Genesis, Keimusho, Caius, and Emma have hardly finished introductions before there’s a shriek from down the hall. It echoes from the direction of the ballroom followed by a loud metallic crash. Following it leads to the kitchen just to the right of the ballroom. The doors are closed.
There’s another shriek. ”Help me! Help-!” The metallic clanging strikes like rain patter. Inside, the room is steamy and hot. A row of high top stoves segment the room in two, creating a kind of circular loop. Pots and pans are strewn about the floor, collecting condensation. On the other side of the room, a small woman ducks to the side, landing hard on the floor and scrabbling away, eyes wide. A monster comes lumbering after her.
It looks almost human through the steam. A solid-built human standing at eight feet tall. It charges after her, club-like arm raised to strike. Razor sharp claws extend from its fingertips. Its skin is hard and almost scaly. From its lopsided mouth protrudes a set of predator’s fangs. The woman raises her arms over her head, back pressed against a cabinet of cutlery and fine china.

A section of floor leads to the wine cellar, but its door has also been forced open. A ladder descends into utter darkness.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The chatter between all the individuals would be forced to a halt due to a sudden scream. It seemed as if the problems in this mansion were ongoing. Though hopefully that meant that there would be less investigating to do. Without a word the shinobi followed the screams. The sound leads to the kitchen and then another scream would bring them to the pantry. Opening the door revealed the source of the scream: a woman being attacked by some sort of monster. The being in question appeared to be humanoid, but it was hard to tell due to all the steam in the pantry. Regardless of what it was, it was dangerous. The being charged it's razor sharp claws prepared to strike the woman. Determined to prevent this the shinobi swiftly drew his blade and slashed the air sending the blue projectile Enpi towards the monster.
Genesis pursed his lips a bit as the man in blue scale armor dead-panned that he had seen him set the fire. Oh. Had they witnessed his altercation with the man with the streaked hair from three stories below? He had assumed that the distance would have been too great to make out details, but apparently they’d gleaned enough of what had happened.
“Well that’s troublesome,” he offered with a flip of his hair. He didn’t much care for the opinions of anyone here, but he didn’t particularly want to have to stab his way out of the mansion either. So-called “heroes” got so testy about that sort of thing.
The blonde woman in the suit who had also been in the ballroom chose to join them, and Genesis gave her another suspicious look as she leaned in to mutter something to her companion. Genesis was nearly positive that he’d never met her before, but something about her uniform mixed with her professional demeanor left a bad taste in his mouth. She had all the mannerisms of a Turk even if the odds of someone else from Shinra being in this mansion were low.
She explained that the butler wasn’t really up for chatter at the moment, and Genesis glanced over to Vossler to judge his reaction, raising an eyebrow when he realized that their numbers had dwindled. Only Genesis himself and the masked ninja were left over from their original group. Sometime while they had been talking, the armored knight and and the lithe woman with the short brown hair had vanished.
“What happened to Muscles and Shinra Reporter?” Genesis was forced to use the nicknames that he’d come up with for them since he had never bothered to learn their real names. The woman who resembled a Turk had a point though that they had a more pressing concern when she asked if anyone had bothered to put out the fire.
“...About that,” he offered delicately, but he didn’t have time to explain that no, Genesis had actually just closed the door and left the fire to rage upstairs. A scream pierced the air before he could say anything else, and the masked man sprang into action. Shrugging, Genesis chased after him, following the head of white hair through the wrecked ballroom and into the blinding hot steam of the kitchens.
The scream seemed to have come from a kitchen worker. She was currently backed up against a cabinet while a humanoid figure towered over her. The creature was mostly obscured by the steam, but it wasn’t hard to miss the thick claws extending from its hands in place of fingernails. Revulsion sprung up in Genesis, and he stood rooted to the spot for a moment as the ninja leapt into battle to save the woman. Genesis supposed that he should have joined, but he had seen a bit too much of human experimentation in the dark underbelly of Shinra’s secrets. It was hard to mistake the monster as originating from anything else with that shape.
“All that awaits you is a somber morrow, no matter where the winds may blow,” he quoted with a scowl before finally flicking out a hand and calling on the Barrier materia that glinted in his sword hilt. “Barrier.” The spell created a defensive wall around the kitchen worker to protect her from the creature’s claws as they descended towards her. And who said that Genesis couldn’t be downright charitable sometimes?

mma made no reaction and acted as if she didn't notice Genesis glaring at her, taking her own advice and not triggering a potentially explosive element. She was really wishing she had contact with Cissnei right now. They shouldn't have let others determine the groups and separate them. Standard operating procedure stated two should always go together for a reason. Emma couldn't trust anyone else here to have her back and Genesis could become more of a problem than the murderer if the wind blew the wrong way, as shown by the fire currently burning upstairs. The SOLDIER then asked a question about two people Emma was unfamiliar with. Who exactly was 'Shinra reporter'? Was it Cissnei or someone else entirely? Obtaining further intel on the matter was delayed as there was a sudden scream from down the hall. The silent man who looked like he was from Wutai took off in an instant, easily followed by Genesis. Emma ran after them too, the murderer might be striking again and it would be helpful to stop them in their tracks.
Arriving on the scene, the ninja leaped into action while Genesis froze a moment. Emma sidestepped around him and ran the edge of the room to circle around the creature while the ninja distracted it to create a pincer. She drew her pistol as Genesis regained himself and cast a protection on the worker. Emma made her way closer to act as guard as she took aim and fired. The Shinra issued handgun blasted like a small cannon. The equipped materia shimmered as the gun acted like an Elemental materia and added the orb's fire element to her shots.
The woman screams again, raising her hands in a futile attempt to stop the razor sharp claws descending upon her. There’s a flicker of magic, however, and they merely glance off the newly cast Barrier spell. The blow has hardly had time to land before the monster is thrust off balance by the force of Mu’s blade strike and then downed as a bullet tears its way into the creature’s chest. It gives a gargled, suffocating cry and hits the tiled floor heavily, blood pooling around it. Still, it writhes, unwilling or perhaps unable to die.
The woman stares at it in obvious shock. Then her gaze drifts to her three saviors.
Only three. Caius and Vossler have not followed. The blonde woman, too, they appear to have lost somewhere along the way.
”Th-thank you,” the woman says as she hurriedly gets to her feet, straightening her apron. The kitchen is a disheveled mess. Steam obscures the place like a sauna and she quickly hurries to the stove, turning off the heat. ”I was cleaning,” she says, ”When that thing…” She puts a hand over her mouth with a panicked noise.
She counts slowly. One, two, three…
”I’m Primrose,” she says, turning to them again. She has a mousy kind of face, her wiry hair pulled loosely back into a ponytail. Most of the hair has fallen out. ”I’ve been...Well. I’ve been…” She gives a short shake of her head. ”It came from there,” she says, pointing towards the pantry. ”I don’t know where it came from. Or what it is or-...”
She bites her tongue. ”I heard a commotion outside. Did something happen?”

[attr="class","skullbody"]Through their combined efforts they managed to stop whatever this beast was from attacking the woman. After somewhat gaining some composure she explained that it came for her from the pantry. The woman then asked about some sort of commotion. Mu raised an eyebrow. "I'd assume you are referring to something other than the commotion just caused in here. Pray tell us, what kinds of sounds were you hearing?" All the while the ninja kept his gaze set on the monster as it twists and contorts on the floor. "What in the hells is that thing. It it somehow connected to the murder?" the shinobi thought.

[attr=class, bulk] The creature’s blow glanced off the woman thanks to the Barrier spell that Genesis had cast, while the masked man and the blond woman worked together to bring down the monster. The bullet wound in its chest looked as if it should have been fatal. Blood pooled around it as the creature writhed, yet it refused to go still.
“For the love of the goddess,” Genesis muttered gripping the hilt of his rapier as he took a step forward. Why did he always end up with the dirty work? Bringing down the red blade with all of his strength, he did his best to sever the monster’s head even through the tough, scaly skin. “I might throw up,” he complained as he tried to shake off some of the blood that had splattered on his boots, but really, it was nothing he hadn’t done before. Not that he’d be thanking Shinra anytime soon.
The white-haired man engaged with the woman that they’d saved--Primrose apparently--and Genesis waved a hand airly at her thanks. “No one cares,” he said in response to her statement that she’d heard a commotion outside. He was a lot more interested in why actual nightmares were crawling out of the pantry, thanks. Poking his head gingerly inside of the shattered pantry door, he grimaced at the sight of food and various baking ingredients strewn across the floor. Still, the sight of a spilled bag of apples made Genesis brighten, and he stepped inside to retrieve one bruised red apple from the floorboards.
“Ripples form on the water’s surface, the wandering soul knows no rest,” he quoted to himself, tossing the apple up in the air and catching it before slipping the fruit into one of the pockets of his red leather coat. Afterward, he stuck his head out of the pantry and jerked a thumb back towards the ladder in the corner to signal the others.
“I’m guessing the creepy hidden basement will have some answers.”

The Dragonglaive
The cry had caught Caius' attention and he had moved without a word to the others. Mu, the faster shinobi, struck first. The monster went down , but didn't die. Only suffered. Caius had summoned his gunblade to finish it off and end this sideshow, but the pyromaniac acted first. He didn't care who did it, so long as it was done. He let the others hear her out as he began to look through the room. Caius had found himself incredibly one-track-minded considering who he was looking for here. The mercenary didn't find himself to be all that talkative unless it was necessary.
Red brought up the ladder in the corner, and Caius nodded his head as he started to make his way towards it. At the top though, he looked back at the woman. "Once you give what information you can, I'd suggest you get out of here. Best not to pretend there's no possibility there aren't more monsters of its kind here. For your own safety, I'd make a break for it and don't look back until you're safely back in town."
With that, Caius slid his way down the ladder. The moment he landed, he had already drawn his blade again and set it aflame with magic in order to light his way. It was a creepy basement in a creepy mansion filled with beasts that looked like the products of one's worst nightmares. An ambush was almost guaranteed.
Two stories above them, a great wooden beam collapses.
The weight of it is enough to shake the house. Primrose shoves her hand over her ears and screams. There are shouts from the ballroom -- the butler most likely -- as that first crash is followed by several others in a chain reaction. The smell of smoke breaks free from its second-story ballroom prison. The fire is no longer constrained and is clearly intent on taking out the structure of the manor’s roof.
There isn’t much time.
Between the noise, the commotion, and the beheaded monster at her feet, Primrose is near hysterics. ”What was that? Did something happen? Is...Is that a fire?” She has her head in her hands, shaking it sharply from side to side. ”But who could have-? Why?”
The house trembles again with a terrible groan. The missing persons, Faris and Celes, are still unaccounted for. There are two other search parties to your knowledge -- one sent to the east wing and the other to the west. There’s also the butler who was last seen in the ballroom, Primrose, and who knows how many other innocent denizens of the manor to rescue.
If you were to leave the kitchen, you could easily make it back to the entrance hall and the front door to safety. The doors are locked, but would need someone to break them down.
In the pantry, the hatch descends into the darkness which spawned the now-dead monster. The manor still has its secrets. Will you forsake them for the safety of yourself and others or will you follow the path, risking lives to the flames?
Caius descends in the darkness of what he discovers to be a wine cellar. The air here is heavy with the smell of dust and alcohol. The entire room is a disaster of wood splinters and broken glass. Spilled wine covers the floor in dirty puddles though many shelves are still fully stocked with well aged vintages.
On the other side of the room is a door. It doesn’t look right with the rather aged feel of the rest of the manor. While it’s made of a heavy wood, it’s secured on either side by some kind of strange metal mechanism. To the right side is a wall-mounted touch pad to input a numerical code. The monster must have wandered through here with the door closing automatically behind it.
While the door is well restrained on either side by the electronic lock, the wood itself could potentially be broken with enough force. On the other side of the door, you hear sounds of movement. Machines hum and whir. There’s the sound of clacking keys on a computer. A child is sobbing. Through the child’s tears, you think you hear the word ’Celes.’

[attr=class, bulk] Genesis was getting ready to follow the blond man in the blue scale armor down into the basement when a loud crack echoed down from a higher floor. The entire mansion shook, and Genesis was forced to steady himself with one hand against the wall as the smell of smoke drifted into the pantry. Well, it had only been a matter of time until the fire caught up to them. It looked like a change of plans was in order. The dead man’s secrets held little interest compared to his own life.
Genesis ducked back into the kitchen instead of following Caius. Primrose was having some kind of mid-life crisis, but he supposed that she’d either get over it fast or choke to death on smoke. He didn’t have much preference either way, though he couldn’t resist a slight comment when she asked who could have set the fire.
“Oh no. What a fiend that must have been,” he said with a roll of his eyes as he waved a hand at the ninja and the stoic woman. “I suggest you all make your way out of here too.” He could have trudged all the way back to the front door, but it had been proven that those doors were locked. Instead, he crossed over to one of the kitchen windows and proceeded to unlatch it and remove the window screen.
“Even if the morrow is barren of promises, nothing shall forestall my return,” he supplied as a farewell before ducking out the window into the pouring rain. His hair quickly plastered itself to his forehead, and he gave a forlorn sigh as he spread his one large black wing and took to the sky. He was going to return home looking like a drowned rat, and he supposed that Sephiroth would never let him hear the end of that one.
All in all, it hadn’t been the worst party that he’d ever attended.
