realised. She had seen too much and lost too much and she was terrified of it happening again.
"I will trust in your faith in Mikoto," Garnet nodded, wanting to mean the words she said, but knowing that her fear would threaten to overtake her.
The change in Hilda when Garnet spoke about Kuja was palpable. Garnet felt her heart tear in two. She felt awful. She knew first hand the trauma that Kuja could put people through, and she realised she had, inadvertently, opened that old wound for Hilda. She moved, her eyes glistening and damp from shame, and sat next to Hilda, where she placed a hand on her lap and looked utterly ashamed.
"Oh, Auntie, I'm so sorry..." she said quietly, and Garnet looked truly ashamed of herself. And maybe she was right, maybe treating Kuja as a monster was the mistake. But, Garnet couldn't help it. She was terrified of him and she always would be. And she felt the burden of responsibility pressing down upon her. She had to bring him to justice for all the people he had hurt. That was her responsibility, wasn't it? Not only as monarch, but as the person who's power he had used to carry out his wrath.
When Hilda rose to leave, Garnet hesitated, but rose with her. She didn't want her Auntie to leave. If anything, she needed her, now more than ever. She felt so lost, and Hilda was the closest thing Garnet could get to the advice of her elders, whether it usually have been her mother, Beatrix, Steiner, or Cid. She had always had guidance. And now she had none.
"Auntie, please... wait," she said. Garnet paused, looking at her for a moment, and then she reached forward and embraced her in a hug. It wasn't a gesture most made in public, not really, but the kind of thing a child might do to her Auntie behind closed doors. Or a peasant girl named Dagger who didn't have to follow formal etiquette. She held Hilda close, and became teary eyed. She breathed in that scent, Hilda's expensive perfume, the one that Garnet had always loved but never tried because it was so much her Auntie's scent. "I'm sorry. I'm just so scared of him. You're so kind and wise to rise above your fear, but..." Garnet hesitated. "He... violated me. He took my power and he used it to kill thousands. And every time... every time I close my eyes, I see those people dying," she explained, her eyes damp and tears flowing freely now. "A-and it's like, part of me is the one killing them. And in some ways, it is. Because it's my power. It's part of my soul. And I... I let him take it from me because I was scared and stupid and I went home when I shouldn't have. If I'd just been a bit stronger, I could have used my summons earlier. If I'd just been a bit smarter, I'd have stayed in Lindblum where I was safe. Instead, I walked into his trap and I gave him my power and he used it to kill so many and there's nothing I can ever do to make that right again." She released her Aunt, although her eyes were still damp. She brushed away the tears the best that she could.
Hilda was right of course, that when a war ended, kingdoms usually made peace. But there were negotiations. There was process. War criminals were tried by the winner. Kuja was doubtlessly a war criminal.
"I don't think anything will bring me peace," she admitted. "Zidane thinks as you do. That... Kuja is family. He... risked his life to save Kuja, back at the Iifa Tree. I didn't understand why then. I'm not sure I understand why now. I think that both you and he are so much wiser than I am." Another reason Garnet wasn't sure she was actually fit to rule, but that wasn't a debate she wished to continue.
"Please don't go," she said earnestly. "I-I mean, I do not think that you would appreciate the accommodations here. We all share a dormitory and there is rather a lot of snoring, although I am still certain Grace was wrong when she accused me of doing so..." Garnet trailed off for a moment. As if she snored! But that was a debate for another time. "But with your abilities, you would be most welcome here if you chose to stay. But even if you do not... your company... is appreciated. I have not seen any family for... a long time."
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Garnet hadn’t meant to open the wounds. Hilda knew it. But, Hilda didn’t want to show fear and tears in front of her. Not when she needed to project strength. She mustn’t run from the memories. And she should stand tall when needed by Garnet. The young lady embraced her and Hilda placed a protective arm around her. The other ran down her hair soothingly. She gave a soft shushing sound. As if she did not need to explain herself and all was well in this space.
Her heart went out to the young queen. It seemed she bore similar regrets to Hilda. Hilda surrendered an advanced airship to the dreadful man and it allowed him mobility. It aided in the ravaging of her regency and furthered the attack on Alexandria. She had done nothing to stop him. Pledging ignorance to the chaos of the world beyond his palace walls as the cause of her inaction seemed an insufficient explanation when she could see the horrors within them. Wasn’t it like she was the vehicle that helped move his plans forward? Isn't she partly to blame? Lives lost because of her?
Hilda understood Garnet’s guilt well, but she did not want to see the warmhearted girl beat herself up over it. “We can’t change the past. People try to make us forget it…” Like Garnet’s own adoptive parents, “and others, like Kuja, want you to live in it and remain fearful. If we do either then we shall never learn from it.” She said quietly, and she pulled Garnet away just a little to gently touch the other’s chin to look up at her. “Don’t trap yourself in the past or it will overwhelm you, my dear. He did some awful things to you and used the power he stole to commit atrocities. But you did not back away. You found your strength to stop him. We cannot bring back the lost lives, but we can make it safer for those who remain.”
Garnet stepped away from her. She reached out a hand to thumb a tear from the Queen’s cheek, before giving her a reassuring smile. “He wants you to fear him, as if he were an all-powerful sorcerer. The fear and the tears gives him the power he craves. Don’t give him something he doesn’t deserve.”
Hilda had a knowing twinkle in her eye, and her smile deepened just a little. “He is but a man. A very intelligent and resourceful man, but a man nonetheless. And, if I may conjecture, he is at a severe disadvantage here in a new world under so many watchful eyes.” There were her, Garnet, and the allies she mentioned. They had seen how he works. They now knew the signs and were ever vigilant. Plus, he would have to work on obtaining new resources, much like Hilda herself would. “Together, we can prevent him from causing further harm.”
“Me? Wise?” Hilda said humbly behind a hand. Then, tilted her head to the side as she clasped her hands together. “I cannot speak for Zidane. I know not his mind as you do.” She shook her head, though she could make some guesses as to his compassionate action for Kuja.
“Do you know the symbolism of a garnet?” She paused for a moment. “It symbolizes the crystallized life force of love. The stone itself is worn for protection to repel negativity and exchanged with others to represent affectionate wishes and security.” She studied Garnet again and her uncertainties. “You have the power to spread compassion and repel evil. I’ve seen you do it before and it seems you are willing to do so again.” A beautiful and strong queen she was and here she was, in this church, still providing aid to the people in the best way she knew how.
“Cid also affectionately names his ships after myself, partly because my name means ‘Shieldmaiden’.” No explanation was truly needed there. A woman who will fight to protect and shield others. She was surprised to hear from Kuja that the Hilda Garde I had endured the blast that shattered Alexander. It had been part of the reason his life had been spared. Kuja did not look so fearsome when he returned in tatters and quite shaken.
How ironic.
“Sounds like between the powers of a Garnet and a Shieldmaiden, the dreadful man should be frightened of us.” She gave a playful scoff and then held out her hands to Garnet. “Now, let us begone on this subject. It has upset us both when our reunion should have been much happier.”
“I most certainly will not be staying in the accommodations here. I would rather sleep in the library than listen to the ungracious snoring of another.” Some preferences simply couldn’t be changed, “But I did hope to render my services here until I have found a position as a governess or court lady. Maybe I will save a little more quickly since I’ve no Zidane to search for.” She teased Garnet gently.

[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet felt Hilda lightly brushing her hair as she held her close. It was such a comfort, and it made Garnet never want to break away. She knew that it wasn't appropriate. She was a Queen now, her days as a child were long behind her. The days of needing comfort from adults. She was the adult now. But, for a moment, it was nice. Hilda would never replace her mother, but it was nice to have an adult female figure that she could look up to. That she knew would love her, if needed.
She listened to Hilda's words. They contained wisdom, yes, but she thought they were much easier said than done. Deep down, she knew that it wasn't her fault so many people had died. It was like she had said to Hilda. Kuja had violated her. Ripped her power from her. How was Garnet supposed to know that would happen? She had no real understanding of her Eidolons back then. She didn't know who she truly was. But the fact remained. People were dead. Her people. Because of her mistakes. She realised that pain would never go away, even if she knew it wasn't truly her fault. She had thought she had beaten it. That she had evolved past it, but, seeing Kuja alive still, it had reopened those wounds. That fear within her of what he may do to her, given the chance.
Hilda was right though. Her concern had to be making it safer for the people who remained. Maybe THAT was why she was so afraid of him? "But that is why we must stop him. If he... attacks again... Can you imagine? Another Lindblum? Another Alexandria? But here, when we knew what he was? What he was capable of? I was young and naïve when he exploited me before. I am no longer those things. I won't, I can't let it happen again. Not when I know what he is. Not when I can stand in his way," she explained. Not that she had a plan, still. But she knew something had to be done.
Hilda's words about Kuja's power made her feel better, however. She was right. He was just a man. She had seen that. Powerful, but mortal. He could be defeated. He had been defeated. He should, really, be afraid of Garnet. If she united with the others, they could defeat him again. Couldn't they? But it was difficult. It was scary. "You're... right, Auntie. I will... keep watch on him. I will be prepared. He is at an disadvantage, and I have the advantage. Zidane is here, I am here, you are here, we are ready to stop him again if we need to. I just... don't wish for anybody else to be harmed this time. I wish to stop him before he can hurt others." It sounded naïve, she knew. Of course they all wanted that. But Hilda sounded as if she didn't quite believe that he was going to do anything bad again. Whereas, Garnet had no doubt that he would. It was in his nature.
No, that was too kind. Nature could be defied. Vivi was made as a weapon. Zidane was made as a weapon. Both of them found compassion, love, goodness. It wasn't in Kuja's nature. It was in his personality. In his choices. He wasn't evil by nature, he was evil by design. By his design. And she had no doubt that he would resume his evil ways at first opportunity, if he hadn't already.
She shook her head when they spoke of Zidane, saying how she didn't know his mind. Garnet couldn't hide a small smile and a laugh. "I love Zidane with all of my heart, but I am not sure I understand his mind either," she laughed lightly. His compassion and his soul would forever be a mystery to her, but perhaps that was why she loved him so much. The way he saw the world, how he helped anybody who needed it, and how he saw the good in everyone, it was so admirable. He was a thief, raised on the streets. By all logic, he should resent a spoiled princess, but he had loved her, protected her, guided her, and shown her so much. She might never fully understand her, but she knew that she would always love him.
She smiled lightly when Hilda told her about the meanings of her name. Not because it was news to her; it wasn't. Garnet obviously knew the symbolism of her own name. But more because it was the sort of story Hilda would have told her when she was little to bring her comfort. It was nice. It made her feel young once again, and that was... pleasant. She smiled, enjoying the story, such as it was. Hilda's name meaning Shieldmaiden was news to her, however, but she admired her Auntie's confidence.
However, she did have a slight correction to make. "Do not forget, Auntie, I am not just Garnet any longer," she answered. "I hope that you are right. That I spread... love and compassion, and that I can repel evil. But if I cannot, if Kuja attempts to harm anybody again, I am also a Dagger." She left it at that, because Hilda wanted to move on, and Garnet herself wasn't sure what that meant. She felt so much anger towards Kuja, but she wasn't a killer. She just... wanted to stop him. And she would fight if she needed to. She had proven that now, and it remained true.
Garnet smiled and laughed a little at Hilda's reaction to the threat of snoring. "I once thought the same. But on our adventure, I had no choice. After you have slept through Steiner's snoring, very little will keep you awake. And that's without mentioning the rather bizarre noises Quina could make in the night," she laughed. She wondered what Hilda thought of her, the young Queen, raised a princess, but experienced camping in tents and sleeping with others. She imagined it was a surprise to her. "I am sure that your services will be gratefully received, until you find your position," she smiled, ignoring the light teasing about how she wasn't going to have to save to find some lost love. She didn't want to ask about Uncle Cid. Did Hilda not miss him at all? She knew that their relationship was complicated. It was not... as simple as her own and Zidane's.
She obeyed Hilda's wishes and held her tongue about her further fears involving Kuja. But if Hilda could find her way into the court again, couldn't Kuja? Wouldn't it be possible that he'd work his way back up? Yes, Kuja was down now, but not out. Garnet knew that he could do anything. He had seemed utterly defeated before. And he had always bounced back, more powerful than ever. She would respect Hilda's wish, but her fear remained behind her eyes that their battle with the sorcerer was still only just beginning.
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]It seemed Garnet finally calmed down. However, the fear was still in her eyes. Her concerns were valid. If he attacked again, it would be devastating. But he would need to find a reason to put in so much effort. Last time, his life was at stake and his foe posed a vast amount of knowledge and magic. Unfortunately, he decided that his life was also worth more than everyone else’s. All the blood sacrifices to reach his goals didn’t appear to bother him. All the pain he caused others because he was in a race against time, Terra’s time and the plans of its master.
Perhaps that was why she was so eager to avoid conflict with him. To not give him a reason to start the devastation again.
She closed her eyes and remembered him returning to the palace. He was in near tatters physically and mentally. His usual clothes in shambles and his hair frizzed. He suffered obvious injuries all over, and pale complexion took on a sickly pallor. It was the aftermath of his foe getting the better of him. He angrily stated he was fine and just needed to rest. A part of her felt that he deserved such a thrashing, after the way he treated those around him. Yet, another part of her simply could not watch his pain as he laid himself out, seemingly dazed and partly shaken. Where he could so easily cast someone aside, it seemed she could not. She had nothing in mind except easing his pain, working her warm whispers of light magic to aid in his mending. She could hear his feverish mutterings of his concerns and where his plans were going awry…
“We won’t let him hurt anyone again.” She corrected Garnet reassuringly, shaking the visions out of her mind. She would not linger on the past. Garnet was set in her mindset, and Hilda would not feed her ideas that could put her in danger.
“Ah, yes. You are quite the dagger.” Lady Hilda chuckled at Garnet’s one-liner. She wondered if she learned it from the energetic Eiko. “Sharp and to the point.”
But she gave a soft sigh, “It seems you’ve more endurance than I. I refuse to sleep in such a state.” And for someone to see her without makeup on first thing in the morning! Heavens, no!
“I will do what is in my power to aid the people here. May I help with the errands of which you spoke?”

[attr="class,beacont"]
[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet was glad by Hilda's reassurances that Kuja would never hurt anybody again. She had been worried by her Auntie's thoughts. Hilda had seemed the type to forgive in the name of diplomacy, and Garnet knew that Kuja was no aristocratic noble who would approve of a peace accord. He would use every and anything given to him to his advantage, and she knew that he would exploit Hilda's forgiveness and use it to destroy her, and perhaps, even the world. Still, it seemed that Hilda was set in opposing his ways, and hopefully, she had given her Auntie something to think about in regards to Kuja's actions.
She did look a little sheepish at Hilda's comment about her 'Dagger' retort. Yes, okay, perhaps that had been a little silly. The type of one liner Zidane would have come out with on their adventures, not something a Queen should be saying to her Auntie. She was, truth be told, a little embarrassed. She had thought it was witty when she said it, but now she felt foolish. Like a child again. She supposed it was only natural talking to your Aunt to end up feeling that way, but, well, she was a Queen now. She had to remember that.
Garnet couldn't hide a light chuckle at her Auntie's dismay at shared accomodations. "Oh, I was quite the same. You should have seen me at Dali, when we first had to stay in an inn. There was only shared accommodations. I thought that I might faint!" Garnet smiled lightly. Of course, she had learned. She had adapted. "But, you may surprise yourself, at what you find yourself doing when you have no other choice. I did... so many things I had never even dreamed of on my journey. After that, sharing a room seems, well, rather pedestrian, if I'm honest," she smiled lightly.
Hilda asked if she could assist with any of Garnet's errands. Garnet paused for a moment, checking her list of what she had to do. "Well, I was going to head to the local store for some supplies. White Magic is useful, but not all of our members are powerful enough to cast Esuna, so sometimes it's beneficial to stock up on various remedies," she answered. "You are of course welcome to come with me. It's only a short trip to the nearest item store."
[attr="class","character-spring-1c"]“Crowns and Blessings”
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]She smiled at Garnet’s responses. She had grown into being a fine young lady with practicality and worldly knowledge. Hilda could not be happier. “Seeing the world on such a journey lends much appreciation to what we have, when we have it. I am glad you learned so many new skills.” And Garnet seemed to have also found that living like a commoner helped escape the trappings and responsibilities of nobility.
“It seems I will have to learn too. I think you will surprisingly find how resourceful I can be.” Hilda did not look it, but she could adapt as needed. Women of her beauty and refinement were usually thought of as only that - fragile, beautiful flowers without thought. They were pretty accessories. It was unfortunately an uncommon perception that such women also had intelligent thoughts in their heads, which led to many underestimating them. Hilda was blessed with both beauty and intelligence, and Cid saw it in her. That was why she was often left to handle the regency’s state of affairs while he worked on his engineering projects.
“Perhaps, I’ll even be as strong as you and become acclimated to the new situation. It sounds like I will be staying here for a spell, so I have not much choice.…” She hoped in her heart Eiko was safe at the castle. Garnet had not mentioned her, so it gave her a little hope. But a part of her would worry in the meantime. The most she could do for now was make herself stable, so that Eiko would have a safe place to rest if she did come.
Garnet studied her to-do list. “Would it stretch the church funds if I created the remedies?” It had been a while, but Hilda found she enjoyed touching its ingredients and imbuing her magic with each potion and remedy with a healing spell or intent to mend. “We could buy the supplies in bulk cheaply.” Also, if she made them, there would probably be more of it than if they were to outright purchase finished products.
She smiled and humbly inclined her head. “I would love to accompany you. Shall we be off?”

[attr="class,beacont"]
[attr="class,beatext"]
Garnet smiled a little as Hilda spoke about how her journey had led her to appreciate what she had and when she had it. She wasn't sure that was quite what she would have taken away from it. Hilda, it sounded, now appreciated the finer things in her life because she had lost them while captive by Kuja, whereas Garnet...
...well, it was different for her. She felt that she had learned what life was really about. She had seen the world. She had seen a better way of living. All the pomp and circumstance of being a queen, all of the formality and the rules, it wasn't what living was about. Yes, she had a responsibility to her people, and she would follow it through, but Zidane had taught her a better way of living her life. She had once told Zidane that without him, she would have lived a meaningless life. She knew that Hilda would probably balk at that sentiment. A royal leading a meaningless life? But it was true. Royalty, rules, leading, even being in power, it meant nothing. Not really. Not compared to the world she had seen. The bonds she had made. She had learned what was important. And it wasn't the fancy dresses or the castles or the plays. It was what she was doing now. Being there, helping people, forming connections, doing the right thing, no matter what.
"Oh, I learned many new skills, but... that's not quite what I meant," she smiled a little. "I mean, I won't pretend there were nights that I didn't miss my bed back in Alexandria, or wish perhaps for a private room... I mean, have you ever shared a tent with a Qu? It is... not for everyone... but, well, for all the hardships... for everything I lost, everything I went through, I wouldn't trade that time for anything. I learned so much. I grew so far. And now I think I know what's truly important." She hesitated. "No, not just important... You can be important, but live a life without meaning. I know now what makes life worth living. Camping... may not have been fit for a princess or a queen, and while I remember... losing sleep on hard floors, laying awake as Amarant snored or trying to pretend Steiner waking up early for guard duty hadn't woken me up by the clanking of his armour.... I also remember... staying up late around the campfire... Roasting food together... Laughing, joking, telling stories... Steiner and Zidane bickering like children, Quina cooking us the most incredible meals, Freya teaching me how to better wield my staff, Vivi and myself becoming rather competitive playing Tetra Master... And then, at the end of each night, resting my head on Zidane's shoulder as the moonlight shone down upon us... And in those moments... I don't think my life has ever felt more worthwhile." She smiled at the memory. It felt so far away now, even here. But even in Torensten, she had had similar moments. Moments of lightness and enjoyment with her fellow White Mages in the Covent, and of course, time with the others she had met beyond that.
"Maybe you will find the same?" She offered. "I know that it can seem absurd now, but I suspect that one day you'll look back on these days with fondness..."
"You can make... remedies?" Garnet paused. It was a silly thing to say. Of course there had to be an alchemical component to most potions and remedies. A way of manufacturing them. They weren't just harvested from dead monsters! But she had never thought about it before. She let out a slight laugh in surprise. "I guess I still have a lot to learn about the world," she laughed a little. "I think that sounds like a good idea. Remedies are very expensive, and the church doesn't make much in the way of gil. Anything to make them cheaper would help greatly," she explained.
"Of course. I'd love for you to come with me. Maybe I can show you how streetwise I've become. I know how to act like a regular peasant girl now, when shopping," she said proudly. Of course, Garnet's assessment of quite how well she'd learned to blend in was, perhaps, a little optimistic as ever, but she was still proud of how far she had come. "Come on, Auntie," she smiled, laughing a little as she led the way out of the church.

[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Sharing a tent with a Qu? She did not want to imagine how the marsh people spend their nights. They already had vigorous appetites and no ingredient was forbidden to them. Though she supposed the fear of having her arm in one of their soups was no less than the fear of ending up on another’s dissection table. But it seemed Garnet had quite the nighttime experience between Qu’s and Amarant’s snorings and clanking armor of dutiful nights led into a meaningful understanding with others.
Making connections with others and sharing special moments through simple bonding. Not through strategic alliances or marriages for resources and advantage. And not for military power or conquest.
Just pure and simple sentiment was in the Queen’s smile. Upon seeing it, Lady Hilda shared in her joy and could not help but smile back in fondness. She wished Garnet would forever hold on to those memories fondly. “You absolutely must tell me more.” She gestured for the other to join at her side. “Who is to say I have not found the same, my dear? I find a spark of joy in quotidian routines. Your smile will be the twinkle of my day.” Hilda was sure to make the most of her every moment. Or else, her role would have crushed her ages ago.
As they began out the door. There was a glow to Hilda’s complexion as the sun touched upon her visage. Mixing magic and alchemy was her favorite pastime. Just as much as using such concoctions to aid and provide succor to others brought her pleasure. “Someone must make remedies.” She chuckled softly at Garnet’s confused pause. “When I had time, I provided what I could to the church.” Her existence was dedicated to the people, including those who sought healing and protection behind cathedral walls.
“One never stops learning. It is part of the enjoyment.” She nodded dutifully as they stepped out onto the sidewalk as Garnet took the lead. “I could teach you how to make remedies.” The thought of sharing the knowledge made her smile. “In return, you may show me this ‘streetwise’.” Hilda gave a nod as she folded her hands in front of her. She stood chin level to the ground and proper postured.

Garnet smiled, but her cheeks flushed a little as Hilda asked to be told more. Garnet was fairly sure if she told Hilda everything that happened while camping to survive on a journey across the world, well, her Auntie would probably faint clean away. Mind you, Garnet was fairly sure that her Auntie would faint if she told her about that time Zidane had seen her ankle. Garnet probably would have fainted at that at one point in her life. The memory made her smile a little. "Oh, Auntie," Garnet smiled playfully. "I think some of those stories are better kept secret," she giggled. "Zidane did try to teach me how to use one of his daggers once. I thought I should at least learn, since they're my namesake, but, well, I was rather unsuccessful at it." She settled on that story, fairly non-scandalous and one she hoped her Auntie would accept. "I was not very good at... producing... strength..." she grunted slightly as she mimed the stabbing motion. Badly. It was obvious that Garnet had no talent for fighting. At least, not physically.
Hilda seemed confident that she had found a similar joy to Garnet. Garnet wasn't entirely convinced. If not just the effort Hilda still put into her appearance, or her attitude, or the fact that she had just used the word 'quotidian' in conversation. Garnet almost laughed at that observation. There was a time such a thing would have seemed as natural as breathing to her, and instead, now it stood out like a sore thumb. Sometimes, she wondered if she was more Dagger than Garnet these days. Or maybe she was just more experienced.
"Well then, I shall endeavour to smile often," Garnet replied with a smile to her Auntie. At least she could help in that manner, even if she was still largely lost as to what to do about the problem of Kuja, or how to get back home. It felt good to be able to do something to help somebody, at least. Well, she was always doing that, as a White Mage. But this was different. This was emotional support.
"I-I mean, of course," she stammered, a little embarrassed when Hilda commented on how somebody had to make remedies. "I guess... I just never... thought about it. We used to find them on monsters," she explained, and then she paled a little. If the monsters ended up with remedies (and gil), it must have been from fellow adventurers they had... ulp... eaten. She tried not to think about it too much.
"Oh, learning to make remedies sounds.... very interesting," she hesitated a little, imagining grubby ingredients and a big pot. Something like Eiko's cooking. But she HAD just been telling her Auntie how brave she was and how used to life outside the castle she had become, she could hardly admit to being squeamish now. "It is pronounced 'street smarts', Auntie," Garnet said proudly. Obviously she was unaware 'streetwise' was a term, because, well, despite her beliefs, Garnet was anything but.
For a moment she hesitated. How DID you teach somebody to speak more like a commoner? It had seemed easy when Garnet had learned it, after a little practice (which some might say was because she had never mastered it), but now she had to try and relay it, it seemed difficult.
"Well, the first lesson I learned was that you should be more casual," Garnet smiled, walking beside her Auntie. While Garnet wasn't exactly as poised as Hilda, she still moved with grace, albeit with a slightly girlish gait, her arms held out at her sides. She thought back to the hillside overlooking Dali. "For example, instead of saying 'I shall try', you should say... 'alrighty!'" she explained. Of course, she hoped it made it sound like she knew what she was talking about, rather than the truth, which was she was just parroting back what Zidane had first told her.
