Thinking of you, wherever you are I've returned from memories past, reborn from times past

There was quite a bit of time for Claire's training. Talented as her future self was, this was still her first time and she was only fifteen too. There was also the matter of being separated for a bit while being out here, though that was a story for another time, as what mattered was Claire was roughly where she should be. Not too far from the cabin, with no Bombs in sight! When she finally unleashed the Thunder spell, a current of blue electricity rapidly coursed through her body. In turn, Thunder came dowm from the sky and struck a nearby tree; singing it to the trunk. Claire's eyes widened in surprise, before a delighted expression graced her visage. "I did it, Mog..." she called out, though she was a bit drained. It took a long time to focus on that energy within, longer still to centre herself.
With Mog's congratulations, she noted he called her rival, which caused her to tilt her head to the right. A brief thought but she leaned forward, awaiting his words with baited breath. Snow was Serah's---fiancé? That last part didn't come from Mog, so she turned in the direction of the voice. There was an older woman there, with familiar pink hair, tied in a familiar hair style to her own. Claire listened quite intently, studying her. Sparing a brief look when Mog chose to cower behind her, in the end she resumed her focus upon...Serah. There was a mix of disbelief, as well as awe. The former dispersed quick enough, the later remained for quite some time.
"Pretty." was Claire's first word to Serah, the teen's expression softened and relief washed over her slow and steady. Serah was older true enough but she looked great, her future self hadn't failed in this regard. That made her happy, loosening her guard bit by bit, she closed the last bit of distance. Then hugged Serah slowly, "I'm really happy you turned out so well!" she began. "Before I got here, I was at the hospital, talking with Mother, she had embraced me tightly while instructing me on what to do in the future. When I opened my eyes... I was in the cabin."
Claire hadn't even gotten to speak with the doctors after, as her story went. Still, she knew that said discussion, on that level; was likely their last as Mother and daughter. Not having time to prepare at all, she'd been whisked here and forced to think on her feet. Only, it didn't seem like she had to do much at all. Mog was there for one but it was clear they weren't expecting this version of her.
"So...how old are you right now, Serah?" Claire asked after some time had passed. She was trying to handle all this change best as she could. Given she had a fiancé, she reckoned that her sister was probably graduated from university right now. That would excuse her future self's sacrifices quite nicely if so. Though she wasn't sure what she would do in the present, well...besides eat. Claire was getting hungry, "Mmm, I think a good stew would be nice. Since we've got a cabin out in the woods to ourselves." Claire's decision was a simple one, to not put much burden on her sister.
"Oh and when we're done, I'd like to see the city here. Mr. Caius mentioned it was recovering after a recent disaster. I hope the people are doing better. The farmlands seem to be fine at least." given the prevalent scents not far from their little cabin in the woods. Claire was in a good mood at least. Perhaps because she'd finally been able to use her first spell. Perhaps because all her worries were put to rest. Now she was just her bubbly self, wanting to run about and see as much of this new world as possible.

Mog was very much grateful that Serah had not seen those bombs, he was always grateful that the Caius that was not his Caius was there to help her. He was able to reunite with the young Claire later and they were able to all pretend nothing at all had gone wrong. Claire had simply come to master the basics of Thunder magic…. And almost learned all about Serah’s fiancé. That was all She needed to know!
Serah, being thoroughly thrown by her sister calling her pretty, allowed Mog t come out from his hiding place and float among the pair.
”Congratulations kupo! I’ll just… leave you both to your reunion, I’m sure you have a lot to talk about, I’ll be right here if you need me kupo!”
Though he said that Mog did not actually leave. He simply began floating around the area keeping an eye on his two masters as well as doing various miscellaneous things like playing a flute or banging on a small pair of drums. Serah meanwhile was, as stated to busy blushing at her sisters’ statement to resume her scolding of Mog. Claire had called her pretty; did she hear that right? It was not as if Lighting had never complimented her before of course. But not like this. Not with that expression on her face as if she were admiring her. She was so surprised in fact that she at first did not notice Claire’s move to hug her. But once she did, she smiled warmly and returned her sibling’s embrace with one of her own. Though what she said as they embraced floored her.
‘I’m really happy you turned out so well!’
She had to force herself not to tear up in happiness from the words Claire said. They scored a critical hit on her heart in a very real way. It was the kind of things she always wanted to hear from her sister. She always wanted Lighting to be proud of her, happy for her and what she was. It was all thanks to her and the sacrifices she made to ensure she could grow freely. She would forever be grateful to her for that. But…. It also in a sense made her glad. As worried as she could not help but feel that she deserved this second chance. If anyone in the world deserved a chance to live a peaceful life it was Claire Farron, it was Lighting.
”it’s all thanks to you… or… it was thanks to you, you’re the reason I could become the woman I am today. Thank you… that… means a lot”
She frowned at the mention of there mother. So, the last thing Claire now remembered was that night so long ago. The last time they saw their mother alive. Some kind weird age and memory shift had happened. She did not fully understand the workings of this world yet, but it was already getting more annoying to her than her previous run in with time schengens. She knew the Historia Crux was a pain in the butt to deal with.
”So you really don’t remember anything after…. Well you did a great job keeping to mom’s wishes!
Serah’s efforts to reassure her sister of her future would of course be dashed by Mog quickly popping up behind her with a quickly thrown-
”Lies kupo!”
Which was immediately followed by Serah smothering the little puff ball in her arms.
Why you! You’re really begging for a beating aren’t you!”
Unfortunately for Claire she had not been the only influence Serah’s life. A certain fiancé had been showing through more and more lately alongside the teachings of Lighting. It was… an interesting mix to say the least.
”Don’t listen to him, you were an amazing older sister”
”I never said she wasn’t kupo….”
A glare from the pinkette was enough to bring the moogle back to silence. Just in time for Claire’s question of her age. To which Serah brought a thoughtful hand to her chin, though said thoughts were not regarding her own age.
”I’m twenty two sis. Hmm… if the last thing you remember is the talk with mother then…. Your fifteen right?”
Why was Serah able to decipher her age from that memory? Well after all that was the age…. That both their lives were turned upside down, changed forever. It was the last time they had been able to talk to her.
She was able to smile at her choice of food though, to choose something so simple, it was so Claire. She was sure she was thinking of her when she made the choice.
”Very well stew it is! I brought ingredients back with me, along with my other stuff… we’ve got a pot back and the cabin and we’ll get everything started!’
She gave a wink to her sister, excitement clear in her features. Even if her sister was younger now she was still feeling better. It was time to celebrate! And the best way to do that was a nice meal as a family. She picked up her supplies once more and they were off to begin their meal. On the way back though there was one more surprise in store for Serah, one she really did not want to have to deal with again. One she wanted even less to be anywhere near her sister.
”Oh of course sis! We can have a full tour, they have been through a hard time lately but there steadily recovering and.. C..Caius?!”
Her surprise was evident in her voice, if not the double take she did right after. She had bad memories of the man named Caius, even if she understood his pain. Even if she understood his plight. He had still been a central figure in making her life miserable for a time. Because of that… she was in absolutely no rush to deal with him again.
”D…did you get a last name? Please please please tell me it’s not Ballad!”
Serah was freaking out, worrying. With this weird Crux they were in the version of Caius here, if it was her Caius could be from any point in time. But from any point in time, he was not fond of one person in particular and that was her sister!

Mog was quite the smooth operator, slipping out of the conversation in a cool fashion. At least he had the means to amuse himself, which in turn, kept Claire's spirits up too. Having her sister thank her, while weird given her perspective, Claire understood. That understanding, was thanks to Mog, as well as Caius. Inferring anything else based on their exchange was simple enough. Even if Mog didn't speak up with the truth, she knew that she didn't keep to Mom's wishes. Thus, she had an embarrassed, yet somber smile upon her lips. "I am fifteen, it's still a bit surreal. Last I saw you, I was trying to get you not to run so much." there was a faint giggle before she shook her head.
As for being an amazing older sister, she didn't seem too convinced. It lacked qualification, as Claire could see certain aspects that would merit such praise. On the other hand, there were definitely lacking areas in her opinion too. Thus, she wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened to Caius, especially considering how much older Serah was! Of course she'd have memories that Claire knew nothing about, good as well as bad. The best solution was to set the record straight and talk about it...
Well, that plan would have to wait. Serah seemed to know Caius, her reaction...wasn't good, which puzzled Claire. Furrowing her brows for a moment upon mention of the last name 'Ballad', she became contemplative. "He didn't give me a last name, actually."
"I really don't think you have much to worry about, Serah. Mr. Caius is a really good man. Sure, he might be a mercenary now, playing at being a hero by working for free. Maybe native denizens of this world really helped him out? Being an Offworlder seems way harder than being a guardian." Claire admitted with a sigh.
"I felt really bad for him. He had met someone he'd known before coming here but due to the way time works, the person he reunited with... didn't even know him. That's why I feel it's important that we be honest with each other, even if it might hurt a little. I'll go first." she stated before resting her left hand on her hip and raising her right index finger.
"Mog has already shown me what the future me looks like. It was nice to see that I looked cool but...I barely recognized myself. I can only guess that's because I didn't honour Mom's wishes after all. I didn't have the intention to if I'm being honest. I didn't want you to lose your childhood, I made you a promise when Dad died after all." confessing like this, made Claire feel better, as she wanted to keep an open mind.
"I can only guess that I went too far, not taking the time to take care of myself. Not having Mom around, even if it was something as simple as her combing my hair out just right. It really did make a difference and even though I ended up looking like Mom, there was none of her charm, nothing inviting about me. So, I'm...sorry, Serah. The future me that you know, that...isn't the me standing here at least. I don't intend to be a burden to you but I'd like to hang onto my childhood, since I can. This world seems fun, let's make the most of it and maybe, we can leave it better than we found it."

Serah rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment at Claire’s playful statement. In truth she had been running around a lot in recent years, always chasing after and trying to help her sister. She wanted to stand at her side more than anything. She did not think that would be achieved because the Historia Crux had a bad since of humor but well… here they were.
”Well to be honest… I do still run around quite a lot..., I swear it's like I open up every chest I see”
She smiled, giggling right along with her sister. It was the kind of thing she had always wanted to be able to do with her sister. Just stand around and talk with each other, enjoy each other’s company. Lighting had been an amazing influence for her, she made her the woman she was today. But she couldn’t deny that she could have done a bit better on the emotional side of things, Serah wouldn’t have called it neglect (because she was far to kind to) But she certainly wished they could have had more time together, just the two of them. She knew well it had all been for her but that just made her feel guilty. To know she was the reason her sister was never able to have a life of her own? It pained her.
Well, giving Snow glares like she was about to get him with the hilt of her gunblade was all her, but past was past.
If there was one thing Serah was certain of though, it was that Claire was an amazing older sister. For all her flaws she had taken care of her, raised her, saved her life. To their world Lighting was a savior, but she had always been one to Serah.
Snow was her hero; they both were her saviors. She would hear no argument on that, and just to set the record straight and alleviate the doubts her sister had? She would get started on their communications.
”You saved my life, you know…. I ended up getting marked”
She let that hang in the air for a moment, there was only really meaning to be discerned in this context from being ‘marked’ She would let her sister reach that conclusion before she continued. As she signaled for them to begin there walk back, she would continue once Serah did.
”I finished what I was ‘supposed’ to do…”
Those words contained a heavy, HEAVY dose of sarcasm behind them. Those memories were not the most pleasant for her. At least her dream was nice.
”And I was frozen… but you and Snow refused to accept that for even a minute. You went on your own journey. You both went through so much, all so you could save me”
She looked down at her sister, her face was serious but emotional. It was clear recalling those memories was a mixed bag.
”So if theirs one thing you never have to doubt, it’s whether you were a good big sister, you don’t have to let it influence you now, but I don’t want to leave the wrong impression… you were an inspiration to me Claire, your why I’m like this today… I’m sorry this must be way to much to put on you at your current age”
She rubbed the back of her head, but then a crafty grin replaced those serious features. She knew just the way to lighten things up.
”Oh but I’m afraid you already gave Snow your blessing, and theirs no take backs in this family~”
She gave a giggle, before doing a playful spin. One she should add she did in perfect sync with Mog and in no way had they been practicing a lot before she went off with Lumina.
No, totally not.
The more information she got on the Caius Claire met the more concerned she became. She could not deny that part of her was worried for Caius as well, even if the brunt of it was on her sister. Yeul did not remember him? That was a worrying prospect. They had met many versions of the seeress on their journey, but everyone knew Caius in some form. He was her guardian after all, her protector through all time. The only one he left was the one from Noel’s time, but from what Noel told her and from what she had seen herself he had been there to. So why? It was a sad fate, one she wouldn’t wish on even that man who had caused so much pain in her own life. Maybe if she got a chance she could… help him?
”I see… your right, it’s definitely important to be honest with each other”
She crossed her arms and sighed as Claire made her peace. It was not a bored sigh of course; it was one of understanding. She was after all talking to the person who had been through what she spoke of, she did not want Claire to get the wrong understanding of herself, it was why she had told her that story. But she was not going to lie and say everything was perfect ether. That would do more harm in some cases.
”You kept to your promise to dad more than you did mom’s wishes by a landslide that’s for sure…. For a long time at least. I do not want you to misunderstand though… it wasn’t like you didn’t want to; I think… you felt like you couldn’t. It was just the two of us and you did not want to put the troubles of the world on me. So instead… you put everything on yourself. You uh… kept doing that by the way, it was a really hard habit for you to break even a little”
She was apologizing? She did not have to do that. Serah had always wanted Claire to have a childhood. She had always wanted her to be able to experience what she never could. Because of that she couldn’t help the warm giggle that escaped her lips.
”Trust me, your more similar than you think… I forgot how silly you are about things, then and now.. Claire.. I’m the adult now, in any case… you will always be my sister, guess I’m just the older one now”
As haunting of a prospect as that was for her, she would not that to Claire, no she only got the bright smile that showed the confidence she had in this route.
”Yeah your silly… I’ve wished for so long that you could have the same childhood you let me have. Oh but... were sticking to mom’s words this time ok? Me and you… together, right?”
But please gods do not let her fall for Caius!
As they approached the cabin once more Serah stretched and placed her ingredients neatly against it’s wall. She would get them out first and then put the rest away neatly once she was done cooking. She looked back to her sister and Mog with a bright smile, full of the hope she had for the future, of the excitement she had for coming days.
It didn’t show the god awful worry that her sister had gotten the hots for that brooding idiot!
”Who’s ready to eat?
The moogle spinned in the air with excitement, after all Serah’s food was better than any restaurant!
”I’ve been waiting on it all day kupo!”
Yes they were together again, one big, happy family.

"Does this world have honest to goodness treasure chests? Not the treasure spheres we had back home...?" Claire looked pretty excited by that, as she loved messing around with people's spheres. They were the perfect vehicle for a prank or two. Not that she was a thief, oh no. She just liked to leave surprises in them ontop of the items already placed. Thus, the glint of mischief was clearly in her eyes. This excitement and earnest enthusiasm faded when Serah spoke up about being marked.
That was a harrowing thought, something she could never prepare for, even with the best laid plans. An absolute, worst case scenario, a nightmare... it made her quiet but tense. As Serah continued, she mentioned the journey her future self took. It sounded like something she would do. Perhaps her future self wasn't so different in that regard. In the end, it Serah had reassured Claire of what mattered. Thus Claire smiled, rather widely at that. Full of relief, she stood up straight now and inhaled deeply.
"I feel much better after hearing that. It sounds like you've got a pretty good fiance, too. I mean, if he went through such a harrowing ordeal to save you. It's...really romantic and best of all, it sounds like you've gotten everything I wanted for you. I'm so happy, I've got no regrets on this front. In fact, I hope I get to meet your fiance sometime, ah... preferably the erm, one from your time." she could only hope that most Offworlders were at least their most future selves upon arrival. It'd be a bit too painful if they were plucked from their lives the way she was. Then again, even a few years to...perhaps a decade, could make a difference too.
"Ah, maybe it's selfish to want to see him here. It would mean plucking him from our world, in your time..." well she wouldn't worry too much, seeing her sister spin about. It looked oh so familiar, even Mog was doing it and thus even though she playfully rolled her eyes, she had a faint smile.
Once she'd made her peace, Serah replied in kind and Claire gasped in turn. Her sister was...pretty perceptive, when it came to reading her intentions. There was this look on Claire's face, that screamed "How did you know?!" in such a youthful affair. It forced Claire to cross her arms and look to the side.
Serah did seem to take her selfish request well, really well even. To the point she thought Claire was being silly. It did make her curious, even if she was embarrassed. "Mom's words are still the last thing I remember. I was being held in her arms before I got here. It is true that I did think that I couldn't let you take some of the burden. That's because... you're very talented, Serah. It'd be a crime to let your academic talents go to waste. I only had to hold it down until you got through High School, that's what was on my mind. Then it'd be fine to work together more, as equal adults. I'm not surprised I took it too far though, I could see the results, thanks to Mog." she confessed before concluding, "I'll follow her last words, her will." she looked down, closing her eyes for a moment as she resolved herself.
"Ah but don't worry too much about being the older one now, Serah~ Mom never had to worry because she had me around. I'm quite capable, yep! Besides, I think I'd like to go to school in this world and continue learning magic. Seems like I might have an affinity for Thunder spells, that's so cool~" yes, in her own way she wanted to reassure Serah that everything would be fine. There was an air of confidence that was familiar.
The walk to the cabin thus, was quite peaceful, for it seemed Claire had a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. Now, she looked around with wider eyes and much more enthusiasm. Once Serah got everything together and prepared their family dinner, she'd have to concur with Mog. "Mmm, I haven't eaten at all yet, so I'm excited too." Claire began after Mog spoke up.
"Not that there was time to worry about my stomach. Mr. Caius had this Gunblade, it kind of looked like the one the future me had but more...advanced, maybe? He was so fast, like woosh~ He told me that he was a part of the Dragonblades Mercenary Guild. I can't believe there's honest to goodness guilds in this world. I hope there's an Adventurer's Guild, once I've mastered magic I'd definitely join up with one. Adventurer's get paid to help people and they get to leave the towns or cities they're stationed in. That's better than being a mercenary or a soldier."
Claire was largely swept away with the wonders and intrigue of Zephon. With such a zeal to live life, it'd be difficult to keep her grounded. Especially as she was so much more animated now. "Since the Dragonblades are in Provo, I'd like to make him something as thanks. Since you're really good at cooking Serah, could I get your help, please? It's just... even though Mr. Caius is really strong, I can't help but think of him like a lost puppy somehow. Maybe I can make him one of those shirts he mentioned too." she giggled at the thought, thinking he'd be really shocked to receive such a gift.

The fact Claire was interested in the treasure chests thrown about did not surprise her. Even adults they both opened every treasure sphere they could see. Claire was a weird mix of protective and mischievous at this age. Of course, as she grew older and stuck to her goal of raising and protecting her that part of her gradually faded away. She had a feeling that, since she did not have to worry about her protection now... she would probably see that side of her sister flourish more if she stayed like this. One might expect her to be worried about what her sister could get into, and she was. But she was happier that after all this time her sister could let loose and live her life. She could be herself and marvel at the things around her the way she had made sure Serah could. It helped that she absolutely wanted to go on a treasure hunt with her.
”That’s right! Here their actual chests! Usually leftover from transports and abandoned, well... that is what I have been assuming anyway. You must be careful though, some are booby trapped! So you’ll have to be careful if you’re looking to mess with people sis”
Serah seemed to take the news of her marking much better than she expected, she was relived at that. Her only intent had been to reassure her sister after all. Though the real surprises for her was how well she spoke of Snow. It took a long time for Lighting to warm up to Snow, to trust him. In the beginning she hated him, did not want her to have anything to do with him. For Claire to speak so positively of him now from the start… She even wanted to meet him! It just warmed her heart so.
”Knowing Snow, He’s probably already trying to find a way into this world to get to me. Considering what he’s been able to do before… I have no doubts you’ll end up seeing him eventually”
Serah’s only reaction to the implications of what Claire stated, of a different Snow than the one she knew showing up, was a brief frown crossing her face. It was there for no more than a moment but likely caught by the eagle-eyed younger sister. She crossed her arms and forced a smile in that moment, nodding.
”Oh I’m sure it will work out, he always finds a way, He’s my hero”
A reminder was given, one she already thought about before, of how selfish her want Snow to be here was. Taking from his world, his time. Nervously she rubbed her arm as she thought about it. Was it right for her to wish for such a thing? Was it right for her to wish that any of her friends to be here? She could not help but feel everything would be so much easier to deal with if she could rely on them. Was it wrong of her? Was it..?
…..
No
Then a smile spread across the pinkette’s face, and she shook her head in denial of what Claire said. For anyone but Snow perhaps it would be selfish of her to want it. But the connection she and Snow shared was special. If one of them were not there life just wasn’t the same. She knew she would do anything, everything to be with her again. She knew Snow would do all that and more. To Serah she knew he would cross time, cross worlds… cross anything he had to in order to get to her again. She would do the same. That was just the kind of love they shared.
”If it was anyone but Snow… you’d probably be right, but that man would go to the ends of the earth and beyond for me, I’d do the same for him… see it’s not selfish sis because… there’s no where we’d rather be than with each other”
She smiled warmly, confident in that statement, confident that there love could transcend anything, even the situation they now found themselves in. They would always find there way back to each other.
The end of the world could not keep them apart, this would not ether.
She could only chuckle at Claire’s surprise. Of course, she knew her sister, they were siblings, she knew everything about her older…younger? Sister! The response she gave was a knowing wink, grinning at how well she knew her. As for her academic talents going to waste well… to that Serah had a nice little surprise for her sister, one she would likely get a thrill from.
”You’ll be glad to know… In the current time I am a teacher! I even have my own students I’ve been teaching for a while now, I think I’m quite good at it!”
One could tell by her smile, Serah was immensely proud of her work. Proud she was able to influence young minds and help lead them down the right path. Help them grow up into the people they wanted to be. She teaches them about the past, to help them face the future!
”We’ll work together now, side by side… we’ll have to in this new world”
Yes, Serah knew better than anyone just how capable Claire was, how resourceful. Her mention of an affinity for Thunder magic caused Serah to glare in Mog’s direction, the moogle’s only response an innocent whistle, Serah sighed, then chuckled at his antics.
”I can teach you some things to, you know! But I would hardly consider myself a master. Let’s spend some time together, ok? Me and Mog will help you find the perfect school for you once we’ve caught up!”
Getting back to the cabin Serah would quickly begin attending to her pot, her ingredients gathered she would begin working on her meal before long the inviting smell of it all wafting all throughout the area. Mog was already a victim of the aroma! As she worked her magic her magic she listened to Claire continue speaking of ‘Cauis’ He had a gunblade now? Weird… maybe he needed a replacement once his dragon chaos heart thing got blown up? Joining some guild though sounded… not at all like the man she met. The Caius she knew worked alone, using his own power to protect Yeul and make his goals a reality. Maybe being beaten by her and Noel had taught him a lesson in team work? Well, at least the name of the guild fit the guy. Fighting that dragon was… well, chaos! She wouldn’t bring any of her worries up though, she didn’t want to ruin Claire’s fun. Even if she was getting a little… to attached for her tastes.
”Well I do know something LIKE a Adventuers guild, the two leaders go on trips all the time.. oh that reminds me! She gave me a gift, for you”
Serah pulled out the key she had gotten from Lumina, holding it out for Claire to see, then placing it in her hand.
”So Claire, how would you like us to have our own place while we figure everything out? My friend in that guild, Lumina is her name, gave this to me, she said I could let you use her home so you have somewhere… better than this cabin to stay in, somewhere closer when I'm working with her to”
And she wanted to give Caius a gift? Oh sure she’d give Caius some of her food alright! Lace it with some slime essence and behemoth fang while she was at it, give him a real taste of how she felt about…
She took a deep breath, no, no, this was Claire’s gift, it would not do to ruin it for her. Maybe a mandrake instead?
Claire was right though, the guy was DEFENTLY a lost puppy.
”Of course Serah, I’d be happy to tell you everything I know! As for a shirt well… that might take a bit more time”
Do not think about Caius Serah, just think about it as time with your sister. Wonderful… beautiful time with her sister….

Thinking of you, wherever you are I've returned from memories past, reborn from times past
⚡
"I just pictured it..." Claire immediately replied, only to visibly shudder as she wrapped her arms around herself. Not that she could blame people for booby trapping their chests. After all, chests weren't so easily made unlike treasure spheres. That'd be her loss until she could use the right magic to protect herself. Though that took a bit of wind out of her mischievous sails.
Well, she could set that aside and learn a bit more about Snow. True enough, her sharp eyes caught that frown. It seemed Serah hadn't considered the possibility of her fiance being a different version. Fortunately for Claire, she'd had this discussion with Mr. Caius already. In that way, seeing her little BIG sis frown like that, was more like the kid sister she knew. Ah but there was one thing distinctively different. Serah called Snow her Hero. Naturally, this caused Claire to raise her left eyebrow but she didn't interrupt the heartfelt explanation.
"I have to admit, I'm kind of jealous. To think you'd find someone other than your big sister to be your hero..." she paused for dramatic effect. "...it makes me loathe to give you up. After all, future me, is future me. The only Claire that matters, is the one present~" she continued with a confident smirk.
"If he's truly that heroic and it's the same Snow as our world version, albeit from your timeline, instead of mines, then I'll be sure to test his worthiness!" her smirk widened just a bit, waiting to see Serah's response to this ploy. Big as she was now, if she knew her sister, this was sure to get something out of her. Plus, it turned out that her little sister had become a teacher. Claire blinked, then leaned in closer to stare in awe. "You really have become everything I wanted for you. I think I can accept having a shabby hair style and no fashion sense..." she declared before taking the time to enjoy her food once served.
She'd never imagine Serah being the one to teach her stuff. This really was the perfect opportunity... "Actually, if you're going to teach me anything, I'd like for you to teach me how you cook so well!" given Serah was always better at her in this regard, Claire had to take advantage of this. It was said that the key to a man's heart was their stomach, Claire had no doubt that must have impacted Snow. Not that she had any targets or such in mind. It was just a handy skill, especially to make good first impressions. New kids always had something to prove, no one would expect to suddenly be treated to some sweets.
Based on Claire's current assessment, having a teacher's help would make her new school life easier. "I'm in your care, Serah. With you by my side, I'm sure we'll find the perfect school. Ah but just in case, I thought I'd get some suggestions from a seasoned veteran. Mr. Caius has been in this world for two to three years now. Have you been here that long too? I mean, you know someone that's like an adventurer." for a moment, her eyes after looking at the keys in awe, now looked down to her open palm where Serah placed the keys in question.
"This... Lumina, Brilliant Light, Great Light... That's a really pretty name. Ahem, she must be really successful and kind to offer her home. I wouldn't want to turn down her kindness, especially as I'd like to meet her sometime. Ah but you said there's two leaders, so is the second you or... does she have a partner?" there was so much Claire wanted to ask right now. An honest to goodness Adventurer?! One who Serah was working with!? What sort of awesome adventures was her sister having in this world, anyway?
She'd nearly forgotten that Serah offered to help with the thank you gift. Ah, that wouldn't do, she'd settle her wild imagination a bit and ground herself in practical. "Mr. Caius told me about some of the other territories on Zephon. It's fine if this gift takes some time, it'll be something we can do together. I'm guessing this world doesn't have sowing machines, so I'll have to do a bit of the embroidery manually. Since I didn't want to trouble Mother, I learned how to do that as some of the many chores I did. Imagining the cost of constantly replacing my dresses..." Claire rapidly shook her head.
"Actually, so long as we can get the materials, I could probably make my own outfits." Claire was practically glowing, with a consistent shimmer in her eyes. The look of a fun challenge that enthralled her, despite cupping her chin with her right hand. There was a kind of energy in the air about her, though it wasn't the fowl thunder clouds that plagued Lightning at least.

I'm not an army of one
She could only pat her sister’s head with a smile as she imagined the potential results of a booby-trapped chest, she could not help but a giggle a bit at the prospect of one of the traps getting one over on her sister, teenage form or no. But of course, in practice it would be to much of a risk. She would have to make sure Claire at least knew Cure before she was left on her own again. Knowing how her sister was at this age... she would be careful, but that curiosity would still be there, so she would need to be able to recover herself.
”Don’t worry sis, I know a bit of healing magic I can teach you, you’ll need more than just thunder based spells after all! You have a way to attack, but you should have a way to recover to”
So, the next chance she got she would do just that. Claire was probably having a lot of fun for now just knowing the bit of magic she had now, she would need time to master it is use anyway. Speaking from experience however the more she could learn the better off she would be if she did run into trouble. If she needed someone for the more physical aspects of combat however… Well with Snow not here they would have to find someone else for that. Though if she was being honest…. The idea of Claire sticking with magic made her feel a lot better, she would have no issues if Claire were still in her older, experienced form… but she was not, at least not as far as combat was concerned. Because of that if Claire were going to get into trouble, she would prefer she was able to defend herself without coming to harm. It helped that magic tended to be so flashy it was sure to keep her interest.
…..She never thought the day would come when she was the more combat experienced sister…. This whole situation was crazy.
Claire was jealous of Snow? No, jealous she would call someone other than her sister her hero. Well, she could not help that could she? That was just how he was to her. Snow was there for her emotionally when no one else was, he did more than just protect he, he supported her, helped her strive to grow and be better. With Snow she had always been able to spread her wings in whichever direction she wanted. He was her hero in so many ways, there was just no one else who could fill that role, not in the same way. Claire of course had her own place in her heart. Claire was so many things, Claire was her second mom, Claire was her big sister. Claire was her savior. So many things, things her sister was unlikely to understand right now. She was being such a diva about it though, she could not help but find it cute. So instead, she leaned down to her level and brushed back her hair a bit with a smile. She was so worried about being the big sister, yet it was something that came natural to her. The role of the caretaker, the mother, the big sis… it was as natural as Lighting had been at it. Though perhaps just a bit less grumpy. After all, Claire had raised her, it was only natural.
”Well it’s like you said sis, this is the you that matters right? I guess you’re going to have to stick to your magic training so you can be my heroine hmmm? Oh whatever will I do without the witch Claire to save me?”
Oh yeah, Serah could tease to. It was also her way of encouraging her younger sister. She did not want her in danger sure, but she knew how Claire was. Danger found her or she found it. So, the best she could do was keep her safe and make sure she could defend herself. She was going to test Snow huh? She couldn’t help but in vison how it would go in her head, She giggled at the idea.
”When it comes to some things… you just never change sis”
She would let the implication of her words hang in the air as she continued her brief giggle fit. It was just so adorable. It was also ironic because if Claire hadn’t regressed she could absolutely follow up on that statement in full.
”Oh I don’t know great heroine Claire, can you really stand up to a true blue hero? He’s all muscled and cool and strong… mmm~ you might want to train first~”
Serah blinked in surprise. Claire wanted…. To learn how to cook? But that was her thing! Cooking had always been her thing. But… she could not deny the fun they would have together. She always enjoyed what little time she could get with her sister. Besides if she was going to have to be on her own some she DID need to learn how to. She did not want Claire having to ask strangers to make food for her, to dangerous.
”Ok, I’ll teach you, but I’m going to keep the best secrets for myself, I am the cook of the family after all, can’t have you stealing my spot~”
Ruinaga to the face, that was Caius’ destiny. He really needed to stop trying to give his mortal enemy advice, whatever twisted joke it was that he was playing. On top of that he had apparently been around for a long time? Why was he even bothering with her now younger sister? It was not like Claire was a threat to him as he was now.
”It’s been close to a year now, Since I woke up here. For a while I was alone, I made a few friends, met an old one. Then I fought…”
She notably paused in her words recalling the harrowing fight she had with the possessed Lighting just a few months prior. Her face twisted in fear of the memory of that gruesome, horrible fight she and her friends were forced into. It was the only way to save her, she knew that. But it did not make it any less painful. The memory of struggling against her, having to strike her down and pray her will was strong enough to last. She could not help but wonder. Was this there fault? Had they harmed her body so much that… whatever this was had to take place for to go one?
Was it…. Her fault?
”Yeah… We’ll find the perfect place for you, promise”
Lucky for Serah the subject would soon be shifted to Lumina, it was kind of funny, Claire essentially standing here and complementing ‘herself’ as they ate the dinner she made. She almost wanted to pop the bubble just to see how she’d react!
”She is very successful, she even has her own airship! I am going on a trip with her soon or… that was the plan. Given recent events… well, we’ll just see how things go”
At the question of who Lumina’s partner was Serah gave a wide grin. The thought of Claire teasing Claire was far to sweet for her to resist, specially when Lumina would still understand why. Plus well, someone had to keep pushing that romantic relationship along or they’d be in the grave before they confessed fully!
”Oh no see, I just help Lumina. Her partner is her boyfriend, his names Zell, I can definitely take you to meet them both sometime!”
Yep yep, that was going to be SO fun to see later!
Despite everything, even if she were younger now her heart warmed to know that her sister was proud of how she had grown. It meant everything to her.
”You at least had good taste in armor though, if nothing else you were always a fierce sight before your foes… not really that cute, Besides I HEAR some people like the big strong type, as for your dresses… given what I’ve seen of this world.. there’s all kinds of material you could use to make your styles sis, we can buy them of course, but please don’t bankrupt my savings…”
The thought of what she had built up doing odd jobs and teaching just vanishing before her eyes practically made the girl weep inside.
”I can also, if you like hunt some monsters from time to time, have one of the local shops handle turning them into the materials you need, Just have to remember not to toast the furs in the process…”
It was so nice seeing her sister like this. Enjoying herself, enjoying life. It was something she had not seen even in recent times completely. Her eyes were fixed on having fun with her hobbies, with the things she loved. There was nothing she could have wanted more for her dear sister; it brought a brightness to her own features as well.
”It’s so nice being able to do things together…”
She let it slip out without thought and did not correct herself. She was to absorbed in the bliss of that moment, of enjoying her time with her sister. As they finished there meals Serah took the bowls up with a smile and went to clean them, a time that would conveniently give Claire the chance to throw a question at there friendly neighborhood moogle regarding that wording, or anything else she might have on her mind!

Thinking of you, wherever you are I've returned from memories past, reborn from times past
⚡
It felt strange but nostalgic to have her head pat, causing Claire to mellow a bit. She thought of their Mom briefly but kept it to herself, merely smiling instead. "Curative magic, please teach me, Serah~ If you know any other supportive spells, I'd like to learn those too!" the possibility of learning a spell to disarm, as well as arm treasure chests came to mind. Only making her more excited, which meant the denizens of Provo were about to face another storm.
When dubbed witch, Claire giggled before smirking; "Lightning Witch Claire today, Grand Mage Claire in the future~" Serah was right, magic was so grand, flashy, and exciting that her sister was invested in it. The trick wasn't so much the youthful hope that magic brought but that she was keenly aware that it was the best way to defend herself for now. Sure, Claire had seen what her future self matured into but... she didn't have that physique today. Nor, if she was being quite honest, did Claire event want such. Cool as her future self looked, she was lacking the second part of the equation; beauty.
Not that she blamed her future self, it was smart to cut back on excessive spending, so of course the clothes and the hair care were the first to go. Likely, she'd just put that money into make sure they had a roof over their head, food to eat and... Serah's university tuition. She'd make those sacrifices again too, given how her sister turned out. Fortunately, in Zephon, she didn't have to. Being here was truly freedom, with so much to do and see.
"Oh, did future me already test Snow? Honestly, the test I have in mind is pretty simple... I hope I didn't go overboard..." Claire sighed, she could imagine that, with enough time; if she felt a liiittle proud of Serah now, then what did her future self think? The one who got to see Serah become the woman she was now. She wagered that she'd be very protective and a bit meddlesome. This caused her to laugh nervously, a bead of sweat dripping down her temple.
"Well, I'm sure he's fine but it kind of sounds like you fell in love with a version of our Dad. A muscle head version I wager but the way you look when you talk about Snow, mmm... It reminds me of how Mom looked. In that way, I'm kind of jealous of you now too~ The guys aren't interested in me, I um... scare them off, supposedly..." she coughed to clear her throat, before looking away. It's not as if she'd ever shared much about her school life. Claire had largely kept that separate, in a compartment of her mind that was reserved for when she was away from her family.
Much to Claire's delight then, Serah agreed to teach her how to cook. Well, how to cook as well as she did. In Claire's mind, when it came to cooking, Serah was a genius and if she didn't want to teach, she'd have endorsed Serah opening a restaurant. Besides, she didn't need to know Serah's secrets, she could save that for Snow. "Really, I just want to be good enough to make a good impression. Being able to make your own chocolate and other baked goods..." Claire caught herself part way, covering her mouth as she blushed.
Sure, such charms were part of a woman's romance but this was her little, BIG sister. The conflict in her eyes was evident, the part where of course Claire was a normal teen girl, who couldn't talk about that stuff with her kid sister or Mother. Yet, her sister wasn't a kid and in fact had a fiancé. So then... she could have girl talk? Ah but that was too embarrassing right now!
"...Aha, well you know how much I love sweets...ahaha..." she doubted Serah was going to buy that excuse now, even though she really did like sweets.
Well, shifting subjects, Claire was surprised that Serah had been in this world for a year already. Her eyes widened as she became quite attentive. "Mmm, Mr. Caius thinks that, because I'm an Outlander, the University might make an exception. Therefore, I'm going to study really hard." Claire began, before her expression softened from her excited resolve briefly.
"...I didn't expect I'd get to go to a University at all. Having the chance now... I'm glad. I guess I was just pinning some of my dreams on you, even if I didn't tell you~"
Not that Claire dwelt on that revelation for long. Serah had dangled something interesting before her. "I can't wait to meet Lumina and Zell. Tell me, what's Zell like then? He's got to be a pretty reliable, if not strong guy, like Mr. Caius, right? After all, given what you've told me of Lumina, a successful woman needs a reliable partner. Someone kind, as well as brave; to remind you of the simple things and encourage you to persevere when things get tough." little did Claire realize she was becoming an accessory in Serah's schemes. So long as Claire confirmed certain aspects, it was practically like sealing Lumina's fate.
For now, Claire had her own problems. Namely the more she heard of her future self, the more she felt uneasy. "I guess I failed at being a cool beauty then. There might be guys who like such a person but... I haven't met them yet. That type likely appeals more to someone younger, honestly." Claire looked down for a moment but then shrugged. "I'll try not to bakrupt you then but I can't promise~ Cheer up though, Serah. You'll be back in the black once I sell a few. Especially if you're able to hunt down good monsters for material. Did I teach you that too? Mmm, Monsters have different weaknesses and resistances after all. Stylish and functional is a winner." she'd reassure Serah, even though she had a devious smile on her face. One that was trying oh so hard to be innocent and sweet instead.
"Hmm? Why wouldn't we do stuff together? So long as you're not off with your b-o-y-f-r-i-e-n-d, I don't see a problem?"

I'm not an army of one
Cleaning up had not taken to long, lucky for her stews were not the messiest of things. It was not long before she was able to return her full attention to her now little sister. Said little sister was eager to accept her offer of teaching her healing spells. Well, white magic skills in general really. She could not help the smile that came to her face in response. It was like Claire was one was her students back in New Bodhum! This time it as her turn to help Claire grow. Her turn to make sure she grew up proper! Given this was her… younger sister though… it was going to take all skills as a teacher, and all her knowledge of being a big sis like her sister was! Being a teacher again… that was a thought wracking her head. Hmmm… Maybe if she were going to be here a while, she could look into that. Teaching was her passion in life after all. Nothing quite gave her the same joy as helping young minds growing, helping them learn about the world. Of course, her greatest subject had been history, it was what she had the most skill in teaching. Maybe… if she took the time to learn about this world, she could do that here to.
She might as well make her life comfortable until her hero came right?
”Of course I will Claire, we’ll start with basic healing I think, other magic is more complicated and your still a novice right now, oh great magic prodigy~”
She giggled at the teasing she gave her teasing. She was more than happy to teach her but going to complicated with the spells would not do for several reasons. Even if Claire was such a natural she mastered everything with ease, magic still took energy, they would need to build up her natural reserves before she pulled off more complicated spells.
”Your really good at Thunder, but you can’t just cast it non stop yet right? You’ll get better with practice sis, and as you do you’ll be able to learn the more complex magic! You just have to keep to your study and practice like a good student ok?”
She had gone in teacher mode alright, she practically wanted to go on a full lesson about the fundamental uses of Cure, and supportive magics in general with Claire right now. But she refrained, there would be plenty of time for that later after all. They were together now and nothing would change that. She could help her sister grow, learn new things… she could make sure she was able to have the life she never could before. Boy free, and especially Caius free, though. It was not like there was an untaken man worthy of her sister ANYWAY, so there would not be any issue there. Of course, the girl of course failed to see the irony in this point of view on her part, it was just natural right?
Claire seemed to take very well to the nickname of witch, even stating she would become a ‘grand mage’ in the future! She could not help but giggle with delight at her sister’s antics. It had been so long…. Seeing Claire truly let go and be herself, beyond everything she had felt she needed to be. It was like a miracle. Well, she supposed it was in away. Claire could just live her life, and Serah could take care of her. Honestly… Other than her worry for her in general, Serah did not mind this. Claire deserved it after all she had been through.
Maybe… the Historia Crux was not messing with her? Maybe.. just maybe, it, or the other Yeul’s… had found a way to reward Claire for all she had done. A once in a lifetime chance to live the life she had never had. If that were the case well… she would support her sister with everything she had, she would ensure she got to experience everything life had to offer. She smiled brightly, nodding her head in agreement with her sister.
”And on to our Grand Master Mage Claire, oh weaver of our fates!”
It was fun to play with her sister like this, to encourage her use of magic. It was what she could help most with and if she were being honest magic had always been more fascinating to her than brute force anyway. Magic could do so many things that simply could not be done normally. Heal, freeze, shock… The magic of chaos allowed her to summon her monster friends to her side. Unfortunately, that was also a power she could not teach Claire, namely because she was not ‘taught’ to use it, it was a power gifted to her. One she… had no idea how to gift to anyone else. She could still use it to protect Claire though, even to help with her training or to simply have some fun!
She wondered how Claire would feel about riding a Chocobo….
As for Snow’s test? Well, she had not personally witnessed it of course, but Snow had told her. Of course, he did his best to water it down for her benefit, but it wasn’t that hard to put together.
”You…. Errr older you hated Snow at first. To be honest I never quite understand why, he is such a good man. You did always say he was a bad influence, But I never saw it. Him and the rest of NORA taught me lots of things! I suppose the test… was the journey they had together. You both came to understand, each other. That you just wanted the best for… me”
She giggled, she did have a touch of curiosity in her mind though.
”Oh my, and how would you test my dear fiancé oh great witch Claire?”
Wait… like dad? Hey wait no that sounded to weird! Why did Claire have to bring that up? Besides, it was not like she could compare it all that well…. She did not know him all that well.
”Well it’s not like I remember dad that… hey he’s not a muscle head, take that back!”
The older Farron sister gave a huff, hands on her hips as she countered. Snow was not a muscle head. Sure, he could be a bit… hot headed… and tended to rush into things without thinking. He beat up anyone who made fun of her…
But that was different! …right?
To the second part of what Claire Serah tapped her chin in thought. She then without missing a beat nodded her head in confirmation.
”Well yeah, your always scary, even when we were the age you are now…. I remember back when were kids, gods help anyone who picked on me, hehe, and all without messing up your hair sis! Can you really blame guys for being scared of you?”
Somehow, she doubted her sister would be any less protective of her now. Still… she at least didn’t have to worry about protecting her, and she could enjoy the life she had been gifted, the life she always deserved. Maybe…. If such a thing she could remain, maybe when Snow came…. They could live here to. Maybe.. just maybe NORA could come to. They could all be one big happy family again.
That was Serah’s selfish wish, was it wrong to want it?
…No, a wish shared could not be a selfish one. It was not selfish if everyone involved would want it. If nothing else… she knew it was not for her and Snow.
Serah caught the blush of her sister, she wanted to impress Caius badly here… though she could tell she simply wanted to know. It was so cute… precious really but also wonderful to see. This was something else she could share with her sister, so of course she would share all she needed to know, When she was done Claire would become a master of baked goods! Her chocolate chip cookies would be mouthwatering, her cakes would have the towns begging for more? The star like glow in Serah’s eyes said it all, she would not stop until it was so!
”Sister stick with me, I’ll make you a baked sweets goddess!”
Really liked sweets huh? Oh sure, Serah pretended like she was falling for it, nodding her head, though the grin that came with that nod practically screamed ‘your sister knows when you’re lying Claire’ Still despite that she let it stew, one of her many teacherly powers, put it on without actually saying anything. Course she already knew what was going on, but it was none the less fun to tease her sister this way. Gosh, was teasing going to be a major factor in their relationship now? It felt like she was dealing with a somehow more impowered Lumina,
Penning her dreams on her…. Well, she supposed that is all her sister would have been able to do. At least seeing her succeed Claire could see her dreams done in a sense, She could see it happen. Still despite that…
”I’m glad you can now Claire, in later years I felt guilty that you were never able to, you know… who knows Serah, maybe I’ll end up one of your teachers hmmm?”
In a movement that could only be described as ‘Lumina’ Serah placed a finger to her chin, the rest of her palm curled and a wide grin across her face as she leaned forward. She was not sure how Claire would react to her being a full-time teacher for her, but it was entertaining to see none the less. Though it would make things a lot easier to…
She was liking the thought more and more if she was being honest.
She wanted to say ‘Oh he’s way more reliable than Caius’ When Zell was brought up, but it would be a lie. Not because Zell wasn’t as loyal or as brave as they came, but because she couldn’t deny how dedicated Caius had been to Yeul, for every Yeul but two he had been the most reliable person in the world, She did not like Caius, she didn’t think she ever could.
But to call him disloyal would a horrendous lie on her part.
”Well I’ve only met him a few times in truth, but he’s definitely the reliable type, he reminds me of Snow in some aspects. Lumina has nothing to worry about with him at her side, that much I am certain of. A brave hero type you know? That is the kind of boyfriend he is for her! And you can just feel the love between them you know? It’s really romantic~”
There went that fate, all sealed up… poor Lumina.
”Well if it helps you definitely nailed down the cool part sis…”
It was of course in this moment that Mog flew by with his own cheeky remark.
”Cool and stuffy kupo!”
This time Serah did in fact grab a hold of Mog before he got away, and winding him up she had but one thing to say.
”Time for classic karma Mog, time for a Mog Toss!”
She let go, and the moogle went flying like on so many treasure hunts before, karma was such a cruel mistress. The thought of Claire ‘trying’ not to bankrupt her, along with the thought of just being a bit above board was practically enough to traumatize the pinkette on the spot. She could practically feel her savings flooding down the drain.
At least… Claire meant well… maybe…
”Well…. It’s complicated, you didn’t teach me to hunt monsters no, one of my other friends, his name is Noel taught me some while we were journeying together. You did teach me to defend myself though, you and Snow both. Oh and you gave me this…”
She pulled out a familiar switch blade knife, the one Claire had gifted to her. To this day she made su
re it was well maintained and, after using it to expunge that foul parasite form her sister got it thoroughly clean. ”It’s not as effective as Mog or my magic sure, but it’s like you… older you taught me, have to use every option at your disposal. Besides… a gift from you is precious…”
She trailed off for a moment at the memory. At one time…. It had been all she even had from her sister. It made it one of her most precious keepsakes, truly probably the most important.
”Careful sis, keep grinning like that an the townspeople might confuse you for an imp~”
Once more she reassumed that knowing ‘Lumina’ pose. Really, both her sisters really rubbed off on her, didn’t they?
Claire seemed to assume they would not spend time together solely because of her boyfriend, unfortunately that had not been the case, the memory of which made Serah downcast towards the ground. But she was not about to spill the beans. Despite the feel she gave off she nodded in agreement with her sister.
”It’s nothing sis, of course we spent lots of time tog…”
”No way kupo! No truly valiant moogle could let this slide kupo!”
Mog came flying back in, posing dramatically in the air between the two.
”Mog don’t you dare….
But the moogle simply gave a spin, then shook it’s head.
”No can do kupo, how are you two supposed to have a real start if all you do is make it seem like she was perfect kupo! She can’t not fall back into certain habits if she doesn’t know kupo!”
Serah shook her head desperately, denying was said with fire.
”Lighting was perfect Mog! How could you…. You didn’t even know her like I did!”
Despite Serah’s angry words however Mog simply continued without missing a beat.
”From what I’ve gathered you ended up becoming rather cold towards Serah kupo, you went so deep down the hole of protecting her, of her growing up just right… it was all you focused on, without actually focusing on her. You even joined the military with that goal in mind. Your relationship became so distant kupo…. Well, I agree with you on Snow though”
Serah flailed, trying to grab at Mog once more, but the moogle smartly floated just out of view. Ultimately the older Farron slumped, clearly, they were not memories she liked revisiting. Her words stopped then, at least until her sister responded to the actions that had just taken place.
