The information Caius gave her took her several moments to process. He said that people had been displaced from their world to this one. Was she on a whole other world? She shook her head, trying to recall what had happened. She couldn't remember how she'd arrived in the swamp, nor what she had been doing just before. She could remember it being her eighteenth birthday, being reunited with Zidane, feeling so happy, but then things became blurry. There was no moment of being transported. No moment of her world changing. She remembered the journey to Terra much more clearly. It had been exciting, exhilarating even, for a moment she had felt like she was flying, and then she was there, in Terra. She had no such memories here. No such plan to change worlds. And this was most certainly not Terra, not that it could be. That world had been destroyed...
Garnet looked curiously over to Caius, unsure what to say for a moment. "You... say that this is another world from our own?" She had questions. How did he know she came from another world too? Did he just recognise her circumstances? "No... You said, our own worlds... In the plural sense. You are not from Gaia?" she inquired. That would make sense. He didn't know who she was. It wasn't vanity that she wasn't recognised, she knew he might not know her by sight, heck, it was a fact she had depended upon on her travels, but after all that had happened, she wasn't sure there was anywhere left on Gaia where the name Garnet Til Alexandros was not known, for better or for worse.
"I know that it may be difficult to believe, but this is not my first time travelling to another world. But... in the last instance, it was intentional, and I understand both how I came to be there and how I returned." Well, she mostly understood. She wasn't sure there was anybody on Gaia who fully understood how the Invincible had worked. But here she had no such plan, no purpose, and no idea where her friends were. Was she here alone? Or had Zidane and the others come through somewhere else?
(...Torensten?)
He mentioned a place. Hopefully it was a town. If it was nearby, it would be the logical place for everybody to gather. She nodded. "Thank you," she said, for his offer of escort. "Don't worry about the qualities of the accommodations. I may be a Queen, but I promise you, I'm more experienced in travel than my current attire might suggest," she smiled politely. "You probably notice that I don't even talk like a Queen. I spent a lot of time on the road and undercover," she said, all the while while sounding an awful lot like a Queen, but, well, it was Garnet. She had never quite mastered the common tongue as much as she liked to think. At least not in accent.
"Please, lead the way, and tell me about this Torensten. If you're familiar with it, I assume that you have been here for a while..." For a moment, she was reminded of those early days travelling with Zidane, when he had seemed to know everywhere and she had no idea. She felt like the naïve princess stepping outside her castle for the first time, and not the experienced traveller she had become.

"I am not" he answered when she asked if he was not from Gaia, frowning as he realized she may very well be taking this harder than he was anticipating. He supposed that not everyone was going to take this in stride. He knew that he didn't. He took a breath, preparing for the worst. But then she began to talk about how this wasn't her first trek to other worlds. Where had he heard this one before? "I've never travelled between worlds until now, but considering the things I've seen in my lifetime at this point, I have no reason to doubt your story."
She said she was travel experienced, and didn't talk like a Queen. He blinked a few times. He hadn't noticed anything at all about her speech. Because... "I apologize, but I wouldn't know the first thing about what a Queen is supposed to sound like. I don't think I'm the best person to ask" he admitted sheepishly. What would a Queen even sound like? Perhaps like Lunafreya, the Oracle? King Noctis sure wasn't an example, considering he talked as plainly as anybody else. Even Caius spoke more formally than he, being ex-military.
Well, at least she could take care of herself, and wouldn't mind the accommodations. Hopefully. Either way, he nodded his head as he began to get moving, hoping that the massive dress wouldn't slow her down too much. If it did... They'd need a plan. Luckily he did have something in mind if need be.
"Torensten is the capital of the Torensten Dukedom, governed by King Hremit and the Council. Their technology may seem... Primitive, compared to the standards of some that I have met, but much of what they have is powered with magic" he explained as they walked. "They have a strong following of heroic figures, and encourage mercenaries and adventurers to make their name here. Leads to quite the economy for them. And more protection than an entire army of soldiers could provide."

"Oh, I think a little doubt would be reasonable," Garnet smiled slightly. "I am the one it happened to, and there are some days that I still doubt that it could have possibly been real." Fleeing Alexandria, heading to Lindblum, fighting a war, stopping a war, discovering Terra, everything she had been through, it seemed unbelievable. But the events were nothing compared to the people. Every time she had a doubt about what had happened to her, she saw Zidane's face, and she knew that it was all real. He was her anchor. If only she could find him again...
So, he had never met a Queen? She supposed that was reasonable, although also it seemed he had no preconceptions. She laughed and shook her head a little when he said he didn't know how a Queen should sound. "Well, I suppose, not like me," she smiled lightly. "I spent... some time travelling the world. I had to... I believe the phrase is, 'go incognito', and I learned much. Including how not to sound and behave like a princess, as I was at the time," she explained. It was a skill that would come back to her with time, she was sure. She was still very much in 'queen' mode, but if she was stranded in this world, then it was a new adventure, and she could use returning to her Dagger personae. "To that end, call me Dagger. I suspect walking around claiming I am a Queen when I am not on my world will only cause trouble," she suggested. It seemed reasonable to her.
In fact, it seemed more than reasonable. If she was entirely honest with herself, it sounded a little fun. She knew she had to get back, and quickly, she couldn't abandon her kingdom, and she had to find Zidane immediately, but once she had, maybe a little adventure was just what she needed? "Interesting. Thank you, Caius, for the information," she said, her formal self again as she nodded her thanks in a curt bow. "I can only hope if I am here, my companions are too, and that sounds the best place to begin looking for them," she agreed. And then she looked down at her sodden gown, her heels sinking in the mud beneath it, and frowned. "And yes, a change of clothes sounds helpful," she added.

"I've literally seen a god rampage through a city, I think I can stand to believe you" Caius brought up with a small laugh when Garnet admitted that even she wasn't sure what to think of her story. It was definitely far fetched by typical standards, but Caius had learned that typical far fetched just didn't cut it anymore. And she wasn't asking to be treated like a Queen, so it wasn't like she was trying to get special treatment out of it anyway. She talked about having to go incognito, which he supposed made sense if she was a political figurehead. He knew all about assassinations. Perhaps a little too much about assassinations.
Though he couldn't help but give a surprised laugh at her suggested substitute name. "Dagger?" he echoed, as if trying to process the thought process that might have gone behind such a name. Or just trying to process the fact she did it. "Like, the little tiny blade?" he asked. He wasn't judging. Much. He was just curious as to what could have led her to pick that name. "I suppose it's not the strangest made-up name I've heard. Someone wanted me to call them Umbrella once."
That last bit was dry humor, but someone had actually tried to get him to call them Umbrella. Wouldn't Ella have sufficed? The world might never know. Either way, she wasn't too against getting out of those clothes, which were slowing her down. That made this easier. "Good. For now, I suggest we find a place where we're not going to sink in, and get that gown tied properly. You're going to either keep trying to adjust it when it falls down the way it is, or it's going to trip you up. I can do the tying pretty quick, I've needed to knot long clothing before. It'll look a little silly, but it'll get you to Torensten and to a proper change. Get you something to pack that gown into as well, once it's cleaned up. Can't hurt to keep it around in case you end up on a formal adventure."
He sighed at the thought. "They happen more often than you might think."

Garnet looked across at Caius as they walked. He stated he had seen a god rampage through a city? Well, perhaps most people would find that hard to believe, but Garnet had seen Lindblum destroyed by Atmos and Alexandria wrecked by Bahamut. They were as close to gods as anything else. She thought about telling him, but she hesitated. He might ask her to explain, and that would mean reliving those memories. Worse yet, it would mean explaining how a power that should have been her, that belonged to her and was her responsibility, had been stolen from her and had killed hundreds, if not thousands of people. Garnet had pushed past the trauma, but she would never forget the sense of loss and horror. She would never forget what her mistakes had cost the people of Alexandria, Lindblum, and Cleyra.
He seemed to be sceptical about her chosen name, and Garnet folded her arms, perhaps a little defensively. "What's wrong with Dagger? I like Dagger," she said. She seemed to consider telling him a little more, especially since he asked of its origins. "Yes, like the blade. Somebody close to me used them as weapons and I needed an alias. Besides, I don't think they're that small. It's not as if I named myself 'Table Knife', is it?" she asked with an amused smile. There were much smaller blades to be named after than a dagger! "And I do not think calling myself 'Broadsword' would have achieved the incognito state that I hoped for," she added, still teasing him, obviously.
"Okay," Garnet nodded to his suggestion. She had no protests against making her gown more practical. She had been on plenty of adventures, and there were always more gowns. "If what you say is true and returning home is unlikely, it may be more sensible to sell this gown once I have found replacement clothes. I'd imagine it carries some value," she pointed out. She didn't often handle the finances on her last adventure (and when she had the... Treno... incident had occurred), but even Garnet knew that she was going to need money to survive. To pay for a place to stay, to find equipment, she'd need at least a staff, and to pay for food. Hm. Food would be a problem. She might even have to learn to cook.
Two years adventuring and she had no idea how to cook.
She stopped, finding some solid ground, and held out her arms. "Please, work your magic," she said, gesturing to the gown. "Dare I ask how often this must happen to you?" she inquired, because it seemed he had experience with assisting people with their impractical dresses.

The Dragonglaive
"It's too obvious as a fake name for someone trying to blend in. Someone named Dagger with long black hair in the vicinity will be quite literally the first person I look to when searching for a Queen on the run with long black hair" Caius pointed out when Garnet questioned his finding humor in her name. It was a funny name, but he didn't care that much about the subject if she liked it. Now its practicality as a fake name was another matter. "But if you like it, I won't stop you. Though I don't know if you'll need a fake name out here. Even if you were a Queen, the name and title no longer carry weight out here. If you prefer the name, then that's perfect for you since I doubt anybody, pending a handful of stragglers from your world that might also show up, will be lining up to make you change it back" he brought up with a shrug. If she thought she might still be in danger and still needed the name, fair enough. But the amount of people that showed up per world, by what he could tell, was typically quite small. No more than about six to ten people at a time, at the very most. Perhaps there were exceptions -- Caius hadn't been all around the world after all. But this is what he knew about Zephon so far.
Though he smirked lightly in amusement at her trying to defend it being used instead of other swords. Caius summoned one of his daggers with a flash of light. "Looks tiny to me" he teased as he spun the dagger between his fingers. Garnet would suggest perhaps she should sell the gown. Caius had thought of it, but he shook his head. "Keep it unless you're absolutely desperate. You'll regret not keeping it when you get homesick" he recommended. "There's game to hunt, and if you're a capable combatant or magic user, then you'll find work in Torensten fairly easily. It might not be permanent work, but it'll keep you fed and a roof over your head if you do the bulletin board jobs consistently" he brought up. "There's always people who need something in Torensten."
He shrugged as he summoned a bit of rope, cutting parts of it with the dagger once Garnet had sat down. "And this gown looks expensive. You won't easily come into one like it" he continued as he began to wrap the rope around her waist, lifting undersides of the gown and tying them into little knots to keep them in place to rest against the rope without going too far down. Sure, he could have just tied a few knots in each part, but it would risk their integrity. Not to mention risk popping out and being a problem again within a few paces. This would last them long enough for "Dagger" to get herself into something more comfortable. At her question, he chuckled slightly. "The majority of my co-workers are women" he answered bluntly, but with a slight bit of cheek. If he didn't know how to work with impractical hair or clothing pieces when the situation no longer becomes practical for them, it'd have been foolish on his part. And they'd both probably have died earlier if he'd been foolish. Caius moved his head a bit to reveal his own long hair had been tied into a clean braid for venturing into the bog. "Not that I'm complaining, they're good teachers."
He finished up, and took a step back to admire his handiwork. "That should do you for now. It's tied up nicely, and won't do any damage to it."

Garnet put her hands on her hips and huffed in his general direction as he criticised her fake name choice. Okay, so she supposed he had a point, but surely by that logic anybody with her hair would stand out and they'd look for her. Besides, she met many people with unusual names. She didn't really see how being named after a dagger was any more unusual than being named after a garnet. "Well, it served me well when I was a princess and on the run," she said to him, smiling a little with pride at how he had been proven wrong. She supposed it hadn't really helped avoid her being found by the Black Waltzes, but it had done for a fake name when she had to offer one.
He raised the good point that nobody cared who she was in this world. That much was true, but that wasn't why she liked the name, after all. "Oh, I know," she nodded. "But... Dagger is more than an alias. Sometimes, I think that I am more Dagger than I ever was Garnet. Besides, I may not be known here, but I still suspect introducing myself as Garnet Til Alexandros XVII will draw more attention than introducing myself as Dagger," she pointed out. Garnet was no psychologist and didn't want to analyse why Dagger as a name meant so much to her. Maybe it was because it was what Zidane called her, or maybe it was because it was her chosen identity, instead of one forced upon her, or maybe it was because technically both the name Garnet and the name Dagger were fake, and she was neither of those people. She didn't know. She just knew if she had to play adventurer, she would prefer to do so under the name Dagger.
"I know how I must look to you, Caius, but I assure you, I am more than a pretty gown and a tiara. I do not need this dress to remember my home," instead, her hands went to the Falcon Claw's pendant around her neck. That she wouldn't part with. "My good memories of home are not tied to dresses. They are... tied to something very different," she explained. She wondered if Caius had parted with something he regretted and that was why he said so. "I'm no hunter, and not much of a combatant, but I am capable with white magic. I'm sure I can find those that need my help," she said, but she still thought selling the dress was a better starting point. Garnet didn't exactly have much experience with seeking employment, after all. It would take time, and she would need money immediately.
"All the more reason to sell it," she said when he pointed out how valuable it looked.
"Oh? And do they often venture into swamps in a Queen's attire?" she asked, smirking a little when he commented that his co-workers were alsowomen. "I mean, I hardly consider myself a bastion of practicality, but I know when I set out on my own adventure I at least wore a sensible garment." Okay, maybe bright orange hadn't been a good choice for remaining undetected. But the point remained that she had tried.
She looked back at the tied up gown, and nodded her approval. "Very impressive. This definitely makes life easier," she admitted. She was sure Steiner would have a heart attack if he could see it, but, well, imagining his reaction just amused her slightly more.

The Dragonglaive
Sure, black hair would be something to look out for. But many people had black hair. Not many people with black hair had obviously fake names. So the name "Dagger" narrowed it down drastically. The name was silly to begin with, but it wasn't why he was criticizing it. Caius looked at practical value for these sorts of things, it was... Just how he did things. If it served her well, good enough, and he shrugged his shoulders at that. He doubted that she actually fooled anyone, and if she had, he doubted the intelligence of those fooled, but he wasn't going to stand there and argue with her. That too, was impractical. The name held clear sentiment with her, so he supposed that was good enough.
She insisted that she would be fine, and didn't need the sentimental item. Ironic, since she wanted to keep a name that held sentiment. "If you're sure" he responded with a shrug. "I don't doubt your capabilities. The closest thing my homeland of Lucis had to a Princess was the Oracle, who was the most powerful healer in the land. But I've been here a few years. I didn't bring much with me. I don't wear my military garb anymore, but it's practical as a spare if I need it, and sometimes here and there, no matter how much I get used to this world, I get homesick. It's kind of nice to look at it here and there, makes me feel a little better. That dress has practical use. If you have something else that fits the homesickness cure thing, fair enough" he brought up. "But you never know. Things happen. I never thought I'd have to buy a suit for a Masquerade but I did. The things are expensive. I sure wish I'd come to this world with one on hand" he remarked with a small chuckle. "So that's why I say keep it if you can, sell if you're desperate. It could come in handy. But if you really don't find anything right away, which I doubt if you're skilled with healing magic, and you gotta eat, gotta sleep with a roof over your head, then do what you have to do."
Back to what was practical. She was thinking practically this time, which he could respect. And he understood her mindset. All he could do was offer her potential options, give her some food for thought to plot her course with. This was not an easy journey to plan ahead for. But Caius was doing the best he could to help her with what knowledge he had from his own journey.
"Different strokes for different folks" he brought up when she commented on the practicality of attire. "I've learned not to question it. Everyone's got their reasons for wearing what they do. Even my attire isn't convenient in every environment. But I don't always have the chance to go home and change out."
She was satisfied with his handiwork, so that would do. It didn't look the most pretty, but it would serve their needs. Once they were back on track, he did have something to bring up.
"It'll likely be night before we can reach town. I assume you've made camp before? By the time we get out of this bog, it'll be too dark to go much further safely."
