[attr="class","jrbody"]It warmed Jessie’s heart to see Caius react the way he did to her praise of the Dragonblade’s work in Torensten. She didn’t really know him, not truly, but it was still nice to make a kind stranger happy. She gave him a genuine smile in response to his thankful words. The fear and adrenaline from the brief fight with the monster was a forgotten memory at this point. All she felt now was contentment and camaraderie. [break][break] He was teasing about her plays and her hope to not disappoint on stage. Jessie wasn’t normally the type to blush so much, but she couldn’t control it today as her cheeks flared with color again. She was usually so confident but something about his demeanor threw her off just a little. It didn’t quite shake her, but it made her a little more aware of everything she did. Maybe it was because he seemed so genuine? [break][break] “We’re just taking a little break right now,” she answered his question about the next show enthusiastically. This is what she lived for and what she truly loved. “We’ll be doing a play called The Sea of Stars next week in Torensten. Every day near sunset in the Port District. It’s a star-crossed romance plot but with a twist. It’s more interesting than your average play, I promise. I really love it. Brinia wrote it, she’s our troupe leader. And she just knows how to craft a compelling story.” She grinned at Caius broadly, clearly loving the topic change. Jessie could talk forever about her work as an actress. And she legitimately very much wanted to see him in the crowd sometime. [break][break] But then the conversation shifted to her fleeting, hazy memories. He offered his help, which was really very sweet. But she tensed up at the thought nonetheless. “I-I don’t know,” Jessie starting in a halting voice. Her earlier enthusiasm and happiness melted away into trepidation. “I remember some of my childhood. From what I’ve heard of Sonora, the city I grew up in sounds very similar. The technology sounds much the same, at least. But other than that… I really just remember emotions, y’know?” Her eyes flickered away from his face and she stared off into the distance, unfocused. “Fear, guilt, anguish. They don’t really make sense in context but I know something happened that I don’t want to remember. So I guess I’m just afraid to pursue it. I don’t even know why I know how to fight. All I really remember is being an actress… but I have some magic. And obviously skill with a gun. And I really want to tinker with anything engineering that comes my way.” Her gaze flickered back to him and she stared at his open, kind face like he might have all the answers she sought. “I’m just not sure if I want to remember. I’m happy in Zephon and I don’t know if I want to ruin that.”[break][break] Jessie was thankful to return her attention to Vordun. He nuzzled against her still as she idly scratched his chin and cheeks. She really felt like she was interacting with a cat! She grinned hugely at the drake when he all but purred at her touch. “I was a little scared at first,” she admitted truthfully to Caius. “Who wouldn’t be? But I knew immediately that you were a friend so why wouldn’t he be too? Just because he’s a little toothy and scaly, it doesn’t mean he’s not a good, friendly boy.” She said the last few words to Vordun specifically, smiling hugely at both of them. “I know you should never judge by someone’s outward appearance too much.” That sentence rang especially true to her. As if maybe it was also true of her life before coming to Zephon? [break][break] “I would really love to learn more,” she said earnestly in relation to training prospects. “I do think I’m decently skilled with firearms. Usually, at least. I… also think I’d like to test my skills with explosives,” she added, almost sheepishly. “From what I remember of my past, I know I was somewhat skilled with grenades and bombs and the like. I think I could be a real asset. But I don't exactly know how much I remember or how good I’d be.” She smiled at Caius again. ”I definitely think there’s a lot we could learn from each other. One and off the training ground.” Her voice had dropped in pitch a little. Maybe it was a little huskier now. She might be flirting, just a little. But he put her at ease so much, he was so friendly and kind, she just couldn’t help it. [break][break] “I do think I’d like to join you on a job sometime.” She winked and added, “To show you that I’m not actually completely helpless. And that it really did just surprise me!” Jessie really hated being the quintessential damsel in distress. She was completely fine playing that role on the stage, but in real life she preferred to hold her own. [break][break]

"Oh really? That does sound interesting. I've always loved a good story" Caius admitted with a warm smile, interest piqued when Jessie threw the sales pitch on The Sea of Stars. Not much information to go on, but at the same time just enough to drive interest. She was definitely one to throw a hard bargain. Suppose he'd just have to go and see the play for himself after all. So next week was the date?
Next week, huh?
Caius knew that meant he couldn't exactly run off on some job until then, or he might not make it back in time. Even if he took something tomorrow, there were never any guarantees on just how long it could actually take, no matter how simple the job seemed. The realization of what this meant slowly dawned on him, and he could admit... This was a little out of his comfort zone. Caius did not tend to stick around for very long. And if "next week" was a few days away, maybe, but... This was more than a few days. But he'd said he would go. And Caius didn't break his word when he gave it.
"Guess you'll be seeing me there. Watch for me" he cheeked with a grin in turn. Guess he would just have to... Grin and bear it. Wakka wakka. It couldn't be too bad, right? Surely he could figure out ways to keep himself busy. He could help out with the recruits a little, maybe improve on his skills as a leader a bit. He could replenish supplies, maybe do more fishing closer to home to replenish their fish... These were perfectly practically beneficial things, so maybe he wouldn't go stir crazy. Only problem was that wherever Caius went, trouble had a way of following. And Torensten had seen enough lately. But hopefully it wouldn't be a problem.
He was being hopeful, at least. When the topic turned to her memories, it was clear he'd hit a bit of a nerve spot and he wasn't sure if he should pursue it further. He already missed her pep and cheer. "I'm actually the same way, when it comes to Sonora" he admitted. It was relatively filler information, but perhaps having someone who could understand just a little bit might set her at least even just a little. "The place I came from had fairly similar technology, by what little I had seen and heard of. Things went to... Well, things went wrong before I could experience them fully, but I definitely get nostalgic when I go to Sonora. Guess it's a little weird I call Torensten home, but... I don't mind it."
Was he rambling? Maybe a little. He didn't know how to set her at ease, as much as he wanted to. So what was funneling out was just word vomit of what was in his head at the time. Her admission of emotions and feelings she felt, without having context of them, gave him pause. Did he encourage her to pursue it, despite her fears? She could come out worse for wear. And yet...
"I think in your shoes, I'd want to know the truth, even if I'm scared" he admitted softly. "I think if I ran from it, it'd always bug me. But it's also possible that those memories and experiences hold things that might help you. If something happened, perhaps it will be a lesson or a motivator to prevent it from happening again". He scratched his chin a moment. "I didn't lose my memories when I came here, as far as I know. But I did come in with... Well, a lot's happened. Things that sometimes, I wish I could just forget. But they shaped me into being motivated the way I am, to do what I do now. But that's just me. I guess it depends on what those memories might be, in your case. Though it sounds like you're managing alright either way so far. If you decided that you'd rather just stick with what you know, I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world" he brought up, managing a smile. With or without her memories, she seemed plenty competent. That was a bigger compliment than it probably sounded like.
In the end, the choice was hers. Colour returned to their conversation as Vordun continued to do his best imitation of a cat. The drake's sudden decision to roll over in the sand caused Caius to nearly lose it. "If there were more people like you out there, I think the world would be a better place" Caius admitted softly, with a warm smile in turn. He really did appreciate her understanding when it came to Vordun. It had proven to be quite hard to come by.
Unfortunately, Jessie's flirting would fall on derp ears. He was not trained for this. The blonde didn't clue in that she was even doing so. "I agree. I have... Some experience in firearms. But I haven't used a dedicated firearm in years, so if there's a chance to possibly improve my technique with someone more recently practiced, I'm not going to say no. Especially if it's you" he brought up with a small laugh. She said she had some skill with bombs and grenades but wasn't too sure on the extent. "I have something of the kind stashed, and have used them here and there. But not often. Can't hurt to learn a thing or two if there's an opportunity" he admitted. Odds were she had better skills with explosives than he did, even with her memories on the fritz. "For the most part, my main skill is in swordplay. If there's anything I can help you with on that, I'd be more than happy to."
Jessie was open to joining him on a job, which he was quite happy to hear. "I certainly wouldn't object to your company" he cracked in turn. "I have no doubts you can handle yourself when you're prepared. Perhaps it might be a good chance for you to test out your capabilities with explosives, as well?
He then chuckled a bit as the thought ht him. "The play, training, the job, we'll be seeing a fair bit of each other, won't we?"
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Her smile was genuine and warm when Caius said he’d make her play next week. She knew he was a busy man so it thrilled her that he would take time out of his schedule to see her show. “I’ll keep an eye out for you,” she said earnestly. “And if you hang around after the end I’ll try to find you.” She certainly looked forward to seeing the mercenary again, especially when she wasn’t falling on her face running from a monster and making a fool of herself.[break][break] She was intrigued to hear that Caius felt much the same about Sonora as she did. She vaguely wondered if there was any chance they came from the same homeworld, but dismissed the thought before voicing it. She didn’t remember enough to even describe her home, much less compare it to another. She chewed her lip nervously as Caius went on, saying that it might be good to remember, to refind her lost years and understand what had happened. There was logic in his words, strength and courage too. The brave thing would be to pursue her past, to put the pieces together. She knew that. But Jessie hadn’t quite decided if she was brave enough yet, or if she wanted to take the coward’s route and just live her life in Torensten with only hazy shots of the past. [break][break] “Thanks,” she said softly. “I’ll definitely think about it, maybe try to find out more soon. I am happy, but you’re right. There’s probably value in the past.” The somber moment passed abruptly when the drake rolled over, causing a cloud of sand to attack her face. She spluttered and laughed, rubbing at her eyes and shaking sand out of her long hair. She fixed Vordun with a mock-serious glare and, in her best stern voice said, “Now look what you’ve done, you scaly beastie!” But she made sure the drake knew she was just joking when she pushed a retaliatory cloud of sand back. She grinned playfully at both the dragon and his master. [break][break] Caius either didn’t notice her flirting tone or wasn’t interested. Oh well. There was time for that, especially if they’d be seeing more of each other. And she didn’t really know him yet. Maybe there was a woman back in Torensten who already had his heart? Or a man? Jessie wasn’t judging either way. She just smiled gratefully when he said he’d happily practice with her with any type of weaponry. A thrill of excitement that she didn’t entirely understand shot through her at the thought of the explosives stash. Her fingers seemed to know more than her mind and they itched to take apart and study the bombs, to make something new and better. [break][break] “I can’t wait,” she responded earnestly when he said they’d be seeing a fair bit of each other. “I think relearning combat and actually working on something other than my acting is what’s been missing in my life.” She winked and gave him another cheeky grin, “And I suppose you’ll be good company for that.” [break][break] Jessie’s teasing was interrupted by the distant howl of some great beast and she tensed just a little. “This place really isn’t safe, is it? I can’t believe I was lied to.” Her fingers fidgeted with her belt where her trusty gun was strapped. “I guess I should probably get back to Torensten for now, eh? Unless you think the two - no, three -,” she added with a nod to Vordun, “Can handle all the monsters on our own.”

"You have my word" Caius responded with a gentle smile when she suggested he stick around after the show to see her. While he'd have to actually find out where in Torensten the show would be, and if there were tickets he'd need to make sure he got one before they sold out, he'd do everything he could to pull that off. He'd promised to be there after all. He did look forward to seeing her at work, and catching her after the show. She'd been enjoyable company thus far, he certainly wouldn't mind sharing said company again sometime.
After a bit of thought, Jessie seemed to decide she'd think on it for a little while and maybe give it a shot when she's ready. He smiled softly. "Whichever you think you'll potentially be happier with is all I can really suggest. It's a tough situation, but I'm sure sooner or later you'll make the right call for yourself. And I'm always happy to help if there's a way to" he offered, before laughing when the sand started to cloud around. Shielding his face, he peeked his head out enough to see Jessie's reaction, and while at first the alarm bells had started going off and he'd already started thinking about his apology and trying to make it up to her, she grinned soon after which showed she was just messing around. The drake had stared at her a moment when she called him a "beastie", but Vordun seemed to be able to sense her mood well enough to gauge she wasn't speaking out of malice. The stare indicated that Vordun was more intelligent than it might have originally seemed, if it recognized the word "beast" or any sort of variation.
Did Caius have a sweetheart back in Torensten? Someone that had captured his heart? If he did, he hadn't told anybody that would speak of it. Asking the recruits later would only yield that Caius seemed to be married to his job. Jessie suggested that getting to do something besides acting might do her some good. "Well, I'm glad to supply" he teased right back with a grin. She said he'd be good company for that, and he laughed a little. "You've been excellent company as it is, suppose I'm honored I can pay that back."
The howl didn't seem to phase Caius, who seemed fairly used to this by now. Jessie suggested that perhaps she should get back, unless he figured they could take all the monsters on their own. He shook his head.
"I clear some out sometimes, but I know my limits and I know Torensten's military is on it. Why don't I give you a ride back to town?" he offered. If monster activity was getting iffy, then their fishing plans were off anyway. "If you don't mind partaking in my company a bit longer, I mean. I can take you as far as the outskirts on dragonback before we have to land. I should probably check in with headquarters anyway."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie gave Caius a warm smile when he gave her more encouraging words about finding out more about her past and reclaiming her memories. She felt her cheeks flush ever so slightly at his sincere offer of help. She hadn’t expected a stranger to be so immediately kind and helpful especially when she herself didn’t fully understand what she wanted. “Thank you. That means a lot,” she said sincerely before Vordun’s antics interrupted them. The drake had an almost human-like look when she called him a beastie. As if he was put-out by her word choice. So did he understand human speech? She reached out and gently patted his scaly muzzle. “It’s fine. I forgive you.” She didn’t want Vordun to think she was actually upset with him. She had the feeling most people were too afraid of Vordun’s looks to really get to know him. He and Caius both were probably used to people reacting angrily or fearfully.[break][break] She started when he offered her a ride back to Torensten. She’d been expecting an escort at this point certainly, but a ride? She grinned like a little kid at an amusement park as she looked at Vordun and imagined soaring in the sky, amongst the clouds on dragonback. The thought was positively exhilarating. “I would love that!” she said to Caius, the excitement she felt clear in her voice. “I never imagine I’d have the opportunity to ride a dragon.” She ran her hand across his scales again. “And I suppose I can put up with your company a little longer,” she added with a wink and a gentle smirk. “Just know I’m really sticking around for Vordun,” her voice was kind and teasing. [break][break] She looked at the dragon thoughtfully, a hand on her hip. She had ridden horses, sure. But was this the same? She wasn’t exactly sure how to proceed and she didn’t want to offend Vordun. So she waited for Caius to tell her what to do.

Caius really did hope that whatever Jessie chose to do, she would be happy with the result. Sometimes people who didn't know things didn't know them because they were better off not knowing. Hopefully this would not be one of those times. He smiled warmly. "Keep me posted" he spoke softly, and that was the end of that topic for now, it seemed. Vordun didn't seem to understand the forgiveness thing, but judging by the drake's decision to nuzzle into her head, she was likely forgiven herself for calling him a beastie, which got another laugh out of Caius in turn. Vordun did seem to have some capability for understanding human speech and meanings, though not all of them. Still, he was certainly more intelligent than many would give credit for.
He couldn't recall the last time that someone genuinely was excited about the prospect of riding atop Vordun. Besides maybe Yuna, who was used to riding atop a dragon-like creature of her own from her own world, apparently. Caius' expression warmed up at Jessie's reaction. This was something he'd really only allowed Celes and Yuna to do, but Jessie had Vordun's favor, it couldn't hurt. Scoffing at her tease, he walked over and cleaned off Vordun's saddle after the sand rolling bit earlier, before tying it together properly once it was tidy. He typically loosened it when not in use, in order to provide Vordun more comfort and freedom of movement when they were on the ground. Once that was settled, he held out a hand to Jessie. If she took his hand, he would gently take her hand in his before bringing his arm up to assist her climbing aboard. Vordun bowed his head down to assist with this himself. If she refused the gesture, he wouldn't make a ruckus of it, instead taking position nearby to ensure her safety if she fell. Vordun was a big guy, even if he wasn't exactly as large as a full blown dragon.
Once Jessie was aboard, Caius quickly climbed up after her. Once he was up, he turned to face her and made a few motions to indicate he was going to strap her in if he had permission. If granted, he'd place her legs in the holds (Though a glance was given to her before doing so each time, quietly re-affirming her permission before proceeding) and ensure she was properly strapped onto the saddle. If her response was in the negative, he'd instruct instead. Having her do the work herself, he'd point out where everything needed to go.
Once Jessie was all settled in, Caius turned his body around and strapped himself to the front part of the saddle. "Alright, hang on tight" Caius instructed curtly before placing a hand on Vordun's neck, a motion that seemed to convey to the drake they were good to go. Letting out a short roar, Vordun got a running start as he flapped his wings, before taking off into the sky. Caius moved a hand downward which seemed to indicate to Vordun that they needed to start slow. Over time, Vordun would steadily speed up.
Hopefully Jessie would be acclimated before long, as Vordun soon enough let out a concerned grunt towards Caius. Sitting up in the saddle, Caius looked to Vordun before looking around. "Trouble?" he asked the drake, who let out another short growl in what appeared to be an affirmative. This came just before Caius heard the thumping of wings, and he pushed down. Vordun dove downwards in time to dodge a projectile heading straight for them.
"Blast" Caius growled low as he looked to the side as they came up. A group of one-eyed monsters with wings had made them their target. More from the Pale Coast, if he recalled. It seemed they weren't out of the woods just yet.
He leaned back against Jessie to ensure she could hear him despite the beating of wings. "You still up for some target practice, Jess?" he inquired. An affectionate nickname? She must have made an impression.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie let Caius help her aboard Vordun after fixing the dragon’s saddle. It was a little awkward getting settled on the great beast, but not wholly dissimilar to a horse. Caius jumped up behind her in a fluid motion and motioned for permission to help strap her in. Ah, yeah. She definitely granted him permission and tried to sit still as he placed her legs in the hold and made sure she wouldn’t fall off Vordun’s back once they were in the sky. She trusted him to make sure she was secure. The last thing she wanted was to feel insecure when they were soaring in the heavens. He was very polite, asking with a silent glance each time before touching her in any way. [break][break] She waited patiently as Caius easily strapped himself in as well. Vordun, she noted, was also calm and patient throughout the entire process. He didn’t seem at all phased by her added weight. When the mercenary was all ready he instructed her to hang on tight. Well, there was nowhere else to put her arms really, so she wrapped them around Caius’ waist, assuming that’s what she was meant to do. And maybe it was partially just because she wanted to. She was secretly happy he was facing away from her and couldn’t see her reddening cheeks as she pressed ever-so-slightly against him. To be fair, she didn’t know how turbulent a dragon ride was going to be.[break][break] Exhilaration whooshed through her as Caius motioned for Vordun to take off. She couldn’t believe she was about to fly! The dragon took a running start to drive up the momentum before unfurling his leathery wings and flapping strongly. She let out a whoop of joy as they gained height, rising into the air. The wind whipped through the hair and threatened to dislodge her headband. But the feeling was freeing and amazing. “I can’t believe you get to do this all the time!” she said to Caius, raising her voice so he could hear over the wind whipping past them. [break][break] She slowly loosened her hold on the man in front of her once Vordun’s movements became a little more fluid and slow. Jessie wasn’t afraid of falling out, it all seemed quite secure. But she didn’t let go entirely, she wasn’t that fearless. But it wasn’t long before she noticed tension between Vordun and Caius. The drake growled softly, clearly perturbed by something. Jessie barely had time to react before Vordun was plummeting towards the earth, dodging something hurtling through the air at them. She let out a startled shriek and clamped her legs tight around Vordun’s back so she wouldn’t slide off. Her fingers were curled in Caius’ shirt. [break][break] As the dragon straightened up, she was able to get a good look around. More of the one-eyed monsters were flying directly at them! She was already reaching for her gun when Caius leaned back against her and asked if she was up for some target practice. He called her Jess. It was definitely a nickname that had annoyed her in the past, but when he said it she really couldn’t fathom why. Instead, she just grinned and steadied herself with her legs. “Definitely.” [break][break] The group was small, she couldn’t tell exactly how many. She turned in the saddle and lined up a shot. Bang bang bang she shot three times in quick succession, aiming for the monster in the lead. Two shots punctured one leathery bat-like wing. The third hit right in its giant eye. The monster screamed horribly and began to plummet from the sky. With the second monster bearing down on them she readied her lightning materia. A thunderous bolt shot down from the sky, electrocuting the flapping creature. Its wings seized up, its eye wide and shocked. Then it plummeted to the ground.

Caius didn't mind. Sure she could have held onto the saddle, but if that was what she preferred to hold onto, that was her call. Whatever kept her from panicking and screaming and flailing when they got to flying. His long blonde locks blew back wildly in the wind, and a grin started to cross his face as he felt the wind hit his face. This feeling of freedom was the best, soaring through the skies, able to go wherever they pleased. It always felt so liberating, so full of life! Jessie let out a whoop of joy in turn and that got a loud laugh from him. She was enjoying herself, that was good. Would be a much more pleasant flight for it.
"I still don't believe it" he cracked in turn at her remarks, but the enjoyment would have to wait for a bit as the monsters closed in. At least she wasn't too afraid of mid-air combat. He watched with interest as Jessie pulled out her firearm and opened fire. She fired three shots, and all three were a hit. "Seems you weren't lying about your capabilities" he teased in turn as he loosened his straps a little to free up his movements in the saddle. He freed up both hands as well, as a duel-bladed short sword materialized in his hands. Yanking it apart, two daggers with a tiny barrel at the tips appeared, and Caius spun them between his fingers before taking aim. He wasn't as precise as Jessie, and the bullets weren't as powerful, being a fair bit smaller. But Caius was able to unload them in excess by pulling down the trigger. The first handful of shots missed, but once he got a lock on the first and second targets he had gone after, they were sent spiraling down soon after. Once he had his bead on them, he was able to keep his sights on them. The monsters weren't able to escape the round from the gun-daggers once he had them in his sights.
Jessie suddenly casted what looked like Thunder, and he smirked lightly in interest. "Well, that's a bit shocking" he playfully punned, before spying a monster coming from the rear. "THUNDARA!" he called, the lightning spells better able to lock on enemies from mid-air than the other two spells could. The third went down, and some around it had taken some additional damage.
"I'd hold on tight" Caius warned Jessie as his weapons disappeared. He wrapped his arms around Vordun's neck for leverage as Vordun would then divebomb downwards, tucking in his wings for speed and beginning to spin rapidly. The movements kept their foes from being able to keep their aim trained on Vordun. At the end of the spin, Vordun would suddenly flip through the air, now behind a group of the flying things as he unleashed a torrent of flames that engulfed them in turn.
"Is there anymore?" Caius breathed out to Jessie as loudly as he could over the beating of wings.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie was pleased when Caius commented on her abilities. She knew she was completely useless in a fight, but it sure felt good to show it and be recognized! She was a good shot when she was focused and confident. And she vowed she’d only get better from here. She watched in interest as Caius fiddled with some type of strange weaponry that morphed from sword to daggers with tiny gun barrels. She was fascinated by the contraptions, almost forgetting about the incoming monsters. She made a quick mental note to ask him about how they worked once they were safe. [break][break] The small guns were obviously less powerful but many more bullets flew from them. Caius was definitely a good shot and certainly lived up to his role as one of the Dragonblade mercenaries. The eye monsters fell from the sky, shot down and decimated before they even had a chance to get close. She watched their limp grey bodies fall heavily to the ground below, silently cheering for their demise. It felt good to rid the world of the monsters! [break][break] Jessie chuckled at Caius’ admittedly bad pun after she cast her lightning spell. The levity even in the face of danger quelled whatever fears she might still have. They made a great team, the monsters stood absolutely no chance. She was slightly surprised to see Caius copy her spell, sending another thunderous bolt of lightning towards the flying enemies. Did he have materia as well, or was there some other form of magic he employed? She knew from her time in Zephon that different worlds harnessed magic in varied ways. [break][break] When Caius told her to hold on she didn’t question him or hesitate. She figured Vordun was about to do some sort of tricky maneuver. He braced himself against the dragon’s neck and she held tight to the mercenary again. The wind whipped around her face and she closed her eyes tight as Vordun spiraled downwards. She swallowed a scream of fear at the sensation of falling through the air. She had to trust they knew what they were doing. But she kept her eyes closed tight and hid her face against Caius’ back until they leveled out again abruptly. [break][break] Jessie’s eyes flew back open as flames engulfed the air around them. Vordun unleashed a torrent of dragonfire that incinerated the remaining pursuing monsters. They screamed and cried out before dropping to the earth below. Grey shapes spiraled down and away from them. [break][break] “I-I don’t think so,” she responded when Caius asked if there were anymore. She was breathing heavily now and her heart was racing. But she dutifully scanned the horizon, looking all around them. “They’re all dead or escaped,” she reiterated, more confident now. There was no sight or sound of any more eye monsters. [break][break] She relaxed and sat back, heart rate and breathing slowly returning to normal. Then she chuckled a little, “I didn’t expect my first dragon ride to also be my first aerial fight. That was intense.” Now that Vordun was flying calm and steady again, she took the opportunity to holster her gun and try to fix her windswept mess of a hair. Where normally there would be her signature red headband, her fingers found only tangled hair. “Oh no! I guess my headband was a casualty of the fight.” She tried to play it off with a light laugh, as if it wasn’t a big deal. But she remembered it being important to her in her past life. It was a connection to people from before, even if she didn’t know exactly why. Now it was lost somewhere over the southern wilds of Zephon. Oh well. She sighed softly and ran her fingers through her long brown hair, trying to tame it just a little.

He trusted Jessie's judgement, and he nodded his head in turn as he took a deep breath, trying to catch himself after the spiraling of the dragon and the rush of the fight. This was perfectly normal for Caius, but he admittedly hadn't had too many battles on dragonback. Still, he'd been able to adjust quickly enough. And so it seemed, had Jessie. That was pretty impressive, he had to admit. She was able to adapt on the fly even when she hadn't really done this sort of thing before. He got to work on strapping himself back in when she spoke up. He couldn't hear anymore monsters, even as Vordun slowed down his speed a bit to give them a bit more hearing room and for himself to rest a bit. Luckily, they weren't too far from where Caius intended to land.
He chuckled a bit at her remark about how her first aerial flight was also her first aerial fight. "If you're intending to stick around with me, it might not be your last either" he joked in turn. "Truthfully, I don't get too many aerial battles. But we've at least had enough to know what we're doing."
But what she said next caused him to look back at her in surprise. She was right, the red headband she had been wearing before was gone! "Shoot, I'm sorry. Do you want us to circle back and look for it?" Caius inquired. While she had tried to play it off, that look on her face indicated that it was important. While trying to find something as small as a headband in the wide stretch they'd covered during the fight would be difficult, Vordun's senses might be able to help them along a bit. At the same time, night was coming soon. It wouldn't be long before it was getting dark.
