[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Shit! Jessie had been hoping for a relaxing jaunt down the coast. Maybe wading into the water a bit. Maybe just enjoying the peace and tranquility of the ocean at twilight. She was hoping for a relaxing time star-gazing or something. She had not counted on monsters. “Oh, the Pale Coast is safe. Everything’s moved on. It’s fine.” That’s what she’d been told. That’s what she came down here assuming. She’d just wanted a break from the city! Was that too much to ask? [break][break]
Apparently, yes. It was. Because there was a freaking flying eyeball chasing her now! On the beach! Why was it here? She vaguely tried to remember the real name for the creepy bat-like creature following her. Did it start with an A maybe? Ugh, why did it matter?! All that mattered was that it was chasing her! Thankfully, she hadn’t worn a swimming suit or something. But she wasn’t in anything super protective either. Just leggings and a loose shirt. Because she’d been laying on her sleeping bag in the sand, expecting to fall asleep watching the stars and not fight a flying eyeball. And yet, here she was. [break][break]
She ran and cursed, trying to pull her handgun out of her belt holster. She fumbled with the safety and finally managed to cock the weapon. Jessie glanced at her armlet. All her materia was still there, intact. She could fight this, right? She certainly couldn’t outrun it forever. So she turned around and faced the creature. It was still a little ways off, flapping on great leathery wings towards her. [break][break]
“Bolt!” she yelled, calling on the power of her materia. It was her only magic and it wasn’t the strongest, but it was something. A bolt of white lightning cut through the dark night followed by a crack of thunder as the magic worked. The creature was momentarily stunned and fell a little way before regaining its balance. She readied her gun to shoot the thing if it continued pursuing. She hated that her arm trembled, just a little, as she aimed.

With the proper mobilization of Torensten's proper military force, monsters in the Pale Coast had been cleared out far more constantly, making the coastline far more safer and opening up the possibility for the project that Caius had been hearing about as a possibility. A resort area placed right in the Pale Coast for adventurers to rest and relax between battles. Renting out services for a small fee for the day, plus the ability to stay the night or a few nights if you were more ambitious with your gil. That was what was going around the rumor mill on Caius' travels anyway. Should that come about, the peace and quiet that typically came with his Pale Coast visits wouldn't be so quiet. So Caius knew he needed to enjoy them while they lasted.
It was a shame though. He had enjoyed coming here with Vordun over the months. People weren't so keen on the presence of a drake (or any dragon-kind, really) and while Torensten was warm enough, they had been the subject of monster attacks before. Dragon attacks, even. So it wasn't really ideal to try and spend time with the drake between Torensten's walls. The Pale Coast, while dangerous at times, had been a haven for them to fish in isolation for some time. Uninterrupted, most of the time, besides a few monsters foolish enough to try and deal with a man and a dragon.
Those days were soon coming to an end. But that's just how it be sometimes. Best to make the most of it while you could. So here they were. A 6'4 man and a drake a bit bigger than your largest of horses. Just very casually making their way across the coast looking for a place to fish.
But what else is new? Monsters. Of course there's monsters.
And people too, apparently. Vordun motioned towards a woman running from an eyeball monster. Caius didn't recognize it so he didn't know the name, and the woman appeared capable of holding her own, but he wasn't all that keen on taking his chances.
Just as the woman aimed her firearm, Caius had suddenly warped and materialized in front of the creature, his sword appearing in a flash of blue light as he pointed it forward. A shotgun blast struck the creature in the eye -- which he suspected was its weak point -- before Caius did the sensible thing and tossed his sword forward like a javelin, piercing the creature. As it fell, his sword disappeared. Caius cracked his neck and stretched out a moment before turning to the young lady.
"I apologize for stealing your thunder. But I figured it was better not to take chances" he spoke curtly. "Are you injured?"
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie had her gun pointed at the eyeball monster. It didn’t seem very deterred by her lightning spell! Ugh. She hoped she wouldn’t miss. She hadn’t exactly been training with her firearm much recently. She was a successful actress in a busy city and rarely had need of a weapon so she’d grown lax. At least the stupid thing was big! It made a decent target. She was lining up the shot when suddenly she was distracted by something much larger and more intimidating than the monster in front of her. There. Was. A. Dragon. [break][break] Jessie didn’t know what to do. The dragon didn’t seem to be attacking or anything. It kind of just seemed to be watching her. Did it point at her? And was that a man riding it? The monster was coming closer while she was distracted and she turned back to see if nearly upon her. Jessie cursed whatever stupid decision had brought her to this stupid beach and raised her gun again, praying that the dragon didn’t decide she looked tasty suddenly. But she didn’t get a chance to shoot. In a blink, there was a man in front of her. A very tall, very handsome, very blonde man who seemed to materialize out of thin air. She didn’t know exactly what he did, but there was a blast and a thrown sword. Or so she thought? It seemed to disappear as the creature fell to the ground, dead. [break][break] She just stared at him, mouth slightly agape, for a long moment. What the hell? Not that she minded being rescued, but she hadn’t expected quite so flamboyant a show. And what was that dragon doing? The man was curt and businesslike, not seeming to notice that he’d done anything out of the ordinary. “Uh, I’m fine,” she glanced down at herself to make sure that was true. Yep. She appeared unharmed, only slightly dusty. “That was… Well. Thanks! It was just very sudden and unexpected.” She gave him a small smile. “Sorry, I was told this area was ’cleared of monsters’ but I guess they lied or were quite mistaken. I just wanted a relaxing break from Torensten, but I guess I won’t find that here! Not with these,” she nudged the gross corpse, “Flapping about.” [break][break] “Well, anyway!” She shook herself a bit, trying to regain her trademark confidence and swagger after that scary run-in. She held out a hand expectantly and grinned. “My name’s Jessie. Thanks again!” Then she looked past his shoulder. “Um. Is that your dragon?”

Caius would be surprised if someone said it seemed like a show. To him, he was just doing what seemed practical to him. The warping was due to the possible urgency of the situation. If the woman had been running, that meant that at some point she felt the need to gain distance and if she was now at a closer range, that likely meant it was possible she was at a disadvantage. A ranged shot and then a stabbing shot at the likely weak point ensured a quick and precise end to the fight with little room for collateral damage.
Of course, a side effect to his abilities was that it always came with a free light show.
She was fine, that was good. She said it was sudden and unexpected, which he supposed he could understand. Though something about her seemed... Unnerved? By her body language and the way her gaze continued darting towards the drake, Caius quickly got the impression that Vordun's presence was... Predictably unsettling as well. For a moment he considered how to set her at ease, but remembering the last time he attempted to intervene, he decided against doing anything directly.
It didn't stop her from complaining about the conditions here, though. He nodded his head. "Very mistaken. Extermination efforts just started" he clarified. "We can handle ourselves, so we were hoping to fish here before they exterminate the monsters and build that resort thing."
She held out her hand, introducing herself as Jessie. Caius leaned down and gently took her hand, though it was firmer when he actually grasped it properly. And yet, still with signs he was actively making an effort to restrain. Not knowing her capabilities, it was for the best. "Caius" he introduced himself curtly. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Jessie" he greeted then. Her next question came, he supposed inevitably, in regards to "the dragon" that had bumbled his way over now that Caius had dispatched the monster. He cocked his head to motion to him as he spoke.
"That's Vordun. We travel together, yeah" Caius explained. For one reason or another, he felt like elaborating on her question though. "According to books I've read, he's actually a Fire Drake. Dragons are typically bigger" Caius brought up casually in passing, a phrase which caused Vordun's head to snap towards Caius with a low groaning sound that by human standards might actually even sound like he was complaining. That out of everything actually got a laugh out of the mercenary. "Hey, I'm just following the book here" he commented. Vordun let out a few other growly groany sounds before giving a huffy blow of smoke to the side. Caius considered Vordun a dragon, or dragon-kind all the same, but Vordun's reaction was too good to pass up. He reached over to scratch behind Vordun's ears, and very quickly all was forgiven.
For a moment, his business-like demeanor vanished into something more... Human. Vordun did have that effect on him.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]The man seemed to think absolutely nothing of his little sword and light display. Maybe this was just an average Tuesday for him. He certainly looked capable enough. Apparently unlike her, who’d needed saving like some damsel in distress. Jessie wryly thought she was becoming a bit too much like some of her theatre characters, like the lovely princesses and highborn ladies who needed knights to rescue them. She wondered again what her life had been like before arriving in Torensten with no memories armed with a simple handgun and some magic orbs she somehow knew how to use. [break][break] The blonde-haired man agreed that she was mistaken about the Pale Coast being free of monsters. Jessie made a mental note to have a word with the woman in her troupe who had claimed the Pale coast was a perfect place for a getaway. She was either ignorant or setting Jessie up. She wasn’t entirely sure which. As she stuck her hand out, the man took it gently and shook it. She could tell there was a lot of muscle and strength in his grip. But he seemed to be holding back. Jessie supposed she shouldn’t be offended, she had clearly made herself seem like a weakling. He probably thought he might break her if he shook too hard. [break][break] He introduced himself as Caius and she grinned and nodded. It was a good name, she decided. It seemed to fit him. The dragon was introduced next. It’s name - his? - was Vordun. Caius corrected her, explaining that he was actually a drake. Real dragons were larger. Jessie was quite sure she didn’t want to ever meet a real dragon if this creature was considered small. But she giggled at the sound Vordun made. It sounded positively human, as if he was grumbling about being called smaller. The man conversed with the drake to Jessie’s amusement. It was just like any pet with the bond the two shared! But clearly more intelligent if he understood some of Caius’ words. [break][break] Jessie smiled warmly as Caius scratched the great scaly beast behind an ear. Vordun seemed to enjoy the action and Caius seemed to become a bit less serious that he’d first appeared. “Are you a knight?” Jessie asked. “From Torensten?” She thought there were still knights in the city. Torensten wasn’t a true monarchy anymore, but some things remained the same. And despite living there for nearly a year, Jessie realized she hadn’t paid as much attention to politics and history as she probably should have.[break][break] She turned her attention from Caius back to the drake. “Have you had him since he was an egg?” she inquired curiously. “You two seem very close.” She took a cautious step towards Vordun and held out a hand. She didn’t touch him, not without permission. But she bridged the gap between them, in case the drake and its master would accept her. She had never pet a dragon-type creature before. And though she was slightly scared, Vordun seemed nice enough. [break][break]

The Pale Coast would be mostly monster free eventually, if they were hoping to build this resort thing they were talking about. Personally, Cassius preferred peace and quiet, but he wouldn't complain about a place for people to relax being free of monsters either. They did have the lake in the forest to fish at, after all. He just liked for Vordun to get a little exercise before they went fishing. Kept him from getting fat and lazy and all of that, and kept him from getting bored and irritable to boot. As far as handshakes went though... He just didn't know. And his hands were huge. And past experiences had made sure Caius paid a lot more attention to possibilities and er more on the side of caution instead of wildly charging into everything, including social situations. Social graces were not his forte... But he was trying.
The interactions between man and drake seemed to be amusing to Jessie, which set Caius at ease if he was being honest. He didn't feel like being kicked in between while someone ran off screaming "HELP! A DRAGON! HE HAS A DRAGON!" again and forcing him to evacuate the premises before he got in trouble. Much less of that going forward, please. Even if she had clearly been wary and perhaps even a bit frightened before, she had resourcefully picked up quickly that he was friendly and wasn't stubbornly judging only on looks alone. That he liked, and respected. So he liked her already, just a little.
"I'm based out of Torensten, but not a Knight" he answered. "I'm part of the Dragonblades Mercenary Guild. They do combat jobs, while remaining on standby to act as peacekeepers of a sense when things go wrong. Which do. A lot. Especially in Torensten."
Caius knew bits and pieces about Torensten politics, but only because it was the only place he'd really spent an extended bit of time in. He was a travelling bird, he liked to get around. "And what does the fair lady do for a living? -- If I may have the honor of asking. You look like you'd be a knockout soldier, would I happen to be speaking to Commander Jessie?" he remarked with a small smile, a small tease. At the least, she seemed like she could handle herself to an extent. It was very possible that she was military. But there was a roughness to her gear that indicated that probably wasn't the case. May even be a mercenary herself.
She asked about Vordun, and slowly held out a hand, though she was clearly still nervous. Caius considered his options here, but after a moment just cocked his head towards Vordun to indicate she could pet him, and that it was safe. "I have" he admitted as Vordun sniffed at her hand, before leaning his head into her embrace, nuzzling his scales against her hand like he was some sort of cat. "Found him in the nest of an actual dragon. Probably took it by mistake, considering the size difference. Decided to take responsibility when I realized the dragon I'd just fought had been guarding an egg. He's scarcely left my side since."
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Caius seemed to relax just as Jessie did. Once they realized neither of them were going to do anything drastic or stupid, the chance meeting became quite a bit more enjoyable. He told her that he was from Torensten, but not a knight. “Oh, I’ve heard of the Dragonblades!” she commented excitedly when he said he was a member of the Mercenary Guild. How could she not? She’d lived in Torensten for the better part of a year. She’d never had a need to call on the mercenaries, but she knew all about their missions in Torensten and the surrounding areas of Zephon. “Things really do go wrong in Torensten a lot,” Jessie agreed, recalling the various tragedies and explosions that wracked the city. “You must have your hands full.” [break][break] She smiled and flushed pink when he asked after her, what she did for a living. Caius asked if she was Commander Jessie and she had to giggle, just a little. She bowed low and theatrically. “Some days I’m a Queen, others I’m a wartorn general, sometimes just a lady in love.” She grinned before clarifying. “I’m a member of Brinia’s Acting Troupe. We play all over Torensten, you might have heard of us?” Maybe he’d even been to one of their shows. “I don’t know what I did before coming to Zephon,” she admitted next and gestured to her gear. “But I can usually handle myself pretty well, though. That thing just surprised me.” She nudged the corpse. [break][break] The mercenary gave her permission to pet the drake after only a moment’s hesitation. That was a new experience, something she’d never anticipated. She giggled appreciatively at the feel of his rough scales on her hand. It reminded her intensely of a cat rubbing up against her in search of pets. Caius was explaining how he’d come to have Vordun, a chance finding of an egg. “He’s amazing,” she commented, looking into the drake’s large, shimmering eyes. “I never realized how friendly they could be.” She scratched him on the softer scales below his jaw. If Vordun was already acting like a cat, maybe he’d like this too. [break][break] “Sorry for forcing you both to come save me. I’m really not so helpless usually.” She glanced down at her gun on her hip. “I think this has proved I need to practice more. I’ve become complacent and lazy living as an actress in Torensten, I guess,” she said with a sheepish smile.

She had heard of the Dragonblades! Well, that did make things a bit easier in introductions and explanations and the like. Caius could talk about the Dragonblades forever, but he was sure she wouldn’t want him to take up all day just telling her what they were and what they did. He truly was passionate about their work, but even he knew that he could get just a little bit carried away. He didn’t want to come off as rude, or like he was willingly wasting her time. Lady like her probably had places to go, things to do, people to see. She just seemed the type.
Still, he couldn’t help but feel a little bit of pride knowing that the Dragonblades were known even to strangers in the area. Finally! They were getting somewhere! Their dream was starting to become a reality, as the more their reputation got around, the more likely they’d be to get more work, more chances to help people. More gil to prepare them to help people more. More helping people! And more security for the people knowing that the Dragonblades were around and happy to help where they could, no matter where the King’s men were or whatever they were doing. Knowing they were doing their part even in some small way just made Caius glow with happiness and pride. And pride wasn’t something he felt often. But knowing their little baby organization had sprouted…
But they really did have their hands full. And that got a laugh out of him. “We really do” he admitted shamelessly. “We really do.”
Jessie clarified that she was an actor, playing in a trope. Caius knew what plays were, though he hadn’t ever gotten a chance to see one. He’d seen movies back home, older ones on a little TV screen, but… While he had heard of plays, he’d never actually seen one in the flesh. Suddenly her explanation got a lot more interesting. Not that she wasn’t an interesting one in the first place, of course, but a new experience was always going to catch his attention. “I haven’t heard of the trope unfortunately, nor have I ever actually seen a play” he admitted. But then he smiled warmly. “Perhaps I’ll go and see one next your trope is in town? Seeing a play for the first time is enough reason, but getting to see you on stage is worth the trip all on its own” he teased just a little, a bit of a cheeky tint to his voice. Caius wasn’t often caught teasing and being cheeky. Especially with someone new. But sometimes there were exceptions, it seemed. It was good news, overall.
She didn’t know what she did before coming to Zephon. Interesting. “Memory issues. They seem to crop up here and there when people pop up here from other worlds” he brought up. “Could just take time, or need a trigger. But I’m sure a smart young lady like you will figure it out eventually” Caius tried to reassure her in turn. Stressing that she wasn’t alone and it was likely curable was the right thing to do, he figured. It would hopefully ease her stress going forward. She also stressed she could handle monsters, she’d just been surprised. He didn’t have an answer to that. Perhaps he would find out the truth to that sooner or later?
Vordun seemed to have taken a shining to her, and when she called Vordun amazing, Caius’ expression seemed to light up. After all the terrible ways people had treated Vordun, it was incredible to hear someone say that. “He really is” he spoke softly as Vordun responded to her scratching at his jaw by kicking his leg out repeatedly. That got a laugh out of Caius. He was definitely like some kind of cat.
Jessie apologized for needing the help, but he shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. It’s what we do. And it’s like you said, it just caught you by surprise” he spoke up, reminding her of what she said earlier with a playful little smile. “You’re always free to come by the training yard and spar to brush up, if you want.”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie could tell by his expression that Caius was thrilled that she’d heard of the Dragonblades. He seemed to glow with pride and she smiled warmly. She certainly would make sure to see them if she ever had a job that needed doing. It seemed like he truly took pleasure in his work. Jessie grinned as he laughed and agreed that they had their hands full. “Well, I’m sure Torensten would be in far worse shape without you,” she said and wondered how many other tragic events the mercenary group had mitigated or stopped entirely. [break][break] She was a little surprised to hear he’d never been to a play at all. But then, he did seem a bit all-business. She smiled and felt her cheeks flare red at his next comments, about seeing her on stage. “I look forward to seeing you there,” she said earnestly. “And I hope I won’t disappoint if you do.” She liked this little bit of casual, gentle banter. It was nice, especially after seeing her life flash before her eyes. [break][break] “Yeah. Honestly, I kind of keep avoiding the issue,” she admitted in response to her memory problems. “I haven’t really pursued it. I guess I’m afraid.” She shrugged. “I’m sure something will happen whether I want it to or not.” [break][break] Jessie glanced over to Caius as she scratched Vordun’s jaw. His expression was light and gentle and she grinned, both at him and the drake. Then she laughed aloud as Vordun began to kick his leg out. He clearly really liked the pets. She felt instantly guilty for her initial fear of him. He was just a big, scaly cat! “You’re a good boy, aren’t you?” she asked as if he were a cat or dog, looking into the drake’s large eyes. “Sorry I was scared of you at first.” [break][break] His reminder of her words, of the eyeball monster catching her by surprise brought an amused smirk to Jessie’s face. She couldn’t tell from his teasing tone if he believed her or not. To be fair, she hadn’t given him much of a reason to believe her. “I’d like that,” Jessie said in response to his invitation to come by the training yard. “I use swords in my plays a lot so I understand the basic choreography of swordplay, but I’ve never truly learned. I think I’d like to. It would be nice to have something more than my gun sometimes.” Then she favored him with another warm smile. “And I’d like to see you and Vordun again.”

Well, she had gone and made his day. That was awfully nice of her, intentional or not. Caius was passionate about his work, and then some. This was his purpose, his reason for getting up in the morning and travelling across Zephon most days. He had a goal and he would do whatever it took to attain it. Getting the Dragonblades up there and out and about and able to help more people than they had been able to the day before was a priority for him, and if he could accomplish that goal day by day, he would be a happy man. "Torensten has always attracted many adventurers, I'm sure someone could have managed it" Caius responded with a small laugh when she brought up just how important their work was. "But it makes me happy that we've done our part."
Perhaps he was understating it a little. The Dragonblades had recently made headlines in the Monthly Mog for stopping a human trafficking ring and for Caius' own exploits in Torensten via saving the residential district when a giant monster got loose during the Festival of the Hunt. But Caius had always worked as part of a greater whole, in his eyes. It was that way with the Kingsglaive, and with the Dragonblades, their exploits were part of a greater whole in keeping Zephon safe.
"Disappoint? You? Somehow I doubt that" he teased with a cheeky smile when Jessie brought up that she hoped she wouldn't disappoint. "I'm sure you'll do great, and I do look forward to it. Do you know when the next show is going to be in town? I'll make sure I'm in town for it" he then asked, completely serious about that. If this show was important to her, then Caius was happy to see if he could make sure he wasn't heading out of town just yet until he'd seen it. Part of it was also just because it sounded like Jessie would be happy to see him there, genuinely. Sure, it was probably partly just a sales pitch and he was potentially just being naive, he knew of the possibility, but he could have a moment or two to be optimistic just a little, right? If it'd make her happy, it was more than worth the trip. It would be a good experience for him too, he was sure. He was still lacking when it came to common social culture, he was fully aware of this. Experiencing what cultural varieties Torensten had to offer would help in the long run, hopefully. He couldn't let Celes do the legwork on the actual leadership aspect of the Dragonblades alone. He knew he needed to be fit to work with people and be someone the mercenaries could follow. Celes had that in spades, he wasn't confident that he did. She made it seem so easy, she was so educated and cultured, and he was... Well... Not. At least not in his eyes.
Unsure at first if he should press the issue regarding her memories, he eventually figured he might as well try and help a little if he potentially could. "I'm always happy to help if possible. If you're comfortable with saying, do you remember very much? Anything you could possibly work with?" he inquired, at least communicating he was open to help if she wanted it. Memory issues sounded like a terrifying thing. He could understand why she was afraid. The least he could do was assure her that she wouldn't be alone when she did decide to pursue it.
The laughter continued as Vordun flat out acted like a domestic animal, and Jessie's treating him as such in turn. Vordun continued to nuzzle against her hand and "purr", which Caius had not seen him do just yet. "He's a big teddy bear. But not everyone we come across is able to realize that even when he shows he's friendly" he remarked with a shrug. "Can't take him into the capital cities with me anymore, now that he's bigger. It's always a joy in the rare times people look past the scales and the sharp teeth."
Jessie brought up that she knew a bit about swordplay from her plays, but could stand to learn a bit more. He smiled. "I'd be happy to see you whenever you want to come around. I might not always be in, I don't stay in one place too long, but if I'm there I'd be happy to work with you and help you out. And who knows? Maybe you can show me a thing or two about using firearms" he offered. Caius had years of experience with firearms, but he was more experienced with swords. If Jessie used firearms primarily, there was always the possibility he could learn something from her style. "I'm always open to company when I go out on a job too, if you're ever interested. Fair warning on that one though, trouble tends to follow me around."
Now that was an even bigger understatement. At the least, that remark was possibly a slight hint that he had been enjoying her company thus far.
